**[0:00]** Al-Fajr Prayer Alhamdulillah wa rabbal alameen. We're continuing now with the firsts. I ask Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala to accept everyone's ibadah in Dhul Hijjah.

**[0:15]** May Allah azza wa jal accept the Hajj of those who made Hajj. And may Allah accept the du'as of all of those around the world, from the oppressed to the righteous believers, and those that are praying for victory in the midst of so much oppression. Allahumma ameen.

**[0:31]** SubhanAllah, I want to start off with a preface. A very important one. In regards to the sahabi that we are covering today, which is Husayn ibn Ali radiAllahu ta'ala anhuma. We're going in order of the companions,

**[0:47]** with a very particular scheme in mind. As we said, we are now going through the companions who were children of other companions. And so we're kind of looking at their lives now, in their own separate capacity. As we have previously covered them, in regards to the biographies of their parents.

**[1:04]** But with every single one of these biographies, I want you to think about our present day. I want you to think about Gaza. I want you to think about tyranny. I want you to think about what personal conviction looks like,

**[1:19]** in the face of corruption. And what victory looks like, in different ways. And it just so happens that as we are covering the life of al-Husayn radiAllahu ta'ala anhu. We all know about the very tragic ending,

**[1:34]** of the life of al-Husayn radiAllahu ta'ala anhu. The shahada of al-Husayn, the martyrdom of al-Husayn radiAllahu ta'ala anhu. But how Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala puts victory even in that. And we all know about the courage that he shows in the face of a tyrant. And so it would be worthless and fruitless to cover this biography,

**[1:53]** without trying to extract some of the same conviction, and the courage of the man that we are speaking about today, radiAllahu ta'ala anhu. So the first broader narrative that I want you to do, or to think with, is the one that you are living in right now. A lot of times we try to transport you back to a place in history.

**[2:12]** This time I actually want you to live deeply in the present, with the life of al-Husayn radiAllahu ta'ala anhu. The second one is the love of the family of the Prophet salAllahu alayhi wasallam. You know, subhanAllah, when we started the series,

**[2:27]** we went through the family of the Prophet salAllahu alayhi wasallam. We went through Fatima al-Zahra, Khadijah, Ali, may Allah be pleased with them. That inner household of the Prophet salAllahu alayhi wasallam. And you can think about how much love the Prophet salAllahu alayhi wasallam had for those people that were in his household. And he says salAllahu alayhi wasallam,

**[2:43]** Ahibbu Allaha lima yaghdukum min ni'mihi Love Allah for the blessings that He bestows upon you. Wahibbuni li hubbillah And love me for the love of Allah. Why do you love the Prophet salAllahu alayhi wasallam so much? You love him for the love of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala.

**[2:59]** Yes, all of his magnificent qualities, alayhi salatu wasalam, but the love that Allah has for the beloved salAllahu alayhi wasallam. And to love Allah, you must follow the messenger of Allah salAllahu alayhi wasallam. And love him. Wahibbu ahli bayti li hubbi

**[3:14]** And the Prophet salAllahu alayhi wasallam said, And love my family for my love. Even if there were no qualities that we learned about them, just to know how much the Prophet salAllahu alayhi wasallam loved them should be enough for us to love them as well. And this is a part of the sunnah of the Prophet salAllahu alayhi wasallam.

**[3:31]** A great sunnah is to love the family of the Prophet salAllahu alayhi wasallam as if they were to walk into the masjid and his eyes would immediately fall onto them. And the messenger of Allah salAllahu alayhi wasallam's eyes would glare when he saw his children, when he saw his grandchildren,

**[3:48]** and he would be completely captured by them as when we spoke about the life of al-Hasan radiAllahu ta'ala anhu before I left for Hajj. That's the good side of this. The bigger, broader narrative here is what happens when corruption takes over.

**[4:07]** The courageous shine and the cowards are exposed. Principles are rooted in something that is so foundational and so fundamental that no matter how difficult the storm becomes, the principles hold on to that foundation that is based upon la ilaha illallah.

**[4:26]** Others will shake and they will crumble. And may Allah protect us from crumbling under fitna. And the reality is that those who crumble under tribulation, the fitna of tribulation, have not properly conquered the fitna of comfort and desire before that.

**[4:43]** Have not properly conquered the fitna of desire before that. So I give you something because the life of al-Husayn radiAllahu anhu almost immediately plunges into a time of discord and fitna and tribulation. I give you this incident from the life of Sa'd ibn Abi Waqas radiAllahu ta'ala anhu,

**[5:00]** a companion, a great companion, one of the Ten Promised Paradise, and his son who happens to be named Umar, Umar ibn Sa'd. Sa'd ibn Abi Waqas radiAllahu ta'ala anhu, who fought alongside the Prophet salAllahu alayhi wasallam, one of the first believers,

**[5:15]** who was so engulfed with his love and his obedience to the Prophet salAllahu alayhi wasallam. When fitna broke out, Sa'd radiAllahu ta'ala anhu retired and he said, I want nothing to do with the fitna amongst the Muslims. This was a mindset that many of the companions have.

**[5:30]** You call me to fight amongst the enemies of Allah, the clear enemies of Allah, I'll be there. But once things start breaking out amongst the Muslims, I want nothing to do with it. Sa'd radiAllahu ta'ala anhu was one of those who wanted no piece of leadership. He didn't want to compete for a position.

**[5:46]** He looked for a position with Allah and His messenger salAllahu alayhi wasallam. And so he didn't compete for khilafah, he didn't compete for any type of position. That could compromise him. And his son Umar comes to him as he's kind of in the mountains, retired away from it all.

**[6:05]** And he looks at his son and he says, a'udhu billahi min sharri hadhal a't. Can you imagine? I seek refuge in Allah from the evil of the one who's approaching me. He's talking about his son. But his son comes and says, you know, my father,

**[6:20]** right now people are talking about leadership and who's going to take this position and that position and who's going to take this and that, you know, and you're Sa'd ibn Abi Waqas. You've got that position. You're one of Ashr Mubashireen, the 10 promised paradise. You're one of the Muhajireen, the Badreen, so many different titles that you have.

**[6:37]** Sa'd radiAllahu anhu recounts the position and the hadith of the Prophet salAllahu alayhi wasallam. Inna Allah yuhibbu al-abd, al-taqee al-ghanee al-khafee. Allah loves the slave, the servant who is pious,

**[6:52]** who is hidden and who is self-sufficient. I'm not going to get involved in any of that stuff. I'm happy where I am because this is what the Prophet salAllahu alayhi wasallam taught me to be. His son, you will see in the end of the story, takes a disastrous path of leadership at all costs, position at all costs.

**[7:10]** And so the spiritual poison that the Prophet salAllahu alayhi wasallam warns about comes to a disastrous end for a person at the end of their story. Likewise, when the Prophet salAllahu alayhi wasallam talks about tribalism and how tribalism is at the root of destruction for this ummah,

**[7:27]** and there are different manifestations of tribalism. Sometimes tribalism takes on a different color or a new flag, but tribalism is still at the root of it. And you start to see that when the people move away from Islam, that they retreat back into bani fulan wa bani fulan.

**[7:44]** This tribe and that tribe and this tribe, they get away from la ilaha illallah, Muhammadun Rasulullah, the brotherhood of Islam, which is supposed to transcend it all. And as a result, the ummah suffers. The ummah suffers. And how real is that reality for us today?

**[8:02]** And so we go into the life of al-Husayn radiAllahu ta'ala anhu. Typically when I would take a companion who's lesser known, then we try to extract some of the smaller, finer details because you find a paragraph or two about them. When you come to the life of al-Husayn radiAllahu ta'ala anhu,

**[8:19]** there's a long chapter. And the problem is, is that there's a lot of controversy. And my interest is not to cover al-Husayn radiAllahu ta'ala anhu controversially, but instead to celebrate the courage of al-Husayn radiAllahu ta'ala anhu, faithfully bi-idhnillahi ta'ala, in a way that we draw lessons,

**[8:35]** the way that we have been drawing from the luminaries that we have covered thus far. And so we come to his life, and Imam al-Dhahabi rahimahullah ta'ala, who always poetically and beautifully titles the chapter of a person. He covers al-Husayn radiAllahu ta'ala anhu,

**[8:51]** Al-Shaheed, Al-Imam Al-Sharif Al-Kamil, Sibt Rasulillahi salAllahu alayhi wasallam, Wa Rayhanatuhu Minad Dunya, Wa Mahboobuhu Abu Abdullah Al-Husayn Ibn Amir Al-Mu'mineen. He says al-Husayn radiAllahu ta'ala anhu,

**[9:06]** Al-Shaheed, the martyr. And that is the first title he gives him. And you know, SubhanAllah, I was reading something from the wife of al-Hajj Malik al-Shabazz, rahimahullah, Betty Shabazz, rahimahullah. And she said, of course, there's a lot of talk about Malcolm.

**[9:23]** She said that I found so much comfort when I saw that they started to call my husband al-Hajj Malik al-Shabazz after he passed away, Al-Shaheed, al-Hajj Malik al-Shabazz. And I thought about it as I was preparing this lecture, how al-Dhahabi puts that as the first title. In a time where there's so much honor for the shuhada,

**[9:39]** may Allah azza wa jal accept them all. Al-Shaheed is his first title, Al-Shaheed. Al-Imam Al-Sharif, the noble Imam, Al-Kamil, complete. Sibt Rasulillahi salAllahu alayhi wasallam, the extension, the grandson of the Prophet salAllahu alayhi wasallam,

**[9:56]** wa rayhanatuhu min al dunya, and his cherished one from this world and his beloved one, salAllahu alayhi wasallam. Abu Abdullah, so his kunya is Abu Abdullah, and he is of course the son of Amir al-Mu'minin, Ali ibn Abi Talib radiAllahu ta'ala anhu.

