As-salaamu alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh everyone. Welcome back to Qur\'an 30 for 30. Alhamdulillah we\'re on juz three. There\'s a Shaykh here, I think he\'s from South Africa, Zimbabwe, I forgot his name. Ismail maybe? Do you know who he is? Yes, he\'s my fellow African brother insha\'Allah. Alhamdulillah. Finally we have Mufti Ismail Menk alhamdulillah our beloved brother alhamdulillah. It\'s such a joy to finally get you on alhamdulillah. Jazakumullah khair. It\'s an honor to be on. We don\'t normally get an opportunity being so far away and so busy in our lives but alhamdulillah Allah creates the opportunities for us alhamdulillah. Shaykh when\'s the first time we met? Four years ago maybe? Was it? No, I think was it in Doha? Come on Shaykh, come on. SubhanAllah, you\'ve got to remind me. I\'ve known you for such a long time that you\'re just a part of us. And so when I first met you it\'s become irrelevant.
Alright, Caribbean, Trinidad. Ah, that was a long time ago. He said four years ago, now I\'m very offended. And actually I have a bone to pick, he just reminded me with his eloquent answer in his makhraj. May Allah bless you. Your Jollof rice take, that\'s probably how you remember me. You said you remember me from online. You\'re Nigerian so the Jollof in Nigeria was the better but when you\'re in Ghana the Jollof in Ghana is the best. So what I said is Jollof tastes best where you eat it. So if I\'m eating it in Nigeria it\'s the Nigerian one tastes better. If I\'m eating it in Ghana, the Ghanaian one eats better. But if you cook the Nigerian one in Ghana, it\'s not as good as being the Nigerian in Nigeria. And I\'m actually honest about that. These are really political. You\'re a little too refined with the Jollof. So we just agree on Senegal, or agree on somewhere else? That\'s where it started, we give them their respect. It\'s strange how every time we\'re talking about Ramadan and everything happening in Ramadan and food comes up. But it\'s the month when we\'re not supposed to be eating. We\'re happy to have you with us. We want to hear your reflection. We\'re in Juz 3, what is your lesson for us? Thinking about the verses of Juz 3, one verse sticks out for me and I\'m sure there are so many verses. What I\'ve learnt over time is that when you look at the Qur\'an again, a different reflection becomes a point of pondering. You read it again, another point comes. Today I want to go through verse number 281, where Allah Almighty reminds us about something very, very important.
وَاتَّقُوا meaning be conscious of or some translate it as fear the day. I normally like to say be conscious of the day that you are going to return in it to Allah. So be conscious of your death, be conscious of going back to Allah. When He will take account of all of your deeds, you will be recompensed for everything you\'ve done. You get good. Bad, you\'re the one to blame. And Allah Almighty says, لَا يُظْلَمُونَ They will not be wronged in any way. So you and I will not be wronged. Justice shall happen, it will happen. On earth sometimes we don\'t see the justice and we\'re not satisfied. Allah promises us that ultimately there is a day of judgment and everyone should be conscious of the day. We would not be wrong to say you should fear the day. Because if you really fear that day, you wouldn\'t utter words that are hurtful, abusive, wrong and so on. You wouldn\'t do anything that is wrong, especially to others. If you look at the genocide being committed, these people need to know there is a day of judgment. If they had any fear of a day they\'re going to return to their own maker, they would never have done what they\'ve done. So it is a sign that those who do anything and everything without thinking of the last day or accountability, they don\'t actually believe in Allah in the true sense, even if they claim so. And for us who are believers, we should always be conscious of it. When we\'ve sinned, we quickly come back because we feared the day that we\'re going to go back to Allah. Because we\'re human, we might falter. When we falter, we quickly return to Allah.
