Are You Too Sensitive? | Khutbah by Dr. Omar Suleiman

We live in a culture where every slight can become a microaggression, every disagreement can feel like an attack, and “protect your peace” can sometimes mean cutting people out the moment they make us uncomfortable.

But what happens when we lose the ability to overlook?

The Prophet ﷺ described the believer as samhaa—someone who is gracious, easygoing, and willing to let things go. This doesn’t mean tolerating abuse, ignoring oppression, or refusing to set necessary boundaries. It means learning to distinguish between genuine harm and the ordinary friction of living with imperfect people.

In this khutbah, Dr. Omar Suleiman explores what Islam teaches us about sensitivity, boundaries, forgiveness, and the forgotten strength of overlooking—and asks us to consider whether we’ve made ourselves too quick to take offense, cut people off, and slow to forgive.

00:00We begin by praising Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala and bearing witness that none has the right to be worshipped or unconditionally obeyed except for him. And we bear witness that Muhammad sallallahu alayhi wa sallam is his final messenger.
00:10We ask Allah to send his peace and blessings upon him, the prophets and messengers that came before him, his family and companions that served alongside him and those that follow in their blessed path until the day of judgment.
00:21We ask Allah to make us amongst them. Allahumma ameen. Dear brothers and sisters, what agitates you if you think about your
00:28senses? Think about your own radar. What gets on your radar and starts to make your system activate in a way that you're agitated by something that someone said or something that you feel like you're reading into a joke or you're reading into an argument or a misunderstanding that seems to have something else to it.
00:51What actually gets you going? What actually agitates you and gets on your nerves? There's a hadith that is an authentic hadith in Tirmidhi that the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said,
01:01He said, sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, shall I not tell you about one who is forbidden from entering into the fire or the fire is forbidden from touching him?
01:21It's an amazing hadith because it automatically starts off with, of course, you want to be that person. I don't want the fire to touch me and I don't want to touch the fire. I want nothing to do with the fire of the akhirah and the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said,
01:36He gave four characteristics sallallahu alayhi wa sallam and if you're reading a translation, they all sound exactly the same because it will basically translate into easygoing, soft, gentle, whatever it may be, but they actually have very important distinctions and I want you to measure yourself against each quality for a moment and ask yourself, do I fit this or not? And how do I get there if not?
02:05Number one, the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said, qareeb. Qareeb is someone that's accessible. It literally means close, that brings people close to them, that you can come close to, that you don't feel a barrier or you don't feel a hindrance in approaching that person. So it speaks to approachability. Do people feel like they can come to you for their needs? Do people feel like they can talk to you about something? Do people feel like they can ask you a question?
02:29And if you look at the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, he fits that and you can't say, well, he's busy or he belongs to this class of people. I mean, he is the most important person in society, the busiest person in society, a person who can say, I don't have any time or any need or please don't come near me. Like when you think about powerful people, there's a whole barrier there. Like don't approach them. Don't sit down before them. Don't just go up and shake their hand.
02:57No, like the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam was close to the people, amongst the people. So much so, ibghuni fil dhu'afa, find me amongst the downtrodden. I'm there, right? I'm amongst the people that are hurt and that are downtrodden and that are oppressed. So kullo qareeb. Are you approachable? Are you accessible? When people have a need or when people need to ask something.
03:19Then hayyin layyin. Hayyin means easy in a very specific way. The opposite of hayyin is heavy, something that's heavy, right? And so the ulama explain that in two ways, either burdensome in their presence, someone that's burdensome in their presence, or someone that takes something which should be small and magnifies it. So it becomes really big.
03:47So it becomes a source of awkwardness, it becomes a source of tension, and it really didn't have to be that way, right? So someone who's hayyin is hayyin in their presence. Like when they come into the gathering, when they're amongst people, they don't bring a heavy sentiment, a heavy burden upon the people. People don't have to worry about a heaviness with their presence and they also don't turn small things into big things, right?
04:13So they're not flammable in that sense, right? Little sparks are not going to turn into big fires. It's all right. They're hayyin, easy with their presence. Layyin speaks more to the manner in which you address people and talk to people. So layyin, the opposite of shouting, the opposite of being foul, the opposite of cursing, right?
04:33So a person whose presence is not just heavy, but whose actual behavior, like when they talk, when they speak to people, they berate them, they get really, really aggressive, very, very quickly. That's the opposite of someone that's layyin. And sahlan is someone that's easygoing. They don't overcomplicate things.
04:55Where do you want to go? Let's go wherever you want to go. Let's do this. Let's do that. They don't overcomplicate things or turn small things into big things. It's okay. They go with the flow and they are accommodating. So the ulama speak about sahlan in regards to being accommodating.
