## Description
How beautiful would you be if an angel wiped your face? It happened to Jarir ibn Abdullah (ra), a Yemeni companion of the Prophet ﷺ. He was called “the Yusuf of this ummah.” But he had another special gift—the power of persuasion. The Firsts is a weekly video series that chronicles the lives of the...

**[0:00]** As-salamu alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu. I seek refuge with Allah from the accursed Satan. In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

**[0:19]** All praise is due to Allah, Lord of the worlds. No one is worthy of worship except Him. And there is no enmity except against the wrongdoers. And the final destination is for the righteous. And upon his family and companions. And peace be upon them.

**[0:58]** But as we've been speaking about people that have been coming to the Prophet ﷺ in the year of the delegations. We're kind of getting towards the end of his life ﷺ in terms of some of these companions that came from outside.

**[1:13]** And understanding a bit of the dynamics around that. And so what I wanted to do in these last two lectures for this season in particular. Was talk about two people who brought with them a very notable presence from the area that they came.

**[1:31]** And alhamdulillah, as we've covered many of these chiefs. You'll notice that the geography starts to sort of build out. So you have a greater understanding of the spread of Islam through multiple lens. But today is a very beautiful companion in every way.

**[1:47]** Literally noted for his beauty. And he is as Al-Imam Al-Dhahabi says, Jareer Ibn Abdillah Al-Bajali. And he describes him as a person. He says Malik Al-Bajali, the king of the Bajali.

**[2:05]** So the Bajali tribe. Jareer Ibn Abdillah. And he describes him as. He was a man of incredible character. Unlike anything that anyone had heard of before.

**[2:22]** Kamil Al-Jamal. Of perfection in his beauty. Of perfection in his creation. So the man that we're going to speak about today is another one of those Abu Bakras. Abu Bakra gets lost because of Abu Bakr. Jareer Ibn Abdillah gets lost because of Jabir Ibn Abdillah.

**[2:39]** A lot of people just simply conflate those two names. But if you're reading in the books of Hadith. He has over a hundred Hadith from this one particular companion. And he has an incredible story with the Prophet ﷺ. So as he's described as a Malik.

**[2:56]** As someone who is a king. He's not at the level of Adi Ibn Hatim. Or at the level of Thumama. Or some of these other companions that we've described. But when you talk about the Bajali tribe. You are talking about a collection of tribes from Yemen.

**[3:13]** So he's particularly a Yemeni king. And there are a bunch of sub-tribes that come under his tribe. And they happen to be fractured at the time that he embraced Islam with the Prophet ﷺ. But when he embraces Islam. Nonetheless you have a couple of thousand or so that belong to the overall parent tribe.

**[3:32]** That he is in charge of. So it is significant. But he's not one of those big players that we've been speaking about before. In terms of the political situation. However, the Prophet ﷺ sent who to Yemen? Who did the Prophet ﷺ send to Yemen to call them to Islam?

**[3:48]** Mu'adh Ibn Jabal (رضي الله عنه). And after Mu'adh the interest is spreading. Especially along the route from Medina to Yemen. And even Mecca to Yemen at that point. After Fath Mecca. The news is starting to get around. And so some of these tribes are starting to come to the Prophet ﷺ to embrace Islam.

**[4:06]** Some of them as we said. Undoubtedly there is a political slant to it. Right? Which is, look, this is clearly the dominant force in the area right now. Let's ally ourselves to the dominant political force. Jarir (رضي الله عنه) is someone who comes to the Prophet ﷺ.

**[4:22]** Not like Adi Ibn Hatim (رضي الله عنه). Not running away. But someone who's genuine interest in Islam. Went up from Yemen. He heard about Islam. He immediately decided to come embrace Islam with the Prophet ﷺ. And he brings with him 150 people from Yemen to embrace Islam with the Messenger ﷺ.

**[4:43]** Now let's kind of play this out inshallah ta'ala as if you are him. Alright? It's Ramadan in the last year of the Prophet ﷺ's life. Jarir according to some narrations will only get to be with the Prophet ﷺ for 40 days.

**[4:59]** 40 days. Over a hundred hadiths. Alright? But he's catching the very end of the blessed life of the Prophet ﷺ. It's Ramadan. The last year. I mean you can imagine how crowded Masjid al-Nabawi is.

**[5:16]** And what the vibe of Medina is like. Allahumma ballighna Ramadan. May Allah allow us to live to see Ramadan. With the largest community that the Prophet ﷺ ever had. Where the Prophet ﷺ had a situation as Aisha (رضي الله عنها) said. That the Masjid walls were about to break.

**[5:32]** Right? Burst from the amount of people that were there in these blessed Ramadan nights. And he is a man. As we said just to give you the appearance. Because it directly ties to how the Prophet ﷺ will describe him. According to Umar bin Al-Khattab (رضي الله عنه).

**[5:49]** Qala Umar Jarirun Yusufu hadhihi al-Ummah. Jarir is the Yusuf of this Ummah. And he was very clear what he meant. Jarir (رضي الله عنه) was distinctly handsome. He was someone (رضي الله عنه).

**[6:04]** It was as if he was molded in perfection. That is how he is described. He was so tall that he would reach the hump of the camel when he would stand up. So you talk about a very imposing presence too. A beautiful and imposing presence. Said that his shoe size was like the elbow to the fingertips.

**[6:22]** Obviously there is a bit of an exaggeration there. But I mean he has, Allah knows best how much is an exaggeration. But the point is that a very, very imposing presence (رضي الله عنه). He had a beautiful saffron dye to his beard.

**[6:37]** And when he walked into a room (رضي الله عنه), all eyes immediately went to him. (رضي الله عنه). So how does this work when he embraces Islam? Jarir (رضي الله عنه) says, لمّا دنوت من المدينة When I was coming forth to Medina and I had a hundred fifty of my tribesmen.

**[6:55]** He said that I took to a corner. And I got off of my camel. And he says that I beautified myself. و لبست حلّتي I wore my best clothes. Basically I got ready for the moment of meeting the Prophet (رضي الله عنه).

