## Description
One of the Prophet’s ﷺ Companions was the kind of man who could walk into a room and have everyone laughing. Nu’ayman ibn Amr (ra) was a gem, beloved for the joy he carried wherever he went. He pulled pranks on the Prophet ﷺ himself, talked his way into mischief no one else would dare, and once...

**[0:00]** Insha'Allah ta'ala we continue tonight in the theme of redemption. Sahaba who had very interesting lives with the Prophet ﷺ, who committed some pretty

**[0:19]** serious mistakes in the life of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, but who were offered a pathway back to Allah ﷻ that was absolutely beautiful. And the Sahabi that I'm going to start off with bi'idhnillahi ta'ala tonight, he's known as the funniest of the Sahaba.

**[0:37]** He's a Sahabi who when you read his biography you have to read it with a lot of disclaimers and with a lot of caution. Why? Because the types of stories that he's implicated in, radhiAllahu ta'ala anhu, are so outrageous in terms of the level of joking that he would do that it almost makes you wonder like how

**[0:56]** did the Prophet ﷺ tolerate him so much? And he's one of those Sahaba that as you're reading you keep going, is this even halal? Is this halal? Is this halal? Because of how much he pushed the boundaries. And that is the Sahabi by the name of Nu'ayman ibn Amr ibn Rifaa ibn al-Harith ibn al-Najjar

**[1:16]** al-Ansari, to the end of his name. Nu'ayman ibn Amr, radhiAllahu ta'ala anhu, who is from the tribe of Banu Najjar from al-Ansar. Banu Najjar, for those of you that may remember, these are the maternal relatives of the Prophet ﷺ.

**[1:32]** So this is a tribe, a sub-tribe of Khazraj and the maternal relatives of the Prophet ﷺ. And so by default he is an Ansari and he has the reward of the Ansar. And not only is he one of the Ansar, and this is something subhanAllah that's deeply profound

**[1:48]** with all of these companions that we're talking about. He marks all of the best incidents in Islam, but there's no documentation of him specifically in those incidents. So for example, some of the books of Siyar mention him as being in Bay'at al-Aqaba al-Akhirah,

**[2:06]** going out and giving the pledge to the Prophet ﷺ at Bay'at al-Aqaba. So of that elite group of companions that came to the Prophet ﷺ, the final time to Aqaba to give him the pledge before he made hijrah from Mecca to Medina.

**[2:22]** He's also Badri. He's one of the companions of Badr and I'm actually prioritizing these companions because they're the most elite of the companions of the Prophet ﷺ. The best of the Sahaba, the best of this ummah are the Badriyyun, are the people of Badr.

**[2:39]** He also witnessed Uhud, he witnessed Khandaq, and he witnessed all of the other important campaigns with the Prophet ﷺ. He's also one of the people of Bay'at al-Ridwan who took the pledge with the Prophet ﷺ under the tree that Allah ﷻ affirmed that he is pleased with.

**[2:58]** So he checks all of these boxes of the most elite of the elite of the elite of the companions of the Prophet ﷺ in terms of his resume. If you knew nothing about him and none of the stories that I'm going to mention and you just saw him in one of the books like by Ibn Hibban or Ibn Hajar that just mention

**[3:15]** people that checked off these boxes because of how rare they are, right? They're only a handful out of all the companions of the Prophet ﷺ, you'd say amazing. But he's known for his jokes. Everything about his biography has to do with the pranks that he would pull on the Prophet

**[3:33]** ﷺ and the companions and one of his bad habits by which the Prophet ﷺ taught him and taught the community that he didn't have to be resigned to that bad habit.

