We love life for the sake of Allah and we endure death for the sake of Allah and we love to honor Allah with whatever we have. But then He honors us as well by giving us an opportunity to not just take from that honor but to be elected by Him for the greatest honor. This is the standard. There will be people that will not like you. They will not like your message. But Allah is saying this to show that, look, I'm always there. There are still many odd nights ahead and many blessed nights ahead, so please do go ahead and sign up. Or do a one-time donation. You never know which one of these blessed nights could be that night. May Allah reward you all. We hope you've enjoyed this season in particular, SubhanAllah, where we're going through life lessons. And we're also getting many new guests, Alhamdulillah, with very enriching reflections. Today we're honored, Alhamdulillah, we have Shaykh Omar Hedroug. Shaykh Omar Hedroug is one of the lead Tarbiyah instructors at Al-Maghrib Institute, Alhamdulillah, teaches classes on Fiqh and Sira, has a course on the daily life of the Prophet (ﷺ). Alhamdulillah, I've been knowing you since your student days, Alhamdulillah, giving us rides. Me and my family were talking about when my kids were younger and the many canceled flights out of Chicago, which is a good chance to mention that you're from Chicago, Alhamdulillah. You're also serving in Chicago, Alhamdulillah, as an imam. You serve with Mohsen, with the Mohsen Umrah, special needs Umrah, Alhamdulillah.
May Allah bless you, you do a lot of good stuff. Jazairi, Lebanese, married to a Palestinian. That's what's up. When they say Algerians love Palestinians more than they love themselves, you're proving that with your marriage. We're trying to put words into action. Did you know that, Shaykh? I didn't know that. The Algerian team will lose to the Palestinians on purpose. It's a Eid to beat the Palestinians. They got the spirit of revolution, MashaAllah. I have to say, the solidarity from Ahl al-Jaza'ir is unlike any other. It's literally unmatched. It's unmatched. I think when people talk about hope in the Ummah, on a serious note, when will it change and the promise of Allah? Because the last year we talked about Surah Rum. How many shuhada from Al-Jaza'ir? They call it the land of a million, but it's actually, just in that time period, it was 1.5 million. But in the entire colonization, they said it was almost 8 million. So it's a lot. Millions of shuhada. Millions of shuhada. The French stacked their skulls, SubhanAllah. Millions of shuhada. May Allah accept all of them. That is a sign, SubhanAllah, not to give up hope. Because look where it is now. And that's where the solidarity comes from. That's where the solidarity comes from. SubhanAllah, it's deeply meaningful when you think about that idea of empathy. Ramadan teaches empathy. That solidarity comes out of empathy. Like when you talk about Ireland and the solidarity with Palestine, and South Africa and the solidarity with Palestine, the sections of the Ummah that have been through this, SubhanAllah, the greatest solidarity. May Allah honor our people in Al-Jaza'ir and around the world. Allahumma ameen. And with that, it's an honor to have you. Alhamdulillah. The honor is mine. Alhamdulillah. And with that, it's actually my lesson for today. Alhamdulillah.
My lesson is if you seek honor from other than Allah, you will be humiliated even if you win. If you seek honor from other than Allah, you will be humiliated even if you win. And the verse is from Surah Fatir, So I'm going to stop here for a moment insha'Allah, just halfway in this verse. Whoever seeks honor and power, then let them know that all honor and power belongs solely to Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala. Let's just take that part. Last time we talked about Allah's promise, Allah's plan. If you lose physically your life, you're still a winner. Allah Azza wa Jal mentions ذَلِكَ الْفَوْزُ الْكَبِيرُ When He talks about the people of the ditch, they succeeded. All of those shuhada of Jaza'ir, their lives were not in vain. All the shuhada of Gaza, all the shuhada of Lebanon, all the shuhada, their lives are not in vain. They sought honor from Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala and Allah honored them and there is no greater honor than a shahada. And that's a concept you don't understand if you're not a Muslim. Period. They make us out to be like a death cult. No, this is victory no matter what. We love life for the sake of Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala and we endure death for the sake of Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala and we love to honor Allah Azza wa Jal with whatever we have and we just pray for Allah's acceptance. And there is no greater honor than a shahada. And to win at the expense of your deen and your principles is actually humiliation. It's actually loss. And that is something SubhanAllah we talk about like what is political success look like for the Muslim community? What is social success look like for the Muslim community? What is progress look like for the Muslim community? If your ascension is directly tied to the degradation of your principles, then your ascension is actually loss. And that's where Umar (رضي الله عنه) when he enters into Jerusalem, one of the most iconic statements. Now often think about this.
