**[0:00]** Insha'Allah ta'ala, tonight we are going to pick up from where we left off with the martyrdom of Al-Imam Al-Husayn radiyAllahu ta'ala anhu in the massacre of Karbala.

**[0:19]** But I wanted to actually peel back and address it from a different angle. And they are two sisters, the women folk of Al-Husayn radiyAllahu ta'ala anhu in terms of his younger sisters and how they lived through this tragedy.

**[0:37]** And I guess a broader discussion of how they exist before and after this tragedy and what their lives actually represent. And so I want to base it first on a premise that the family of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam was destined for a difficult existence on this earth.

**[1:00]** The family of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam, this is something I want you to remember as we start to break down these lives further and start to talk about different layers of Karbala and the martyrdom of Al-Husayn as we will in the subsequent stories bidna lillahi ta'ala of companions that the life of the family of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi

**[1:19]** wasallam on this earth is meant to be a very difficult life. Now when we talk about Ali radiyAllahu ta'ala anhu and when we talk about Fatima al-Zahra radiyAllahu ta'ala anha and their children, we are talking about who, who can name me

**[1:35]** the children of Ali and Fatima. I just want to make sure you all memorize them. Al-Hasan, Al-Husayn and we said there was a third son, Muhsin or Muhassin who died in his infancy. And then there are two girls.

**[1:53]** Who are they? Zaynab and Umm Kulthum. May Allah be pleased with them. Now, this season of the first, we are going through the children of sahaba who are themselves sahaba, right?

**[2:10]** So we're going back and we're addressing the lives of people that were themselves companions and they're the children of companions as well. So very specific set of companions. We've covered their lives to some extent perhaps with their parents, but now we're going to look at them as individuals.

**[2:25]** But when it comes to Ali radiyAllahu ta'ala anhu, just to be very clear that after the death of Fatima al-Zahra radiyAllahu ta'ala anha, Ali radiyAllahu ta'ala anhu had many more children. He had many more children, totaling up to 14 sons and 19 daughters.

**[2:43]** Okay. And so that's why you're going to see names and he'll name the same name multiple times, multiple times. And so there are three Zaynab's in there. There are multiple Muhammad's in there. There are multiple Umm Kulthum's in there.

**[3:01]** There are multiple Ja'fars in there. There is Abu Bakr in there. There is a Umar in there. There is a Uthman in there. There is a Fatima bint Ali. There is a Khadija bint Ali. You understand? So just because you hear that someone is the son or the daughter of Ali radiyAllahu ta'ala

**[3:20]** anhu does not mean that they fit that specific category of being the children of both Ali radiyAllahu ta'ala anhu and Fatima al-Zahra radiyAllahu ta'ala anha. And the descendants of Ali radiyAllahu ta'ala anhu came through only five of his sons as

**[3:37]** the scholars document, obviously from al-Hassan wal-Husayn, from a very famous son who we will one day talk about, Muhammad bin al-Hanafiya and from a son of his named al-Abbas as well as his son Umar.

**[3:52]** So he has children from the male side from his descendants that lived through those five and SubhanAllah that the tragedy of Karbala and the multiple tragedies that would unfold in the Ummah would affect the entirety of the progeny of Sayyidina Ali radiyAllahu

**[4:11]** ta'ala anhu. So let's go back to again who we're going to be speaking about today inshaAllah ta'ala. So we're going to actually break this up into two parts. First we're going to talk about Zaynab al-Kubra, Zaynab al-Kubra, the elder Zaynab, Sayyidah

**[4:26]** Zaynab bint Ali radiyAllahu ta'ala anha. And then we will do a second part inshaAllah ta'ala about Umm Kulthum bint Ali radiyAllahu anha. Of course, to many of you, you're going to get lost with all the Ja'fars and Zaynabs

**[4:42]** and Umm Kulthums and because the names are repeated over and over and over again, because of course this is the same naming scheme of the daughters of the Prophet ﷺ. So it's repeating itself. And we see this within the family of the Prophet ﷺ that the names are repeated multiple times

**[5:00]** and that is part of the continuation. It's not uncommon to see the same name over and over and over again within the lineage of a single person. So let's go back to the story of Ahlul Bayt and obviously we ran out of time with al-Husayn

**[5:17]** radiyAllahu ta'ala anhu last time, but I want to build on what we spoke about. First of all, many times when I teach a biography of someone, I tend to pull out these narrations and we elaborate on the narration itself. And a lot of times we're covering people who are not commonly covered.

**[5:36]** And so the narrations are already few. In the case of al-Husayn radiyAllahu ta'ala anhu, in the case of Zaynab radiyAllahu ta'ala anha, in the case of these figures, I'm not looking at the specific narrations. I'm looking at framings. Why?

