Why The Prophet ﷺ Told Hosts To Do LESS | Khutbah by Sh. Mohammad Elshinawy

Hosting guests at home has become rare. Most of us have friends we’ve known for years and never had over. We meet at cafés and restaurants, keep up in the group chat, and save our homes for some day when the house is clean and there’s time to cook. That day rarely comes.

Sh. Mohammad Elshinawy argues in this khutbah that the feast is part of the problem. When hosting means a week of cooking and a table nobody can finish, the guest feels the weight of it, the host dreads doing it again, and the invitations stop.

The Prophet ﷺ told his Companions not to go to great lengths for guests, and they served what they had.

Your friends came for you. A cup of tea on the floor and one extra dish is enough to keep the door open, and an open door is how friendship, and the faith that grows inside it, reaches your children.

00:00Brothers and sisters, just as the rays of sunlight can never be counted, because they're not actually rays, it's an unending stream,
00:10we should never expect that the rays of light that perpetually shine and emanate from the words of Allah can ever be counted.
00:22And you know, always and forever people will continue to further realize just how perfectly positioned every verse, rather every word in the speech of Allah is.
00:36In fact, you should expect this because there are so many people out there that you and I find so inspirational, find so charismatic, find so well-spoken.
00:45So what should we expect of the one who created their intelligence, created their tongues, but being infinitely superior in his eloquence, in his articulation, subhanahu wa ta'ala.
01:00I was reminded about this by a brother who told me recently, "I used to always wonder why the Qur'an, if Allah knows the future,
01:10doesn't it ever address head-on the issue of atheism, of not believing in God." He said, "Then I grew up, I learned better and I zoomed out and my horizons opened
01:21and I realized, subhanallah, it is perfect wisdom to leave it out because there actually is no such thing as an atheist. Deep down inside, they all believe it, no matter how hard they try to smother that innate, inborn, hardwired belief."
01:35He said, "And I realized historically also, now we are sort of at a turning point, at a decline of atheism, a resurgence of religion in whatever forms, but when you zoom out now, there's actually never been a society
01:48that has ever entertained atheism for long. So it makes perfect sense the Qur'an is dismissive of it." "I was just short-sighted," he said. And it reminded me of a passage in the Qur'an
02:02that I used to always wonder why is it there? And that's Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala's statement, "wa laysa al-dhakaru ka-l-untha." "And the male is not like the female." I remember vividly as a teenager hearing that in prayer and saying, "Does that even need to be said?
02:16Like, isn't that common sense? Why would God need to say that?" And then I grew and I learned and I said, subhanallah, a time would come when people forget God and so naturally they even also forget what it means to be human,
02:30what it means to be male and female, no longer appreciating the unique differences and the interplay between them. Allah had to spell it out for them. He knew, subhanahu wa ta'ala. And there is a third example that I want to rest my khutbah on today,
02:45which is, I have wondered, why is it that Allah makes mention of the guests of Ibrahim alayhi assalam and how he hosted them in his personal home, in his private home? Why that's even mentioned in the Qur'an?
03:00Why is it worth being mentioned? It doesn't seem like a major event. They were on their way to a major event, which is destroying the people of Lut, right, alayhi assalam, for rejecting God and rebelling against his morality
03:13but sort of stopping over for food, seemingly, at Ibrahim alayhi assalam's house. And so I went and I checked the tafsir books, the books of Qur'anic commentary, and it said Allah is celebrating Ibrahim alayhi assalam
03:27because he was the first person ever in human history to introduce upon people, hosting people in your own home. And that actually made me more confused. I was like, "What does that even mean?
03:40Like, it's not a genius idea to have someone in your house. How could nobody have ever thought of it before Ibrahim alayhi assalam? It's like common sense. You bring someone into your home if you like them and you keep them out of your home if you don't like them. But not having anyone, even if you like them in your home,
03:56was that ever a thing, subhanallah?" And then subhanallah, you grow and you learn and you find yourself in 2024 and society has basically indirectly conditioned us upon hardly ever doing it ourselves.