Like if Umar bin Khattab (رضي الله عنه) was just giving a khutbah and he said on a minbar, right? That nahnu qawmun a'azzanAllahu bil-Islam. We are people that Allah gave honor to through Islam. wa nabtaghayna al-izzati lighayrihi azaalanaAllahu. And if we seek honor through anything else, Allah will humiliate us. Like if that was just a khutbah, that's enough. But to say that while you are entering Jerusalem in patched up clothes, the servant on the camel, and all of these, you know, pompous people waiting in front of you to see what the khalifa of Muslims looks like. And you're just like, we seek honor from Allah. That makes it that much more iconic. So it's the moment that he said it. And that's the thing in Islam, right? Like when you can say Alhamdulillah, when you can say la ilaha illallah, like in those most difficult times. For you to say it at that moment means you really, really mean it. Like you've deeply internalized that meaning. So lillahil-izzati jami'ah. To Allah belongs all honor and power. And that's why huwa al-aziz wa al-hamid. Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala is al-aziz wa al-hamid. Many of the scholars mention that that means that if a person seeks izzah from Allah Azza wa Jalla, so he is aziz by the izzah of Allah. He is honorable by the honor of the most honorable. If you seek power from the most powerful, you are powerful by virtue of seeking it from the source of all power, al-qadir. Subhanahu wa Ta'ala. But I'm going to go to the second part of this really quickly insha'Allah ta'ala. Allah Azza wa Jalla mentions that to him rise these noble words. Meaning al-athkar. The scholars mention that the words of remembrance, they raise your rank. And we know that. They cause you to be mentioned in the presence of the most high. Something we're actually talking about in the Ramadan series. That the heavens are filled with your praise because you're praising Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala. But the second part here is And righteous deeds are raised up by him. Now the Arabs used to say that first and foremost that this usage of language.
Like that a generous person would say, whoever needs money, then money is for that person. Like I'm there for you. So when Allah says whoever wants honor, the most honorable has the doors of honor open to you. And that's from his generosity Subhanahu wa Ta'ala. But then they go to the second part. Which is that, is it that Allah is praising good words and good deeds separately from each other? Or are they together? And some of the scholars of tafsir, they say that Means that the good deeds cause those good words to mean that much more. That the good deeds cause the good words. Actions cause words to be elevated in the sight of Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala. So going back to Sayyidina Umar (رضي الله عنه). Like he's saying those words in the middle of an iconic moment. So your good deeds are a testimony to your good words. And it's one thing to remember Allah Azza wa Jal with your tongue. It's another thing to let it emanate from your heart. And then for your deeds to actually be synchronized with those. And so Allah Azza wa Jal causes words and deeds to ascend. And deeds cause words to be more meaningful with Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala. And then finally Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala mentions in the same ayah وَالَّذِينَ يَمْكُرُونَ السَّيِّئَاتِ لَهُمْ عَذَابٌ شَدِيدٌ وَمَكْرُ أُولَٰئِكَ هُوَ يَبُورُ Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala mentions that those who plan evil. As for those who plot evil they will suffer a painful punishment. And the plotting of such people is doomed to failure. So it really builds into what we've been speaking about over the last few ajza' as well. May Allah Azza wa Jal make us amongst those who seek honor from Him. Who are honored through Him and honored through this beautiful religion of Islam. May Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala allow that to manifest in our hearts and in our words and in our deeds. Allahumma ameen. Ameen. Ameen. Beautiful. JazakAllah khair. Bismillah walhamdulillah wa salatu wa salamu ala khairi khalq. La nabina Muhammad wa ala alihi wa ashabihi wa man wala. Alhamdulillah.
