The Firsts (Sahaba Stories) | The Forerunners of Islam
A Foiled Conspiracy: Umayr ibn Wahb (ra) & Safwan ibn Umayyah (ra) | The Firsts
After the Battle of Badr, two cousins secretly conspired to kill the Prophet ﷺ. Neither of them could have predicted where this conspiracy would eventually take them.
The Firsts is a weekly video series that chronicles the lives of the Sahaba (the companions of the Prophet ﷺ) during and after the time of the Prophet ﷺ.

00:00Alhamdulillah, we finished off now a bulk of a dimension from the seerah of the Prophet
00:13sallallahu alayhi wa sallam and many of the companions that were otherwise unknown, specifically from Ta'if. One of the things that I want to do at this phase of the first is introduce
00:23you to different dimensions of converts, right? So different groupings of people who embraced Islam, particularly now we're looking at the end of the life of the Prophet sallallahu
00:34alayhi wa sallam and that batch of converts that comes in here. And so we talked about the enemies of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam who held out until the very end.
00:44We talked about the family of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam that held out until the end. Then we spoke about now those who embraced Islam from Ta'if. So what we're going to do now inshallah is actually look at those that attempted to assassinate the
00:59Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam. So people who came within inches of actually murdering the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam and who Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala guided their hearts to Islam. And it's a very interesting bulk of biographies. And then what I want
01:13to do bidnillah ta'ala is look at some of the chiefs that embraced Islam from outside. So you kind of have the dimension of amul wufood, the year of delegations and some of
01:23the chiefs that came from outside later on and embraced Islam with the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam. So tonight bidnillah ta'ala we're actually going to cover two companions
01:34together because their stories are so inseparable. And usually you only get a glimpse of the story of one of them. But to bring them together bidnillah ta'ala allows us to understand this
01:47particular group of people. And we'll probably cover an entire lecture just on those that tried to assassinate the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam. And we only have a paragraph about them in the seerah of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam. So you can see the way that
02:00he interacted with each of those people as literally they're within inches of putting a dagger through the messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam. So the two people that we're
02:09going to talk about today are Umair ibn Wahb radiyaAllahu ta'ala anhu and Safwan ibn Umayyah radiyaAllahu ta'ala anhu. Umair ibn Wahb and Safwan ibn Umayyah radiyaAllahu ta'ala anhu.
02:23Now I want to give a little bit of background. So obviously in the beginning this is where the note takers get to take some notes and everybody else gets lost with the tribe names. The name of the tribe is Banu Jumaah. Banu Jumaah. And so when you hear someone as Jumaahi like
02:39Abi Mahdura, Jumaah is a tribe from Quraysh. And it has wider implications in the region
02:47at the time. So Banu Jumaah has several famous villains and heroes from the seerah. But first
02:56and foremost the villains. Umayyah ibn Khalaf. Umayyah ibn Khalaf who of course is the father of Safwan who we're going to be speaking about inshaAllah ta'ala. But Umayyah was most
03:08famous for his torture of Bilal radiyaAllahu ta'ala anhu. And Umayyah ibn Khalaf is the chief of Banu Jumaah. Now there's something very important here for those of you that
03:18read in the history or you're listening to a khutbah and you hear Banu Umayyah. Banu Umayyah has nothing to do with Umayyah ibn Khalaf. It's actually a misconception. I see it sometimes even when some of the secondary writers of seerah when they're not looking at the primary
03:31sources. Banu Umayyah has nothing to do with Umayyah ibn Khalaf. That's a sub-tribe of Banu Abdi Shams. So Banu Jumaah is its own separate tribe. Umayyah ibn Khalaf is the
03:43chief of the tribe of Jumaah. So Umayyah ibn Khalaf al-Jumaah. And this tribe is one of the elite tribes of Mecca. Smaller in number but very much so of the nobles distinguished
03:55by their wealth. They had the responsibility of perfuming all of the idols and they largely ran the Uud market if you will of Mecca. So all of the sweet scents and the oils go
04:07back to them. A very wealthy tribe. And Umayyah is known for his arrogance and he's known for the way that he treated Bilal radiyaAllahu ta'ala anhu, the torture of Bilal radiyaAllahu
04:17ta'ala anhu. Of course other than Umayyah ibn Khalaf you have Ubayyah ibn Khalaf who is famous for what? Can anybody tell me what he's famous for? The only man killed by the
04:28hand of the Prophet sallAllahu alayhi wa sallam. A man who swore that he would kill the messenger of Allah sallAllahu alayhi wa sallam. He pursued the Prophet sallAllahu alayhi wa sallam in Uhud. The Prophet sallAllahu alayhi wa sallam threw a spear as he was pursuing
04:41and it nicked him on the side of his throat. He is the one man who died from the hand of the Prophet sallAllahu alayhi wa sallam. And the Prophet sallAllahu alayhi wa sallam said
04:49the worst person on the day of judgment. A person. Qatala nabiyyahu al-qatala nabiyyahu. A person who is the worst on the day of judgment. Someone who killed his Prophet or his Prophet
05:01killed him. And so he's the only person in the history of this ummah that was killed by the hand of the messenger of Allah sallAllahu alayhi wa sallam. You also have Uthman ibn
05:11Mad'un radiAllahu ta'ala anhu. Zainab ibn Mad'un radiAllahu anha who is the sister of Uthman and the wife of Sayyidina Umar radiAllahu ta'ala anhu. So some of the powerful and noble
05:22ones as well. Now the two that we're going to talk about, Safwan ibn Umayyah, self-explanatory that he is the son of Umayyah ibn Khalaf, and his first cousin who is Umayr ibn Wahab.
