How much financial pain are you feeling?

Lost jobs, shrinking savings, and the shame of not being able to provide. If you aren’t going through it, someone close to you almost certainly is. Allah has promised every soul its rizq (sustenance). So why does tawakkul (relying on Him) feel so hard when the struggles deepen?

Dr. Omar Suleiman tells a little-known story from the time of the Prophet ﷺ. A man came to him asking for help. The Prophet ﷺ didn’t just hand him charity, but set him on a 15-day action plan to improve his situation. What the man came back with by the end, and the question the Prophet ﷺ asked him, changes how we should think about rizq, dignity, and what we owe each other as an ummah.

And stay for the story of the shaykh who quietly disappeared from his community and turned up somewhere no one expected…

00:01Dear brothers and sisters, I'm speaking very anecdotally now. I can remember a time where every morning there would be a message or two about some community issue,
00:15someone that's going through a difficult time when it comes to their relationship, a fitna that has arisen between two people or two parties in a masjid. You have to solve this, you have to solve that.
00:26Basically every imam that you know, I guarantee you, gets at least 15-20 messages every single morning. Emergency, I need you to call me right now, I need 5 minutes, I need 10 minutes, this is important.
00:38Every single imam, no matter what masjid they're in, they get those types of messages. But never in my life could I recall so many messages on a regular basis of, Shaykh, make du'a for me, I lost my job.
00:49I need help, do you know anyone that could place me in a position? Do you know any organization that could hire me? Are you able to recommend me to this person or that person?
01:01Never in my own life have I seen so much financial pain and uncertainty in our community. Now I'm not talking about statistics, I'm not going to quote Department of Labor here, or unemployment, or what represents a healthy economy,
01:14or the uncertainty about AI specifically taking jobs, and what's going to happen in tech, and what's going to happen in that industry. There is no doubt that there are different types of industries, and there are different types of circumstances.
01:26But I want to start off with a very basic premise. Every single person in here is supposed to be feeling financial pain. Supposed to be feeling financial pain. Why?
01:38Because every single person in here is either feeling it directly themselves, or knows someone who is going through it right now. I would make that, I don't want to say bet, but you get the point.
01:49I am fairly certain that every single person knows someone, a family member, if they themselves are not directly in some sort of financial pain right now, knows someone that's in financial pain, has a friend that's in financial pain,
02:02or is aware of that. Right? And SubhanAllah, it strikes across the board, and you can start to see now the various talks about rizq and sustenance. And yes, there's a component of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala
02:15has given every single person their rizq guaranteed. وَفِى السَّمَاءِ رِزْقُكُمْ وَمَا تُوعَدُونَ In the heavens is your sustenance and what you've been promised. فَوَرَبِّ السَّمَاءِ وَالْأَرْضِ إِنَّهُ لَحَقٌّ مِثْلَ مَا أَنَّكُمْ تَنطِقُونَ
02:29By the Lord of the heavens and the earth, it is true, all of it, certain, in the same way that you speak, your rizq will follow you with the same certainty that you speak with. Do you have any doubt right now, when you speak, that you are speaking?
02:42But there's a process for that speech to reach your mouth. Allah azza wa jall is saying, it is all promised for you, it's all there. The Prophet ﷺ taught us that your rizq will find you. It will find you, it will pursue you.
02:54You will not die, your lifespan will not end until every single penny that has been decreed for you will find you. But, one of the ways that this discussion often falls short
03:07is that it entirely places the onus on the individual to figure it out. And it becomes a discussion entirely about how you tie your own camel and how you put your trust in Allah ﷻ.
03:17And it doesn't speak to what our community ethics are supposed to be. That just like the Prophet ﷺ when he mentioned that the ummah is like one body when one part of it feels pain,
03:29the entire body complains of fever and distress. That is something that we feel in our most immediate local communities, of difficulty and distress. And so everyone should be feeling that pain.
03:43And everyone has a role to play when that pain hits and when that pain sets in. And I actually want to start with a long narration. It's in Sunan Ibn Majah by Anas ibn Malik r.a.
