The Other Side Series Live Q&A with Dr. Omar Suleiman

Are the dead actually watching over us or do our deeds reach them? Are we only in the bodies of birds, or do we take our human form? If you’ve been watching The Other Side, you might have questions—Dr. Omar Suleiman answers many of them in this live Q&A on Yaqeen’s Ramadan series, providing clarity and deeper insight into what happens in the Barzakh and beyond.

00:00As-Salamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh, everyone. Bismillah, al-Hamdu lillah, wa as-Salamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.
00:13So we're live, Alhamdulillah, on YouTube and we're live on Instagram as well. In that order, so if you see me pointing to this camera, you're on YouTube. If you see me pointing to that camera, you're on Instagram. Alhamdulillah, I pray that you're having a blessed Ramadan.
00:27And I pray that Allah, Subhanahu wa Ta'ala, is filling your heart with the Qur'an. That you are finding that your deeds are truly illuminating your path. And that you are fully absorbing the true meaning of the siyam, of this fasting.
00:41Allahumma Ameen. So I wanted to, insha'Allah Ta'ala, do this live to basically talk about the Ramadan series as it is now. So the first half of the Ramadan series, then insha'Allah Ta'ala, will kind of give you a preview as to what the next half is going to look like.
00:54But at the same time, take some questions, insha'Allah Ta'ala. I know there's a lot of questions about this series in particular. Probably more so than any series in the past. So I'm just going to say first and foremost, for those of you that ask for references:
01:06if you watch our videos on the website itself, meaning if you go to yaqeeninstitute.org and you go to a video itself under the Watch tab, the references are actually listed per video. So if you are looking for a reference for a particular point that's been made,
01:20it's all there, insha'Allah Ta'ala, as well as the necessary clarifications about a narration or things of that sort. So go to the website, insha'Allah Ta'ala, when you need to get a reference from a video,
01:32and just read right under the video— right under that disclaimer that tells you that we are using vocals only. Since that's also like half the questions on every video, I wanted to, insha'Allah Ta'ala, just start off
01:45by giving you a little bit of a brief as to where we've been so far on this series and where we're going. So this series is different from a series that I did a few years ago called "For Those Left Behind," which was more just guidance on grief and coping
01:59and was meant for people who have obviously lost their loved ones. May Allah have mercy on their loved ones and make it easy for them. Allahumma Ameen. And it was meant to give them just very practical guidance, straightforward guidance on how to cope
02:13and how to best understand the rituals surrounding death and what follows. In this one, you are the subject matter. So at the end of the day, you're the soul that's transitioning into the Barzakh. And so this is going to actually be about you
02:26taking the next step in your journey with Allah, Subhanahu wa Ta'ala. So the way that I structured the series was that the first ten: you are looking into the Barzakh from the outside. So it's someone who is seeing dreams,
02:40someone who's seeing the grave, but doesn't yet understand the full inner workings of what's happening in the Barzakh. And then the second ten, you actually go in there, and you are the subject matter. If you realize, it's talking about you
02:54and what's happening with you, and who you're meeting, and what's happening there. This series, subhanAllah, the last ten of this series are extremely special, because the middle ten here are about your deeds— are about what your deeds have earned you.