**[5:51]** Because there are multiple narrations. Almost all of them are going to be controversial to some extent. I don't want to get into the specifics of this word or that word, but focus on the framings. And so if you remember one of the themes of al-Husayn radiyAllahu ta'ala anhu, as he

**[6:07]** was leaving from Mecca to Kufa, to Iraq, thinking that he was going to have the support of the people. One of the themes is that multiple companions advised him not to go out of fear for him,

**[6:23]** out of distrust of what existed of the people of Kufa and Iraq at that time. By the way, this is not like a hate session on the people of Iraq. Because obviously we have multiple great scholars that came out of Iraq and you have multiple,

**[6:38]** I mean, you start with Abu Hanifa rahim Allah and go onwards, right? Just in terms of the madhab and fiqh and from Kufa itself, right? But you're speaking about a very specific political climate at the time. So when you see a generalization that exists in the text, it's not talking about like something genetic, it's talking about the political climate at the time and the culture at the

**[6:57]** time that became deeply problematic. And so Kufa was not something that the companions trusted. They didn't want Husayn radiyAllahu ta'ala anhu to go because they were worried about him being betrayed when he got there, but he has these bags of mail of support.

**[7:12]** Now as far as the specific chains are concerned of narrations, we actually only have two solid authentic chains of narration. One of them telling him to go and one of them telling him not to go. Abdullah ibn Zubair radiyAllahu anhuma telling him, if I had the support that you would have

**[7:29]** there because you grew up over there, then I would go. So I'll handle Mecca, you go handle Kufa. Abdullah ibn Abbas specifically radiyAllahu anhuma pleading with him not to go. Then you have a generality of narrations that are mentioned in books, Ibn Sa'ad and At-Tabari

**[7:44]** and others of companions where the narration, the chain itself is unreliable, but it speaks to a specific climate. So with that being said, subhanAllah, one of the things that we find in that statement of Ibn Umar radiyAllahu anhuma where he's speaking to Al-Husayn radiyAllahu anhu and

**[8:03]** asking him not to go is that he says to him that the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam was given a choice between this world and the hereafter. And he chose the hereafter. The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wasallam was given the choice between this world and

**[8:20]** the hereafter and the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam chose the hereafter. What is this referring to? At the time of the death of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wasallam, Hadith Abu Wahiba, where he is saying that he's been given a choice to remain amongst his people,

**[8:36]** a leader, or to choose Allah azawajal, to choose the hereafter, the highest companion. And he chose sallallahu alayhi wasallam the hereafter. And Ibn Umar radiyAllahu anhuma says, and you are a part of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi

**[8:52]** wasallam and wallahi no one will reach your status. Meaning your status is of a different level in terms of the hereafter. But don't plunge yourself into this affair. And there's something deeply poetic about this that I actually want us to reflect upon for a few moments inshaAllah ta'ala.

**[9:10]** That Allah azawajal chose the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam as the best of all creation and the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wasallam comes from the best class of people being the Prophets of Allah and the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam said, ashaddu an-nasi bala'an Those who are most tested in this world are the Prophets.

**[9:29]** And the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam was the most tested of the Prophets. Why because the greater the test, the greater the reward. And so when you look at the family of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam, that have

**[9:45]** the blood of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wasallam, you don't just say that sadaqa is haram for them, that they don't eat from charity, but that they are inevitably going to put forth a bitter sacrifice. And that is part of Allah azawajal elevating their rank.

**[10:01]** Because otherwise, again, if you try to look at these things, and especially in a time like Gaza, through the lens entirely of worldly justice, it's like the family of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam lived such difficult lives, each one of them, tragedy after tragedy

**[10:20]** after tragedy after tragedy, it's nonstop tragedy. It's painful. And you will not be able to make sense of it if you operate from a dunya-y paradigm, from a worldly paradigm, just like you won't be able to make sense of something like Gaza. How can the best people on the face of the earth have the most difficult lives on earth?

**[10:38]** And wallahi their lives are the most difficult. I mean, you read their story one after the other, it's like, they don't catch a break in terms of dunya. None of this, none of this minimizes the oppression and the evil doing of those that would hurt

**[10:53]** them. But it helps us contextualize and come to terms with what they suffered in this life. And subhanAllah, some of the ulama mentioned specifically now about al-Hassan, wal-Husayn, and those that would come after, that they were born, may Allah be pleased with them,

**[11:12]** towards the end of the life of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam, where the major trials of Islam had already passed. I want you to pay attention to this thought for a bit. The first started off with the family around the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam, 150

**[11:29]** plus episodes ago. And if you look at the most difficult episodes of the early life of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wasallam, who's taking the greatest beating? It's those people closest to the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wasallam.