**[3:48]** So let's sort of place Nu'ayman just into how the Prophet ﷺ dealt with laughter as a whole. And this is something very beautiful that the Prophet ﷺ is someone who is described as in the hadith of Abdullah ibn Harith, مَا رَأَيْتُ أَحَدًا أَكْثَرَ تَبَسُّمًا مِنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّىٰ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ

**[4:07]** I never saw anyone that smiled more than the Prophet ﷺ. He smiled and laughed all the time and he caused other people to smile and laugh ﷺ. He smiled and laughed all the time and he caused other people to smile and laugh ﷺ. And this is despite him carrying the weight of revelation, the weight of the mission,

**[4:26]** despite him carrying the pain of all of those people that he had lost, the pain of persecution, the grief of having buried six of his seven children ﷺ, the slander, the pressure, everything that he went through. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ who was the most serious person about his mission in life

**[4:46]** and about pursuing the Hereafter was the person who smiled the most and who laughed the most and he did that from a place of sadaqah ﷺ, of charity. He said ﷺ تَبَسُّمُكَ فِي وَجْهِ أَخِيكَ لَكَ صَدَقَةٌ

**[5:02]** That a smile in the face of your brother is a charity for you. It's a good deed. And so he liked to meet people that way ﷺ and that was his default disposition. Now when it came to the types of jokes, the jokes of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ,

**[5:18]** were very dignified, very moderate, like everything else, very balanced. He did not exceed limits ﷺ. He would not, you know, incur a lie just to get a laugh out of people. So he only told the truth ﷺ.

**[5:35]** He didn't degrade people. He didn't belittle people. He didn't scare people. The jokes of the Prophet ﷺ were beautiful in that they were elegant and they made people feel good. As we talked about in the case of Zahir ﷺ and some of the companions that came before. But Jabir ibn Samurah, he says

The Prophet ﷺ used to pray Fajr. And he would remain in a state of dhikr until the sun would rise.

**[6:07]** وَكَانُوا يَجْلِسُونَ فَيَتَحَدَّثُونَ They would go to the Prophet ﷺ after that and they would circle around him and they would start to talk. Who had a dream last night? Who has a question that they want to ask? And then يَأْخُذُونَ فِي أَمْرِ الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ This is in Sahih Muslim.

**[6:24]** They would then talk about some of the old days. Tell stories from Jahiliyyah. So he said فَيَضْحَكُونَ وَيَتَبَسَّمُ صَلَّىٰ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ Everyone else would laugh. The Prophet ﷺ would smile.

**[6:39]** So he just had a big smile on his face. They would tell jokes. They'd remember stories from the days of Jahiliyyah. They'd chant some of its poetry. But the Prophet ﷺ again was dignified but approving. He liked that culture where people felt comfortable joking with him and laughing around him.

**[6:58]** Now when it comes to Nu'ayman, Nu'ayman is the extreme jokester. Almost every joke that I'm going to share with you from the life of Nu'ayman, don't do it. Any of it. And you could go to every one of these stories and I'm going to list them in sort of the order of how extreme they are.

**[7:17]** That's how I decided to take the jokes, how extreme these pranks are, how extreme these jokes are. You could take each one of them and you could scrutinize the chain of narration. You could scrutinize the sanad and you could say, well perhaps this narration is not authentic and this narration is not authentic. But the reason why Ibn Hajar and Ibn Abd al-Barr and Ibn al-Athir and the biographers still put these narrations is that they paint a picture of a man.

**[7:40]** They paint a picture of this companion of the Prophet ﷺ and what he was like in general. And how the Prophet ﷺ had to deal with different personalities that he could have crushed ﷺ upon the first arrival.

**[7:56]** And so the first way that he would deal with the Prophet ﷺ or the first joke that we find between him and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Again, Badri, Uhud companion, Khandaq companion. Like he was in the battlefield, he was doing the serious stuff too. But outside of that everyone knew him for his joking.

**[8:15]** Was that, no one would enter Medina from the oil sellers or the people that would sell honey or whatever it may be. Except that he would go to them. And when Nu'ayman liked something, there was once a man that was selling some honey.

**[8:31]** He took some of that honey and he said, be right back. He went to the Prophet ﷺ and he said, Ya Rasulullah, this is a hadiyah for you. This is a gift for you. So the Prophet ﷺ takes the honey. He eats from the honey. And then the seller calls Nu'ayman and says, what happened?

**[8:47]** You didn't pay me for the honey. And so he goes and he brings the seller to the Prophet ﷺ. Ya Rasulullah, you like the honey? Ya Rasulullah, it tastes good? Alhamdulillah. Now pay the man his price. Pay him what you owe him.