**[10:13]** So when was al-Husayn born? And I'm just going to say that one of the blessings of covering al-Hasan radiAllahu anhu first is that so many of the narrations about the virtues of al-Husayn radiAllahu anhu are found within the virtues of al-Hasan as well,

**[10:28]** because these were two kids who literally are bumping around each other and falling over each other in the masjid of the Prophet salAllahu alayhi wasallam and sitting in the lap of the Prophet salAllahu alayhi wasallam together. Why? Because they were extremely close in age, extremely close in age.

**[10:44]** So Husayn radiAllahu ta'ala anhu was born, according to most sources, in Sha'ban in the fourth year after hijrah, and he was less than a year younger than al-Hasan radiAllahu ta'ala anhu. In fact, al-Dhahabi rahimahullah and other books,

**[11:01]** they'll put the narration that Fatima radiAllahu ta'ala anha only had one cycle between al-Hasan and al-Husayn. So he's, I mean, she got pregnant with him immediately after giving birth to al-Hasan and al-Husayn radiAllahu ta'ala anhu was born.

**[11:17]** And as we know Ali radiAllahu ta'ala anhu wanted to name him what? You guys already forgot? I just went to Hajj and came back. Harb, war. So first Ali radiAllahu ta'ala anhu wanted to name Hasan Harb,

**[11:33]** and the Prophet salAllahu alayhi wasallam said, no, Harb means war. He named him Hasan instead, which was a unique name not found before. And then he came back, he had another son, Prophet salAllahu alayhi wasallam said, what did you name him? He said Harb. The Prophet salAllahu alayhi wasallam said, his name is Husayn, which is little Hasan,

**[11:49]** means excellence and beauty. And as I said, the name Husayn with a Saad, Husayn with a Saad was common to the Arabs. It was actually common. You can find multiple people that were named Husayn with a Saad. But Husayn with a Seen is not found.

**[12:06]** And so it's a unique, beautiful name. And he is connected to al-Hasan, may Allah be pleased with them both. And they are the two sweet flowers of the Prophet salAllahu alayhi wasallam. He would say, my two sweet basils in this world,

**[12:23]** meaning the Prophet salAllahu alayhi wasallam, you know, there's so much in the beautiful sharaf of that hadith alone. That when the Prophet salAllahu alayhi wasallam would hold those kids, what would he do? Like take it in, you know, like a beautiful flower. He would smell them salAllahu alayhi wasallam.

**[12:39]** And then he would kiss them salAllahu alayhi wasallam. And he would hold them extremely tight, but he loved their scent salAllahu alayhi wasallam. And you go back to the story of Ya'qub and Yusuf, may Allah send his peace and blessings upon his prophets.

**[12:55]** And Ya'qub with the scent of Yusuf, right? The Prophet salAllahu alayhi wasallam with the scent of those kids. He loved their scent salAllahu alayhi wasallam. And he said salAllahu alayhi wasallam that they are the leaders, the masters of the youth of paradise.

**[13:11]** Sayyida Shababi Ahlul Jannah. Abu Ayyub al-Ansari radiAllahu ta'ala anhu, because I didn't mention this narration in the biography of al-Hasan, I believe. He said that I entered upon the messenger of Allah salAllahu alayhi wasallam

**[13:26]** and al-Hasan and al-Husayn were jumping on his chest. So it's another narration beyond the ones that we already covered. And as they were jumping on his chest, salAllahu alayhi wasallam, you can imagine the grandfather, the Prophet salAllahu alayhi wasallam, both of them trying to knock the wind out of him and the Prophet salAllahu alayhi wasallam laughing

**[13:42]** and playing with them. Abu Ayyub radiAllahu anhu says, Ya Rasulullah, do you love them? And the Prophet salAllahu alayhi wasallam said, How can I not love them when they are my two sweet basils? They are Rayhanata in this world. So they are his two sweet basils,

**[13:57]** salAllahu alayhi wasallam, in this life. And they are the masters of the youth of paradise in the next. Now, I wanna go a little bit into this, the beauty of what this means. And we talked about some of the interpretations of Sayyidina Shababi ahl al-Jannah

**[14:13]** in the life of al-Hasan radiAllahu ta'ala anhu. Even though they're extremely similar, they also have different personalities. And anyone who's a parent or a grandparent will tell you that they love their kids in very different ways,

**[14:29]** that there's something about their kids. They love all their kids and they appreciate the time that they spend with them. But then there's something that Allah azza wa jal puts in their heart for each of those children. And so there's no doubt

**[14:44]** that as much as the ahadith gather, the Prophet salAllahu alayhi wasallam with these two beautiful ones, with him salAllahu alayhi wasallam, that he has a particular love, a particular spot for each of these children, salAllahu alayhi wasallam.

**[14:59]** And so... He is celebrating them in different occasions. And he is loving them in different occasions in different ways. And so you have the time where the Prophet salAllahu alayhi wasallam holds up al-Hasan radiAllahu anhu, the crying baby. And he says, inna ibni hadha sayyid. This young man of mine is a master. He's a leader.

**[15:19]** And it may be that Allah azza wa jal will bring together two great armies of believers through him. In another narration from Jabir radiAllahu ta'ala anhu, al-Husayn radiAllahu ta'ala anhu dakhala al-masjid. And he enters into the masjid and the Prophet salAllahu alayhi wasallam says,

**[15:34]** man ahabba an yanzura ila sayyidi shababi ahl al-jannah fal yanzura ila hadha. Whoever wants to see the master of the youth of paradise, look at this one. And so he praises them on different occasions. He plays with them on different occasions,

**[15:50]** but most of the narrations about them are, you know, from the Prophet salAllahu alayhi wasallam showing them love at the same time. If one of them was with him, he would praise them separately. And so one of the times the Prophet salAllahu alayhi wasallam was playing with al-Husayn radiAllahu ta'ala anhu. And he mentioned, man ahabba ni fal yuhibba Husayn. Whoever loves me,

**[16:10]** let them love al-Husayn. Like he's directing the community salAllahu alayhi wasallam that if you want to love me, you have to love my family as well. Man ahabba ni fal yuhibba Husayn. And whoever loves me, then let him love al-Husayn radiAllahu ta'ala anhu. And you can recall the narration

**[16:27]** where the Prophet salAllahu alayhi wasallam put the family under his cloak, which is the famous hadith of al-kisa. And he made du'a for them and he praised them salAllahu alayhi wasallam. And that was another form of moving them forward. I want to mention some unique narrations.

**[16:44]** Ja'far ibn Muhammad, he narrates from his father that the Prophet salAllahu alayhi wasallam was seated in the place where salat al-janazah is performed. And then al-Hasan came out and they started wrestling each other. You could tell that these were the two kids that just walked out to the

**[17:01]** masjid all the time and they're always the center of attention. So as al-Hasan and al-Husayn are wrestling each other because they're practically the same age, what does the Prophet salAllahu alayhi wasallam do? What do you think he does? Just to show you how different the Prophet salAllahu alayhi wasallam is from, you know, again what we would think the one who would sit with them salAllahu alayhi wasallam on the minbar

**[17:20]** and hold them while giving a khutbah. What do you think he does? Anybody want to guess? He says, Ihsan Hussam, go Hussam. So the Prophet salAllahu alayhi wasallam eggs him on. Ali radiAllahu ta'ala anhu says,

**[17:36]** Ya Rasulullah, O Messenger of Allah, are you preferring him to al-Hasan? Like do you want him to beat al-Hasan? And the Prophet salAllahu alayhi wasallam said, Hadha Jibreel yaqulu ihan Husayn. So Jibreel alayhi salam is saying, go Husayn. So he's like balancing it out, right? To show

**[17:53]** subhanAllah that these two were the objects of the adoration of the Prophet salAllahu alayhi wasallam and also those who love the Prophet salAllahu alayhi wasallam, even from the malaik. Like you can imagine the sitting and again, the playing with these two children. And as they grow up and they become

**[18:09]** their own unique men and their own unique personalities, Allah azza wa jal gives us a legacy through them both. Through al-Hasan radiAllahu ta'ala anhu, that legacy of wisdom and generosity and rectification, eloquence and leadership, right? Channeling one element of the

**[18:27]** Prophet salAllahu alayhi wasallam in that regard. A major part of the legacy of the Messenger of Allah salAllahu alayhi wasallam, a true leader in that regard. Through al-Husayn radiAllahu ta'ala anhu, a legacy of courage, fighting oppression, a sense of justice where he never lets anything go, radiAllahu ta'ala anhu.

**[18:45]** And that's one of the beautiful things about his characteristics. When it came to their looks, even the way Allah azza wa jal fashioned them, as we said, al-Hasan radiAllahu ta'ala anhu resembled the Prophet salAllahu alayhi wasallam in his lower body, al-Husayn radiAllahu anhu resembled him in his upper body.

**[19:01]** And that denotes the strength of al-Husayn radiAllahu anhu. Al-Husayn is a warrior. Al-Hasan radiAllahu ta'ala anhu, a statesman. And I found this beautiful narration as well, because again, I want to focus on some of the smaller things that often go missed.

**[19:17]** That al-Hasan once said to al-Husayn, this is narrated from Sa'id ibn Amr, he said that al-Hasan said to al-Husayn, wadittu anna li ba'da shiddati qalbik. Al-Hasan is saying to his brother al-Husayn, I wish I had some of that strength of your heart. You have a strong heart.

