Do You Doubt the Return? | Khutbah

December 31, 2023Dr. Omar Suleiman

As Israel sets its sights on escalating its ethnic cleansing project, some are asking when will we return to Palestine? Is it even possible? We look at a very specific episode from the Seerah where Allah promised the Prophet ﷺ a return to Makkah, and how the verses in Surah Rum, Al-Israa, and Al-Qasass relate to our situation today.

We begin as always by praising Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala and bearing witness that none has the right to be worshipped or unconditionally obeyed except for Him. And we bear witness that Muhammad sallallahu alayhi wa sallam is His final messenger. We ask Allah to send His peace and blessings upon him, the prophets and messengers that came before him, his family and companions that served alongside him, and those that follow in his blessed path until the day of judgment. And we ask Allah to make us amongst them. Allahumma ameen. Dear brothers and sisters, I want you to put yourself in the shoes of a person who is leaving their land in Palestine, who is leaving their land in Gaza. The many people that have been expelled over the years and what has kept them is nothing but their faith in Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala, their certainty in Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala, and the motto of every single generation of people that have been expelled is that we will return. Before it was sana'ud, we will return. And today it is waj'een, we are all returning. The mottos of the intifadas, the mottos of the people who have been expelled, the mottos of those who love the people that have been expelled and love the land from which they were expelled, continue to revolve around this concept of we will return. And when we say we will return, we have full faith not in our strategic ability, not in our military power, not in our organizing, but in Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala who always returns his prophets to their rightful places, who always balances out the scale once again, who always makes an example out of every oppressor that thinks they will be immune to the justice of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala,
who always uplifts the oppressed just when the oppressed is about to break. We put our faith in him that we will return. And right now in Ghazna to Hashim, our beloved Ghazna, the place of the ancestor of our beloved prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam Hashim, where the best of the ummah of Muhammad sallallahu alayhi wa sallam is today, there are people that are at the border of Rafah that have to make a powerful choice. There are some who will be expelled and pushed out. And they'll turn back and they'll look towards Ghazna the way that perhaps their parents did before or the way they may have done when they were expelled from other places in Palestine to Ghazna in the first place. And they'll look back at it and in their hearts they will cry that I would have never left you, had your people or had they not expelled me. And in those same words, our beloved master sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, when he was expelled from Mecca, he turns around and he says with a grieving heart and with his eyes filled with tears, Ya Mecca, O Mecca, Wallahi innaki la khayru ardi Allah. I swear by Allah that you are the best of Allah's lands. Wa ahabbu ardi Allahi ilayya aw ila Allah. You are the most beloved of land to me and you're the most beloved of land to Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala. Walaw ma anni ufrijtu minki ma farajt. Had I not been expelled from you, then I would have never left you. And the last verse that some of the mufassareen say is revealed to the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam is a powerful one that applies to the situation that we are in today.
Our beloved Abbas radiallahu ta'ala said, that as the beloved messenger sallallahu alayhi wa sallam was on his way out of Mecca and he's staying with his wife, the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam gets to the place called al-du'fa which is a valley from which you have your last view of Mecca. And he looks at it and the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam is grieved. And imagine the last verse that comes to the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam that some of the scholars say the only verse revealed on the hijwa at the ansar is when Jibreel alayhi sallam comes to the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam with the verse that's called al-qasas where Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala says and Jibreel alayhi sallam reveals to him inna allathee farra alayka al-qur'ana la'aduka ila ma'ad Verily, the one who revealed the Qur'an upon you, who made the Qur'an binding upon you, will return you home. Subhanallah. Look at the language. The one who has revealed the Qur'an to you, the same one that spoke to you from above seven heavens and transcended all of the layers of existence for the Qur'an to reach your heart. He will surely take you, Ya Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, body, heart and soul. And he will return me back to the rightful place. And the ulama say, subhanallah, the word ma'ad here could refer to Mecca or it could refer to paradise. In any case, Allah will return you. It is either victory or shahada. It is either victory or martyrdom.