04:11That's why the ayah is there, isn't it? Think about it. Think about our relationships today. We like to have surface-level relationships from a safe distance, from beyond the screen.
04:24Or at best, we're gonna meet in a public setting, a safe space where I can show up when I want and leave when I want with no strings attached. I'm not gonna actually bring you into my home. To bring you into my home, we all understand this.
04:39We all think this. It's in the ether, we inhaled it. Even if we didn't intellectually commit to it, it's like, "Why would I do that? It's inconvenient. It's intrusive." And then the Qur'an comes in with this story of Ibrahim alayhi assalam,
04:51the seemingly passing story in significant detail at first glance for some people and tells you, "Hold on just one second. That is no harmless cultural shift. That's actually a big deal." That's what the Qur'an does. That's what the word of Allah provides you with.
05:06Those safeguards so you don't swerve left and right. And, you know, the very mild, it is those same mild inconveniences that happen with visitation, that ingrain in people love for each other,
05:20that you sort of inconvenience yourself a bit for me. It is what breeds that sense of fraternity, that belonging, that allows faith to be possible. 'Cause like, you know, we do things together. We're social creatures.
05:34This is why Allah made it an act of worship in Islam. You know, the hadith where Allah, the Mighty and Majestic says, "Wajabat mahabbati, my love is guaranteed for
05:45al-mutahabibina fiyya wa-al-mutajalisina fiyya— those who love each other for my sake and sit with each other for my sake." It didn't stop there. In case you think "sit with each other" means only park benches and masajid.
05:57Then it said, "wa-al-mutazawirauna fiyya wa-al-mutabathiluна fiyya— and those who visit each other for my sake and those who visit each other for my sake and spend on each other for my sake."
06:10In another hadith, the Prophet ﷺ even said, "Idha aada al-Muslemu akhaahu awzaarahu— when a Muslim visits his brother, whether he's sick or not, meaning visitation is not just about the ill,
06:24whether sick or not, Allah calls out to him, 'Tibta wa taba mamshaaka wa tabawwata fil-jannati manzila— you are in such a good place right now and blessed are your steps, your steps
06:39and you have just booked the reservation in paradise by going to visit your brother.'" And in a third hadith—and there are so many, but just one more in Sahih Muslim— he told us ﷺ one time a man actually traveled
06:53to go see his brother. And so Allah had an angel in the form of a man waiting on his path, intercepting him and saying to him, "Where are you off to?" He said, "To see so-and-so in this town over here." He said, "Is there any business between you?"
07:06And of course it's fine to travel for business, halal business, right? He said, "No, it's just that I love him for the sake of Allah." He said, "Fa inni rasulullahi ilayka anna Allaha yuhibbuka kama ahbabta—
07:21God sent me to carry a message to you that he has loved you for loving your brother, for going out of your way." to maintain that bond with your brother through visitation. You know, actually in the time of the Prophet ﷺ
07:33there was a man that came to visit him ﷺ and he sent a message to all of his houses and they said to him, we have nothing to offer except water. Can you imagine? All of the Prophet's homes had nothing in them on that night but water.
07:49And so he said, who will take in the guest of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ? And so a man from the Ansar from Medina said, I'll do it, ya Rasulullah. And he sent the message home to his family. She said, we have no food, just enough for the kids and they're crying.
08:04He said, soothe them and put them to sleep. That means they were just whining. It doesn't mean they were hungry because if they were hungry, he should not hold back. The individual obligation would take precedence over the communal obligation, right?
08:16So soothe them, like distract them till the morning. This is for the Messenger of Allah's guest. And they bring him into the house. This is Sahih al-Bukhari. And his wife, such a wise woman,
08:28she pretended to be fixing something in the lamp, like adding oil, and she turned it off. So the visibility was low and they started pretending like they were eating so he wouldn't be uncomfortable because he was actually the only one eating.
08:43There wasn't enough food for everybody. The next morning, the Prophet ﷺ said to the man, dahika Allahu laylata min fi alaikuma. Allah smiled upon the actions of you two last night.