**[11:44]** His family is paying the ultimate price. His wife Khadija radiyAllahu ta'ala anha, this perfect woman of beauty and status and wealth loses everything. Her health deteriorates and she dies as a result of the oppression before they can even

**[12:01]** make hijrah. Hamza radiyAllahu ta'ala anhu, his uncle, is the most brutally massacred of the shuhada of Uhud. Ali radiyAllahu ta'ala anhu is the last person to arrive on the hijrah by foot from Mecca.

**[12:17]** His feet covered in all sorts of blisters because no shoes could bear what were on his feet radiyAllahu ta'ala anhu and Fatima radiyAllahu anha, let's not even get started with the pain that she encountered. And so some of the scholars mentioned subhanAllah that of the benefits that we can derive for

**[12:36]** the suffering that Al-Hassan, Al-Husayn and those that came after may Allah be pleased with them from the family of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam that were born into a later reality into when the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam had passed the greatest hardship is that they went through tests that were similar to the early tests of Islam.

**[12:55]** And the process, Allah azawajal continues to elevate their rank and so their stories are uniquely tragic and turbulent like the early stories of Islam were uniquely tragic and turbulent. May Allah be pleased with them.

**[13:11]** And so you start with, I actually want to, before we go to the women folk in particular because the thing about the women folk in these stories is that the entries are usually very short because their lives are usually very private. But you can imagine the suffering that's happening in the background.

**[13:30]** That at the end of the day, while they're often not accounted for in the casualties like in Karbala, they're the widows. They're brought along as captives, right? And taken on a very difficult and humiliating experience that they encounter these tragedies

**[13:48]** in a very unique way. And that's not always going to be represented in the history books, but it will be in Allah azawajal's books. And so I want us to actually go from Fatima, the mother in this regard, and then bring

**[14:03]** it down to the women that we will be covering in two parts. And I go back to that incident where the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam is at his lowest point after Amul Huzun, after the year of grief, when he's lost Khadijah radiyAllahu

**[14:19]** anha, when he has lost his uncle Abu Talib, when he has lost protection, when he has lost safety. And the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam is praying at the Kaaba and these filthy people come and they put filth on the back of the most pure of Allah's creation, Muhammad Sallallahu

**[14:37]** Alaihi Wasallam. And they bury him under the intestines of a camel and mock him. And the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam does not have Khadijah radiyAllahu anha for Zamiluni. The Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam does not have Abu Talib to come and intercede on

**[14:54]** his behalf. Young Fatima radiyAllahu anha, this young girl comes running out of the home to the messenger of Allah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam to her father and peeling off the intestines and the dirt and the guts from the back of the messenger of Allah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam.

**[15:12]** And the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam comforting her as she's crying and wiping her tears and saying, don't cry. Inna Allaha Nasirun Abaqi. Allah will support your father. Allah will give victory to your father. SubhanAllah. This story will connect to the broader story of the women of Ahlul Bayt, right?

**[15:32]** The women of the family of the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam who will have their mirroring incidents and everything that will happen afterwards. There's another thing that SubhanAllah I was thinking about as well. It's just a reflection that in the midst of that great tribulation, there's great triumph.

**[15:49]** The Mahdi, the Mahdi, right? Is a descendant as the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam told us, a mujadid, a righteous man who will come towards. It's the end of time and he'll be a righteous Imam for the Muslims. The Mahdi is a descendant of Al-Hassan radiyAllahu ta'ala anhu, the son of Fatima radiyAllahu ta'ala anha.

**[16:11]** Fatima is Sayyidatu Nisa al-Jannah. She's the Queen of the Women of Paradise. And her descendants is chosen for something of that great task, right? Except for one woman, which is who?

**[16:29]** Maryam Alayhi Salaam. Because she asked out of her adab even, what about Maryam Natu Imran? The Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam said, you are the Queen of the Women of Paradise, except for Maryam Natu Imran. Her son, Isa Alayhi Salaam, has been chosen to be the one that will walk into the masjid

**[16:50]** and replace the Mahdi and assume the leadership and then lead this Ummah to its glory on this earth. And so Allah Azawajal chooses in the ultimate narrative, the ultimate story, both in this dunya as well as the allocated reward in the hereafter.

**[17:09]** That kathratul mashakka, that the greater the hardship, the greater the reward at the end of the day. May Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala reward them all. Allahumma ameen. And so we start with today, Zaynab bint Ali.

**[17:24]** And as we said, Ali has three Zaynabs from his children. And they are named most likely after Zaynab bint Muhammad Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam. Zaynab radiyAllahu ta'ala Anha would have been the sister of Fatima radiyAllahu ta'ala Anha.

**[17:45]** And so again, you're going to get lost with the names. If you're taking notes, I'm happy to help you fill in your notes after we're done tonight inshaAllah ta'ala. But you have a similar naming scheme. So Fatima radiyAllahu ta'ala Anha will give birth to Zaynab al-Kubra, Zaynab bint Ali. May Allah be pleased with her and with her parents.