**[9:02]** A'ti hadha thamana hadha. The Prophet ﷺ says, awa lam tuhdih li. Didn't you give me this as a gift? And Nu'ayman radhiAllahu ta'ala anhu said, Ya Rasulullah, lam yakun indi thamanu. O Messenger of Allah, I don't have enough money to pay him. Wa ahbabtu an takula.

**[9:18]** But I would love for you to eat from it because I love to make you happy. And I knew that you would like this. Fa yadhaku nabiyyu sallallahu alayhi wa sallam. Wa ya'muru li sahibihi bi thamanihi. So the Prophet ﷺ would laugh. And the Prophet ﷺ would pay the man. No problem.

**[9:33]** The Prophet ﷺ did not turn this into a, hey, don't do this again. I'm sick of you bringing me stuff that's not actually mine. And forcing me to buy things that I don't actually want to purchase. That's Nu'ayman radhiAllahu anhu's personality.

**[9:48]** Okay. So this is the first narration. And this narration kind of shows an endearing relationship between him and the Prophet ﷺ. So he's joking with the Prophet ﷺ. And the Prophet ﷺ is the one who the joke is being pulled on.

**[10:03]** And yet the Messenger of Allah ﷺ obliges. And he pays the price. And he moves on. The next one is another degree of a little bit extreme with the prank. And it has to do actually with an interesting man.

**[10:20]** Sometimes, subhanAllah, you read the name of a person and you just sort of zoom out of the story. There was a man by the name of Makhrama ibn Nawfal. Makhrama ibn Nawfal. And he is from the elders of Banu Zuhra. And he's one of those who are described in the Qur'an

**[10:37]** as mu'allafati qulubihim. They're the ones who you give zakat to to reconcile their hearts. I mean, he came into Islam very late. And the Prophet ﷺ allocated extra spoils to these people because of their seniority and the difficulty of reconciling their hearts to Islam.

**[10:52]** Right? So there are people who came in very late into Islam. The Prophet ﷺ is giving them more than he's giving the Ansar. The Ansar are wondering why. And the Prophet ﷺ is explaining to them that, look, they go home with all the stuff. You go home with the Prophet ﷺ.

**[11:08]** This is actually a means of showing that love and reconciling their hearts into Islam. And the Prophet ﷺ gave him a very expensive hulla, a very expensive cloak as he was reconciling his heart to Islam

**[11:24]** that was worth 40 uqiyya, as is mentioned. So very expensive clothes and tried to bring him into Islam. Some of the narrations actually suggest that he is the one. There's a famous narration with our mother Aisha radiallaahu anha that there was a man that had entered

**[11:40]** into the Prophet ﷺ's home. And the Prophet ﷺ before he entered, he said ﷺ that, you know, what a miserable man from a tribe this is and he mentioned his harshness. But when he entered with the Prophet ﷺ

**[11:56]** he sat with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ engaged him with good akhlaq, with good character and then he left. And the Prophet ﷺ said Ya Rasulullah, you said that he's someone who's foul but you treated him so well.

**[12:12]** And the Prophet ﷺ mentioned that the worst of people are those that people leave off because they don't want to deal with their harshness. Right? So they kind of work around their temper, right? They don't want to deal with their harshness. So some of the narrations actually mention

**[12:28]** that that is Makhrama. Why am I giving you this about Makhrama radiallaahu anhu? Because this narration between Nu'man and Makhrama involves him all the way in the time of Uthman radiallaahu anhu and he was well over the age of 100 years old. So he reached over 100.

**[12:44]** He was blind and he needed to use the restroom. He needed to urinate. But because he was blind he started to urinate in a part of the masjid not realizing where he was. So people screamed and shouted to let him know that he was urinating in the masjid.