05:38Umayr ibn Wahab. Wahab and Umayyah are brothers. Wahab, so his full name is Umayr ibn Wahab ibn Khalaf. Safwan ibn Umayyah ibn Khalaf. So their first cousins. Safwan ibn Umayyah
05:52and Umayr ibn Wahab. May Allah subhanAllah be pleased with them. So let's get into their story inshAllah ta'ala and what makes this story so compelling and why you can't tell
06:02it apart from each other. These two men inherited the enmity of the Prophet sallAllahu alayhi wa sallam, but they fit a bit of an awkward mold. Their fathers were very old, and so
06:16while their fathers were at the chief of opposition, they are not considered of the younger descendants of the chiefs of the people of Mecca. They themselves are elderly, and elderly in the
06:29sense that they're grown men and they are noble in their own right. They have children that are old enough to fight the Prophet sallAllahu alayhi wa sallam as well. So even though their
06:37fathers are engaged in warfare, they too are old enough to have multiple wives, multiple children that are also in the enmity of the Prophet sallAllahu alayhi wa sallam. They
06:49have inherited it and they have a lot of pride in what their fathers have passed down to them and what their tribe calls them to. Umayr ibn Wahab was nicknamed, he was one of the
07:03people, he was nicknamed Shaytan Quraysh. Shaytan Quraysh. So that tells you everything you need to know about his opposition to the Prophet sallAllahu alayhi wa sallam and the Muslims. He absolutely hated the Prophet sallAllahu alayhi wa sallam and was a fierce enemy of
07:17the Messenger of Allah sallAllahu alayhi wa sallam. And on the day of Badr he shows up, and of course Safwan, his first cousin, is fighting under his father Umayr, and Umayr
07:29was a skilled spy. This will give you some context to a conversation later on. So Umayr, before the Battle of Badr takes place, Umayr is dispatched by the Meccans to basically
07:43see what's going on with the Muslim army before the Battle of Badr starts. He comes back to Abu Jahl, to the Meccans, and he tells them that I counted 300 men, which by the way is
07:56spot on, right? So he counted the number of Muslims. He counted the horses, he counted every single shield and spear, he gave a full report of how they looked. And while Abu Jahl
08:11and many of the Meccans saw an easy opportunity here because they were far more equipped, the Muslims were not equipped for a battle here, they were being ambushed basically because
08:22they had gone out on an expedition but not on a full out battle. Umayr said, I have a bad feeling about this, I think we should go back. There's something about what he saw
08:33in the Muslims that day, the dedication, the faith, the iman, the certainty, that even though they were outnumbered and out-weaponed, he said something about them doesn't look
08:46right to me, we should go back to Mecca. Now of course Abu Jahl, Abu Jahl was the one that was shaming all of the chiefs that had the opinion that maybe we should go back from
08:56Badr. So Abu Jahl mocks him, shames him, and shames all of those who have the opinion that we should not go forth with this battle. So they go forward. Now Umayr, he and his son
09:10are fighting the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam, so Umayr and his son Wahab, so Umayr ibn Wahab and Wahab ibn Umayr are both fighting against the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam that day. Safwan ibn Umayr, his cousin, is fighting against the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi
09:24Wasallam alongside his father Umayr ibn Khalaf. There is an interesting ayah in the Quran here that I guarantee you most Muslims do not understand the context of and subhanAllah
09:34it's very rich in this context. It's the ayah in Surah Al-Anfal, verse 48, where Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala says,
09:49Remember the day that the devil beautified, the shaytan beautified their evil deeds to them and he told them, no one will be victorious over you, I am your protector. I am your protector.
10:04And then Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala mentions that once the two armies met, Once the two armies met, he fell back on his heels and he said,
10:17إِنِّي بَرِيءٌ مِنْكُمْ I am free from you. إِنِّي أَرَىٰ مَا لَا تَرَوْنَ I see what you do not see. إِنِّي أَخَافُ اللَّهَ I fear Allah. وَاللَّهُ شَدِيدُ الْعِقَابِ And Allah is severe in His punishment.
10:30What is this referring to? It's actually referring to right before the battle of Badr. SubhanAllah, look at the richness of this ayah and understanding this because we always see it from the other side.
10:43The Muslims saw the angels come down. They felt the presence of the mala'ika, the angels come down to support them on the day of Badr.
10:51Jibreel Alayhi Salaam and that group of the veterans of the mala'ika of Badr, the best angels to ever live are the ones that fought on the day of Badr. According to Jibreel Alayhi Salaam.
11:04Jibreel Alayhi Salaam asked the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam that what do you say about the people of Badr amongst you, meaning the sahaba that fought on the day of Badr. The Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam said they're the best of us. Jibreel Alayhi Salaam said, وَكَذَٰلِكَ هُمْ عِنْدَنَا
11:18And likewise with us, they're the best of us. The angels that fought on the day of Badr have a rank amongst the mala'ika. So what's happening here?
11:27Before the battle of Badr, Umayyad ibn Wahab sees what appears to be Suraq ibn Malik. Suraq ibn Malik, you all know who Suraq ibn Malik is, right? Who is he?
11:40Someone tell me, because we covered him before, and don't be afraid to get it wrong. I prefer a wrong answer to no answer. He was the bounty hunter of the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam on the hijrah, right?
11:53He pursued the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam on the hijrah, and then Allah Azawajal guided him and he became a Muslim. Imagine this, Suraq appears to the disbelievers as one of them on his horse and everything,
12:07and it was actually the shaytan. So shaytan took the form of Suraq ibn Malik while the angels are on the other side, and
12:17Umayyad ibn Wahab sees him, and al-Harith ibn Hisham sees him, and he says to them these words, laa ghaaliba lakum al-yawm, no one will overcome you today from the people.
12:30wa inni jaarun lakum, and I have your back, I am with you. And they thought that it was Suraq ibn Malik basically getting the army energized before the day of Badr. Now what happened is, Umayyad ibn Wahab is narrating this as a disbeliever who became
12:45a believer later on. What happened is that suddenly Suraq completely flips the script. And he says, inni bari'un minkum, I have nothing to do with you, and he runs away from
12:58the battlefield. What happened here? And they're so confused because that's not like Suraq ibn Malik to get scared. And there's a lot that kind of is implied here, that Suraq had not yet made his Islam
13:10public, the actual Suraq ibn Malik radiyaAllahu ta'ala anhu, this is still early on enough after the Hijrah, to where that's possible. Or they would have thought he came back, whatever it is.
13:20The point is, it's unlike Suraq ibn Malik to be riling everybody up and then suddenly to basically freak out and then run away from the battlefield and say I have nothing to do with you all. What happened here?
13:33The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam said that the worst day of the year for the shaytan is what day? The day of Arafah. Shaytan hates the day of Arafah. His worst day of the year is the day of Arafah.
13:47Why? Because of the forgiveness of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala. Except the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam said, for the day of Badr. They said, why ya Rasulullah? Because he saw Jibreel alayhi wasallam and the angels.
14:00So when shaytan saw Jibreel alayhi wasallam show up to the battlefield, he ran away. So shaytan was excited on the day of Badr because he thought, that's it. We're going to end Islam today.
14:12SubhanAllah, there's so much that's relevant to us. They're outnumbered, they're overwhelmed. We're going to end them. And he's riling up Abu Jahl and he's riling up Umayyad ibn Wahhab and he's riling these people up.
14:25But then Allah caused him to see Jibreel alayhi wasallam on the other side. SubhanAllah, this is so important in these lessons of victory and defeat. While two armies are seeing each other, another two armies are seeing each other.
14:37And we are not privy to those two armies seeing each other. The angels and the shayateen. And when he saw Jibreel alayhi wasallam, he fled the battlefield and said, I have nothing to do with you all.
14:51So Umayyad ibn Wahhab is the one who saw that, who had that interaction with the shaytan posing as Suraq ibn Malik on the day of Badr.
