**[0:00]** A'udhu Billahi Minash Shaitanir Rajeem Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem Alhamdulillahi Rabbil Alameen, wa laa udwana illa a'la al-dhalameen, wa al-'aqeebatu lilmuttaqeen Allahumma salli wa sallim wa barik ala abdika wa rasulika Muhammad ﷺ wa ala alihi wa sahbihi

**[0:20]** wa sallim wa tasliman kathira. So inshallah ta'ala tonight we're going to be speaking about the adopted grandson of the Prophet ﷺ. And I actually wanted to, subhanAllah, start off with a reflection. Is anyone in here named Usama?

**[0:35]** We got any Usamas here? Alright, none of the sisters are named Usama, right? Alhamdulillah, good. I remember subhanAllah when 9-11 happens and I specifically remember a conversation right

**[0:52]** after 9-11 where a father was asking for permission to change his son's name from Usama because of the danger of being named Usama in this country in a post 9-11 world. And subhanAllah I can explicitly remember growing up with more Usamas prior to 9-11

**[1:11]** than after 9-11, right? Like you look back at how people would name their children before September 11th and it was actually a pretty common name. And then after September 11th it's like, whatever you do, don't name your kid Usama because that's going to attract some sort of unwanted attention and hardship.

**[1:29]** And in that process, I'm thinking because one of the best things that happens to me as someone who teaches the lives of the companions of the Prophet ﷺ is that when I go somewhere in the world and someone comes up to me and says, I named my kid so-and-so after I heard

**[1:46]** your lecture about so-and-so. And I say, alhamdulillah, may Allah make your child like that person. May Allah azzawajal allow that niyyah, that intention to materialize. And so my goal is that someone's going to name their kid Usama after this, inshaAllah ta'ala.

**[2:01]** And to speak about Usama ibn Zayd radiAllahu ta'ala anhuma is incredibly special because this is the first grandson of the Prophet ﷺ in a sense. What do I mean by that? Obviously we know that the ruling around tabanni, around attributing someone to you as an adopted

**[2:22]** son changed later on in Islam. But when Usama was born, his name was Usama ibn Zayd ibn Muhammad ﷺ. And he was treated like the grandson of the Prophet ﷺ. And if you go back and you watch the lecture on al-Hassan radiAllahu ta'ala anhu or

**[2:39]** al-Husayn radiAllahu ta'ala anhu, frequently Usama radiAllahu anhu is the third in those narrations. So the Prophet ﷺ fully treated him like his grandson and he loved him so much ﷺ that his nickname is actually the beloved, the son of the beloved of the beloved ﷺ.

**[3:01]** Follow it again, Hibbu Rasulullah, the beloved, the beloved, the son of the beloved. Because Zayd radiAllahu anhu's nickname was Hibbu Rasulullah ﷺ, the beloved one of the Prophet ﷺ. And the Prophet ﷺ is al-Habib ﷺ.

**[3:18]** He is the beloved to us all ﷺ. And so his name is the beloved, the son of the beloved of the beloved ﷺ. His entire existence is one that becomes a focal point of such intense love to the Prophet ﷺ.

**[3:33]** And it is incredible how it's as if the world, when you say the world conspires, we just say that's the qadr of Allah ﷻ. There's no world conspiring. This is just the aja'ib, the strange things of the qadr of Allah ﷻ, the divine decree of Allah ﷻ, how everything happens in a way to allow for this child to be born in

**[3:51]** the presence of the Prophet ﷺ and to gain such a special status. You see families are built, you know, usually, right? Husband, wife, child, and especially in those societies, there are tribes that marry either

**[4:07]** within the tribe or close to the tribe. There are predictable ways that you can trace how a person comes into a family. Nothing about this family that was convened around the Prophet ﷺ is quote unquote normal. It's all so amazing and so strange.

**[4:25]** And it starts with the mother, Baraka, Umm Ayman, radiAllahu ta'ala anha, who was the Abyssinian woman, the woman from Habesha, that was purchased as a slave in Suq al-'Uqad. So Suq al-'Uqad was the main marketplace in Mecca at the time of the Prophet ﷺ growing

**[4:45]** up. That's where everything happened was in Suq al-'Uqad. They sold products and they sold people too. That's where the slave market was as well. So Usama radiAllahu ta'ala anhu's story intersects from both of his parents with the central place in Mecca, Suq al-'Uqad.

**[5:01]** Abdul Muttalib, the grandfather of the Prophet ﷺ, purchased Baraka, this young girl who was a slave from Abyssinia, and gifted her to his son, Abdullah.

**[5:16]** Abdullah, the father of the Prophet ﷺ. Baraka was the only slave that Abdullah had. The only possession that he had was this young girl. As a result of that, she ends up being somewhat like the older sister, nanny, and second mother

**[5:35]** to the Prophet ﷺ. Because she's the only one that's around when the Prophet ﷺ is born. Abdullah goes out to Ash-Sham shortly after the marriage to Amina, the mother of the Prophet ﷺ. Two months into that travel, Amina sees the dream where there's a light that is coming

**[5:54]** from her abdomen that is shining upon Ash-Sham. May Allah ﷻ liberate all of it. Allahumma Ameen. And Baraka is there to hear what is happening with the mother of the Prophet ﷺ. She's witnessing the mother of the Prophet ﷺ walk around with him ﷺ in her stomach

**[6:12]** and all of the amazing Barakat, the blessings that are to come. So she's truly Baraka. Everything about her is blessing. She was there and in some of the narrations, I couldn't find a primary source for this.

**[6:27]** She's the one that actually gives Amina the news of the death of her husband. But she was certainly there and certainly consoling the mother of the Prophet ﷺ. While the Prophet ﷺ is in his mother's stomach, the tears, the pain, the tragedy, the type

**[6:44]** of news that sometimes causes a woman to miscarry, it's all there and you have her there comforting and consoling the mother of the Prophet ﷺ. She's there to physically grab the Prophet ﷺ when he's born. The greatest occasion, right, in this world, 1500 years ago when the Prophet ﷺ comes

**[7:03]** into this world from a hijri perspective, comes into this world ﷺ. She's the only other person in the room that we know of when the Prophet ﷺ is born. She is there when he's born ﷺ. She's the only one there when the mother dies of the Prophet ﷺ and now she's there

**[7:23]** to console the Prophet ﷺ. So SubhanAllah, think about the proximity to this all. Like she's consoling the mother of the Prophet ﷺ when the father of the Prophet ﷺ dies. She's celebrating when the Prophet ﷺ is born and now she's consoling the Prophet ﷺ

**[7:38]** when his mother passes away. So she's the most stable and consistent figure in the life of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and Rasulullah ﷺ loved her, loved her so much.

**[7:54]** And SubhanAllah, there is almost nothing that could be said to the joy that the Prophet ﷺ felt around her and the Prophet ﷺ saying, ummi ba'da ummi, my mother after my mother. And he would say, hadhihi baqiyatu ahli, this is what's left of my family.

**[8:09]** It is her, right? And she immediately believed in him ﷺ. She followed him around ﷺ every point of his life. She's there. Now technically, by the way, the Prophet ﷺ inherited her but he freed her ﷺ.

**[8:26]** So she wasn't a slave of the Prophet ﷺ, right? Even though that's the inheritance of the time, right? But he freed her ﷺ and he treated her like a mother. The age gap is not that much different. So technically, she's about 13 years, 10 to 13 years older than the Prophet ﷺ.

**[8:46]** So she was young while she was around when this was all happening in the life of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. She is the woman that had the miracle that on the hijrah as she became thirsty that Allah

**[9:02]** ﷻ gave her the miracle of something that came down from the sky that she drank from and she said, wallahi, I was never thirsty again. After I drank from that bucket that came down from the heavens, she could fast on a long hot day and she never became thirsty.

**[9:18]** And some of the scholars mentioned that it is perhaps to that, that there's a connection to her long life. I mean, she outlived everybody. Almost to a point, subhanAllah, like she's there from before the beginning and after the end, right? And that is some of the barakah in her health.

**[9:35]** She's one of those that the Prophet ﷺ guaranteed al-jannah. She attended all of the expeditions with the Prophet ﷺ. She followed the Prophet ﷺ with the attentive eye. And when the Prophet ﷺ would say, oh my mother, how are you? She would say, ana bikhayr, I am well so long as Islam is well.

**[9:51]** Her life was about the Prophet ﷺ and the Prophet ﷺ loved her, adored her, right? That's the mom. The father, Zayd ibn Haritha, radiAllahu ta'ala anhu. Zayd, radiAllahu anhu, a young child who has a very normal life in Arabia.