Actually the verse that I wanted to just briefly talk about fits right in with what you mentioned Shaykh Omar. Which is, you know, even Surah Fatir is one of my favorite surahs in the Quran. And you get this idea of honor and strength and might belonging to Allah Azza wa Jal alone. And even the verse that you mentioned and then afterwards where Allah says, يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ أَنْتُمُ الْفُقَرَاءُ إِلَى اللَّهِ So Allah is reminding us that we are completely in need and dependent on Allah. And Allah Azza wa Jal is the one who is completely independent. You know, doesn't need anyone or anything else. And yet, then Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala gives us, not just shows us the source of honor. When he mentioned whoever is seeking honor, it's with Allah. But then he honors us as well by giving us an opportunity to not just take from that honor, but to be elected by him Subhanahu wa Ta'ala for the greatest honor. So later in the surah he says, ثُمَّ أَوْرَثْنَا الْكِتَابَ الَّذِينَ اصْطَفَيْنَا مِنْ عِبَادِنَا He mentions to us or he tells us that then we inherited, we gave as this inheritance the book, which is the greatest source of Izzah and honor. Just as the Prophet (ﷺ) told us that Allah Azza wa Jal raises with this book people and that he lowers with this book people. And he tells us that he gave this book, he entrusted it and bestowed it to the ones that he has, اصْطَفَيْنَا مِنْ عِبَادِنَا that he has specially elected and chosen. And when you hear that, that Allah has chosen and he has entrusted specific servants with this great honor, you think, like I read this and I think there's no way that someone like me could be elected or chosen or given that honor.
But then SubhanAllah, what does he say right after that? He says, فَمِنْهُمْ ظَالِمٌ لِنَفْسِهِ وَمِنْهُمْ مُقْتَصِدٌ وَمِنْهُمْ سَابِقٌ بِالْخَيْرَاتِ بِإِذْنِ اللَّهِ that he lists these like categories of people. And the first one that he mentions is the one that I think many of us kind of like put ourselves in that category, right? Like ظَالِمٌ لِنَفْسِهِ And scholars, they explained that they said it's the one who is falling short, right? The one who holds on to the book, they know that it's from Allah and they recognize that bounty, but they fall short like all of us do. They fall into things that they shouldn't be doing. They fall short when it comes to obligations. And some of the scholars, they said Allah mentioned that one first, not just because it's the most amount of people kind of find themselves in that, but so that that person who is ظَالِمٌ لِنَفْسِهِ who has shortcomings and flaws doesn't ever feel like they are like dissociated or detached from Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala that they still are from those that Allah has chosen and given this honor. وَمِنْهُمْ مُقْتَصِدٌ And then there's those who are like on the moderate path and they describe this as the ones who are doing the minimum, right? Like they are fulfilling their obligations, staying away from the prohibitions. And then there is السَّابِقُون The ones who are hastening and always at the forefront of doing good. And then you think like, okay, I'm just happy to even be from the ظَالِمُون from those who are wronging myself, but I'm trying. But then Subhanahu wa Ta'ala He even says سَابِقٌ بِالْخَيْرَاتِ بِإِذْنِ اللَّهِ So by the permission of Allah, so it's possible, right? Like I can get to that point even possibly. So Allah is giving us not just reassurance that you are still from those whom Allah Azza wa Jal has specially chosen and elected
but also giving us a roadmap and a path to even elevating and to become hopefully from السَّابِقُون And then he joins them all together and he says ذَلِكَ الْفَضْلُ الْكَبِيرُ ذَلِكَ هُوَ الْفَضْلُ الْكَبِيرُ That is the greatest honor and bounty from Allah. What is it? جَنَّاتُ عَدْنٍ يَدْخُلُونَهَا And the scholars they said this وَاو يَدْخُلُونَهَا Together is like the wow of hope, right? Because it includes all three of these groups by the permission of Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala. They all enter into Jannah. And so it's Allah reminding us of what again our greatest source of honor and Izzah is and then giving us that roadmap and that path that when you hold on to this book and you live as best as you can even with your shortcomings and your flaws that you're from those whom Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala has elected and entrusted with whatever category you find yourself in and hopefully insha'Allah getting to سَابِقٌ بِالْخَيْرَاتِ I love about this verse it's like Allah starts it off by showing his authority and ends it with his authority like near the end. He says عِبَادِنَا which is the تَشْرِيف It's like nobility of our servants showing that wow Allah associates you with him عِبَادِنَا our servants and then he mentions those three levels, right? Always giving the Muslim a goal like an aspiration. I'm ظَالِمٌ لِنَفْسِهِ In Ramadan insha'Allah I can reach a مُقْتَصِدٌ مُقْتَصِدٌ I can be سَابِقٌ بِالْخَيْرَاتِ The ظَالِمٌ لِنَفْسِهِ I want to be سَابِقٌ بِالْخَيْرَاتِ He had that intention. I mean you can go from being like the worst of the worst like ظَالِمٌ لِنَفْسِهِ in this regard to سَابِقٌ بِالْخَيْرَاتِ which is competing. Exactly, exactly. But all of that don't ever think that you did it by yourself. Yeah. By the permission of Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala and then on top of that you receive a reward from him. So that's so beautiful. It brings so much hope you know and that's what's so important especially for us.