**[18:03]** And the time that this takes place is the fifth year after hijrah. And so the way that most of the historians put this together, as I say, al-Hassan was born radiyAllahu ta'ala Anhu in the third year, al-Husayn radiyAllahu ta'ala Anhu in the fourth year, Zaynab in the fifth year.

**[18:20]** May Allah be pleased with them all. And the thing about her, so it's mentioned that she's born in the month of Sha'ban, most likely in the fifth year of the hijrah. The thing about her is that her entry in terms of her actual solidified historical background is very hard to piece together.

**[18:39]** It's actually very hard to piece together. And so you have to fill in the broader narratives of who she was. And so you'll see names that are given to her as Aqeelat Bani Hashim. The elegant noble woman, the intellect of Bani Hashim.

**[18:55]** Or Batalat Karbala, the hero of Karbala. Right? So she is both, you know, looked at as someone who had these inherent qualities, right? Of strength, of nobility, of intellect, as well as someone that took a noble stand on the day of Karbala.

**[19:16]** And I'll actually just read her short entry from Usud Al-Ghaba, from Al-Imam Al-Athir, Rahim Allah Ta'ala. And then we can start to break these down, inshallah, sentence by sentence. Because it's that short. It's actually not very long. When you look as far as the, you know, the full coherent biography, you get these indications.

**[19:36]** And then you have to go and break out each one of these details as much as you can. So he mentions about her Zaynab bint Ali ibn Abi Talib. Wasmahu Abdu Manaf ibn Abdul Muttalib ibn Hashim al-Qurashiya al-Hashimiyya. So her name is obviously Zaynab, the daughter of Ali, the son of Abu Talib, whose name was Abdu Manaf, the son of Abdul Muttalib ibn Hashim, the Qurashiya, the Hashimiyya.

**[20:03]** Wa umuha Fatimatu bint Rasulillahi Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam. Her mother was Fatima radiyAllahu ta'ala anha, the daughter of the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam. Adrakat an-Nabi Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam. Wa wulidat fi hayatihi. Walam talit Fatimatu bint Rasulillahi Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam ba'da wafatihi shay'a.

**[20:19]** So she was born in the lifetime of the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam. And Fatima did not give birth to any child after the death of the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam. Wakanat Zaynab mra'atan aqila, labiba, jazla.

**[20:35]** Zaynab radiyAllahu ta'ala anha was a woman that was very intelligent. So just think about the qualities that are going to be given to her. Intelligence, she was wise, she was someone that was very steadfast. And zawajaha abuha Ali min Abdullah ibn akhihi Ja'far.

**[20:56]** And she radiyAllahu ta'ala anhu married her to Abdullah ibn Ja'far ibn Abi Talib. So his nephew, Abdullah ibn Ja'far. And she had Ali, An'aun, Al-Abbas, and Muhammad.

**[21:11]** And she had a daughter named Umm Kulthum. And she was with her, wakanat ma'akhiha al-Husayn lamma qutila. She was with her brother al-Husayn when he was killed radiyAllahu ta'ala anhu. And she was carried as a captive to Damascus.

**[21:28]** Wa hadhara ta'inda Yazid ibn Muawiyah. She was there in the presence of Yazid ibn Muawiyah when she was carried there to Al-Sham. And she protested. Hina talaba al-Shamiyu ukhtaha Fatimata bint Ali min Yazid.

**[21:46]** She protested when one of the people in the presence of Yazid in Al-Sham requested Fatima bint Ali, her sister, to come forward. And all he says about her in this regard, mashhoorun mathkoorun fittawarikh wa huwa yadullu ala aqlin wa quwa

**[22:05]** that she is remembered frequently in the history books. And it speaks to her strength and her intelligence. I'll break this all up now inshaAllah into small pieces. I just wanted to give you the single most coherent paragraph about her radiyAllahu ta'ala anhu.

**[22:22]** And then you can start to break up what her life looks like radiyAllahu ta'ala anhu. So Ali radiyAllahu ta'ala anhu was 10 years younger than Ja'far radiyAllahu anhu.

**[22:38]** So as we said, you have talib, aqeel, Ja'far, Ali. And each one of them is 10 years apart, a decade apart. Ali radiyAllahu ta'ala anhu wanted to marry his daughters to the sons of Ja'far.

**[22:54]** He wanted to marry his daughters to the sons of Ja'far. Obviously Ja'far radiyAllahu anhu has the story of shahada in mu'tah, right? A very tragic story of martyrdom during the life of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam. And so Ali radiyAllahu ta'ala anhu marries her to Abdullah ibn Ja'far.

**[23:17]** And Abdullah ibn Ja'far is a specific figure that's important to remember. You know, subhanAllah, if I could show it to you, I've mentioned. My mother, may Allah be pleased with her, is a descendant of Ja'far radiyAllahu anhu. And she used to have on top of her bed the scroll that they give to all the descendants of Ja'far.

