The Life of Abu Bakr As-Siddiq (ra) | Khutbah by Sh. Ibrahim Hindy

Abu Bakr (ra) wasn't just the first man to accept Islam. He was the first to believe without hesitation, to sacrifice without calculation, and to stand beside the Prophet ﷺ when everyone else stepped back.

From freeing slaves and spending his wealth for Allah, to protecting the Prophet ﷺ during the Hijrah, his life is a lesson in unwavering conviction, humility, and trust in Allah.

In this khutbah, Shaykh Ibrahim Hindy explores what made Abu Bakr as-Siddiq (ra) the greatest Companion of the Prophet ﷺ and why his example remains as relevant today as ever.

00:00All praise is due to Allah alone. In Him we seek aid and assistance, and to Him we turn both in repentance and for forgiveness.
00:08Truly, him whom Allah guides, none can mislead. And he whom Allah leaves to go astray, there is none who can guide. And I bear witness that there is nothing worthy of worship save Allah alone.
00:18And that Muhammad, sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, is both His servant and His messenger.
00:24Allah, subhanahu wa ta'ala, after telling us the stories of the prophets, He tells us to follow their examples.
00:37Those are the ones guided by Allah, so in their guidance, follow. Likewise, Allah, subhanahu wa ta'ala, tells us,
That indeed, in the messenger of Allah is an excellent example for those who hope in Allah and the Last Day.
00:59Allah, 'azza wa jal, chose our prophets, and He tells us to follow their examples, their manners, their etiquettes, their character, their actions.
01:11And as Allah, subhanahu wa ta'ala, chose our prophets and messengers, He also chose their companions, their friends, their supporters, those who would stand by their sides,
01:23those who would have their back, those who would sacrifice with them and for them. Today, we will speak about the most consequential companion of our Prophet, sallallahu alayhi wa sallam.
01:35The one who is known to those old and young. The one mentioned in the Qur'an and described by his companionship to the Prophet, sallallahu alayhi wa sallam.
01:45One who did not worship an idol, neither in the era of Islam nor in Jahiliyyah. Who never drank wine, neither in Islam nor in Jahiliyyah. The first adult male to accept Islam.
01:57And if there are two billion Muslims today, and billions of Muslims from his day to this day, he is the first after the prophets and messengers.
02:10And of the greatest attributes of this great companion is that he never hesitated. Think about the last time someone asked you a favor.
02:21Even if they asked you for five dollars, you would think about it. You would consider, how does this affect me, my reputation, my life.
02:34If your spouse asks you for something, you might say, let me think about it, let me sleep on it. How risky is this to me? What's in it for me? And we might negotiate.
02:46If someone asked you for something, you might want to negotiate it. Why are you asking for this much? Why can't I give you that much? But our Prophet ﷺ said,
He said, there is no one I called or invited to Islam, except that they had kabwah, they had a hesitation.
03:11They had a reluctance. They held back, they were resistant. They were hesitating. And they think, and they contemplate, and they reflect over it.
03:23He said, Except Abu Bakr, radiyallahu ta'ala anhu. When I called him to Islam, he did not hesitate at all.
03:33This is because of his belief in the Prophet ﷺ. When he was asked again, in the middle of the day, in the worst heat of the summer,
03:44to leave behind everything he owned, his home, his family, his land, his wealth, his city, and to follow our Prophet ﷺ into the desert,
03:56chased by a bounty on their heads. Once again, he did not hesitate, radiyallahu anhu. Let's speak about this great companion, Abu Bakr as-Siddiq, radiyallahu ta'ala anhu.
04:07Before Islam, before the message of our Prophet ﷺ, unlike almost any other companion, Abu Bakr can claim and say that he never worshipped an idol for one day.
04:20And there's a story of this. He says his father took him, when he was a young boy, to look at the idols. And he told him, these are your gods, Hubal.
04:32These are your gods, and he named the idols, al-Lat and al-'Uzza and Hubal. And Abu Bakr, radiyallahu anhu, as a young child, is looking at them. And then he started to speak to them. He said to them, I'm hungry, feed me.
04:46And of course, they did not respond. He said to them, I'm thirsty, give me to drink. And of course, they did not respond. So he picked up some rocks and stones and he threw them towards the idols.
04:58They had the large idols standing, and beneath the large idols are the small idols around it. And the rocks that he threw knocked down the small idols, shattering some of them.