**[10:13]** And one day he goes out with his mother on a journey and he was kidnapped by a tribe. And that tribe goes and takes him to Suq al-'Uqad and they sell him into slavery. So he wasn't born a slave. He was sold into slavery, radiAllahu ta'ala anhu, for 400 dirhams.

**[10:32]** For 400 dirhams. Wa sharauhu bi thamanin bakhsin, dirahim ma'duda. What a small price. 400 dirhams. And suddenly this child's life changes. He's away from his parents. His parents lost sight of him altogether.

**[10:49]** And Hakeem ibn Hizam, radiAllahu ta'ala anhu, purchased Zayd, radiAllahu ta'ala anhu, from Suq al-'Uqad and then gifted him to his aunt Khadija bint Khuwaylid, radiAllahu ta'ala anha.

**[11:05]** And immediately the Prophet ﷺ became very attached to Zayd. So Zayd is 10 years younger than the Prophet ﷺ. And the Prophet ﷺ loved him so much that Khadija, radiAllahu ta'ala anha, noticed the immediate bond between the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and Zayd.

**[11:22]** And she said, do you love him, O Muhammad? And the Prophet ﷺ said, yes. She said, fa huwa lak, then he's yours. We know that what happens after that is that the father of Zayd eventually finds him and he tells him, come home now.

**[11:37]** And Zayd says, I'm not leaving Muhammad ﷺ. Like no. He's incredible. He's amazing. I would never leave his side. This is before Islam. And the Prophet ﷺ, with the agreement of the father, adopts Zayd as his own child.

**[11:55]** So formalizes and brings him into his own life ﷺ in that regard. So he was socially and legally regarded as the son of the Prophet ﷺ. Now at some point, this is an important note, the Prophet ﷺ sought to integrate the downtrodden

**[12:13]** into the highest classes of society. So at some point, Zayd was married to Hind bint al-Awam, who is the sister of al-Zubayr and a niece of Khadija. And then at some point, he was married to Umm Kulthum bint Uqba, who's the maternal sister

**[12:31]** of Uthman radiAllahu ta'ala anhu, an extremely wealthy family. So the Prophet ﷺ wanted to ensure that he would be completely treated like a full human being, honored the way that he's supposed to, breaking down some of the barriers of jahiliyyah in every single way.

**[12:49]** And even at some point, he was married to Durra, the daughter of Abu Lahab, out of all people. SubhanAllah. So the Prophet ﷺ sought to integrate Zayd before Islam and after Islam into the upper echelons of society so that he's not looked down upon because he is a slave, radiAllahu

**[13:06]** ta'ala anhu. So this shows you the Prophet's ﷺ intentions, his akhlaq even before Islam, his character even before Islam. And after Islam, we know of course that the Prophet ﷺ initially married Zayd to Zaynab bint Jahsh, also extremely noble woman, may Allah be pleased with them both, to try to

**[13:25]** break through the statuses of marriage. And that did not work out, but Zayd got something greater in return, which is he's the only companion of the Prophet ﷺ named in the Qur'an. The only named sahabi in the Qur'an.

**[13:40]** The only person whose name can be recited as ibadah in the Qur'an, subhanAllah. He accompanied the Prophet ﷺ in Ta'if, he accompanied the Prophet ﷺ on the worst day of his life, he accompanied the family of the Prophet ﷺ in the hijrah, and I'm

**[13:56]** going to finish this part because you can go back and watch Zayd and you can go back and watch Umm Ayman. But an important note from Aisha radiAllahu ta'ala anha, and she is Aisha bint Abi Bakr as-Siddiq (رضي الله عنهما), may Allah be pleased with them both. And she said, مَا بَعْثَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ

That the Prophet ﷺ never sent an army with Zayd except that Zayd was the leader of the army. And if Zayd was alive when the Prophet ﷺ died, he would have appointed him as the leader.

**[14:31]** That's Aisha, the daughter of Abu Bakr saying that. So it is not far from our possibility to say that if Zayd radiAllahu ta'ala anhu was not martyred, the first Khalifa of Islam might have been a freed slave named Zayd ibn Haritha radiAllahu ta'ala anhu,

**[14:50]** That's your mom and your dad. You're born to these two people. And subhanAllah, the rizq of it all, just pay attention. The rizq, the sustenance of Umm Ayman, to be brought to Suq al-'Uqad in Mecca to end up being like the mother of the Prophet ﷺ.

**[15:10]** And then Zayd to be taken from his family and put into that same slave market to end up being like the son of the Prophet ﷺ. Then the Prophet ﷺ to marry them to each other. What's going to come out of that household of love and of loyalty?

**[15:27]** And so the person we talk about today is Usama radiAllahu ta'ala anhu, the grandson by love, the grandson by adoption to the Prophet ﷺ. So first and foremost, what does the name Usama mean?

**[15:43]** It's actually a very rare name. You find one other person named Usama ibn Sharik radiAllahu ta'ala anhu, but the name Usama is a very rare name. It's not clear if the Prophet ﷺ is the one who named him, but that would be the assumption because he's coming into the household of the Prophet ﷺ

**[16:03]** and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ generally assumed that place. And so the Arab, they say that the lion is named three, al-Asad, a lion is named three. Al-Abbas is the name of a lion, wa huwa yuzamjir, the name of a lion when it roars.

**[16:23]** That's al-Abbas, right? Hamza is the name of the lion when it jumps on its prey. So actually if you look at the order of the uncles of the Prophet ﷺ, the two youngest uncles, Abbas and Hamza.

**[16:39]** Usama is when the lion has finished its prey. So they're actually all three different names for the lion in a different posture. So Abbas is the beginning, Hamza is the middle, Usama is the end.

**[16:54]** And his name was Usama radiAllahu ta'ala anhu, and the affection that he would receive from the Prophet ﷺ is incredible. How much did the Prophet ﷺ love him? Again, he was a full grandson of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, socially and legally initially, and then eventually just socially, right?

**[17:13]** But still treated that way. Usama radiAllahu ta'ala anhu was born and he was, and I'm going to say this because it's very important to show how the Prophet ﷺ is breaking the barriers and how the Prophet ﷺ is living through practice. Usama radiAllahu ta'ala anhu had the darkest of skin.

**[17:31]** He was described as having extremely dark skin. His father Zayd had a lighter brown complexion, and he had a very dark black complexion. May Allah ﷻ be pleased with them both. And the Prophet ﷺ was frequently seen holding him, and he would introduce him to society by practice ﷺ as his grandson.

**[17:54]** Okay? He's older than al-Hassan wal-Husayn. He's older than al-Hassan wal-Husayn, so he's technically the first one to come into this reality with the Prophet ﷺ. So he has all the memories of being hugged and kissed and held and riding on the back of the Prophet ﷺ, and riding on the animal with the Prophet ﷺ, and walking to the salah with the Prophet ﷺ.

**[18:14]** He has all the same memories that you'll see quoted from al-Hassan. And in fact, many of the narrations about al-Hassan radiAllahu ta'ala anhu are actually from Usama radiAllahu anhu, narrating about the life of the two of them. Because at some point it was Usama and then al-Hassan.

**[18:29]** Then came al-Husayn. Right? So when he says, That the Prophet ﷺ used to pick me and al-Hassan up.

**[18:47]** And he would say, Oh Allah, I love them, so love them. So he's likewise, whoever wants to love the Prophet ﷺ, love Usama ibn Zayd radiAllahu ta'ala anhu. He used to say,

**[19:03]** Oh Allah, have mercy on them, for indeed I have mercy on them. Like, as much as I love them, oh Allah, I want you to love these two. So some of the narrations are just Usama, some of them are just Usama and al-Hassan. And then some of them are Usama narrating about al-Hassan and al-Husayn, and vice versa.

**[19:21]** So you'll find, he says that I came to the Prophet ﷺ one night, and the Prophet ﷺ was wearing a cloak. And it was like, you could see two things moving in his cloak. So you don't know if they're cats, you don't know what it is. So the Prophet ﷺ said, so Usama radiAllahu ta'ala anhu said,

**[19:37]** يا رسول الله, what are those things? And the Prophet ﷺ opened up his cloak, and then al-Hassan and al-Husayn came running out. And he says, هَذَانِ ابْنَايَ That these two are my two sons.

**[19:55]** Oh Allah, I love these two, so love them. And love those that love them. And it's an authentic narration. What are some of the explicit memories he has? And this is where you'll start to see some of the figures that we've spoken about.

**[20:11]** Urwah narrates from Aisha. The Prophet ﷺ saw a snot on the face of Usama. These are like just grandfather moments. And the Prophet ﷺ came to clean the snot himself.