**[13:00]** So Nu'man radiallaahu anhu goes to him and he simply takes him to another side of the masjid and he says you can go here. So he starts to use the restroom in that place too and so people once again

**[13:16]** come screaming at him and he gets extremely upset and he says who brought me to this place then? Who's the one that brought me to this place? Because I was brought here and I thought that I was outside the masjid at this point so he said Nu'man

**[13:32]** he said if I see him I'm going to pop him on the head or if I come across him I'm going to pop him across the head with my stick. So what does Nu'man do? He comes to him and he says to him are you looking for Nu'man? He says yes. So he says come with me. Takes him over to

**[13:48]** none other than Sayyidina Uthman radiallaahu anhu So the man hits Uthman radiallaahu anhu and the people say what are you doing? Uthman radiallaahu anhu and Uthman radiallaahu anhu he says let it go, let it go he said that's Nu'man

**[14:04]** and he's a person of Badr. We let it go, right? And they moved on. Pretty extreme prank. You're getting the picture, right? This is a don't try this at home, don't try this in your masjid. It's giving you the imagery of a man who kept

**[14:20]** pushing the limits radiallaahu anhu And Banu Zuhra by the way which leads to Makhrama, they actually were getting together and they wanted to hurt Nu'man and Uthman radiallaahu anhu was the one who said no, let it go it's just Nu'man. Being Nu'man he's a Badri companion, don't worry about it.

**[14:36]** Right? It's not a big deal. The third narration involves the time of the Prophet ﷺ and it goes even a step further. And that is that there was an Arabi man a Bedouin man that came to the Prophet ﷺ

**[14:52]** and he entered into the masjid and he tied his camel outside the masjid and he was taking his time with the Prophet ﷺ inside the masjid and this is sort of like when the companions know who the funny person is amongst them and they kind of this is what human beings do, right? Kind of instigate it

**[15:08]** like push them a bit and say hey you know what would be really funny what you could do here that would be really funny he's taking his time with the Prophet ﷺ and the camel is outside so some of the young companions they said to Nu'man r.a.

**[15:24]** that you know لو نحرتها فأكلناها if you would sacrifice the camel and we could eat from it فإنا قد قرمنا إلى اللحم like we're craving it looks really good right like that's a camel that you could sacrifice and we could eat from it

**[15:40]** and then don't worry like the Prophet s.a.w. will pay him the price of his camel right? So Nu'man says what? Okay he goes, he takes the camel he sacrifices the camel and

**[15:56]** the poor man comes out talk about an introduction to Islam it's like he's a Bedouin and perhaps he's coming to ask the Prophet s.a.w. about Islam understand Islam for the first time he comes out and his camel is sacrificed so he comes outside and he starts screaming

**[16:13]** where is my camel oh Muhammad where is my camel is missing oh Muhammad, Sallallahu alayhi wasallam so the Prophet s.a.w. comes out of the masjid he says what happened and he says to the companions who did that they said Nu'man did it so what did Nu'man do? Prophet s.a.w. went looking for him

**[16:32]** and Nu'man went hiding in the garden of Adwa'a bint al-Zubayr ibn 'Abd al-Muttalib he went hiding in the garden like in sort of like a pit like in a ditch in her

**[16:50]** backyard because he knew the Prophet s.a.w. was gonna come looking for him so the Prophet s.a.w. he goes looking for Nu'man r.a. after what he did I mean this is a pretty big deal he sacrificed someone's camel without his permission distributed the meat and the Prophet s.a.w.

**[17:10]** walks into the garden he says has anyone seen him so there's a man who says in his voice that ya Rasulullah I don't know if I've seen him but he points to where Nu'man is so the Prophet s.a.w. goes to him and Nu'man comes out and his face is covered in dirt and the leaves and the bugs and everything from

**[17:29]** that place and the Prophet s.a.w. says to him ya Nu'man what caused you to do this why would you do something so extreme he says ya Rasulullah the people

**[17:44]** that sent you to me the ones that sent you to find me are the same ones that told me why don't you sacrifice the camel and the Prophet s.a.w. starts washing he starts cleaning his face and the Prophet s.a.w. was laughing again not because he approves of the action

**[18:03]** but because this is who he's dealing with and the Prophet s.a.w. himself goes and he pays the thaman he pays the man the price of his camel and obviously in a generous amount right to cover for what was taken from him so no you don't steal someone's car outside and say don't worry Sheikh Yasir Burjas will pay