05:11Now there is one more quality which is the one I actually want to focus on in the khutbah. Which if you look in the characteristics of the believers, there's an athar, it's not an authentic hadith, there's a saying that's not a hadith in and of itself, but it's built off of a hadith, al-mu'min samhun. A believer is overlooking. And it comes from an authentic narration where the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said, rahimallahu imra'an samhan.
05:38May Allah have mercy on a person who is samhan, overlooking, and he specified, alayhi salatu wasalam, in this authentic narration, idha ba'a wa idha shtara wa idha aqtada. Alayhi salatu wasalam, he said, when he buys, when he sells, or when he makes a claim.
05:55And so using that practical manifestation, we can kind of work backwards into what that characteristic the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam is talking about is. Idha ba'a wa idha shtara wa idha aqtada. When a person is buying, when they're selling, they're easygoing, they overlook in that capacity, in an economic sense, they overlook a little bit here, a little bit there.
06:15I know it's kind of become like a sport of sorts, like when you go to umrah especially, like I'm going to haggle with this guy and I'm going to get my extra five riyals. Is it really worth it? I'm going to make sure that I get this extra ten, I'm going to make sure I get this extra, I'm going to pull everything that I possibly can out of this. I'm going to get whatever I can out of this transaction. Right? I'm giving that example because it's one that's really common because a lot of us are not used to that type of marketplace anymore. Right? But when you jump into it, it becomes like a sport of sorts.
06:43So, idha ba'a wa idha shtara, what the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam is talking about is like, whatever. And this does not excuse, by the way, al-mutaffifin, those who are cheating with the weights. This is a praiseworthy quality. This is how Islam balances justice with grace. The justice threshold is that you better not cheat even with a decimal point, .0001, or else you'll be from al-mutaffifin, waylul al-mutaffifin. Woe to those people that cheat with the weights.
07:11The prophetic part, the grace part, is what the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam is teaching, you know what? Keep the change. You know what? It's okay. Go ahead. Absolutely. Makes it easy. Right? Overlooks a little bit here, a little bit there. It's not a big deal. Right? Overlooks a little bit extra on the tip. Overlooks a little bit extra on the sale. And even if they make the claim, idha aqtada, they don't drag it out longer than it needs to be dragged out. You might have a legitimate claim, but they don't milk it. And they don't drag it out.
07:40Samhan, fine. It's never gonna be perfect even when I'm making a claim because there is a way to fulfill a claim of justice in Islam. But I'm not gonna take it further than it needs to go. I'm not gonna drag it out longer. Right? I'm not gonna let what could die in one setting live in a court system for two years. I'm not going to spend too much time or too much effort or too much energy trying to squeeze this. Right?
08:06I'll take what is mine. I'll take my right. And then khalas, some of the other stuff, alhamdulillah, I'm over it. I'll overlook it. Now, how did the ulama distinguish this particular quality of samhan, which is really profound because it matches the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam from a person who's just really forgiving. Right? And the way that the scholars talk about it is that when Allah 'azza wa jall calls our attention to 'afu, right, to pardon or to forgive people,
08:36it's usually in the face of an obvious transgression. Someone hurt you, forgive them. Right? Someone hurt you, forgive them. Someone did something wrong, there is reward in forgiving them. Right?
08:51The outsider, whether it's the arbiter or the community or whatever it is, is to put that person in a position where they can either seek justice or they can show grace and forgive. Forgive and you'll get a reward from Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala. So the standard of justice is upheld but the prophetic quality of forgiveness is there. That's when there is a clear and obvious transgression.
09:11What the ulama say is an even greater level of ihsan is not after the fact but even before when there are things that may or may not have even been transgressions in the first place. See, al-'afu and al-ghufran, that comes when there is clear transgression.
09:29As-samh, samhun, samhan comes when it may or may not have even been a transgression in the first place. What does that mean? A person said something that if I focus enough on it, I'm going to be able to extrapolate, hey, what did you mean by that? Right? I'm gonna turn that innocent comment into the talk of the day or the talk of the week or the talk of the year.
09:54MashAllah, we have ways to drench and squeeze things and turn them into all sorts of things, right? What was an innocent comment becomes a major obstacle, right? The new term, microaggressions. I'm not saying that those don't exist, that aggression doesn't exist, but I'm saying you turn every single joke, every single thing that was very small, every single argument, maybe just a person's personality, maybe a person going quickly into something, you project a suit of zan.
10:24An evil assumption, you say, I don't like the way that person looked at me. I don't like the way, you know, every time they give me salam, there's a, you know, or they look at me with their eyes in a certain way, or why do they always make these types of jokes? And it could be innocent, or it might not be. Samhan is a person who just does not waste their energy with that stuff, right? Who does not waste any time with that stuff.