**[7:11]** قال فتخلت المسجد He said so I entered into the masjid. فإذا برسول الله ﷺ يخطب The Prophet ﷺ was giving khutbah. And while the Prophet ﷺ is speaking and Jarir enters into the back of the masjid.

**[7:26]** قال فرماني الناس بالحدق That everyone stopped and turned around and looked at me. So everyone was staring at me. And the Prophet ﷺ He stopped talking. So think about that awkward silence.

**[7:42]** It's like when Kairi came to the masjid today. That's how you all were right? Everyone stops and goes, what? So all eyes turned towards Jarir. So Jarir says to himself, This could either be really good or really bad.

**[7:57]** Right? So before he approaches the Prophet ﷺ He said that I said to someone there, I said, يا عبد الله هل ذكر رسول الله ﷺ من أمر شيئا Did the Prophet ﷺ say something about me? He said نعم ذكرك بأحسن ذكر

**[8:12]** He said yes the Prophet ﷺ mentioned you in the best of ways. قال بينما هو يخطب While he was in the middle of his khutbah. Suddenly in the middle of his khutbah The Prophet ﷺ stopped. And he said إنه سيدخل عليكم من هذا الفجي من خير ذي يمم

**[8:31]** He said the best of Yemen is about to walk through the door. The best of Yemen is about to walk through the door. قال ألا وإن على وجهه مسحة ملك And verily his face. It's like he's been touched by an angel.

**[8:47]** مسحة ملك describing his extreme beauty (رضي الله عنه) And the fact that خير ذي يمم It's a heavy statement. The best of Yemen. I mean you have in your congregation People from the Ansar subhanAllah

**[9:02]** Of course the Ansar are originally from Yemen. But people from Yemen that are of an incredible posture that have embraced Islam. Incredible status. And obviously the Prophet ﷺ when he calls someone The best of Yemen. He's not just talking about his physical presence. The Prophet ﷺ is praising what he knows

**[9:17]** Of the heart and the akhlaq The heart and the character of Jarir. And he never met him before. This is the beauty of it. The Prophet ﷺ has not met him yet. And the ulema mention that Clearly if the Prophet ﷺ is going to stop in the middle of a khutbah قد جاءه جبريل

**[9:32]** It could be that Jibril (عليه السلام) came to him and told him That by the way someone's outside. He's about to enter into the masjid. And gave him that presence or gave him that description. And his face was wiped by the hand of an angel. Is something that has incredible blessing to it.

**[9:47]** So he says That I entered. Everyone stopped. Looked at me. I asked the guy. And this shows you how big the masjid has gotten at this point. I asked the person. I said did he say something about me. He said he spoke good about you. And this is what he said about you. Anas (رضي الله عنه) says

**[10:03]** In another narration. Some of the scholars say that this is the same incident. So it's either the initial embrace of Islam. Or another incident. But he says كنا عند النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم فأقبل جرير ابن عبد الله فظن الناس بمجالسهم

**[10:19]** That we were with the Prophet ﷺ And then Jareer entered. And people were holding on to their spot next to the Prophet ﷺ فلم يوسع له أحد And no one made space for him. Now this also shows you the growth of the community.

**[10:34]** This is the last Ramadan with the Prophet ﷺ. They are crowded around the Prophet ﷺ. No one's moving from their spot for anybody else. So they kind of look at him in the back. But at the same time we're not losing this closeness, this proximity we have

**[10:50]** to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. So the Prophet ﷺ رمى إليه ببردة كانت معه Prophet ﷺ took off his cloak and he threw it, tossed it towards Jareer

**[11:05]** and he told him to come close and he says دونك يا أب عمر Come close O Abu Amr He said فجلس عليها Sit on the cloak that I just threw to you. Like what a way to honor someone, right?

**[11:20]** So not only make space for him he said go ahead and sit on this cloak. فتلقاها بصدره ونحره So Jareer took that cloak and he held it close to him and he said أكرمك الله يا رسول الله كما أكرمتني

**[11:36]** May Allah honor you O Messenger of Allah as you have honored me and he started to kiss the cloak touches his chest with it and he puts it close to him He is deeply moved by the embrace of the Prophet ﷺ already of him and the Prophet ﷺ does not know him yet

**[11:52]** they haven't even spent time with each other yet and the Prophet ﷺ said إذا أتاكم كريم قوم فأكرموه If someone of nobility comes to you then show him honor, show that person honor. So this is the first interaction with him عليه الصلاة والسلام

**[12:08]** ورضي الله تعالى عنه Now the next narration is in the house of the Prophet ﷺ and the narrator is عدي بن حاتم رضي الله تعالى عنه So now Adi is an insider to the Prophet ﷺ who we spoke about, the Christian king who also embraced Islam

**[12:24]** and is now with the Prophet ﷺ قال لما دخل جرير على النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم When Jareer (عليه السلام) entered upon the Prophet ﷺ ألقى له وسادة Remember the Prophet ﷺ only had one cushion in his room And remember that was something

**[12:40]** that shocked Adi بن حاتم as well that the habit of the Prophet ﷺ was to take that cushion and to tell the guest to sit on it while he sat on the floor ﷺ So he gave him his cushion ﷺ and Jareer sat on the ground and Jareer sat on the ground

**[12:56]** I'm sorry, Jareer sat on the ground فقال النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم أشهد أنك لا تبغي علوان في الأرض ولا فسادة أشهد أنك لا تبغي علوان في الأرض ولا فسادة I can tell, I bear witness that you are not a man who is seeking power or corruption on this earth Clearly, you have good intentions

**[13:12]** The humility of Jareer (رضي الله عنه) from the very start He didn't walk in like a king He came in humble to the Prophet ﷺ No mention of himself And the Prophet ﷺ is praising Jareer And the Prophet ﷺ

**[13:28]** is elevating the importance of Jareer (رضي الله عنه) in the Majlis And SubhanAllah, this is where many of the hadith that will use the story of Jareer by the way is in the hadith من تواضع Whoever lowers themselves رفع Allah عز و جل will elevate them Whoever lowers themselves لله for Allah