08:59Thumma anzala Allah. And then Allah sent down the verse at this incident, wa yu'thirun ala anfusihim wa law kana bihim khasasah. Great believers are those who gave precedence to others over themselves,
09:12even if they would have had some sort of need for it. You know, this is the mark of the believer. It is the mark of faith. You know, sometimes you'll start thinking about finances.
09:24Maybe this is why the Prophet ﷺ said, man kana yu'minu billahi wa al-yawm al-akhir fa lyukrim daifahu. Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day must honor their guests. Do you believe or not that you're not spending on him? You have to believe that. That he has his own rizq.
09:39If you invite him, that means it's coming through you to him that day, but it's still his. Different path, right? You're not sharing your rizq with anybody. And this is why Shafiq al-Balkhi, rahimahullah, has a beautiful statement.
09:52He says, laysa shay'un ahabba ilayya min al-dhaif. There's nothing on earth I like more than hosting guests. He said, li anna rizqahu ala Allah wa ajruh ilayya. Because his rizq is on God.
10:06It's just being served through me and the reward comes to me anyway. That's a good deal. You know, some people don't know why they've stopped visiting each other. Yes, it's culture and stuff.
10:18But part of the way it happened, let's dig a little deeper. It's because a culture arose where we burden ourselves for our guests. And this is part of the balancing act Islam provided you with.
10:31Islam actually didn't just say visit each other. It said, and if you burden yourself with visitation, visitation is going to stop. Islam actually said that. So many places. Muhammad ibn Sirin, who was of the Tabi'een.
10:45He met so many of the Companions. He said, kanu yaqulun. They used to say, meaning the Prophet's Companions. They, for him is the Prophet's Companions. His generation too. They used to say, he said,
11:01la tukrim sadiqaka bima yashuqqu alayhi. Don't honor your friend in a way that would burden him. You know what that means? Like make him feel awkward that you really went out of your way. You really overdid it.
11:15I don't want to put my brother through that again. I'm never accepting his invitation again. All right. You think you're being generous, but this is an overplay. This is sort of excessive and it backfires. So Islam says be conscious of it.
11:29You know, the notion that simplicity is something we fail to recognize a lot of times. Simplicity and generosity can exist at the same time. You can keep it simple and still be generous.
11:42In fact, the fact that all you have at home is water right now. That means you've shared what's yours. You didn't go out of your way to get them something new, right? This is why the Arabs used to say,
11:57jud, generosity is in what's available. You're giving from what's available. Even if it's just water. Not my suggestion, by the way. The Prophet, sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, said to Abu Dharr,
12:11Ya Abu Dharr, and Abu Dharr, subhanallah, was poor. So he's telling me, even you keep it up. Even you have enough to honor guests or to connect with your neighbors. He said, Ya Abu Dharr,
12:21idha tabakhta maraqah, fa kathir ma'aha wa ta'aha jiranak. Oh Abu Dharr, when you cook some broth, you know, some soup, increase the water. Yes, it's going to be a little less creamy. It's going to be a little bit diluted.
12:35He said, but increase the water and take it as an opportunity to connect. Keep connecting with your neighbors, he said to him. You know, I know it's going through your mind. What's my wife going to say? And even if my wife and I are on the same page,
12:49what's the guest going to say? You're stingy or otherwise. I know it seems embarrassing at first glance. I know there are cultural expectations. So hear this out.
13:02Salman al-Farisi, radi Allahu anhu, the companion of the Prophet, sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, was visited by a guest and he brought out to the guest what he had. If you have more, give more. But he brought out what he had, which was bread and salt.
13:19And he preempted. He knew it's awkward. So he said to the man,
13:35were it not for the fact that the Messenger of Allah, sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, forbade anyone from going out of their way for anyone, I would have gone out of my way for you. But I'm talking about awkward. Violating the Prophet, sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, is the ultimate awkward.
13:49But even in the dunya, before you meet the Prophet, sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, you miss out on the wisdom. The Salaf, the early Muslims, they saw the wisdom. The wisdom of it: if you complicate visitations, this weakens bonds, communal bonds.