03:08So we're going to go into the punishment of the grave, we're going to go into what saves you in the grave. But I want you to think of it this way: that you're in this dunya in the first part of the series trying to understand what's happening, having interactions with the Barzakh. And the second part of the series,
03:22you are alone with your deeds at some point. And so we talk about your deeds quite a bit. So the next few episodes are actually going to be about, again, your deeds, the punishment of the grave, as well as what saves you in the grave. The last ten is the theme of salvation,
03:36and so it's about reunions, it's about relief, it's about finding, you know, ease in the grave after the initial tests, after the purifications that come with the deeds. It's about many of those things that relate to Laylat al-Qadr
03:50and a lot of the extra acts of devotion that you're doing. So it's very important that you stay the course for this entire series, bi'idhn Allah Ta'ala. I can't stress that enough, because usually there's a steady drop in terms of viewership. But it all comes full circle,
04:04and in fact, many of the questions that people have been asking, they get answered in later episodes of the series. Now, obviously, when it comes to the series, we have cut out quite a bit. You know, subhanAllah,
04:18the episodes are longer before, but sometimes it's just too much to pack into a single episode. So some of it gets edited out, and sometimes with that edit of removing some of the episode, something that might have been a little bit more clarifying
04:32on a particular issue gets removed. And so this is an opportunity to kind of go through those questions, insha'Allah Ta'ala, and ask those questions. Another thing I'm gonna say is that the same time next week, insha'Allah, I'm gonna do another live where I'm gonna go through everything you need to know
04:46about the last 10 nights. Bid'ah. Insha'Allah. And so that will be something to really prepare you, Insha'Allah, for the last ten. So again, same time as now, show up, Insha'Allah Ta'ala. We'll put out the post, but from now, Insha'Allah Ta'ala, do put a note
05:00on your calendar to come at the same time: 3 p.m. Central Time, Insha'Allah Ta'ala, next week. And we'll go through sort of a full guide of how to prep for the last ten nights, Insha'Allah. Insha'Allah Ta'ala. And the last thing I'm gonna say: share the episodes,
05:14Insha'Allah Ta'ala. So we did notice, as expected, especially with episodes 9 and 10, where we got into Gaza and a lot of Gaza content, that there was some sort of a shadow ban. And so it's important for you to share with as many people as you can and subscribe
05:28if you're not subscribed. We need you to subscribe. And in fact, I'm gonna put a personal challenge to everybody that's here. So I don't know how many thousands are here right now between Instagram and YouTube, but it's at least a couple thousand
05:42between the two. Alhamdulillah, we are at 1.95 million subscribers. So we just need, Insha'Allah Ta'ala, 50,000 more subscribers to hit 2 million subscribers, Insha'Allah Ta'ala. Share with as many people as you can. Alright.
05:56So make sure you're subscribed. If you're on Instagram and you're not subscribed to Yaqeen on YouTube, make sure you go ahead and you subscribe, Insha'Allah. And also, go ahead, Insha'Allah Ta'ala, and subscribe if you're on any platform and share with as many people
06:10as you possibly can. Alright. So again, we're in the middle ten of the series— the middle ten of the month— and so it's going to be going into you being alone with your deeds at this point
06:24in the grave and what your deeds have earned you in the grave. And then the last ten, Insha'Allah Ta'ala, will go to the theme of salvation. I'm gonna go ahead, Insha'Allah Ta'ala. I'm gonna start with questions, so I'm gonna go with YouTube first. So please do put your questions
06:38on YouTube, Insha'Allah Ta'ala, and Instagram as well. I'll try my best to see them. Those questions also, Insha'Allah. The first question is... Where's the first question
06:52about people, dead people, watching over you? Alright. I'll just address the question, Insha'Allah Ta'ala. So, the first question, which was probably the most asked question, was: Are the dead
07:06actually watching over us? Or are our deeds— sorry, let me repeat that— are the dead actually watching over us, or are our deeds being presented to them? And this is a very important point,
07:20Insha'Allah Ta'ala, and I've clarified this in the "For Those Left Behind" series, number one, in the beginning here of the series. as I said the dead can't benefit us and so at the end of the day what reaches them of our news and
07:34their response to that is merely their expression and as you would have seen when they say Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un as I mentioned in the last episode or if they say O Allah, let them be guided these are expressions at that point but they can't actually benefit us that's number one
