**[0:00]** How many Zayds have we covered so far that you guys can name? How many Zayds have we covered so far that you can name?

**[0:17]** Four? Who are they? MashaAllah, really really good. So he got three. So we had Zayd ibn Harithah, obviously, the beloved one of the Prophet (ﷺ).

**[0:37]** We had Zayd ibn Thabit, who of course is the great young scholar from Al-Madinah that we owe so much of our scholarship to. We have Zayd ibn Al-Khattab, who is the older brother or the more pious brother of Umar

**[0:57]** according to Umar. And that, of course, quiet in the background, but who became Muslim before him and who was martyred before him and Umar used to praise him. There's another Zayd that we covered as well. I'll give you a clue.

**[1:13]** Hadithatul Raji' in the massacre of Bi'r Ma'una and Al-Raji'. Zayd ibn Ad-Dathina, Zayd ibn Ad-Dathina (رضي الله عنه). And today we have another Zayd. And this Zayd is Zayd ibn Al-Arqam (رضي الله عنه).

**[1:34]** And here's the thing, like I've said, there are some sahaba that get lost because of their name and you have to sort of extract a few small details about them. The very interesting thing about this Zayd ibn Al-Arqam (رضي الله عنه) is

**[1:49]** that Imam Al-Dhahabi (رحمه الله) introduces him by saying, كان من مشاهير الصحابة He was actually one of the most famous sahaba of the Prophet (ﷺ). He was a very prominent and famous companion of the Prophet (ﷺ). وله عدة أحاديث And he has multiple ahadith of the Prophet (ﷺ).

**[2:09]** But there are just too many Zayds. And subhanAllah, there are the ones that we covered, and by the way, there are others that we didn't cover. There is Zayd ibn Kharija, who we might cover inshaAllah because he has a very unique story, small story. Zayd ibn Kharija ibn Zayd.

**[2:27]** There is Zayd ibn Wadi'a, who's also, actually Zayd ibn Wadi'a is Badri and Uhud. So he's one of the early companions of the Prophet (ﷺ). So it's just a lot of Zayds. So when I talked about Usama ibn Zayd and I said that one of my goals is that someone's

**[2:43]** going to name their son Usama, right? And we can claim that as a win for the first. We take back our pre-9/11 history, right? And name their son Usama. I actually had a really interesting conversation with someone who named his son Zayd and he told me, Shaykh, should I name him on the niyyah of Zayd ibn Kharija or Zayd ibn Thabit?

**[3:02]** Like which niyyah should I have? Because obviously, Ibn al-Qayyim (رحمه الله) mentions this, that the name is a niyyah, it's an intention. So when you name your child after a person or after a quality, it's because you want them to live up to that name or that quality. So he said, should he be Zayd ibn Haritha or Zayd ibn Thabit?

**[3:19]** I said, you know what, make the niyyah that he's all of the Zayds. He has some of Zayd ibn Haritha, right? Zayd ibn Thabit. He has some of Zayd ibn al-Khattab, right? Zayd ibn al-Arqam, ibn Wadi'a, ibn Kharija, and the list goes on and on.

**[3:35]** There are even more Zayds, I'm sure, if I look deeply into the books of the Sahaba, I'll find some more Zayds there. So make the intention that it's all of them. It's okay. They all have great qualities that you can extract from. So who is Zayd ibn al-Arqam, this famous Sahabi?

**[3:53]** But just a show of hands, how many of you have heard about him before? So a famous Sahabi, maybe one or two people have heard about him, which is natural. Who is he? And why did I choose to cover him now? My focus as we're sort of digging now, because if you realize, I think this is episode 170,

**[4:12]** we've covered pretty much all of the major companions of the Prophet (ﷺ). There are a few here or there, but most of the companions that we'll cover from here on out, they're a paragraph, right? And you're extracting. The reason why I'm choosing him is because I'm sticking to this theme of the youth around

**[4:30]** the Prophet (ﷺ) right now. These young people around the Prophet (ﷺ) that were in many cases, Sahaba, the children of Sahaba, right? Or they were raised by companions while they were themselves companions, but they have very youthful memories of the Prophet (ﷺ) and they lived long lives to talk about the

**[4:48]** Prophet (ﷺ) after he passed away. So Zayd's full name is Zayd ibn al-Arqam ibn Zayd ibn Qays. Zayd ibn al-Arqam ibn Zayd ibn Qays. And he's named after his grandfather who was one of the seniors from the tribe of Khazraj.

**[5:10]** So he's an Ansari. The interesting thing about Zayd ibn al-Arqam is that he resembles Zayd ibn Thabit in his biography and al-Arqam from Mecca in his biography. And he's Zayd ibn al-Arqam. Just his name, subhanAllah, is very unique in that regard.

**[5:27]** So Zayd ibn al-Arqam ibn Zayd ibn Qays. He's from Banu al-Harith ibn al-Khazraj of the Ansar, one of the elite tribes of the Ansar. His kunya, you all should know what a kunya means by now, the father of so and so.

**[5:44]** His kunya, there is a difference of opinion. Some say Abu Amr, some say Abu Amr, some say Abu Sa'id, some say Abu Sa'id, some say Abu Hamza. There is one that's unique that I'll mention though, which is Abu Anisa, which is his daughter.

**[5:59]** His daughter is actually a narrator, right? So she becomes a muhadithah, she becomes a narrator herself. So Anisa, waqila Anisa, Anisa or Anisa, but the more proper name it seems is Anisa, was his daughter who would narrate from him and about him.

**[6:16]** May Allah (سبحانه وتعالى) be pleased with him and his family. And his story is unique from the start, from the get-go, because his father died when he was young and he was raised by one of the most beloved people to the Prophet (ﷺ).

**[6:35]** So the man who is a father figure to him, he says, kuntu yatiman fi hijri ibn Rawaha. I was an orphan raised by Abdullah ibn Rawaha. Abdullah ibn Rawaha (رضي الله عنه). And I was thinking about this and I was like, subhanAllah, you look at Abdullah ibn Rawaha.

**[6:54]** Abdullah ibn Rawaha is one of the first handful of Ansar to come accept Islam with the Prophet (ﷺ). So he's one of the representatives, one of the nuqaba who accepted Islam with the Prophet (ﷺ) in Mecca, brought Islam to Medina. And you just have to remind yourself who Abdullah ibn Rawaha is.