Oh Allah, forgive me. What I did was wrong. The month of forgiveness comes, the seasons of forgiveness. On a daily basis there are times that are more special than others in terms of seeking the forgiveness of Allah, such as the time of tahajjud. So all of this shows that we are conscious of Allah. Be careful. Watch out. Be conscious of the day in which you\'re going to return to Allah. So even if it comes to the good that I want to do, I increase it. I make sure that it\'s maximised, it\'s done to the best degree possible. Because I\'m going to return to Allah, I want to take something with me that\'s really good. I want to be proud of what I\'ve done for the sake of Allah. And the other side of the coin is I want to make sure that I repent from the bad that I may have fallen into, or something I may have done, so we never lose hope in the mercy of Allah. This verse is really something I felt that it sticks so much, so that when I lead the khutbah of Jumu\'ah, I always repeat the same verse. At the beginning of the khutbah, after the hamd, Allah Azza wa Jal, after the praising of Allah and sending blessings and salutations upon Muhammad (ﷺ), I always say, Every soul shall be recompensed, whatever it has earned, and none will be oppressed. SubhanAllah, I think it\'s amazing that the way we interact with time as a whole, in Ramadan, think about how prominent and effective knowing the day of Eid is there, right? Like you know it\'s there, you have a timeline, you know you have 29 or 30 days, you\'re working so hard to make sure that you achieve what you need to for Ramadan, you\'re timing yourself, you\'re pacing yourself, you\'re putting everything towards Laylatul Qadr,
that 27th night, and then what follows afterwards of the day of Eid, and just thinking about that day of Eid. In many ways putting a day ahead of you, even in Ramadan we do that as well, we cycle towards that day and we pace ourselves knowing that that day is there. You know something comes to my mind, even from a materialistic perspective, people have mostly on earth their salaries come at the end of the month, you know, so they\'re looking forward to it and you\'re going to be paid and it keeps you going, okay I\'m going to have my salary coming 29th, 30th, whenever it is, but normally it\'s that. Even from a material perspective, so that\'s such a good point because to focus on something and to keep it as a yardstick or a measure, you know, I\'d like to achieve this, is something very important. When you know I have a day that I\'m focused on, like you said the day of Eid, amazing, amazing. It keeps you going. In fact another point that I spoke about before is the exact duration of Ramadan is so perfect, if it were less than a month, we wouldn\'t really benefit as much as we do and if it was more than that, perhaps we might have become a little bit, you know, less engaged with the month. So when Allah gives you that prescribed time, it\'s perfect, exact. SubhanAllah, so the lesson, let\'s say that you\'ll be paid on the day of judgement. You\'ll be paid on the day of judgement, so look for your salary on the day of judgement. So that\'s where you look to get paid, look to get paid on the day of judgement. May Allah subhanahu wa ta\'ala allow us to be paid in good and may Allah subhanahu wa ta\'ala protect us from the sins that could doom us on that day. And may Allah pay us with the bonuses as well. Because he says that if you come with a good deed, we multiply it for you, so you get bonuses on that day, masha\'Allah. SubhanAllah, the verses that I was going to talk about are actually directly tied to this. Ali Imran, Allah subhanahu wa ta\'ala mentions to us,
Allah subhanahu wa ta\'ala mentions to us in these verses that say, Oh Allah, مَالِكَ الْمُلْكِ The king of all kings, the possessor of all dominion. You give from your dominion to whom you will and you take it from whom you will and you honor whom you will and you disgrace whom you will and your hand is all good, verily you have power over all things. You bring the night into the day. And then you merge the day into the night. Allah subhanahu wa ta\'ala says, You bring life out of death and you bring death after life or out of life. And at the end of this, Allah subhanahu wa ta\'ala says, You give to whom you will without any limits whatsoever. And this part here, Allah gives what He will without any limits. Now I want to start actually, subhanAllah, before I get to the main lesson. The idea here that the thing, the hal that we often see, the situation that we often feel is most impossible to change is global power dynamics. It\'s like this empire, this tyrant seems invincible. And subhanAllah, مُغَيِّرُ الْأَحْوَالِ Allah azza wa jalla changes the situation and the ظالم that started to think that he was untouchable, the tyrant, the empire that thought that they were untouchable, Allah subhanahu wa ta\'ala switches the situation, flips it. And sometimes even believers like when we think about things changing in our lives, we think this empire, this superpower will never go down. But Allah subhanahu wa ta\'ala changes it. But then to bring it to our personal lives, Allah azza wa jalla says, This is really where I want to focus.