15:01Now, SubhanAllah, the battle goes on and his son Wahhab is captured by Rifa'a ibn Rafi' al-Ansari radiAllahu ta'ala anhu.
15:12So Rifa'a captures his son Wahhab and he takes him as a prisoner. Umayyad is fighting on his horse, very, very brave. He's knocked off of his horse.
15:24SubhanAllah, this is something that, you know, there's a narration about it and I try to visualize it and it's something of how Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala brings life truly from the dead.
15:34Umayyad as an enemy of the Muslims remembers being knocked off of his horse and wounded. And he remembers one of the Muslims taking his sword and putting his sword through him
15:48until he says what? The tip of his sword hit the hasa, hit the stones under me. And guess what? SubhanAllah, I want you to imagine being in his place.
16:02Umayyad says that he thought he killed me and he said, barad al-layl, and then he said
16:10the night time came and I woke up and I was between the dead, the casualties from Quraysh and Badr. And the sword had gone through me but I wasn't dead.
16:24Can you imagine waking up at night in the middle of the desert, looking around and seeing 70 people around you killed? And your enemy thought that they killed you and somehow you've been given the second chance
16:38at life and looking and seeing the sword and where it went but it didn't puncture enough of you to kill you. And he said, so I got up. I mean, subhanAllah, it's like a nightmare, right? Waking up in a nightmare.
16:51Imagine what Allah wanted for this man. I got up from between them and I went to Mecca and I managed to treat myself and basically to get to recover from that wound.
17:05When you talk about being shaken, it doesn't get more spooky than that, right? Like I woke up amongst the dead ones of Badr. I thought I was dead. The person who killed me from the Muslims thought I was dead but subhanAllah, Allah
17:20spared me. And then the next part of the story.
17:26Umair ibn Wahab goes back to Mecca and his cousin Safwan ibn Umayyah is obviously livid
17:37over what happened in Badr as well because Safwan's father was killed by who on the day of Badr? Who killed Umayyah ibn Khalaf on the day of Badr? Bilal radiAllahu ta'ala anhu.
17:48So Umayyah used to torture Bilal, drag him through the streets. Safwan would have been witness, party to that, a part of that entire system.
17:59And Allah subhanAllah ta'ala humiliated Umayyah ibn Khalaf to be killed by the same man that he used to drag around the streets who was saying, Ahad un Ahad under his whip and under his stone.
18:09And Allah subhanAllah ta'ala caused on the day of Furqan, on that day, for Umayyah to die at the hands of Bilal radiAllahu ta'ala anhu. So Bilal was given his justice radiAllahu ta'ala anhu on that day.
18:23But the whole atmosphere in Mecca is absolutely depressing. So we see it from the Muslim side on Uhud when we talk about the emotions of Uhud and how every house in Medina was struck with a death, with a casualty in Uhud.
18:37In Badr, every single home in Mecca was struck by a casualty from the Mushrikeen. Now of course their dead are in hellfire. But every single one of them is struck by a casualty. They also have prisoners that are in Medina.
18:52So some of the high profile Meccans are also captives with the Prophet sallAllahu alayhi wa sallam in Medina. So the sentiment in Mecca is angry. It's revenge. It's sadness. They also don't believe in an Akhirah. So what do you console these people with?
19:06You console the believers with قَتْلَانَا فِي الْجَنَّةِ وَقَتْلَاكُمْ فِي النَّارِ Our dead are in paradise, your dead are in hellfire. What do you console yourselves with in Mecca after this great humiliation and this great loss?
19:17So they're stuck and they're extremely depressed and they're full of vengeance and From the day that Badr ends they're already thinking about how they can plot against the Prophet sallAllahu alayhi wa sallam and
19:30Get revenge against the Prophet sallAllahu alayhi wa sallam so Umayr Goes to Safwan and he says let's take a walk Because
19:45Walking and talking to one another helps us pass the time of this tragedy. He said let's go for a walk and let's talk because We're all dwelling in this depression About what happened to us in Badr. So let's talk
20:00فَذَكَرَ أَصْحَابَ الْقَلِيب وَمُصَابَهُمْ And so they started to speak about Ashab al-Qalib the people of the Qalib and What happened to them?
20:11If you read the people of al-Qalib, al-Qalib refers to the cemetery of the Mushrikeen of the disbelievers in Badr Okay, so for them
20:21Basically, it's a mass grave of and you can imagine the stench and the evil from there subhanAllah Imagine where Abu Jahl is buried and Umayyah is buried and these people who were at the forefront of oppressing the Prophet
20:36SallAllahu alayhi wa sallam and that's where they are buried. Imagine the amount of fire and punishment Right and bitterness in that place So they spoke about al-Qalib and they started to speak about their friends who were killed and everyone in Mecca is
20:49You know, there's one degree of separation right especially when we start talking about who's married to who? Everyone's related somehow so they start mentioning their fathers and they start mentioning their uncles and they start mentioning all of these people that have been killed and Safwan says to Umayyah
21:06Safwan says Wallahi la khayra fil a'ishi ba'dahum There's no point of living like there's no sweetness to life after they've been killed There's no good in living after them
21:19right like What happiness what joy is there? So Umayyah says sadaqta wallah, you've told the truth and then Umayyah lets his tongue slip He says amma wallahi
21:32lawla daynun alayya laysa indi qada'uhu He said I swear by Allah if I didn't have a debt upon me If I wasn't buried in debt that I still haven't paid off wa a'yalun akhsha alayhimul dhay'a
21:46dhay'ata ba'di and if I didn't have family that I would worry about if I was killed he said la rakibtu ila muhammadin sallallahu alayhi wasallama hatta aqtula obviously he didn't say sallallahu alayhi wasallam
21:59I'm saying that he said I would ride to Muhammad sallallahu alayhi wasallam and kill him right now if I wasn't worried about my debt and I wasn't worried about my family I would go straight to Yathrib and I would kill the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam
22:14fa inna li fihim illa and he said I have an excuse to make it to Medina ibni asirun fi aydihim my son is a captive so it would be easy for me to go in there on the premise that I'm trying to rescue my son and then I'd kill Muhammad sallallahu alayhi wasallam
22:28and whatever I'd be killed but I want revenge there's no point in living after all that has happened to us in Badr so Umair is narrating this he says Safwan sees the moment
22:42Safwan saw an opening he said well if that's the case he said alayhi adaynuk I'll take care of your debt ana aqdihi ank I'll pay off all of your debts wa ayaluka ma ayali uwasihim ma baqoo
22:56and your family is like my family I'll take care of them as long as they're alive so basically you have no excuse now if you really want to go kill the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam and get revenge I've got your money Umair was the richest man in Mecca
23:10at this point alright there is no one and Allah knows best who has more wealth than him at this point in Mecca he is the wealthiest he has plenty of money to spend