I mean as people that we have a responsibility towards the ummah to never look down on people you know to never think that we're better than people to never talk to people in a certain type of way. You know and Subhanahu wa Ta'ala it's just a great great reminder. Jazakum Allahu khayran. Within that the ظَالِمٌ لِنَفْسِهِ the مُقْتَصِدٌ and the سَابِقٌ بِالْخَيْرَاتِ we're still human beings. We will still make mistakes and that is the nature of the human being. And you know as mentioned when we deal with different people to know that mistakes will happen. So how do we respond to that? It's important for us to know that all of us each and every single one of us will have people places and things that will try to block us from doing the khair. And what's beautiful about this verse in the chapter of Saba' verse number 34 where Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala mentions a general rule for us and I want to mention that rule or qa'idah for rule to live by lifelong lesson is not to stop at the blockades in your path. There will be things that will try to stop you from doing the right thing. And Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala gives a general example for the lives of the prophets because they all had people that tried to stop them. Their relatives, etc. They tried to stop them. Physical abuse, verbal abuse, emotional abuse. Allah says We never sent a warner to any town but its wealthy ones said We disbelieve in the message that you have been brought. What's beautiful here is Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala is saying Look, this will always happen. وَمَا أَرْسَلْنَا فِي قَرْيَةٍ مِن نَذِيرٍ So he's saying مِن نَذِيرٍ The نَذِير is the warner. So there's not any warner except that they were there were people that said that they disbelieved in their message. So there will always be as we know nowadays I say the haters, right? There will be people that will always try to call you out for some fault or something that is not true. They may try to frame you. They will lie. They will slander. They will say things about you and especially with social media.
They can just lie and use it. You know the use that as the headline to paint a picture and they know once that picture is painted even though it's false. It's going to be hard for you to try to redeem quote-unquote yourself or to mention the true story. What's really the truth in the midst of all of this falsehood. So Allah is saying look, this is the standard. There will be people that will not like you. They will not like your message. They will say that look whoever you're coming calling to we totally disbelieve in it. But Allah is saying this to show that look I'm always there because you are warning them about what? You're warning them about goodness. You're warning them about righteousness. You're warning them about being at least the dhalim-li-nafsi, right? To be of those people and that's what so indirectly we could say comforting because Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala is showing that look this is going to happen. So whatever good that you try to do always know that you know, we were talking about people that come into Islam and when I say come into Islam it could be someone that was not Muslim or someone that was born Muslim and they're facing a trial within their family members and they're the ones that are hating against them trying to do good trying to go out and do some righteous deeds. There will be people that will always come against you and try to call you to that which is according to what they feel is right and that's why it's important as you said Shaykh to seek the Izzah from Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala and to know that that glory and that might and that honor is with Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala and you gave a beautiful khutbah I wanted to touch on what you mentioned where you said I'd rather be those people I'm not going to lie I cried when I watched that it was so beautiful man I never thought about it like that like SubhanAllah I would rather be those people than those people you know so may Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala make us of those that die in an honorable way and allow that honor to permeate through society and through time insha'Allah and who will leave that to go Allah Ibaratikusha you know SubhanAllah