03:56And it has some corresponding reports in Sunan Abi Dawud, Ibn Hibban, Tirmidhi and others. This is the longest report from Anas ibn Malik r.a. Which gives some of the background and context, of a story of what happens in the time of the Prophet ﷺ.
04:10And it's different from the Abd al-Rahman ibn Auf r.a. story. Why do I say it's different from the Abd al-Rahman ibn Auf r.a. story? I'm someone that teaches about the companions of the Prophet ﷺ. And sometimes when you tell the Abd al-Rahman ibn Auf story
04:22that he could turn a stone and he would find gold under it. And, دُلَّنِي عَلَى السُّوقِ Just take me to the marketplace and everything he touched became gold. That feels very inaccessible. Feels very far away from me. I've run into dead end after dead end after dead end.
04:36I don't have that same story. The principle is still the same of taqwa, of piety and provision. But it feels inaccessible. So I'm going to give you a very long narration.
04:46And I want you to give it a modern day visual in your head. Okay? I want you to imagine this happens in our masjid right now. And give it a modern day visual. Anas ibn Malik r.a. says that
04:59an Ansari man comes to the Prophet ﷺ and he mentions to the Prophet ﷺ that he's in need. He asks the Prophet ﷺ for help. Our messenger ﷺ
05:11is the furthest from stinginess, is a mercy to the world, always, always rises to the occasion. And so his response will be based in what is best for the person that he is helping.
05:26But the Prophet ﷺ did not just give him sadaqah. He didn't just give him charity. He said to him, Do you have anything at your house right now? Amma fi baytika shay'? Do you have anything in your house right now?
05:38He said, Ya Rasulullah, I have a little blanket and I've got a wooden bowl that we use for our water and for something to drink from. And that's it. The Prophet ﷺ said, Bring them to me.
05:51So he goes home and he brings them. The Prophet ﷺ says, This is it? He says, This is it. The Prophet ﷺ gathers the companions. And he says, مَنْ يَشْتَرِي هَذَا؟ Who's going to purchase these two things? Who's going to purchase these two things?
06:05One person says, Ya Rasulullah, I'll give a dirham for it. The Prophet ﷺ says, Who's going to increase over the dirham? Suddenly the Prophet ﷺ is in auctioneer mode. Who's going to give more than the dirham? And even if the things that he's holding
06:19do not have more value than a dirham, it's the Prophet ﷺ asking. If the Prophet ﷺ asked them without showing them anything, they would rise to the occasion. But there are lessons that are being taught here. مَنْ يَزِيدُ عَلَى دِرْهَمٍ
06:32Who's going to give more than a dirham? So someone said, Two dirhams. The Prophet ﷺ said, Okay, good. He gave him those two items. He took the two dirhams. Turns back to the Ansari man. He says, Here are your two dirhams.
06:45He said, Take one dirham and buy some food for your family. He said, With the other dirham I want you to go and purchase a blade that can be used for an axe. This is a very interesting narration.
06:59Okay. Went home. Bought some food for his family. Came back and he used the other dirham to purchase what is for an axe. So the Prophet ﷺ took the axe.
07:12فَشَدَّ فِيهِ عُودًا بِيَدِهِ The Prophet ﷺ took a handle and he attached it himself ﷺ and fixed it up and put it in the right situation. I mean with his own hands ﷺ. He's got the piece of wood ready.
07:26He takes care of it. Who is this man? Is he some significant companion? Everyone is significant in the sight of Rasulullah ﷺ. And then he hands him back this axe now that's been brandished. And we are just starting our portion in the first
07:39about the touch of the Prophet ﷺ. Allah knows in that touch and in his fixing the axe what barakah is in there. The Prophet ﷺ says, take this axe now. He says, and I want you to go and collect some firewood. He said,
07:53وَلَا أَرَاكَ خَمْسَةَ عَشَرَ يَوْمًا And I don't want you to come back for 15 days. I mean for 15 days don't come back. Go and gather firewood with this axe. Okay.