**[13:44]** Allah will elevate them When Jareer kept on putting himself down The Prophet ﷺ kept on making him more prominent in the gathering Every time Jareer enters in, the Prophet ﷺ is elevating him and he is downplaying himself But everyone looks at him and is absolutely captivated by the man (رضي الله عنه)

**[14:00]** And Jareer (رضي الله عنه) He says, كان رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم تأتيه وفود العرب At this point now This is the end of the life of the Prophet ﷺ He says the delegations of the Arabs were coming from all over to embrace Islam

**[14:16]** with the Messenger ﷺ فيبعثوا إليّ The Prophet ﷺ would send for me to be present with him when they would be coming So he said فألبسوا حلّتي I'd wear that same suit, حلّة is literally a suit by the way Just not the suit that you know of

**[14:32]** But you can imagine what حلّة actually refers to, it's something formal, so he said I would wear my حلّة And he said ثم أجيه فيباهي في النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم So the Prophet ﷺ It was like he would boast with my presence, what does that mean? He'd bring me

**[14:48]** close to say that I have this سيد, I have this great noble man that is with me (رضي الله عنه) And the Prophet ﷺ would make him prominent as the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was accepting the delegation of the Arabs from all over

**[15:04]** But what are the advices the Prophet ﷺ gave to him? You can imagine that a person of that خلق a person of that creation can lose his character So he says قال لي رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم

**[15:20]** The Prophet ﷺ said to me إنكم رؤن قد حسّن الله خلقك You are a great person فحسّن الله خلقك You are a man who Allah ﷺ has beautified in creation فحسّن خلقك So beautify your character

**[15:36]** Your real value your real worth, O Jareer is not in that Your real worth, your real value is this. As if to tell Jareer that if other people are impressed by this, what impresses Allah ﷺ is that

**[15:52]** If other people see this Allah عز و جل sees that So Allah ﷺ gave you something very unique in terms of your physical presence make your character presence equally impressive and beautiful Allah is giving you an opportunity

**[16:08]** And then we see in the بيع that the Prophet ﷺ took for him So subhanAllah this is one of the most beautiful elaborations on the story of Jareer (رضي الله عنه) When the Prophet ﷺ would take بيع from you, when he would take a pledge from you The Prophet ﷺ would obviously

**[16:24]** reinforce لا إله إلا الله محمد رسول الله and the idea of defense, right? That you will fight alongside the Muslims, that you will protect the borders of Islam, that you will abide by the community, like any pledge would have, like any بيع would have But then the علماء mentioned that

**[16:40]** sometimes you can find that the Prophet ﷺ added a sentence or two and it always had to do with character Right? So for example, (رضي الله عنه) بايعت النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم على ألا أسأل ناس شيئا The بيع with the Prophet ﷺ

**[16:56]** was, I will never ask anyone for anything Be an independent person When the Prophet ﷺ took the بيع from the Ansar, the Prophet ﷺ gave them you know, a lot of advice about their morals, about their ethics and reshaping, right? So obviously avoiding الكبائر, avoiding

**[17:12]** Zina, avoiding adultery, avoiding السرقة, avoiding robbery and upholding family ties So whether you ask the Prophet ﷺ for نصيحة, for advice So if a Sahabi comes to the Prophet ﷺ and says, Oh Sunni, give me advice the Prophet ﷺ gives them very specific

**[17:28]** words of advice, or if he took a بيع from you ﷺ sometimes he adjusted it to the person that was in front of him With Jareer (رضي الله عنه) when he took his بيع with the Prophet ﷺ the Prophet ﷺ

**[17:44]** بايعه على النصح لكل مسلم النصح لكل مسلم The Prophet ﷺ took بيع with him on the condition that he would always have good will to the Muslims. النصح لكل مسلم. This is a problem if you read

**[18:00]** English books sometimes that it will be translated as, he took a بيع from the Prophet ﷺ to always give advice to the Muslims نصيحة is one element of النصح نصح means good will Right? Well-wishing for your brother or your sister

**[18:16]** نصيحة is an element of that, it's a manifestation of that to give someone sincere advice comes from a place of good will. That's why almost nothing online is نصيحة, even if the YouTube title says نصيحة It's meant to be a فضيحة, it's meant to humiliate

**[18:32]** someone, it's meant to put someone down. It's rarely going to have a place of good will to it نصيحة is that you give someone sincere advice from a place of well-wishing, you want goodness for them so you give them advice. But the Prophet ﷺ took the بيع from him على النصح

**[18:48]** لكل مسلم to have good will to every Muslim. And subhanAllah there are more stories about him in this regard than any companion that he held on to that بيع with the Prophet ﷺ And the stories are plentiful

**[19:04]** One of them, the most obvious manifestation was when جرير, because he was, ma sha Allah, someone extremely courageous, skilled in battle جرير would never take the spoil of war beyond what everybody else took He said, إنما أنا رجل منكم I'm just one of you

**[19:20]** So I take the same share as everybody else from the spoils There's no أمير or lack of أمير here. No, even though he was the أمير of the caravans, he was the leader of the caravans he always takes the same share as everyone else. That نصح is also with his family جرير (رضي الله عنه) chose

**[19:36]** to live an extremely humble life And so it's narrated from his children and he had إبراهيم and he had منذر and he had عبيد الله and أيوب So he had some beautiful names for his children جرير would give everything away

**[19:52]** pretty much. He was an extremely generous person when something came to him because he was the أمير because he was the leader of his people that before we could even smell it, it already went to the poor. And he sort of sourced it back to النصح لكل مسلم Look, there are people on the outside, they're Muslims. I care about them. I have to show them

**[20:11]** that goodwill. But one of the most famous stories is in the marketplace that جرير (رضي الله عنه) one time sent a servant to purchase a horse, a very particular type of horse. So the servant

**[20:27]** purchased the horse for 400 درهم and he comes back to جرير and he said I got it for 400 درهم Now 400 درهم is a steal for that horse. All right, but perhaps the man who sold the horse knows that it's going to جرير and so he gave it to him for cheap or something like that, but it's a steal

**[20:46]** for the horse. So what do you do when you usually get a discount like that? Say الحمد لله It's the فضل of Allah سبحانه وتعالى, right? And by the way, if you get a discount on some sort of online thing, you don't have to go back and return the product, right? And say no, you didn't charge me enough, right? This is again something that جرير has for himself spiritually

**[21:04]** جرير says 400 درهم, that doesn't make sense. It's worth more than that. So جرير says take me back to the seller. So you go to the seller. He said you sold this for 400 درهم, right? He said yes. He said but it's not worth 400 درهم. It's worth more than 400 درهم. So he said would you be pleased with 500 درهم?

