# Safwan ibn al-Mu’attal (ra): Slandered for Helping A Woman | The Firsts

**[0:00]** As-salamu alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh, everyone. Welcome back to the first. Bismillah walhamdulillah wa salatu wassalamu ala rasulillah wa ala alihi wa sahbihi wa man wala.

**[0:16]** I want to, inshallah ta'ala, transition to someone that also fits within hadith al-ifk, but not amongst those who was redeemed for something bad that he did, right? Or through something negative that he did.

**[0:31]** But I actually wanted one day to give a khutbah. I actually have it in my khutbah notepad. So I've got this long document where I have khutbahs that one day I'm going to give. Sometimes when I can't think of an idea on a Friday, I pull one of those khutbahs out and I sort of work with it. What about Safwan? What about Safwan? And what do I mean by that?

**[0:48]** That when A'ishah radiallahu ta'ala anha was slandered, it wasn't just her that was slandered, it was also the man that was slandered too, Safwan radiallahu ta'ala anhu. Because the accusation of zina ultimately is an accusation of two people, right? But obviously because of who A'ishah radiallahu ta'ala anha is,

**[1:06]** and the gravity of the slander as it affected her and affected the household of the Prophet ﷺ, we often forget about the other person that was accused, which is Safwan ibn al-Mu'attal radiallahu ta'ala anhu, who is also a noble companion of the Prophet ﷺ.

**[1:24]** So I wanted to introduce this man radiallahu ta'ala anhu, but he does give another dynamic to the slander of A'ishah radiallahu ta'ala anha that I think is very important to us to study as we're talking about stories of redemption and hurt feelings and the complexities of people as we all make our way towards Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala as a community bi-idhnillahi ta'ala.

**[1:44]** Safwan radiallahu ta'ala anhu is described by Ibn Abdul-Barr as faadilan shuja'an batal. He's someone who was a man of great virtue, a man of great courage, a man who was very brave.

**[1:59]** So the categorization of him fits a noble companion of the highest rank, and the Prophet ﷺ will praise his character as we will see. But he also comes from a very unique background.

**[2:14]** He was radiallahu ta'ala anhu, Sulami thumma Dhakwani radiallahu ta'ala anhu, Safwan ibn al-Mu'attal al-Sulami from the tribe of Banu Sulaym and from the sub-tribe of Dhakwan. And this is a very famous tribe when you look at the history of the Arabs, and that's why it's important.

**[2:34]** A'ishah radiallahu anha mentions this as she's describing who he is in the context of hadith al-ifk. Banu Sulaym are one of the tribes of Mudar. They're not necessarily from Mecca or Medina, but they're somewhere in between. And they were known to not just be a great tribe in terms of their numbers and their strength,

**[2:54]** but particularly a significant tribe as it relates to battle. So this is a military tribe, a Bedouin tribe that understands all the arts of war, that were often called into the conflicts of some of the major city centers, if you will.

**[3:11]** And when they took a side, it was significant. And that's why when you look at Fath Mecca, Banu Sulaym were amongst those that sent a thousand horsemen, right, to be part of the army of the Prophet ﷺ in the conquest of Mecca.

**[3:26]** So this is a large tribe, Banu Sulaym, that Safwan belongs to, known for their ethics, known for their courage, known for their principles of the desert, if you will. They have the Bedouin principles, which means they can be very rough, but at the same time,

**[3:42]** they have these noble traits of hospitality. They have these noble traits of staying true to their word and other things that they would be praised for. And that's why, by the way, when you look at Dhakwan, which is the sub-tribe that Safwan is from,

**[3:58]** one of the ways that they show up in the Seerah is the Prophet ﷺ making du'a against them, because they were one of the tribes that actually did betray the Prophet ﷺ in the killing of the 70 companions who were Qur'an reciters at Bi'r Ma'una.

