Your Duas Can Change The Worlds | The Other Side: Barzakh and Beyond Ep. 26

March 24, 2025Dr. Omar Suleiman

Just because you don’t see it doesn’t mean it’s not working. Your du’a can strengthen the feet of the oppressed, ease a soul in the grave, or even shift history itself. The martyrs of Gaza may not have seen the victory they set in motion, just as Sumayya (ra) never saw Mecca embrace Islam. But in the Barzakh, they may be greeted with news of their impact.

And what about your loved ones who have passed? The Prophet ﷺ said du’a reaches them like gifts of light, easing burdens and raising ranks.

If you knew how much your du’a mattered, would you ever stop making it?

NOTE: All depictions of Barzakh are purely conceptual and only vocals were used in the making of the soundtrack.

  1. The Prophet ﷺ said: “Among the deeds and good works that continue to benefit a believer after death are knowledge he taught and spread, a righteous child he leaves behind, a mushaf (copy of the Qur’an) he bequeaths, a masjid he builds, a house he constructs for stranded travelers, a water source he provides, or charity he gives from his wealth in his lifetime while in good health. These will continue to reach him after his death.” [Sunan Ibn Majah #242]
  2. Al Munthiri (ra) said: “Some scholars said that a person's deeds cease with his death. However, these particular acts continue due to the deceased being the direct cause for their existence.” [Abadi, ‘Awn al-Ma’bud]
  3. Ya’qub ibn Saleh al-Abyari narrated that a righteous man saw his deceased father in a dream and his father said, “My son, why have you stopped sending us your gifts?” The son replied, “Father, do the dead recognize the gifts of the living?” The father said, “My son, if not for the living, the dead would be destroyed.” [Ibn Rajab, Ahwal al-Quboor]
  4. Sufyan ibn Uyaynah said: “It used to be said, ‘The dead are in greater need of prayers (du’a) than the living are of food.’” [Ibn Rajab, Ahwal al-Quboor]
  5. Ahmad ibn Yahya narrated that one of his companions said to him: “My brother passed away, and then I saw him in a dream. I asked him, ‘What condition were you in when you were placed in your grave?’ He replied, ‘A person came to me holding a torch, and had it not been for the du’a of one of you, he would have set me on fire.’” [Ibn al-Qayyim, Kitab ar-Ruh]
  6.  Amr ibn Jarir said: “When someone supplicates for his deceased brother, an angel brings the supplication to his grave and says, ‘O occupant of the grave, this is a gift from a brother who cares about you.’”  [Ibn al-Qayyim, Kitab ar-Ruh]
  7. Ibn Abi Dunya narrated that one of the salaf said: “I saw my brother in a dream after his death, and I asked him, ‘Does the supplication of the living reach you?’ He replied, ‘Yes, by Allah! It comes fluttering like light, and then we wear it.’”  [Ibn al-Qayyim, Kitab ar-Ruh]
  8. Bashar ibn Ghalib said: “I saw Rabi'ah in my dream, and I used to make a lot of du’a for her. She said to me, ‘O Bashar ibn Ghalib, your gifts come to us on trays of light, wrapped in silk handkerchiefs.’ I asked, ‘How is that?’ She replied, ‘This is how the du’a of the living believers reach the dead when they pray for them and their supplications are answered. The prayer is placed on trays of light, wrapped in silk handkerchiefs, and then it is brought to the one who was prayed for among the deceased, and it is said, ‘This is a gift from so-and-so to you.’”   [Al-Bayhaqi, Shu’ab al-Iman]