**[7:13]** He's one of the chiefs of the Khazraj. He's one of the scribes of the Prophet (ﷺ). He's one of the poets of the Prophet (ﷺ). And he's one of those who fought alongside the Prophet (ﷺ) in every battle, fasted alongside

**[7:31]** the Prophet (ﷺ) when no one else would be fasting. He is so righteous, so unbelievable in his piety that his brother used to say that, oh I seek refuge of committing a sin that would embarrass me with Abdullah ibn Rawaha after

**[7:47]** he passed away. As you know, if you remember in the Barzakh series that the deeds of the living are presented or they come to know of the people that are living. And he was afraid that something would happen, right, or that he would shame himself and the news would be carried to Abdullah ibn Rawaha, this highly righteous man (رضي

**[8:05]** الله عنه), who is elite in so many different ways. And if you remember, Abdullah ibn Rawaha was the third in line when the Prophet (ﷺ) sent the army to the Battle of Mu'tah.

**[8:22]** It was Zayd ibn Haritha, and then it was Ja'far ibn Abi Talib, and then it was Abdullah ibn Rawaha. May Allah (سبحانه وتعالى) be pleased with them all. So this is the man that raised him. And that should tell you a lot right away that many of the characteristics and qualities

**[8:37]** of Abdullah ibn Rawaha who plays that father figure role to him are going to transfer to him. So he's going to be highly learned. He's going to be literate. He can read, he can write. He's someone who has a natural inclination towards scholarship. And he's someone that has a lot of courage and a lot of bravery and that wants to fight

**[8:55]** alongside the Prophet (ﷺ) just like he saw Abdullah ibn Rawaha (رضي الله عنه). Now when did he accept Islam? He accepted Islam with Abdullah ibn Rawaha. So since he's considered from the family of ibn Rawaha, when Abdullah ibn Rawaha came

**[9:10]** to accept Islam, take the bay'ah with the Prophet (ﷺ), it was on behalf of his family. So technically Zayd ibn Al-Arqam is also from the first to accept Islam in Medina, even if it is through, again, the person that was like his father, Abdullah ibn Rawaha.

**[9:28]** May Allah (سبحانه وتعالى) be pleased with him. It's also, by the way, subhanAllah, another just lesson to pay attention to that everything we're going to mention here, that is also from the good deeds of Abdullah ibn Rawaha. So ibn Rawaha already has this lengthy record with the Prophet (ﷺ), this high station.

**[9:47]** But he's also kafir ul-yateem. He's also someone who took in an orphan and raised an orphan. And he raised an orphan that would become highly consequential in the history of Islam. And that, inshaAllah, is also part of his good deeds as well.

**[10:03]** So what makes this companion famous? Or where do we start to see him? And I'm going to start pairing companions off, inshaAllah, going forward that have somewhat similar stories. What makes him very interesting? His story intersects with the chief of the hypocrites in Medina quite a bit, Abdullah

**[10:24]** ibn Ubayy ibn Salul. Abdullah ibn Ubayy ibn Salul, the chief of the hypocrites of Medina, again, to just refresh your memory in brief, he was the person who was about to become the king of Yathrib, the king of Medina.

**[10:39]** And then suddenly his people accepted Islam and they brought the Prophet (ﷺ). So he hated the Prophet (ﷺ) deeply. You know, as the saying goes that his robe was already being tailored for him. Like it was done, a done deal that he was going to assume power.

**[10:55]** Next thing he knows, the Ansar went to Mecca, brought the Prophet (ﷺ), and now he's been unseated and he is being moved to the side. Now the Prophet (ﷺ) respects him and he wants to assure different stakeholders in Medina

**[11:11]** that he's not coming to, you know, to steal their thunder, right? That this is the mission of Islam. So the Prophet (ﷺ) is going to try with him the same way the Prophet (ﷺ) would try with all of the Jewish tribes and the same way the Prophet (ﷺ) would try with the leaders in Mecca as well, to try his best to negotiate those feelings without compromising the message.

**[11:30]** That's what the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) would do. So Abdullah ibn Ubayy, there are a few different incidents now that will connect Zayd ibn Al-Arqam with him. The first one actually brings in, who we just finished, Usama ibn Zayd.

**[11:51]** Usama ibn Zayd is the narrator. He says that the Prophet (ﷺ), when he first brought Islam to Medina, he was riding on a donkey and he had Usama (رضي الله عنه) behind him and they were seated on a cushion on this

**[12:09]** donkey in a place called Fadak, which is near Medina. So he says that he was going down the street of Banu Harith al-Khazraj to inquire (ﷺ) about the health of Sa'd ibn Ubadah (رضي الله عنه).

**[12:25]** So Sa'd ibn Ubadah was sick. The Prophet (ﷺ) was riding. He had Usama ibn Zayd with him to go check on Sa'd ibn Ubadah. And while the Prophet (ﷺ) was going, this is very early on, this is before the Battle of Badr. While the Prophet (ﷺ) was on his way, he passed by a group of people from Medina and they

**[12:45]** were mixed, meaning Muslims, he says, Mushrikeen, idol worshippers, and some of the Jewish tribes as well. So you had a whole mix of people that were sitting in Medina. This is early on in the Prophet (ﷺ)'s coming to Medina.

**[13:00]** And amongst them were Abdullah ibn Ubayy ibn Salul, the chief hypocrite, and Abdullah ibn Rawaha (رضي الله عنه). Right? They were sitting in this gathering. And at that point, Abdullah ibn Ubayy ibn Salul did not yet pretend to embrace Islam.

**[13:18]** So he's still at this point, clearly a non-Muslim. Later on when he sees it advantageous to pretend to be Muslim, he will pretend to be Muslim. But this is really early on in Medina. Prophet (ﷺ) is riding with Usama ibn Zayd. And as the Prophet (ﷺ) comes to this group, the Prophet (ﷺ) walks by with his donkey,

**[13:39]** he rides with his donkey, and Abdullah ibn Ubayy ibn Salul, he covers his nose with his mantle and he says, La tughabbiru alayna, get away from us, don't put dust on us. So he disrespects the Prophet (ﷺ).

**[13:56]** And again, he's not pretending to be Muslim yet. So he's showing his contempt to the Prophet (ﷺ) very openly. So get the dust away from us, get your animal away from us. So the Prophet (ﷺ), he didn't engage in the lowly tactics of Abdullah ibn Ubayy ibn Salul.

**[14:13]** He simply (ﷺ) put his donkey down, he came down from his animal, and he invited them to Allah (سبحانه وتعالى) and the Prophet (ﷺ) started to read Qur'an to them. Okay? So the Prophet (ﷺ) technically is the leader of the state, he's the head of state now.