**[23:34]** And it was beautiful. It has the wings of Ja'far. And then it starts to show all of the descendants down to the person. And the person there was Abdullah. Most of the descendants of Ja'far are going to come through Abdullah ibn Ja'far radiyAllahu ta'ala anhu. And then it goes one by one.

**[23:49]** And Abdullah ibn Umar radiyAllahu anhu, when he used to see Abdullah ibn Ja'far, he used to say, marhaban, welcome to ibn dhul janahain. Welcome to the son of the man with two wings. Welcome to the son of the man with two wings.

**[24:04]** Because Ja'far radiyAllahu anhu was given the glad tidings when his arms were cut off in the battlefield. That Allah azawajal gave him two wings in exchange for the two arms that were taken away from him. So just think about like tragedy and tragedy all coming together here.

**[24:23]** Right? In this regard. So Zaynab was a child when the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam was alive. And obviously got to witness her grandfather sallallahu alayhi wasallam in the same beautiful way that al-Hassan and al-Husayn got to experience the messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wasallam.

**[24:40]** But later on, just as he reaches marriage age, Ali radiyAllahu ta'ala anhu marries her to Abdullah ibn Ja'far. And she has Ali, Aoun, al-Abbas, Muhammad and Umm Kulthum.

**[24:57]** Now what's narrated about her in terms of her personality is extreme generosity. Most of these are secondary sources. And they speak to larger framings that she was someone who was known as Umm al-Aitam.

**[25:16]** The mother of orphans because she requested for a house to be built in the time of Ali radiyAllahu ta'ala anhu for the orphans. So she used to take care of the orphans. Also Umm al-Awajis, the mother of the elderly or the disabled. Umm Hashim. Hashim, of course, it comes from breaking the bread to feed the masses.

**[25:35]** That's where Banu Hashim actually got that name as well. So she used to operate much in terms of charity of feeding the poor. And it makes sense because Ibn Hibban rahim Allah mentions about Abdullah ibn Ja'far radiyAllahu anhu that he was so wealthy that he and Zaynab,

**[25:55]** I mean, this is a house of wealth. He was so wealthy that his nickname was Qutb al-Sakha. Which is like, I guess Qutb is like a pole. A pole of generosity, right? A pillar of generosity. So despite the great wealth that they had, which wasn't common in Ahl al-Bayt, right?

**[26:13]** The great wealth that they had. They were people of zuhd. They were people of asceticism. And in that, subhanAllah, is a lesson that even the family of the Prophet ﷺ that got it good in terms of the dunya, they divorced themselves from it pretty quickly and with ease.

**[26:33]** It didn't tempt them. So al-Hassan radiyAllahu anhu, the doors opened up for him. He turned it away. Likewise, Zaynab and Abdullah ibn Ja'far. The doors opened up for them and they turned it away. And they become known for their generosity instead.

**[26:51]** And this is a prerequisite for when you are tested for a time of shidda, a time of great tribulation. That you have already divorced the dunya that would otherwise tempt you back to material things and away from Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala.

**[27:06]** So she's clearly someone in the broader sense who's known for her generosity. Who's known for her wisdom. Who's known for her dignity. Who's known for her intellect. Now, what happens with her is that when her brother al-Husayn radiyAllahu anhu goes out to Karbala, she insists to go with him.

**[27:27]** And she goes alongside two of her sons, Aoun and Muhammad. So they were amongst those who accompanied al-Husayn radiyAllahu anhu in Karbala. Now, keep in mind, when they left Mecca to go to Karbala, were they going for a battle?

**[27:46]** Were they going from Mecca to Iraq anticipating a battle? No. They were going to assume power, assume leadership. Because they were called by the people of Iraq to come and to take over. Al-Husayn radiyAllahu anhu is not taking an army here.

**[28:01]** He's taking his family. A few devoted followers and his family. Because presumably you have thousands of people in Kufa that are ready to receive you with their swords and protect you and fight under you as needed. So he's not expecting with this handful of his family members to end up in Iraq where his family is going to be under siege.

**[28:22]** That wasn't the preparation. That wasn't the expectation. And so, you know, all of these incidents of pain. And again, it's sort of like the du'a of Ta'if.

**[28:38]** It represents a sentiment. The sanad is not really there. The chain is not really there. But the idea of Zaynab speaking to al-Husayn in pain and being comforted by him the night before. All of this speaks to something that is deep. And so, one of the things that is written is that, you know, as she's in the tent the night before Karbala.

**[29:00]** And she's in the tent and she's in the tent and she's in the tent and she's in the tent. And she's in the tent and she's in the tent. And she's in the tent and she's in the tent. And she's in the tent and she's in the tent. And she's in the tent and she's in the tent. And she's in the tent and she's in the tent. And she's in the tent and she's in the tent. And she's in the tent and she's in the tent.