So Aisha said, I've got it, Ya Rasulullah, let me do it. And Aisha radiAllahu ta'ala anha says, the Prophet ﷺ said, يَا عَائِشَةُ أَحِبِّيهِ Oh Aisha, love him فَإِنِّي أُحِبُّهُ

**[20:45]** Because I love him. And the Prophet ﷺ proceeded to clean the snot himself ﷺ. Also Aisha radiAllahu ta'ala anha narrates, She basically has memories of being like a mother to him in the household. Because he's coming into the household of the Prophet ﷺ like a grandson.

**[21:04]** But it's very interesting because Umm Ayman is not mahram to the Prophet ﷺ. She's not Fatima radiAllahu ta'ala anha. So it's not like Umm Ayman is there the way that Fatima is always there with her Hassan al-Husayn. So sometimes Aisha has to step into mother role.

**[21:19]** And Aisha radiAllahu anha basically says, I didn't know how to do this stuff. I didn't have any kids of my own. I didn't know how to do some of this stuff.

**[21:35]** That the Prophet ﷺ asked me to bathe Usama radiAllahu anhu. So the implication of the narration is not just to wash his face, but to actually bathe him. And she said, but I didn't have any kids.

**[21:52]** I didn't have any kids myself. So I didn't know exactly how to wash a child, like how to bathe a child properly. So the Prophet ﷺ took him and she says, first I tried to, and the Prophet ﷺ said that this

**[22:07]** is not the way to wash him. And the Prophet ﷺ took him and the Prophet ﷺ bathed him himself. And the Prophet ﷺ said, That, you know, Usama is lucky.

**[22:24]** The translation of this is interesting. He's like, you know, Usama is a boy. And had Usama been a girl, the Prophet ﷺ is saying this, this is so sweet. He said, if he was a girl, then the Prophet ﷺ said, I would have adorned him and taken

**[22:40]** care of him like a little bride until I married him off. Like I would have dressed him up myself and I would have taken care of him the way that a grandfather takes care of a granddaughter. And this is multiple narrations where the Prophet ﷺ says, if he was a girl,

**[22:59]** That if Usama was a girl, I would have taken him and I would have beautified him and I would have adorned him or her in that case until I married my granddaughter off. So that's the love and the attachment that the Prophet ﷺ has to him. And that's the way that the Prophet ﷺ would tend to him himself ﷺ.

**[23:20]** And Aisha she says that one time Usama he walked into the front of the house of the Prophet ﷺ and he stumbled at the door and he hit his head, his forehead on the, I guess

**[23:37]** the equivalent of like a stair, like the threshold of the door and the blood started to come. And Aisha ﷺ said, I basically, you know, I was repulsed, like I didn't know what to do. Kind of froze up because the blood came on his face. And so the Prophet ﷺ said, get him.

**[23:52]** And she said, I got kind of stuck. So the Prophet ﷺ went and he picked him up and the Prophet ﷺ started to clean the face himself and he started to kiss the wound himself ﷺ with the blood on it, basically just like a parent, right? Trying to make him feel better. And the Prophet ﷺ made that same comment.

**[24:09]** If he was a girl, I would have adorned him and I would have beautified him and taken care of him until I married him off. Like that's the sensitivity that I treat this boy of mine, this grandson of mine. That's the love that I have for Usama ﷺ.

**[24:24]** So how beloved was he? All right, something you need to know about these ahadith. Context matters. So in one sitting you could have the Prophet ﷺ say something that might seem on the outward level contradictory, right, to another narration, but you reconcile them by just understanding

**[24:44]** context. The Prophet ﷺ one time was sitting with Ali and al-Abbas and Usama. Okay. So the way that the narration starts, it's a longer one, so I'm just coming to the last

**[24:59]** part of it and it's an authentic narration that they asked Usama if they could enter and sit with the Prophet ﷺ. So I came to the Prophet ﷺ, Usama saying, and I said Ali and al-Abbas want to come in and to enter. And the Prophet ﷺ said, do you know why they've come?

**[25:15]** And I said, I don't know why they've come. So the Prophet ﷺ said, I know why they've come, go ahead and grant them permission. So they entered and they said, Ya Rasulullah, we've come to you for what reason? Does anybody know?

**[25:31]** We've come to you to ask you who you love most from your family. Like we want to know who you love the most. All right. Prophet ﷺ got asked this question in different contexts. Like Ali and Fatima, asking the Prophet ﷺ, who do you love more, me or Fatima, or me

**[25:50]** or Ali? And the Prophet ﷺ says to Ali, Fatima is more beloved to me. And then he says to Fatima and Ali, Ali has more honor to me than you. Like he's balancing out ﷺ.

**[26:06]** So Prophet ﷺ told Usama, I know why they're coming and I know what they're going to ask me. So they came and they said to the Prophet ﷺ that, what is it?

**[26:23]** Who of your family is most beloved to you? Fatima is most beloved to me, my daughter. We're not talking about like your immediate, like your kids.

**[26:39]** We're talking about like your ahl, your broader family in that sense. So he says,

**[26:54]** So if that's what you're asking, then the one who's most beloved to me, not from my immediate family, is the one who Allah has favored and the one who I favored. And he pointed to Usama ibn Zayd. Now you can imagine Usama like let Ali and al-Abbas in. Technically, he's not blood to the Prophet ﷺ, but he's treated that way.

**[27:13]** So if you're asking this, that's Usama. He's more beloved to me. And then they said, all right, then who? So then the Prophet ﷺ said, Then it's Ali. So then al-Abbas said,

**[27:28]** Oh, Messenger of Allah, you made the uncle the last of them? And the Prophet ﷺ said, He said, because Ali preceded you in hijrah. May Allah ﷻ be pleased with them all. Allahumma ameen. So this is the Prophet ﷺ balancing out these family discussions as well.

**[27:46]** And it just shows you Usama radiAllahu anhu's place. I mean, to be told that in this particular setting is beautiful. And there's a truth to it because the Prophet ﷺ does not lie. But there are different dimensions of love. There are different layers of love. There are different manifestations of love.

**[28:03]** And truly, like Usama radiAllahu ta'ala anhu, when he entered, the Prophet ﷺ saw him as just the immediate object of his attention ﷺ. And there are so many narrations about that. Another narration where Ali radiAllahu anhu asked the Prophet ﷺ,

**[28:21]** it could be the same one or a different incident. Who is most beloved to you from your family? He said, Fatima قَالَ إِنَّمَا أَسْأَلُكَ عَنِ الرِّجَالِ. I'm asking you about the men. And he said, مَنْ أَنْعَمَ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَأَنْعَمْتُ عَلَيْهِ. The one who Allah chose and who I chose, Usama.

**[28:39]** And then I said, ثُمَّ مَنْ؟ He said, ثُمَّ أَنْتَ. Then who? I said, then you.

No one should have anything towards Usama after I heard the Prophet ﷺ say, whoever loves Allah and the Messenger, let them love Usama. Do you all love Usama ibn Zayd?

**[29:11]** Alright, alhamdulillah. So this is your ibadah. This is your act of worship for the night as you love the family of the Prophet ﷺ as well. Notice, by the way, in other contexts, remember it was Amr ibn al-Aas who asked the Prophet ﷺ, Who's the most beloved of people to you?

**[29:27]** He said, Aisha. And then he said, then who? قَالَ أَبُوهَا, her father. Then who? Then Umar, right? So the Prophet ﷺ is showing us different layers of love and different dimensions. But that is the status of Usama amongst the family.

**[29:45]** Now, subhanAllah, there is a slander that happens towards Usama because realize that Quraysh wanted to hurt the Prophet ﷺ and the hypocrites in Medina wanted to follow by gossiping and by busying him with all sorts of these types of rumors so that it could hinder the mission.

**[30:05]** You know, I was thinking about this the other day, like some of you might have been at Frisco and I spoke at Frisco a few nights ago and I was just talking about like how Quraysh kind of got stumped because it was hard for them to find something to slander the Prophet ﷺ with. We can't call him a liar, everyone knows he's not a liar. It's so self-evident he's

**[30:24]** not a liar, right? You can't call him a crook, you can't call him a cheat. Like his actual practical dealings are so impeccable that we've got nothing to say about him. His character is spotless so we've got to make up something like in the realm of crazy, majnoon, sahir, right? Sorcerer, magician,

**[30:42]** like there's something there that character is impeccable but he's just, he's loose, right? They've got to make up something along those lines. But they knew how much the Prophet ﷺ loved his family and so the hurt, if you look at there's a common theme, subhanAllah, in Mecca Abu Lahab wanted

**[30:59]** to hurt the Prophet ﷺ by degrading his daughters. In Medina the hypocrites wanted to hurt the Prophet ﷺ and they embroiled Medina in fitna, right? By slandering Aisha ﷺ. Like you go to the household of the Prophet ﷺ, you slander those in his home and that hurts.