23:24and that's part of what makes it so miserable as some of the biographers would write when you're used to being able to throw money at everything and get it solved that's when it frustrates you even more I can't pay anyone to go take out the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam and all these problems go away
23:39and I have all the money in the world so okay fine you want to go kill the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam I've got your back I'll take care of all of your debts and your family is my family I will spend on them until they pass away from this world
23:53so Umair says in that case faqtum alayya sha'ni wa sha'nik this conversation stays between you and me no one should know about this conversation except you and me and then Umair
24:07takes a sword and he takes that sword to someone who produces poison he dips the sword in poison and then he conceals it and then he makes his way to al-Madinah
24:21with the intention to kill the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam imagine he's leaving from Mecca to Madinah with the intention of murdering the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam he knows that he's going to be killed in the process but he's so bitter over what has happened he stabbed the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam
24:36and he doesn't mind being killed in the process subhanAllah how history changes and what he finds he says when I got to Madinah Umar bin Khattab radiyaAllahu ta'ala anhu was sitting in the masjid
24:50and he had all these young people surrounding him yattahaddathuna an yaumi badr and Umar was telling them about what happened on the day of Badr so basically you had all these young people that missed the day of Badr and of course
25:04Badr was one of those things where if you were there you weren't there because it was far away from Madinah and many of the Ansar didn't get to participate on the day of Badr so imagine he says Umar radiyaAllahu ta'ala anhu is speaking to them
25:18wayathkuroona ma akramahumallahu bihi wama araahum min adoo'ihim and Umar radiyaAllahu ta'ala anhu is talking about the miracles that Allah subhanAllah bestowed upon them and the humiliation of the enemies and all of these people are sitting around Umar and they are in the masjid
25:32and their eyes are wide and Umar radiyaAllahu ta'ala anhu with his booming voice and posture is talking about everything that happened in Badr and then Umair walks to the door of masjid an-nabwi Umar radiyaAllahu ta'ala anhu catches him with his eye
25:46and Umar radiyaAllahu ta'ala anhu says in no uncertain terms haathal kalb adoo'ullah that dog is the enemy of Allah Umair ibn Wahab wallahi ma jaa illa bi sharr I swear by Allah he is only coming with an evil intention
26:01I can see it in him Umar radiyaAllahu ta'ala anhu saw him, looked at his face saw him at the door of the masjid he said no no no, he has no good intentions and Umar radiyaAllahu ta'ala anhu he said watch him
26:15told the ansar watch him he went and he told the Prophet sallAllahu alayhi wa sallam haathal adoo'ullah the enemy of Allah, Umair has come wallahi ma jaa illa bi sharr he is coming with evil intentions ya nabiyaAllah, be careful
26:29oh Prophet of Allah, be careful and watch him I don't trust him and I don't trust his movements so Umar radiyaAllahu ta'ala anhu is spot on with reading the situation so Umar tells the ansar to go stand next to the Prophet sallAllahu alayhi wa sallam
26:43basically in case Umair tries to pounce that you can protect the Prophet sallAllahu alayhi wa sallam Umair is waiting patiently to enter upon the Prophet sallAllahu alayhi wa sallam Umar radiyaAllahu anhu went and checked with the Prophet sallAllahu alayhi wa sallam
26:57Umar did not come back to Umair and say tafadhal the Prophet will see you now what did Umar radiyaAllahu anhu do Umair had his sword hanging around his neck Umar radiyaAllahu anhu grabbed the sword from behind him choked him and dragged him to the Prophet sallAllahu alayhi wa sallam
27:11choking him so he comes into the Prophet sallAllahu alayhi wa sallam's room and Umar radiyaAllahu anhu is literally strangling him and the Prophet sallAllahu alayhi wa sallam says arsilu ya Umar leave him alone
27:26let him go Umar so he lets him go and the Prophet sallAllahu alayhi wa sallam says to him come closer to me Umair go ahead fadana
27:40so he came close to the Prophet sallAllahu alayhi wa sallam Umar radiyaAllahu anhu is watching and is ready to snap the man's neck so he says to the Prophet sallAllahu alayhi wa sallam an'imu sabahan an'imu sabahan
27:54which basically means what? good morning now by the way there are so many little lessons here subhanAllah the Prophet sallAllahu alayhi wa sallam when he said an'imu sabahan and it actually says in narration
28:08wa kana tahiyyata ahl aljahliya baynahum that this was the way that the people would greet each other in the days of ignorance the Prophet sallAllahu alayhi wa sallam said that qad akramanaAllahu bi tahiyyatin khayrim min tahiyyatik ya Umair
28:22Allah has given us a greeting better than this greeting of yours O Umair and it is tahiyyatu ahl aljannah it is the way that the people of jannah will greet each other which is assalamu alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh
28:36one very important lesson here by the way subhanAllah is you know something very small which is when you speak to someone in your family or you speak to someone that you're very close with it's customary to not offer salam like salam is a formality that's reserved for strangers
28:51but the Prophet sallAllahu alayhi wa sallam is so sensitive to it that when you speak to your family if you speak to your spouse when you speak to your children the first thing you should say is what? assalamu alaykum
29:05that this is the way that we're trained Allah gave us something better than marhaba and sabah alkhair Allah gave us assalamu alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh so use that say assalamu alaykum between each other now Umair can barely hide his disdain for the Prophet sallAllahu alayhi wa sallam
29:21and he says in kuntu biha la haditha ahdin ya Muhammad he said look this is all new to me I say an'imu sabahin because that's what we're used to so this whole Islam thing is new to me
29:35tahiyyat al ahl al jannah the way that the people of jannah is new to me sorry but not sorry basically an'imu sabahin so the Prophet sallAllahu alayhi wa sallam says ma ja'abika ya Umair what brought you here O Umair
29:50he says j'ituli hadhal asiri alladhi fi aydikum I came for this prisoner that is with you so show the excellence that we know of you the nobility that we know of you in regards to the prisoner my son is one of your captives
30:04the Prophet sallAllahu alayhi wa sallam said fama balus saif fi'unuqiq what's up with the sword on your neck then and look what he says subhanAllah he says abbahaha Allah min suyoof he said may Allah destroy these swords
30:18what good he says hal aghnat a'ni shay'a did it do any good for me on the day of Badr you know if you thought this sword was going to be effective clearly these swords meant nothing to us on the day of Badr so he said you know
30:32basically you know whatever with the swords you know what is it that these swords do for us anyway clearly there are forces that are greater than us and the sword was not able to do me any good on the day of Badr
30:46the Prophet sallAllahu alayhi wa sallam said ustuqni he said tell me the truth malladhi j'ita lahum why are you here so he says majit tu illa dhi dak that's all I came for ya Rasulullah I just came because I want to free my son