**[14:28]** Whether you like him or not, he's the head of state. And the Prophet (ﷺ) is approaching this gathering with grace. And he gave them all salam. So the ruling, the hukm of saying salam to a group of Muslims, non-Muslims when they're

**[14:45]** scattered together is taken from this hadith, it's taken from this story. So the Prophet (ﷺ) said salam, he started to read Qur'an to them and do da'wah to them. Abdullah ibn Ubayy said, اَيُّهَا الْرَجُلُ إِنَّهُ لَوْ صَدَقْتَ لَمَا تُؤْذِنَا بِهِ فِي مَجَالِسِنَا

**[15:03]** He said that, if what you are saying is true, then the best thing would be don't bother us in our gathering. Don't put adha, don't bother us in our gathering, leave us alone. اِرْجَعْ إِلَى رَحْلِكِ Go back to your donkey. فَمَنْ جَعَكَ مِنَّا فَاقْصُسْ عَلَيْهِ And whoever wants to listen to you, then go ahead and speak to them,

**[15:22]** but we don't want to listen to you. So Abdullah ibn Ubayy ibn Salul is trying to undermine the Prophet (ﷺ) early on here and say, look, we don't want to listen to you. So go ahead. You know, just don't bother us with this message of yours. Whoever wants to listen to you can go out to you.

**[15:39]** Abdullah ibn Rawaha (رضي الله عنه), he stands up and he says, بَلِ اتِنَا فِي مَجَارِسِنَا Rather come to us whenever you want to. فَإِنَّا نُحِبُّ ذَرِكَ We love listening to you. Then they started to fight with each other and a fight broke out amongst the Muslims

**[15:56]** and the non-Muslims in this gathering. So this is the first sort of narration where the contempt of Abdullah ibn Ubayy ibn Salul is showing and Abdullah ibn Rawaha, who's the father figure to Zayd ibn Al-Arqam, takes the stand. Usama ibn Zayd, who we just talked about last week, is on the back of the Prophet (ﷺ).

**[16:16]** And they're all witnessing this fight that breaks out amongst the Muslims and the non-Muslims. We'll come back to this narration later, but that's just to show you the beginning of hypocrisy. The Battle of Badr happens. Zayd ibn Al-Arqam says that I was amongst those that was too young to be accepted by the Prophet (ﷺ) in battle for the Battle of Badr.

**[16:40]** So the Prophet (ﷺ) sent me back. And the Prophet (ﷺ), of course, took Abdullah ibn Rawaha amongst one of the leaders of the battle. But Zayd ibn Al-Arqam said I wasn't allowed to fight alongside the Prophet (ﷺ). Urwa says, so I'm using the names of narrators so you can start to connect the last two episodes as well.

**[17:00]** Urwa says, رَدَّ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ نَفَرًا يَوْمَ أُحُدٍ استَصْغَرَهُمْ ﷺ The Prophet (ﷺ) sent back a group of youth on the day of Uhud that were too young to fight on the Battle of Uhud.

**[17:19]** منهم أُسَامَة وَابْنُ عُمَر وَالْبَرَاء وَزَيْدِ ابْنُ أَرْقَم وَزَيْدِ ابْنُ ثَابِت So he said amongst those that the Prophet (ﷺ) sent back because they were too young to fight that day, Usama ibn Zayd, Abdullah ibn Umar, Al-Bara' (رضي الله عنه), Zayd ibn Arqam (رضي الله عنه), and Zayd ibn Thabit (رضي الله عنه).

**[17:40]** So the Prophet (ﷺ) sent these five back. But جَعَلَهُمْ حَرَسًا لِلْبِرِيَّةِ The Prophet (ﷺ) told them, look, why don't you take your arms and why don't you go guard the city of Medina, guard the women and the children in Medina.

**[17:55]** So the Prophet (ﷺ) gave them a substitute instead of being in battle to basically act as guards on that day. So he said that we took arms and this was sort of his first practicing with his arms to at least go and guard the city of Medina in the case that the disbelievers would find their way into breaching the city of Medina

**[18:14]** and they would fight with the Prophet (ﷺ) and his community. Of course, Abdullah ibn Rawaha going forth. Now Abu Ishaq, he says that I was once sitting with Zayd ibn Arqam (رضي الله عنه)

**[18:29]** and he was asked كم غزى النبي ﷺ من غزوة? How many times did the Prophet (ﷺ) go out to battle? How many battles did the Prophet (ﷺ) have? Expeditions, whether it materialized in face-to-face combat or it was an expedition

**[18:45]** that didn't materialize in any actual fighting. He says 19, تسعاشر. The Prophet (ﷺ) went out in 19 battles. So he said that he was then asked كم غزوت أنت معه? How many times did you fight alongside the Prophet (ﷺ)?

**[19:03]** قال سبعاشر. 17 of those 19 times. So that immediately tells you that he missed Badr and Uhud and that was it. And قلت فأيهم كانت أولا؟ Which battle was first?

**[19:18]** قال العسير فذكرت لي قتاد فقال العشير. The battle of Usayr was the first battle, the first expedition that I fought alongside the Prophet (ﷺ). However, the major incident with Zayd ibn Arqam

**[19:36]** which if you were to read a biography of Zayd ibn Arqam and let's say it's 7 paragraphs, 4 paragraphs are the singular incident. It comes in his first major battle alongside the Prophet (ﷺ), his first major campaign. And this is a campaign, a battle that has so many stories that surround it.

**[19:56]** Amongst them حديثة الإفك, the slander of our mother Aisha (رضي الله عنها) and so many other significant incidents in the seerah happened along this battle. And this is the battle of Muraisi' or the campaign of Banu al-Mustalaq.

**[20:11]** Muraisi' which is the campaign of Banu al-Mustalaq. So he explains what happened. Basically, while the Prophet (ﷺ) went out to Banu al-Mustalaq and he was coming back, Abdullah ibn Ubayy ibn Salul wants to make a play on Medina.

**[20:30]** He wants to find now any excuse to undermine the Prophet (ﷺ) and to actually take Medina. Now this is a significant point in the seerah because up until now, like you've got Badr, the Prophet (ﷺ) won. So the hypocrites pretended to be Muslim.

**[20:46]** Uhud, alright, the Prophet (ﷺ) wasn't eliminated. Yes, they suffered, they took a major blow but they survived it. And this was in many ways a draw, right? In the sense that they won the beginning of the battle, they lost the second part of the battle. But Uhud was painful but the Prophet (ﷺ) survived, Medina thrived.

**[21:04]** Okay, Khandaq at some point, right? They survived a genocide attempt, literally. They surrounded Medina from all sides to try to wipe them out. So Abdullah ibn Ubayy ibn Salul is looking for now with a sense of urgency, a way by which he can undermine the Prophet (ﷺ).

**[21:22]** So what happens is that there are two men that start to fight over some water on the way back. So they get to the well, they uncover the well and two of these men start to fight over the water. And they're just commoners from amongst the Muslims.

**[21:41]** But the suggestion is that one of them is from the Muhajireen, the other one is from the Ansar. So it's a Meccan fighting a Medinian, right? And Abdullah ibn Ubayy ibn Salul was Yathrib first. He was making Yathrib great again.