**[19:39]** Al-Husayn radiAllahu ta'ala anhu exemplifies that, manifests a strong heart. And al-Husayn radiAllahu ta'ala anhu responds to al-Hasan radiAllahu ta'ala anhu, wa anna wadittu anna li ba'da ma busita min lisanik. And I wish that I had some of ma busita min lisanik,

**[19:59]** some of what Allah gave to you of eloquence. I wish I had some of your speech. And al-Hasan is saying, I wish I had some of your strength. And may Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala send his peace and blessings upon the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) and his family. We wish we had any of these qualities.

**[20:16]** Right? We wish we had any of these qualities, but it's something to glean and something to admire and something to recognize that Allah chose them for different times and for different circumstances. And so perspective, when the Prophet (ﷺ) passed away, you're looking at a seven and a six-year-old.

**[20:38]** Right? You're looking at very little children that were with the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), but that truly took from the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ). And the Prophet (ﷺ) made du'a for them and directed the ummah towards them on multiple occasions. And in one narration, the Prophet (ﷺ)

**[21:00]** once entered into the house (ﷺ) and he saw that al-Husayn radiAllahu ta'ala anhu was crying. And the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said to Fatima radiAllahu ta'ala anha,

**[21:19]** don't you know that his crying hurts me? It hurts me when he cries (ﷺ). It hurts me when he cries. And that is something to truly think about, that if it hurt the Prophet (ﷺ)

**[21:35]** for his grandson to cry from some of what happens just in the life of a child, imagine how much it hurt the Prophet (ﷺ) to know that this grandson of his would be a martyr, would be killed in a cruel manner (ﷺ). Imagine the pain that this brought to the Messenger of

**[21:55]** Allah (ﷺ). Which brings us a few narrations. Allah, I was thinking about this. The heart of the man (ﷺ) who could receive the Qur'an when no other person could receive the Qur'an. The Prophet (ﷺ) received the Qur'an in his heart and the Qur'an would have flattened mountains.

**[22:14]** law anzalna hadhal Qur'ana ala jablin la raytahu khashian mutasadi'an min khashyatillah The Qur'an would flatten mountains. What the heart of the Prophet (ﷺ) was able to bear of the losses of his loved ones in his life and then the news of even those that would

**[22:33]** survive him (ﷺ) and the tragedies that would befall them. Like it's one thing to carry the pain of having buried six of your seven children. But the Prophet (ﷺ) was given the akhbar, he was given the news of what would happen after him. With the one child that he left behind him

**[22:56]** in this world (ﷺ), Fatima al-Zahra radiAllahu anha. Was the Prophet (ﷺ) given the news of her death? Yes he was and that brought him comfort. That brought him comfort. On his deathbed (ﷺ)

**[23:11]** when he called for Fatima al-Zahra radiAllahu ta'ala anha to his side and whispered something into her ear and she cried and then the Prophet (ﷺ) told her come back and he whispered something into her ear and then she laughed. And Fatima radiAllahu ta'ala anha told Aisha radiAllahu anha later on

**[23:29]** who insisted what was it that he said to you? The first time he told me that he was going to die (ﷺ) that he wasn't going to live past this. The second time he told me that I would be the first to join him (ﷺ) from his family. What is this? Right? Except for some sort

**[23:47]** of divine news that was given to him (ﷺ) through Jibreel (ﷺ) that Fatima was going to die radiAllahu anha despite being a young healthy woman right after his death (ﷺ) and would join him. On the other hand Umm Salama radiAllahu ta'ala anha she narrates this painful image of the Prophet (ﷺ)

**[24:09]** and it is that the Prophet (ﷺ) was playing with al-Husayn radiAllahu ta'ala anhu one day and I'm paraphrasing three narrations in this regard. And as al-Husayn radiAllahu ta'ala anhu was playing with the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) Jibreel (ﷺ) comes to the Prophet (ﷺ) and says to the Prophet (ﷺ)

**[24:30]** Do you love him? The Prophet (ﷺ) says of course and the angel says to him (ﷺ) that a group from your community will kill him. And the Prophet (ﷺ) says a group from my

**[24:45]** community like subhanAllah how outrageous is it to think a community that sees the Prophet (ﷺ)'s eyes and his heart immediately lend itself towards this young boy and that fitna would lead to a point where someone who claims to be Muslim would shed the blood of the grandson of the Prophet (ﷺ)

**[25:07]** of the beloved one of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ). How is that even possible? Right? But again the Prophet (ﷺ)'s life was full of surprises. Was it not that he was told (ﷺ) in the very beginning from Waraqah ibn Nawfal that your community will run you out, your people,

**[25:23]** your qawm will run you out. How? How is that possible? But time goes on and fitna happens and in the process of that fitna the unthinkable happens. And so the Prophet (ﷺ) is given the news of the martyrdom of al-Husayn (ﷺ) and he's asked would you like to see the place where he will be

**[25:43]** killed? And Jibreel (ﷺ) brings to the Prophet (ﷺ) some red soil. Now one of the narrations the Prophet (ﷺ) actually is able to grab it and smell it but some red soil and this was as Thabit

**[26:01]** (ﷺ) says we used to say that this was Karbala, this was the land that al-Husayn (ﷺ) would be massacred in. So imagine subhanAllah he's given something so close that this grandson that you were holding in your in your arms and that you love so much that one day this is the dirt

**[26:21]** that he will be martyred in and he will be buried in (ﷺ). May Allah (ﷺ) be pleased with him and send his peace and blessings upon the Prophet (ﷺ) and his family. Allahumma Ameen. In one narration the Prophet (ﷺ) is tossing and turning at night as he's being told the news,

**[26:38]** being given the news and the vision of what will happen to his grandson (ﷺ). And so the Prophet (ﷺ) has to live with the weight of what has happened in the past, the weight of the present and the weight of the future. And that is subhanAllah part of also what makes the smile

**[27:00]** of the Prophet (ﷺ) that much more inspirational. The optimism of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) that he was foretelling to the companions all the fitna that was going to happen to them. All of the tribulations that would come to him (ﷺ) or come to his ummah (ﷺ). Yet still the Prophet

**[27:18]** (ﷺ) was optimistic and moving forward. Which is a sign that not only should you not become pessimistic over the past but also do not doom yourself or doom the ummah with self-fulfilling prophecies. Oh here we go again we're going to lose. Here we go again this is going to happen.

**[27:36]** Here we go again it's going to be more killing, more murder. Here we go again, here we go again, here we go again. The Prophet (ﷺ) did not have weakness, fatigue in his moving forward even though he was being given the most crippling revelations (ﷺ) about that which was to come

**[27:54]** and the things that would truly cause him grief and cause him much pain (ﷺ). And so he knew he was given the revelation of al-Hasan being a leader that would bring together the ummah in a difficult time and he held up al-Hasan to celebrate. And then he was given the revelation

**[28:12]** that al-Husayn would be massacred, would be martyred in the most brutal of fashions and that grieved him (ﷺ) in that regard. So what happens when he passes away (ﷺ)? How did these two kids

**[28:27]** grow up? Obviously those that immediately lived with the Prophet (ﷺ) and that lived that jaww, lived that weather, that climate of Medina where these two kids would come in and the Prophet (ﷺ) would light up. Al-Hasan and al-Husayn held a very special place in the community of Medina.

**[28:49]** The companions honored them, the companions would show them love. To see them would make you cry, would make you recount the joy of the Prophet (ﷺ) when he was around them and also feel the pain of realizing that the Prophet (ﷺ) was no longer around to express that joy. And so there

**[29:07]** are so many narrations. One of the narrations from Abu Hurairah radiAllahu ta'ala anhu that I saw him, he was dusting the feet of al-Husayn after a janazah, radiAllahu ta'ala anhu, getting the dirt off of it. Like the companions looked at these two kids growing up amongst them and

**[29:23]** we know who they are, we know how special they are, we know what they meant to the Prophet (ﷺ). And there are multiple, subhanAllah, narrations of Umar radiAllahu ta'ala anhu and the love that Umar radiAllahu ta'ala anhu had for al-Hasan and al-Husayn in particular. That as he was allotting

**[29:39]** the cloth to the ummah, that he wasn't satisfied until he sent for Yemen and brought two cloths for al-Hasan and al-Husayn and he said now my soul is at ease. Or that Umar radiAllahu ta'ala anhu allotted a greater share, the inheritance that was allotted to their father, Ali radiAllahu

**[29:56]** ta'ala anhu, and constantly wanted to direct attention. So much so, as we get to the story of Abdullah ibn Umar, that Abdullah, the son of Umar, knew that al-Hasan and al-Husayn are different. That they are more beloved to my father than even his own children.

**[30:13]** Because the Prophet (ﷺ) is more beloved to the believing companions, to these men around the Prophet (ﷺ) than even themselves and their own families. And so under Abu Bakr radiAllahu ta'ala anhu, they are honored and they're growing up.

**[30:28]** Under Umar radiAllahu ta'ala anhu, they become teenagers and they grow up into fine young men. And they are beloved and they are honored. And under Uthman radiAllahu ta'ala anhu, al-Hasan and al-Husayn, may Allah be pleased with them, will rush to the side of Uthman radiAllahu ta'ala anhu,

**[30:46]** so he is not abandoned alongside Ali, alongside Talha, alongside al-Zubayr. That small group of people who gather around him when fitna is rising and when his assassination is all but inevitable.

**[31:02]** So they're learning from their father. They're waking up to the world in these times of fitna and learning from their father how to have that courage and that conviction in the midst of that fitna. And to rush to the one who is mazloom, to rush to the one who is being wronged and to support the one who is being wronged in that regard.

**[31:25]** After Ali radiAllahu ta'ala anhu becomes the khalifa, then al-Hasan radiAllahu ta'ala anhu moved to Kufa. So there is a geography component here that I want you to also keep in mind. There are tribes, there are clusters of companions, and there are geographies.

