Angels In Their Presence | Season 2

22 / 29

Handala ibn Abi Amr (ra) fought in the Battle of Uhud, and he died only a day after his wedding night. He was another Companion who received a great blessing in death: not just the presence of angels, but angels who performed his ghusl. For this honor, he was called Ghaseel al Malaa’ika, the one who was washed by the angels.

Some of the most wicked people had some of the most righteous children. And we talked about Durra radiAllahu anha, bint Abi Lahab. And what's SubhanAllah, very beautiful when you read about Medina, is that the children of the chief hypocrite, Abdullah ibn Ubaid bin Sarul, his children were righteous Muslims. His children were devoted followers of the Prophet SallAllahu Alaihi Wasallam. So here you have Abdullah ibn Ubaid bin Sarul, and he is trying to do everything in his power to dismantle the Ummah of the Prophet SallAllahu Alaihi Wasallam, to undermine the Prophet SallAllahu Alaihi Wasallam, to stop Islam, all for his seat of power. Right. And in his own home, Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala brought guidance to his children. And so his daughter is named Jamila, Jamila bint Abdullah ibn Ubaid bin Sarul. And his daughter is married to a man by the name of Hamdala radiAllahu ta'ala anhu, Ibn Abi Amr, Hamdala ibn Abi Amr. Now this Hamdala is not the same as the Hamdala that is in the famous narration about the angel shaking your hands in the street. Okay, so this is a different Hamdala radiAllahu ta'ala anhu. Hamdala was a young man in Medina who embraced Islam and his father is not like the father of Jabir. Right. So the father of Jabir, righteous companion, elderly companion of the Prophet SallAllahu Alaihi Wasallam, his father actually went to Mecca to join the enemies of the Prophet SallAllahu Alaihi Wasallam. So Abi Amr went to Mecca to help the kuffar of Mecca against his own people in Medina because of his hatred of faith. Hamdala radiAllahu ta'ala anhu instead became a righteous Muslim. And imagine the situation of this young man. His wedding day was the day before Uhud. He got married the day before the battle of Uhud. To who?
To the chief, the daughter of the chief of the hypocrites, who is cutting up the army of the Prophet SallAllahu Alaihi Wasallam, you know, bringing the hypocrites back to Medina, trying to leave the Prophet SallAllahu Alaihi Wasallam and the believers on their own to be killed in the battle of Uhud. The night before he gets married to Jamila, the daughter of Abdullah ibn Ubayy ibn Salul. Now, the day of Uhud comes, he is immediately out the door when he hears the call to come to the battlefield. So he has his wedding night. He comes straight to the battlefield and he lines up where the Prophet SallAllahu Alaihi Wasallam tells him to line up. And Hamdallah is not, you know, doing these calculations in his mind, like, you know, let me, let me sit this one out. I just got married. Let me kind of stay in the back here. Hamdallah is ambitious. He looks to the heads of the enemies that are coming forward and he sees at the head of them is Abu Sufyan. Right. Abu Sufyan is the most senior person now on the other side. And Hamdallah decides he's going to pursue Abu Sufyan on the day of Uhud. So as the battle starts, Hamdallah goes forward and he's able to even knock Abu Sufyan off of his horse. Now, SubhanAllah, mercy to Abu Sufyan that Allah Subh'anaHu Wa Ta-A'la would instead bless him with guidance later on in his life and he would die fighting on the side of the Muslims. But he was about to die right there. Hamdallah knocks him off of his horse. And as Hamdallah is about to strike him, he had no horse. He was a foot soldier. He got him off of his horse. As he's about to strike him, a man by the name of Shaddad ibn Aswad comes to him and says, comes to him and stabs him from behind. OK, so Hamdallah dies literally the day after his wedding night. Now, as the Prophet SallAllahu Alaihi Wasallam and the companions are going through the corpses on the day of Uhud, this man has a very interesting situation. He is soaked in water and they're saying to the Prophet SallAllahu Alaihi Wasallam, Ya Rasulullah, we don't even have water to drink. We have no water.
But Hamdallah radiAllahu ta'ala Anhu looks like he just took a bath. This makes no sense to us whatsoever. You know, we're seeing mutilated bodies. We're seeing all these different things. But Hamdallah radiAllahu ta'ala Anhu looks like he just took a bath. And the Prophet SallAllahu Alaihi Wasallam said, SubhanAllah, Tughassiluhul malaika ala tibaqin min fidda bayna as-sama'i wal-ardi That he is being washed by the angels between the heavens and the earth. His ghusl is being done by the malaika. The angels are bathing your companion on this special tub between the heavens and the earth. So even the Prophet SallAllahu Alaihi Wasallam is amazed by this sight. And Rasulullah SallAllahu Alaihi Wasallam says, ask his family what happened. And they go to Jameela and they say that SubhanAllah, it was the wedding night and they were intimate. And when he heard the call in the morning, he was so quick to the battlefield that he didn't even do ghusl. He didn't take his shower in the morning to answer the call of the Prophet SallAllahu Alaihi Wasallam quickly. And Allah Subhanahu wa ta'ala instead made it so that the angels were doing his ghusl. And so he becomes known as famously ghaseel al-malaika. His nickname amongst the sahaba is ghaseel al-malaika, the one who was washed by the angels. On top of that, from that one night that he was with his wife, Allah Subhanahu wa ta'ala blessed him with a son. So she realizes sometime after Uhud that she's pregnant and she gives birth to his one son that would survive him. From SubhanAllah, this one night of marriage and she names him Abdullah and Abdullah grows up being known as ibn al-ghaseel, the son of the one who was washed, the son of the one who was washed by the angels. And SubhanAllah on top of that, actually, if you keep going forward into the history, you'll find that Abdullah lives long enough to also become a mujahid fi sabi'illah. And he fights alongside al-Husayn radiAllahu ta'ala anhu and he was also martyred by Yazid ibn Muawiyah.
So his son even goes forward and he dies in a very similar fate. He dies as a martyr. So you see this incident and the scholars say, you know, it's not just the fact that ghusl was done for him as a virtue. It's that Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala sends these angels to take care of things that only Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala knows about. Right. Only Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala knew that he was in a state of janaba still and his wife who was at home. And Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala sends the angels to wash him radiAllahu ta'ala anhu and to honor him. And this is also a part of anything, literally anything that you give up for the sake of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala in this dunya, Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala will compensate it more generously in the hereafter.