**[21:20]** He said yes. He said would you be pleased with 600 درهم? He said of course. He said would you be pleased with 700 درهم? He said yes. So would you be pleased with 800 درهم? He said yes. He said all right, it's worth 800 درهم, so I'm going to give you 800 درهم. So here's another 400 درهم because that's what the horse is worth.

**[21:39]** And then جرير starts to walk away and the seller is absolutely baffled by what just happened. Like who does that? Who comes back and gives you twice of what they sold it to you for and says that's what it's actually worth. So جرير comes back to him and he says to him, by the way I'm not

**[21:58]** I'm not a مجنون, I'm not crazy. This isn't coming from جنون. He said I'm not doing this because I'm an insane human being, right? And he said I'm doing this because بَيَعْتُ الرسول ﷺ

**[22:14]** Because I gave بَيْعَة to the Prophet ﷺ on the basis of النُّصح, of goodwill to every Muslim and your horse is worth more than that and I didn't want to take advantage of you.

It's that you love for your brother what you love for yourself in all affairs. فالبَيْعْ والشراء when it comes to buying and selling, when it comes to family affairs, you always love for your brother what you love for yourself. That's the peak of goodwill that you think about what would I want

**[22:48]** in that position. And so جَرِير, there are multiple narrations of him, he's in the marketplace and if he's selling and someone makes him an offer he says you know actually it's more than that, I'm sorry it's less than that, you're paying me too much. So جَرِير would sell less than

**[23:05]** what was the asking price and جَرِير (رضي الله عنه) would add on to what he would pay for something because جَرِير always put himself in the position of the other person. What a beautiful characteristic. If he was the buyer he put himself in the position of the seller, if he was a seller

**[23:21]** he put himself in the position of the buyer and this was his way (رضي الله عنه). Now with the Prophet ﷺ he also has one of the most beautiful descriptions in الشمال. قال ما رآني رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم

**[23:37]** إلا تبسم في وجهي. He said the Prophet ﷺ never looked at me except that he smiled in my face. He never looked at me except that he smiled in my face ﷺ. In another narration قال ما حجبني رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم. The Prophet ﷺ

**[23:52]** never excluded me or put me behind anything. The Prophet ﷺ always welcomed me in and he included me عليه الصلاة والسلام. Why is this so significant? Because Medina was super crowded by this point. This is no longer, and like look any community can relate to that.

**[24:12]** We talk about it here in our community, you know, those of you who were here for a long time like the old days, right, the smaller masjid, the smaller community, everyone knew each other's name and it was so small and then it got big and so many people came, right, and then now like it's getting bigger and people don't know each other's names, right, those basic things start to get lost

**[24:31]** as the community grows. Medina was bustling by the time the Prophet ﷺ died because people were literally coming from all over the world to try to make their way into Al Medina to be close to the Prophet ﷺ and the Prophet ﷺ has to honor the Abu Bakr and Umar and Uthman and Ali and Bilal and so on and so forth of Al Medina.

**[24:51]** But still with that, Jareer is saying that the Prophet ﷺ never failed to smile at me and the Prophet ﷺ never made me feel excluded. So even though I was a new Muslim and of the newest Muslims, only 40 days before the death of the Prophet ﷺ,

**[25:06]** he brought me in عليه الصلاة والسلام and he included me amongst his people ﷺ and this is from the khuluq of the Prophet ﷺ, from the character of the Prophet ﷺ. There's another narration from Sayyidina Ali (رضي الله عنه) and Ali (رضي الله عنه)

**[25:24]** says and this is attributed to the Prophet ﷺ but it's a broken chain so it's not authentic to the Prophet ﷺ, it's authentic to Ali (رضي الله عنه) himself, قال جرير من أهل البيت ظهرا لبطن. That Jareer (رضي الله عنه) is one of us,

**[25:40]** the members of Ahlul Bayt, the family of the Prophet ﷺ, both outwardly and inwardly. We count him amongst us. How beautiful, subhanAllah, only a month or so with the Prophet ﷺ and Ali (رضي الله عنه) is saying he is already considered to us like Ahlul Bayt. Abdullah ibn Umar (رضي الله عنه), he says, he repeats what his father said about him,

**[26:01]** he said that my father called him the Yusuf of this Ummah, he was the Yusuf of this Ummah (رضي الله عنه) and he said and he shared five things with the Prophet ﷺ that no one else shared. SubhanAllah, what a praise from Abdullah ibn Umar (رضي الله عنه), he said he shared five things

**[26:17]** with the Prophet ﷺ. قال أطيب جسدا ووجها, he had the best physical character or the best physical creation and the best face, so he shared that with the Prophet ﷺ وسلم. قال طيبا وثيابا, his perfume and his clothes. So he shared with the Prophet ﷺ

**[26:39]** all of these physical traits and even the way he carried himself (رضي الله عنه). Some of the ulama say that the Prophet ﷺ used to love to wear the clothes of who? Al-Yaman. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to prefer the clothing of the people of Yaman.

**[26:55]** So his clothes were like the clothes of the Prophet ﷺ, his food was like the food of the Prophet ﷺ, his looks were like the look of the Prophet ﷺ, his smell was like the smell of the Prophet ﷺ. And Abdullah ibn Amr ibn Aas (رضي الله عنه) said and on top of what ibn Umar said, so he's commenting on what ibn Umar said, he said I confirm

**[27:12]** everything that he said and I'll add a sixth one. قال طواضعا, his humility was like the humility of the Prophet ﷺ. Allahu Akbar, like that's such a beautiful way to describe a person. He resembles the Prophet ﷺ in all these things but with only 40 days with the

**[27:29]** Messenger of Allah ﷺ. They said about him (رضي الله عنه) that he was a man of incredible hikmah and composure and those two things go hand in hand. His composure meant that he was never rattled by a situation and that's what made him such a competent leader.