being from the Ummah of Muhammad (ﷺ) comes with such honor like what an honor to just be from the Ummah of Muhammad (ﷺ) when you were talking about the levels of paradise like you know when sometimes if you're ahead on something you don't want someone else to ride your hard work but the Prophet (ﷺ) is going to be walking around on the Day of Judgment interceding for who? the major sinners of his Ummah he's going to be walking around looking for the major sinners to intercede on their behalf (ﷺ) he wants the major sinners from the Ummah to enter into Jannah with him (ﷺ) every last one of them and there's no one who is more Sabiq bil-Khairat who is further ahead in doing good than the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) and there's no one who's more Zalim li-Nafsi from the Ummah who's wronging himself than someone who's Ijtak bil-Kaba'ir who's doing the major sins and the Prophet (ﷺ) all the way in the front line is coming all the way to the back line of the Ummah and saying come in you know let him in Ya Allah let him in Ya Allah let her in Ya Allah let her in he's doing that Shafa'a and that's you know it just takes me to this and you know you mentioned that Khutbah and SubhanAllah you know what's amazing is that sometimes you like prep for something like you prep for a Khutbah and it's like I got like I didn't even know if I had my own thoughts clear that day but really man you're watching like what's happening you're like I don't want to be on the winning team I don't want to be with those Israeli soldiers I don't want to be anywhere near them right I don't want to be with these people in suits and ties that put a put a pretty face to genocide on a regular basis or you know try to try to put lipstick on a pic I don't want to be with you people right like this is truly like SubhanAllah like just you know like when you hear someone say I disassociate from you like I disassociate from you people like I don't want to be with you people these people that are in the slums in Gaza I want to be with them on the Day of Judgment you know like Alhamdulillah we're them Alhamdulillah we're not them right and that's may Allah Azza wa Jal not make us like those
zalimin in any way and the last thing that I was just thinking about like in this regard is like you know don't run away from being a Muslim the honor of being a Muslim so the honor being from Ummat Muhammad (ﷺ) like why would you yeah Muhammad why would you call yourself Mo you know what I'm saying like why would you trash your your identity of a Muslim why would you want to distance yourself from your Islam it's the greatest honor you have in your life so especially for those of us that live in in non-Muslim lands right as minorities like it's very easy to be like man like I just want to blend in I don't want to get noticed like the greatest honor is to be noticed as a Muslim to be practicing as a Muslim to be included with the Muslims I mean Allah Azza wa Jal give us that honor through Islam Ameen Ameen SubhanAllah even when Shaykh Abdullah was you know the ayah that you chose I feel it still connects back to even these ayat in Surah Fatir because right after when Allah is describing like the people of Jannah and you know having Izzah in this world like the people of Gaza who have shown us what honor is and you know it doesn't come like it comes with a price right and it comes with difficulty but SubhanAllah not only are they elevated in this world but then what's their like their statement and their feel in the next life Allah Azza wa Jal tells us like they say Alhamdulillah to the one who now all of that temporary pain and hardship and difficulty is gone and our Lord they see SubhanAllah is the most forgiving it's forgiven our mistakes and our shortcomings we tried we asked we did our best in spite of our shortcomings and he's shakur also he's the most you know appreciative and look what he has given us and then they say
All of the pain right the Nasab the something they said that one of them is like internal and the other is external so the emotional distress and the pain and the sadness of loss and then even the physical right the physical pain that we see that they've gone through all of that is Alhamdulillah it's gone and now they're left with you know not just eternal reward but that eternal Izzah you know and like you said Shaykh much better to be on that side just reminded me to be our Islam such a Prophet (ﷺ) but had these are all the alarm give her the glad tidings of a Jannah of what there's no Nasab no Wasab there's no it's it's not the internal it's not the external it's not the difficulty it's not the bickering no noise like you you're good now so it's Allah is it honors the outside hand side Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala restores the inside the outside anything about like PTSD there's no PTSD in Jannah yeah yeah that's such a that's such a big deal like it sounds so small but like you're not going to be bothered in Jannah remembering the hard times which were a part of getting you there it's not even small Shaykh you know I remember one of our teachers mentioned like if you look at the the most often mentioned reward of Jannah is that which is emotional and internal right no Hazan alright no fear like فَلَا خَوْفٌ عَلَيْهِمْ وَلَا هُمْ يَحْزَنُونَ because I mean you can have a lot of external but if it's there's no peace inside then you know and so for the people of Jannah what they have especially what we see with the people of Gaza like what they've experienced in that internal while just removing that's where we mess up the refugees not to go on this tangent but like refugees come and you think it's about giving them an