**[31:19]** So what was the slander that Quraysh had? The slander that Quraysh had, and the pretext to this is the Prophet ﷺ said, whoever wants to marry a woman of Jannah, let them marry Umm Ayman. Zayd said,

**[31:34]** I've got it. He didn't think she's 20 something years older than me, he just said, woman of Jannah, I'm in. And Allah blessed him with a child, Usama. Zayd was described as being brown, right? But he was a lighter brown. So he was black technically. Ibn al-Jawzi goes through this

**[31:51]** whole thing in Tanwir al-Ghabash, he was black technically. But Umm Ayman was shadid al-sawad, she was very black. Usama was born resembling his mother. So Usama was born extremely black, right? So what do you think some of Quraysh started to whisper? They would say, you know he's not

**[32:12]** really their son, right? And especially the implication was amongst the slave class, like things get mixed up in maternity and paternity all the time. So you know he's not really their son, right? And that hurt Usama, and it hurt the Prophet ﷺ. Prophet ﷺ didn't pay attention to

**[32:32]** it in the sense like it's not addressed in a public setting because it's such a lowly rumor, such a low thing to say, truly like shameless, that some claims are not even worth dignifying. Like whatever, lowly, right? And this is in a chapter, if you look in the books of Hadith,

**[32:52]** sometimes you'll see Baab al-Qafah. Some of the Sunan have it, like Sunan al-Nasa'i and others have Baab al-Qafah. Baab al-Qafah or al-Qiyafah is basically how they would paternity test at the time. How do you paternity test at the time? You look at facial complexion features, you look at

**[33:13]** bone density, like you have specialists, just like you have a qadi, you have a qa'if. A qadi is a judge, a qa'if is a paternity assessor, right? Like you are the father, you are not the father, that kind of stuff. Like imagine back then, no DNA test, nothing like that.

**[33:31]** And especially in Jahiliyyah, where, I mean, they really didn't have many rules governing zina and things of that sort. You all get the point, like marriage was crazy back then, zina was crazy back then, so this was like a very in-demand job, right? Or like a very notable

**[33:48]** position and it's needed and necessary for society, who's the father, who is not the father. So you have a qadi and then you have a qa'if. So al-qa'if or al-qiyafah or al-qafah,

**[34:04]** looking out at the external signs to determine whether a person is actually the son of a person or not, or the child of a person or not. So Urwah narrates from Aisha, may Allah be pleased with them. I'm saying Urwah and Aisha so you can kind of solidify who Urwah is as well. May Allah be

**[34:20]** pleased with them. That the Prophet ﷺ once entered into the house so happy and he said, He said,

**[34:49]** Aisha, let me tell you something that happened. A man by the name of al-Mujazzaz, al-Mujazzaz was a qa'if, he was someone that used to do this type of detection. He entered upon me and he saw Usama ibn Zayd and Zayd and they were sitting together

**[35:12]** and they were sharing a blanket. Okay? And their heads were covered but their feet were exposed. So the implication is that they, like Mujazzaz entered the house to see the Prophet ﷺ for something, Zayd and Usama were sleeping, the house of the Prophet ﷺ is not very big,

**[35:28]** you got a living room that's also a bedroom, that's also a meeting room, right? So Usama ibn Zayd and Zayd are sleeping and they're sharing a blanket and they're covering their heads but their feet are showing. Right? So unprovoked, al-Mujazzaz looks at them and he says,

**[35:49]** These feet are clearly from the same root. Like without being asked, oh these are the feet of a father and a son. It's not like the Prophet ﷺ needed an affirmation or validation of that but

**[36:08]** the Prophet ﷺ was so happy because it was like he didn't even ask and it was so clear and like it was a way of shaming anyone that was making a suggestion otherwise that because the skin color of Usama was darker than his father that there was some sort of rumor that could be spread.

**[36:26]** So, that these two feet or sets of feet belong to one another. So that's one thing, the slander that he had to get over with that. And this is something that obviously hurts a person to hear those types of claims. Like you already know that someone's looking at you different. Like, oh is that really

**[36:46]** the grandson of the Prophet ﷺ? He doesn't have the features, he doesn't look like the Prophet ﷺ but the Prophet ﷺ is calling him my grandson. You already have to deal with that hurt and that pain and now you have people that are making it nasty. Aisha also says that when she was slandered,

**[37:04]** when she was slandered, she said that the Prophet ﷺ called Ali ibn Abi Talib and Usama ibn Zayd to him to seek their advice about what to do. So, it shows you how the Prophet ﷺ brought Usama close

**[37:21]** to him. The same way that Ali was raised in his house, may Allah be pleased with them both, and he asked them what they should do and he said, Usama or she says,

**[37:38]** that Usama was the one who said that we only know of her good things and pointed to the innocence and the purity of Aisha, so that also shows, you know, again a maturity, a closeness of Usama to the Prophet ﷺ, to Aisha and to the family of the Prophet ﷺ as a whole.

**[38:00]** There's going to be something separate, I'm just going to leave this for later on, which is the marriage, who he married, but I'll just mention it here because it's important for the story as well, that the Prophet ﷺ married Usama ibn Zayd then to a woman by the name of Fatima bint Qays.

**[38:16]** Fatima bint Qays radiAllahu ta'ala anha and she was from Banu Fihr, she was a Qurashi woman from the elite class, wealthy, noble, and this was also one of the ways that the Prophet ﷺ was breaking barriers in society. So, the Prophet ﷺ married Usama radiAllahu ta'ala anhu to Fatima bint Qays

**[38:35]** and Allah ﷻ gave them several children. So, what did it look like or what are some of the other narrations that we take about Usama with the Prophet ﷺ? For one, there are the random riding moments that Usama was frequent on the camel or the donkey of the Prophet ﷺ with him.

**[38:53]** There is Baab al-Ridfi al-Himar, so you'll see in the books of hadith the chapter of two men sitting together on a donkey and the narration is from Urwah about Usama that the Prophet ﷺ rode on a donkey and Usama would ride behind him ﷺ on the donkey and the hadith is in Al-Bukhari.

**[39:11]** Usama ibn Zayd also, you'll find in Baab al-Taslim ala majlis fihi al-Muslim wal-Mushrik, the chapter of saying salam to a gathering that has a Muslim and a non-Muslim. Usama says that, I remember when I was riding behind the Prophet ﷺ and he was on his way in Medina to visit Sa'd

**[39:28]** ibn Ubadah radiAllahu ta'ala anhu and he passed by a meeting which involved Abdullah ibn Ubayy ibn Salul before the enemy of Allah pretended to become Muslim or before he embraced Islam in the public sense. So this is early on in Medina and the gathering was Muslims, non-Muslims, Jews,

**[39:45]** idolaters, it had everyone in it and the Prophet ﷺ he gave salam to the gathering. So the chapter of giving salam to a mixed gathering, so someone asked me for example like when I stand up at a protest or if I stand somewhere where there's Muslims and non-Muslims

**[40:01]** I say assalamu alaikum. This is taken from from a fiqh perspective from this hadith of Usama radiAllahu ta'ala anhu as well as other narrations. Abdullah ibn Abbas radiAllahu ta'ala anhuma also has a narration where there was a man that came to him and he says what is it about the people of

**[40:22]** this house, talking about the house of ibn Abbas. They supply nabidh which is a particular type of drink to the public while their cousins provide milk and honey and sawiq like much more luxurious forms of drink. Is this a stinginess of the family of ibn Abbas or something else?

**[40:41]** And he says this is not stinginess or out of need. He said but one time the Prophet ﷺ came to us and he had Usama on him and the Prophet ﷺ called for a drink and we brought him nabidh, this particular drink and he drank from it and Usama drank from the leftover of it and the

**[40:58]** Prophet ﷺ he said, أَحْسَنْتُمْ وَأَجْمَلْتُمْ كَذَلِكَ فَافْعَلُوا that you know you've shown excellence and goodness to your guests so continue to do in a similar way. So he says we didn't want to change what the Prophet ﷺ praised, like this was a particular way that the Prophet ﷺ liked to

**[41:16]** be served when him and Usama came to visit and we didn't want to change it in any way. He also has, I'll just on the riding part finish this set of narrations, he has one of the most prestigious rides in the history of Islam. He was the companion of the Prophet ﷺ from Arafah to Muzdalifah.