**[31:44]** Right? So the main geography that I want you to keep in mind is al-Haramayn, Mecca and Medina. There's a climate there. And then you have al-Sham, which is greater Syria.

**[31:59]** And then you have Iraq. Right? Primarily, the two Iraqs are Basra and Kufa. You have Iraq, you have Mecca and Medina, and you have al-Sham. You have greater Syria, where Islam is spreading deep into the territories of the Romans in that regard,

**[32:16]** and Iraq spreading deep into the territory of the Persians. Right? So Medina was obviously the headquarters of the khilafa under the first three khulafa. Ali radiAllahu ta'ala anhu moved to Iraq. Right?

**[32:31]** And in Iraq, his children al-Hasan and al-Husayn will go with him. Primarily, as the fitna breaks out, you have Bani Umayyah under Muawiyah radiAllahu anhu in al-Sham, and then you have Ali radiAllahu ta'ala anhu in Iraq.

**[32:46]** And these are the two geographies I want you to keep in mind. Right? So al-Hasan and al-Husayn, may Allah be pleased with them, will be alongside their father, Ali radiAllahu ta'ala anhu, and they will fight alongside him in the battles of al-Jamal and Siffin.

**[33:03]** Now after this all takes place, and there's one very important incident here that is cited in some of the books of, you know, Ali radiAllahu ta'ala anhu even somewhat being aware of the land in which al-Husayn radiAllahu ta'ala anhu will be murdered or martyred in Iraq.

**[33:24]** Ali radiAllahu ta'ala anhu is martyred in Iraq. He's martyred in Iraq. And when he is martyred in Iraq, we know that al-Hasan radiAllahu ta'ala anhu has a difficult decision to make.

**[33:39]** And initially, he establishes his leadership also from Iraq. Now, the important lens here of the people of Kufa, the people of Kufa in Iraq, is that Ali radiAllahu ta'ala anhu did not get what he had hoped for from Kufa.

**[33:57]** And he was killed from a man in Kufa. Al-Hasan radiAllahu ta'ala anhu, when he decided to reconcile the ummah and to come to terms with Muawiyah and to bring the ummah under one banner from al-Sham, then he almost was killed in Kufa as well.

**[34:16]** You can go back to the story of al-Hasan radiAllahu ta'ala anhu, where he is almost assassinated in Kufa, and there's a great level of turmoil and anger towards him that's in Kufa. So he goes back to Medina. Al-Hasan will go back to Medina.

**[34:32]** You understand the geography? So Ali, Hasan, Husayn in Iraq for some time, and then after al-Hasan completes khilafah rashida, what is the rightly guided caliphate, the period of the rightly guided khilafah, it comes under Muawiyah, so the khilafah transfers to al-Sham,

**[34:50]** Hasan and Husayn go back to Medina. Now as we said in the lecture about al-Hasan, al-Husayn radiAllahu ta'ala anhu was not initially happy about this arrangement, but he went with it, right?

**[35:07]** Because he trusted his older brother at the end of the day, he trusted his wisdom, he saw the conciliatory nature of what was being done, and the benefit of that. But it was a hurtful time because fitna had broke out in the ummah, and to try to move past that is not an easy task,

**[35:24]** especially for al-Husayn radiAllahu ta'ala anhu with all that he witnessed, right? In that regard. But at the end of the day, he saw that prophecy come to reality, and al-Hasan radiAllahu ta'ala anhu, it's not like he just sat there and he was bitter about everything,

**[35:41]** al-Hasan radiAllahu anhu participates in the battles, right? He actually goes out in some of the battles against the Romans, he actually fights in the army that went forth towards Constantinople that the Prophet (ﷺ) praised, and that was under the khilafah of Muawiyah,

**[35:56]** so it shows you like he puts his head down, he's a soldier, he still channels his courage, and truly the ummah grows and the ummah shines during this time. But as time goes on, al-Hasan radiAllahu ta'ala anhu dies.

**[36:14]** So to give you a little bit of a timeline, Ali radiAllahu ta'ala anhu dies in the year 40 after hijrah in Ramadan. He's assassinated in the year 40 after hijrah in Ramadan. Al-Hasan radiAllahu ta'ala anhu,

**[36:29]** his khilafah lasted for six months, for six months. And so in the year 41 after hijrah, al-Hasan radiAllahu ta'ala anhu abdicates the khilafah. Al-Hasan will then become sick and die in the year 49 to 50.

**[36:49]** Okay, 49 to 50. So you're talking about a decade, almost a decade of peace and prosperity within the ummah, right? Things are moving forward. It is absolutely and obviously not ideal,

**[37:04]** but I'm talking about in terms of expansion, in terms of extension, in terms of fighting the enemies of Allah. There is a lot that's happening here within this time. When al-Hasan radiAllahu ta'ala anhu dies, Kufa in Iraq calls back al-Husayn radiAllahu ta'ala anhu.

**[37:21]** And they tell al-Husayn to come back to Kufa, and that they will give him bay'ah, and that they will pledge their allegiance to him the way that they were ready to pledge their allegiance to Hasan, and to continue forward with al-Hasan. Al-Husayn continues forward in Medina,

**[37:38]** and he initially refuses that, right? Because Muawiyah is still alive, and that khilafah is still intact. And so the agreement between al-Hasan and Muawiyah still stands. So he says, no, I'm going to honor that, and I'm going to uphold that. And he remains in Medina al-Munawwara,

**[37:53]** which shows you again the desire of these noble people to make sure that the most noble of aims remain at the top. Right? He could have at that time made a claim, and said, all right, now al-Hasan is dead.

**[38:08]** And again, the likelihood is that he's been poisoned. Now it's my turn to rise up. But he recognizes the circumstances, and he says, I'm not going to rock this boat. And he maintains his posture, and he maintains his contribution,

**[38:23]** radiAllahu ta'ala anhu, in the way that Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala had created him to uniquely benefit and contribute to this ummah. Now that doesn't mean that there aren't some disputes, right? And things that happen in the process.

**[38:39]** But I'll actually share, subhanAllah, the governor of Medina at the time, so this is under Muawiyah, the governor of Medina is named al-Walid ibn Utbah. The governor of Medina has a dispute that involves al-Husayn radiAllahu ta'ala anhu,

**[38:54]** a property dispute. And there was still some hostility towards the family of the Prophet salAllahu alayhi wasallam that was arising from those quarters. And al-Husayn radiAllahu ta'ala anhu, he invokes hilf al-fudul. Hilf al-fudul was the coalition, the pact of justice,

**[39:12]** that the Prophet salAllahu alayhi wasallam invoked, li nusrat al-madhloom, for the benefit of the one who was being wronged from the lesser tribe, right? Or of course, someone that is an outsider was wronged and the Prophet salAllahu alayhi wasallam participated in hilf al-fudul in a pact before Islam

**[39:29]** that he said salAllahu alayhi wasallam he would uphold after Islam, where we support the one who is being oppressed no matter what. We support the one who is being transgressed against no matter what. So al-Husayn radiAllahu ta'ala anhu actually invokes that, right?

**[39:44]** And starts to bring the tribes once again together to insist upon nusrat al-madhloom. And that's an important detail here because it shows you that al-Husayn radiAllahu ta'ala anhu is not someone who tolerates injustice in his ranks.

**[40:00]** He's not someone that likes to see injustice and he's not someone that's going to be silent when he sees these injustices. And so it's a property dispute with the governor of Medina, but still there's a principle here that has to be upheld that just because you belong to the ruling party, right?

**[40:15]** Or that your tribe is in power doesn't mean that you get to get away with that type of stuff. And so he invokes it radiAllahu ta'ala anhu and he upholds justice in that regard. So what happens after the death of al-Hasan,

**[40:32]** still the khilafah of Muawiyah, al-Husayn radiAllahu ta'ala anhu is in Medina. He's participating in the expeditions of the Muslims. He is still holding the noble and lofty position that he held, but he's in Medina.

**[40:47]** Muawiyah decides to unite the people in al-Sham. And I was thinking about this when you look at it geographically, like you don't have a digital world or the speed of communication, right? So al-Sham is becoming its own thing, right?

**[41:04]** At that time, Muawiyah wants to give the khilafah to his son Yazid. Yazid is not a companion of the Prophet salAllahu alayhi wasallam. And this is not the process by which the khilafah was to be passed on, right?

**[41:23]** There is not shura here. Yazid is not the best of them, nor is this the best process. But Muawiyah wants to unite people around his son Yazid. And he starts to make that intention clear before he actually passes away.

**[41:39]** And there is resistance to this idea, right? To even secure a pre-bay'ah to his son before he passes away. There's a lot of resistance to this idea. Abdullah ibn Zubayr resists this idea. Abdullah ibn Umar resists this idea. Abdullah ibn Abbas resists this idea. Al-Husayn resists this idea.

**[41:55]** This is not something that's going over well with the companions of the Prophet salAllahu alayhi wasallam because again, he's not the best person. He's not the best person. And this isn't the process, right? If this is a process and this is how it's going to be, otherwise you're going to end up with dynasty and kingship

**[42:11]** and the hereditary passing on of position to position, which is not the way that the Prophet salAllahu alayhi wasallam had left behind or the best way that the Prophet salAllahu alayhi wasallam had left behind in that regard. But this is what he goes forth and he does.

**[42:28]** And Muawiyah passes away, radiAllahu anhu, 60 years after hijrah in Rajab. So this is the year 680, 60 years. Now at that point, the khalifa has been appointed by the outgoing khalifa.

**[42:46]** So whether you hated the process or not, many of those who objected are saying, even though we objected to the process, we don't like the way that it was done, for the sake of continuity, for the sake of stability, for the sake of keeping things going, we'll give our bay'ah and we'll move on. We're not happy with it, but at the end of the day,

**[43:03]** we'll give our bay'ah and we move on. And this is where the companions themselves are going to have differences amongst themselves. We don't accuse their intentions. In fact, we see their intentions, especially the ones that I'm going to talk about here, as coming from the right place, right?