**[18:22]** the price of the car right but it's showing you once again a place that he was willing to go and the Prophet s.a.w. said I'm tolerating a character of this type of nature now by the way like someone who's that bold and they're

**[18:39]** joking you can imagine that in the battlefield it's probably extremely bold as well right when they say someone like requires a certain level of jura like a level of audacity usually that audacity matches a courage about him and that certainly seems to be the case with this companion

**[18:55]** the most extreme joke from him is the one that's narrated by Umm Salamah which involves him and involves another companion who is

**[19:11]** very similar to him whose name is Suwaybit ibn Sa'd ibn Harmala Suwaybit ibn Sa'd ibn Harmala who is one of the Muhajireen from Mecca very interesting he's actually from Ashab al-Hijratain

**[19:31]** so he's one of those that migrated to Abyssinia and he's one of and then migrated to Medina afterwards also a Badri companion right so he also checks these boxes so insha'Allah may Allah allow us to be from the

**[19:46]** people of Jannah we have some funny Sahaba that we can also get to talk to there as well Ibn 'Abd al-Barr mentions that he like Nu'ayman r.a. was known for his excessive joking so he's he's someone that pushes the boundaries too when he jokes so Umm Salamah r.a.

**[20:05]** says that Abu Bakr r.a. kharaja tajiran ila Busra Subhan'Allah this brings the other series back into this that Abu Bakr r.a. went out on a trade route to Busra remember we were talking about Busra in Sham the gateway to greater Syria

**[20:23]** and he took with him on this trip Nu'ayman and Suwaybit some of the commentators would say that you know when you travel you want people that can keep the journey light you want people that can kind of keep you entertained on

**[20:39]** the journey this is like live entertainment to bring like two companions of the Prophet Sallallahu alayhi wasallam that are known for their excessive joking with you so Nu'ayman and Suwaybit are just back and forth back and forth back and forth these are two companions that never stop with each

**[20:54]** other and that's really nice too it makes the time pass right when you go on a journey to have people that can actually joke and people that can laugh so Suwaybit and Nu'ayman are both Badri and they're with Abu Bakr so these are three Badriyoon of the companions I mean Abu Bakr r.a. was the

**[21:10]** best of them but they're also among serious companions Suwaybit r.a. kana 'ala az-zad he was in charge of the provisions meaning the food and you have to ration for the food and the drink and how you're going to get through the long journey so Nu'ayman r.a. comes up to him and he

**[21:27]** says I'm hungry give me some food I'm hungry give me some food so Suwaybit says no hatta yaji Abu Bakr until Abu Bakr comes I'm not gonna give you any food Nu'ayman says give me some food I'm hungry so Suwaybit

**[21:43]** says I'm not gonna give you food until Abu Bakr comes Nu'ayman says listen if you don't give me food I'm gonna do something right so Suwaybit said until Abu Bakr comes so he said like I'm going

**[22:00]** to I'm gonna poke if you don't give me food so Suwaybit basically says give it your best shot so what does Nu'ayman do he goes to a tribe nearby and he says listen he said I have this slave he said

**[22:19]** he's an Arab slave very eloquent very healthy very smart he's really good right and he said I'm willing to sell him to you but he said but the only

**[22:35]** thing is he's a little off so if you take him he's gonna keep saying I'm free I'm free so that's his only thing like he's very eloquent but he's gonna insist that he's free he's like if you don't want him like don't mess up my slave basically like leave him to me but if you're

**[22:54]** interested let me know it's right over there great guy I can sell him to you ten camels for him so I mean these guys have no idea what's going on they said really okay and he's convincing they said all right sounds sounds like a

**[23:10]** deal sounds good so poor Suwaybit he's there with his goods and then Nu'ayman comes with this tribe and he says there he is he's the one so they go and they start to tie him up and they say

**[23:26]** we've purchased you come with us he says I'm free I'm free I'm free they said we know we know we already know just come with us they take Suwaybit a slight

**[23:42]** distance away Abu Bakr comes back and he says where's Suwaybit say Nu'ayman sold him to that tribe over there Abu Bakr goes explains to them what happened gives them back their camels brings back

