**[0:00]** I've been waiting for a very long time to say welcome back to The Firsts. We resume after several months, walhamdulillah. And subhanAllah, we come to a story that is so pertinent to the times.

**[0:22]** And in fact, if I was to say that there was one companion that emblemizes Gaza, it is the companion that we're going to be covering tonight. To remind everyone, my intention for this season of The Firsts is to go into the children

**[0:37]** of the sahaba who are sahaba themselves. So sahaba that were the children of sahaba whose stories showed up in the story of their parents as we covered their parents. But now we want to do a deep dive on their lives and how they outlived their parents

**[0:54]** and what they experienced uniquely as they went on in life. And subhanAllah, I want to start with an image. Imagine you're in Iraq and you see a man in his 90s.

**[1:09]** And there's this scene that many of us might have encountered over a screen where you see someone that has a gruesome injury on them and you cringe a bit. And if you see it in person, it's even harder sometimes. What happened to you?

**[1:26]** What is this gruesome injury that you see? You're in Iraq and you see this man in his 90s. He's a man with exceedingly dark skin and he doesn't dye his hair. So he has a full gray beard and gray hair and he wears a black turban, but he's missing

**[1:46]** one ear. He takes that black turban off and he removes his thawb, leaving his sirwal so that he could properly do wudu. When he goes to Hajj, he wears an undergarment because of an injury that he suffered.

**[2:02]** So he has an excuse by which he wears an undergarment under his ihram. You look at him and you're not aware of the story and you see on him injuries on his chest and on his back, burns, deep wounds, meaning pieces of his body where flesh is actually

**[2:23]** missing. Other parts where you have swollen welts that are coming out of his body, other parts where you have scars and you look at his body, you say, ya Allah. Most people don't ask the question, what is that? Where did that come from?

**[2:39]** He's over 90 years old, so this is a history that the person who is encountering him with certainly did not encounter themselves. And then one man asks a young man, what is this?

**[2:54]** What happened to you? And he responds and he says, These are the traces of what Quraysh used to torture me with in the heat of Mecca.

**[3:11]** Who are you? Ammar ibn Yasir, the son of the first shuhada of Islam. We live in an era where we see shuhada leave us by the hundreds or the thousands by the day.

**[3:26]** A name here, a name there, a kid named Ammar, a kid named Sumayya, a kid named Yasir. And imagine having the distinction and being able to say to a Muslim, decades after the Prophet ﷺ has passed, I am the son of the first shuhada of Islam, of the very first

**[3:48]** martyrs of Islam. Ammar ibn Yasir (رضي الله عنهما). And inshallah ta'ala, as we look at this man and I take you from the scene, because I was just thinking about it, some of the younger tabi'een explaining that he was a man of very

**[4:04]** few words. He actually didn't use to speak much. And if you came near him, you would hear him quietly making dhikr and seeking refuge in Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala from the fitan, from the tribulations to come, because he knew that he had lived into a period where tribulations were going to rise, just like

**[4:20]** the Prophet ﷺ had said. He was a man (رضي الله عنه), who had seen everything, but spoke very little. And he came from incredible parents. Ammar ibn Yasir (رضي الله عنهما).

**[4:36]** His nickname or his kunya was Abu al-Yaqdan. I combed through the books as much as I could to see what the wisdom was of his name being Abu al-Yaqdan. Some of the authors said that Yaqdan is a virtue because you either have a kid that's

**[4:52]** named that, and that's why you're the father of so-and-so, or you have a virtue that represents that, or you had the intention to have a son and you would have named your son that. So some of the authors said Yaqdan comes from the same as Yaqada, someone who is awake,

**[5:07]** someone who is vigilant, someone who is deeply perceptive of the world and not in a state of ghurur or ghafla, not in a state of delusion or heedlessness. And that certainly fits the bill with Ammar ibn Yasir (رضي الله عنهما). Or perhaps he intended to have a son that he would one day name Yaqdan and Allah ﷻ

**[5:27]** blessed him with a son, but he chose to name him what? After the person that he was told to curse and the person that was most beloved to his Lord, who? Muhammad. So he is Aba Muhammad, the one son that we know of from Ammar ibn Yasir is Muhammad ibn

**[5:45]** Ammar ibn Yasir. May Allah ﷻ be pleased with the entire family. Allahumma Ameen. And the story of how the Qadr of Allah ﷻ brings people to Mecca in the first place to encounter this man Muhammad ﷺ and his message, and to give birth to multiple stories

**[6:03]** that we still study today is from Aja'ib al-Qadr, from the wonders of the decree of Allah ﷻ. His mother Sumayya bint Khattat (رضي الله عنها) is a woman that was born in Habasha,

**[6:19]** born in Abyssinia, and she was brought as a slave to Mecca. And so she was enslaved to Banu Makhzum, particularly to a man by the name of Abu Hudhaifa ibn al-Mughira from Banu Makhzum, the same tribe as the Fir'aun of this Ummah, Abu Jahl.