**[43:19]** That they're trying to decide how to make the best of a bad situation. Clearly a mistake has been made, but at the end of the day, the Muslims, from a political perspective, are moving in the right direction. They're as stronger as they've ever been.

**[43:34]** And we don't want to fracture, and we still have some of the trauma of the fitna that happened from the time of the assassination of Uthman, radiAllahu ta'ala anhu, and then what then went on to the assassination of Ali, radiAllahu ta'ala anhu, and everything that followed, the fitna that the ummah was embroiled in.

**[43:50]** We don't want to go back to that. So they have a decision to make amongst themselves, and for most people, continuity with disagreement. Right? For most people, this was the approach to take.

**[44:06]** Now, Marwan ibn al-Hakam, and unfortunately because of time, I'm not going to, each one of these names that come up, honestly there's a whole side biography that's relevant, but I just want you to have a complete story, inshaAllah ta'ala, by the time Salat al-Isha comes,

**[44:22]** where you can at least put it all together, inshaAllah ta'ala. Marwan ibn al-Hakam, if you go back to when al-Hasan radiAllahu ta'ala anhu died, Marwan was not someone that was on good terms with the family of the Prophet salAllahu alayhi wasallam, and he's a character that has many problems,

**[44:39]** to say the least in this regard. Right? But Marwan ibn al-Hakam understands the politics of the situation, so he tells al-Walid ibn Utbah, he says, what you need to do is solidify the bay'ah in Medina now,

**[44:54]** because the news has come from al-Sham about the appointment of Yazid ibn Muawiyah, you need to get the pledge, al-Husayn and Abdullah ibn al-Zubayr. Like these are the two that are gonna give you a problem, so get them privately to give bay'ah, right, to agree to the situation, and then we can move forward.

**[45:14]** To paraphrase this all, al-Walid ibn Utbah, he brings Abdullah ibn al-Zubayr, and ibn al-Zubayr objects, gets into a whole, you know, debate, and Marwan ibn al-Hakam is present, and at the end of it,

**[45:30]** ibn al-Zubayr kind of gives the indication, like, let me think about it, but he's not happy about it, and he hasn't given a clear answer of yes. Al-Husayn radiAllahu ta'ala anhu, non-committal, clearly not thrilled about the idea and what has happened, and understands the implications of saying no, outright saying no,

**[45:50]** that the shrewd politics would basically mean that he will be killed in that moment. So it's the evening, the understanding is that al-Husayn will get back to them in the morning. Both ibn al-Zubayr and al-Husayn fled Medina to Mecca without giving bay'ah to Yazid ibn Muawiyah.

**[46:09]** So they both made their intentions clear in that regard, because they were not going to sign on to that particular tyranny, and this is where you're going to start to see those geographies come back into play. Mecca still has a large cluster of the companions of the Prophet (ﷺ),

**[46:30]** and is still obviously a center for what it is, right? There's a lot more stability and sanctity that's assigned to Mecca that you're not going to find in other places. And subhanAllah, the fitna that this ummah will face is that in the years to come,

**[46:46]** under the rule of Yazid ibn Muawiyah, there will be tyranny on Medina, tyranny on Mecca, and tyranny with the family of the Prophet (ﷺ). Right? So Waq'at al-Harrah, which we talked about in the seerah, especially of Anas ibn Malik radiAllahu ta'ala anhu, where over a hundred of his descendants were killed,

**[47:02]** where he reigned tyranny on Medina. The attack on the Ka'bah and the attack on the grandson of the Prophet (ﷺ) are all going to happen within the next few years. But in Mecca, there is a center, right? And a huge cluster of companions of the Prophet (ﷺ).

**[47:19]** Medina has who it has. And so al-Husayn and ibn Zubayr will both find their way to Mecca. A lot of details being left out in between. In that process, al-Husayn is given messages

**[47:37]** or he starts to receive letters from Iraq again, from Kufa in Iraq. And the message is that we're ready for you this time. Come back to us. We will support you and we're ready to appoint you as our leader.

**[47:52]** And so Iraq is ready for you. Particularly Kufa is ready for you. Kufa is where al-Husayn spent many of his years, fought alongside his father Ali. May Allah be pleased with him. And Ali radiAllahu anhu of course was martyred in Kufa. Al-Hasan radiAllahu ta'ala anhu initially his leadership was in Kufa.

**[48:10]** And so it's compelling to start to receive these messages that come here and establish your base and we will follow you. And then it's not one or two letters. Al-Husayn starts to receive hundreds of letters. In fact, two bagfuls of letters of pledges from the people of Kufa.

**[48:31]** Come to Iraq, come to Kufa. And you will find us ready to enthusiastically support you and to be with you. Now al-Husayn radiAllahu ta'ala anhu does the responsible thing. He sends his cousin out to check out the situation.

**[48:48]** Like go see if they're serious or not. His cousin is a man by the name of Muslim ibn Aqeel radiAllahu ta'ala anhu. Muslim ibn Aqeel. Now if you're looking at the children of Ali, I'm sorry, the children of Abu Talib, you have Talib, Aqeel, Ja'far, Ali.

**[49:06]** Talib, Aqeel, Ja'far, Ali. Aqeel is the second child of Abu Talib. So he's the brother of Ali. And his son, Muslim, is the first cousin therefore of al-Husayn. You all understand the way that that would work? I just want to make sure.

**[49:22]** And Muslim ibn Aqeel is a righteous man, a trustworthy companion of al-Husayn radiAllahu ta'ala anhu. So al-Husayn sends Muslim ibn Aqeel radiAllahu anhu to go and to analyze and assess the situation of Kufa. See if they are serious.

**[49:38]** And if they are actually ready to support me, right? Because they have a history in Kufa and it's not a pretty history of betrayal and of being let down, of disappointment. In any case, Muslim ibn Aqeel, when he gets to the city, 12,000 people come out to enthusiastically receive him.

**[49:58]** And they are pleading for al-Husayn radiAllahu ta'ala anhu to come to Iraq and to establish his base there, to establish his leadership there. We will support him. Right? And they are making it seem like they are leaderless, like they are not willing to operate within the existing structure unless al-Husayn radiAllahu ta'ala anhu comes and they will give bay'ah to him to the extent that we will not even establish Jumu'ah without you.

**[50:27]** You're our leader. We want you to come. You are the right, you are the rightfully guided leader. You are the right one to be in charge. Come establish your base here. You know Kufa. Kufa loves you and you will find your people to be here for you.

**[50:42]** So al-Husayn radiAllahu ta'ala anhu starts to make the decision to go to Kufa in Iraq and to establish himself there. Abdullah ibn Zubayr will establish himself in Mecca. He'll establish his leadership in Mecca. When we get to the life of Abdullah ibn Zubayr, you'll see how serious that entity actually became.

**[51:02]** Right? So there's going to be a whole governance structure in Mecca and there's obviously would exist in al-Sham and now al-Husayn is going to go to Iraq or he's thinking to go to Iraq and to establish leadership there.

**[51:19]** This is where you start to see some of the most painful discussions of people with al-Husayn begging him not to go. So at the top of them, you have Abdullah ibn Abbas. Abdullah ibn Abbas radiAllahu ta'ala anhuma.

**[51:36]** And he is, of course, the senior cousin of al-Husayn. Abdullah ibn Abbas is Habr al-Qur'an. He's the scholar of the Qur'an. He's someone who is extremely loyal, eloquent, beautiful, powerful, profound, wise. I mean, all of the things that the Prophet (ﷺ) praised about him of his knowledge and intellect and his wisdom.

**[51:56]** Ibn Abbas radiAllahu ta'ala anhuma, who's older at this point. He's no longer a young man anymore. Comes to al-Husayn and he begs him. He says, I remember what they did to your father. And he said, I don't want them to do to you what they did to your father or what they did to your brother.

**[52:15]** And he said, I fear that you will be killed tomorrow among your women and your daughters the way that Uthman radiAllahu ta'ala anhu was killed. I don't want the same fate for you. And he even said that if the people wouldn't belittle me, if I could, I would grab you even by the hair, right?

**[52:32]** Just to hold you back because I don't want you to go forth. I don't want you to go and end up in the situation where you're going to be murdered and hurt the way that your father was hurt. Husayn radiAllahu ta'ala anhu insisted that he would go forward.

**[52:51]** Abu Sa'id al-Khudri radiAllahu ta'ala anhu also advised him and begged him not to go. And he said, I heard your father Abu Sa'id al-Khudri radiAllahu anhu was close to Ali radiAllahu anhu. He said, I heard your father speaking about Kufa and saying, Wallahi, I found myself to be suspicious of them and them to be suspicious of me.

**[53:10]** And I felt no loyalty and patience or steadfastness amongst them. Don't go, don't do it. Jabir ibn Abdullah radiAllahu ta'ala anhu pleading with him. Abdullah ibn Ja'far, his first cousin also radiAllahu anhu pleading with him.

**[53:26]** Abdullah ibn Umar radiAllahu ta'ala anhu who begged him not to go. And subhanAllah as he pleads with him not to go forward and not to end up in that fate of being killed. As he saw that al-Husayn radiAllahu ta'ala anhu was insistent upon going.

**[53:46]** He hugged him and he said, Astawdiakallaha min qateer. Like I bid you farewell, but he understands that he's going to be from the slain. He understands that he's going to be from the killed. SubhanAllah one of the narrations is of Umm Salama radiAllahu ta'ala anha.