**[23:58]** Suwaybit. Suwaybit and Nu'ayman I guess you can say there's a thick skin that they have for each other goes back to normal everything is fine they come back to Medina and then they sit with the Prophet Sallallahu alayhi wasallam and they sit with the companions and they tell the Prophet Sallallahu alayhi wasallam what happens and

**[24:15]** Umm Salamah r.a. says Fadahika nabiyu Sallallahu alayhi wasallam wa ashabuhu min thalika hawla the Prophet Sallallahu alayhi wasallam and his companions spent a year laughing about that incident please do not tell anybody else to come get somebody else don't try

**[24:35]** this at home don't try this at your masjid don't try this ever the point that you're getting is that this man used to push the boundaries all the way and you can imagine that the Prophet Sallallahu alayhi wasallam dealing with a

**[24:52]** personality like this could have had a very heavy hand with him r.a. but he didn't and there's a hikmah to how the Prophet Sallallahu alayhi wasallam is going to deal with him by the way it's haram to take something and to make your brother think that you've taken something from them the Prophet Sallallahu

**[25:09]** alayhi wasallam said do not take the matah don't take the possessions of your brother hazlan au jada like like don't take it out of gesture or seriousness it is haram to jump out at someone it's something very common in our culture by the way that you jump out and the Prophet Sallallahu alayhi wasallam

**[25:25]** mentioned don't don't scare your brother or sister right so I'm not telling you to take the halal and haram of joking from this I'm telling you to take an overall picture of a companion that was very very very funny excessive

**[25:42]** but loved by the Prophet Sallallahu alayhi wasallam and when you're a healthy community you know how to adapt to different personalities you don't expect everyone to be molded in a certain way especially in that time and the Messenger of Allah Sallallahu alayhi wasallam understood how to take people with their

**[25:59]** personalities and to gradually solidify them in Islam and to take the good of them. Now what is the painful part of it and where do we get from beyond the joking obviously he has all of these noble traits but we get to the

**[26:19]** alcohol addiction and this is the one that I want to focus on in terms of redemption not the joking scrutinizing the stories and saying is this story sahih is that story sahih I'm saying you have a picture of a man who used to joke a lot but we also struggled with alcohol and I want you to

**[26:39]** appreciate for a moment by the way I kid you not Subhan'Allah that in Hajj there's a brother that's telling me that like my brother is ready to embrace Islam but he just can't give up drinking I'm talking about this year in Hajj asking me to make du'a for his brother and he's saying he knows it's the truth

**[26:58]** but giving up alcohol is very hard for him the Arabs at the time of the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam had a drinking culture like it wasn't just like they drink on occasions they always drank they drank for sadness they drank for joy they

**[27:13]** drank in their weddings they drank in their festivals they drank as 'ibadah in terms of their worship they drank in everything that they did right so alcohol was very much so embedded in the culture that the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam was coming to and 'A'ishah radiAllahu ta'ala anhu explains that if the first ayah to come

**[27:36]** down from Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala were do not commit zina or don't commit adultery don't drink alcohol the Arabs would have said we can never give up adultery we can never give up alcohol but Allah 'Azza wa Jall sent down

**[27:56]** Surah al-Mufassal, the short surahs of the Qur'an that emphasize Allah, the hereafter, Jannah, and that make the reward of paradise sweeter than anything that you could get in this world from any type of possession and make the punishment of the hereafter bitter enough that any sweetness you get

**[28:15]** from is not worth that punishment in the hereafter so solidify the connection to Allah 'Azza wa Jall solidified belief in Jannah and belief in paradise and hellfire to the point that people were able to give it up as a

**[28:30]** community that doesn't mean as individuals people did not struggle when the prohibition came down now some people struggled not everyone was able to give it up right away some of them had relapses with their khamr we know 'Umar radiAllahu anhu said that when the prohibition came down people started breaking their bottles right and they started spilling

**[28:48]** the khamr in the streets but at the end of the day like these are real addictions someone's gonna relapse right this is a large community of companions some of them are gonna have trouble and so these biographies tonight really have to do with a person that's trying to get out of a sin that

