By praising Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala and bearing witness that none has the right to be worshipped or unconditionally obeyed except for him. We bear witness that Muhammad sallallahu alayhi wasallam is his final messenger. We ask Allah to send his peace and blessings upon him, the prophets that came before him, his family and companions that served alongside him and those that follow in their blessed path until the day of judgment. And we ask Allah to make us amongst them. Allahumma ameen. Dear brothers and sisters, if any one of you has ever been through the experience of having someone beloved to you go through a prolonged disease, may Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala reward all of you who did khidmah, who served your parents or your spouses or your children or your loved ones during difficult times. You come to find that people learn about sicknesses as if they themselves have become scientists or doctors because of the love that they have for the person that is undergoing an affliction. When my mother, may Allah have mercy on her, was going through cancer, I marvel at how much my father learned about cancer. To actually learn about the intricacies that only a medical doctor should know. When I see a person who has children that undergo long diseases, sometimes very rare diseases, you marvel subhanAllah and you think no one should have to know that much about that particular disease, but it's the love that they have for their children. And I was reflecting on an incident between Urwa ibn Zubayr radiyaAllahu ta'ala anhu and Aisha, Ummul Mu'mineen radiyaAllahu ta'ala anha. Urwa, who was the nephew of Aisha radiyaAllahu ta'ala anha, and he used to gather the seerah from her. So much of the seerah that we have of the Prophet salAllahu alayhi wa sallam, the biography that we have of the Messenger of Allah salAllahu alayhi wa sallam, is
transmitted through this beautiful relationship between a nephew and an aunt. Between Urwa radiyaAllahu ta'ala anhu, whose mother was Asmaa bint Abi Bakr radiyaAllahu ta'ala anha wa an abiha, and he's speaking to his aunt, may Allah be pleased with her, and gathering the most intimate moments of the life of the Prophet salAllahu alayhi wa sallam, so that we can learn about him, salAllahu alayhi wa sallam, so we can know about who he was away from the community, who he was behind closed doors. Wa kana khuluquhul quran. His character was the Quran, salAllahu alayhi wa sallam. He was a living manifestation of every word that he preached, salAllahu alayhi wa sallam. And Urwa says that I was speaking to Aisha radiyaAllahu ta'ala anha, and I was marveling at her ilm, her knowledge. Ya khalati, oh my aunt, how is it that you know so much Quran, poetry, lineage? Aisha radiyaAllahu ta'ala anha knew inheritance. Abu Musa al-Ashari radiyaAllahu ta'ala anhu said when we had difficulty with the question of inheritance, we'd go to Aisha radiyaAllahu ta'ala anha and she could process it like no one else. You have all of this knowledge of so many different things, and then he says to her, how is it that you know so much about medicine? How is it that you're like a doctor? You have all this ilm about medicine, all this knowledge about medicine. So she put her hand on his shoulder, the shoulder of her nephew Urwa, and she said to him, oh son of my sister, don't you know that when the messenger of Allah, salAllahu alayhi wa sallam, was sick, I used to listen in on every single conversation about the messenger of Allah, salAllahu alayhi wa sallam, and his illness. I would speak to the people, I would be consulted, and I would consult. She was going out there looking for solutions to try to identify the sickness of the prophet, salAllahu alayhi wa sallam.