**[21:56]** You know, we can't have Mecca coming in here and every time they show up, we've got to keep them out of here. And every time he finds the opportunity to say something, he says, these people came from Mecca and they messed things up for us. Before they showed up, we were great, right? Everything was wonderful, not mentioning the Bu'ath wars

**[22:12]** and people almost killing each other off altogether, but that's all right. Like Mecca comes and there's a Meccan problem that we have. And that's how he always used to posit things with these people, right? The famous saying, Samman kalbak ya'kulk

**[22:27]** that if you fatten up your dog, it will eat you. And that's how he presented the people of Mecca, right? You gave them, you let them into your house, you treat them well, and now they're taking advantage of your kindness. So he would try to be a fitna for the Ansar. So what did he say?

**[22:43]** Allah (عز وجل) immortalized the words of Abdullah ibn Ubayy ibn Salul here in a negative way. Abdullah ibn Ubayy ibn Salul, he said when these two people started to fight, he said, la tunfiqu ala min indi rasoolillahi hatta yanfaddu min indi

**[22:59]** but don't spend on those that are with the messenger of Allah (ﷺ) until they go away. And then he said the words, wa in raja'na ila al-madina la yukhrijanna al-a'azzu min hal-adhal. And when we go back to Medina, the honored one will displace the humiliated one.

**[23:17]** But he speaks in third person. All right, the honored one referring to himself will displace, will remove the humiliated one. And he's indicating the Prophet (ﷺ). Here's the thing, Zayd ibn Arqam, he was there

**[23:32]** and he heard what he said. Because he's one of the Ansar and he's one of the prominent tribes of the Ansar. And again, Abdullah ibn Rawaha is respected amongst the Ansar. So Zayd ibn Arqam, he heard what he said. And Zayd ibn Arqam, when he heard that,

**[23:49]** he said, wallahi, I'm going to tell the Prophet (ﷺ) what he said. And Abdullah ibn Ubayy, he told him, basically, no, you're not, right? You're not going to tell the Prophet (ﷺ) what I said, you're just a kid. He dismissed him. And Zayd ibn Arqam said that, I swear by Allah,

**[24:08]** if it was my own father that said what you just said, I would tell the Prophet (ﷺ) what you just said. This is kufr, right? This is kufr of the highest order, disbelief of the highest order and treason. You intend to displace the Prophet (ﷺ) like there's no joking around about this.

**[24:25]** Abdullah ibn Ubayy, he kind of changes his posture towards him. And in one narration, he says, be quiet, I was just joking. Like it was just mazah, I wasn't serious, calm down. Because he starts to get worried about what this means if he goes and tells the Prophet (ﷺ)

**[24:42]** what he said. And he said, I swear by Allah, I'm going to tell the Prophet (ﷺ) what you said. So he goes to the Prophet (ﷺ), Zayd ibn Arqam (رضي الله عنه) said, I went to the Prophet (ﷺ) and I told the Prophet (ﷺ) about this munafiq, about this hypocrite

**[24:59]** and how he tried to separate the Muslims and then how he made that ultimate statement of kufr, right? That I am going to remove the Prophet (ﷺ) that the honored one will displace the humiliated one. And he's pretending to be a Muslim.

**[25:16]** So the Prophet (ﷺ), when he hears this, Umar ibn Khattab (رضي الله عنه) was waiting for the opportunity. He says, Ya Rasulullah, let me finish him. Prophet (ﷺ) says, don't do it, Ya Umar. I don't want people to say that Muhammad (ﷺ)

**[25:32]** yaqtulu ashabah. The Prophet (ﷺ) kills his companions. By the way, this shows you that sometimes, right? Keeping into taking into consideration how others will perceive your religion and letting that weigh on your actions

**[25:48]** in a way that's not unprincipled is actually sunnah. That's a mouthful that I just said. But the point is, is that like, you know, some might say, oh, sell out. You didn't do the haq because I'm talking about when someone else does something like you didn't perform, you didn't go out and do what you had to do. And we don't care what they say.

**[26:03]** The Prophet (ﷺ) says, I don't want them to say that Muhammad (ﷺ) used to kill his companions. He deserves to be killed. I mean, by any system, Abdullah ibn Ubayy ibn Salul deserves to be killed at this point. But I don't want them to say that Muhammad (ﷺ) used to kill his companions. When it's not a matter of obligation, right?

**[26:21]** And it's not a matter of halal and haram. It's not compromising the foundations of the religion. There are matters in which a leader can take these types of judgment calls. And that's the evidence that the ulama will use while looking at the Prophet (ﷺ). The Prophet (ﷺ)

**[26:36]** had just grounds to kill him, but the Prophet (ﷺ) opted for grace. Nothing of the Sharia is undermined in this process, but he was thinking about the implications on the da'wah. So when someone says, I don't care what anybody says, I'm gonna do what I'm gonna do.

**[26:52]** Sometimes it's true. Like you don't sacrifice your religion for anybody else and you don't relinquish your religion for anybody else. That's true. But there is some consideration on the implications of the da'wah. The Prophet (ﷺ) said, no. He said, people will say that

**[27:08]** Muhammad (ﷺ) used to kill his companions. And he said, let me hear him out. So the Prophet (ﷺ) made it back to Medina and Abdullah ibn Ubayy ibn Salul kind of missed out on the opportunity. His plot failed. So the Prophet (ﷺ) called Abdullah ibn Ubayy

**[27:23]** and he called Zayd ibn Arqam. Fair trial, right? He said to him (ﷺ), did you say what he says that you said? Is it true? And what does, you know, what does Allah (سبحانه وتعالى) tell us? And what of course is mentioned, right?

**[27:41]** Fa ja'u fa halafu billah. Right, they came and they swore by Allah that they didn't say that. Okay, so in the Prophet (ﷺ) says that the signs of a hypocrite are four, right? Three or four, the khasam al-fajr and the fourth one. When he argues, he transgresses.

**[27:57]** When he speaks, he lies. When he makes a promise, he breaks a promise. And when he is entrusted, he violates the trust. And in one narration, when he argues, he transgresses argument or he transgresses in his argument. This is one of those things. If you're a hypocrite and you lie,

**[28:13]** then you don't fear Allah (سبحانه وتعالى) when you lie. You'll start saying wallahi and whatever it is, right? You'll start attaching oaths and you'll start embellishing the lie to get yourself out of the situation. And so he came and he swore by Allah

**[28:29]** to the Prophet (ﷺ). I didn't say that. And Zayd is sitting there and saying, Ya Rasulullah, he's lying. Prophet (ﷺ) says, I'm gonna take him at his word.

**[28:46]** I'm gonna take him at his word. At the end of the day, he swears by Allah, he didn't say it. I'll take him at his word. And so Zayd ibn Arqam, he says that I was so embarrassed. Fadakhalani min thalika hamm.

