Episode 2: Pour Upon Us Patience | Conversing with God
What does it mean to be patient? Sh. Omar Husain recalls the du’a of David when he went up against Goliath and how we can tackle the challenges in our life with patience and grace.
Our Lord, pour upon us patience, and plant firmly our feet, and give us victory over the disbelieving people.
رَبَّنَا أَفْرِغْ عَلَيْنَا صَبْرًا وَثَبِّتْ أَقْدَامَنَا وَانْصُرْنَا عَلَى الْقَوْمِ الْكَافِرِينَ

Allah Subh'anaHu Wa Ta-A'la gives us a du'a in the Qur'an from the believers with Dawood Alayhi As-Salaatu Was-Salam when they go up against Goliath or Jalut. Rabbana afrigalayna sabran wa thabbit aqadamana wa ansurna ala alqawm alkaafireen Oh Allah, pour upon us patience and make our feet firm and steadfast and give us victory over those that disbelieve. So the first thing we learn from this is that when we have a challenge ahead of us, we don't run from it. We don't become pessimistic and spread that pessimism to everybody around us. We don't give up. Rather, we make du'a to Allah Subh'anaHu Wa Ta-A'la and we move on with the plan just as Dawood and his forces did here. So, rabbana afrigalayna sabran Oh Allah, literally shower upon us or pour upon us patience. What is patience? The Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam described what patience is. Now, this word sabr that's used, it's more than just patience. We're just using that for sake of translation. It's more like just control of self. So what does patience mean? That would really be helpful to know. The Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam one time he passed behind a woman and she was grieving the death of someone. And he said to her, have taqwa of Allah wasbiri and be patient. And she kind of gave an expression to him like kind of go away. Like you don't understand my pain. Now, obviously she didn't know it was the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam. Now, someone informed her after she finished that that was the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam that said that.
So she went to see him and she said, I didn't know it was you. I would not have reacted in the same way. And that's when the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam told us what patience is. He said, innama sabru AAinda sadmatil oola Verily patience is at the sign of the first shock. The first thing that happens that is tragic. What is our reaction? When you first heard of the job loss or the death of a loved one or a disaster somewhere, what was the initial reaction? Was it cursing? Was it breaking something? Was it yelling at someone? That initial reaction tells us whether we are patient or not. And it's a great way to check. Now, if we are not kind of where we should be, the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam gave us advice because being impatient is oftentimes linked to becoming angry and losing our cool. And so he gave us some advice. One of these pieces of advice is seeking refuge from Shaitaan. So saying, a'udhu billahi minash shaitaanir rajim It calms us down. The second is literally calming us down by making wudu. So we make wudu and you know, when you get angry, you kind of get heated, right? So you calm yourself down by making wudu. The other thing that the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam told us is simply to change positions. So change positions. If you're in someone's face and losing your patience and really getting upset, sit down. If you're sitting down and getting really upset, stand up. Go somewhere else, change positions because that few seconds is all it takes to diffuse the anger and prevent us from possibly a lifetime of regret because of what we may have said. So valuable is patience that Allah Subh'anaHu Wa Ta-A'la said, innama yuwaffas sabiroona ajrahum bi ghayri hisab
That Allah rewards the patient without any reckoning. Meaning on the day of judgment, as the scholars of Tafsir mention, they will have no scales of good deeds and bad deeds because Allah has forgiven them completely. They don't have to go through all the trials and tribulations of the day of judgment. That's a massive, massive reward. And it is for those who practice patience. And so we're asking Allah Subh'anaHu Wa Ta-A'la in this du'a to pour on us patience. And then what? Make us firm on that patience. So when we face a difficulty, we need patience, but we also need to follow the plan and remain firm in it. wathabbit aqadamana wansurna AAala alqawmi alkaafireena And then grant us victory over those who disbelieve or mock our religion or spread false beliefs about Islam because ultimately, victory is not gonna come by being patient and having a great plan. That's only part of it. Ultimately, it comes from Allah Subh'anaHu Wa Ta-A'la and through His mercy and through His help.