**[29:07]** feels addicted to particular sins because sins can become addictions and there is very little that is as pervasive and as addictive as alcohol as khamr and the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam said la yazni zani hayna yazni wa huwa mu'min wa la yashrabul khamr hayna yashrabuha

**[29:25]** wa huwa mu'min that a believer does not commit adultery while he's a believer he does not drink while he's a believer that means that at the time of committing these deeds it's like Iman is not there it's not that you're a kafir there's no takfir here you're not a disbeliever because a major sin does not make you a

**[29:42]** disbeliever but like you are you are disconnecting from Iman in order to commit these major sins these destructive sins with Allah subhana wa ta'ala and it was especially hard for some of that generation to get rid of it even if they swore at times that I'm done with it I'm done with it I'm done

**[30:00]** with it people relapse and they can be sincere and that's why you have commentary on these narrations of someone who says if I drink ya Rasul Allah will I be punished yes and if I repent will I be forgiven yes and if I drink again right yes if I repent again yes that people will relapse so Nu'man

**[30:19]** radiAllahu ta'ala anhu is someone who struggled with the prohibition of alcohol and 'Uqbah ibn al-Harith radiAllahu ta'ala anhu he narrates anna al-nabi Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam utiya bi Nu'man aw bi 'ibni Nu'man now in this narration he says Nu'man or the son of Nu'man wa huwa sakran while he was

**[30:39]** drunk fashakka alayhi Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam see this is this is really different here this was hard for the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam to see Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam felt pain right like as much as he laughed and smiled felt joy and by the way perhaps in this

**[30:59]** is a wisdom for the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam overlooking some of the other transgressions of Nu'man because from the hikmah of a person doing da'wah is that if someone is committing a greater sin then you have to choose your battles and so

**[31:15]** maybe you let some of their indiscretions go some of their transgressions go not that you give permission not that you say it's halal but because like we have to deal with something that's much bigger so excessive joking and drinking alcohol these are you know very far apart

**[31:31]** Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam wa radiAllahu anhu wa Allahu ta'ala a'lam Allah knows best Allah knows best if this is the reason but it could be a hikmah to overlook some of these things because like this is a problem fashakka alayhi Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam felt pain he genuinely was hurt Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam

**[31:46]** this was hard on him 'alayhi al-Salatu wa al-Assalam to see people fall so he ordered Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam for him to be struck and yadarbuhu so he was hit radiAllahu ta'ala anhu he was punished as he should be punished because there

**[32:04]** are accountability mechanisms for committing these types of sins and he was struck and he says wa kuntu fiman darabahu that I was one of those who struck him so sin hurts the heart of the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam it was hard on the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam but then look at the narrations as they go on Abu Hurayrah radiAllahu ta'ala anhu he says that a man came to the was brought to

**[32:22]** the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam and he was drunk and the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam said adribu hu so strike him and while he was being struck qala ba'du al-qawm some of the people said akhzaahu Allahu may Allah disgrace him and the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam said la taqulu hadha don't say that

**[32:43]** la tu'inu alayhi al-Shaytan don't support the Shaytan against him don't support the Shaytan against him subhanallah like wait a minute the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam ordered his punishment what's the difference between him

**[33:02]** being hit and someone saying to him akhzaahu Allahu may Allah disgrace him see there's a punishment that purifies and there's a humiliation that only causes further despair Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam is not trying to humiliate and this is the

**[33:18]** perfect wisdom that the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam as much as he has affection he loves Nu'man he loves him and it's very obvious that he loves him Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam but his affection does not cancel accountability but his correction does not crush him like I'm not trying to kill him or crush him right there's a

**[33:38]** ruling that has to be applied but we want to build him up we want to bring him back to his senses so do not support the Shaytan on him by cursing him and this is actually something very important here too that the Shaytan wants people to not believe that they

**[33:56]** can be redeemed and that's why when you relapse when you sin he comes to you and he tells you that there is no rahmah from Allah for you and Allah says don't despair from the mercy of Allah right but Shaytan wants you to believe there is no rahmah for you after you committed the sin

**[34:17]** despair and so when someone says akhzaahu Allahu and you're hearing that from a companion it hurts it can break you Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam says don't support the Shaytan on him and so I want you to think about when you mock someone in their sin I'm not saying you whitewash the sin by the way