**[29:04]** I was so overtaken by grief and anxiety over what just happened because I felt like I was made out to be a liar. Right? Like it's my word versus Abdullah ibn Ubayy ibn Salul. I thought I was doing something to do the right thing,

**[29:21]** say what I had to say. And I found myself in a very difficult situation. So Zayd ibn Arqam started to make du'a that Allah (سبحانه وتعالى) will send revelation to the Prophet (ﷺ)

**[29:37]** because at the end of the day, the only thing that will determine this is Wahi that will conclusively remove any doubt is revelation. Right? So he wanted Allah (سبحانه وتعالى) to exonerate him with revelation. It's not like the Prophet (ﷺ) is treating him differently and the Prophet (ﷺ) said, go away Zayd, you lied.

**[29:54]** But Zayd is just really upset that feels like Ibn Ubayy got away with it. And at the same time, if he's telling the truth and that means I'm not telling the truth, that's how he's calculating it. And he said on top of that, fa jalastu fil bayt, fa qala li ammi, he said, so I went home and my uncle said to me,

**[30:12]** pause, ammi here can mean three things. It can mean his uncle, I'm sorry, his uncle Thabit ibn Qays, some of the scholars say Thabit ibn Qays is his uncle, or it can mean another paternal uncle,

**[30:28]** or it can mean Abdullah ibn Rawaha, when he says ammi, it's a way of respecting Abdullah ibn Rawaha, who's like his father. That to me seems to be the most plausible explanation that it's Abdullah ibn Rawaha that's talking to him, because he's clearly the most involved in his life throughout this.

**[30:44]** So on top of being embarrassed about the situation, he said that I sat at home and ammi, my uncle said to me, ma arata illa an kathabaka rasool Allahi (ﷺ) wa maqatak, like you couldn't find anything to do except that the Prophet (ﷺ),

**[31:00]** right, considers you to be a liar and is displeased with you, wa kathabaka al muslimoon, and the Muslims consider you to be a liar, like he's blaming him, he's mad at him, like this is embarrassing now for the family too. Qala fa ataani rasool Allahi (ﷺ),

**[31:16]** he said the Prophet (ﷺ) came to me, fa araka udhni, and the Prophet (ﷺ) came to me and like took my ear like this, wa dahika fee wajhi, and the Prophet (ﷺ) laughed in my face, now the laugh of the Prophet (ﷺ) was what?

**[31:32]** What was the laugh of the Prophet (ﷺ)? A really, really big smile, so the Prophet (ﷺ) would not make noise when he would laugh, he just had a smile that would show his back teeth, like it's a reassuring smile, like I know you're going through a hard time, just wait,

**[31:47]** Allah (سبحانه وتعالى) may exonerate, but like I know, right, the Prophet (ﷺ) is making calculations and he's showing him that he's not mad at him. said nothing in the world made me happier than when the Prophet (ﷺ)

**[32:02]** did that, right? Like the Prophet (ﷺ) came to me and he like, you know, grabbed my ear and smiled, laughed in my face like, sorry. Okay. Then he says, Thumma ataani Abu Bakr. So then Abu Bakr came to me. And he said to me,

**[32:18]** Ma qala laka Rasool Allah (ﷺ) What did the Prophet (ﷺ) say to you? He said, actually, Ma qala illa an'araka uthuni wa dahika fee wajhi (ﷺ) And he said, he actually didn't say anything. He just grabbed my ear,

**[32:33]** played with my ear a bit, and he smiled in my face. So Abu Bakr (رضي الله عنه) said, Abshir. Abshir is a hard word to translate. When the Arabs say Abshir, what do they mean? Like, don't worry, good news is coming. Right, Abshir, Abshir.

**[32:49]** Right? So he said Abshir. So that's strange. Then he said, Umar (رضي الله عنه) came to me and he said, what did the Prophet (ﷺ) say to you? So I said to Umar (رضي الله عنه), the Prophet (ﷺ) just touched my ear and he smiled in my face. He said, that's it? He said, that's it.

**[33:05]** He said, Umar said Abshir. You know, inshaAllah, things will be all right. Don't worry. You're good. So he said that, I just sat at home and he said, until Allah (سبحانه وتعالى) revealed what?

**[33:22]** The first eight verses of Surah Al-Munafiqun. So now you know, sabab an-nuzul, the reason for the revelation, right? The means by which this revelation happened and the context of these ayat. Iza ja'aka al-munafiquna qalu nashhadu innaka la rasool Allah

**[33:39]** When the hypocrites come to the Prophet (ﷺ) and they say, ya rasool Allah, we bear witness that you are rasool Allah. Wallahu ya'lamu innaka la rasool Allah, knows that you're the messenger of Allah. Wallahu yashhadu inna al-munafiquna lakadibun. Allah bears witness that the hypocrites are indeed the liars. And then you come to the end of this, of course,

**[33:55]** verses seven and eight, which are specific to the incident. Hum alladhina yaquluna la tunfiquwa min indi rasool Allah hatta yanfadhu wa lillahi khaza'inus samawati wal-ardhi walakinna al-munafiquna la yafqahun. They are the ones who say, do not spend anything on those,

**[34:11]** the migrants with the Prophet (ﷺ), so that they'll break away from him, but to Allah belong the treasures of the heavens and the earth. Yet the hypocrites do not comprehend. Yaquluna la inraja'na ila al-madina la yukhrijana al-a'azu minha al-adhal

**[34:27]** That they say that if we return to Medina, the Honorable One will certainly expel the one who is inferior, who is humiliated. Walillahi al-izzatu wa li rasoolihi wa lil mu'mineena walakinna al-munafiquna la ya'lamun And to Allah belongs all honor

**[34:43]** and to the messenger and to the believers, yet the hypocrites do not know. Fada'ahum rasool Allahi (ﷺ) faqara'aha alayhim And so the Prophet (ﷺ) called them back to him and the Prophet (ﷺ) read these verses that were said

**[35:00]** and the Prophet (ﷺ) said to Zayd, Ya Zayd, inna Allaha qad sadaqaka O Zayd, Allah (سبحانه وتعالى) confirmed what you said. Allah confirmed what you said. SubhanAllah, something similar to Zayd ibn Haritha, right?

**[35:16]** Allah (سبحانه وتعالى) honored him through the revelation and his difficulty. And of course, when it came to our mother Aisha (رضي الله عنها), she was exonerated through the verses in Surah Al-Nur and Hadithatul Ifk. So likewise, when it came to Zayd ibn Arqam,

**[35:33]** these were the verses that exonerated Zayd ibn Arqam. So after that, they said to the Prophet (ﷺ) what are you going to do to Abdullah ibn Ubayy ibn Salul? Prophet (ﷺ) said, nothing.