05:10He said to himself, how can I worship these idols, when they cannot defend themselves even against a stone that I throw at it. How then can they defend me? How can they feed me when I'm hungry?
05:23How can they help me when I'm oppressed? How can they guide me when I'm lost? How can they teach me when I'm ignorant? And so we see his fitrah, his natural disposition and connection to Allah, subhanahu wa ta'ala,
05:35at even the very young age, was pure. And had not been clouded by the evil and the misguidance of his era.
05:46Abu Bakr, radiyallahu anhu, as we knew, was a wealthy merchant. A man who was wealthy amongst Quraysh, looked up to amongst Quraysh, and was known for his knowledge of lineage, genealogy.
06:00And the Arabs prize their genealogy, their lineage. And so people would come to Abu Bakr sometimes from far away, telling him, tell us our lineage, tell us the lineage of this person or that person. And he would recite, this person is the son of this, is the son of that,
06:14and go all the way up, connecting their lineage. And so he was a well-respected man, and wealthy. And he had no benefit in accepting Islam,
06:25rather by accepting Islam, his reputation was then put at risk. It did not elevate his status; if anything, it cost him amongst his own people to be a Muslim.
06:37And he was, as we know, the first adult male to accept Islam. And what did he do with the wealth that he had? As he would walk through the streets of Mecca, and he would see the weak that are suffering, being tortured for their faith,
06:51all of the slaves that are being attacked and tortured for believing in Allah, subhanahu wa ta'ala, he used that money to buy their freedom. He famously bought the freedom of Bilal, radiyallahu anhu, and the freedom of many others.
07:05And his father once came to him and he said, Oh my son, when a man frees slaves, he should free the strong ones. The Arabs typically would not free the slaves; they would use their labor for free.
07:17But if they were going to free a slave, you would typically choose the slave who is strong. What do they mean by that? They're young, and they're strong, and they're able-bodied. Why?
07:28When you buy someone's freedom, that person will have a loyalty to you. They will feel in debt to you. And that means they will be by your side, that means they will help you, that means they will support you. So you want to free the one who is young and strong,
07:42who might become wealthy and help you with their wealth. And if not, if you are physically attacked, they will be there by your side and physically help you. So his father is telling him, when a man does free a slave, he chooses the strong.
07:55He doesn't choose the weak. And yet you are going around and you are freeing the women, and you are freeing the children, and you are freeing the weak, the old men. Why are you doing so? And Abu Bakr, radiyallahu anhu, said to his father,
08:09He says, I am freeing them. Oh my father, I am freeing them for the sake of Allah. I am not freeing them for my own sake. In another narration he says,
08:21Oh my father, I want what I want. I want something else. You are thinking about dunya? You are thinking about what advantage I'll get in the dunya? That's not what I want. I want what I want.
08:34What does he want? Allah, subhanahu wa ta'ala, would immortalize the sacrifice of Abu Bakr, radiyallahu anhu, in the Qur'an.
08:46As for the one who gives and he fears Allah, and he believes in the best reward, he believes in Jannah, he believes in Allah, subhanahu wa ta'ala,
08:59then we will ease him into the ease. We will ease him into the ease, meaning we will ease him into Jannah. And Allah, subhanahu wa ta'ala, mentions the sacrifice of Abu Bakr, radiyallahu anhu. In the books of seerah it says Abu Bakr spent almost the entirety of his wealth
09:13freeing the slaves in Mecca. Almost every Muslim slave Abu Bakr, radiyallahu anhu, was the one who freed them for the sake of Allah, subhanahu wa ta'ala.
09:26And Abu Bakr's standing was known amongst all the companions. It was recorded in Sahih al-Bukhari that Muhammad ibn Ali ibn Abi Talib, also known as Muhammad al-Hanafiyyah, the son of Ali ibn Abi Talib, he said, I went to my father one day and I said to him,
09:40Who was most beloved to Rasulallah, sallallahu alayhi wa sallam? He said, Ali, radiyallahu anhu, immediately answered and said, Abu Bakr. He said, Then I asked him, who after Abu Bakr?
09:52And he said, Umar, radiyallahu anhu. And he said, Umar radiyallahu anhu. And then he said, I was afraid to ask him who next because I was afraid he was going to say Uthman.