**[4:16]** If you go back to that tragedy when we talked about Bi'r Ma'una and Hadith al-Rajir after Uhud. So they were betraying their own principle, if you will. Now, there's no indication whatsoever that Safwan had anything to do with that, but these tribes were noted as tribes that would be people who were supposed to be trustworthy.

**[4:36]** And so when they were treacherous, the Prophet ﷺ prayed against them. With Safwan, we don't know at what point he embraced Islam. We don't know at what point he actually came to Medina and joined the community of the Prophet ﷺ. But what we do know is that he was playing a very specific role in al-Muraysi' in this expedition

**[4:57]** where A'ishah was going to be slandered. And that was the role of being at the saqa, being behind the army. And so the saqa is the rear guard and they don't just protect the army from behind.

**[5:14]** They also ensure that things are not left behind, that people are not left behind. So it's a noble position because you have to think about the type of person that is willing to put themselves at risk by being at the back here. Because ultimately, let's say that another opposing army catches up with you, you're all alone.

**[5:33]** So it does take a particular type of strategy, a particular type of skill, a particular type of character. Now, this is an important part of the life of Safwan ﷺ because he's not going to find A'ishah in some suspicious way.

**[5:48]** He is exactly where the Prophet ﷺ tells him to be. We talk about the archers of Uhud. The Prophet ﷺ told them to be at a certain place. And subhanallah, the same duty that made him virtuous made him vulnerable.

**[6:04]** Because the Prophet ﷺ commanded him to be there. And in the process, he's going to do something virtuous while being in a virtuous place. I mean, what more virtuous than finding that the wife of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was accidentally left behind. And then protecting her, right, by bringing her to Medina safely.

**[6:23]** And this is the worst way to be slandered. When you get slandered doing something good. When I say the worst way, it's the best way in the sight of Allah ﷻ because the Prophets were slandered in their noble capacity. But it hurts when you're doing something good and you get slandered for doing something good.

**[6:39]** Safwan stayed behind. And A'ishah, the assumption was that she was in the caravan of the Muslims. That she was in her tent and she was being carried. And they didn't realize that she wasn't in there.

**[6:56]** A'ishah had been left behind. She fell asleep. Safwan, he saw her. He saw her. He said, subhanallah. Subhanallah.

**[7:11]** By Him in Whose hand is my soul. I have never uncovered the awrah of any woman. So he's dignified. And he sees A'ishah who lost her necklace and who stayed behind. Got left behind by the army by accident. Fell asleep.

**[7:27]** And Safwan sees her in the morning. Recognizes her. Her face is uncovered. And the only thing that he says is, Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'oon. Subhanallah.

**[7:42]** In a story where people's tongues became too loose. Safwan shows the dignity of silence and restraint. He doesn't say to A'ishah, what are you doing here? What happened? I hope all is well. Can I get you some food? Can I get you some drink?

**[7:57]** Like he is a very particular prototype amongst the companions of the Prophet ﷺ. You can imagine the fear of A'ishah. The embarrassment. The fear of Safwan. He just says, Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'oon.

**[8:13]** A'ishah, she says, Fastayqathtu bistrijaahu heena arafani. I woke up from his Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'oon. When he recognized me. A'ishah covers her face. He kneels the camel.

**[8:29]** Looks away from her. And then she gets on the camel. He leads the camel back to Medina. SubhanAllah. Listen to what Aisha says. Wallahi ma takallamna bikalima. Wala sama'tu minhu kalima ghayra istirja'ihi. By Allah, we didn't say a single word to each other.

**[8:46]** Nor did I hear from him any word except for when he said, Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'oon. Looks away from her. And then she gets on the camel. He leads the camel back to Medina. Subhanallah. Listen to what A'ishah says.

**[9:03]** Wallahi ma takallamnaa bikalimah. Wa la sama'tu minhu kalimah ghayra istirjaahu. By Allah, we didn't say a single word to each other. Nor did I hear from him any word except when he said, Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'oon. This is a noble man.