14:02Because we're just going to do it way less. You know, one of my teachers is an imam in Houston, Texas. He's a respected scholar all over the world. He says a woman, a family once invited him over to the house. And he said, I showed up.
14:17I cannot describe to you the assortment that was served to us. A few different kinds of meat, a few different kinds of chicken, a few different kinds of seafood, the appetizers and the desserts. And you had to pick what you weren't going to eat, basically. There was no way you could sample everything.
14:32So I said to the hostess, I said to her, like, you really went out of your way here. You really shouldn't have burdened yourself. This must have taken days. She said, Wallahi Shaykh, for you, I've been preparing for a week
14:45because Shaykh so-and-so is coming to my house. He said, she hasn't invited me back in three years. Right? And even if she were, you're going to sort of say, do I really want to put the family through that?
14:58Right? Sort of like, you know, we're under construction. Nothing's happening because a guest is coming. In the long run, the big picture, this is actually detrimental. And that is why the deen cautions us against that. It comes from the right place, but it breaks ties.
15:13This extravagance started in the early generations of Islam. Al-Fudayl al-Mu'ayyad, it's recorded about him that he used to lament this. He used to grieve over this. He would say, Innama taqata'a an-nas bit-taklif.
15:26People have started to break ties with each other because of their extravagance, their excessiveness with each other. He said, yazooru ar-rajulu akhaahu. A man visits a man, fayatakallaf lahu.
15:40And he really, you know, goes out of his way for him. And so he refuses to go back.
16:05Brothers and sisters, I want to now bring it all back to what I started the khutbah saying, Qur'anic brilliance. Everything I just described to you in a hadith and statements of the Salaf, the righteous predecessors,
16:20all exists in two lines in the Qur'an. Look at the packaging. Allah says, Hal ataka hadith duyuf Ibrahim al-mukrameen. Haven't you heard about the guests of Abraham and how they were honored? Idh dakhalu alayhi.
16:33When they walked in on him. They didn't say they visited him because visited could mean they came to the door, knocked, may get in, may not. They understood that they were welcome almost any time, right? Faqalu salaman, qala salam. They greeted each other. He matched their energy.
16:47That's part of it, right? Then Allah says, Faragh ila ahlihi. And he slipped away to his family. You see, he slipped away. Slipped away. He didn't say, all right, I'm going to go get the food now. You sure you guys want to eat
17:02or you want to sleep light as they say? He slipped away, the idea, to not make them feel like they're putting him through a lot. Faja bi'ijl hasanin. He came with a calf, a meaty calf.
17:17Once again, you can have a lot. Just don't throw it out. And so long as that's what's available, you know, just keep it casual. That's how you keep it friendly. Whatever your norm is, when a guest comes, add one or two dishes. That's it.
17:31So that this can continue on or else the cost is generations. Look, he brought them this food. Allah then says, Faqqarrabahu ilayhim. And he brought it to them. No servant or butler.
17:44He served them the food. He brought it close to them. He didn't have someone bring it to them nor did he tell them, come to the dinette, if you will. Nothing wrong with the dinette. But that's the idea. He's serving with his hands. I have this vivid memory, brothers and sisters, of my father. Rahimahu Allah.
17:59May Allah give him Jannah and forgive his sins. After every guest dinner, the fruits would be brought out and one by one, he would cut the fruits and hand them to the guests. Every apple would get split across four people
18:13and then the circle would repeat and repeat, eating from someone's hand. It's different. If you don't bring people in, how will your kids see that from you? And that's how community, that's how hospitality gets trumped, gets interrupted
18:27in the name of generosity. Hospitality gets killed by supposed generosity. And so he brings it to them, Allah said, And he says to them, won't you eat?
18:41He didn't tell them eat. He said, won't you eat? Keep it casual. Keep it light. Don't force anyone to eat. And if you go overboard, you're gonna feel like you need to force them. This is how you bring the Qur'anic brilliance into your life.
18:56Even at a moment when the world doesn't get it. They don't understand it.