**[35:50]** Nothing. What happens? After those verses, Abdullah ibn Ubayy ibn Salul really plummeted in the eyes of the people in Medina. SubhanAllah, like people looked down on him, they mocked him, they scolded him, and his reputation took a major hit.

**[36:08]** And in fact, the Prophet (ﷺ) showing him no attention, paying him no attention and moving on made him even lower, right? Then the failed slander of the wife of the Prophet (ﷺ), it's all in the same time. Slander of Aisha (رضي الله عنها) after Banu al-Mustalaq.

**[36:26]** Then he put out the most painful incident in Medina, slandering the wife of the Prophet (ﷺ). That didn't do anything either, right? In the sense that all it did was it kept lowering him and lowering him and lowering him in society. So it was Zayd ibn Arqam who was exonerated

**[36:43]** through these verses of Surah Al-Munafiqun and extremely powerful incident. This is the most famous incident of his life. There's another incident where revelation came down about Zayd ibn Arqam (رضي الله عنه). He says,

**[36:59]** Ata nasun al-nabiyyi (ﷺ) faqala ba'duhum li ba'dh intaliqoo bina ila hadha rajul fa in yaku nabiyyan fanahnu as'adu al-nasi bihi wa in yaku malakan na'ish fee janahihi that, you know, let's go to this man,

**[37:16]** if he is a prophet, then we will be most fortunate with him. And if he is an angel, then we'll live under his wing. So they went to the Prophet (ﷺ) and they called out to him and they started to call out to the Prophet (ﷺ)

**[37:34]** ja'alu yunadunahu wahum fee hujra They called out to the Prophet (ﷺ) while the Prophet (ﷺ) was in his hujurat ya Muhammad, ya Muhammad wa anzalallahu a'adzu wajal inna alladhina yunadunakum min warai alhujurati akhtaruhum la ya'qiloon that, verily, those who call out to you

**[37:50]** from behind the hujurat, most of them do not know any better. Okay? So this was also something with Zayd ibn Arqam and this was one of the times that the Prophet (ﷺ) said, laqad sadaqallahu qawlaka ya Zayd

**[38:05]** that, verily, Allah (سبحانه وتعالى) has confirmed your words, O Zayd. Zayd had conveyed to the Prophet (ﷺ) what had happened and the Prophet (ﷺ) confirmed those, or the Prophet (ﷺ) said that Allah (عز وجل) considered Zayd to be of the truthful. So he's someone who's exonerated by revelation

**[38:22]** which already shows you his rank. There are a few narrations that I want to point to that he narrates than being alongside the Prophet (ﷺ). So what makes him unique is that he saw the development of the religion over time.

**[38:38]** And some of the things that we know about how to pray, some of the things we know about Eid, some of the things we know about Jumu'ah, some of the things we know about Du'a, we take from Zayd ibn Arqam. So one of those things, he says that during the salah,

**[38:55]** kana ahaduna yukallimu arrajula ila janbihi fissalat that we used to speak to those that were next to us in salah. I think I've spoken about this before that back in the day, or when salah was first legislated, when someone walked in, salamu alaykum, walaikum assalam,

**[39:11]** you sneeze, alhamdulillah, yarhamukallah, right? No real long talk, but just like in tawaf and hajj, right? People can talk to each other and tawaf is like salah. And so he says that we used to speak to each other.

**[39:27]** We used to give salam to each other during salah. Of course, one of the famous incidents that took place there was that there's a man, a companion that walked into the masjid one day, went in to pray, he said, salamu alaykum. No one said walaikum assalam. He's like, what's wrong with these guys?

**[39:42]** He sneezed, he said alhamdulillah, no one said yarhamukallah. He said, mabikum, what's wrong with everybody? And the sahaba were like, this guy is, talk about distraction in salah. All right. So after the salah, he was like extremely irritated.

**[40:00]** The sahaba were like really nervous, like what's gonna happen? So the Prophet (ﷺ), he simply stood up after the prayer and he said that whoever was speaking during the prayer, Allah used to allow this for us, but since then Allah (سبحانه وتعالى) has prohibited it and now we do not speak in our prayer.

**[40:16]** Alhamdulillah, can you guys imagine if we could speak in salah and you had your cell phones? Right, I mean, we're still struggling to get people not to use their phones in Jumu'ah, right? Which by the way, you can't use your phone in Jumu'ah in case you didn't know that. This would be a good time to make that disclaimer.

**[40:32]** But imagine like if in salah people could talk. I mean, we have a problem with tawaf selfie videos for six of the seven rounds, right? Those are the religious ones, right? That do only six or seven rounds on the phone. But like, can you imagine that? So Zayd is the one who narrates,

**[40:47]** he says that we were there and then Allah (سبحانه وتعالى) revealed, Wa qumu lillahi qanitin. Allah (سبحانه وتعالى) revealed and stand up with devotion to Allah and that was the prohibition of speaking during the prayer. So Zayd ibn Arqam was the one who narrates these incidents. He also narrates many of the hadith about fadl al-ansar,

**[41:06]** the virtues of the Ansar. And one of them will be related to an incident that takes place towards the end of his life. He says (رضي الله عنه), that the Ansar were with the Prophet (ﷺ) and they said, Ya Rasulullah, li kulli nabiyyin atba'

**[41:22]** Oh, Messenger of Allah, every prophet has his followers. Wa inna qad ittaba'nak And we have followed you, O Messenger of Allah. wa fad'u allaha an yaj'ala atba'ana minna So make du'a that our followers will be considered from amongst us.

**[41:39]** Meaning our children, our children will be considered from the Ansar as well. They'll get the du'a of the Ansar as well. So the Prophet (ﷺ), he made du'a for the Ansar and the children of the Ansar and the children of the children of the Ansar.

**[41:56]** So for the generations of the Ansar, the Prophet (ﷺ) prayed for them all and the blessing remains within the Ansar. He also narrates a very famous hadith. He says that we were with the Prophet (ﷺ) and Zayd belongs to the highest class of the Ansar

**[42:11]** because the person who's raising him is Abdullah ibn Rawaha. So he's in that rank, right? And he's a chief. Says that we were walking with the Prophet (ﷺ) and suddenly the Prophet (ﷺ) stopped and he said, ma antum juz'un min mi'ati alfi juz'in

**[42:29]** mimman yaridu alayya al hawd. Very interesting hadith. He said, you are not even a hundred thousandth, a hundred thousandth of those who will come to me at my hawd, at my fountain on the day of judgment.

**[42:46]** You don't even equal a hundred thousand, right? Meaning a hundred thousandth, right? A fraction of those that will come. So this is a hopeful hadith. The Prophet (ﷺ) is saying, there's a whole ummah coming after you.