What's wrong with the messenger of Allah, salAllahu alayhi wa sallam? How is it that we can cure him? And she listened in on every single conversation, every person who came in, radiAllahu ta'ala anha, out of her love for the messenger of Allah, salAllahu alayhi wa sallam, and ultimately, subhanAllah, she would have the blessing of the prophet, salAllahu alayhi wa sallam, last moments being in her lap, sharing a siwak with her, a toothbrush, radiAllahu ta'ala anha, holding him literally, alayhi salatu was salam, when Jibreel, alayhi salam, came to him to take his soul. SubhanAllah, when Jibreel came to him the first time, the prophet, salAllahu alayhi wa sallam, went to the arms of Khadija, radiAllahu ta'ala anha. And the last time in this world, he was in the arms of Aisha, radiAllahu ta'ala anha. And she saw him asking for a rafiq al-a'la, for the highest companionship. And she said, I knew medicine because of my love for the messenger of Allah, salAllahu alayhi wa sallam. And as we're sitting with ourselves and we're thinking about what is it that we can be doing to connect to Allah and his messenger, salAllahu alayhi wa sallam, through some of these difficult times, through the times that we're holed up in the house. We know what tadabbur upon the Quran looks like, reflecting upon the Quran looks like, listening to the verses of the Quran, understanding the tafsir of the Quran, connecting verses of the Quran to our lives. We know what that looks like. We know what it means to connect to Allah, subhanAllah ta'ala, wa lillahi al-asma' al-husna, fad'uhu biha. To Allah belong the most beautiful of names, you call upon Allah, subhanAllah ta'ala, you make dua. You supplicate to him with his beautiful names and his attributes. And you know Allah, subhanAllah ta'ala, through reflecting upon his revelation. And then through reflecting upon his creation, you come closer to the creator through knowing the creation. But what about Rasulullah, salAllahu alayhi wa sallam? What does it mean to do tadabbur with the seerah of the prophet, salAllahu alayhi wa sallam? To reflect with the seerah of the prophet, salAllahu alayhi wa sallam?
It's not to just listen to a lecture on seerah so that you can learn some details. It's not just to go through the battles alone so that you can learn about how the Muslims lost, and then won, and then went through a difficulty in Uhud, and the difficulties of the trench, and then the victory of al-Fatih, to make ourselves feel better about the fact, and I say the fact, that the nusrah of Allah, subhanAllah ta'ala, is always near. That the victory from Allah is always near. That's not the only purpose, but on a deeply individual level, to read about the prophet, salAllahu alayhi wa sallam, to listen to lectures about the prophet, salAllahu alayhi wa sallam, and then to try to connect. You know, depending on what state you are in life, Uhud might hit you a little differently. Ta'if might hit you a little differently. Him burying his child might hit you a little differently. The conflict, the arguments that he had with his spouses might hit you a little differently. All of these different phases of his life, subhanAllah, being overwhelmed by the community, might hit you differently. The slander of Aisha radiAllahu anha, hadithatul ifq, it might hit you in a certain way. But that takes a deep sitting with the prophet, salAllahu alayhi wa sallam, and every time you sit with the seerah of the prophet, salAllahu alayhi wa sallam, you fall in love with him all over again, alayhi salatu wassalam. The more you know him, the more that you love him, you become more attached to him, and you internalize. The prophet, salAllahu alayhi wa sallam, was uswatun hasana. Was the most blessed example for those that seek Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala and the day of judgment. He is uswatun hasana, a beautiful example for us. Not just to take theology, but to take spirituality, to take our own individual stories, and to read our stories into his story. And the prophet, salAllahu alayhi wa sallam, sets the greatest example,
whether in pleasure or in pain, whether in prosperity or adversity, whether in poverty or prosperity. The prophet, salAllahu alayhi wa sallam, always sets the most beautiful example. And so it's a very simple message. They would learn the seerah of the prophet, salAllahu alayhi wa sallam, the way that they would learn the Quran. I want to encourage everyone to cut out some time from your week, to do tadabbur with the seerah, to reflect with the seerah of the prophet, salAllahu alayhi wa sallam, even if it's an hour of the week, and to actually be intentional about sitting with yourself and saying, how does this connect to me? May Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala connect us to our beloved one, salAllahu alayhi wa sallam. May Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala allow us to manifest his sunnah in our own lives, and may Allah gather us with him, alayhi salatu was salam, in Jannatul Firdaus. Allahuma Ameen. Allahuma Ameen.
Allahuma Ameen. Allahuma Ameen.