10:04He said, so instead I said, Thumma Anta. And then it is you, O my father. And Ali radiyallahu anhu said to his son,
10:17He said, O my son, your father is just an average person from the masses of the Muslims. I'm just a regular person. Of course, Ali radiyallahu anhu is being humble. He is showing humility. He is not an average person.
10:30He is of the greatest of the Sahaba. But we see how he testifies to Abu Bakr radiyallahu anhu. Likewise, we know that Amr ibn Al-As radiyallahu anhu
10:42asked the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam in front of everyone. He said, O Messenger of Allah, who is the most beloved to you of all the people? And Amr radiyallahu anhu thought the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam would choose him.
10:55And by the way, this is the skill of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam. He made every single person feel special such that Amr ibn Al-As thinks when he asks the Prophet,
11:06who do you love the most? He thinks the Prophet will say Amr. Because the Prophet has made him feel special. And the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam says, I love Aisha the most. So Amr radiyallahu anhu says,
11:19No, I don't mean the women. Obviously your wives are gonna be different. I don't mean the women. From the men, who do you love the most? And the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said, أبوها Her father, meaning Abu Bakr radiyallahu anhu.
11:31We know Amr radiyallahu anhu mentions, أَمَرَنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنْ نَتَصَدَّقَ that one day the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam commanded us to give charity.
11:44He said, so I decided on that day, I looked to all that I had and I decided on this day, I will outdo Abu Bakr. I will be ahead of him. I will surpass him. I will win. He said, So I gathered half of my wealth.
11:57And I went to the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam and I presented it to him. And the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said to me, What have you left for your family and your children? He said, I said to the Prophet,
12:10مثله, the same as what you see. Meaning half, this is half and the other half I've left for my family. He said, And then I saw Abu Bakr radiyallahu anhu arrive with so much wealth. And he gave it to the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam.
12:23And the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam asked him, O Abu Bakr, what have you left for your wives and your children? And Abu Bakr radiyallahu anhu said,
12:36I have left with them Allah and His Messenger. And Umar radiyallahu anhu said, On that day, I said to myself, I will never beat him. I will never outdo Abu Bakr radiyallahu anhu. He will always be ahead of me.
12:50The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam says in an authentic hadith in Tirmidhi, He said, He said, There is no one who has done us a favor, no one that has helped us except that we have repaid him.
13:04And this was the way of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam. He did not like that anyone would hold a favor over him. So if anyone did a favor, anyone helped him in any way, the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam would be fast in repaying the favor.
13:18Whatever they gave, the Prophet would give it back. The Prophet would help that person. They helped the Prophet, he would help them more. They supported the Prophet, the Prophet would support them more. He said, There is no one who has helped us except we have repaid them,
13:31except Abu Bakr radiyallahu anhu. For indeed what he has with us is a favor that Allah will repay him for it يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ
13:42Allah will repay him for it on the Day of Judgment. And then he said, Indeed no wealth has supported me better than the wealth of Abu Bakr radiyallahu anhu.
13:54No wealth has benefited me, and he means by this Islam, benefited the Prophet in his da'wah, in his Islam. No wealth has benefited him more than the wealth of Abu Bakr radiyallahu anhu. And the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam time and again would single out Abu Bakr radiyallahu anhu in praise.
14:07One of them, as we know, is that at the time of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, the Prophet built the houses of his wives, many of them against the masjid.
14:18So they had a door leading from their house to the masjid. So from the house of Aisha radiyallahu anha, there is a door that leads directly into the masjid.
14:32And many of the Sahaba did the same. They built houses and they would have one door right against the wall. They built their house against the wall of the masjid, on the other side of the wall of the masjid. And they would build a door that would open right into the masjid.
14:46The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam one day he said, He said there should not be a single door leading into the masjid except that it is sealed off. Like from now on all these doors are to be sealed off.
14:58Nobody should have direct access into the masjid. Except for Abu Bakr. Abu Bakr is the only one the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam allowed other than himself
15:12to have a door directly leading into the masjid. And this was again how the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam distinguished Abu Bakr radiyallahu anhu. We see of the beautiful and amazing things of Abu Bakr radiyallahu anhu is that so much of what he did was in secret.
15:26And so in Medina there was an old woman, a frail old woman that no one would care for her animals. And every morning before Fajr, before anyone was even awake, Abu Bakr radiyallahu anhu would go to her home and milk the goats for her.
