As-salamu alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh. Welcome back to Prayers of the Pious. So when you look at the companions of the Prophet, peace be upon him, you find a man by the name of Hudhayfa ibn al-Yaman, radiyaAllahu anhu. And Hudhayfa was the secret keeper of the Prophet, peace be upon him. He was the one with whom the Prophet, salallahu alayhi wa sallam, entrusted the names of the hypocrites, the names of the munafiqeen. And Hudhayfa says that people used to ask the Prophet, peace be upon him, about the good things. They used to ask the Prophet, salallahu alayhi wa sallam, about Jannah. They used to ask the Prophet, salallahu alayhi wa sallam, about hopeful things. He says, wa kuntu as'aluhu anish sharr. But I used to ask him about evil and evil consequences so that I could avoid those things. And this was actually an experiment I did some time ago. I asked, you can actually find this lecture online. The name of that lecture escaped me now, but it was a YM convention several years ago. And I asked the crowd, I said, how many of you are more motivated by the fear of hellfire? Half of them raised their hands. I said, how many of you are more motivated by the promise of paradise? Another half raised their hand. Because different personalities connect with different things. And that should translate into your specific supplications. So in the case of Hudhayfa, he used to make this dua, he used to make this very particular supplication. He used to say, Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min sabahin nari wa min masaiha. Oh Allah, I ask you or I seek shelter with you from the mornings and the evenings in the hellfire. Meaning, I don't want to touch hellfire in any way whatsoever. He was so afraid of punishment that he did not want to in any way encounter it. So he used to say, Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min sabahin nari wa min masaiha. And then here's what that translates to at the end of his life. When Hudhayfa was about to die, he made this dua, he made this beautiful supplication. Honestly, I get goosebumps, subhanAllah, just thinking about this. He said, haathihi aakhiru sa'atin minad dunya.
He said, oh Allah, this is my last hour in this world. Allahumma inni kat'alamu anni uhibbuka fabarik li fi riqaika. Oh Allah, you know that I certainly love you, so bless my meeting with you. How much love do you have to have with Allah and confidence in that love? As you're departing from this world, you can say, oh Allah, you know how much I love you. You know with certainty that I love you. So bless me in my meeting with you. This is a test for all of us. Imam Ahmed rahimallah said, if you want to know what your position with Allah is, then look at his position with you. If you want to know how much God loves you, then look at how much you love him. For Hudhayfa to have that confidence and that connection with Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala, to not just say, oh Allah, I love you, but to say, oh Allah, you know that I love you, is a very powerful testament to the type of relationship that he had with Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala. Of course, in our situation, the Prophet salallahu alayhi wa sallam taught us to ask Allah, Allahumma inni as'alika hubbaka, oh Allah, I ask you for your love, wa hubba man yuhibbaka, and the love of those that love you, and the love of every action that would bring us closer to your love. So asking Allah for his love, asking Allah to love him, asking Allah for the love of those that are beloved to him, and asking Allah for the love of those that love him, and asking Allah for the love of every action that brings us nearer to his love, all of this is what encompasses us at the end of the day, because hope and fear are only the wings, but the love of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala is the body, and that's the crux of the matter. So may Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala allow us to die knowing with certainty that we love him, and that we are beloved to him, and may Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala let our reunion with him on the Day of Judgment be a reunion of those that love one another. May Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala allow us to be gathered together in his love on the Day of Judgment.
Allahumma ameen. Jazakumullah khayran. I'll see you all next time inshallah. Salamualikoum wa rahmatollahi wa barakato.