07:48number two when the Prophet (ﷺ) says that the deeds are presented to your close relatives there is only one way that we've established that connection and that is that when someone passes away as you'll see in episode 13
08:02and this is going to be even further clarified as we go along your dead loved ones ask about you so they ask those that have died between you and them about what happened with you afterwards and so they're speaking to your overall public deeds
08:16what you've done so let's say for example you memorize the Qur'an between the time that they passed away and you passed away and someone conveys that news to them or you committed a really nasty sin
08:30or you got involved in something terrible so we only have evidence for that established connection here of the conveying of the news from the dead relatives in between you and them now the overall presentation of deeds to them
08:44that the Prophet (ﷺ) mentions could it mean perhaps that there is some other way that they're informed at some point of something that has happened with you or something that's been done of course you can't rule it out but I'm saying the only established way are people that are carrying
08:58the news between you and them but the hadith of the Prophet (ﷺ) the authentic hadith that your deeds are presented to them how did the Sahaba act upon this? we have one narration from Abu Darda (radiyallahu 'anhu)
09:12who was the brother of Abdullah ibn Rawaha (radiyallahu 'anhu) he was paired off with Abdullah ibn Rawaha after Abdullah ibn Rawaha (radiyallahu 'anhu) passed away Abu Darda (radiyallahu 'anhu) used to say O Allah, I seek refuge in you from doing
09:26a deed that would humiliate me in front of Abdullah ibn Rawaha so certainly there was the sense and I mentioned some of the narrations there in Ibn al-Qayyim Allah mentions other narrations in Kitab al-Ruh there is a sense of the very first
09:40that you should be shy of is Allah, 'azza wa jall and Allah sees you secret private public at all times and that is the ultimate sight that you should concern yourself with and then every sight
09:54afterwards is only as relevant as how much it's connected to Allah, 'azza wa jall so our news should be to those between us between us and them if they're righteous people then
10:08obviously there's a sense of haya there's a sense of shyness that comes with that as well and so since it's established from Abu Darda, radiallahu ta'ala anhu in that regard about
10:22Abdullah ibn Rawaha radiallahu ta'ala anhu and the other narrations from the Salaf in that regard this connects us to Allah 'azza wa jall and Allah 'azza wa jall has
10:36conveyed to them what he wills it's also not like they have access to your innermost secrets and private deeds right
10:50so you would take the general principle of sitr on the day of judgment that Allah 'azza wa jall has conveyed to them and Allah
11:04knows best we don't have anything that's certain in terms of a line beyond the one that's been established through other narrations Jazakum Allahu

21:06Allahu khayran It could be a message that's being sent to you again that they're okay, and there's a consolation here. That's being given to you that Alhamdulillah, they're doing well. Especially if you're seeing them in a good state, but could there be a risala, could there be a message? If someone you know, for example, if you're seeing a dead one that's prompting you to give charity, it could mean one of two things. It could mean give charity on their behalf, or it could mean that there is a perceived naqṣ, a perceived deficiency on your part. For, from, in terms of giving charity, and so that would be depending upon who you are
21:20in that regard, and so the dreams would have different meanings accordingly. Again, I'm waiting on YouTube, insha'Allah ta'ala. So just brothers and sisters in the background, insha'Allah if you can refresh some of the questions in the chat, insha'Allah.
21:33So I'm just looking at Instagram right now. Do those with disabilities face pain in the Barzakh? No, those who the pen is lifted for are at ease.
21:48Regardless, bismillah ta'ala, through all different states they can't be punished for what they weren't accountable for in the first place, of course. This is if the disability is one that which the questioner I think
22:02seems to indicate. Someone who's not accountable for their deeds in the first place, and of course, Allah would see them through all of their different difficulties. Okay, I'm looking in the chat here.
22:20Does everyone, believer or disbeliever, experience the squeeze of the grave? Is it not supposed to be part of the punishment? Yes, the Prophet (ﷺ) said everyone experiences the squeeze of the grave, but the squeeze could be, you know, a hug—
22:35a tight embrace—and then an easy labor, or it could be a difficult one. Again, where the ribs could be crushed and it could be extremely suffocating and for a long time and part of punishment.