**[54:05]** Al-Husayn spent a few months in Mecca. So it wasn't overnight. Like he wasn't, you know, haste with this. He was deliberate with it. He sent Muslim ibn Aqeel to study Iraq. The message came back that Iraq was fertile, that it was ready for him. And that's when he's starting to make that conscious decision to move forward.

**[54:24]** Umm Salama radiAllahu ta'ala anha, they said, wallahi ma kunna na'rifu sawta Umm Salama illa yawma ra'aynaha tabki 'ala al-Husayn. We didn't know the voice of Umm Salama radiAllahu anha except for the day that we heard her weeping over al-Husayn. And that is that when Husayn was making tawaf, she started to cry.

**[54:44]** And they told him that she's crying over you. So he went to her and he says, maladhi yubqiqi ya umma? What is it that makes you cry? Oh, my mother, because the wives of the Prophet (ﷺ) are the mothers of the believers. So it's an affectionate way. What is it making that's making you cry?

**[55:00]** And he and she responded and she said that I'm weeping because I remember Fatima radiAllahu anha, your mother, when she was holding you tight. Wa kana tahinnu 'alayk. Right? The way that she felt that compassion and love for you while you were young.

**[55:18]** And he and she says to him that I swear by Allah that if she was still alive, that she would not allow you to move forward and to find yourself in the situation in Kufa where you're going to be killed or going to be harmed alongside your family.

**[55:37]** And so there is a plea that is being given from the Sahaba and there is an instinct that al-Husayn has that things are actually set in Iraq. He is not moving upon a false premise, at least as far as he's concerned, because he's getting the positive reports that are there.

**[55:54]** He's showing the bags of letters of support to the companions that are begging him. And there are those who are telling him, in fact, that he should go forth like, you know, Abdullah ibn Zubayr, right? Who's taking up a position of opposition to Yazid ibn Muawiyah's khilafah and who's telling him to go to Iraq and also take up a position of opposition to Yazid ibn Muawiyah.

**[56:17]** So it's not like they're all telling him to stay. There are those that are telling him to go forth as well. At the end of the day, he feels like his support is real, that the excitement is real, and he starts to make his way towards Iraq and he leaves Mecca in Sha'ban.

**[56:37]** He makes his way towards Iraq. Now when Muslim ibn Aqeel arrived in Kufa in Iraq, the governor was actually a companion named al-Nu'man ibn Bashir, a noble companion.

**[56:52]** And al-Nu'man ibn Bashir is not going to oppose what is coming from the family of the Prophet (ﷺ) or coming from al-Husayn radiAllahu ta'ala anhu. So he knows what is happening, but he's permissive with it because it's al-Husayn, right?

**[57:08]** Who is garnering support at the end of the day. And when the khalifa, when Yazid ibn Muawiyah finds out about this, he decides to send the governor of Basra, whose name is Ubaydullah ibn Ziyad, to take over the position of the governor of Kufa as well.

**[57:29]** To basically replace al-Nu'man ibn Bashir as the governor of Kufa and to shut down the rebellion. So the word starts getting out that the people in Kufa are gathering together and they are ready to receive al-Husayn radiAllahu ta'ala anhu to be their leader.

**[57:45]** And subhanAllah, one of the beautiful things that al-Husayn says to those that were pleading with him to stay in Mecca. Because one of the opinions was stay in Mecca and establish yourself here. Al-Husayn radiAllahu ta'ala anhu said that I'd rather be martyred, my blood be shed outside of Mecca than open up the haram to become a place of bloodshed.

**[58:07]** Like if this is going to play out in the way that so many are seeing it play out, where I'm going to be martyred and killed and my blood is going to be shed. I don't want that to happen in Mecca. I don't want that to happen in the haram. And subhanAllah, you can see his premonition was right that the tyrants would not respect the sanctity of Mecca.

**[58:28]** And Mecca would be a place where blood would be shed as well. Ibn Zubayr's blood would be shed as well. Because I don't want that to happen in Mecca. So I'd rather go out and face that fate elsewhere. So he's making his way to Kufa.

**[58:43]** Ubaydullah ibn Ziyad, who is he? Ubaydullah ibn Ziyad was a ruthless governor. And he's someone, because you know subhanAllah, when they say like ruthlessness or a tough ruler is a double-edged sword. Like there's a, it's like when you talk about Hajjaj and like people are like al-Hajjaj had these contributions because he had an iron fist.

**[59:02]** He didn't tolerate dissent. Right? So you'll find Ubaydullah ibn Ziyad was ruthless against the Khawarij, which was a good thing. Right? He was ruthless against the Khawarij and shut down their revolt. But now that same ruthlessness was going to be used against the family of the Prophet (ﷺ).

**[59:21]** So Ubaydullah ibn Ziyad makes his way from Basra towards Kufa. While al-Husayn has already departed Mecca towards Kufa. So you all can kind of see where this is going to go. The speed of communication is a factor here.

**[59:37]** Al-Husayn is proceeding on the idea that he's going to find the base of support that he has been promised in Kufa and Iraq. Ubaydullah ibn Ziyad is moving from Basra to Kufa. The tragedy or of the tragedies is that when Ubaydullah ibn Ziyad marched into Kufa that he came in with such a posture and he was

**[59:59]** wrapped in a black turban that the people thought he was al-Husayn. So he was welcomed in the streets and Marhaban bi ibn Rasulillah salAllahu alayhi wasallam Welcome to the son of the Messenger of Allah. And then people quickly realized this isn't the guy.

**[1:00:16]** And Ubaydullah made it very clear that he was in town to shut down whatever was happening with Muslim ibn Aqeel. What Muslim ibn Aqeel is going to face is that suddenly those enthusiastic supporters will shrink.

**[1:00:33]** So 12,000 becomes 7,000. 7,000 becomes 5,000. 5,000 becomes 1,000. Then you're in the few hundreds. Then you're in the tens. But there's a process here of intimidation and bribery and persecution of trying to find him,

**[1:00:51]** to find Muslim ibn Aqeel and to shut down the makings of that revolt that clearly Muslim ibn Aqeel realizes that once again Kufa is a place that disappointed, that betrayed, that let him down. So he finds himself with just a few followers in this regard.

**[1:01:13]** And he was hiding in the house of al-Hurr ibn Urwah and Ubaydullah ibn Ziyad basically through punishment brings out al-Hurr, beats him up, makes an example out of him. And you find Muslim ibn Aqeel suddenly on the run after a big army

**[1:01:33]** that has now turned into a tiny skirmish that now leads him to being alone to a point that there's a narration about him going to an old woman's house like a beggar, just looking for food and looking for safety and refuge and begging her to not turn him in. And then the son of that woman would be the one that would eventually turn him in.

**[1:01:49]** So Muslim ibn Aqeel finds himself betrayed alone. And when he recognizes that he is about to be killed, his concern then turns wholly towards stopping al-Husayn from coming to Kufa. Because al-Husayn is expecting to show up and find tens of thousands of people ready to support him.

**[1:02:08]** But instead al-Husayn is going to come and find that his death has been plotted or his capture has been plotted and that he's not going to find any enthusiastic support whatsoever in this regard.

**[1:02:24]** And it was on the day of Arafah, the day of Arafah in the year 60 after hijrah, that Muslim ibn Aqeel was apprehended by Ubaydullah ibn Ziyad and he was killed publicly. But he managed to send a messenger, a letter out to al-Husayn before that,

**[1:02:42]** to let him know what the circumstances of Kufa were going to be. While this is happening, al-Husayn radiAllahu ta'ala anhu has dispatched a messenger as well. That messenger is not coming back. He's taking along the armies getting nervous.

**[1:02:59]** Those that came out with al-Husayn, many of them, the relatives of the Prophet (ﷺ), the cousins of al-Husayn, the children of Ja'far, the children of Aqeel, many of them women and children. There's a nervousness that starts to arise amongst them that things are maybe not what they seem in Iraq.

**[1:03:18]** So he dispatches another one, another messenger. And he gets the news when he's already about to arrive in Iraq about what has happened. There's an interesting conversation that takes place between him and a man by the name of Farazdaq.

**[1:03:37]** And he asks Farazdaq about Iraq and what's happening in Iraq. And he says, qulubuhum ma'ak wa suyufuhum ma'a Yazid. Look, their hearts are with you, but their swords are with Yazid. So you're not going to find the political support that you're looking for.

**[1:03:56]** The best thing that you should do is to turn around and to go back, right, to Mecca before things get out of hand. Al-Husayn radiAllahu ta'ala anhu updates those that have come with him.

**[1:04:13]** And he offers to those that are with him that whoever wants to leave can leave. There's no blame on them. Whoever wants to turn around and to head back towards Mecca can head back and there's no blame on them. And subhanAllah amongst those that stood up first were the children of Muslim ibn Aqeel who wanted revenge, right?

**[1:04:34]** That was their father. That was their brother. That was their relative. And they said, no, we're not going to leave until we take that revenge, until we stand with you and we take justice for Muslim ibn Aqeel. And you end up with a group of people that are willing to march with al-Husayn radiAllahu ta'ala anhu, but they're less than a hundred.

**[1:04:56]** And only 73 of them are men that are able to fight. So al-Husayn radiAllahu anhu keeps marching forward. Ubaydullah ibn Ziyad, he is given the order from Yazid ibn Muawiyah, from the khalifa to basically take care of al-Husayn.

**[1:05:18]** It's ambiguous enough to where those that want to say that he didn't intend to kill him can make the claim that there wasn't intention to kill him. And it's specific enough to say that it's obvious what he means by do something about al-Husayn. Right? By the way, if you read like the Edgar Hoover memo on Malcolm X, do something about Malcolm X.

**[1:05:36]** It's very obvious what it means when you say do something about Malcolm X. Right? So Ubaydullah ibn Ziyad, he sends a thousand soldiers to basically go confront al-Husayn on the outskirts. And the head of that group of 1000 is a man by the name of al-Hurr ibn Yazid.