**[29:16]** And she's in the tent and she's in the tent. And she's in the tent and she's in the tent. And she's in the tent and she's in the tent. And she's in the tent and she's in the tent. And she's in the tent and she's in the tent. And then my father, Ali. And then my brother, Al-Hassan. And then my father, Ali.

**[29:33]** And then my brother, Al-Hassan. It's a powerful way that she's speaking to Al-Husayn, her brother. It's a powerful way that she's speaking to Al-Husayn, her brother. That you are the successor of those that have passed away. That you are the successor of those that have passed away. And you're the hope of those that remain. And you're the hope of those that remain. Like I don't want to see you die as well.

**[29:49]** I've already been through this. Obviously the death of the Prophet ﷺ, the greatest tragedy of all time. Obviously the death of the Prophet ﷺ, the greatest tragedy of all time. The death of her father. The death of her brother. And now she's staring at death once again. With her brother, Al-Husayn. And Al-Husayn, radiyAllahu ta'ala anhu, of the beauty of what he is doing.

**[30:05]** And Al-Husayn, radiyAllahu ta'ala anhu, of the beauty of what he is doing. SubhanAllah, like he already has to carry the ham. SubhanAllah, like he already has to carry the ham. He has to carry the difficulty of trying to fight off the massacre. He has to carry the difficulty of trying to fight off the massacre. And Husayn is the one comforting everyone. The night before and the day of. And so he, you know, mentions to her.

**[30:21]** And so he, you know, mentions to her. That, you know, do not let the shaytan take away your patience. That, you know, do not let the shaytan take away your patience. You know. Don't let shaytan take away your steadfastness. Don't let shaytan take away your steadfastness. Keep calm. And he's mentioning to her that I take an oath from you.

**[30:38]** And he's mentioning to her that I take an oath from you. That you do not tear your garment from me. That you do not tear your garment from me. That you do not strike your face from me. That you don't cry out. That you don't cry out. For woe and destruction. That at the end of the day,

**[30:54]** We go back to Allah. And our place is not in this dunya. And our place is not in this dunya. So you see a beautiful sentiment that's being represented. So you see a beautiful sentiment that's being represented. Between Al-Husayn and Zaynab. On that day. Where Al-Husayn is comforting his sister.

**[31:10]** And on the day of. Zaynab radiyAllahu ta'ala anha. Is not only. Is not only. You know, standing resolute and firm. But she has to watch her son be killed. But she has to watch her son be killed. And then she has to watch her brother be killed.

**[31:27]** Al-Husayn. And then she has to watch another one of her sons be killed as well. And then she has to watch another one of her sons be killed as well. And one of the things that is related about her. And one of the things that is related about her. Is that she's the one who protects Zayn al-Abideen Ali ibn al-Husayn. Is that she's the one who protects Zayn al-Abideen Ali ibn al-Husayn. In the tent from being killed as well.

**[31:43]** The lone survivor of the males of that day. The lone survivor of the males of that day. Zayn al-Abideen radiyAllahu ta'ala anhu. One day we will talk about Ali ibn al-Husayn. And so you have a woman that is covering her nephew. And so you have a woman that is covering her nephew. And so you have a woman that is covering her nephew. While her sons are being killed.

**[31:59]** While her brother is being killed. And what really makes her poetic and strong is that she's a woman who then speaks up with certainty and intelligence. And so you have her anger, if you will, being directed towards different segments.

**[32:15]** The first set of anger is directed towards the people of Kufa. Again, we're speaking about a political climate. We're not talking about Ahl al-Iraq, all right? We're talking about a political climate at the time. And that speaks to something that's deeper, you know, Sa'd ibn Ubaidah.

**[32:31]** He says that I saw some people, some older people, some older men that were watching, you know, everything happened from afar. They were on a hill and they were crying and they were saying, Oh Allah, descend your victory while they were watching from afar.

**[32:48]** And I called out to them and I said, Oh enemies of Allah, why don't you come down and help yourselves? You know, it's not sufficient for you to stand back and to cry. And that puts us also on the place of interrogation, right? You're not always as incapable as you make yourself out to be.

**[33:06]** You know, it's not enough for you just to cry. What are you doing about it? And so what happens after the massacre of Karbala is that the people of Kufa were then crying and weeping over their death. And so you have her strong words that she reserves for them where she says,

**[33:24]** Atabkoon, now you cry? Now you cry? Fabkoo kathiran wadhhakoo qaleelan. Cry a lot and laugh little. Your tears don't mean anything to us now. Which is subhanAllah a sign for us that sometimes people don't want your delayed condolences when you could have helped them in the moment of their pain.