**[41:36]** Now you all are probably like all right who rode where? Abdullah ibn Abbas rode some of it, al-Fadl ibn Abbas rode some of it, Usama ibn Zayd rode some of it. The Prophet ﷺ alternated between the young ones of his family and took them on particular routes of the hajj.

**[41:52]** So Usama was the chosen companion of the Prophet ﷺ from Arafah to Muzdalifah. How amazing would it have been to be with the Prophet ﷺ in Arafah. So he narrates that he was with the Prophet ﷺ watching him until he finished his du'a at Arafah and then he fetched the camel of the Prophet ﷺ

**[42:12]** for him and he brought the camel to the Prophet ﷺ. He said that before the Prophet ﷺ left Arafah he went to relieve himself ﷺ. So I was with the camel of the Prophet ﷺ. He came back and he said that I performed wudu for the Prophet ﷺ and then I said to the Prophet ﷺ are you going to pray

**[42:33]** here? And the Prophet ﷺ said, al-musalla amamak, that the place of prayer is still ahead which is that I'm going to delay Maghrib and Isha until I get to Muzdalifah. So he narrated that part of the hajj and he rode behind the Prophet ﷺ from Arafah to Muzdalifah and some of the people

**[42:54]** they blamed Usama for delaying the Prophet ﷺ from Arafah and they mocked that delay. Like Usama held the Prophet ﷺ back and the Prophet ﷺ he admonished those that made that comment or made that mockery that it's like Usama is the one that's holding you back in Arafah. He says

**[43:12]** that I was with the Prophet ﷺ from Arafah to Muzdalifah. The people, subhanAllah it's like you go to hajj and you can see this all playing out. What do you think the people are doing? You got 144,000 people doing it for the first time and they're all trying to squeeze and rush and the Prophet ﷺ said, O people be easy, be dignified. Right?

He said that piety is not in rushing your camels. Calm down, settle down, don't rush. Imagine the Prophet ﷺ with us doing hajj today like people rushing at every single thing, right? Like every single part of hajj is just rush, rush, rush, rush, rush.

**[43:53]** And the Prophet ﷺ is saying calm down, slow down. So he said that I was with the Prophet ﷺ and he said that he would go slow when he was in a crowd and when the Prophet ﷺ saw an open area then he put his head down and he rode his camel fast ﷺ and I narrated every part of that.

**[44:10]** So Usama was the blessed young boy that got to hold on to the Prophet ﷺ from Arafah all the way to Muzdalifah. Then he has another honor and this honor, subhanAllah again context,

**[44:25]** Fath Makkah, the conquest of Mecca. Usama is a Meccan child. He was born in Mecca. Hassan wa Husayn are Madani. May Allah be pleased with them all. They were born in Medina. So he was born in Mecca and he had some memories as a child of Mecca even though he was driven out at a young age

**[44:47]** from Mecca. So Usama was riding with the Prophet ﷺ in Fath Makkah and he said to the Prophet ﷺ Ya Rasulullah a tanzi Are you going to go to your old house in Mecca?

**[45:05]** And the Prophet ﷺ responded Did Aqeel leave us any homes left for us to take back? Basically when the Prophet ﷺ was run out, they took his house. And the Prophet ﷺ does not want to set a tone of like now I'm back and by the way while I'm back in Mecca and Islam is dominant, get out of my house.

**[45:27]** Going back to his house and taking the house. There's also the whole idea of inheritance and things get messy in that regard. So the Prophet ﷺ pitched a tent even though Mecca is his home. This is one of the overlooked elements of humility of how the Prophet ﷺ entered Mecca again.

**[45:43]** Like he was driven out of his home ﷺ and he chose to pitch a tent in Hujun near the grave of Khadija ﷺ in Mualla. But he didn't go take his house back and come in like that dominant conqueror or warrior.

**[45:58]** All of it is humility with him ﷺ. But then you go a step further. Abdullah ibn Umar says that when the Prophet ﷺ got to the Ka'bah, that Uthman ibn Talha was the one with the keys of the Ka'bah.

**[46:16]** And of course till today the inheritors of Uthman ibn Talha hold the keys to the Ka'bah and the Prophet ﷺ maintained that the keys of the Ka'bah remain with the family of Uthman ibn Talha. But he said then it was opened and the Prophet ﷺ entered the Ka'bah with who?

**[46:35]** He only entered the Ka'bah with two people. Who are those two people? Bilal and Usama. That's it. Like you talk about setting a new tone in Mecca.

**[46:50]** Right? Both, one of them is the freed slave of the Prophet ﷺ. The other one is born to the freed slaves of the Prophet ﷺ and treated like his grandson. And those are the only two people he brings with him inside the Ka'bah ﷺ.

**[47:07]** So he says that the Prophet ﷺ entered with Bilal and Usama and then they shut the door behind them. Who's narrating this? Abdullah ibn Umar. Abdullah ibn Umar (رضي الله عنه) said, so I watched attentively to see if I could catch anything that was happening.

**[47:23]** You know, subhanAllah, the scene that I think of is like when people pass by the grave of the Prophet ﷺ and they're trying to look in and see something. So Abdullah ibn Umar is eager to follow the Sunnah. So he said, I tried to see if I could see something that was going on in there. But the Prophet ﷺ took Bilal and Usama and he shut the doors in the Ka'bah and he said, and he stayed in there for a long time.

**[47:41]** It wasn't a short time. It wasn't like they went in for a ceremonial touch and came out. So he said, and then they came out. So this shows you character. He says, so I went to Usama and I said,

**[48:00]** What exact place did the Prophet ﷺ pray in? See, Abdullah ibn Umar wants to follow the Sunnah. He's like, I don't care about the honorifics of this or getting the position or being seen. I want to know where the Prophet ﷺ prayed. It's so on character for him. So Usama went and showed him exactly the two pillars.

**[48:18]** Said, بَيْنَ الْعَمُودَيْنِ الْمُقَدَّمَيْنِ, that these two pillars, the old pillars, this is where the Prophet ﷺ prayed when he came in. And later on when Ibn Umar would narrate this hadith, he would say,

**[48:33]** He said, and I forgot to ask him how many rak'ahs the Prophet ﷺ prayed. I just assumed that he prayed two rak'ahs, but I don't know. Maybe the Prophet ﷺ prayed more than two rak'ahs. But I forgot to ask Usama, how many rak'ahs did the Prophet ﷺ pray? So he was brought close.

**[48:48]** And yes, there is a scene in Mecca of breaking the tribalism, breaking the classism, breaking the racism, showing who the Prophet ﷺ is going to privilege and prioritize now based on taqwa. Only Usama and Bilal entered with him. Only Bilal climbed on top of the Ka'bah to give the adhan.

**[49:05]** And that's it. So in a society like that, this is changed by practice and it shows you many things. Alright, now something happens. And this is probably one of the two most frequently narrated incidents about Usama ibn Zayd.

**[49:23]** There was a woman from Banu Makhzum. Banu Makhzum is the tribe of Abu Jahl. And the Prophet ﷺ wants to solidify relationships. He's trying to bring hearts together.

**[49:38]** Right? So he's not trying to rock the boat ﷺ with other tribes or put people down or make them feel bad. He's trying to keep people together. But the famous hadith of al-Makhzumiyya, if you hear the hadith of al-Makhzumiyya,

**[49:54]** is about a woman who was stealing from Banu Makhzum. So you got the old rivalry of Banu Hashim and Banu Makhzum. And the Prophet ﷺ has to make a decision. Right?

**[50:09]** Like does he uphold the hudud of Allah ﷻ? Does he uphold the hadd? Does he uphold the penalty? Or does he overlook it ﷺ because it's still new and I'm trying to win these people back and I don't want to carry out the punishment on a woman from that tribe.

**[50:27]** Right? So Aisha says that this actually happened after the fath. After Fath al-Makkah. Gives you some more context. Right? That this woman would steal things from people. And it's clear from the language that she uses in the hadith that it's not like one time.

**[50:45]** Like she was actually like a thief. That she was stealing from people. And she says that of the things that she used to do, she used to borrow things from people and then when people would tell her to give it back, she'd say, I don't know what you're talking about. So it's almost like an arrogance and an elitism with that. Right?

**[51:00]** Like, but wait a minute. I just gave you... What are you talking about? What are you going to do? There's a challenge to this. Like go call somebody. Right? And Aisha says that this is sort of the makings of hilf al-fudul. Right? Like the early pact before Islam that you belong to a powerful tribe.