08:07He goes and gathers firewood and comes back to the Prophet ﷺ 15 days later. Exactly when the Prophet ﷺ told him to come. After the economic plan that he set for him ﷺ. The Prophet ﷺ said,
08:21what's the story? He said, I've got 10 dirhams now. The Prophet ﷺ said, good. Now take those 10 dirhams and go and take care of your family. You can now purchase food. You now have access
08:33to what would have been if the Prophet ﷺ had given him those 2 dirhams in the first place. And the Messenger of Allah ﷺ tells him, isn't this better for you than the blemish of begging on the Day of Judgment? And he ﷺ says that al-mas'ala,
08:47that begging is only befitting for someone who is in severe poverty, or who has an extreme debt, or someone who has a heavy blood money on their shoulders. But other than that, this is better for you
08:59than if you had come and just taken some charity. This narration is a master class in what a community looks like when it comes to people who are in hardship,
09:12people who are in difficult circumstances, and in difficult situations. Are you the Prophet ﷺ in the moment that you're being asked? Are you the person that immediately resorted to asking? Are you the person that was in the crowd that said, yeah I'll give a dirham,
09:26I'll give 2 dirhams, even though it's not worth the 2 dirhams technically. Who are you in the story that we mentioned from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ? Who are you in this community story
09:39with a very real circumstance that matches what we typically will find in terms of financial difficulty and uncertainty? Where do you play that role? And here's where I want us to walk back, inshaAllah ta'ala,
09:53back to this concept of rizq. Let's start with the man himself. We know the very famous narration, tie your camel and put your trust in Allah ﷻ. Right, tie your camel and put your trust in Allah ﷻ. But it's one thing to tie your camel,
10:07it's another thing to go get an axe. Now, this man has seemingly no experience in cutting firewood. That wasn't the job route that he had planned out for himself
10:21early on in life. And sometimes Allah ﷻ, when He writes our rizq for us, He writes our sustenance for us, He writes it, من حيث لا يحتسب from places that they don't expect. That doesn't necessarily mean that it's going to come to you
10:35through a person or through a place that you didn't expect. Sometimes that means that you're going to find it in an avenue that you never would have anticipated before. You studied this in school, you got this degree,
10:49and you set your entire career trajectory on this particular way. And then someone tells you to go pick up an axe? Wait a minute, that's not what I had in mind. That's not what I envisioned. See, one of the things
11:03that the ulama mention here of the expanse of the chest that tawakkul brings, that trust in Allah brings, is that sometimes there's the demoralizing effect when you face an obstacle where you don't know what to do next. You can't think straight anymore.
11:15Like you can't even think outside of what just happened to you or what you're going through, right? It's like there's a panic that goes in there, there's a devastation, there's a why me, this is beneath me, I can't do this, I can't do that.
11:27There's a creativity that's actually stifled by the devastation of the situation. And the believer has such tawakkul in Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala, such trust in Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala,
11:37that Allah will provide for them, that they're quickly able to pivot and to adjust and to start thinking and looking this way and looking that way because they know that the rizq is somewhere. It's somewhere that Allah azawajal put it.
11:50And that adaptability is a strength, they tell you, in the modern world. And sometimes for a believer to think about, what's the next avenue of halal rizq that maybe I wasn't paying attention to? What's something I can look to here or something I can look to there?
12:04And then to be pleased with that and to say alhamdulillah for whatever Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala puts in your way is something that's beautiful and blessed. You know, I won't even share the name of the country.
12:16But I remember very specifically a conversation about five years ago, a brother who was telling me about a shaykh in his community
12:27that lost his job and that did not appear in public for some time. And unfortunately, people were not asking about that person.
12:36And subhanAllah, he said that I ordered an Uber and then the shaykh came to pick me up.
12:43And I was so embarrassed about how we didn't ask, not that there's anything wrong with this or not that this is a lowly thing at all, no. But it's just like that was the shaykh and like he disappeared and like we're not asking.
12:58You know, I remember, the shaykh, before he could say anything, turns around, smiles, and says alhamdulillah, Allah gave me halal rizq. I'm happy.
13:09Now, there are all sorts of things to unpack there that we don't have time to do in the khutbah.