**[1:05:53]** Not ibn Yazid Muawiyah, just his name is al-Hurr ibn Yazid. And he comes to al-Husayn and he says to al-Husayn radiAllahu ta'ala anhu, please do not test me, O son of the messenger of Allah (ﷺ) with having a fight. And he basically is telling him do not bring the fight towards Kufa.

**[1:06:12]** Just go forth and turn around and go back because we don't want this to be the situation that it could turn into. Right? That there is a ruthless man basically that sent me and that if it has to play out,

**[1:06:27]** that you and all of these family members of the Prophet (ﷺ) and all these people that came with you are going to be killed. SubhanAllah, the irony of this and al-Husayn radiAllahu ta'ala anhu being who he is and being recognizable even to those that aren't sahaba, that didn't see the love of the Prophet (ﷺ) for him.

**[1:06:44]** They see the situation with him and they know who he is, that this negotiation process would take place for three days. And what do you think would happen when the time of salah would come? Shows you cognitive dissonance. Everyone prayed behind them.

**[1:07:00]** Right? So the entire army of a thousand men, they prayed behind them when the time of salah came. But at the same time, they're acting upon orders to detain, to stop, to kill whatever that may be.

**[1:07:16]** Then Ubaydullah ibn Ziyad sends another 4,000 men. And this is now on the third of Muharram. And the army that they're coming under is under guess who? Umar ibn Sa'd.

**[1:07:31]** Umar ibn Sa'd ibn Abi Waqas. Remember Sa'd warned him and said leadership is poison. Leadership is going to doom you. Your love for power is going to ruin you. Umar ibn Sa'd, when he was given the order, he knows who Husayn is.

**[1:07:49]** He's from that same umbrella. And his father avoided it for the sake of Allah (ﷻ). When Ubaydullah ibn Ziyad tells him to go forth and to contain al-Husayn radiAllahu ta'ala anhu, initially he doesn't want to do it. But if you don't do it, you'll lose your position.

**[1:08:07]** You'll be expelled and you could face consequences. You see, subhanAllah, how the fitna can strike you where you didn't make the right decision in the first place. And now you're exhumed by the initial bad decision that you made.

**[1:08:22]** So Umar ibn Sa'd ibn Abi Waqas leads the rest of the army, 4,000 men, and they are to intercept al-Husayn and his army radiAllahu ta'ala anhu, and they are to stop him from coming towards Karbala.

**[1:08:38]** Now the initial strategy was to deprive them of water and to deprive them of food, to cut them off to where it would become unbearable for them. But al-Husayn radiAllahu ta'ala anhu marches forward. SubhanAllah, we're already at the end of time, so I'm going to, I will do my best inshaAllah ta'ala.

**[1:08:55]** At the second of Muharram, they arrive at this land. Husayn radiAllahu ta'ala anhu gets to this land. And he says, what is the name of this place? And they said Karbala.

**[1:09:11]** And he said, subhanAllah, Karbun wabala. Like even the name Karb is distress and bala is affliction and test. He said Karbun wabala. Like even the name of the land suggests what comes from this place.

**[1:09:28]** And remember this was the place that the Prophet salAllahu alayhi wasallam was given. The prophecy of the murder of al-Husayn radiAllahu ta'ala anhu, the redness of its soil, the difficulty of it. And so he is anticipating as time is going on, what is going to happen.

**[1:09:44]** Ubaydullah ibn Ziyad has directed 4,000. So now it's a total of 5,000 soldiers against 73 soldiers. So Umar ibn Sa'd goes forth towards al-Husayn and asks him,

**[1:09:59]** what brings you here and what is it that you want? So al-Husayn radiAllahu ta'ala anhu, he's like, I'm not going to lie to you. He said, I have these bags of letters of the people of Kufa that have asked me to come and to lead them. So it's not like I came here on my own rendition, right?

**[1:10:15]** This was a request that came from the people of Iraq for me to come and to lead. And that's why I have come. And he said, and since they're no longer supporting me, right? Or in support of what they have written me,

**[1:10:30]** then I no longer have any need for them. And so here is the negotiation, right? Al-Husayn radiAllahu ta'ala anhu, Umar is asking him, Umar ibn Sa'd, what do you want me to go back to Ubaydullah ibn Ziyad, the tyrant?

**[1:10:46]** The tyrant serving a tyrant, right? What do you want me to go back to him? He said, you can give him three options. Either let me go back to where I came from, meaning I'll turn around. We'll go back towards Mecca. Or two, let me go to al-Sham to meet Yazid ibn Muawiyah directly.

**[1:11:03]** I'm not going to meet his crony, right? The guy under him. I'll go to Yazid ibn Muawiyah and I'll work it out directly with him. I'll talk to him directly. Or three, let me go to a remote place, right? With the Muslims and be amongst the people.

**[1:11:19]** So those are three things. Ubaydullah ibn Ziyad gave the order. He has to come here and to give allegiance to Yazid ibn Muawiyah with me. You see like the crony that you appoint and you give a little bit too much of a big head and inflated sense of presence and power.

**[1:11:36]** He has to come here to my palace and give the allegiance through me. And so Ubaydullah ibn Ziyad, as he is receiving this in his palace, the word from Umar ibn Sa'd ibn Abi Waqas about what happened.

**[1:11:54]** There's a man by the name of Shimr ibn Dhul-Jawshan. Shimr ibn Dhul-Jawshan. And Shimr, he's a punk. I mean, to put it lightly, right? I mean, like he's someone who is egging on the worst case scenario.

**[1:12:10]** And he's saying, no, you have to have him come here. He has to surrender to you. Don't let him buckle, you know, cause you to buckle on his terms. Husayn radiAllahu anhu is being very reasonable. Don't let him cause you to buckle. You have to kiss the ring, bend the knee, kiss the ring.

**[1:12:26]** You have to do what you've been told and come here and surrender in the palace. SubhanAllah, think about the status of Husayn radiAllahu anhu and the position that he holds. Who rightfully, when Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-As saw him, he said, do you want to see the most beloved of Allah's creation on earth right now?

**[1:12:42]** Look at this man and then look at this little, you know, these little human beings that claim to be Muslims. Which shows you an era of fitna. It's not just the enemies that become prominent. It's also the hypocrites that get exposed. He says, no, he's got to come here and he has to do what he's been told to do.

**[1:13:01]** So basically arrest him, detain him and bring him to me. Husayn radiAllahu anhu, the news comes back to him and he's told that you have to go back in chains, you know, and you have to kiss the ring of the tyrants and you have to surrender.

**[1:13:18]** Husayn radiAllahu anhu says, I'm not doing that. Absolutely not. Now he says to the people in his camp, once again, that none of you is obligated to stay here. And everyone says at that point, these people that are with him, including his family, that we will stay with you.

**[1:13:35]** We're not turning our backs on you. So he's been betrayed by the people that were supposed to take him in, but not by those noble people that came with him. Radiallahu anhu. And so he goes forth. He has amongst him some of his brothers, his siblings.

**[1:13:53]** Abu Bakr ibn Ali, Uthman ibn Ali, Muhammad ibn Ali, Ja'far ibn Ali, al-Abbas ibn Ali. He has his sons. He has two Ali's from his sons. The older one, Ali al-Akbar, and then he has the smaller one, the young Ali, who is the only survivor of that day.

**[1:14:14]** I'm going to have to dedicate a biography towards him because he's one of the most beautiful human beings in Islamic history. Zayn al-Abideen Ali ibn al-Husayn. He became sick on the day of Karbala. He ran a high fever. And so he was in the tents with some of the women and those that were excluded from the war.

**[1:14:32]** He had some of the children of his brother, al-Hasan. Radiallahu anhu. Abdullah al-Qasim, Abu Bakr, the son of al-Hasan. He had some of his cousins, Ja'far, Abdullah, Abdur-Rahman, Abdullah ibn Muslim, ibn Aqeel. Some of the kids of Abdullah ibn Ja'far.

**[1:14:49]** Right? So all of them, for the most part, come from the family of the Prophet (ﷺ). Ahl al-Bayt al-Nabi (ﷺ). You would think that people would feel... Shame. But, unfortunately, the massacre would prevail.

**[1:15:06]** Al-Husayn radiAllahu ta'ala anhu, before the battle would start, I mean, it's 73 men against 5,000. Like, what are you guys going to do? Like, what is this madness and insanity? He lit some fires as protection behind the women and the children, like, at least spare them.

**[1:15:24]** And he stood up and he tried to reason with the people, with the status of him, the grandson of the Prophet (ﷺ) and the man that he is, as well as the rights of those people. Right?

**[1:15:40]** And al-Husayn radiAllahu ta'ala anhu, as he's speaking, unfortunately, you can see the shaytan working his way through the army. The first person, al-Hurr ibn Yazid, remember al-Hurr ibn Yazid, who led the 1,000, the group? He defects.

**[1:15:58]** He goes towards al-Husayn radiAllahu ta'ala anhu, and he asks him for forgiveness. And he says, khoyirtu bayna al-jannati wal-naar fakhtartu al-jannah. He said, I was given the choice between jannah and hellfire. I'm going to choose jannah. And he defects and he goes to... He defects and he goes to al-Husayn radiAllahu ta'ala anhu.

**[1:16:19]** And a few people go with him as well. But then the battle will go forth. On the night of At-Tasu'a of Muharram, the night of Muharram, al-Husayn radiAllahu ta'ala anhu spent the whole night in prayer. And he was comforting the people amongst him.

**[1:16:39]** And subhanAllah, there are these incidents of his sister Zaynab radiAllahu ta'ala anha, begging him or pleading with him, panicking. And al-Husayn radiAllahu ta'ala anhu comforting her. And you can see the conversations that take place between people that believe in life after death, when death actually is that imminent.