**[51:15]** What? I stole some money from you or you claim that I took something from you. Go find someone and take it from me. I dare you. She's makhzumiyah. She's from Banu Makhzum. So she was stealing and the Prophet ﷺ, he decided that he's going to carry the hadd on her.

**[51:32]** The penalty will be carried on her. But in Islam, there's an enforcement of justice that can't have privilege in it either. Right? This is the same spirit of Umar not allowing the lashing of the Christian slave of Egypt.

**[51:48]** Right? No, no, no. Come back. And in the name of Umar, absolutely not. Right? Same spirit of that. So Aisha says, so the people got together and they thought to themselves,

Who would dare to talk to the Prophet ﷺ on our behalf? They said, who would have the nerve or who would be in a position to go talk to the Prophet ﷺ about this except for Usama ibn Zayd?

**[52:23]** Like point has been made, Usama is his love. Usama is close to him. Right? So it shows you the status of Usama that SubhanAllah, look how the tables have turned. Banu Makhzum is asking the child of slaves who they would mock for his skin color and flat nose and all this stuff.

**[52:41]** They're asking him to go talk to the Prophet ﷺ and say, can you let it go this time? So they went to Usama and Usama ibn Zayd, he obliged.

**[52:57]** So he came to the Prophet ﷺ on behalf of Banu Makhzum and he says, The Prophet ﷺ's face turned red. The Prophet ﷺ was so upset and he said,

Are you interceding against the command of Allah? Like are you interceding so I could do away with the law of Allah ﷻ?

**[53:31]** By the way, the Prophet ﷺ said, Like cast doubt so that you don't have to carry out a punishment on someone. Clearly this is a woman that's way past any of those doubts. So are you asking me to not carry out the command of Allah?

**[53:48]** Usama said, O Messenger of Allah, seek forgiveness for me. I'm so sorry. I didn't mean to. Like this is not like a personal, Grandpa can you do something for me? This involves the book of Allah ﷻ. So he said, يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ اسْتَغْفِرْ لِي.

**[54:06]** Seek forgiveness for me. And the Prophet ﷺ did so. And the Prophet ﷺ he said, he then went up and he gave a khutbah. And the Prophet ﷺ praised Allah ﷻ and glorified him. And the Prophet ﷺ said that this is the dhulm that destroyed the people that came before you.

**[54:26]** This behavior is exactly the oppression that destroyed the people before you. He said that in the people of the past, In the people in the past, the umam of the past,

**[54:41]** when a noble person stole, they overlooked it. They let it go. But if a weak person stole, أَقَامُوا عَلَيْهِ الْحَدَّ, then they enforce the punishment on him in the strictest way. And the Prophet ﷺ, he said, by him in whose hand is my soul.

**[54:58]** And he pointed to Fatima radiAllahu anha. He said, if Fatima was to steal, لَقَطَعْتُ يَدَهَا, I would cut her hands. This is the hadd of Allah. I'm not going to cheat the book of Allah. What an amazing message to send. What an amazing way to establish a community.

**[55:14]** And subhanAllah, you see today like when people talk about criminal law, unenforcing punishment. And this is something that this society here in the United States is riddled with. If you're rich and you can get a better lawyer, and you belong to a certain class in society,

**[55:30]** you can get out of the worst types of white-collar crime, corporate crime. But the small guy who can't afford anything and who belongs to a certain race or belongs to a certain class, they'll make sure that they enforce the heaviest punishment on that person.

**[55:45]** The Prophet ﷺ said, this is what destroyed Bani Israel and the nations that came before you. And he said, I would not even exclude my daughter Fatima. And Fatima is the most beloved person to me. From this, I would carry out the hadd on Fatima radiAllahu anha. This is an important rule in Islam.

**[56:01]** Just because I love my family doesn't mean I'm going to privilege my family over the book of Allah subhanAllah. And Aisha radiAllahu anha says, that subhanAllah, this woman, amazing enough, he says that this woman actually

**[56:18]** that she repented to Allah and she actually became a really good Muslim and she became one of my students. SubhanAllah, like wow, the whole flip of the scenario here. Because even the person who's going through this can appreciate the integrity of the Prophet ﷺ in this regard.

**[56:33]** So that's one incident. The second one happened where Usama radiAllahu ta'ala anhu says that the Prophet ﷺ بَعَثَنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِلَى الْحُرَقَةِ. The Prophet ﷺ sent us to an area called al-Huraqa.

**[56:49]** So there was a battle. This was a hostile tribe to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. And he said that in the battle, أَنَا وَرَجُلٌ مِنَ الْأَنْصَارِ, that I and one of the Ansari men, we basically in the battlefield cornered a man.

**[57:06]** We cornered the opponent. So he says that once we got him that way, as we were about to kill him, the man said,

**[57:21]** Usama says, so the Ansar held his sword, the Ansari man held his sword, but I killed him. Right? Because it was clear to me, like he's in a battlefield, he's just trying to get himself out of the situation. Clearly this was not a sincere repentance to Allah ﷻ.

**[57:36]** Right? Or else you're not going to wait until you're about to die in the battlefield to say So he said, I used my judgment like, you're in the heat of battle, right? Your sword is going right and left. And I didn't hold back my sword. So I killed the man.

**[57:51]** And then we came to the Prophet ﷺ and we told the Prophet ﷺ what happened. And he said that the Prophet ﷺ looked at me.

**[58:07]** Did you really kill him after he said Did you check his heart, O Usama, to see if his لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ was sincere or not? Usama said, يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ, he only said it to save himself. He said, يَا أُسَامَةُ, أَقَتَلْتَهُ, he raised his voice ﷺ.

**[58:24]** He's talking to his grandson, right? The person is like his grandson, but he sent him as an amir and there is a lesson in Islam here as well. Did you really kill a man who said Did you check his heart? Usama radiAllahu anhu said, the Prophet ﷺ kept repeating it

**[58:39]** until I wished he would stop. Like he kept going and going and going and going. And he said that it went to the point that I wished,

**[58:54]** I wished I did not become Muslim until after that incident. Okay, let's unpack this a bit. The first part of this, those of you that say, he's only doing this because of that or she's only doing this because of that

**[59:10]** or he's not sincere and we know how she is. Oh, and now she's doing this. Oh, and now he's doing that. Did you check their heart? Like if the Prophet ﷺ is saying, even this man, like is there anything more obvious

**[59:26]** than a man who's trying to kill you and then once his sword falls, he says, Anything more obvious than that? And even that, the Prophet ﷺ admonishes and chastises the most beloved person to him. And Usama says, I wished I had not become Muslim

**[59:41]** until that day. Now, the sharh of the hadith, it's two things. The first one, what he means by that, some of the scholars say, so he could plead ignorance because he was a new Muslim.

**[59:56]** Like he didn't know any better. People would plead ignorance and say that, I didn't know any better, but I knew better. And the second one, of course, which is the majority of how the scholars talk about this in hadith, that the Prophet ﷺ meant by that, or that Usama ﷺ meant by that,

**[1:00:14]** so that his sins would be wiped out by his saying, Because when you become Muslim, all of your previous sins are wiped out. And from that, there is actually a lesson because this would affect Usama's decision later on when Muslims start to fight each other, Usama said, I'll never fight anyone who says

**[1:00:33]** After that, I'm never fighting anyone who says I don't care what two Muslims fight each other, keep me out of it. So he was extremely cautious when that happened. Now Usama radiAllahu ta'ala anhuma experienced the Prophet ﷺ when loved ones to him died,

**[1:00:50]** and the Prophet ﷺ consoled Usama when loved ones to Usama passed away. Usama was with the Prophet ﷺ when a message came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ from his daughter that her child was passing away.

**[1:01:07]** And the Prophet ﷺ took Usama and Sa'd with him ﷺ to visit his daughter and to hold his dying grandchild for the last time. And he saw the Prophet ﷺ disturbed, he saw the Prophet ﷺ cry until this child breathed its last in his chest ﷺ.

**[1:01:30]** And it was here that Usama is the one narrating that I was there when the Prophet ﷺ was holding his dead grandchild. And Sa'd, when he saw the tears of the Prophet ﷺ, he said, What is this, O Messenger of Allah?

**[1:01:45]** You're crying? What are these tears? And the Prophet ﷺ said, This is mercy that Allah puts in the hearts of whom He wills.