Those who are expelled from Mecca like Hamza radhiallahu ta'ala anhum but never get to come back to Mecca will be taken through the gates of the heavens instead and to their place in paradise. But you, Ya Rasulullah and your ummah will certainly return back just as you have certainty that the Qur'an is being revealed just as you, O Muslim, know that Allah spoke to the heart of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam to appear and reveal this Qur'an. Know that Allah will return you home and Allah will put you back in your place. Subhanallah. The messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam is just trying to survive a death right now. He's just trying to flee with his life. No one is even thinking about the power dynamics of Mecca coming back to the Muslim. It's how do we escape the thirst for murder that the various tribes of Quraysh now have to murder the best of their sons. How do we get out of what they have put forth? And Allah is already telling the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam that I will return you back. Now in that process a person might have self-doubt because they're not just expelling you, they are telling you that you are expelled and that your Lord is incapable of bringing you back or you are not worthy of divine support. Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala says, قُلْ رَبِّي أَعْلَمُ مَنْ جَاءَ بِالْمُدَىٰ وَمَنْ قُمَى فِي ضَلَالٍ مُّبِيءٍ Say that my Lord knows who has come with the truth and who is in clear error. Allah is the one who determines who is worthy and who is not. Allah has made you worthy. Ya Muhammad sallallahu alayhi wa sallam and Allah who revealed the Qur'an to you
will certainly return you back to Makkah. Imagine that being the last thing that's planted in your heart and in your ear as you look back at it. You will return even if there is absolutely nothing in sight for you. The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam cannot find a single place in the world to be safe and Allah is telling him that you will be safe in your land and victorious and the world will testify to your righteousness and to your guidance. There are several verses that come down of the sequence. One of them subhanAllah was revealed very early on in Makkah. Again the most improbable times in the year 614. Four years after the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam received revelation where the Persians and the Romans have been fighting the longest war in history for over 700 years. And the Persians are finally coming to their final solution. They're mowing the lawn in all places where the Byzantines remain. Massacring at large. Removing them from their stronghold. And in the year 614 the Persians occupy Jerusalem and the Persian Empire massacres 90,000 people in Al-Quds. 90,000 people without the smart or dumb bombs without the missiles and airstrikes. 90,000 people are subjected to the sword and Jerusalem is conquered and every single holy sacrament of Christianity is confiscated and stolen by the Persian Empire and Qisla, the head of Persia sends a message to the head of the Byzantines that clearly your god was incapable of protecting you rather you should say that I am your god. Mocking the defeat. Mocking the pathetic situation.
In that same time where the Romans are running for their lives the Muslims have their first migration to Abyssinia. They too are now looking for a way to flee and the Byzantines who are allied to the Persians are saying to the Muslims who felt an affinity towards the Christians that your turn is coming. You see how this all flipped on them? That the earth is conspiring against you and it is done. It's only a matter of time. And in that moment Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala reveals, Alif-Lam-Mim The Romans have been defeated in the nearest land and after their defeat they will be defeated in a few years. To Allah is the decree before and after And on that day the believers will rejoice in a victory that will not help whomsoever He will. And He is the Mighty, the Merciful. The promise of Allah, Allah does not fail in His promise. But most of the people do not know. Put yourself in the shoes of a person in Mecca right now. You can't even pray in public anymore. And the Romans are being wiped off the face of the earth and you're being told you're next. And your brother, your sister has fled to Abyssinia maybe died along the way. And Allah says, The Romans have been defeated in the lowest point of earth. Also the area of Palestine may Allah liberate it all. In the lowest point of earth.