10:50If Allah 'azza wa jall calls us to be forgiving with the big things, then what about with the things that fall in that category, where they may or may not have been something in the first place? Now, of course, there is a way of turning a mole into a mountain, and turning these small things into major barriers, and then creating narratives.
11:01And who do you think it makes happy when those narratives are created? That then destroy families, destroy communities, destroy relationships, pit two brothers against each other.
11:13Who do you think is happy? Shaytan loves that drama. He is the ultimate drama queen. He's going to sit there and say, yeah, and create a whole narrative out of a neutral incident.
11:26Why? Because at the end of the day, his goal is what? To put enough distance between people. And the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam is saying, a believer does not even waste their time engaging that stuff.
11:40Like, they don't even let it reach a stage two, where they'll think about it. Similar to how you cut off a sin at its root, where you don't let a passing thought become a settled thought, right?
11:50Become a fikrah, and then become a niyyah or an 'azimah, right? You don't let a passing thought become a settled thought, because once you settle it, then you'll decorate it in your mind, and you might actually want to commit the sin.
12:00You cut off the root of those types of interactions very early by not even engaging it. I'm not even going to think about it. No, it was probably nothing.
12:13Someone says, well, I trust my gut. The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said, Iyyakum wa az-zann fa inna az-zann akdhab al-hadith. Be careful of bad assumptions, of being suspicious, overly suspicious of people.
12:24Because that is the worst form of lying. You're like, but I didn't say anything. But you did say something here, and you said something here. And eventually you're going to say something here too. It's going to manifest on the tongue as well.
12:36And you create narratives around things that were supposed to be overlooked in the first place, that shouldn't have been engaged in the first place. That is the quality of the believer being samhan.
12:48Right? Overlooks, doesn't waste time, doesn't waste energy. And that is a quality that someone might see as weak, right? But the person who manifested it most was the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam in his relationship, in his behavior with the people,
13:03and here is what this does not mean. What this does not mean is that you ignore harm towards other people. That's number one.
13:14Especially if that harm comes from you. You see the hypocrites, Allah 'azza wa jall describes them as yaḥsabun. Right? They think every shay'ah, everything that's said is about them.
13:27Are you talking about me? Because there's an insecurity there. So anything that's said, you're talking about me, right? They take everything about themselves. It's not about you. No one's talking about you. Calm down. Right? The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam standard, did I harm somebody? Did I hurt you?
13:41Hey, maybe I said this and you didn't like it and I want to apologize just in case. I don't want to give the shaytan room for you to even think about that. Someone comes to the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam in the midst of battle, says,
13:54You poked me too hard. Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam pulls up his shirt, says, Take your revenge. I'd rather it be here than in the hereafter. That you're actually extra careful with yourself to not be the one that's harming. You pay attention to those small details when they emanate from you.
14:09So as much as you're overlooking, you have the sunnah of just overlooking small things that could be nothing. And in fact making excuses for people and internally fighting yourself, programming yourself to be like, whatever.
14:24It's not what it's being made out to be for yourself. You question yourself. Hey, you know, when I said that to that person, I saw there was a look on their face. They didn't like that joke.
14:37They didn't like the way that I said this. And just in case, I'm going to go to that person, I'm going to say, Hey, look, what I said offended you. I'm sorry. I want you to know I'm sorry. I really didn't mean it that way. What you will do is if there was actually a doubt that was in that person's mind,
14:48you squash it. So you win. Secondly, if there wasn't a doubt in that person's mind, what ends up happening? You build your relationship even further. Both times the shaytan loses. Why? Because that's considerate.
15:01Oh, you actually cared enough to ask me or to come to me and like, no, of course there was nothing, right? So it's not when it emanates from you that you downplay things. No, like what I said, what I did, perhaps my body language.
15:14It might have been offensive to you. Let me talk to you. Let me just in case clear the air. Alhamdulillah that will build. The other thing is that that doesn't mean that you don't set boundaries for actual patterns of abuse, for actual patterns of harm.
15:28There are ways to clearly set boundaries even for yourself. If something is being repeated over and over again before it blows up, before it explodes, there's a healthy way to do that to say, hey, listen, I know you don't mean it this way.
15:41I know that you don't, that you're not thinking about it in this way, but I just want you to know that sometimes when it's repeated over and over again, it's making me feel about it that way, but I'm not accusing your intention. I'm saying that I'm seeing it this way.