31:00the Prophet sallAllahu alayhi wa sallam said ustuqni tell me the truth why are you here he said all I came was for my son the Prophet sallAllahu alayhi wa sallam then says to him bal qa'ata anta wa safwan ibn umayya fil hijr
31:15rather you and safwan were sitting in the hijr by the way subhanAllah it's profound when you think about this conversation of plotting the assassination of the Prophet sallAllahu alayhi wa sallam took place in the hijr of Ismail alayhi wa sallam where Allah azawajal
31:29saves Ismail the ancestor of the Prophet sallAllahu alayhi wa sallam and these two men plotted the murder of the Prophet sallAllahu alayhi wa sallam from that place so the Prophet sallAllahu alayhi wa sallam is saying you and Safwan were sitting in the hijr fa dhakartu ma ashab al qaleeb
31:43ibn Quraysh and then you started to talk about ashab al qaleeb the people who were killed from Quraysh thumma qulta and then you said to him law la daynun alayya wa ayalun indi la kharajtu hatta
31:57aqtul muhammada if I didn't have these debts in my family I would have gone out and killed Muhammad sallAllahu alayhi wa sallam and then Safwan said to you that don't worry about your debts I will take care of your debts and don't worry about your family I will take care of your family
32:11so the Prophet sallAllahu alayhi wa sallam recounted to him word for word the conversation and there was no way that anyone heard that conversation and even if someone would have heard that conversation to get it in time to the Prophet sallAllahu alayhi wa sallam with that precision
32:25is absolutely impossible so Umayyad is watching the Prophet sallAllahu alayhi wa sallam uncover the entire plot to him and then once the Prophet sallAllahu alayhi wa sallam
32:40finishes saying that to him he says ashhadu annaka rasool Allah I bear witness that you are the messenger of Allah I have nothing left to say ashhadu annaka rasool Allah you are the messenger of Allah
32:54and he says that we were ya rasool Allah speaking exactly as you said and there is no way there is no way that you could have known what we spoke about
33:08unless there was something coming to you in khabar as-sama unless there was something descending upon you from the heavens and he says wahadha amrun lam yahdurhu illa ana wa safwan he said this is a conversation
33:22that no one was present in except me and Safwan and he says fawallahi inni laa'alamu maa ataaka bihi illa Allah he said so now I know for sure that no one brought this to you except Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala
33:36so he said so with that ya rasool Allah alhamdulillah all praises to Allah who guided me to you and who brought me on this path and then he took the shahadah as the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam entrusted him
33:50to now of course Umar radiallahu ta'ala anhu goes from wanting to snap the guy's head to embracing him and saying allahu akbar and welcome to Islam and the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam says faqihu akhakum fi dinihi wa allimuhu al quran
34:05go teach your brother some of this religion and teach him the Quran give him some understanding of the religion teach him his basics of Islam now and teach him the Quran wa atliku asirahu
34:19and give him back his prisoner meaning give him back his son so Umair now is the new Muslim in Medina alright he is a Buddhist in many ways subhanallah he woke up amongst the dead in Badr
34:33literally woke up in the pile of dead on Badr and now is taking shahadah in Medina with the Muslims and the Ansar are teaching him how to make wudu how to pray how to do the basics and they're teaching him some of the surahs
34:47of the Quran his son is freed from captivity his son embraces Islam as well so Wahab Ibn Umair Ibn Wahab is also a Muslim and a companion and Umar radiyaAllahu ta'ala said about Umair
35:01subhanallah you think about how the plot twist here Umar was once that guy that walked in and Hamza radiyaAllahu ta'ala grabbed him and told him to stop and then Umar radiyaAllahu ta'ala became Muslim and suddenly he is the celebrated new Muslim
35:15Umar said about Umair he says that wallahi a khanzeer a pig I loved a pig I would have loved a pig more than I loved Umair I hated that man he said and now huwa ahabbu ilayya
35:30min awladi now he is more beloved to me than my own children so in that moment of him embracing Islam he went from being the enemy of Allah al kalb the dog less than a pig to being more beloved to me than my children
35:44so suddenly in Medina now you have Umar and Umair Ibn Wahab as companions of each other and Umair Ibn Wahab learning the Quran and studying Islam in the masjid of the prophet the story continues and it has many dimensions
35:58comes to the prophet and he says ya rasulullah inni kuntu jahidan ala itfai nurillah I used to strive to extinguish the light of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala
36:12because the assumption is what now that I became Muslim I stay in Medina there is no need for him to go back to Mecca it is dangerous for him to go back to Mecca but he says to the prophet I used to fight against the religion of Allah
36:27and I was involved in trying to extinguish the light of Allah and he says shadeed al adha liman kana ala deenillah and I used to harass severely anyone that was on the religion of Allah
36:41and he says ya rasulullah let me go back to Mecca let me go back to Mecca fa ad'uuhum ila Allahi wa ila rasulihi wa ila al Islam let me go back to Mecca even in this climate subhanAllah
36:55think about how boiling with anger Mecca is now this is between Badr and Uhud there is no hotter time in Mecca of anger towards the Muslims ya rasulullah give me a chance let me go back to them call them to Allah
37:09call them to you call them to Islam la'allallah yahdihim it may be that Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala will guide them and he says if Allah does not guide them I used to harass them the way that I used to harass those from your companions upon
37:23your religion so the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam gave him permission to go back to Mecca and to call them to Islam which is very dangerous but the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam clearly knows what he is doing
37:37and he knows Umayyad is standing amongst the people of Mecca and that Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala will protect him in this operation subhanAllah while this is happening so Safwan and Umayyad had this conversation and no one knew anything except for Safwan and Umayyad
37:52and they both said to each other that we are not going to tell anyone about this conversation so Safwan is giddy
37:59like holding on to the news and he is just waiting to hear about basically the assassination of the Prophet ﷺ and so he is walking past people in Mecca and he says to them
38:12أَبْشِرُوا بِوَقَعَةٍ تَأْتِيكُمُ الْآنَ فِي أَيَّامٍ don't worry good news is about to come to you within the next few days تُنسِيكُمْ وَقَعَةَ بَدْرٍ and it is going to make you forget all of the horror of Badr
38:25something great is about to come out of Medina you just wait I can't wait to tell you what's about to happen in Medina and Safwan is kind of getting worried because he is not hearing any news
38:36so Safwan starts to go out to the route and he is asking people that are coming from that direction hey did you hear anything from Medina? did you hear any news? have you heard anything about Muhammad ﷺ?