**[43:01]** And one of the ways the Prophet (ﷺ) used to comfort the Ansar was that they would be close to him at the hawd. They'd be close to him at his fountain on the day of judgment, which matches, right? They were the first ones to receive the Prophet (ﷺ) and the companion, so he will be receiving them. And he used to make them patient. Like people will give preference to others in leadership

**[43:18]** after I'm gone, but you're gonna be close to me at the hawd. But when he says to them, by the way, you are not even a hundred thousandth of those that will come to me at the hawd. So Zayd was asked by the narrator, how many were you with the Prophet (ﷺ) on that day? He said, we were seven or 800 people.

**[43:35]** May Allah (سبحانه وتعالى) make us amongst that large group of people that will come to the hawd of the Prophet (ﷺ) to his fountain on that day. I'll mention two more narrations and I'll get back to his life, inshaAllah. He's also the one who narrates that while he was with the Prophet (ﷺ)

**[43:50]** that the time of relieving oneself came and the Prophet (ﷺ) said, inna hadhihil hushusha that verily these waste areas, which are the bathrooms at the time, are frequented by the shayateen. So when you enter into the place to relieve yourself,

**[44:07]** say, Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal khubuthi wal khaba'ith Oh Allah, I seek refuge in you from the male and the female of the devils. Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal khubuthi wal khaba'ith So this is a du'a that's narrated from Zayd ibn Al-Arqam. Just showing you that there's some famous hadith

**[44:24]** that you know that are actually narrated by him. The last one I'll give you then we'll get back to his life is one that has a beautiful du'a in it. And that's why I'll choose it, inshaAllah. There are multiple narrations. And he says, kana Rasulullahi (ﷺ) yu'allimuna hadhihil kalimat

**[44:41]** wa nahnu nu'allimukumuhun That the Prophet (ﷺ) used to teach us these words and so we're gonna teach you these words. Meaning we the companions learned these words from the Prophet (ﷺ). And so I will teach you these words as well. la'uhaddithukum illa ma kana Rasulullahi (ﷺ)

**[44:58]** haddathana bihi wayamuruna I will not tell you except what I heard the Prophet (ﷺ) used to teach us and command us to say. So he said the Prophet (ﷺ) used to command us to say, and you can repeat after me. Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal ajz

**[45:51]** wa da'watin la tustajab Now, I want you to actually memorize the hadith. Go online, it's easy to find it. Clip this part of the lecture out, whatever it is that you need to. But let's go through it inshaAllah

**[46:06]** because this is a du'a that he would say that we're taught to say at night and he says it with great emphasis that the Prophet (ﷺ) taught us to say this du'a and not to leave it.

**[46:37]** So these words, what they mean is, oh Allah, I seek refuge in you from incapacity, from laziness, from miserliness, from cowardice, from the effects of old age and from the torment of the grave. Oh Allah, give my soul its righteousness

**[46:53]** and purify it for you are the most capable one of purifying it. You are its guardian and you are its Lord. Oh Allah, I seek refuge in you from a soul that is not satisfied, from a heart that is not humble, from knowledge that is of no benefit and from a supplication that is not answered.

**[47:09]** So this is a very beautiful du'a and it's narrated throughout multiple collections with slight variation in the last word. So this is also from Zayd ibn Arqam (رضي الله عنه). So, you continue with his life story. Few more incidents, inshaAllah,

**[47:24]** as we start to wrap up for Salatul Isha. He was one of those people who attended the Battle of Mu'tah, which was a very painful battle in the life of the Prophet (ﷺ). He says, again, kuntu yateeman fee hijri ibn Rawaha

**[47:41]** fa kharaja bi ma'ahu ila mu'tah murdifi ala haqeebati rahlihi. He said that, I was an orphan in the care of Abdullah ibn Rawaha and he took me with him to the Battle of Mu'tah and he carried me on the pad of his saddle.

**[47:57]** So he was there and he saw... a man who was like his father, martyred. Now, if you remember Mu'tah, and this of course connects to Usama ibn Zayd. Mu'tah was when the Romans had killed the messenger

**[48:13]** of the Messenger (ﷺ), and so the Prophet (ﷺ) sent an expedition out, because this was an act of war. Zayd ibn Haritha was the first carrier of the banner and Zayd ibn Haritha was killed. The Prophet (ﷺ) was watching it from the minbar, meaning Jibreel (عليه السلام)

**[48:29]** was telling him what was happening. And the Prophet (ﷺ) said, Zayd (رضي الله عنه) just fell. Ja'far (رضي الله عنه) just assumed the banner. And then he said, Ja'far (رضي الله عنه) just fell. Abdullah ibn Rawaha just assumed the banner. And then Abdullah ibn Rawaha,

**[48:44]** he went deep into the battlefield. Actually, if you go to Mu'tah, and I did a mini documentary, if you go to Yaqeen's channel, I actually went to Mu'tah and I filmed there. If you go to Mu'tah, Zayd's grave and Ja'far's grave are relatively close. Abdullah ibn Rawaha is ahead.

**[49:01]** And one of the reasons is because he plunged forward (رضي الله عنه) before he was killed. And the Prophet (ﷺ) broke down crying after these three men were martyred. And he said, and Khalid (رضي الله عنه) took the banner,

**[49:16]** wa huwa sayfun min suyufillah, and he is a sword from the swords of Allah. So Zayd ibn Al-Arqam was there at Mu'tah when Abdullah ibn Rawaha was martyred. So this was a major test in his life, as it was a test for those who, of course, were not there.

**[49:31]** This hurt Medina quite a bit, right? Usama ibn Zayd was deeply in pain. The children of Ja'far, we take the whole jurisprudence of how to deal with the family of the deceased through how the Prophet (ﷺ) dealt with the children of the shuhada' back in Medina.

**[49:48]** So this was one major test in his life. The next major test in his life, and it's one of the miracles that is narrated for him, and it's in multiple authentic narrations, from Anisa, from his daughter, in some of the narrations,

**[50:04]** that the Prophet (ﷺ) went to visit Zayd ibn Al-Arqam because Zayd ibn Al-Arqam actually went blind towards the end of the life of the Prophet (ﷺ). So the Prophet (ﷺ) went to visit him. Very painful because Zayd is a young man.

**[50:19]** So as the Prophet (ﷺ) went to visit him, he said, ar-ayti ya Zayd, in kaanat a'inaka lima bihima kaifa tasna? Prophet (ﷺ) said, O Zayd, if your eyes remain this way, meaning if you stay blind for the rest of your life,

**[50:35]** how are you going to react? If you don't recover your eyesight? Which shows you, as the ulama mentioned, that there are multiple ways that you can comfort, prepare the one who's grieving, and that takes, by the way, like a pastoral touch, right? To know what to say, how to say, how to prepare.