apartment putting food on there in front of them but like sometimes you do that in such a way that's that lacks dignity hmm you're actually hurting them further like yeah you know what you're out there to get your you know sort of rack up your points your charity points for yourself and you're not realizing like they need they need emotional support too and sometimes you're actually hurting them emotionally when you treat them like they're your charity case they're not your charity case they're not your charity case honor is through honoring them too because Allah Azza wa Jal teaches you to honor them so just be really careful you know SubhanAllah with these first of all everyone should be doing refugee work you have no excuse no excuse there are definitely refugees in your area you have no excuse to not be involved you need to honor them because Allah will honor you for your honoring them like Allah always talks about honoring the orphan honoring the widow right how do you honor them you know so don't don't just think about oh yeah we're gonna go pass out food tonight SubhanAllah night we're gonna go pass out some water bottles so we're gonna go drop something off like just inquiring hey you know what's your name MashaAllah you know like talking to someone like a human being I mean even the little kids I mean what the Prophet (ﷺ) he would the young girl would take his hand and just run with him and he just followed her I mean everyone I was in Turkey I guess I walked it to an orphanage you know and it was kids and one of them I went down to been down just give him sometimes and he grabbed my beard and the mom was like no no no I'm like being dragged by him by my face you know there's no there's no male influence in his life you know he's an orphan Allah you know so so I mean man that hurts because because a lot of times you see that right like I think that's like trying to like take the moment to understand the refugees like sometimes the psychology of someone that's in that that that place I always noticed that too in the refugee camps the boys when
they see a male volunteer figure that's coming to like play around or spend time they just like gravitate immediately and they want to they want to play soccer with you they want to play basketball with you they want to they want to throw anything with you they want you to run with them they want because most of them their fathers have been taken away from them may Allah honor them and allow us to honor them as well both reminded me of you know the Du'a of the Prophet (ﷺ) he would ask Allah اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ حُبَّ الْمَسَاكِينِ right right a very big difference between you know treating someone who's vulnerable right out of love versus doing it like you know like you're doing them a favor right right right right I really implore the youth like a lot of the young guys and girls that are in college they're even high school even middle school to really really go out and and help like he mentioned those refugees because you really there's a lot of emotion that you'll go through from it is just seeing that how blessed you are how blessed you are to have a mother father mother that blessing and that it's not even like you said giving them the plate making sure that you've checked the box it's rather you just went there and you see them smile and what was painful for me but it was beautiful because you know when you're leaving and then they just look and they say are you gonna leave you're gonna come back yeah you come on man they always ask if you're coming oh man they always ask you that's that's SubhanAllah they always ask you will never go to a refugee camp and spend time people except they ask you when you're coming back and you know I remember in particular how about the amputee center in Qatar where the kids they actually restricted SubhanAllah they actually restricted volunteers not because they said if you're gonna commit to being a volunteer here you have to come regularly because you're gonna cause them more separation anxiety you just show up for a few days and then leave so they actually require the volunteers
there's to sign up for several months right and to come and I was like that's the first time I heard that but it should be implemented across the board yeah because you actually hurt them more sometimes you just come in and then you're gone right so may Allah allow us to be there for our people also shout out to Mohsen as well and you're doing work with Mohsen JazakAllah khair they're always Mohsen of course Muslims understanding helping with special education needs another vital vital organization out there and there are people with special needs in your community that are also disappearing so make sure that you're paying attention to them insha'Allah and supporting the organizations like Mohsen that are that are trying to do so that's like a amazing to have you on insha'Allah we'll see you all tomorrow