In the lowest point of earth. And they will be victorious, Sayyidina Ali. They're coming back. They will be victorious. And Allah even puts a timeline to it. That only He can do that. No one of us can do that. Allah says, In a few years. Count it, three to nine years. To Allah is the decree before and after. And it's not like Allah will come to charge when He brings them back. Allah was in charge in the first place and Allah is in control of the affair throughout the entire affair. And on that day, the believers will find joy in the victory of Allah. Allah gives victory to whom He wants. And He is the Most High, the Most Honorable, the Most Merciful. The promise of Allah. وعد الله لا يفلح الله وعدا Allah never breaks a promise. Allah never breaks a promise. That's all I need to hear. Allah never breaks a promise. But most people don't know. Abu Bakr as-Siddiq r.a. Ubayy ibn al-Khattab comes to him and says, So your god is now saying, three to nine years, the Romans will defeat the Persians. He said, Yep. He said, You want to bet? There is no risk in this, so the bet is halal. Abu Bakr r.a. He knows that what Allah says is true. He says, Sure. How much? Ten counts. Go ahead. Three years pass, four years pass. It's only getting worse for the Romans. It's only getting worse for the Muslims. Ubayy comes and says, You're probably remorseful now. You may want to back out of it. Abu Bakr said, No, increase it. Increase the weight. Go ahead. He said, A hundred counts. Go ahead. The Muslims migrate from Mecca to Medina. And in the same year, the year 623, that the Romans regain what was taken from them and more
and achieve victory over the Persians in the same year that comes next, 624, where Heraclius conquers the places of Zoroaster. Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala gives the Muslims Badr, the Battle of Badr. وَيَوْمَئِذٍ يَفْرَحَ الْمُؤْمِنُونَ بِنَصْرِ اللَّهِ Not only were the Romans victorious over the Persians in such an improbable way. At the same time, Allah gave victory to the Muslims over the Mushrikun in Badr in an improbable way. So the ayah carried a double meaning. يَوْمَئِذٍ يَفْرَحَ الْمُؤْمِنُونَ بِنَصْرِ اللَّهِ Dear brothers and sisters, when Abu Bakr as-Siddiq radiallahu ta'ala anhum affirms what he affirmed, I want you to bring it to Palestine for a moment and I'll go to some verses from Surah Isra. He also probably glanced over. Sometimes it's easier for us to believe that the dead are shuhada and they're hanging from the throne of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala and they're happy than it is to betray our emotions when we see little children with missing limbs and al-Bakr ibn al-Niyahu clearing the territory and speaking arrogantly and the hopes, the political hopes for Palestine diminishing. Sometimes it's easier for us to believe in the unseen than to make sense of the seen. And we always praise al-Siddiq, Abu Bakr radiallahu ta'ala anhum for the faith that he had in the Prophet ﷺ to go to the heavens and back, to al-Aqsa, to the heavens and back. Imkan ad-da'la fa-al-aqsa If he said it, he's telling the truth. But some of the scholars mentioned that it was just as courageous and just as sadaq, as much truthful as for Abu Bakr radiallahu anhum saying, I don't care what you're seeing. The odds don't matter to him. Because they pump their chest out and they show themselves with this power and the strength that they don't actually have to intimidate you
and to make you feel like you will never win. Sometimes it's easier for us to believe that the dead Palestinians are doing well than to make sense of what's happening with the living Palestinians. But sadaq in Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala being truthful and having no doubt in the promise of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala I don't care what they put on my screen. I don't care how much the odds seem stacked against us. Allah has promised And the Prophet sallallahu alaihi wa sallam mentioned of the signs of the day of judgment of Rahm, Ubaid and Muqtis. That Palestine will be free. That all of those people that have been expelled from Gaza will come back. And that Jerusalem will also be free. And that al-Masjid al-Aqsa will be free. And just as we are gathered here in this sadaq, may Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala gather us together in a larger congregation in al-Aqsa while it is liberated. Allahumma ameen. It will be free. Now here's the thing. The Prophet sallallahu alaihi wa sallam was just trying to flee death. Right now someone's just trying to escape death in Gaza, right? But they have their eyes on us. Even as Gaza is becoming improbable, they're saying all of Palestine will be free. Even as their homes are being demolished, they're saying, I will pray in the first diblah of Islam, al-Masjid al-Aqsa. When the Prophet sallallahu alaihi wa sallam was put in the khandaq, when he was put in the trench, where they were trying to eliminate Madinah, Allah showed him the light of the entire world with Islam reaching him. And I end with these verses from Surah Tafsirah. Subhanallah, subhanallah. How these verses connect. These verses are revealed to the Prophet sallallahu alaihi wa sallam. Surah Al-Isra, also known as Surah Bani Israel, which talks about the corruption of Bani Israel and what came to them as a result of their corruption.
