Angels In Their Presence | Season 2
17 / 29
Abu Bakr (ra) and Ali (ra) held a special status in the early days of Islam. Abu Bakr (ra) was the first man to embrace Islam and a close lifelong friend of the Prophet ﷺ, who declared that Abu Bakr (ra) was “like my hearing.” Ali (ra) was the first boy to accept Islam, and he staunchly bore the banner of Islam in battle. Due to their respected status, they were sometimes accompanied by two similarly respected angels, Jibreel (as) and Mika’eel (as).

I want to talk about some of the wisdoms of the people that were specifically honored. All of the veterans of Badr are honored and that will just be, you know, a chance for us to marvel at the amount of angels that showed up on the day of Badr and the way that Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala honored the Muslims on the day of Badr with all those angels. But people that Allah chose to honor specifically. And it starts off with Abu Bakr and Ali radiAllahu ta'ala anhuma. Abu Bakr radiAllahu anhu, the first man to embrace Islam. Ali radiAllahu ta'ala anhu, the first boy to embrace Islam. And of course, two of the greatest companions of the Prophet salAllahu alayhi wa sallam. And Rasulullah salAllahu alayhi wa sallam looks at them on the day of Badr and he says ma ahadikumma Jibreel, one of you has with you right now Jibreel, wa ma'al akhar Mika'il, and the other one has Mika'il, and Israfil malakun azeem. Israfil is a great angel. yashhadu alqital, aw yashhadu al-saf. He is present in the lines amongst the Muslims right now. So before we even start the battle, I want you to know that one of you has Jibreel alayhi salam, the other one has Mika'il alayhi salam, and Israfil alayhi salam is standing amongst the Muslims. So even these three angels are not missing in any way the battle of Badr. They are the best of the angels and the best of the angels as a whole are the angels that participated on the day of Badr. Now Abu Bakr and Ali radiAllahu ta'ala anhuma having Jibreel and Mika'il is significant. And we know about Jibreel alayhi salam, but what is the role of Mika'il alayhi salam other than his virtue?
And the ulama say that the narrations as a whole suggest that Mika'il alayhi salam is the angel from whom Allah subhanahu wa'ta'ala brings rain and wind and so vegetation. So al-matar, al-reeh and things of that sort, the rain, the wind, and some of the mercy that comes as a result of that. And you'll notice in Badr, in the battle of Badr, before the battle started, Allah subhanahu wa'ta'ala destroyed the army or rather he made it very difficult on the other side with what? Al-matar, with rain, right? It was too wet for them. And so they struggled to actually make it to the battlefield of Badr. The Muslims were already settled there before the army on the other side even made it. And then in al-ahzab, right? In the battle of khandaq, al-ahzab, Allah subhanahu wa'ta'ala sent upon them al-reeh, a strong wind. And so you have Jibreel alayhi salam, who is of course the chief of the mala'ika, the imam of the angels, and the strongest of the angels, and you have Mikael alayhi salam, and the apparent presence of both of them is showing in the way that these battles are playing out. So it is the fadl, the virtue, the Prophet salallahu alayhi wasalam was narrated to have said that my two ministers, my two wazirs from ahl al-sama'a, from the heavens, the inhabitants of the heavens are Jibreel and Mikael, wa min ahl al-ard and from the inhabitants of the earth, Abu Bakr and Umar radiyaAllahu ta'ala anhuma. And the Prophet salallahu alayhi wasalam one time said about Abu Bakr and Umar, may Allah be pleased with them, he said, these two are like as-sam'u wal-basr. These two to me are like my hearing and my seeing. So that was the way that the Prophet salallahu alayhi wasalam praised them and compared them in that sense to Jibreel alayhi salam and Mikael alayhi salam. However, I want to go now to the eulogy of al-Hassan ibn Ali radiyaAllahu ta'ala anhuma when Ali radiyaAllahu anhum passed away. Al-Hassan, the grandson of the Prophet salallahu alayhi wasalam, the son of Ali and Fatima, may Allah be pleased with them.
Someone very beloved and close to the Prophet salallahu alayhi wasalam is speaking after the martyrdom of Sayyidina Ali radiyaAllahu ta'ala anhum. And listen to what he says. He said, laqad faraqakum rajrun bil-ams lam yasbiqhu al-awwaluna bi-ilmin wala yudrikhu al-akharun. The people that have passed were not able to match him in his knowledge, nor were those who came after able to catch up to him. So he has surpassed those that have come before him and he surpasses those that come after him. And he says, kana rasoolAllahi salallahu alayhi wasalam yaba'athuhu bil-raya. The Prophet salallahu alayhi wasalam used to send Ali radiyaAllahu ta'ala anhu with the banner. Jibreelu an yameenihi wa Mika'ilu an shimalihi. Jibreel was on his right, Mika'il was on his left. So the imagery here is very powerful. That Ali radiyaAllahu anhu would be the one to go forward with the banner and Jibreel alayhi wasalam would be on his right and Mika'il alayhi wasalam on his left. And some of the ulama say this is Khaibar, right? And the Prophet salallahu alayhi wasalam gave the banner to Ali in Khaibar, you know, he said that I'm going to give the banner to a man who loves Allah and his messenger and who is beloved by Allah and his messenger salallahu alayhi wasalam. And everyone wanted to be that man. And it was Ali radiyaAllahu ta'ala anhu. So as Ali went forth, imagine Ali radiyaAllahu anhu moving forward and he has on his right Jibreel alayhi wasalam and he has Mika'il alayhi wasalam on his left. And Hasan radiyaAllahu ta'ala anhu says, la yansarifu hatta yuftaha lahu and he would not come back. When the Prophet salallahu alayhi wasalam would send my father out with a banner, Jibreel on his right and Mika'il on his left. My father would not return back until Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala gave him victory. He was absolutely relentless.
And part of that was the aid that Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala gave to him with Jibreel alayhi wasalam, the chief of the angels, one of the two ministers of the Prophet salallahu alayhi wasalam, of the inhabitants of the heavens on his right side and Mika'il alayhi wasalam on his left side. The other of the two ministers of the Prophet salallahu alayhi wasalam from the inhabitants of the heavens. And this was from the righteousness of Ali radiyaAllahu anhu and his virtues and also the virtue of his action and seeking victory, not for any personal glory, but only for the sake of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala.
