BismillahirRahmanirRahim. Nahmaduhu wa nasalli ala rasoolihi al-kareem. Amma ba'ad. As-salamu alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh. I hope all of you are benefiting from these videos that Yaqeen Institute is producing for all of us in this month of Ramadan. If you are, then you are familiar with this face and you can't miss this big turban. My first reminder was about a habit that we can develop when we first wake up in the morning. The second reminder was about a habit that we can develop in the afternoon. Today's video is dedicated to a habit that we must develop. We must develop in the evening time. This is a sunnah of the Prophet, salallahu alayhi wa sallam, and it comes directly from the Qur'an. Allah speaks about this in many places in the Qur'an and I'll highlight a few verses. When Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala talks about the kuffar of Makkah, the idol worshippers of Makkah, He talks about some of their characteristics and qualities that they had throughout the Qur'an. In one ayah in surah Mu'minoon, Allah says, مُسْتَكْبِرِينَ, they were very arrogant, مُسْتَكْبِرِينَ بِهِ, they were very arrogant. سَامِرٌ تَهْجُرُونَ, and right after arrogance, you would think that there must be something worse than that or at the same level of that that Allah will highlight that they had this quality. But when you hear these words that are mentioned and you understand the meaning, you will be so surprised. مُسْتَكْبِرِينَ بِهِ, they were arrogant. سَامِرٌ تَهْجُرُونَ, and they were people who would stay up late at night gossiping and wasting their time. عَجِيب! Among all the different things that they were doing wrong, burying their daughters, worshipping idols, and the list goes on, Allah through His infinite wisdom had to put this bad quality of theirs in the Qur'an for us
to remember and to reflect over. The fact that they used to stay up late at night, سَامُرَ means to stay up late to just relax and just talk and waste time. The Prophet ﷺ said لا سَمُرَةَ بَعْدَ الْعِشَاءَ, there should be no chit-chatting and gossiping after Isha Salah. Time to sleep. And this is in the Qur'an. سَامِرٌ تَهْجُرُونَ, they would stay up at night and gossip and just chit-chat and waste their time. Allah dedicates this passage to this quality of theirs so that He's trying to tell us that this is not something that we need to develop. This is something we should run away from. And unfortunately, unfortunately, most of the ummah, especially the youth of this ummah, begin, our nights have become like our days and our days have become like our nights. Sleep until 2, 3 o'clock in the morning, in the afternoon, sorry. And at night time staying up all night playing video games or wasting our time on something. This habit needs to leave for us to be successful. I'm not even going to talk about the medical sciences and the research that's been done on having good sleeping habits and good sleeping hygiene habits. We know that insomnia is so prevalent and you can research that. We don't need that to understand that this is the sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ and the different wisdoms of sleeping early and right after the Isha Salah, putting everything away and going to sleep and going to bed. Allah says in the Qur'an, وَهُوَ الَّذِي جَعَلَ لَكُمُ مُن لَيْلِ لِبَاسٍ وَالنَّوْمَ سُبَاتٌ وَجَعَلَ النَّهَارَ نُشُورًا Allah has made the night as a covering for us. Everything is dark as a covering, as a libas. وَالنَّوْمَ سُبَاتًا And the sleep at night as a means of relaxation. The Prophet ﷺ, he commanded us to sleep early at night and not to get involved with chit-chatting and gossip because we just prayed
Isha. And if we prayed Isha, all of our sins for that day have been erased. So it's best to sleep on a note that your sins have been removed and erased and now you sleep like that. And this habit was the habit of the Prophet ﷺ and the sahaba. Umar ibn Khattab used to walk around the streets of Medina and make sure no one is sitting around just chit-chatting and talking. He said, go to sleep, go to sleep because you people are going to stay up at night and sleep during tahajjud and fajr time. What has happened with the ummah today, most of us, is we stay up at night. I mean tahajjud is something of the past for most of the youngsters and most of us and we can hardly make it for fajr and shalaa. And we know one of the most essential qualities of successful people of this dunya, of the Fortune 500 companies, athletes, you look at Kobe Bryant, I mean the most essential thing was they would wake up early. And you cannot wake up when Kobe was asked about, you know, tell me something about basketball and how can I become a better player. I mean he mentioned two things and they were nothing to do with basketball. The first thing is sleep. Sleep on time. Sleep. Get your sleep in. And this is from the Prophet's habit and sunnah that he would sleep on time. He would say there is no point of staying up at night. So for us, of course if we have to stay up at night for ibadah and ilm, there is room for that but still, إِنَّ نَاشِئَةَ اللَّيْلِهِ أَشَدُّ وَأَقْوَى مُقِيلًۭا Allah in Surah Muzammil says, getting up and turning to your affairs and studying is much better and more effective than trying to stay up late at night and doing it. And we all know that. So hopefully we can develop this habit, this sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ of sleeping early and waking up early and rising early. JazakAllah Khair.