22:46So there's the inevitable squeeze of the grave that even, you know, the Again, the Prophet (ﷺ) said Sa'd ibn Mu'adh, who was so righteous that the Throne of Allah shook when he died,
22:57and out of joy of receiving the soul of Sa'd to its rightful place in a chandelier— but even Sa'd (raḍiyallāhu 'anhu) had labor, right?
23:09And so there is the inevitable, which is not meant to be a punishment, but it's just part of the process. And then there is the punishment, right? So for some, the squeeze of the grave will be increased and intensified as a form of punishment.
23:24For others, it is just part of an inevitable process. All right, I'm gonna go to Instagram. Next question over here.
23:42Where do scary dreams come from? Episode four. Well, scary dreams don't come from episode four, but watch episode four, insha'Allah. So scary dreams are from the Shaytan, and they're meant to, you know, fool
23:55you. They're meant to scare you and to cause you fear, and the Prophet (ﷺ) taught us to not seek the interpretation of bad dreams, but instead to seek refuge in Allah from them.
24:12All right, I'm trying to balance things. Please keep going, insha'Allah on our side here.
24:27It's much—a lot. It's a lot of questions. I'm just trying to catch from both sides. Questions. So
24:47All right, very good question here. Will a believer who died during Ramadan go to Jannah because the gates of Hell are closed in Ramadan? It's not assured.
24:59The hadith of the Prophet (ﷺ) that the gates of Jannah are flung open and the gates of Hellfire are shut and the shayatin are chained away refers to the intense mercy of Allah (ʿazza wa jall) in this month.
25:12So if a person dies in Ramadan, you would hope mercy for them in an overall season of mercy, in a time of mercy. And some of the scholars made analogies, for example, to the Prophet (ﷺ) mentioning whoever dies on the day and night of Friday
25:27would not be punished in the grave. So there's a beauty there to dying on the day and night of Jumu'ah. So Thursday night, if you were to pass away, or Friday before Maghrib, you would hope that you're protected from the punishment of the grave.
25:41But again, there are wicked people that still have to pay their debts. So these hadiths cannot be taken in generalities, and some of the scholars said, "Well, maybe because the day of Friday is a great day and Ramadan perhaps might have some effect, being a great month.
25:55But at the same time, there isn't anything to confirm that. So we can't say for sure that a person who dies in Ramadan will go to Jannah.
26:07This is a great question, masha'Allah. That's actually one. By the way, I'm gonna say if you haven't been using the discussion guides for the series, you're missing out. It truly enhances the series, so do it with a group of
26:22family, friends, online, whatever it is. But masha'Allah, the team put out the discussion guides that you could download from the website. Personally, Alhamdulillah, as a family, we've been doing them, Alhamdulillah. But I mean, this was actually the question that I got today
26:35right before jumping on the live. My daughter asked this question: "Does a person get to know instantly after death what their fate in the afterlife will be?" So you go to the initial narration about
26:49Uthman when he was going to the graves. And Uthman would weep at the graves, and he would say that this is the first station, as the Prophet (ﷺ) said. And so if this is good, everything after will be good,
27:01and if this is bad, everything after will be bad. So you go to that narration, and the idea is that certainly, from the moment that you know, the soul is leaving the body, the types of angels that appear to you
27:15to the rapid succession then of angels to either have your name written in 'Illiyyīn or as-Sijjīl. To what happens when you answer the questions or fail to answer the questions in the grave May Allah grant us the best. Allahumma ameen
27:31About who is your Lord? What is your religion? Who is your Prophet? All of that is an indication of what comes next and so
27:44Certainly there's an assurance now. The Day of Judgment is such a jarring experience that when a person wakes up from their grave
27:59it's like again all over again. And so you have to be put at ease once again Okay, and so that's why there are again two angels, Sa'iqun wa Shaheed
28:10Just like they had Munkar and Nakir, just like they had two angels in dunya, so there are two angels those angels are either punching you in the face and cursing you or they are putting you at ease and saying we were with you, you know
28:25Don't be afraid and taking you to the place of assembly in a certain way with a fast pace and with comfort or with disruption and
