We begin by praising Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala and bearing witness that none has the right to be worshipped or unconditionally obeyed except for Him. We bear witness that Muhammad sallallahu alayhi wa sallam is His final messenger. We ask Allah to send His peace and blessings upon him, the prophets and messengers that came before him, his family and companions that served alongside him and those that follow in his blessed path until the Day of Judgment. And we ask Allah to make us amongst them. Allahumma ameen. Dear brothers and sisters, we are in the midst of the most blessed of days and it's also very hot outside. And so insha'Allah ta'ala with these very few moments that we have as we are immersing ourselves in these blessings from Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala, a day in which more people are freed from the fire than any other day. May Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala right us from amongst them. Allahumma ameen. A day in which cumulatively hundreds and thousands of years just in this masjid alone of sins will be forgiven by the time sunset comes. A day in which the ummah calls upon Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala like no other day. I wanted to simply give you a scene. And one of the prominent features of this hajj for those that are there in hajj is that they don't have their imams, they don't have their mashayikh, they don't have their guides. In some case they don't have their hotel rooms, they don't have their tents. They're struggling. May Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala accept their struggles and accept their hajj. Allahumma ameen. But one of the things if you've been to hajj that you recognize is the importance of having someone to take you along, to give you advice, to get you prepared for the next step. And of course in hajjatul wada' the moment with the Prophet salallahu alayhi wasalam, you have Rasulullah salallahu alayhi wasalam himself giving you directions, pointing you to the next step, explaining to you what you were to do and you could follow along the way with what he said and what he did salallahu alayhi wasalam. And he left us with the timeless advice of la ilaha illallah wahdahu la sharika lah, lahul mulk wa lahul hamd, wa huwa ala kulli shay'in qadeer.
That you say throughout the day, there is no God but Allah. He is alone, he has no partner. To him belongs all dominion. To him belongs all praise and he has power over all things. The Prophet salallahu alayhi wasalam said that this was the dua of the prophets on Arafah. And so if you could think of the Prophet salallahu alayhi wasalam and Ibrahim alayhi wasalam and Musa alayhi wasalam and Isa alayhi wasalam and the prophets of Allah, this was the dua that they would make throughout the day. But what did I want to do as I was thinking about a hajj without guides? I want to put you in a situation in which you can capture inshallah ta'ala a few glimpses of the sahaba of the Prophet salallahu alayhi wasalam, the companions and their various personal duas. If you were going around and you were taking guidance from various companions and to preface this, I'm not suggesting that the following narrations took place in the same year, but just some of the glimpses, the few glimpses we have of the companions of the Messenger salallahu alayhi wasalam on that blessed day. And there are three incidents. I want you to imagine that you have arrived at the plain of Arafah and you are looking around and when you look right and left, you see the companions of the Prophet salallahu alayhi wasalam and their children. And you see them all gauging themselves and preparing themselves for the greatest day of the year. And on that day comes one of the most wealthy companions of the Prophet salallahu alayhi wasalam and his nephew-in-law, the nephew of Khadijah radiyaAllahu ta'ala anha, Hakim bin Hizam radiyaAllahu ta'ala anhu. And Hakim bin Hizam, the nephew of Khadijah, was an extremely wealthy man. In fact, someone who the Prophet salallahu alayhi wasalam warned not to get attached to his wealth. And the Sahaba described the scene and the Tabi'een described the scene that on the day of Arafah he comes and as he comes forward, Hakim bin Hizam,
he would bring forth a hundred people that were enslaved. And he would bring forth a hundred camels and he would bring forth a hundred sheep. And he would say, Oh my Lord, هذا كله لك, all of this is for you. And he would set free a hundred people from captivity, a hundred people that were enslaved. And then he would order for the camels and for the sheep to be sacrificed on the day of the sacrifice. And as he did that, as you saw this man coming forward, and the Prophet salallahu alayhi wasalam said that whoever frees a person from slavery, that Allah will free every single part of his body from the fire. The people are watching him and everyone breaks down into tears. And they call out to Allah in their buka and their crying. Oh Allah, this is a slave like all of us. And he has freed other slaves. And we are all your slaves, oh Allah, so free us from the fire, free us from the punishment. As you move over, you see Sayyidina Ali ibn Abi Talib radiyallahu ta'ala anhum, who was narrated by ibn Abi Dunya that he was going around and he was telling the people how to get ready for the day of Arafah and preparing them for the day of Arafah. And he said to them, radiyallahu ta'ala anhum, There is not a day of the year, except that on that day Allah frees certain people from the fire. Every day, from the mercy of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala, every single day of the year, Allah frees someone from the fire, someone is forgiven. And that's why it's important for us to not become seasonal Muslims. Because we don't want Allah's forgiveness to be seasonal. We want His mercy and we know that His mercy is extra in certain days and His mercy is always extra.