**[50:52]** The Prophet (ﷺ) would make du'a for your health, but Prophet (ﷺ) knew what he was doing when he was talking to individual companions. So he said, what would you do if you were going to be blind for the rest of your life? Qala asbir wa ihtasib. So Zayd gave the perfect answer. He said, I'll be patient, and I'll seek the reward from Allah (سبحانه وتعالى).

**[51:10]** So the Prophet (ﷺ) said, in fa'alta dakhalta aljanna? If you do so, you will enter paradise. And he said, talqa allaha wala dhanba lak? And you'll meet Allah with no sin on you.

**[51:25]** Of course, this is taken from multiple hadith where the Prophet (ﷺ) mentioned hadith Qudsi, that if I take the two eyes, the eyesight of my servants, and he's patient, then I will reward him with jannah. So it's the blessing of vision.

**[51:41]** May Allah (سبحانه وتعالى) preserve our eyesight, and may Allah (عز وجل) preserve the reward of those who lost their eyesight, and were patient. Allahumma ameen. So this is one of those narrations, but it continues, and that is that after the Prophet (ﷺ) passed away,

**[51:58]** raddallahu alayhi basarahu, Allah (عز وجل) actually restored the vision of Zayd (رضي الله عنه). So Zayd went blind for some time towards the end of the life of the Prophet (ﷺ) and then after the Prophet (ﷺ) passed away, Allah (سبحانه وتعالى) blessed him to actually have his sight restored.

**[52:14]** And the implication is that the one who intends to act in a certain way in trial and tragedy, even if the tragedy is lifted, the reward is still maintained. So he did go through this, and he was someone who went on to become

**[52:30]** a bastion of knowledge after the Prophet (ﷺ) passed away. Someone who the other companions referred to in regards to his ilm. There's a narration from Abu al-Minhal. He says, sa'altu al-bara'a anas-sarf. I asked Bara' about currency exchange. And he said,

**[52:46]** sal Zayd ibn Arqam, fa'innahu khayrun minni wa a'lam. Go to Zayd ibn Arqam, he is more knowledgeable than I am, and he is better than I am. So he's someone who became an authority in scholarship. He was someone who, when fitna broke out between the companions,

**[53:02]** he sided firmly with Sayyidina Ali (رضي الله عنه). So of course, in the fitna, you had the tribulation that broke out. You had the side of Ali, you had the side of Muawiyah. You had those that kind of remove themselves

**[53:17]** from all of it, right? And so they wanted no part to do with Muslims that end up fighting amongst each other. And you had some that don't fall neatly within a category, right? They were kind of, you know, between the ranks in that regard. Zayd is one of those who stood alongside

**[53:33]** Ali (رضي الله عنه). And he said, because I heard the Prophet (ﷺ) say, man kuntu mawlaahu fa'aliyyu mawlaahu. That whoever loves me, or whoever I am a close friend of, love it to, then Ali (رضي الله عنه) is also close friend to him.

**[53:49]** Of course, this is Sunni scholarship, by the way. So this is not something to be taken as like an exaggeration. He is someone who loved Ahlul Bayt and who praised Ahlul Bayt, the family of the Prophet (ﷺ) and who narrated many of the virtues of the family of the Prophet (ﷺ). Now, if you remember,

**[54:04]** he narrated the narrations about the virtues of the Ansar. And there's one more hadith I'll mention here, which is in a Tirmidhi, that when Anas ibn Malik (رضي الله عنه) his family,

**[54:22]** many of them were killed in the massacre of Al-Harra, which was the massacre of Medina. And he wrote a message, kataba ila Anas ibn Malik, yu'azihi, he wrote a message to him, consoling him,

**[54:38]** feeman ulseeba min ahlihi wabani ammihi yawmul harra basically to comfort him with everything that had happened on that day. And he wrote to him and saying, inni ubashiruka bi bushra minallahi inni sami'atu rasoolallahi (ﷺ)

**[54:54]** yaqul, I give you the glad tidings from Allah that I heard the Prophet (ﷺ) say, allahumma ghafir lil ansar that, oh Allah, forgive the Ansar, wa li dharariyi lansar and to the offspring of the Ansar and to the offspring of their offspring. So may Allah (عز وجل) forgive all of your offspring.

**[55:12]** So he was giving him the comfort in the midst of that fitna. So again, when fitna takes place, even of course, we love all of the companions of the Prophet (ﷺ) and we abhor fitna as a whole, right? But at the end of the day, you see sort of the hearts

**[55:27]** and the way that these people interacted with the text and what they heard from the Prophet (ﷺ) directly. So he would narrate. He generally was not someone that fought. He was more of a scholar and taught in the masjid. He settled in Kufa in Iraq.

**[55:42]** And when he got old, because he lived to be very old, when people would come to him and they would ask him for hadith from the Prophet (ﷺ). So Ibn Abi Layla, he says, Qultu li Zayd ibn Arqam, Hadithna an Rasul Allah (ﷺ). Ibn Abi Layla, a famous scholar,

**[55:57]** said, I went to Zayd and I said, tell us what you heard from the Prophet (ﷺ). Qala kabirna wa nasina wal hadithu an Rasul Allah (ﷺ) al-shadid. He said, we've gotten old and sometimes I forget now. And speaking on behalf of the Prophet (ﷺ) is a severe thing. So at this point, I'm not going to share any more

**[56:16]** because I'm at a point where my memory is not what it used to be. And so he died a quiet death (رضي الله عنه) in Kufa. Some say that it was right before the murder of al-Husayn, the murder of al-Husayn (رضي الله عنه) in Kufa.

**[56:31]** Some say it was right after it and he was grieved over it. But the point is he died at that time (رضي الله عنه). And of course, the massacre took place in al-Iraq and that's where he passed away. And some of the students became, are of the greatest tabi'een, Ibn Abi Layla, Abu Amr al-Shaybani,

**[56:47]** Tawus al-Qaysan, Abu Ishaq al-Shaybani, Atta ibn Abi Rabah, the great Mufti of Mecca from Africa. All of them learned under him and they narrated his narrations. And he had over 90 hadiths,

**[57:03]** 90 hadiths from the Prophet (ﷺ). So up to a hundred hadiths from the Prophet (ﷺ) which is very significant. And those hadiths include again, as I said, some of the ways that we live our lives as Muslims. So we ask Allah (سبحانه وتعالى) to be pleased with Zayd, to accept it from him.

**[57:20]** May Allah (سبحانه وتعالى) be pleased with all of the companions of the Prophet (ﷺ). May Allah send his peace and blessings upon the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) and his family. And may Allah (عز وجل) include us amongst that legion of people that followed him and gather us with him (ﷺ)

**[57:36]** and with those noble people at the Hawd. Allahumma ameen. Allahumma ameen. We will stop there and we will continue next week. Jazakumullah khairan. Wassalamu alaikum warahmatullahi wabarakatuh.