It\'s really interesting that Allah azza wa jalla will speak then to the story of Zakariya alayhi as-salam. And Zakariya alayhi as-salam is someone who will make du\'a to Allah subhanahu wa ta\'ala. And through the inference by Maryam alayhi as-salam, ask Allah subhanahu wa ta\'ala what you want, the inference. Why? Allah azza wa jalla gives without limits. And so when he sees Maryam alayhi as-salam and he says, Where is this fruit coming from? Where is this food coming from that\'s out of season? Her response is one that speaks to the matter of what she knows that the heart of Zakariya that he does not want food. He wants a child. And she says, It is from Allah and verily Allah gives what he wants to whom he wants, whenever he wants without any limit whatsoever. This is so profound because then you see Zakariya alayhi as-salam\'s du\'a. And Zakariya alayhi as-salam you know sometimes you\'re making du\'a and you\'re putting like you\'re putting it in the realm of what is ma\'qul, what I can think about, right? What I can think about in terms of dimensions. And so you start asking Allah subhanahu wa ta\'ala but maybe you start attaching some things like I know this is probably not possible. I know that this is difficult. I know this. I know that. But maybe like you start saying that maybe you can put this sabab, this reason for this to come about or this to happen or that to happen. And the reality is that To call upon Allah subhanahu wa ta\'ala with certainty, with yaqeen, is to not try to put conditions upon the answer from Allah subhanahu wa ta\'ala. And Zakariya alayhi as-salam does just that. He doesn\'t say ya Allah, I\'m old so maybe you could give me a child through this route. Maybe something could happen this way. Maybe this is too audacious of an ask. He presents himself to Allah subhanahu wa ta\'ala. And he knows that he\'s presenting himself to a generous Lord. You\'ve never let me down before O Allah.
I\'ve never been deprived in my du\'a to you before. So he presents himself to a Lord that he knows is kareem, that is generous. And he knows that Allah subhanahu wa ta\'ala will give in the best of ways. So he doesn\'t put limitations on his du\'a. Now what I find really interesting here is that when we make these types of du\'as to Allah subhanahu wa ta\'ala, the flip side is that some people get disappointed when the du\'a doesn\'t get answered exactly like they want it to be answered. They feel Allah did not hear them. Right. And the Prophet (ﷺ) mentioned that Allah azza wa jalla will answer the du\'a of one of you until you say دعوت فدعوت فلم يستجب لي that I made du\'a and Allah did not answer me. So how do you balance these two emotions? And that\'s sort of the reflection that I want to just give in this regard. You make du\'a to Allah subhanahu wa ta\'ala knowing that there is no such thing as possible versus impossible or easy and easier. You make du\'a to Allah subhanahu wa ta\'ala knowing that He is capable and able and willing to answer in the most miraculous ways possible beyond your comprehension. But by the same token you don\'t limit Allah subhanahu wa ta\'ala to an answer that you find only conceivable by your comprehension as satisfactory to you. So if you ask Allah subhanahu wa ta\'ala with the greatest ask and Allah azza wa jalla does not even give you the minimum of that ask as far as you can perceive it you\'re still satisfied because you know the relationship dynamic between you and Allah subhanahu wa ta\'ala. I will ask Allah azza wa jalla and know that He can do anything He wants without limits but I will be satisfied with however He chooses to answer me with His bounty even if that means relegating that entire answer to the hereafter I\'m satisfied with that alhamdulillah and I will not see that as a limitation of His answer or a limitation of His bounty to me. Alhamdulillah I\'m asking Allah al-kareem and I know Allah subhanahu wa ta\'ala can hear and I know Allah azza wa jalla answers in a way that\'s best for me. And to add to that and when a person trusts Allah and they love Allah
they know that Allah will not do something that is harmful even if they were asking for it because Allah knows the future and He knows how things are going to pan out He knows what we don\'t know so He might hold back something we\'re desperately asking for because He knows it\'s not good for you and this is the reason why the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) says at times one of the ways of the du\'a being answered is He will hold it for the akhira He will give you something in return for the conviction with which you called out to Him and He didn\'t give you what you wanted based on you know it\'s like a person asking for a child or asking for wealth if Allah knows that by that happening in your life something very negative is going to come about if He doesn\'t give it