**[1:17:00]** And one of the du'as that was narrated from him is that he said radiAllahu ta'ala anhu, Allahumma anta thiqati fi kulli qarb, wa anta raja'i fi kulli shidda. Beautiful words. Allahumma anta thiqati fi kulli qarb. Remember it's called Karbala.

**[1:17:16]** Oh Allah, you are my strength in every distress. Wa anta raja'i fi kulli shidda. And you are my hope in every trial. And so al-Husayn radiAllahu ta'ala anhu spends the night praying. He spends the night comforting the people and then he comes out courageous and strong.

**[1:17:34]** And so this battle that would have lasted by just the sheer numbers for a few minutes, I mean, because of the disproportionality of it all actually ends up lasting for hours. Al-Husayn radiAllahu ta'ala anhu went forward. And yes, there are some people who felt that pull of faith inside of them on the other side that didn't want to go forth.

**[1:17:55]** Like we don't want to kill al-Husayn radiAllahu ta'ala anhu and, you know, relatives of the Prophet salAllahu alayhi wasallam. But then Shimr starts to shout out and starts to incite them and starts to yell loud and starts to push the people towards the camp to attack and to kill al-Husayn radiAllahu ta'ala anhu

**[1:18:16]** and the family of the Prophet salAllahu alayhi wasallam. He was not radiAllahu ta'ala anhu in any way lacking in terms of his strength or his courage. He moves forward. And if you look at the sequence of deaths, the first person that was killed was his son Ali,

**[1:18:34]** Ali al-Akbar, Ali ibn al-Husayn. And it devastated him, right? The first person to see fall was his own son. And then he had another young son, a young child, and that child was struck in the face with an arrow.

**[1:18:50]** And you can hear the outrage, like even, you know, subhanAllah, with normal human beings, hatta atfaluna, even our children. And he said, ayyukta alwaladi a'tsham, will my child die thirsty? Because remember these people were starved and made thirsty. And subhanAllah, what does that tell you about Gaza?

**[1:19:06]** Wallahi, it's like these companions, you see Gaza in them. Like the moral outrage of what is happening here, right? That my child was struck in the mouth. Until al-Husayn radiAllahu ta'ala anhu then saw the son of al-Hasan fall and die, al-Qasim ibn al-Hasan.

**[1:19:24]** And he said, samihni ya ibn akhi, azizun ala ammik. He said, forgive me, oh son of my brother. You mean so much to your uncle. Like I wish I could have come to you when you called out for my help. So he's seeing people fall around him radiAllahu ta'ala anhu.

**[1:19:41]** And then he is struck with an arrow, radiAllahu ta'ala anhu. And the man who would kill him is a man by the name of Sinan ibn Anas. Husayn radiAllahu ta'ala anhu after fighting bravely would be martyred with 34 sword wounds.

**[1:20:00]** 34 radiAllahu ta'ala anhu. The grandson of the Prophet salAllahu alayhi wasallam. And the devastating part beyond that as well is that this man beheaded him radiAllahu ta'ala anhu.

**[1:20:16]** SubhanAllah some of the scholars they mentioned the du'a of Zakariya alayhi salam for Yahya alayhi salam. That Yahya alayhi salam was beheaded. Yahya and that's how he was one of the meanings of his name Yahya. A person of Hayya, a person who has eternal life.

**[1:20:31]** Husayn radiAllahu ta'ala anhu is beheaded. This noble beautiful human being beloved to the Prophet salAllahu alayhi wasallam. Along with 17 other members of Ahl al-Bayt of the family of the Prophet salAllahu alayhi wasallam.

**[1:20:48]** And his head was brought back to Ubaydullah ibn Ziyad. And wallahi it shows you that when evil overtakes a person, that human beings truly, taj'alu fiha man yufsidu fiha wa yasfikud dima'

**[1:21:04]** That human beings can become more evil than shayateen. They can become more devilish than the devil himself. Ubaydullah ibn Ziyad he brought forth the head of al-Husayn radiAllahu ta'ala anhu.

**[1:21:20]** And he took his stick and he started to poke at it. Poke out the eyes, poke out the head. And he did this in front of who? Anas ibn Malik radiAllahu ta'ala anhu. Anas ibn Malik radiAllahu ta'ala anhu he sees him poking the head of the grandson of the Prophet salAllahu alayhi wasallam.

**[1:21:39]** Who the Prophet salAllahu alayhi wasallam used to hold. And the Prophet salAllahu alayhi wasallam used to smell his head and used to kiss him. He sees him poking at him, mocking him. Anas radiAllahu ta'ala anhu says I saw the Prophet salAllahu alayhi wasallam kiss those same lips. I saw the Prophet salAllahu alayhi wasallam kiss that same head.

**[1:21:55]** Like what a filthy human being you are. How dare you do this to the grandson of the Prophet salAllahu alayhi wasallam. To the Rayhan of the Prophet salAllahu alayhi wasallam. And by Allah he resembles the Prophet salAllahu alayhi wasallam. Like what is wrong with you? The madness of this all. And the curse would be brought upon Ubaydullah ibn Ziyad and those that carried out this oppression.

**[1:22:19]** Subhanallah later on. And this is what I want you to pay attention to. This was the day obviously Ashura, the 10th of Muharram that his martyrdom took place. One year later Ubaydullah ibn Ziyad. One year later Ubaydullah ibn Ziyad was beheaded by another tyrant.

**[1:22:36]** Mukhtar al-Thaqafi on the 10th of Ashura. And his head was beheaded. And he was played around with in the same way that he played around with the head of al-Husayn. Radhiallahu ta'ala anhu. And they took the head of al-Husayn back to Yazid ibn Muawiyah in Damascus.

**[1:22:56]** His body in Karbala. His head taken back. And as Imam al-Dhahabi rahimahullah said that there is dispute over where his head is buried. Whether it's in a particular column in the great masjid of Damascus.

**[1:23:11]** Or in a particular bab al-Faradis in Damascus. Or wherever it may be. But the point is that they dismembered the body of the beloved one of the Prophet (ﷺ).

**[1:23:27]** And there's so much in terms of the curse. And every single person that participated in the murder of al-Husayn radiAllahu ta'ala anhu. And the horrible things that happened to them in this dunya. That they all had a terrible fate in this dunya.

**[1:23:43]** That the la'na of the people, the curse of the people reached them. But subhanallah beyond this all. Beyond the severity of this. Is something in the midst of all of this. That you have to be able to understand.

**[1:24:00]** That this young man as soon as he was murdered in this dunya. And he wasn't young when he was murdered in this dunya. That his soul was reunited with the Prophet (ﷺ) in that very moment. That there is shahada, that there is loneliness, that there is cruelty.

**[1:24:15]** And that with the cruelty of some men you see the courage of others. And you see what comes out in terms of the ideals. In terms of the values of a people. And how that becomes a legacy for all times to come.

**[1:24:30]** And how the courage of al-Husayn radiAllahu ta'ala anhu becomes such an inspirational legacy. That even if you're all alone, even if you're fighting tyranny by yourself. That there is victory even in shahada. That there is victory in martyrdom. That even if they kill your body they cannot kill your soul.

**[1:24:47]** And that if a people lose themselves in the process of tyranny. You gain jannah in that process as well. I end with one narration. Abdullah ibn Umar radiAllahu ta'ala anhuma. Because this goes to the priorities of the ummah today.

**[1:25:02]** There was a man that came to him and obviously he was enraged by what had happened. A man that came to him and he asked him about the najasa of the blood of a mosquito. The najasa of a blood of a mosquito. The impurity of the blood of a mosquito.

**[1:25:18]** Like a question about tahara. And Abdullah ibn Umar radiAllahu ta'ala anhuma said, where are you from? He said, I'm from Iraq. He said to him, look at this man. You ask me about the blood of a mosquito. While you allowed for the blood of the son of the messenger of Allah (ﷺ) to be shed.

**[1:25:37]** And they were the sweet basils of the Prophet (ﷺ). The rehana of the Prophet (ﷺ). Like where are your priorities? How screwed up is your thinking? And you know what? That's a lesson for us too. That when things are happening right now as they are.

**[1:25:53]** In Gaza. And the blood of the Muslims is flowing. With ease. And the sanctuary of Masjid al-Aqsa is under the occupation that it's under. Think about some of the religious discussions that we have.

**[1:26:09]** And some of the debates and the things that embroil us in our discourse. It's like, where are you? Where's your head? Where's your heart? Because even though they are not the grandson of the Prophet (ﷺ). They are the Ummah of Muhammad (ﷺ).

**[1:26:25]** And when you're seeing this type of tragedy. Don't numb yourself with the greater matters of the deen. By dividing yourselves on some of the smaller matters of the deen. So may Allah (ﷻ) send his peace and blessings upon his Prophet (ﷺ).

**[1:26:40]** Upon his family, upon his companions. May Allah (ﷻ) allow us to be of those who are lovers of Allah. Lovers of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ). Lovers of the family of the Prophet (ﷺ). Lovers of the companions of the Prophet (ﷺ).

**[1:26:56]** And lovers of the Ummah of the Prophet (ﷺ). May Allah (ﷻ) forgive us for our incapacity. May Allah (ﷻ) never allow us to become numb towards dhulm, towards oppression. May Allah (ﷻ) protect us from being engulfed by oppression. And becoming oppressors ourselves.

**[1:27:11]** Allahumma ameen. I apologize. I didn't have enough time. May Allah (ﷻ) allow us to be joined with the Prophet (ﷺ) and his family and his companions. Allahumma ameen. Jazakumullahu khayran. Wassalamualaikum warahmatullahi wabarakatuh.
