My dear brothers and sisters, 30 years ago, in April of 1990, the Hubble telescope was launched into space. And since then, it has sent back some of the most amazing, majestic pictures of the universe. We have learned so much about our universe because of the Hubble telescope. However, what many people don't realize is that when it was first sent out, all the pictures that it sent back were completely blurry, and did not provide any meaningful information. And scientists, when they investigated, they found out the problem was that the lens of the Hubble had been polished incorrectly before its launch. And of course, once they had resolved it, it then showed the most beautiful pictures of our universe. My dear brothers and sisters, this example of the Hubble is like the example of our own lives. That we see the world through our eyes, but our heart is a lens by which we actually see this world. Our heart is what allows us to interpret events in a certain way, despite the fact that we might all see the same thing. And this is one of the aspects of life that we see, that many people see the exact same event in life, and they interpret it very differently. So I always think about that today, in light of the coronavirus, in light of everything that's happening. How are we responding? What do we see? And Allah Subhanahu wa ta'ala, He gives us some insight into this notion, that people can see the same thing and respond very differently. And He gave us the example in Surat Al-Ahzab, when He talked about how the believers differed, so fundamentally different than the hypocrites, and those who had a sickness in their hearts, and how they viewed the war that was taking place. So Allah Subhanahu wa ta'ala, He describes for us, He says, So Allah tells us that when the hypocrites, and those who had a sickness in their hearts, when they saw 10,000 people coming to attack them, their response was what?
Allah and His Messenger have promised us nothing but deception. They have lied to us. But the believers, they have the exact opposite attitude. Allah Subhanahu wa ta'ala, He said, The believers said what? They said they saw 10,000 people coming towards them. And their response was, this is exactly what Allah and His Messenger have promised us. And Allah and His Messenger have indeed spoken the truth. And that only increased them in their faith and their submission to Allah Subhanahu wa ta'ala. So here you see my dear brothers and sisters, how people can see the exact same event and interpret it differently. Another example is when Allah Subhanahu wa ta'ala, He gives us some parables surrounding the tiniest of creatures He has made. And He's given us the example of a mosquito, of a spider, and even a fly in the Qur'an. But why has He given us this example? He has given us this example for us to see His Majesty, to see His ability, to see His wisdom, to see His beauty. But not everybody can see that. And so Allah tells us exactly the two different responses people have. Allah says that He is not too shy to even give the example of a mosquito to humanity. Now a mosquito, you say, man, what is the point of Allah giving the example of a mosquito? Well, those who believe, Those who believe, even in the mosquito, even in the fly, even in the spider, they see the signs of Allah They see the ability of Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَ تَعَالَى They see His رَحْمَة But those who disbelieve,
Those who disbelieve, what was their response? This is all much nonsense. What are you giving me these examples of spiders and flies and mosquitoes? What is the point of all this? They could not see what Allah wanted them to see. So I ask you today, and I ask myself, my dear brothers and sisters, how can we polish our hearts so that we see the majesty of Allah in the world? How can we polish our hearts so that we see the wisdom of Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَ تَعَالَى in everything He decrees? That which apparently looks good to us, and that which might apparently look like a hardship to us. And this is the example now of Allah has sent and allowed the spread of the coronavirus. It is smaller than a mosquito. It is smaller than a fly. It is smaller than a spider. In fact, it is thousands of times smaller than the width of a hair. But even in such a tiny creation that is on the order of nanometers, Allah He wants us to see Him. He wants us to return to Him. He wants us to love Him. He wants us to be in tune and connected with Him. But this, my dear brothers and sisters, can only happen if we polish our hearts with the nur of wahi. If we polish our hearts by turning to Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَ تَعَالَى in Qur'an, in reflection of His ayat, in following the words of the righteous scholars, in du'a, in istighfar, in tawbah. And once that heart becomes cleansed, once that heart becomes polished, we will see blessings in everything. We will see that Allah intended so much good for us in this. Allah wanted us to slow our lives down, perhaps, and spend more time with our family. He wanted to encourage us to do things that we used to make excuses that we had no time before. You know, I remember myself, since the new year, I told myself,
I'm gonna start going for a walk every single day. I'm gonna start going for a jog. And every day, I told myself I'd do it, and every day I'd find excuses. My kids, they need me to drive them to their practices. You know, my extracurricular activities to do here and to do there. Not until I was stuck at home, in social isolation, that I realized that every single day I'm gonna walk multiple times a day. Alhamdulillah! It took Allah to send and allow the spreading of a virus for me to pick up on a habit which I had been wanting to do so bad. This is a chance that we can show our sidq, our truthfulness, to Allah What has Allah facilitated for you and I in this circumstance? What were all the goals and ambitions that we had, that we were just too busy to seek before? Was it quality time with our spouses? Was it quality time with our children? Was it a project around the house? Was it reading something? Was it learning a new skill? There are so many things that we wish we had time for. Memorizing Qur'an, memorizing a surah, maybe even our prayers, that we found ourselves just too busy to focus on our salawat. This has been a chance of mercy to us, my brothers and sisters. But only if the nur of Allah Only if His revelation is polishing our hearts. So I implore you and I implore myself that we look to Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَ تَعَالَى during these times. We beg Him to give us a heart that is polished, that projects the reality of the world through a tahidic lens, through a Qur'anic lens, through a lens that Allah He loves. And how do we do this? The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said in a hadith Qudsi that Allah said that my servant does not get closer to me by anything greater than that which I have obligated upon him. And then once he does those obligations, he becomes closer and closer to me through the voluntary acts that he can do. And once he gets that close to me, Allah says that I love him. And once Allah loves somebody,
he becomes the eyes through which an individual sees. He becomes the ears by which an individual hears. He becomes like he's with that person with his limbs when he walks and he goes somewhere. So if we want to have that lens that is Islamic-centric, Qur'anic, tahidic, we move toward Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَ تَعَالَى in pleasing Him and that which He's obligated us and that which is voluntary. And I ask Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَ تَعَالَى to show us His numerous blessings, His rahmah, His maghfirah, His love, His hikmah, His ilm, and all that He decrees for us.