Allah says, وَإِن كَاتُوا لَيَسْتَفِزُونَكَ مِنَ الْأَرْضِ يُفْرِجُونْكَ مِنْهَا And if they disturb you and they employ every single tactic to try to expel you from this lands of Mecca, they try to make life so unbearable on the Muslims that were left in Mecca that they would have PTSD when they left Mecca, they never want to come back. They try to make it so difficult that they would flee on their own. Isn't that what they do to our people in Quds and Al? Isn't that what they do to our people in Palestine? Now, who wants to live under occupation? Who wants to live without freedom of movement? Who wants to live there without the ability to import or export? Who wants to live without clean water? Who wants to live without all of these different things? The people of Palestine do because they know the blessings of that land. And Allah says to the Prophet shallallahu alaihi wasallam, they try to bother you. They try to pull all sorts of antics to try to make life unbearable for you in Mecca. And Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala says, وَإِذَا لَا يَلْبَثُونَ خِنَافَكَ إِلَّا قَلِيلًۭا And if they succeed in getting you out, then it's only a matter of time before Allah will pull them out instead. The same people that beat their chests and held their swords out and chased every last Muslim out of Mecca, Allah brought them out only a year later in Badr, Abu Jahl, and Uqba. All these people, and Allah caused them to be killed outside of Mecca by the same people that they drove out of Mecca. And you know what Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala says,
سُنَّتَنَا قَدْ أَرْسَلْنَا قَدْنَكَ مِنْ رَسُولِنَا This is the way, the sunnah, of all of the prophets that came before you, all of the messengers that came before you. وَلَا تَجِنُنِ سُنَّتِنَا تَحْوِيْنَا And you will not find a change in our sunnah. وَعْدَ اللَّهِ لَا يُفْرِقُ اللَّهُ وَعْدَهُ The promise of Allah, Allah does not betray His promise. The sunnah of Allah, no one will change the sunnah of Allah. The same people that drive you out will one day be driven out. The same people that try to make life unbearable for you will no longer live in the place that they tried to kick you out and make sure that you were never buried in. Dear brothers and sisters, سَنَهُوْتْ رَاجِعِينَ وَنَصْرٌ مِنَ اللَّهِ وَفَتْقٌ قَرِيبٌ These are messages that are to us and it's part of your faith to know in your heart for sure, I don't care if they empty out every single Palestinian in my lifetime, I will still believe that Allah SWT will return it to us. Although they won't succeed in doing so in the first place, but do you have that thinking, we will return. The last thing, the next surah after surah Rum, Allah SWT gives us surah Al-Ankabut. Do people think that they just say we believe and they're not going to be tested? We've tested the people that came before you, and it was through those tests that we came to know the truthful, and through those tests that we came to know the liars.
May Allah make us amongst the truthful, who are truthful in our hearts, truthful in our tongues, truthful in our deeds, truthful in affirming the truth that has come to us from Allah to the Messenger sallallahu alayhi wasallam. May Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala make firm the feet and the hearts of our brothers and sisters in Palestine, and give them victory, and may Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala allow us to partake in that as well. May Allah free al-Masjid al-Aqsa, restore Gaza, restore every single part of it that had a wrongdoing committed in it. May Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala allow us to return to our homes, and may Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala allow us to return to our ultimate home of Jannat al-Firdaus, with our beloved Messenger sallallahu alayhi wasallam. In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. May Allah make us from those who are obedient, and those who are true believers, and those who are Muslim, and those who are Muslim. Oh, the living and the dead, you are the one who hears, the one who is near, the one who answers to prayers. May Allah forgive us, and forgive us, and never separate us. O, our Lord, we have wronged ourselves, but if you forgive us and forgive us, we shall never be among the losers. O, Allah, You are the most forgiving and generous, and You love forgiveness, so forgive us. O, Allah, forgive our parents, and our Lord, have mercy on them as well as forgive us our children. O, our Lord, grant us from our wives and children a happy life, and make us the imams of the faithful.
This is the greatest remembrance of Allah. May Allah make us from those who are obedient, and those who are Muslim.