**[27:45]** So in the battlefield he was always calm, collected, as if nothing was moving around him (رضي الله عنه). Not slow and hesitant, calm, collected, composed and he always had the best opinion about a route to take in battle or go this way or go that way and he could always calm a people down. So in one situation

**[28:03]** in one battalion their Amir was killed and he said مات أميركم, he said that your leader just died فاستغفروا له, seek forgiveness for him and Allah عز و جل is going to give you another Amir, keep at it. He could always tell you what route to take so he was extremely wise, composed,

**[28:18]** calculated (رضي الله عنه). And the first mission of the Prophet ﷺ He said to him He said to Jareer, will you not relieve me of ذو الخلصة? Who knows what ذو الخلصة is?

**[28:39]** Does that resemble anything? Anyone remember what that is? SubhanAllah it's actually really relevant to the moment. ذو الخلصة was a particular idol in Yemen that they had and the Prophet ﷺ or it was called كان يسمى

**[28:58]** الكعبة اليمانية, the Yemeni Kaaba. Imam al-Dhahabi رحمه الله says it was called الكعبة اليمانية, the Yemeni Kaaba. So it's a whole like sanctuary, it's a whole setup. The people would come and do tawaf around it and they had this whole dedication to ذو الخلصة. Why is

**[29:17]** it significant? Because if you remember Abu Huraira (رضي الله عنه) said in the authentic حديث The Prophet ﷺ said that the day of judgment will not come, the hour will

**[29:33]** not come until the women shake their bodies around ذو الخلصة. The women of Daws which was the tribe of Abu Huraira, also a Yemeni tribe, will shake their bodies around ذو الخلصة. Meaning the dancing and the جاهلية will come back. And so when you start to see idols being once again

**[29:51]** in some of these places and you think no way, no way, no way, the Prophet ﷺ is saying it will happen. And it's interesting the ulama mentioned, subhanAllah the Prophet ﷺ mentioned an indecent act around it. He didn't mention tawaf around it, he mentioned people dancing and shaking around it, in an indecent way. I'm trying to be

**[30:11]** you know as obvious but subtle as possible here, right. What does that show you? This is جاهلية all over again. So this is like a concert like of environment, you know like environment, type environment. This isn't just tawaf, right, or ibadah or the reconstruction of an idol. So Jareer

**[30:28]** was the one who the Prophet ﷺ said look it's time for this thing to go. Prophet ﷺ let some of these things wait a bit sometimes in a region because of sensitivities. But now enough of Yemen had embraced Islam, enough of the tribes of Yemen had embraced Islam. He said can you go and can you do away with it. And Jareer (رضي الله عنه)

**[30:47]** , he says so you know I got together 150 of my men in Medina and we decided to do it. Now subhanAllah in this entire situation Jareer (رضي الله عنه) says I had a problem. What it was is

**[31:06]** because he was so tall, clumsy on the horse, right. So you know I can relate. I'm a little, I try to pretend like I'm not bad on a horse. I love riding horses. I love riding camels. It's an incredible you know experience and it's obviously a good thing for us to learn how to do

**[31:23]** it. But I'm not going to lie I'm a little clumsy when I get on there sometimes. Like how do I fix this, right. How do I, how do I get myself set here, right. And if Jareer (رضي الله عنه) is that tall it's a problem. On top of that his feet are so big that they don't fit in the

**[31:39]** in the in the saddle. Like it's it's not working for him. So the whole, the whole awkwardness of how he would ride a horse and Jareer (رضي الله عنه) says I used to fall off sometimes. Like I had a hard time with my horse. So he's got the mind. He knows what he wants to do. But he has a problem and he's going on an important mission. So he comes to the Prophet ﷺ

**[31:57]** and he tells the Prophet ﷺ look this is what it is. And before that, SubhanAllah it's even said that because he wasn't good on a horse all of his battles on foot. He was like I'm not even going to bother doing the horse. So he said that the Prophet ﷺ وضع يده على صدري. He put his hand on my chest and he said

**[32:16]** اللهم ثبته على الخير واجعله هاديا مهديا. Oh Allah ثبته على الخير give him firmness on the horse and make him هاديا مهديا. Guided and guiding. And that's from the khuluq of the Prophet ﷺ that he'd always add the

**[32:33]** dua. He'd do ziyad of what was asked. He'd do extra of what was asked. So when Um Suleim says about Anas make dua for him in this way the Prophet ﷺ adds two more. He does this for everybody ﷺ. When you ask him for a dua he makes dua for what you asked for and more عليه الصلاة والسلام. And it's in the realm of hidayah and acceptance

**[32:51]** guidance and acceptance and all these types of things. So SubhanAllah he says that after the Prophet ﷺ made that dua he said when I would ride a horse it was as if me the horse and the wind were all one entity. Like it was so smooth that when I was on a horse

**[33:12]** the horse's legs became like my feet. SubhanAllah. And he said the wind as well the rih as well because sometimes if it gets stormy or windy that affects it right. So he says like the entire dynamics of my horse riding changed after that one dua from the Prophet ﷺ. I would

**[33:27]** ride a horse and I would flow with the horse with absolutely no issues. And he said the Prophet ﷺ made dua for all of the men that went out on that mission to destroy the خلصة. He said he made dua for us five times ﷺ and then

**[33:47]** specifically for me when I told him that I was clumsy on a horse he made that dua for Allah عز و جل to give me ثبات and then اللهم اجعله هادئا مهديا. Oh Allah make him guided and guiding. So that's one mission. He was the one that actually destroyed this idol. May Allah

**[34:06]** سبحانه وتعالى protect us from its return. Allahumma ameen. The second mission because remember it's a very short time. The second mission was a mission of da'wah. And this one he actually went