15:40Quietly, without even being asked. And he would do this day after day after day, and no one knew about it except this old lady. And when he became the khalifah, the leader of the whole ummah,
15:54she said, I need to find someone else to help me. Abu Bakr now is the khalifah, he is the leader, he's not gonna have time for someone like me. And so she's looking around for someone to help her, and then in that same morning all of a sudden Abu Bakr radiyallahu anhu
16:07still shows up and milks the goat, and she tells him, why are you doing this? You are the khalifah of the Muslims, why are you coming and milking my goats? And he tells her,
16:20I am more in need of this now than I ever was before. I am more in need of doing this now than I ever was before. Meaning what? Meaning as he has become now more prominent, as he has become more important, he needs more humility.
16:34And he's willing to do even these small tasks that nobody cares about, that nobody is gonna give him credit for, that he is doing only for the sake of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala and to humble himself. Of the wisdoms of Abu Bakr radiyallahu anhu is that he reminds us to control our tongues.
16:48He would hold his tongue radiyallahu anhu and say, is that he reminds us to control our tongues. He would hold his tongue رضي الله عنه and say, هذا الذي أوردني الموارد. This is what has led me into difficulty.
17:02My tongue, things that I say that are wrong, when I let my tongue go loose, this is what causes me to fall into problems. He would also advise people to take care of their neighbors.
17:15No one should anger their neighbor. No one should harm their neighbor. He said, for indeed people will come and go. But your neighbor will always be your neighbor. Your neighbor will be next to you.
17:28So take care of those who are with you and are around you. Bismillah. Alhamdulillah. As-salamu 'ala rasulillahi wa 'ala alihi wa sahbihi wa man tabi'a.
17:41Of the reasons I wanted to speak about Abu Bakr radiyallahu anhu today, is that last week we spoke about the hijrah of the Prophet ﷺ. And we did not have time to speak about the role of Abu Bakr radiyallahu anhu
17:53in the hijrah of the Prophet ﷺ. When the Prophet ﷺ had commanded the believers to perform hijrah to Medina, Abu Bakr radiyallahu anhu kept going to the Prophet ﷺ
18:07and saying, give me permission to do hijrah. And the Prophet ﷺ would tell him, wait. And he would ask the Prophet ﷺ another time and the Prophet ﷺ would tell him, wait. And so Abu Bakr radiyallahu anhu had a small feeling. Maybe the Prophet ﷺ would ask me to do hijrah with him.
18:21He said, so I prepared two fully laden camels. And I prepared all of the provisions, the food and everything ready for me and him. Even though the Prophet ﷺ never said to him a word. Never said to him, I will go with you. He just had the feeling.
18:34And then 'A'ishah radiyallahu anha narrates one day, in the middle of the day, when people are sleeping, when the day is the hottest. She said, we saw someone walking to our house and his face was completely wrapped. And he walked up to our house
18:48and he removed his covering and it was the Prophet ﷺ. And he sat with Abu Bakr radiyallahu anhu and he said to him,
19:00Indeed Allah has given me permission to leave. Meaning permission to make hijrah. And Abu Bakr radiyallahu anhu immediately began to say to the Prophet, Companionship, O Messenger of Allah, companionship.
19:14Let me be your companion. And the Prophet ﷺ said to him, We will be companions, O Abu Bakr. And immediately when Abu Bakr heard this, he began to cry. He began to weep.
19:27And 'A'ishah radiyallahu anha was young. She said, I never understood. She said, I never understood when people would say he cries out of happiness.
19:40I never understood what it means for someone to cry out of happiness until on that day I saw my father crying out of happiness that he would be with the Prophet ﷺ. And think about why Abu Bakr radiyallahu anhu is crying.
19:53He is so happy that he will be with the Prophet. For what? For a walk from Mecca to Medina in the most difficult of circumstances. While they are being hunted. While there is a bounty on their head. While there will be those coming to kill them.
20:06And he is crying out of happiness that he will be with the Prophet ﷺ. And so they go and they find the cave to hide in. While Quraysh is looking for them. And Abu Bakr radiyallahu anhu tells the Prophet,
20:18By Allah I will enter the cave before you. By Allah you will not enter until I enter. Why? Because any type of cave or crevice in the mountains, in the desert, there could be scorpions, there could be all kinds of things that could harm you.
