Faith

This episode of 'Allah's Names: The Name I Need' explores three deeply interconnected names of Allah: As-Subbooh (the utterly perfect beyond all imperfection), Al-Quddus (the entirely pure who purifies what He wills), and As-Salam (the one who is peace Himself and the source of all peace). The lecture explains that scholars identify three sources of peace: knowing Allah in His perfection, trusting His perfect plan, and remembering His perfect reward in the hereafter. The angels' response to the announcement of Adam's khilafah is examined, showing how tasbih (declaring Allah free of imperfection) and taqdis (declaring Allah pure) are acts of worship that honor As-Subbooh and Al-Quddus. The story of Yunus (عليه السلام) illustrates how tasbih — saying 'La ilaha illa anta, Subhanaka, inni kuntu min ad-dhalimin' — was the very act that saved him from the belly of the whale. Regarding Al-Quddus, the lecture draws on the wisdom of Salman al-Farsi (رضي الله عنه), who taught that it is not a holy place that makes a person holy, but rather their deeds. Physical purity through wudu and spiritual purity through sincere worship are both necessary to approach Al-Quddus. As-Salam is described as the unlimited source of peace who greets believers through angels on Laylat al-Qadr, and who will personally greet the people of Jannah with 'Salamun qawlan min Rabbin Rahim' [Ya-Sin 36:58]. The prayer itself is presented as a microcosm of this journey — from declaring 'Subboohun Quddus' in ruku' and sujud, to spreading salam at its conclusion. The ultimate message is that believers are called not merely to receive peace, but to embody and spread it, so that when they enter Dar as-Salam, they will be returning to it rather than encountering it for the first time.

This episode of 'Allah's Names: The Name I Need' opens with a poignant dramatic scene between two men — a Palestinian man struggling with business failure, grief, and a sense of being cursed, and his Sudanese neighbor Rahim, who shares his own journey of self-erasure and eventual self-acceptance after the loss of his daughter Sandra. Rahim's testimony about how Allah never left him serves as a bridge into a deep theological reflection on four of Allah's names: Al-Basir (the All-Seeing), Ash-Shahid (the Ever-Present Witness), Ar-Raqib (the Ever-Watchful), and As-Satir (the Concealer). Al-Basir is described as the one who sees beyond surfaces, through layers of darkness — just as He saw and heard Yunus (عليه السلام) في ظلمة الليل وظلمة البحر وظلمة بطن الحوت (in the darkness of the night, the sea, and the belly of the whale). Ash-Shahid is the witness who not only observes but testifies, validating unseen labor, patience, and sacrifice — and honoring this ummah by making them witnesses for the prophets on the Day of Judgment. Ar-Raqib is the ever-watchful who observes even our thoughts before they become actions, and the concept of muraqaba (spiritual vigilance) is explored through Ibn al-Jawzi's stages of sin and the practice of repeating 'Allahu ma'i, Allahu shahidi, Allahu nadhirun ilayya.' Finally, As-Satir is the concealer who covers sins from people while calling the heart back to repentance, and believers are encouraged to embody this quality by covering the faults of others rather than exposing them. The episode closes with a series of heartfelt du'as addressed to each of these four names.