**[34:22]** into Yemen to carry out this mission from the Prophet ﷺ speaking to a man named Al-Qulay'ah. A chief named Al-Qulay'ah who was a wealthy chief from Yemen and the Prophet ﷺ wanted Jareer who has this position and has this posture

**[34:40]** to go and call these people to Islam. So Jareer went to Al-Qulay'ah and Al-Qulay'ah accepted Islam and on top of that he freed 4,000 slaves as his embrace of Islam. Like subhanAllah what a

**[34:56]** beautiful entry into Islam right. To have that type of an act of charity and emancipation. I embrace Islam and I'm freeing all 4,000 of these slaves also shows you how much wealth the man had. For him to be able to do that shows you the power and the position that he had. So Jareer (رضي الله

**[35:15]** عنه) said he actually came back with me to the Prophet ﷺ. Now by the way side note here Yemen because I don't know if you all know this but Saudi Arabia Yemen you know some of these things are relatively new right. So Yemen is not what it used to be so when we say

**[35:31]** Yemen this is one of the closer towns to the Prophet ﷺ right. What's considered Yemeni at that time is closer to the Prophet ﷺ right in Jazirat al-Arab in the Arabian Peninsula and in that entire geography. But he's coming with the chief and you can imagine the joy that I brought him to you Ya Rasulullah. What do you think happens when

**[35:52]** he gets back to Medina? He finds out that the Prophet ﷺ died. Completely heartbroken, crushed him right and SubhanAllah this is this is really deeply profound. The whole story of Uwais al-Qarni (رضي الله عنه). The beautiful man from Yemen who stayed behind

**[36:12]** from the weft from the delegation of his tribe because he had to take care of his mom and so he missed being a Sahabi and the Prophet ﷺ said that this man when he comes you're going to meet a man he's telling the Sahabi later on make dua or ask him to make dua for you. Ask him to seek forgiveness for you because he's a blessed man. So there's some people SubhanAllah that were

**[36:30]** coming from Yemen to the Prophet ﷺ after he sent Muadh (رضي الله عنه) to them and they're embracing Islam and coming and they just missed the Prophet ﷺ in the case of Jazir. Imagine I mean that 40 days felt like a lifetime right or that time that he had with the Prophet ﷺ. 40 or up to 90 days as some of the

**[36:47]** ulema mentioned. The point is that short time he had with the Prophet ﷺ even if it's a week with him felt like a lifetime. Like I was immediately someone dear to the heart me and to his home. He treated me like family right away. He praised my character. He gave me specific nasiha and now he has passed away ﷺ. So Jazir was crushed at the death of the

**[37:08]** Messenger ﷺ as he was coming with the excitement of a chief that had embraced Islam but that would actually end up only being a Tabi' because he missed the life of the Prophet ﷺ. So he manages still to narrate a hundred hadiths, a hundred

**[37:23]** narrations from the Messenger ﷺ. I'm going to mention this one because it's really interesting but Jarir is one of the core reasons for the masih controversy. The wiping over the socks. Ibrahim al-Nakh'i he narrates from Hammam

**[37:39]** أنه رأى جريراً (رضي الله عنه) and he saw Jarir relieve himself ثم توضع and then make wudu ومسح على خفيه (رضي الله عنه) and then he wiped on his socks and he said رأيت النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم يفعل. I saw the Prophet ﷺ

**[37:58]** doing this. Now what type of socks? That's where the fiqh is different and it's valid اختلاف. It is valid اختلاف. How thick does it have to be? I'm not starting that fight right now. It's valid اختلاف. It truly is valid اختلاف and may Allah reward all of our ulema and guide

**[38:16]** us towards always a sawab in this and all things in regards to our deen. Allahumma ameen. But just from a perspective of why this is so important is that Ibrahim says فكان يعجبهم هذا لأن جريراً من آخر من أسلم. This used to make the sahaba happier. This made the Muslims

**[38:32]** happy because Jareer was one of the last people to become Muslim. What does that mean? Can anybody tell me in fiqhi terms? Why is that important? I see some Qalam students here. Come on make your show your seminary man. Show them what's up. What is it? More accurate. Why would it be more accurate?

**[38:54]** What is it? It wasn't abrogated. Barakallahu fiqh. You still count man. Your son's in Qalam. You still get to represent. It wasn't abrogated. It wasn't mansukh because obviously there some of these rulings were evolving in the lifetime of the Prophet ﷺ. So the fact that Jareer

**[39:11]** became Muslim at the end and he did this at the end means that this is one of the last actions of the Prophet ﷺ means that this is the deen. And so the only real اختلاف is how thick the khuf is and how long you can do masah over and things of that sort. It also explains a little

**[39:27]** bit about why a controversy would even exist there because clearly this was a later practice of the Prophet ﷺ. Right? So it makes sense from a fiqh perspective why this would come up later on. Okay. So the Prophet ﷺ passes away in the time of Abu Bakr as-Siddiq (رضي الله عنه).

**[39:47]** Another incident happens. One of the conversations that Jareer had with the Prophet ﷺ before he passed away, he said, Ya Rasulullah al-Bajila that my people are very divided. That there's a lot of fracturing that's happened amongst the sub-tribes.

**[40:04]** And he wanted the Prophet ﷺ, he wanted the Prophet ﷺ to bring them back together. And he thought Islam was an opportunity to bring them back together. And the Prophet ﷺ had intended to help him with that. So his intention was, get back from Yemen, bring all of them now and let's sit around

**[40:20]** the Prophet ﷺ. Let's get rid of all these disagreements now that we're Muslim and let's hold on to Let's hold on to the rope of Allah. Fāmatun nabiyu ﷺ, the Prophet ﷺ died. So he said, I went to Abu Bakr (رضي الله عنه) and I said, I made this request of the Prophet ﷺ to

**[40:38]** bring my people and to unite them on Islam. But now the Prophet ﷺ has passed away. Will you help me? And he said that Abu Bakr (رضي الله عنه) turned to me and Abu Bakr (رضي الله عنه) said, haven't you heard about what your people did? And he said, what?