**[9:18]** Like entrusted with the task the Prophet ﷺ gave him. Finding the wife of the Prophet ﷺ in the morning as they left at night. And they didn't realize that she wasn't inside her howdaj. And now, you know, not looking at A'ishah radiallahu anha.

**[9:33]** Not talking to her. Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'oon. Does everything right. And they come back to Medina. And of course, you know, it's sad. Because both A'ishah and the Prophet ﷺ And you've got to think about like the jealous man.

**[9:50]** Right? Or a leader that is insecure. That would just for the sake of it. Just take out the punishment on that man. Just to quiet some of the scandal. Right? Maybe, you know, absolve the woman and go after the man. Think about how in the story of Yusuf, alayhi assalam.

**[10:08]** Right? The wife of al-'Aziz tried to just throw Yusuf under the bus. That's a very easy narrative to make here. But the Prophet, sallallahu alayhi wasallam, is the most noble of all creation. 'A'isha, radiallahu anha, is noble. She's not going to throw him under the bus. RasulAllah, sallallahu alayhi wasallam, is not going to throw him under the bus.

**[10:23]** Wallahi, ma'alimtu illa khayra. I know nothing about him except for good. Wallahi, ma'alimtu alayhi min su'in qat. In another narration. I've never known any evil about Safwan. So he doesn't become the scapegoat. He is not someone that's going to be, you know, thrown under the bus.

**[10:38]** No. It's not fair to 'A'isha. It is not fair to Safwan. The only thing that he did was he brought her into Medina on the camel. And of course that's when 'Abdullah ibn Ubayy ibn Salul, the chief hypocrite, made the comment that he was not safe from her and she was not safe from him.

**[10:56]** Indicating that there was something that went on between them. And so when Allah, 'azza wa jall, absolved 'A'isha, radiallahu anha, that becomes the story of the Muslim community. I want you to think if you were Safwan. Right? Like what about me?

**[11:12]** All this that was said about me. What about my honor? And we're going to see that the Prophet, sallallahu alayhi wasallam, he still used him in battles. He still honored him. The Messenger of Allah, sallallahu alayhi wasallam, certainly did not treat him any differently as a result of that.

**[11:27]** The Prophet, sallallahu alayhi wasallam, did not treat him with any suspicion. But beyond that, like what about his honor being restored and are there human feelings about what happened to him? And this is important to study these complexities. Safwan, radiallahu ta'ala anhu, you'll find in al-Dhahabi, rahimahu Allah, and others, the biographies, they narrate this.

**[11:47]** When he found out who slandered him, who did he confront? He confronted Hassan ibn Thabit, radiallahu ta'ala anhu. And so he went straight to Hassan. And Hassan had also, you know, in one of the narrations, like as he was doing poetry about the tribes,

**[12:04]** he mentioned the tribe of Mudar and perhaps something that would have hurt the tribe of Safwan. So there's bad feelings there anyway. Like you were one of those that slandered. And certainly Hassan, radiallahu ta'ala anhu, has a serious tongue, right?

**[12:21]** I mean a tongue that is powerful. So Safwan is a type like I'm a Bedouin. I'm someone that works in a military capacity. I don't speak with my tongue. I speak with my fists, like that type of personality. And so what does he do? He goes up to Hassan ibn Thabit.

**[12:37]** And he hits him with his sword, like the butt of his sword. And he says, talaqqa dhibahu as-sayfi anka fa-innani ghulamun idha hujjitu lastu bi sha'iri. He said, basically, you know, meet the edge of my sword because I am a man who when I'm attacked, I don't respond with poetry.

**[12:56]** If you attack me with poetry, I'm not going to respond to you with poetry. I'm going to respond to you with my hand. That's the personality type. And so he hit Hassan ibn Thabit. And he actually wounded him. Imagine now being the Prophet, sallallahu alayhi wasallam. Like, okay, I understand why Safwan did that.

**[13:14]** I mean at the end of the day, like he too has his feelings. He too was a man who was noble and did everything that he was supposed to do. And in the process, look what happened to him, right? So you have the case of Abu Bakr and Mistah. May Allah be pleased with them.