20:32So he enters into the cave and he looks around. And he starts to rip up his garment to plug any hole so that no scorpion or anything can come out of it to harm them. And he plugs all of the holes in the cave.
20:45And then he tells the Prophet ﷺ to come down. And they stay in the cave and as they are sleeping, Subhanallah, Allah causes some kind of animal or reptile or scorpion to come and bite Abu Bakr radiyallahu anhu.
20:59And he awakens at night and he has a huge bruise where he has been bitten. And he does not want to make any sound to awaken the Prophet ﷺ out of his love and respect for the Prophet ﷺ.
21:13So he suppresses his pain and he does not make any sound. And yet the tears from his eyes start to drop on the face of the Prophet ﷺ while the Prophet is sleeping. So the Prophet awakens and he says,
21:27what has happened and he sees the hand of Abu Bakr radiyallahu anhu. So the Prophet ﷺ takes some of his saliva and he puts it on this wound.
21:37And immediately the wound goes away and Abu Bakr radiyallahu anhu is healed. And we know the famous story that when the bounty hunters arrive at the very same spot where the Prophet ﷺ and Abu Bakr are hiding.
21:50And they're walking around and they're looking for them. And they're hiding in this cave or this crevice that's really in the ground. And Abu Bakr and the Prophet ﷺ can see them walking around them.
22:04And Abu Bakr radiyallahu anhu tells our Prophet ﷺ, Ya Rasulallah, if they just look to their feet they will find us. They'll see us. And the Prophet ﷺ said to him,
What do you think about two people? The third of them is Allah ﷻ. And Allah ﷻ captures this in the Qur'an,
That remember when they are in the cave and he says to his friend,
22:36to his companion, Allah is describing Abu Bakr as the companion of the Prophet ﷺ. As the friend of the Prophet ﷺ. Remember when he says to his friend,
22:50do not be sad, do not grieve, indeed Allah is with us. This is Abu Bakr radiyallahu ta'ala anhu. This is his standing in the sight of Allah ﷻ and in the sight of the Prophet ﷺ.
23:02And the final story I will share with you, is a story of when Abu Bakr radiyallahu anhu got into a small argument. Got into an argument. And they are human beings.
23:14And sometimes human beings might get on each other's nerves for whatever reason. They got into an argument and Abu Bakr radiyallahu anhu said something to 'Umar. He upset 'Umar. He said something that maybe cut him in a certain way.
23:27And Abu Bakr radiyallahu anhu as soon as he said whatever it was he said, by the way we don't know what he said. And the narrator who for sure knows what he said does not tell us. Because as a Muslim we cover the faults of each other.
23:39But they are telling us the story because there is benefit in it. Immediately Abu Bakr apologizes to 'Umar. He tells him, I'm sorry, please forgive me. Please pardon me. And 'Umar radiyallahu anhu is really upset.
23:52And he tells him, no I will take this to the Prophet. And so Abu Bakr radiyallahu anhu races to the Prophet ﷺ. And the Prophet ﷺ sees him coming and he says to the companions around him,
Indeed your companion, your friend has gotten into some trouble. Why is he running to me like this? He's gotten into some trouble. And Abu Bakr radiyallahu anhu runs to the Prophet ﷺ
24:19and he tells him the story. This is what happened to the Messenger of Allah and I was wrong. And what I said was incorrect and I apologized to him already. And then Umar radiyallahu anhu comes and he complains to the Prophet about what happened.
24:33And the Prophet ﷺ gets angry. But he's not angry at Abu Bakr radiyallahu anhu. He's angry at Umar. And he says,
24:46Are you going to abandon my friend? Are you going to abandon my companion?
He said, Wallahi, I came to all of you. And I said to you, I am the Messenger of Allah.
25:10And all of you called me a liar. All of you said I lied. And Abu Bakr said, you spoke the truth. This is Abu Bakr radiyallahu anhu. Without hesitation, he followed our Prophet ﷺ.
25:24His friend before Islam, and his friend during Islam, and his friend in the Qur'an, and his friend in every step of the life of our Prophet ﷺ.
25:34May Allah ﷻ put in our hearts the love of Abu Bakr and Umar and Uthman and Ali, and gather us with them on the Day of Judgment, and allow us to have the love that they had for Rasulullah ﷺ.