**[40:54]** Your people apostated because they're not paying zakah. And Abu Bakr (رضي الله عنه) considered those who didn't pay the zakah to be from the murtaddin. Those who denied the obligation of zakah to be from the apostates. So forget about uniting them right now. Right now we have to fight them.

**[41:11]** And this is obviously tragic for Jarir. Jarir still hopes that after they bring them back, they can unite them. But now, subhanAllah, he joins, Abu Bakr (رضي الله عنه) sends him to join Hurub al-Ridda, the battle

**[41:26]** against the apostates and to fight the people and bring them back to La ilaha illallah. So he joins actually now the army of Khalid (رضي الله عنه). As it ends up turning out, subhanAllah, that his people were not of the main factions of

**[41:44]** the Hurub al-Ridda. So they made tawbah once again, they repented once again, and they embraced Islam once again. So what does Jarir want to do now? He says, all right, they made tawbah, let me bring them back to Medina so that we can fulfill what we said we would fulfill.

**[42:00]** Let's come back to Medina now and Abu Bakr (رضي الله عنه) can unite these tribes. And he said, so I got back to Medina and I heard the news, maata Abu Bakr (رضي الله عنه). Abu Bakr passed away too. So now Umar (رضي الله عنه) was the Khalifa.

**[42:19]** So he goes to Umar (رضي الله عنه) and he said, look, the Prophet ﷺ told me he would sit my people down. Abu Bakr said he would sit with my people and he would bring them, he'd help me bring them together, bring all these tribes together. He said, now I'm asking the same from you and my people are eager to, you know, join

**[42:37]** right now the ranks of the Muslims, the armies of the Muslims and to participate basically, to become full participants of the community. They weren't Muslim for too long, Musaylimah took advantage of them in their newness in their Islam. Now they're Muslim once again. So can we, can we do this?

**[42:53]** And Umar (رضي الله عنه), he basically says to Jarir, he says, listen, Abu Bakr (رضي الله عنه) forbade those that apostated and then came back to Islam from serving in the army.

**[43:08]** Remember Tuleyha (رضي الله عنه) couldn't serve, right? That was for the safety of the community, like fine, your tawbah will be accepted, but we can't trust you yet to fight on the side of the Muslims that's putting the community at risk. So he said, I can't do that part, but let's see what we can do.

**[43:25]** So Jarir comes into, he goes back and he convinces his people and he comes back into Medina with 2,000 men and they're holding their weapons. And Umar (رضي الله عنه) is like, whoa, whoa, whoa, hold on. What are you doing here? Like, where did these men come from?

**[43:40]** How did you get 2,000 of them to suddenly come and show up in Medina all armed up and with their weapons? So Jarir said that I took 100 of my men and I assigned them, I said, each one of you are responsible for coming as 20. Let's go and let's do islah between the people.

**[43:55]** Let's go reconcile. SubhanAllah, look at his brain, his mind as an amir, as a leader. He says, let's go get, each one of you needs to go and get your group of people, the people that you know that you can convince. You get 20, so 100 times 20, it is 2,000, right?

**[44:11]** All right. Okay. No, 100 times 20, sorry, is 2,000. It's late night. I'm sorry. Okay. 2,000. Jazakum Allah khair. He gets 2,000 men.

**[44:27]** Okay. I have an accounting degree, by the way. I'm just going to put that out there. All right. 2,000 men. Alhamdulillah, I stuck to sharia. All right. 2,000 men. 2,000 men come back to Umar (رضي الله عنه) and Umar (رضي الله عنه) says, look, I can't put them in the army just yet because that's Abu Bakr (رضي الله عنه)'s

**[44:44]** rule. Umar (رضي الله عنه) had not yet overturned that rule. He did with, at some point he did, especially as the Persians were extremely aggressive and they're fighting two fronts with the Persians and the Romans. So he basically used them in different ways, brought them together, used them in different

**[45:02]** ways. And as Abu Bakr al-Takir, rahimAllah, and others, al-Khatib mentioned that Umar (رضي الله عنه) established the first concept of post offices. SubhanAllah, how? Because at that point, the communication in the ummah needs to be a lot more fluid and

**[45:17]** rapid. So they established post offices where they had trustworthy messengers and it's easy to delegitimize, to send mixed communication, to send an army in the wrong way because people were becoming Muslim and then fighting on behalf of Islam or against Islam so fast that it's hard to tell who your men are sometimes.

**[45:33]** There's a lot that's happening. So this was Umar (رضي الله عنه)'s attempt where he established post offices, right, where the mail will be sent or a letter will be sent and then there are trustworthy messengers that are responsible for going back and forth between the different battalions of the ummah.

**[45:49]** Then finally, the Persians became very aggressive and they needed, the Muslims needed reinforcements in a very particular area. So Jarir was able to take his people from al-Madinah to al-Iraq and subhanAllah, he took them in less than two weeks. And they said that that was from the barakah of the dua of the Prophet ﷺ for his horse

**[46:09]** and his ability to move, right. And then that barakah took the whole army, right, that they cut that distance in half the time that it would take another group of people because of the speed and the finesse of Jarir (رضي الله عنه) on his horse and from the barakah with their tribes as well.

**[46:28]** Now he and Umar (رضي الله عنه) have a beautiful relationship. There's so much wisdom that we could glean. I know that subhanAllah, Salatul Isha is near so I'll try to summarize. But there's so much wisdom. One of them, of his narrations with Umar (رضي الله عنه) is that he one day took off his upper

**[46:48]** garment so he could make wudu, which is very common, his rida. And Umar (رضي الله عنه) poked him and said, khud rida'ak, put your shirt back on. It's very common for the men when they were doing wudu, right, to do so. Why was that? He was like, what was that all about?

**[47:04]** Umar (رضي الله عنه) did not want that to be a fitna for the women. So social media, gym selfies, don't say mashAllah awrah, right. You know, think about this. There's a concept of haya in our religion.

