Yaqeen Institute presented the 2018 Muhammad Ali Confidence Award to Councilman Basheer Jones at the 2nd annual banquet dinner, “Making Principled Progress.” The award represents individuals who have combined conviction with contribution and made an impact on society.

Councilman Basheer Jones, Cleveland’s first Muslim council representative, was elected in November 2017. At his swearing in ceremony in the Cleveland City Chambers, Councilman Jones said, “I wanna say something that probably has never been said in here before, as we say that God is the greatest, Takbir!” Jones represents what it means to be a proud Muslim. In his #ConfidentMuslim session at the 43rd Annual ICNA-MAS Convention, Jones discussed racism, empowerment, and appreciating the struggles of Muslims who laid out the foundation of our community in this country.

Councilman Jones started his career in grassroots activism and community organizing. He is the creator of the “Be the Change” leadership series that offers leadership and development workshops in various school systems throughout Ohio. As someone who is at the forefront of service in such a dynamic way, he demonstrates the spirit of Muhammad Ali by being unashamed and vocal about Islam and its principles.