38:49have you heard anything about Umayyad ibn Wahab? and eventually someone tells him that yeah actually Umayyad became Muslim and Safwan says to him no way there is no way he became Muslim
39:03and the rider tells him he became Muslim and he is on his way back to Mecca as a Muslim so Safwan his entire mood switches he was expecting to hear the news of the death of the Prophet ﷺ at the hands of Umayyad
39:17he just heard that Umayyad became Muslim at the hands of the Prophet ﷺ Umayyad comes back and Safwan looks at him and Safwan knows right away when he sees him that he is a Muslim now and Safwan says to him
39:29Wallahi laa ukalimuka abada I swear I will never speak to you again and I will never do anything for you again and Safwan turns his back on him and goes home in anger
39:41now what Umayyad does is he starts to privately go through some of the family members of his in Mecca and call them to Islam
39:52and Subhanallah in that process he actually gets a significant portion of converts from his tribe and from some of those people in Mecca
40:02so he starts to do da'wah privately and wisely in the midst of that interim period between Badr and Uhud and I want you to imagine the scene of his return
40:14Subhanallah he comes back to Medina and he has this caravan of Muslims so it's the only hijrah that we know of between Badr and Uhud is the hijrah under Umayyad ibn Wahab
40:28with a group of Muslims behind him and he enters into Medina with this caravan of Muslims and he's reading the Quran as he's on the back of his camel and so Subhanallah it's like a sight to see
40:42you know look at the difference between the first time he came here and the second time he came here as a Muslim reading Quran on the back of his camel
40:51introducing another group of Muslims to the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam and Umayyad ibn Wahab RadhiAllahu Ta'ala Anhu goes on to fight on the side of the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam in every battle afterwards
41:05so he fights with the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam in Uhud, in Khandaq and every battle after and Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala allows him to live you know in Al-Medina for the rest of his life RadhiAllahu Ta'ala Anhu
41:18His son Wahab ibn Umair who was captured on the day of Badr becomes a companion and he was instrumental to the conquest of Egypt he was one of those that went with Amr al-As through Gaza
41:30may Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala liberate it and liberate Palestine he was one of those who was chosen by Umar RadhiAllahu Anhu who used to call his dad the dog of Quraysh Umar RadhiAllahu Anhu appointed him as a commander in multiple expeditions
41:43and Wahab ibn Umair RadhiAllahu Ta'ala Anhumah dies as a shaheed in the battle of Amuria in Ashsham so he's actually buried in Ashsham today so Allah Azawajal switched their fate entirely
41:55which shows you that Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala saw something in their hearts that made it worth it now what about Safwan ibn Umayyah
42:03Safwan ibn Umayyah is probably the most stubborn, even more stubborn than Abu Sufyan with the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam and how long it takes him to embrace Islam and that's why I chose to leave him
42:17I was going to talk about him with Khalid and Ikramah and Amr because technically he's their colleague but there's something very unique about him that makes him more like some of those people that we spoke about from Ta'if
42:30so let's talk about now his cousin, his first cousin Safwan ibn Umayyah RadhiAllahu Ta'ala Anhumah so Umair ibn Wahab RadhiAllahu Anhu now is in Medina settled with the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam fighting alongside the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam his cousin is left behind
42:44Safwan, richest man in Mecca, potentially the richest man in Mecca hates the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam with all of his heart extremely stubborn
42:55and he's married to either the daughter or the sister of pretty much every enemy of the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam too so we say someone who's deeply embedded, deeply embedded in this hatred of the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam
43:07so I'll list off some of his wives and there are multiple wives, SubhanAllah one of them Barza bint Mas'ud who's the sister of Irwa ibn Mas'ud RadhiAllahu Anhu Al-Thaqafi from Ta'if the chief of Ta'if who of course became Muslim later on
43:21but his wife, one wife is Barza he's married to the sister of Khalid ibn Al-Walid RadhiAllahu Ta'ala Anhumah his sister named Najia, Najia bint Al-Walid
43:32he's married to the daughter of Abu Sufyan, Umayna not Umayma, Umayna bint Abu Sufyan RadhiAllahu Anhu by the way, all of these women became Muslim eventually so he's married to Barza RadhiAllahu Anhu
43:46Najia, the sister of Khalid Umayna, the daughter of Abu Sufyan and then there are other women that are listed that did also become Muslim at some point a woman by the name of Al-Baghum, Al-Baghum bint Al-Mu'adhal
44:00and Thakhita bint Al-Aswad bin Muttalib so he has deep ties to all of the circles of enmity to the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam as well as being an enemy of the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam himself
44:13all of the equipment of the battles against the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam and the Muslims is coming from Safwan ibn Umayya so Safwan was like a weapons enthusiast
44:25he didn't just have horses and camels he had warehouses like storages of weapons in Mecca and in Ta'if by the way where he stored his shields, he stored his spears, he stored all sorts of swords
44:39so it was often his artillery that was being used against the Muslims in the various battles that would take place he fought against the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam in every single battle
44:51and the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam on the day of Uhud made this dua the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam said Allahumma la'an Aba Sufyan, Allahumma la'an Al-Harith ibn Hisham, Allahumma la'an Safwan ibn Umayya
45:04at some point in Uhud the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam cursed these three men Safwan ibn Umayya, Al-Harith ibn Hisham, and Safwan ibn Umayya and that is also the context that the scholars mentioned for the ayah
45:16laysa laka minal amri shay'un, aw ya'tuba alihim what Allah says in Surah Ali Imran that it is not up to you who Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala will forgive and who Allah will guide
45:26meaning that they are different from the group of people that you cursed in Badr that all died in one ditch those three men, something else is meant to come out of them and all three of them became Muslim at some point
45:40and all three of them, hasuna islamuhum as the Imam of Zahabi Rahimullah says their Islam was good and he says and the best of them was Al-Harith ibn Hisham radiAllahu ta'ala anhu if you remember, if you go back to Ikramah ibn Abi Jahl
45:52the lecture about him, Al-Harith ibn Hisham is also part of that, so he says all three of these men that the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam made dua against on that day ended up becoming Muslim which shows you even with the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam
46:05Allah accepts all of his duas but sometimes there is something better in store so Allah Azawajal will give him something better instead of what the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam says
46:17so Sufwan fights the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam in every battle and him and Umair particularly have a damaged relationship and I couldn't find any primary source to this but Allah knows best if there were some letters that went between them where Umair was trying to call his cousin
46:31this is his first cousin to Islam and Sufwan is absolutely rejecting it but what we do know is that when Khalid ibn Walid just hints that he's thinking about becoming Muslim
46:45and he hints this to Ikramah and he hints this to Sufwan because they're buddies Sufwan says to Khalid he swears by Latim al-Uzza he says if everybody in Quraysh became Muslim
