Umm Darda, may Allah be pleased with her, she narrates that, I saw my husband Abu Darda radiyaAllahu anhu, praying throughout the night and making a singular supplication, a single supplication throughout that night. And he was saying the du'a of the Prophet salallahu alayhi wa sallam, Allahuma kama hassanta khalqi, fahassin khuluqi, O Allah, as you have beautified my external appearance, then beautify my character. Your khalq is your external creation. Your khuluq represents your character because it's your internal image. Imagine if you could have an internal image of who you are. If your character could be imagined and could be put into an image, what would it look like? Imagine if you could put your character in the mirror. And that's really what this du'a speaks to. But why would Abu Darda spend the entire night making this du'a? He didn't make du'a for anything else except for good character. So Umm Darda said, I asked him at fajr, finally in the morning, I said to my husband, I said, Ya Abu Darda, I did not hear you ask Allah for anything except for good character. So why is it that you didn't ask Allah for anything else? And he said to her, O Umm Darda, verily the Muslim beautifies his character, and as a result of that good character, treats people so well that they make du'a for him, that they supplicate for him, until he enters Jannah as a result of that. And a Muslim also corrupts his character until he hurts someone as a result of that bad character, and someone supplicates against him, and he enters hellfire as a result of that. So the only thing that he wished for was that good character, because if that good character was genuine and sincere, not only would that mean that he had a genuine connection with Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala, but that would mean that all of the people that he touched,
as second nature, just because of the goodness of himself, that all of that would testify for him on the day of judgment. And Abu Dujanah, may Allah be pleased with him, as he was passing away, and he was asked, what is it that makes you most hopeful of your relationship with Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala, or the great deeds that you've done? You were a warrior, you fought alongside the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam on so many different days, you grabbed the Prophet, peace be upon him, on the day of Uhud, and your back was covered in arrows, to the point that you look like a hedgehog, because of all the arrows that hit your back. So what is it that makes you hopeful of the mercy of God? He said that, nothing makes me more hopeful of the mercy of Allah, except that I never use this tongue to hurt another person, subhanAllah. So, may Allah give us good character, and may Allah allow that good character to not just be true to his creation, but to allow it to be a reflection of our sincerity to the Creator. May Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala never allow us to hurt another person, knowingly or unknowingly, so that they testify against us on the day of judgment, and hurt us, or cause us doom. May Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala forgive us for the harm that we do, knowingly or unknowingly, and may Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala enter us into Jannah by his mercy, pleased by our good character. Allahuma ameen. Jazakum Allah khayran. See you all next time, inshaAllah. Wassalamualaikum warahmatullahi wabarakatuh.