15:56Perhaps the shaytan is decorating in my head and I just want to squash it. So maybe it's better that this is not repeated, right? That this is not done. I'm talking about now not the clear abuse, by the way. I'm talking about what you might be reading as a pattern of actual transgression
16:07that you can't ignore anymore as being neutral. We already know you don't tolerate actual abuse. There is no harm, no reciprocation of harm. I'm still in the field of samah, right?
16:21Just being overlooking. Bring it up. So that shaytan doesn't have room to make it explode, but bring it up in a non-explosive environment and say that, look, I don't like the way this is being repeated and that's perhaps a weakness of me.
16:34And you never know what will come out of that. But insha'Allah ta'ala it will be good. It'll be something that is built. The third thing is this. The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam taught us to reserve our fire, to reserve our anger, to reserve our actual rage in a righteous way
16:47for the limits of Allah 'azza wa jall, not our own limits. Why are you making your ego so sacred? But the boundary of Allah 'azza wa jall has no sanctity whatsoever.
17:00Look at the wording of how the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam is described. Wa man taqama linafsihi qat. He never avenged himself sallallahu alayhi wa sallam. He overlooked things all the time. Things that the Bedouins did to him here or there
17:13could have become stories in the seerah for months. But it was squashed in the moment because he didn't make anything out of it sallallahu alayhi wa sallam. He kept it moving. He kept going. He never avenged himself. But when the hurmah, when the boundary of Allah was crossed,
17:26the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam stood up. That's where it comes out. That's where the anger comes out. That's where suddenly you take a stand, right? So your ego is not the sacred boundary.
17:40Allah 'azza wa jall's limits are the sacred boundary. And of that is the oppression towards other people. And of that is the oppression towards other people. I don't like the way that person is being treated. I don't like the way that person is being spoken to. Why are you ignoring this person?
17:54Why is this happening to this person? That's where it comes out because that's a boundary that Allah set. It's not your ego. And so remember I talked about in the beginning, you have your senses. Do you have a big ego or a big heart?
18:08A big heart will let you notice things that other people are not noticing that's being done towards other people. Or perhaps again, the gravity of Allah ﷻ's greatness in your heart that Allah ﷻ's boundaries are being transgressed.
18:22A big ego is where you take everything as being about you and towards you. And it's just not that serious. And a person has so much more air, such a lighter being,
18:36when they just don't waste their time with that. You know, 'Umar ibn 'Abd al-'Aziz رحمه الله, and I'll end with this. I want you to imagine 'Umar ibn 'Abd al-'Aziz giving the khutbah. He walked into the masjid and he accidentally bumped someone. Similar to how I might bump some of you sometimes
18:50and I apologize. Jazakumullah khair for your patience. Trying to get to the minbar. And when he did that, the man said to him, أَنْتَ مَجْنُونَ؟ Are you crazy? 'Umar ibn 'Abd al-'Aziz رحمه الله turned around and said, No, I'm sorry. Kept it going. And then by the time he gets to the minbar,
19:05he sees some guys going to beat the man up. Pick the man up. Right? How dare you speak to Amir al-Mu'minin that way? 'Umar ibn 'Abd al-'Aziz came back and said, What are you doing? They said, Did you hear what he said to you? He said, Yeah. He asked me a question. I responded. Let it go. Keep it moving. Khalas.
19:20It's not that big of a deal. This doesn't have to become the community's discussion for the next week. It's over. Squashed it in the moment. You think Allah ﷻ doesn't notice those small details? You think Allah won't reward you every single time you overlook?
19:34Just like you want Allah to overlook your major things. You also want Allah to overlook your minor things. May Allah ﷻ make us amongst those that are qareeb, hain, leen, sahlan, samhan, that have all of these qualities
19:47and not let us be fooled into thinking that these are qualities of weakness but instead make them qualities of strength. And for those who say that it's harder for me. In my personality, I'm very sensitive. I'm very thin-skinned. It's harder for me to do that.
20:01You know what that means? The reward for you combating it, your mujahidah is greater than a person who finds it easy to be easygoing. That simply means that your reward is greater for your mujahidah. It doesn't mean that it's an excuse for you not to strive. It means that the reward for your striving will be greater
20:16because your tendency will be more difficult to tune to those qualities. JazakumAllahu khayran. May Allah ﷻ make us of those people. Aqulu qawli hadha wa astaghfiru Allaha li wa lakum wa li jamee'i al-muslimin. Fa istaghfiru innahu huwa al-ghafuru al-rahim.
20:32Al-hamdu lillahi wa al-salatu wa al-salamu 'ala rasul Allah wa 'ala alihi wa sahbihi wa man walah. Allahumma ighfir lil-mu'mineen wa al-mu'minat wa al-muslimin wa al-muslimat al-ahya' minhum wa al-amwat. Innaka sami'un qareebun wa qabilu al-du'a'.
