Episode 17: His Prayer Amazed the Prophet ﷺ | Prayers of the Pious

June 1, 2018Dr. Omar Suleiman

A du’a from an unknown Bedouin who called to Allah with so much praise he amazed the Prophet ﷺ.

“Oh He whom the eyes do not see, nor can be mixed with doubts, nor can be described by any who describe, nor is changed by any events, nor fears any officer, who knows the weights of the mountains, the measurements of the seas, the number of raindrops, the number of leaves on trees, and the number of whatever is shrouded in the darkness of night and brightened by the light of day, for whom no heaven or earth is concealed, nor a sea in its depths, nor a mountain in its ruggedness! Make the best of my life the end of it, the best of my deeds the last of them, and the best of my days the Day I meet You.”

Asalamualaikum warahmatullahi wabarakatuh everyone and welcome back to the prayers of the pious. This is a very special narration because similar to when the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam walked by and heard a special prayer from Ibn Mas'ud radiallahu anhu. He's walking by and he's listening to the prayer of a pious man, but this is an unknown Bedouin man. Even the Prophet peace be upon him does not know who he is. And this was a du'a that would amaze the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam. And you have to understand that the Prophet peace be upon him is more connected to his Lord than anyone else. So he senses that connection when he hears it from other people and he appreciates that genuine connection that someone might have with Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala even if they don't call upon him in the most perfect of ways, but they call upon him knowing how perfect he is and how capable he is. So in this narration the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam he walked by this man in the masjid and it's a simple Bedouin man and he heard this man calling out to Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala with this mind-blowing du'a and this is truly a mind-blowing supplication. I might even have difficulty translating it to be honest with you. But this man calls upon Allah and he says, Ya man la tara hu al a'yun, O he whom the eyes do not see, wa la tu khalituh al dhunoon, nor can be mixed with doubts, wa la yasifuhul wasifoon, nor can be described by any of those who describe, wa la tughayruhul hawadith, nor can be changed by any events, wa la yakhshat dawair, nor fears any oppressor or any person of perceived power, ya'nu mathaqeel al jibal, he knows the weights of the mountains, wa maka'eel al bihar, and he knows the measurements of the seas, and he knows wa'adada qatar al amtar, and he knows the precise drops of
raindrops, the number of the raindrops, wa'adada waraq al asjaar, and who knows the number of leaves on the trees. And then he continues to even mention subhanAllah, so he's talked about and it's pretty profound honestly, saying this du'a, being in nature where there are squirrels around and there are some raindrops that are falling and beautiful trees around. If you see how he's encompassed thus far in this du'a, all of the elements of nature around, but he also understands that there are certain things that are not even perceived in terms of nature to him. So he continues after mentioning the amount of leaves that are on the trees, he says wa'adada ma'adlam alayhi al layl, wa ashraq alayhi al nahar, and he knows the number of whatever is shrouded in the darkness of the night and brightened by the light of the day, and he continues to mention those things, wa la tuwari minhu as-sama'un sama'a, wa la ardun arda, wa la bahrun ma fi qa'rihi, he says that those things that for whom no heaven, or he's mentioning about Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala, for whom no heaven or earth is concealed, nor a sea in its depths, nor a mountain in its ruggedness. So far this du'a, I mean this man has brought the entire creation into his du'a, into his supplication to Allah, and he hasn't even made an ask of Allah yet, and this teaches us that the thana, the praise of your Lord can never be exaggerated, so you praise and you praise and you praise, and he hasn't even got to his talab yet, he hasn't even got to his request yet, and the Prophet peace be upon him is blown away by this man's du'a as he encompasses everything around him in that supplication, and then he makes this du'a and you can see if it sounds familiar, he says, wa ja'al khayra umri aakhirahu, wa
khayra amali khawatimahu, wa khayra ayyami yawma alqaaka fee, he said and make the best of my days, or make the best of my life the end of it, the best of my deeds the last of them, and the best of my days the day that I meet you, it is pretty much verbatim the du'a of Abu Bakr as-Siddiq may Allah be pleased with him. The Prophet salallahu alayhi wa sallam as he heard this du'a, he actually appoints a man in the narration to stay with him and to wait for him to finish his prayer, meaning this bedouin is just getting started, and to inform the Prophet peace be upon him when he's done. The Prophet salallahu alayhi wa sallam comes back to him and he asks him who he is and where he's from, so he says I'm just a man from Banu Amr, and the Prophet salallahu alayhi wa sallam gives him a gift, and he says to him do you know why I'm giving you this gift, he said maybe we're related, the Prophet salallahu alayhi wa sallam knows, he says it's because of the beauty of your praise, li husni thanaik, the beauty of your praise of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala. So subhanAllah this is you know, a person doesn't have to be a poet to call upon Allah with beautiful praise, you'd be surprised how poetic you can be when you're sincere, and I think that that's the beauty of this particular dua, of this simple bedouin man who amazed the Prophet salallahu alayhi wa sallam, and whose supplication would find itself on the tongue of Abu Bakr as-Siddiq may Allah be pleased with him. So may Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala the creator of the heavens and the earth, he who knows the weight of the mountains and the measurements of the sea and the number of raindrops and the number of leaves on the trees, and he whose knowledge encompasses in the darkness of the night and the brightness of the day, things that we cannot see, may Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala forgive us and make the best of our lives the end of them, and make the best of our deeds the last of them, and the best of our days the day that we meet him. Allahumma ameen. Jazakum Allah khayran. See you all next time inshallah.