13:16But I just want to first and foremost focus on the specific lesson that the ulama mention of the person who adapts, the person who looks, the person who's satisfied. When Allah azawajal puts something in their way, that's that person, right?
13:30So sometimes your rizq is in a place that you totally did not anticipate, a job trajectory, something that's out there and Allah azawajal is putting it in your way. And Allah is facilitating you towards that direction.
13:43Then you go back to the community, right? The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, he praised the tribe of Abu Musa al-Ash'ari radiyallahu ta'ala anhu, al-Ash'ariyyin.
13:54He said, sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, in praising them, that when they go out on expeditions, when they run short, they take everything that they have and they put it in a single blanket and then they distribute it amongst their families. He said, I am from them and they are from me. He's praising their way, sallallahu alayhi wa sallam.
14:08And you'll find the ulama of hadith when they talk about that. They say that this concept of muwasaa, of having community solidarity funds, having ways to launch people, having ways to help people out. Not necessarily just sadaqah.
14:22Our deen has such a greater imagination, with civilizational structures that arose with brilliance over the last 1400 years beyond just sadaqah.
14:34The idea of qard hasana, the idea of lending someone money as a good loan, as a way of helping them. Qard hasana was not something that you make money off of. Loans in our modern conception are things you make money off of.
14:47Qard hasana was something you help someone with. Yeah, there is a chance that it might not be recuperated. Yes, the person might even be late in paying me back. I might gain the shade of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala's throne on the Day of Judgment, as the Prophet sallAllahu alayhi wa sallam said,
15:01because of my leniency in the paying back. Now the person who took the money better try to pay it back, because that's on their neck. But the person who gave the money is looking to Allah azawajal for his shade on the Day of Judgment
15:15and may have already even made the calculation that I might not get this full money back. But still, that's part of our deen, that's part of what we have, that Allah azawajal makes you a source of rizq for that person.
15:26What about the idea of shafa'ah, the idea of shafa'ah hasana, good intercession, introducing people to other people, networking, finding jobs for someone, looking for this place you can plug into.
15:39What about the idea of teaching skills and trying as the world changes and shifts to put your community in a place of strength. I mean we have all these WhatsApp groups where people can backbite with 20-30 messages a day,
15:52surely we can come up with more WhatsApp groups of networking and plugging people into networks and finding people jobs in our communities and trying to put people in situations where they can succeed. The point is, dear brothers and sisters, the imagination of our deen stretches way beyond
16:06just the individual pursuit of rizq and the promise that Allah made to that person. It stretches to everybody that's involved, every single person in a community.
16:16It stretches to you when you're in a place of power and you could forgive a debt where you don't put someone else through financial distress, where you don't crush someone even if you have the right to.
16:30It could be in your situation where, and you'll find this in the example of the Prophet ﷺ, coming to the middle of the masjid, Ka'b ibn Malik radiyallahu anhu was arguing with a person in the middle of the masjid over a debt that was owed to him and the Prophet ﷺ comes and he solves the problem,
16:43comes up with a payment schedule for them to mitigate that. Sometimes arguing on behalf of your brother who owes money and saying, give it a little bit more time. Going to the debtor, trying to make things easy.
16:55This is all part of our responsibility to be part of that process of rizq. It's not just tying your own camel. Help someone else tie their camel as well. Help someone else find their way as well. We have something far beyond teach a man to fish.
17:09We've got something brilliant in our deen. And so as the world moves towards more financial uncertainty, you go back to yourself and you say, what can I do to put my whole community in a better situation?
17:22What can I do to put my brother, my sister in a better situation? That too is one of the most blessed ways that you can give back to your community and do good, dear brothers and sisters. And here's the last thing I want to say because this khutbah is relevant to every single person in this room.
17:36I'll tell you how. Beyond just the payment. If you are in a situation where alhamdulillah rabbul ameen, this doesn't apply to you today. وَلَئِن شَكَرْتُمْ لَأَزِيدَنَّكُمْ Be grateful. I will increase you.
17:49And part of that gratitude is getting someone else to the same place of comfort that you're in right now. If you're not the person that's in financial pain, maybe you're the sibling of someone that is.