46:59except for one man I would be that one man that wouldn't become Muslim and look at how stubborn he is and how much he hates this message everybody else becomes Muslim I'm going to be the one hold out when it comes to Islam
47:13he said he killed my father, he killed my brother you want me to follow his religion? absolutely not he's blinded by revenge and vengeance and has no interest whatsoever
47:27in even considering the possibility of Islam and he along with Ikramah radiyaAllahu ta'ala anhu tried to stop Khalid radiyaAllahu anhu from leaving Mecca and joining the ranks of the Prophet salallahu alayhi wa sallam before the day of the Fath
47:41before the day of the conquest of Mecca then the day of the conquest of Mecca comes through and on that day if you remember Khalid radiyaAllahu ta'ala anhu was leading one of the battalions of the Prophet salallahu alayhi wa sallam
47:55and he was ambushed by Ikramah and Safwan so Ikramah radiyaAllahu anhu and Safwan radiyaAllahu anhu both ambushed Khalid even though Safwan is his brother-in-law Safwan is married to his sister but they ambushed Khalid
48:09Khalid was able to ward them off he killed 12 of that ambush and those two both fled to Yemen they basically took to the water and tried to get away from the Prophet salallahu alayhi wa sallam
48:22because they knew that the Prophet salallahu alayhi wa sallam had named them for death because they were stubborn in fighting the Prophet salallahu alayhi wa sallam now we followed the journey of Ikramah radiyaAllahu ta'ala anhu already and how Allah brought him back
48:35to the Prophet salallahu alayhi wa sallam but what about Safwan ibn Umayyah radiyaAllahu ta'ala anhu Safwan flees and Umayyah comes to the Prophet salallahu alayhi wa sallam and that's why I said their stories are inseparable
48:49and Umayyah radiyaAllahu ta'ala anhu says Ya Rasulullah give me a chance to go and talk to him let me go find him and let me bring him back to you as a Muslim
49:03the Prophet salallahu alayhi wa sallam says ok you have a chance his wife embraced Islam just like the wife of Ikramah embraced Islam Safwan is on the run so Umayyah said
49:17I know my cousin Ya Rasulullah give me something as a proof that I was sent by you to grant him amnesty if he comes back to you in peace so the Prophet salallahu alayhi wa sallam takes off his cloak
49:31says itfadhal gives it to Umayyah go find your cousin show him the cloak and say he has amnesty from me so subhanAllah exactly as he thought Umayyah radiyaAllahu anhu finds him
49:44about to board a boat to go to Yemen and Umayyah stops him and he says to him that Rasulullah salallahu alayhi wa sallam is calling you back to him he is giving you a chance to be forgiven
49:58and he says you want me to believe that after I just tried to foil I just tried to kill his men and I just fled trying to kill his men you want me to believe that the Prophet salallahu alayhi wa sallam is giving me a chance that Muhammad salallahu alayhi wa sallam is calling me back for amnesty
50:12I don't believe you are trying to trick me Umayyah said the Prophet salallahu alayhi wa sallam is giving you a chance of amnesty and he pulled out the cloak of the Prophet salallahu alayhi wa sallam he says here is his proof you have safety from the Prophet salallahu alayhi wa sallam if you come back to him willingly
50:26so subhan running out of options now to his credit he is not a hypocrite he is not going to fake his Islam he is coming back to the Prophet salallahu alayhi wa sallam as a disbeliever ready to make terms with the Messenger of Allah salallahu alayhi wa sallam
50:40on the basis of the amnesty so he comes to the Prophet salallahu alayhi wa sallam with Umayyah so he comes back with Umayyah and he is on his camel and before the Prophet salallahu alayhi wa sallam can even address him he says
50:54Ya Muhammad calls out to the Prophet salallahu alayhi wa sallam he says and he said it out loud in front of everybody just to basically put the Prophet salallahu alayhi wa sallam on the spot in case he is going to be killed so he says
51:08this man came to me with your cloak and he told me to come to you and that I would be safe he says is this true? the Prophet salallahu alayhi wa sallam said it is true
51:22he says listen I will listen to the message that you have if I like it I will become Muslim but if not give me two months to consider it he is still making terms with the Prophet salallahu alayhi wa sallam like you are lucky you are not dead
51:36you are lucky you have not been killed with everything that is happening in this entire process he says I want two months to consider your message I am not ready to become Muslim yet I need to think about it two months
51:50the Prophet salallahu alayhi wa sallam says come down from your camel he says to him said no by Allah until you give me two months until you give me
52:04what I just asked for the Prophet salallahu alayhi wa sallam says you can have four months you want two months I will give you four months just come down and stop acting
52:18in this standoffish manner and subhanallah the Prophet salallahu alayhi wa sallam is showing him such grace he is surprised by the grace of the Prophet salallahu alayhi wa sallam but remember what he told he said if everyone in Quraish became Muslim
52:32except for one man I am going to be that hold out subhanallah he is staying true to his arrogance and his stubbornness in this case he is not faking his Islam he is saying I am going to be a non-Muslim you gave me four months we are going to operate on the basis of that
52:46he comes down shakes the hand of the Prophet salallahu alayhi wa sallam and he is softening up to the Prophet salallahu alayhi wa sallam but still not Muslim and the other companions are you know
53:00looking at him with such disdain like subhanallah what is it going to take for you to open your eyes and Umar radiallahu anhu himself Umar said I wanted to pounce on him I wanted to tear the guy up I mean what are you doing setting these terms
53:14and acting this way until this moment and he said until the Prophet salallahu alayhi wa sallam said to him mathali wa mathalukum kama qala yusufu li ikhwatihi la tathriba alikumul yawm yaghfirullahu lakum he said my example to you is like Yusuf alayhi salam to his brothers
53:28when he said to his brothers there is no blame upon you today may Allah forgive you and that was it now subhanallah a point that the ulama mention and this is going down a fiqh tangent
53:42if the brothers can come up by the way can the brothers come up and make space inshallah just move up as much as you can to make space for those that have come in inshallah just stay here inshallah that's good inshallah so an important point
53:56with with safan that the ulama mention is that the Prophet salallahu alayhi wa sallam lam yufarriq rasulullahi salallahu alayhi wa sallam baynahu wa bayna muratihi that the Prophet salallahu alayhi wa sallam did not separate him from his wife
54:10which led some ulama to you know see that the Prophet was the Prophet salallahu alayhi wa sallam treating him differently because his wife was a Muslim did the Prophet salallahu alayhi wa sallam know that he was about to become Muslim is there a iddah of sorts for a woman when she becomes Muslim
54:24and her husband is not yet Muslim so this gives you a little bit of context as to you know where this comes from in the books of fiqh the Prophet salallahu alayhi wa sallam's treatment of Safwan ibn Umayyah Safwan came back to his wife Safwan was with the Muslims and this story gets more peculiar
54:38Safwan went out to fight alongside the Prophet salallahu alayhi wa sallam and Hunayn and Ta'if as a kafir as a disbeliever he didn't become Muslim everybody else is going jihad in fi sabirillah
54:52he's like nope, I have terms with the Prophet salallahu alayhi wa sallam but I'm fighting as an ally of the Prophet salallahu alayhi wa sallam as someone who has an oath with the Prophet salallahu alayhi wa sallam not as a Muslim so he's fighting the Hawazin fighting in Hunayn
55:06and fighting in Ta'if without taking shahada and the Prophet salallahu alayhi wa sallam says to him you know would you loan some of your armor
55:20for what is to come with the Hawazin with Hunayn and he had a warehouse as I said where he had all these armors and shields so he said to the Prophet salallahu alayhi wa sallam are you forcing me to or are you requesting it