**[1:02:01]** Verily Allah shows mercy to His servants, to those that show mercy. So he was with the Prophet ﷺ when the Prophet's ﷺ granddaughter died. Also, when Usama's father passed away, when Zayd passed away,

**[1:02:18]** when he was martyred in Mu'tah. Remember the Prophet ﷺ sent Zayd, and Aisha says, Zayd is always the commander. He's always the number one when the Prophet ﷺ sends an expedition. So the Prophet ﷺ sent Zayd and Ja'far and Abdullah ibn Rawaha and a group of the companions, Khalid,

**[1:02:35]** who had just become Muslim, he sent them out to the Ghassanids to fight the Romans after the Romans killed an ambassador that was sent to them from the Prophet ﷺ. And حِبُّ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ, the loved one of the Prophet ﷺ being Zayd, was martyred,

**[1:02:54]** was the first one martyred. Jibreel ﷺ gave the Prophet ﷺ that news and this deeply moved the Prophet ﷺ. And that's why when you go to Mu'tah, which is in modern-day Jordan, you can see the graves of Zayd and Ja'far and Abdullah ibn Rawaha

**[1:03:10]** and those that were martyred on that day. So he was the one that had to console Usama after the death of his father. And that's when he started to be حِبُّ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ, the loved one of the Prophet ﷺ. He assumed the title of Zayd.

**[1:03:26]** So he was either called حِبُّ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ or حِبُّ, the love of the Prophet ﷺ, the son of the love of the Prophet ﷺ. That's his title. And this gives you some context to what's going to happen now. After Zayd was killed and after the Prophet ﷺ went and there's Fath Makkah,

**[1:03:46]** the Prophet ﷺ appointed Usama as the leader of the army to now confront the Romans after Hajjatul Wada, after the farewell Hajj. Now Jabalah ﷺ says that

**[1:04:05]** كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِذَا لَمْ يَغْزُو that the Prophet ﷺ if he did not go out and lead an army himself, أَعْطَى سِلَاحَهُ عَلِيًّا أَوْ أُسَامَى He gave his position, leadership, his shield, his weaponry, he gave it to Ali or Usama.

**[1:04:22]** So this is now from the family of the Prophet ﷺ, who's going to lead the expeditions, who's going to lead the armies. So Zayd was the ameer of every army and now Usama is going to be the ameer of the army. Two reasons for this.

**[1:04:40]** Number one, it's just the continuation. Zayd and Usama socially and for all meaningful purposes were still like the son and the grandson of the Prophet ﷺ, he loved them. Right? The second thing is that when the Sahaba said, let's give it to Khalid.

**[1:04:57]** Why? Because Khalid ﷺ again, he experienced some success after Zayd and Ja'far and Abdullah ibn Rawaha were killed. He was able to divert and able to gain a victory and bring the Muslims back relatively unharmed. Right? That was his miraculous first draw in Islam.

**[1:05:13]** So they wanted to give it back to Khalid and the Prophet ﷺ said, Won't you give it to a man whose father was killed? Meaning, these are the people that killed his father. So it's not just that he's the Amir, he's going to continue the legacy of his father, the Amir,

**[1:05:30]** but also that these are the people that killed his father. There's something symbolic to that as well. Now, why didn't the Sahaba feel good about Zayd, I'm sorry, Usama ibn Zayd fighting the Romans? He was 17 years old.

**[1:05:48]** He was 17. He had no experience fighting a large army. He'd been on these small expeditions here or there, but he's 17 years old and he's going to command an army fighting the greatest empire in the world with people that had decades more experience than him.

**[1:06:07]** So some of the Sahaba were like, يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ, come on, like you've got people in their 50s and 60s that have led some of the most momentous battles. We're going against the Romans here. This is a big deal. And one of the last khutbahs the Prophet ﷺ gave,

**[1:06:23]** narrated from Salim, who says that the Prophet ﷺ stood up and he said, If you have problems with his leadership,

**[1:06:39]** Some of you had problems with the leadership of his father before. And I swear by Allah that he's the most competent for it. And he says, وَأَيْمُ اللَّهِ He says, and I swear by Allah,

Zayd was the most beloved people to me. And the Prophet ﷺ swore, and he says, That this young man is also fitting for the position. So Zayd was fitting and Zayd was the most beloved person to me.

**[1:07:11]** And Usama is fitting. And he says, وَأُسَامَةُ And Usama is the most beloved of the people to me. And so the Prophet ﷺ said, So I entrust you with him.

**[1:07:26]** And look at what the Prophet ﷺ says, Usama is one of your Salihin. He's one of your most righteous ones as well. So there is that. This is in Sahih Muslim. When the Prophet ﷺ was then going in and out of consciousness as he was dying,

**[1:07:43]** the Prophet ﷺ would wake up from his unconsciousness. And he would say, Did the army of Usama go out? Did the army of Usama go out? The Prophet ﷺ did not want anything to pause for his death ﷺ.

**[1:07:59]** Keep it going. Keep it moving. We're in battle with the Romans. Did you send out the army of Usama yet? Send out the army of Usama. Dispatch the army of Usama. So Usama ibn Zayd made his way out of Al-Madinah.

**[1:08:17]** And then his wife Fatima bint Qays, she writes him a letter as he's gone away from Madinah but not too far. And she says to Usama, Listen, I don't think your grandfather, I don't think the Prophet ﷺ is going to make it.

**[1:08:33]** Like you better come back and say farewell. So Usama, even though he led the army out, when he heard that the Prophet ﷺ might die, because this was so far out of like possibility, when he might die, Usama rushed back. And subhanAllah, here you have

**[1:08:49]** his last moment, which is very beautiful, powerful. Because you think of like grandfather, grandson, and you think about like that beautiful relationship of parent to child. It's an authentic narration that he says that when I heard the Prophet ﷺ had become gravely ill,

**[1:09:06]** that he was going to die, he said that I rushed from the camp and the people came with me. And he said, I rushed into the room of the Prophet ﷺ and the Prophet ﷺ was so sick that he couldn't speak anymore.

**[1:09:23]** So imagine the Prophet ﷺ looking at his grandson and look at what the Prophet ﷺ does. He said that the Prophet ﷺ pointed his hands to the sky.

And then he pointed towards me. So I knew that the Prophet ﷺ was making du'a for me. How beautiful is that? The dying grandfather ﷺ, the dying beautiful Prophet ﷺ

**[1:09:56]** who his whole, Usama's whole life was on the back of the Prophet ﷺ climbing on him with him ﷺ And the Prophet ﷺ as he's dying, he's comforting Fatima radiAllahu ta'ala anha He's comforting Aisha radiAllahu anha And he's saying to Usama, making du'a for you.

**[1:10:14]** And Usama says that was the last I saw the Prophet ﷺ making du'a for me ﷺ But he wasn't able to speak anymore. And the Prophet ﷺ passed away. Alright, when the Prophet ﷺ passed away, things did freeze for a bit.

**[1:10:31]** So now the question comes back up, alright, we're going to recontinue. Are we going to go fight the Romans again? I mean, are we going to like, things are heating up with the Romans. The Romans are getting aggressive. Things are heating up with them. Are we going to continue this? Or are we going to stop everything?

**[1:10:47]** Abu Bakr radiAllahu ta'ala anhu has to maintain the khilafah. He has to, you know, hold things down. Like things are very volatile. So Abu Bakr radiAllahu ta'ala anhu says, we're going to continue on what the Prophet ﷺ said. So he said Usama's going to go out.

**[1:11:04]** But as the ulema mention, he adjusted the battle to where it would only be fighting the outer layer of the Romans. So basically up until the point where Mu'tah happened, but don't go deep into the Roman empire. But to fulfill the command of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ,

**[1:11:22]** I'm still sending Usama out there. So Umar radiAllahu ta'ala anhu, he says that some of the elder companions, they came to me. They said, can you go talk to Abu Bakr

**[1:11:37]** and ask him to maybe replace Usama with someone who's older than him. 17 year old leading this expedition. Like the Prophet ﷺ is dead. A lot has happened since then transpired. Things are even more fragile than before, more consequential. Can you go talk to Abu Bakr?

**[1:11:54]** So he says that I went to Abu Bakr and I told him and some of the seniors of the Ansar, they were waiting outside the house, said that some of the Ansar are hoping that someone more elderly can be appointed to go against the Romans.

**[1:12:11]** He says Abu Bakr radiAllahu ta'ala anhu كَانَ جَارِسًا, he was sitting down. وَأَخَذَ بِلِحْيَةِ عُمَرَ, he grabbed the beard of Umar radiAllahu ta'ala anhu and he pulled Umar radiAllahu anhu to his face.

**[1:12:26]** And he said, ثَكِلَتْكَ أُمُّكَ يَا عُمَرُ. May your mother lose you, The Prophet صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ appointed him and you're telling me to remove him?