But you don't want to be a seasonal Muslim, someone who only makes tawbah, says, well, I missed it this Ramadan, I missed it this Arafah. Every single day is an opportunity. So he said, listen, every single day Allah frees certain people from the fire. But he said, after he said that, he said, But there is not a day in the year that Allah frees more people from the fire than the day of Arafah. So there is not a day of the year except that Allah frees some people from the fire. But there is not a day of the year in which Allah frees more people from the fire than the day of Arafah. Now it's gonna be hard for you to memorize the duas and that won't be the point. You can go back and listen to it inshaAllah. Let's listen to the khutbah and memorize these few duas but at least the spirit of it. He said, spend the day saying, Oh Allah, free my neck from the fire. Spend the day asking Allah, Oh Allah, free my neck from the fire. And expand for me, bestow upon me permissible sustenance. Make plentiful for me permissible sustenance so that I don't resort to the haram. And keep away from me the wicked of jinn and mankind. And he said, فَإِنَّهُ عَامَتُ مَا أَدْعُو بِهِ الْيَوْمِ And he's telling the people, this is the general way in which I make dua today. You know, there was a certain like aura, like let me memorize the words, let me get the exact script. If I could write down the whole day of the dua of the Prophet ﷺ, certainly I would.
If I could get all of the duas of Abu Bakr and Umar and Uthman and Ali, certainly I would. But he's saying, look, this is generally what I'm making dua for. So build off of the structure. What are you asking Allah for? You're asking Allah ﷻ for freedom from the fire. You're asking Allah ﷻ for al-jannah by default. You're asking Allah ﷻ for freedom from prohibited means of income. And you're asking Allah ﷻ to protect you from the evil of jinn and man. Then you have Ibn Umar, wadiyAllahu ta'ala, anhumah. And you look over and you see the man who was described as being the closest adherent to the way of the Prophet ﷺ, Abdullah ibn Umar, wadiyAllahu ta'ala, anhumah. And it was narrated that Abdullah ibn Umar, wadiyAllahu ta'ala, anhumah, has his hands extended. And he was saying on the day of Arafah over and over and over again, Allahu akbar wa lillahi al-hamd. These are days of takbir too, by the way, not just tomorrow. Allahu akbar wa lillahi al-hamd. God is great and to Him belongs all praise. Wahuwa ala kulli shay'in qadeer. And he would repeat the du'a that the Prophet ﷺ taught us to repeat throughout the day about the oneness of Allah ﷻ and renewing that covenant with Allah. And then he would say, Allahumma ahdini bilhuda, waqini bil taqwa, waghfir li fil aakhirati wal ula. Allahumma, Allahumma ahdini bilhuda. O Allah, guide me with your guidance. Waqini bil taqwa. And protect me with your taqwa. Protect me with the blessing of taqwa, of God consciousness. Waghfir li fil aakhirati wal ula.
And forgive me in this life and in the hereafter. And he said, the narrator say that he would do this and then he would go quiet. This is very interesting. He'd go quiet for the time that it would take to recite Surat al-Fatiha. Meaning he'd make some personal du'as that you couldn't hear. And then he'd say the same thing again. Wahuwa ala kulli shay'in qadeer. Allahumma ahdini bilhuda, waqini bil taqwa, waghfir li fil aakhirati wal ula. And then finally, dear brothers and sisters, the most powerful scene, subhanAllah, that you find. Abdullah ibn Mubarak, rahimahullah ta'ala, he said that, I came to Sufyan al-Thawri, jittu ila Sufyan, ashiyat Arafah. I came to him on the evening of Arafah. Wahuwa jathin ala rukbatayhi wa'inahu tahmilan. And he was on his knees, weeping. His eyes were just flowing. This was the end of Arafah and this was a man that had exerted himself. And if you've ever been to Arafah, you know those last moments are the most emotional ones. May Allah write it down for us. Allahumma ameen. And he said, so I looked at him and I started to cry. And he turned around and he saw me weeping for his weeping. And I said to him, Ya Sufyan, man aswa'u hadhal jam'i haala? O Sufyan, who is the person amongst us who is in the worst state today? And he said, alladhi yadunnu anna Allaha laa yaghfiru lahum. The person who thinks that Allah won't forgive them. The person who's in the worst state is the person that does not have a good opinion of their Lord. That does not believe that their Lord will forgive them. We call upon our Lord with confidence. Just like we did on the last 10 nights of Ramadan.
That when we call upon Allah Subhanahu wa ta'ala, muqinoona bil-ijabah. With complete certainty in our du'as. And we say, O Allah forgive us. Allahumma a'tiq riqabana minan-nar. O Allah forgive us and protect us from the fire. We ask Allah Subhanahu wa ta'ala to let that be the case for each and every single Muslim that is calling upon him today. Allahumma ameen. Wa salallahu wa sallam wa baraka wa ala nabiyyina Muhammad wa ala alihi wa sahbihi ajma'een. Alhamdulillah wa salatu was salamu ala rasulillah wa ala alihi wa sahbihi wa man wala. Allahu Akbar Allahu Akbar Allahu Akbar la ilaha illa Allah. Allahumma a'tiq riqabana minan-nar. Wa a'fu anna wa khfir lana wa arhamna. Anta mawlana fan surna ala alqawm alkafirin. Allah ya'mur bil adli wal ihsan wa ita'i lil qurba wa yanha' alan alfahsha'i wal munkari wal baghi. Ya'idukum la'allakum tathakkaroon. Fathkuru Allahi yathkurukum wa shkuruhu alani'maa yizid lakum. Wala dhikru Allahi akbar. Wallahi ya'nul ma tasna'oon.