55:34I mean this is the nature of this conversation the Prophet salallahu alayhi wa sallam says rather voluntarily I'm not forcing you it's voluntarily he said that we will return everything back to you in its shape
55:48so you loan us the shields you loan us the armor and then we'll return it back to you in its shape so they went out he fought alongside the Prophet salallahu alayhi wa sallam in Hunayn and in Ta'if
56:02not as a Muslim and his wife was a Muslim and then after Hunayn he's looking at all the spoils of war and he wasn't Muslim to this point
56:16the Prophet salallahu alayhi wa sallam says to me he's saying this he says that the Prophet salallahu alayhi wa sallam said to me do you like all that stuff so Sufyan said I said yes
56:30the Prophet salallahu alayhi wa sallam said it's all for you so he gave him a hundred camels and then he said you want more he said sure he gave him another hundred camels
56:44so do you want more sure he gave him three hundred camels Sufyan is looking at him like what is going on here and he says no one's heart and soul is just so given like no one's heart and soul is just so given
56:58like no one's heart and soul is just so given like no one's heart and soul is just so given like no one's heart and soul is just so given like no one's heart and soul is just so given like no one's heart and soul is just so given
56:59like no one's heart and soul is just so given like no one's heart and soul is just so given like no one's heart and soul is just so given like no one's heart and soul is just so given like no one's heart and soul is just so given like no one's heart and soul is just so given like no one's heart and soul is just so given like no one's heart and soul is just so given like no one's heart and soul is just so given like no one's heart and soul is just so given like no one's heart and soul is just so given like no one's heart and soul is just so given like no one's heart and soul is just so given like no one's heart and soul is just so given like no one's heart and soul is just so given like no one's heart and soul is just so given like no one's heart and soul is just so given like no one's heart and soul is just so given like no one's heart and soul is just so given like no one's heart and soul is just so given
57:29Mark and he says about the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam that
57:35he said the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam gave me all of that and he was the most hated
57:50man on the planet to me meaning I still hated him I was fighting alongside him because that was my most politically convenient you know thing to do to fight alongside him as a disbeliever
57:59but he kept on giving me until he became the most beloved person to me Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam then after that the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam told me he said Sufwan said we lost some of your shields
58:12in battle so some of the shields are gone so the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam said to him
58:18do we have to pay you back for it and he said no ya Rasulullah he says what was in my heart that day is not in my heart today
58:29I'm not the same person that I was when you when you asked me to borrow those shields now SubhanAllah I mentioned all of this to say what now let that be the context of that conversation of the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam
58:42with the Ansar where the Ansar were wondering how is it that the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam is giving people like that all of this
58:51and we're left behind and what that signal to them and ask yourself why it would pinch why it would hurt to be watching the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam do that and how the shaitan could play with your mind
59:04to say that the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam is doing this and he's doing that and he's doing this and this isn't principled and things of that sort and then let that be the context think of Sufwan Ibn Umayyah radiAllahu ta'ala anhu let that be the context
59:16for that conversation when the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam is saying look these people they're weak at heart they needed something aren't you pleased that they go back and they have the camels and they have the wealth and you go back and you have Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam with you
59:30that's the context of these conversations and SubhanAllah I know we're out of time and so I'll just summarize so what then comes to be of Sufwan Ibn Umayyah radiAllahu ta'ala anhu when his heart opens to Islam like Umayyah Ibn Wahab
59:42he's a completely changed man he hears someone say that whoever does not make hijrah halak innahu man lam yuhajir halak whoever does not make hijrah will perish
59:55so he goes to al-madinah al-munawwara fanaama fil masjid and he sleeps in the masjid and he just spreads out his rida he just spreads out a cloak and he starts sleeping in the masjid of the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam
01:00:07it's a very interesting narration someone stole his cloak while he was sleeping
01:00:12all right so he goes to the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam he catches the man who stole his cloak and he goes to the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam and he says this person stole my cloak
01:00:25and so the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam amr abul hadd the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam commanded the penalty and then Sufwan said no ya Rasulullah it's sadaqa it's a charity for me and the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam said you should have said that in the first place but okay
01:00:37you know he stole I mean Sufwan had a cloak right Sufwan was a very rich man radiAllahu ta'ala anhu with that being said he came to the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam
01:00:47and he was worried about missing out on the hijrah now like I held out to the very end with the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam and that's where the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam said la hijrah ba'da fathi makkah
01:00:57walakin jihadun waniyah fa'itha so the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam said there is no hijrah after the fatih but there is only jihad there is only striving in the path of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala and the intention
01:01:10so he says if you are called to it fanfiru then answer the call and Sufwan radiAllahu ta'ala anhu never missed a battle in the path of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala until the end of his life
01:01:23radiAllahu ta'ala anhu in accordance with that he also became known for his extreme generosity in the Medina Munawwara they said that anyone that was looking any miskeen that was looking for food they knew that they could go to the house of Sufwan
01:01:35in Mecca or Medina and he would give radiAllahu ta'ala anhu and he had many children subhanAllah I'll just mention that two of his kids Abdullah and Abdurrahman so he acted upon the hadith of the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam
01:01:46that the most beloved of names to Allah are Abdullah and Abdurrahman so he named two sons Abdullah and Abdurrahman
01:01:52both of these two who were his sons were actually killed alongside Abdullah ibn Zubayr radiAllahu ta'ala anhum
01:02:01next to the Kaaba when he was executed next to the Kaaba they were executed alongside Abdullah ibn Zubayr
01:02:07so they were two of those who did not flee the side of Abdullah ibn Zubayr when most people had fled from him radiAllahu ta'ala anhum we ask Allah subhanAllah to be pleased with the companions of the Messenger of Allah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam
01:02:20to send his peace and blessings upon our beloved Messenger Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam and to allow us to be sources and vehicles by which people are guided to the way of Allah and the Messenger Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam Allahumma ameen barakAllahu feekum inshAllah ta'ala we'll continue next week