**[33:45]** And there are similar words of Zayn al-Abideen that are narrated towards the people. Then you have in the court of Ubaidullah bin Ziyad, who took the head of her brother, Al-Husayn, and who was playing with the head of Al-Husayn.

**[34:05]** If like you give a whole lecture about the sickness and the psychotic nature of these people, right? You would never do enough. How deranged do you have to be? And he actually sees Zaynab and Zaynab was a woman who was very strong, who was very resistant, right?

**[34:25]** To any type of humiliation. So he actually says to her, he says, Alhamdulillah lathee fadahakoom waqatalakoom waakthabahudoothakoon. That all praises be to Allah who embarrassed you, who killed you, and who foiled your plans.

**[34:43]** Can you imagine you're saying that to the granddaughter of the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam, while playing with the head of the grandson of the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam? And she responds and she says, Alhamdulillah lathee karamana bi Muhammadin Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam wa tahharana minal ridshi tatheera.

**[35:04]** Innama yakthibul fajiru wa yaftadihul fasiqu wa huwa ghayruna. She responded and she said, All praises be to Allah who honored us with the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam and who purified us from all filth.

**[35:21]** And it is not the one or we are not those who lie and who are immoral and they are truly the disgraced ones and that is not us. So Ubaidullah ibn Ziyad, and I want you to think about this when you see

**[35:36]** these Zionists in particular try to taunt you with verses of the Quran or verses of the Bible and you know, try to say like, where is your God now? And truly Allah is not doing anything for you now and they poke at you, right? And one day that laughter will change.

**[35:53]** One day that laughter will change. He says to her, kayf ra'ayti sun'a Allahi fee ahli baytika wa akhiki? How do you see that Allah treated your family and your brother? You imagine the arrogance and she responds and she says,

**[36:14]** ma ra'aytu illa khayra ma ra'aytu illa khayra? I have not seen except for good. I have not seen except for good. Like that defiance is a different type of defiance and it's something that actually bothers the tyrants who doesn't just try to physically torture,

**[36:31]** but who tries to psychologically torture and wants to see you relinquish your faith. And so when you see Ahlul Ghazza, for example, and they shout about the betrayal of the Arabs and they shout about the betrayal of the Muslims and they shout about the neglect of the world, but they say alhamdulillah, ma lana ghayra Allah?

**[36:49]** Hasbuna Allah wa ni'ma alwakeel. Like instantly, flawlessly, they take that bitterness towards people and go right to great gratefulness to Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala and no lack of faith or certainty in Allah. That's iman, that's tawakkul, that's different.

**[37:06]** And so she demonstrates that as well. And subhanAllah, as we said, Ubaidullah ibn Ziyad was someone who Allah azawajal would punish with a miserable fate. By the way, because time ran out, I didn't get to give some of those details, but I'll just say subhanAllah, there's punishment even before you pass away.

**[37:23]** By the way, he was about 28 years old and Husayn radiyAllahu ta'ala anhu was about 58. So you can even just, he's practically a kid that is playing with the head of the most noble man on the face of the earth at the time, radiyAllahu ta'ala anhu, who was much older than him, senior to him, elevated in every sense.

**[37:41]** And he's really humiliating himself in the process. In the process of that, in the last year of his life, his wife cursed him until he divorced her. His mother, when he went to his own mother,

**[37:57]** his mother said to him, Ukhruj ayyuha al khabeeth, wallahi laa adhunnuka illa min ahlinnaar. Leave me, oh filthy one. Wallahi, I see that, I don't see a possibility for you except for you being from the people of hellfire

**[38:12]** because of the jur'ah, the audacity you showed with the family of the messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam. I want nothing to do with you. So the tyrant flexes on people. But subhanAllah, everything is falling apart behind the scenes. And one year later, as we said, Allah azawajal made it so that he would be beheaded by Mukhtar al-Thaqafi.

**[38:34]** His head would be played with on the exact same day of Ashura. Just like he did to al-Husayn radiyAllahu ta'ala anhu. And then the hereafter is another story altogether, right? This is just the beginning of your torment. And for the believer, this is just the beginning of your delight when it all happens.

**[38:51]** Zaynab radiyAllahu ta'ala anha, along with the women folk and the children, were then taken as captives to Damascus, to Damashq. And psychologically, how difficult is it?

**[39:07]** They came from Mecca to Iraq with al-Husayn radiyAllahu ta'ala anhu leading them. They were made to travel from Iraq to Syria with the head of al-Husayn radiyAllahu ta'ala anhu on a stick.

**[39:23]** That's the pain these people had to go through. These are the family folks of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam. To torment them and to humiliate them. And in that last statement of Ibn al-Athir's biography of Zaynab radiyAllahu ta'ala anha,

**[39:42]** it's in the court of Yazid ibn Muawiyah where the women of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam and the family of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam were brought in as captives. The children are brought in as captives. And this is like this whole, you know, glorious display.