**[47:19]** So some of the scholars say it's not always about halal and haram and awrah here. Like you know what you're doing. Okay, so even if you're covering your awrah, it could be a fitna for people. And this isn't the way of our deen. We have haya in our religion, right. We have modesty in our religion. And so that's one lesson. From it, the other one is that Umar (رضي الله عنه) said, na hatha misla yusuf, that this

**[47:38]** man is like Yusuf. Meaning what? Hasad, a'in, envy will come towards him like it came to Yusuf (عليه السلام). Fal yughati nafsahu, let him cover himself instead. So that's one narration. The other one, so don't be a fitna for the people. You can pause your gym selfies and think about the modesty that you have online.

**[47:58]** The other one though, subhanAllah, it's such a beautiful narration. Umar (رضي الله عنه) was with Jareer (رضي الله عنه) one time in a gathering. Fa tanafasa rajul. In Arabic, it means that a man passed, broke winds, right, passed gas basically, loudly

**[48:18]** in the middle of a gathering. Obviously, out of nowhere and it wasn't intended. But someone broke their wudu. So Umar (رضي الله عنه) looked at the gathering. Qala azamtu ala sahibi hadhihi.

**[48:34]** I'm saying to the one who did this, qum fatawadha, get up and make wudu. Clearly somebody lost their wudu. Somebody get up and make their wudu. And whoever did it didn't want to get up and make wudu. It's embarrassing. The whole gathering is there and the one guy that clearly, you know, passed gas is going

**[48:51]** to have to get up and make wudu in front of everyone. So Umar (رضي الله عنه) said it three times and he was upset that no one was getting up. And then Jareer (رضي الله عنه) said, i'zim alayna jami'an. Ya ameer al-mu'mineen, go ahead and tell us all to make wudu. So Umar (رضي الله عنه) said, you know what, for myself and for all of you, azamtu

**[49:09]** alayya wa alaykum lama qumna, fatawadha'na thumma sallayna. He said that it's for all of us, get up, let's all get up, let's all make wudu and let's all pray. So it's one of the ways of protecting the dignity of a Muslim, right?

**[49:25]** And Umar (رضي الله عنه) said something very beautiful to Jareer (رضي الله عنه). He said, yarhamuka Allah, may Allah have mercy on you. Ni'ma sayyidu kuntu fil jahiliya wa ni'ma sayyidu kuntu fil Islam. You were a great leader in the days of ignorance and you're a great leader in Islam.

**[49:40]** Allah has given you a way of thinking about things and a way of going about leading that's very beautiful. And one narration, ni'ma al-amiru ant. What a good leader you are, what a good amir you are. So Umar (رضي الله عنه) praised his wisdom and his way of thinking to just spare that one man of embarrassment.

**[49:56]** SubhanAllah, that incident in and of itself, think about it. Someone makes a mistake or someone's in a situation. The man didn't even do anything haram, right? Is there a way to cover? This is an nush'i li kulli muslim. This is to him also. He's thinking about that man like this is my nush'i, this is my goodwill to him to

**[50:12]** not put him in an awkward situation. Let's all go and let's all make wudu' instead. And of course this person subhanAllah who (رضي الله عنه) who had this much goodwill towards the Muslims, you can imagine how much fitna broke his heart when the Muslims started

**[50:29]** to fight each other, right? And Jareer is a man who, remember Ali (رضي الله عنه) said he's like family, he's like ahlul bait. And Jareer wanted no part (رضي الله عنه) in fighting between Muslims or the factions that were arising. And Jareer (رضي الله عنه) withdrew himself altogether.

**[50:46]** He wanted to be nowhere around fitna at all. This is part of his nush'i li kulli muslim. To the point by the way, and this is narrated from Adi ibn Hatim along with him that they said la nuqeemu bi baldatin yushtamu feeha Uthman. We're not going to sit even in a city where Uthman is being insulted (رضي الله

**[51:04]** عنه). If the people start to insult Uthman (رضي الله عنه), we don't even want to be in the same city. And so they withdrew themselves from Medina, they went to Al-Iraq in Kufa. Ali (رضي الله عنه) asked Jareer to participate and Jareer (رضي الله

**[51:20]** عنه) said to him, listen, the Prophet ﷺ told me to go to the people and to fight until they say la ilaha illAllah. He said and they said la ilaha illAllah. I'm not going to fight a people that say la ilaha illAllah. I'm not going to go against anyone that's embraced Islam. My job was to call the people to Islam, not to fight them out of it.

**[51:36]** So no, I'm not going to participate in any friction or fitna between the Muslims. And because of that, he went to a place called Qirqisiyya, Qirqisiyya, which is an island in the middle of nowhere so that he could stay away from the fitna.

**[51:54]** So he could worship Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala and he could stay away from the fitna. And of course, this is a manhaj, this is a methodology of some of the companions. They dealt with this in different ways and this was his way of dealing with it. He said, I didn't become Muslim for this. I didn't become Muslim to fight other Muslims. And of course, one of the signs of the hour and what the Prophet ﷺ

**[52:10]** mentioned to us that as the day of judgment would come for us at some point, if it comes to a place where fitna becomes too wild, that if you have to take to the hills and raise sheep in the valley, then do that. That's better for you than to put yourself in that situation.

**[52:25]** He lived a long time (رضي الله عنه), despite that. His children became narrators of his. So he had Ibrahim and Ayub, his two children Ibrahim and Ayub, and he also had al-Munzir and Ubaidullah, four sons who narrated from him and became a part of his legacy in that

**[52:43]** regard, (رضي الله عنه). And when he passed away, he was brought back to the city and the sahaba cried extensively over him because they remembered all the praise of the Prophet ﷺ for this man, even though he was a sahabi for just a little over a month, 40 days.

**[53:00]** But his beauty, his character, (رضي الله عنه), distinguished him at a very early period in his own life in Islam. So he died actually in the year 51 after hijrah, (رضي الله عنه). We ask Allah to be pleased with him, we ask Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala to be pleased with

**[53:17]** all the companions of the Prophet ﷺ. We ask Allah to send his peace and blessings upon our master Muhammad ﷺ and to gather us with him and the companions of al-Firdaws al-A'la. Allahuma ameen. BarakAllahu fikum.