**[13:29]** Now you have the case of Safwan and Hassan. May Allah be pleased with them. So how is the Prophet, sallallahu alayhi wasallam, going to deal with this situation? Because technically speaking, he wounded Hassan ibn Thabit. And this was beyond the flogging, the punishment that Hassan already has to undergo.

**[13:46]** For slandering our mother 'A'isha. And this shows you the wisdom of the Prophet, sallallahu alayhi wasallam. RasulAllah, sallallahu alayhi wasallam, compensated Hassan, may Allah be pleased with him, for the wound. Even though Hassan was wounded for the wound that he caused to the life of the Prophet, sallallahu alayhi wasallam,

**[14:04]** to the wife of the Prophet, sallallahu alayhi wasallam, with that slander. RasulAllah, sallallahu alayhi wasallam, still in fairness, in justice, in mercy compensated Hassan. But he didn't punish Safwan, may Allah be pleased with him. It shows you how the Messenger of Allah, sallallahu alayhi wasallam, is balancing these things out.

**[14:21]** To where there is fairness, there is grace, there is an understanding of people's feelings. But that understanding of people's feelings never means departing from justice. And no person would have a right to be more hurt than the Prophet, sallallahu alayhi wasallam, by his companions in this regard.

**[14:36]** And of course when scandal takes place, then the highest figure amongst those scandalized is the one that's going to be hurt most at the end of the day. This was an attempt to undermine the Prophet, sallallahu alayhi wasallam. Of course Hassan, may Allah be pleased with him, did not have that intention.

**[14:51]** As Mistah did not have that intention. Subhan'Allah, I forgot to mention that Mistah's sister Hind was one of those, may Allah be pleased with her, that used to compose poetry in praise of the Prophet, sallallahu alayhi wasallam. These people loved the Prophet, sallallahu alayhi wasallam, but they fell. And the Messenger of Allah, sallallahu alayhi wasallam, did not discount them.

**[15:08]** And as we would see in the life of Hassan ibn Thabit, may Allah be pleased with him, 'A'isha, may Allah be pleased with her, still treated him with respect many, many years later. Even though she was hurt, of course, by what he had done in this regard. As for Safwan, may Allah be pleased with him, he was a quiet man.

**[15:23]** And indeed, he spoke with his hands, not with his tongue. He continued to be a person who was active in al-jihad fi sabilillah, in multiple battles. His death is actually disputed. So one narration says that he's one of the shuhada in Armenia.

**[15:40]** So he died as a shahid in Armenia. Another narration places him as one of the shuhada of Sumaysat. Sumaysat is in modern-day Turkey. And there is a maqam for him that is there.

**[15:57]** And it says, Subhan'Allah, that as he fought the Romans, that he broke his leg. And he continued to fight nobly in the battlefield, even after his leg was broken, radiallahu ta'ala anhu, until he died a shahid. So both of the narrations of his death mark him as a shahid, radiallahu ta'ala anhu.

**[16:14]** And again, there is a maqam for him, at least at the time that the sources were written. We're talking about 700 years ago. So I'm not sure if that's still the case around Sumaysat. May Allah, 'azza wa jall, be pleased with him. May Allah, subhanahu wa ta'ala, honor him.

**[16:30]** May Allah, 'azza wa jall, allow us to be amongst these honored people. And may Allah, 'azza wa jall, allow us to learn from this example, too, that sometimes our feelings will be hurt reasonably so. And sometimes we'll be slandered when doing the right thing.

**[16:45]** But in the process of that, Allah, 'azza wa jall, does not just understand the shortcomings and the redemption for those that cause the harm, but Allah, 'azza wa jall, understands that it's a process for us to come out of that harm as well that was caused to us.

**[17:00]** May Allah, 'azza wa jall, always allow us to deal with these in the most noble of ways. Allahumma amin. Jazakumullahu khayran. Wa assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh.