**[34:32]** this is the fine line that we have to find you're not erasing the sin or the magnitude of the sin but you're also not erasing the person and someone says don't judge that person no I'll judge the sin the sin is a sin it is objectively haram what they're doing and there can be no

**[34:50]** permission giving of that haram but at the same time I'm not going to curse that person I'm not going to say that person has no hope in Allah 'Azza wa Jall I'm not going to say anything to that person that's going to further shut the door on them right kick them on their way out when they're leaving from Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala and say you might as well resign yourself to the sin so that's

**[35:09]** the second narration the third one is actually from 'Umar al-Khattab radiAllahu ta'ala anhu and 'Umar radiAllahu ta'ala anhu says that there was a man named 'Abdullah and he says his laqab his nickname was Himar, Himar which means donkey right by the way like I'm sure I'm traumatizing

**[35:26]** a lot of Arab kids got called that many times by their parents right so his nickname was that right now some of the scholars say this is talking about Nu'man probably not a separate person because it just matches up the other narrations to the other narrations and he came and he was

**[35:45]** brought and he was drunk and the people cursed him but listen to what the prophet says so don't support the Shaytan against him and then he says do not curse him because I swear that I know that he loves Allah and his messenger

**[36:09]** that's probably the most stunning part of the entire hadith he loves Allah and his messenger this is that balance that we can never find

**[36:25]** right the sister who does this the brother who does this are they doing nothing wrong or are they you know cursed like wait find that balance the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam is not being sentimental here he's not removing the sin he ordered the punishment Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam

**[36:43]** but the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam did not erase the person he didn't become cruel and he could still see a man drunk and say he loves Allah and his messenger Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam I know he loves Allah and his messenger Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam

**[37:01]** imagine being Nu'man and hearing the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam say that about you I know you love Allah and his messenger Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam you want to say that the person is bigger than the sin you love Allah and the messenger you're better than this you fell the sin does not have to be your identity your identity is you're still

**[37:19]** a someone who loves Allah and the messenger Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam and so of the lessons here is the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam punishes the act but he protects the person and he's telling us don't make Shaytan's job easier by convincing this person that he no longer

**[37:37]** belongs to Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala right and don't aid the Shaytan against him by disconnecting him from the community so he has Allah and he has the messenger of Allah Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam inside of him the community corrects him so he doesn't fall further prey to the Shaytan the

**[37:56]** community doesn't hand him to the Shaytan the community corrects him in a way that says you're better than this you love Allah I know you love Allah I know you have something in your heart that is good and I want you to increase that goodness and act upon that goodness also of the lessons by

**[38:13]** the way is the 'ulama mentioned that ma'asiyah and Iman can go together the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam is testifying that he has faith but he sinned and he committed a major sin in this regard so unlike Habib and Abu Lubabah who committed a major sin and then there was a way back to Allah

**[38:32]** Nu'man is repeating the sin he's struggling with the sin and there's a repetition here and some of you might remember by the way from the names of Allah series when we talked about this the difference between al-Ghaffar and al-Ghaffur al-Ghaffar refers to Allah 'Azza wa Jall forgiving

**[38:50]** the repeated sins the quantity you keep sinning Allah is al-Ghaffar Allah 'Azza wa Jall keeps on forgiving if you repent to him sincerely al-Ghaffur is the magnitude of Allah's mercy that doesn't

**[39:06]** matter how bad the sin was Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala can forgive a sin no matter how big it actually is even the sins you can't remember you can't recall it's all encompassed under Allah 'Azza wa Jall al-Ghaffur subhanahu wa ta'ala so this is a Badri companion

**[39:26]** and of the testimonies perhaps of how the Prophet saying what he said about him and believing in him finding his redemption is that we don't know of him ever being punished for this

**[39:41]** ever again and he lived through the whole era of Khulafa al-Rashideen and there is no documentation of him ever relapsing into the sin again and he has a Sahabi who is Badri he is one of the Ansar he is one of those that we love and we make du'a for and he's one of those that we hope to meet in Jannah

**[40:01]** we make dua for and he's one of those that we hope to meet in jannah
