In this #YaqeenBehindtheScenes look, Tesneem Alkiek discusses the beginning stages of her research through her initial reading of Ibn al-Qayyim’s treatise on the laws regulating religious minorities. She hopes to explore the social and political realities that shaped the various rights granted to minorities in her paper “Religious Minorities Under Muslim Rule.”

FELLOW, DIRECTOR OF EXPANDED LEARNING | Tesneem is the Director of Expanded Learning and a Fellow at Yaqeen Institute. She completed her undergraduate degree in Early Christianity and Islamic Studies at the University of Michigan. She is currently a Ph.D. candidate in Islamic Studies at Georgetown University with a focus on the development of Islamic law.