**[1:12:42]** And he says to him that وَاللَّهِ, I will not undo a knot tied by the Prophet صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ even if the birds were to snatch us and beasts surrounded us in Medina and the dogs dragged the mothers of the believers by their feet.

**[1:12:58]** I'm not gonna disobey one order of the Prophet This is the order of the Messenger of Allah So Umar radiAllahu ta'ala anhu, he's like, man. So Abu Bakr grabbed him, he yelled at him and this is not Abu Bakr's character, right? Abu Bakr usually is the soft-spoken, calm kind

**[1:13:15]** when Umar is usually the one that's like hot-blooded and let's go. Umar radiAllahu anhu comes out. So the sahabah are like, what happened? And he said, may all of your mothers lose you. He said, you made me make Abu Bakr mad. I hate making Abu Bakr mad.

**[1:13:32]** So I got no good out of you people, right? So he dispatched the army of Usama and the army of Usama was successful and subhanAllah, Heraclius of Rome, the messenger came to him with the news of two things

**[1:13:49]** on the same day. That the Prophet صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ died and by the way, the Muslims still dispatched their army. He said, what? He said, So what is it with these people? Their main guy died, their prophet died and they're still fighting us?

**[1:14:06]** Like they didn't pause? They kept going? What a lesson for us, subhanAllah. What were the shuhada of Uhud gonna say? Keep going. That's what they wanted to come back and tell the Muslims that were feeling so beat down. I mean, the greatest tragedy just struck the ummah, the death of the Prophet

**[1:14:24]** Continue, keep going. And Heraclius, you know, you think of Kisra in Persia, Heraclius in Rome, they were looked at like central figures. No one loved them the way that the Muslims love the Prophet صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ, but our love of the Prophet صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ

**[1:14:40]** is a love of ta'a. It's a love of following him And so they obeyed the command and that was something that once again reached the Romans in that way. I'll finish off with a few things here inshallah ta'ala. Umar ibn al-Khattab radiAllahu ta'ala,

**[1:14:56]** who used to approach Usama and he would greet him, he would say,

**[1:15:14]** The Prophet ﷺ died and you were my Amir. Everyone called Umar radiAllahu anhu Amir al-mu'minin. Umar radiAllahu ta'ala anhu said, You O Usama, you're my Amir. Because the Prophet ﷺ appointed you as my Amir. In Zayd ibn Aslam, he says that when Umar radiAllahu ta'ala anhu distributed the shares

**[1:15:31]** from Baytul Mal, he had tiers. The highest tier was the tier of the Badriyun, the sahaba who fought in Badr. Like your stripes in Islam or what stipend and benefits you received had to do with how early you came into Islam and what you put forth.

**[1:15:47]** And he put Usama radiAllahu ta'ala anhu in the highest tier of the Badriyun, even though Usama did not fight in Badr, he didn't fight in Uhud, right, he was too young for these different types of things. So someone came to Abdullah ibn Umar and he said to Abdullah ibn Umar radiAllahu anhuma,

**[1:16:04]** he said, you know, can't you see that like Umar prefers him to you? Like Umar treats him in a way that he doesn't even treat his own son. He gives him a higher stipend, he takes care of him this way. So Abdullah ibn Umar, you know, he just wanted to ask.

**[1:16:22]** He said to Umar radiAllahu ta'ala anhu, like, is that true? Like you prefer Usama to me? And Umar radiAllahu ta'ala anhu says,

He said that Zayd was more beloved to the Prophet ﷺ than I was and Usama was more beloved to the Prophet ﷺ than you were. So I chose the love of the Prophet ﷺ over my love.

**[1:16:57]** What a beautiful way that the Sahaba would honor this man radiAllahu ta'ala anhu. At the end of his life, Usama radiAllahu ta'ala anhu, he avoided the plague of Amwas, he avoided the plague as the Prophet ﷺ, he is the one who narrates the hadith that if a plague strikes in a land,

**[1:17:15]** then if you're in the land that the plague strikes, then stay in it, do not leave and if it occurs and you're not there, then don't enter it. So he was one of those that even though he was in the area of Ash-Sham at the time, he avoided the plague, he didn't go into the plague. But then he's also someone who avoided the fitna when Sahaba,

**[1:17:32]** when fitna started to strike amongst the companions themselves. And there's a very touching narration that Ali radiAllahu ta'ala anhu, he sent a message to or he reached out to Usama ibn Zayd when fitna started happening and he said to Usama,

**[1:17:51]** مَا كُنَّا نَعُدُّكَ إِلَّا مِنْ أَنْفُسِنَا يَا أُسَامَةُ, we used to count you like one of us, oh Usama. So why don't you fight amongst us, like you were the family of the Prophet ﷺ, you are Ahlul Bayt, you're one of us. And he said that Usama responded and he said,

**[1:18:09]** يَا أَبَا الْحَسَنِ إِنَّكَ وَاللَّهِ, he said, oh Abu Hassan, I swear by Allah, لَوْ أَخَذَ بِمِشْفَرِ الْأَسَدِ, if you were to be taken by the mouth of a lion, then I would go into that mouth of the lion with you.

**[1:18:27]** حَتَّى نَهْلِكَ جَمِيعًا, so we both die together. Like this is not out of a lack of love for you. If a lion were to try to eat you, I would jump into the mouth of the lion and fight with you. He said, فَأَمَّا هَذَا الْأَمْرُ الَّذِي أَنْتَ فِيهِ, but this thing that you're in right now, where people are fighting each other,

**[1:18:43]** فَوَاللَّهِ لَا أَدْخُلُ فِيهِ أَبَدًا, he said, I'll never get involved in it. He remembered when the Prophet ﷺ said, أَشَقَقْتَ عَنْ قَلْبِهِ, like how dare you kill a man who said لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ, he said, I'm not getting involved with any type of fitna. And so he avoided any type of fitna,

**[1:18:58]** and he kind of avoided when community started to break apart. He did defend the honor, and there are narrations of him kind of in Medina and around Medina, one time Marwan ibn Hakam saw him,

**[1:19:14]** and Usama would be seen sleeping near the house of Aisha radiAllahu ta'ala anha, and he would be humming something, and then he would pray near the grave of the Prophet ﷺ, not to the grave of the Prophet ﷺ. And then one time Marwan rebuked him,

**[1:19:30]** and he said to him, أَتُصَلِّي عِنْدَ قَبْرٍ, are you praying next to a grave? And he said it to him, قَوْلًا قَبِيحًا, he said to him a very nasty word as well.

He said, Marwan, you're a foul mouthed person, and I heard the Prophet ﷺ say that Allah hates the person who is foul. So back off. Another time, Muawiyah was with Usama,

Muawiyah treated him well radiAllahu ta'ala anhu, فَمَدَّ رِجْلَهُ, and Usama extended his leg. And Muawiyah said, يَرْحَمُ اللَّهُ أُمَّ أَيْمَنَ, may Allah have mercy on Umm Ayman. It's as if I'm looking at her leg, and it was like an ostrich.

**[1:20:20]** Umm Ayman radiAllahu ta'ala anha had a very skinny leg. And Usama got extremely upset with that. And he said, فَعَلَ اللَّهُ بِكَ يَا مُعَاوِيَةُ, may Allah do with you, oh Muawiyah, what you deserve. هِيَ وَاللَّهِ خَيْرٌ مِنْكَ, she's better than you. And he said, أَسْتَغْفِرُ اللَّهَ اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِي.

**[1:20:36]** I seek forgiveness from Allah, oh Allah, forgive me. So he's someone that stayed away from the fitna, but he maintained his position in the sight of the people. The only thing that we have about his virtue or his practice is that he used to keep the fasting of Monday and Thursday, even in his very, very, very old age.

**[1:20:52]** He always fasted Monday and Thursday, and he was asked why he didn't leave it even in his very old age. And he said, because I heard the Prophet صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ say, إِنَّ أَعْمَالَ الْعِبَادِ تُعْرَضُ يَوْمَ الْإِثْنَيْنِ وَيَوْمَ الْخَمِيسِ, that the actions of the ibad are presented to Allah on the day of Monday and on the day of Thursday.

**[1:21:09]** He died, radiAllahu ta'ala anhu, in an area of al-Jurf, which was on the outskirts of Medina. And they carried his body to al-Medina to be prayed upon. حِبُّ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ, the loved one of the Prophet صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ. And Abdullah ibn Umar radiAllahu ta'ala anhuma

**[1:21:25]** was the one who oversaw his janazah. And he said, أَعْجِلُوا بِحِبِّ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ Hurry up and hasten with the beloved one of the Prophet صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ before the sun sets. Let's honor him. If someone's saying, you know, hurry up and take me to my grave,
