Rafi’ (ra) and Rifa’a (ra): Healed With the Prophet’s ﷺ Saliva | The Firsts
Before the Prophet ﷺ ever reached Medina, the Qur’an had already arrived there. Rafi’ ibn Malik (ra), one of six men from Yathrib who accepted Islam at Hajj, could read and write. The Prophet ﷺ gave him the written portions revealed up to Surah Yusuf, and his tribe, Banu Zurayq, became the first in Medina to hear the Qur’an recited in its masjid. He was killed at Uhud.
His son Rifa’a ibn Rafi’ (ra) fought at Badr, where an arrow struck his eye and the Prophet ﷺ healed it. His mother was the sister of ʿAbdullah ibn Ubayy, the leader of the hypocrites. Rifa’a went on to narrate the hadith of Jibril (as) on the rank of those who fought at Badr, and two well-known hadith about prayer: one about a man told three times to go back and pray, and one about a man whose words in prayer the angels raced to record.