to you be satisfied oh Allah I trust you you know I want this I desperately want it but I trust you and that\'s what\'s so amazing about the amr al-mu\'min you know the Prophet (ﷺ) said amazing is the affair of the believer you know they thank Allah subhanahu wa ta\'ala they are shakirin from what Allah subhanahu wa ta\'ala has given them whatever Allah has predestined and all of this falls under the category of iman and Allah subhanahu wa ta\'ala because you know the word iman comes from aman which means safety that belief and trust and I dare use the word vulnerability to Allah subhanahu wa ta\'ala because when you trust in Allah you don\'t know the outcome you don\'t know what\'s going to happen so you\'re vulnerable in saying Allah I leave the affair to you ya rabbal alameen I know that you created the affair I leave the affair to you and I do not think for the shadow of doubt or for the blink of an eye that I have any type of control over this and that iman is what\'s going to pull me through manifested in different ways trust, love, fear, awe all of these manifestations and ways of worship of Allah subhanahu wa ta\'ala the opportunity to come closer to him through these different spiritual emotional attachments that we may have towards our creator is beautiful
when one steps back and ponders over the faith of the Muslim how it\'s reliance on the creator of the heavens and the earth and that\'s what I want to talk about particularly in the verse where Allah subhanahu wa ta\'ala mentions the ones that have taqwa and he mentions for them that there will be jannat there will be for them the heavens he goes on the next verse he says the statement of these people and it\'s very important that when you know it\'s so beautiful about Islam always think about you know Allah knows we all know this Allah knows what was what is what will be and some scholars mention even the hypotheticals but Allah gives you the exact dialogue like what they\'re going to say in the next life some of the things we may say internally that is the knowledge of Allah that he has al-\'aleem he knows every single thing there\'s not a leaf that falls from a tree except that he knows it so Allah is going to tell you what will be said or what has been said when he says here after I seek refuge with Allah from the accursed Satan those that say we do indeed believe so forgive us what\'s beautiful here is that they say verily we believe we have this belief in you we believe you and we believe in you we believe in your qualities your capabilities we know that we do not have those qualities no one no form of creation which you have created has those qualities and capabilities for that reason for that reason of our belief which is conditioned to receive the request forgive us from our previous sins which is beautiful as well that shows that even though we have this belief your name is al-ghaffar for a reason your name is al-ghaffar the all-forgiving because we will make mistakes we will fall short but it\'s that iman that we have as the baseline as that form of safety
that when not if but when I perform that bad deed and I fall short and I slip ya Allah I turn back to you because of that baseline that I have of belief and trust and honor and faith in you ya rabbi al-alameen then they think about that day when the nar will be present when we will be in front on the qantar we will stand on the blade that is sharp as thin as a hair and is very very sharp and we will see the hellfire below us forgive us for we do not fall into the azab of the nar it is very very important that the muslim is always conscious of their iman and they always try their best to renew that iman firstly to have it to know who Allah is and to know him is to love him but after you know him there are times where aspects of that iman will not be activated but in this month of Ramadan Allah deprives you of eating and drinking of basic necessities for you to focus because focus is really knowing what to say no to in order to say yes to that which is prioritized so when you leave off eating and drinking to focus on Allah subhanahu wa ta\'ala that is where when this du\'a comes to life the names and attributes of Allah come to life all three manifestations of them come to life o Allah you are the pardoner of the noble you love to pardon so pardon all of us it comes to life and in this month of Ramadan is a huge opportunity to allow these names and attributes to manifest in your life and in your actions by admitting your shortcomings and by acknowledging the blessing that he has given you of iman so when we say oh our lord the one that raises me and brought me to this stage of still having this iman