28:39you know further torment So the Day of Judgment is its own experience in that regard, but the Barzakh is part of the Akhirah It's important that like you've started that process
28:52You started that process of the hereafter once you pass away and so it is something that, bi'smi-llah ta'ala. We pray that Allah 'azawajal would make our last moments here moments of reassurance and we pray that Allah 'azawajal would make our
29:07first moments in the grave and beyond moments of reassurance and our first moments in the Day of Judgment beyond moments of reassurance until we enter into Paradise quickly and without account
29:19Jazakum Allah khair. That's a great question. This is a really good question here By the way, one that I'll elaborate on a bit is punishment in the grave for such a long time as an expiation of sins It can be an expiation for sins for the believer
29:33There is a narration for example about a person who was flogged one time and then he asked why was I flogged and we'll talk about that inshallah. It's not one of the narrations about I'd have a couple so it's not going to be
29:46throughout the entire period for everyone. Perhaps it could be you know to pay for a very particular sin that you're purified from Ultimately for the believer there are stages of purification and that's why for the believer
30:01at death when you're going through let's say a prolonged sickness at the time of death you would hope in the night out that that's purifying you from what sins remain on you so that you don't
30:12need to be purified from them in the grave and especially not to be purified on the Day of Judgment so bi'smi-llah ta'ala We pray that we enter into Jannah without any form of adab and any form of hisab, without being punished and without being questioned
30:26and that is not beyond the scope of the mercy of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala So ask Allah 'azawajal for the highest level of Paradise and ask Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala for complete protection from punishment in all stages
30:38All right, I'm gonna take this question here. Might be the last question. We'll see. But what happens to people who don't get buried in a grave? It doesn't matter. You know, there's the famous narration about a person who told his children to cremate him
30:51when he passed away because he was afraid of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala and Allah 'azawajal just gathered his presence together once again and Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala said to him like did you really think that you were going to escape? Why did you do that?
31:06And he says, you know, yeah, I was afraid of you and Allah 'azawajal forgave him You know, ultimately, but the point is is that whether you die at sea or whether your body disintegrates completely or whatever it is
31:19your grave, your grave is so much more than the plot of land that you're buried in on earth and so certainly
31:29Allah 'azawajal will take care of His believers and Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala will take to account those who require punishment All right, I'm gonna take the last question from Instagram inshallah because y'all have been patient over here
31:45Let's just see. I'm gonna wait to see which what's a really good question that pops up Our dreams after doing istikhara from Allah Istikhara is not
31:59related to your dreams If you go to the Dhu al-Hijjah series that I did, someone can actually put it in the comments inshallah Perhaps Yaqeen Admin, you can put it in the comments inshallah. The Dhu al-Hijjah series, there's an episode about istikhara and
32:14Istikhara is going to Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala to guide your decision one way or the other after you've properly taken the measures before to make the right decision
32:26So you've done istikhara which is talking to people and getting good advice from people. You have obviously, first and foremost, looked to the Qur'an and the Sunnah to see if it's a permissible
32:39pursuit or not and the way that you're going about it is right And then you pray istikhara for it to be a blessed decision, basically one way or the other So it's not necessarily
32:50connected to a dream in that regard and so if you are praying istikhara because you really want to marry someone and then you see that person in a dream in a wedding dress or in a suit
33:01it could just be that you just really want to marry that person and that's just your thoughts just coming to be in a dream, right? So don't make that connection so much so that you stake your istikhara on a dream and there's certainly nothing about like, you know
33:15do you see this color, that color or whatever it is? There's no istikhara fairy that shows up with an answer under your pillow Just watch the episode inshallah on istikhara from the Dhu al-Hijjah series