18:01And you have to think about in your own calculations of how you live your life, how it's affecting your sibling. What you can do for your sibling. What you can do for your friend. If you're the friend of someone that's going through that difficult time right now.
18:13If you're the spouse of someone that's going through that difficult time. سُبْحَانَ اللهِ Because there is a sense of worth that's attached to our earning. And it's deeply humiliating sometimes for a provider
18:26to not be able to provide something that the family wants. To voluntarily relinquish some of those demands and say, Don't worry, alhamdulillah. Our trust is in Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala. We'll search for that which is halal. Don't go looking at haram places.
18:40We will bear through this. We are grateful, alhamdulillah rabbil 'alameen. Because just like gratitude maintains the much, gratitude maintains the little as well. And Allah azawajal grows that as well. So if you're the spouse of a person, to reduce that pressure and to say,
18:54No, don't worry. If you're the child of a person, the worst thing your parents could conceive of is saying no out of a place that I can't provide. They don't want you to know that sometimes. To lessen the demands, lessen the burdens.
19:08Everyone to think with a mindset of, Is this necessary? Because we're not supposed to be a community of extravagance, even if we're a community of abundance, even if we have it all. We're still not a community of israf, of extravagance.
19:21That's not our ethos as Muslims. And the last thing I say to you, dear brothers and sisters, as we turn towards Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala, your situation today is not your situation tomorrow.
19:34And when the Prophet ﷺ says, No one of you believes until he loves for his brother what he loves for himself. It takes you to really, really, really put yourself in someone else's shoes right now. And to think about that other person in the community.
19:48And to ask Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala to use you to be of support to them. Sometimes even a word of solidarity, dear brothers and sisters. But we have to have each other's backs. And we have to take this crisis of the individual jobless and financially struggling
20:02and stop making it an individual discussion. This is who we are as an ummah of the Prophet ﷺ. Situate yourself in that hadith of the Prophet ﷺ. Situate yourself in that situation with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. May Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala provide
20:16each and every single one of us with halal and beneficial rizq. May Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala allow it to be fulfilling and halal rizq. May Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala allow everyone who is unemployed to find halal employment. May Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala allow everyone that is financially struggling
20:29to find halal means for themselves. May Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala allow every single one of us to find a way to support a brother or a sister in some way, shape or form that is in that situation. May Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala bestow upon this community
20:43that which will put us in a position of strength to channel the brilliance of this deen to the world that is around us. May Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala forgive us in regards to our shortcomings with Him and with our brothers and sisters. Allahumma ameen. I say this and ask Allah's forgiveness for myself and for you.
20:57Indeed, He is the Forgiving, the Merciful. So ask forgiveness.
21:11Alhamdulillah. Peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah and upon his family and companions. May Allah forgive the believers, the Muslims, the living and the dead. You are the All-Hearing, the All-Near, the All-Responsive. May Allah forgive us and have mercy on us.
21:25Forgive us and do not punish us. Our Lord, we have wronged ourselves. If You do not forgive us and have mercy on us, we will not be among the losers. Allahumma, You are the Forgiving, the Merciful. You love forgiveness, so forgive us. Allahumma, forgive our parents. May Allah have mercy on them, as He did to our father when he was young. Our Lord, grant us from our wives and children the pleasure of our eyes.
21:39And make us leaders for the righteous. Allahumma, help our brothers and sisters who are weak in the east and the west. Allahumma, help them in Palestine and in Sudan and everywhere. Allahumma, protect us from the enemies of Your religion. Allahumma, show us in the wrongdoers the wonders of Your power. Allahumma, destroy the wrongdoers
21:53with the wrongdoers. And remove our brothers and sisters from among them who are righteous. O servants of Allah, Allah commands justice, kindness and giving to relatives. He forbids immorality, evil and wrongdoing. He admonishes you so that you may remember. So remember Allah and He will remember you. And thank Him for the blessings that increase for you. And the remembrance of Allah is the greatest. And Allah knows what you do.
22:07And the end of the prayer. Al-Fatiha.