we believe because of this belief ya Allah I request your forgiveness and I request on that day to protect me from the fire from whatever I have earned but I know ultimately it is not only with my actions it is not reciprocal it is not reciprocity because of my actions I enter jannah I know because of the rahmah that is the rahmah the mercy of Allah that encompasses and covers all of this but it is the actions of the small window of responsibility that Allah gives us after he guides us and shows us the way do we go the way to receive his mercy on that day when there is no return we will turn back to Allah subhanahu wa ta\'ala so may Allah make us of those that seek his forgiveness and on that day he is pleased with us ya rabbi as you were talking I was just thinking about how powerful the simple du\'a is that Allah mentions it in the Qur\'an as a statement by those people whom he praises and the only thing that they are mentioning as merit to seek what they want is we are believers that\'s all they say oh Allah we are believers so therefore forgive us oh our lord we have believed so therefore forgive us imagine how powerful the element and the issue of belief is in Allah subhanahu wa ta\'ala so we have to strengthen it we have to constantly remind ourselves about the various aspects of the greatness of Allah subhanahu wa ta\'ala he is indeed our lord and amazing lessons drawn Jazakumullah khair so seek your payment on the final day seek Allah subhanahu wa ta\'ala for Allah provides without limits and your greatest provision is your faith so that is the greatest thing that you present on the day of judgment you know subhanAllah it\'s really interesting because if you look at the relationship between Al-Baqarah and Ali Imran
Al-Baqarah is coming to guidance how you get it and Ali Imran really focuses on Rabbana la tuzigh qulubana ba\'da idh hadaytana oh Allah don\'t let our hearts deviate after you\'ve guided us so it\'s like step two here and that\'s really the point here is that when we\'re talking about this cycle and the way that Ramadan is a month and it represents our life as a whole is that just because you did well the first week of Ramadan doesn\'t guarantee that you\'re going to do well the second week just because you did well on the first of the last 10 nights doesn\'t mean that you\'re going to keep it strong till the last of the last 10 nights where Laylatul Qadr can be so you can lose a step and so you have to constantly seek Allah subhanahu wa ta\'ala, renew your intention to seek Allah subhanahu wa ta\'ala and Allah and his mercy and his forgiveness will reward accordingly by the night you know if I can add one thing talking about the days of Ramadan I always, I mean all of Allah subhanahu wa ta\'ala system where he\'s placed Laylatul Qadr most likely right at the end of Ramadan imagine if it was at the beginning I mean subhanAllah because now I find the most difficult days in terms of pushing yourself to maximize the benefit are the middle days because the beginning there\'s the excitement, the end we know it\'s going to be you know you\'re trying to press ahead to do the most you can but the middle it\'s not so easy therefore we\'ve got to make use of all the days of Ramadan inshallah. So sheikh on a lighter note because we\'re Alhamdulillah these are very valuable lessons can you name five sports that you can beat sheikh Abdullah Jawad we always see you jumping out of planes jumping out of planes really? swimming with dolphins I mean I\'ve swam with dolphins I\'ve never jumped out of a plane you do a lot of I\'m practicing for the solo inshallah you know for now we do a tandem skydive and if you take eight hours of lessons you could actually
get a license to do it on your own so inshallah we\'ll get there but nonetheless it\'s just something that what are five sports sheikh, you can\'t escape the question what can I beat him in? you know look at the man I mean I can tell you one for sure without ever having you see him play ping pong you can beat him in ping pong trust me I wouldn\'t I don\'t trust myself on that one actually you\'re too humble sheikh Abdullah can lift weights he can physically move things I can lift weights but maybe a little bit less than you I\'m in the same boat especially in Ramadan but I want to tell you something that I decided to do actively is to concentrate a little bit more on my health and on my physical fitness and inshallah I\'m going to take that much more seriously and I\'d encourage everyone to actually take their physical health much more seriously than they have been because it\'s something we don\'t talk about as much as we talk about other things I swear to God it\'s so serious because you can travel as we all do but once you\'re healthy you can\'t go anywhere may Allah grant us all goodness and protect us from sickness may Allah grant cure to those who are sick ameen I enjoyed having you on I hope it\'s not the last time no no inshallah once you get the ball rolling it rolls inshallah we\'ll see everyone tomorrow night may Allah bless you