**[39:59]** And a man looks towards Fatima bint Ali. Fatima bint Ali. Remember Ali had a daughter named Fatima afterwards. And he requests her. And subhanAllah, listen to the power of the words of Zaynab radiyAllahu ta'ala anha.

**[40:17]** You can just see her strength, her conviction. She responds to him and she says, Ya ibn al-tulqa, you know, O son of the freed ones. What is she referring to? Like it just shows her eloquence.

**[40:32]** Al-tulqa were the people in Mecca that were freed by the amnesty of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam. Remember we talk about the categorizations of the sahaba, right? So those that were given amnesty on the day of Mecca. Some of them became incredible companions, by the way.

**[40:49]** Right, but as far as the timing of Islam, I mean, you got the first that embraced Islam around the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam, as-sabiqoon, al-awwaloon, al-muhajiroon, al-ansar, and so on and so forth, right? So as a category, this isn't a good category, but some of them became some of the greatest people on earth, right?

**[41:06]** So it's part of, it's an exercise of eloquence, but subhanAllah, she says, is it just, ya'bn-tulqa, O son of those who were given amnesty, that you hold the daughters of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wasallam as captives,

**[41:23]** while your women are secluded in their chambers? And you treat them in this fashion? So she was a woman radiyAllahu ta'ala anha, that expresses her outrage, that has her sense of justice, but at the same time, never loses her sense of clarity, her sense of iman.

**[41:41]** May Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala be pleased with her. What happens after that is where the mystery then takes place in history. All right, so she goes back to Medina. How many of you are from Egypt, by the way? We're the Egyptians here. All the Iraqis left, I'm sorry.

**[41:59]** The Shamis were just about to get some cold feet too, right? There are three shrines for Zaynab, Sayyidah Zaynab, right? There's a whole neighborhood of a Sayyidah Zaynab in Egypt. And then there's one where? In Ash-Sham, right?

**[42:17]** So is Zaynab in Iraq? Is she in Ash-Sham? Is she in Egypt? Where is she buried? So essentially, once she returns to Medina, there are departing narratives as to what happens next. Does she then live a quiet life with Abdullah ibn Ja'far

**[42:34]** and alongside Ahlul Bayt in that vicinity once again and die quietly and buried in Medina? Or does she make her way outwards? Now, there's no doubt that she was a woman who was smart, collected, modest, you know, an intellectual, a marja,

**[42:52]** someone who's gone back to for multiple things, but does she actually make her way out? So one narration, when I say narration, I'm talking about the Asanid here, change. I'm talking about like things that you'll find in the books here. Is that Ibn Abbas radiyAllahu anhuma told her in Medina, don't stay here because you might put, you might be at risk

**[43:09]** if you stay here in the city of the Prophet, sallallahu alayhi wasallam. Where should I go? Go to Egypt because people will love you there because of your relationship to the messenger of Allah, sallallahu alayhi wasallam. Obviously, this is the story that the Egyptians really, really love because she's then welcomed into Egypt.

**[43:26]** The governor of Egypt is Maslama Ibn Mukhallad radiyAllahu anhu, a companion of the Prophet, sallallahu alayhi wasallam, tells her to come to Egypt. She is hosted in such a way that for a year, she is a Raisat al-Diwan.

**[43:41]** She's the head of the Diwan. She is the source of Shura. She's the person who everyone goes back to for consultation. Everyone wants to visit this noble granddaughter of the Prophet, sallallahu alayhi wasallam, and then she passes away and she is buried there in Egypt. And of course, she makes a lot of du'as for Egypt and stuff like that.

**[44:00]** And all of that is there, right? No way to document this for sure. Or was she killed on her way out of Damascus? Or was she killed in Iraq?

**[44:15]** So you have these different places and there are two possibilities that I'll leave you with here. One of them is that Ali radiyAllahu anhu has three Zainab's. Zainab bint Ali, Zainab bint Ali, Zainab bint Ali. And so it happens in the books at times that you mix up,

**[44:33]** especially again with the women, you mix up al-Kubra and al-Sughra. You mix up the older one and the younger one and they all kind of become conflated with their stories, right? So that way you make the Egyptians and the Syrians happy. All right, you make everybody happy. The other one is that of course, you have multiple stations,

**[44:51]** a maqam for a companion in this place and a shrine for a companion in this place. And it doesn't make sense whatsoever that people would just build shrines and stuff like that of companions in different places, even though it's historically, you know, certain that they're not buried in that place, right?

**[45:06]** But the point is, is that she passes away radiyAllahu anhu, quiet life, but a life of great tragedy. A life of great tragedy radiyAllahu anhu. And we ask Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala to send his peace and blessings upon the Prophet SallAllahu Alaihi Wasallam

**[45:23]** and his family. Joins her family after her death, but we don't know much about her afterwards.