**[6:37]** Yasir ibn Amir ibn Malik was a man from Yemen. And he wasn't a powerful man. He wasn't someone that came from a very particular tribe. He came to Mecca for something very specific. And that is that in one of the pilgrimages or one of the trades, his brother disappeared

**[6:57]** in Mecca. So he and two other brothers, Yasir, al-Harith and Malik, whose brother came to Mecca on a trade or a pilgrimage and never returned, came from Yemen, may Allah ﷻ bless the people of Yemen, Allahumma ameen, and went looking for their brother and asking, have you seen

**[7:17]** this man? Have you seen this man? Have you seen this man? When they couldn't find their brother, al-Harith and Malik returned to Yemen. Yasir said, I think I'm going to stay here in Mecca and try to start a life here.

**[7:33]** Yasir remains in Mecca and he allies himself to Banu Makhzum. He becomes a haleef to Banu Makhzum, which is a very awkward position in society. You're not quite a slave, but you're also not quite inducted into the tribe.

**[7:50]** When you think about all the distinctions that we have in this great country, beacon of freedom, and yes, I'm being sarcastic right now, and you think of all of the distinctions and all of the paperwork and all of the ways that people get identified, haleef is one of those awkward positions in between.

**[8:07]** So he's allied to Banu Makhzum, particularly to Abu Hudhaifa ibn al-Mughira. Abu Hudhaifa decides to marry Yasir to Sumayyah. May Allah be pleased with them both. So he marries the one who is loyal to him to his slave girl, Sumayyah, who then gives

**[8:30]** birth to Ammar (رضي الله عنه), and Ammar (رضي الله عنه) is freed by Abu Hudhaifa, who seems to exhibit some of the noble qualities that Quraysh wanted to be known for. Abu Hudhaifa passes away either right before Islam or right after the Prophet ﷺ begins

**[8:51]** to preach in smaller circles. So he is not someone who we know to have embraced or opposed Islam, but he dies, which leaves Yasir and Sumayyah and their children in a very awkward position.

**[9:07]** So they're broadly allied to Banu Makhzum, protected in that sense, but they also have to be amongst those people of society that keep their heads down and work and don't say anything, don't disrupt, don't do anything that's going to cause you the ire of anyone

**[9:25]** noble in Mecca, because if you get into it with anyone of any status in Mecca, you will be at fault, you will be tortured and you will quickly be relegated back to a slave. And so you can imagine the quiet nature of their lives.

**[9:42]** They have two children, Ammar and another child that subhanAllah we don't hear much about, whose name is Abdullah. And believe it or not, this Abdullah, Ibn Hajar Rahimahullah says, was tortured along with his family, but he was so quiet and so subdued that we don't know anything about

**[10:00]** him after he embraces Islam. And we don't know anything about the circumstances of his death, (رضي الله عنه), as so many of the firsts that embraced Islam and whose names we still don't know, but Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala knows who they are. So they're in Mecca and the Prophet ﷺ begins preaching in a very small setting.

**[10:22]** Ammar (رضي الله عنه) is almost the same age as the Prophet ﷺ. So he's not as young as you would think he is when you sort of play out the story in the memory of the Muslims. His parents were very old.

**[10:38]** And so even though he's a child of sahaba, he himself (رضي الله عنه) is also close to the age of the Prophet ﷺ. And some of the writers say the same age as the Prophet ﷺ. He was a strong man and he was also a strong minded young man (رضي الله عنه).

**[10:59]** He had learned and perfected the physical arts of society, but he was a hard worker that was doing exactly what his parents did and exactly what his parents told him to do. But when he heard about the Prophet ﷺ, you can imagine the strong resonance of a message

**[11:16]** that is as liberating as tawheed in a society like that. So Ammar couldn't help himself and he describes it himself that I couldn't help myself. And so I heard that Muhammad ﷺ, who was known by his virtues, known by his qualities,

**[11:32]** which is an essential part of the da'wah, known as a trustworthy person. The Prophet ﷺ was the son of Mecca and there was not a single negative interaction that the Prophet ﷺ had with one of the poor or oppressed ones of Mecca before Islam, which tells you something that, you know, when you hear as-sadiq al-ameen and these noble virtues,

**[11:54]** it could have in that society been assigned to the Prophet ﷺ by virtue of how he just treated the nobles of Mecca. They had that cognitive dissonance in society and we can see it in societies today, where if the Prophet ﷺ was rude and rough and belligerent towards the slaves and the weak

**[12:10]** ones and the meek ones of society, but he was noble with that class of society, he still would have earned all of those nicknames. But the Prophet ﷺ was known to be noble and virtuous with all of them. He had a reputation (عليه الصلاة والسلام) of being fair, of being just, truthful.

**[12:27]** And la ilaha illallah is a different message. And I'm going to read a poem now. I'm going to read a poem now. I'm going to read a poem now. I'm going to read a poem now. I'm going to read a poem now. I'm going to read a poem now. I'm going to read a poem now. I'm going to read a poem now. I'm going to read a poem now. I'm going to read a poem now. I'm going to read a poem now. I'm going to read a poem now. I'm going to read a poem now.

**[12:42]** I'm going to read a poem now. I'm going to read a poem now. I'm going to read a poem now. I'm going to read a poem now. I'm going to read a poem now. I'm going to read a poem now. I'm going to read a poem now.

**[13:00]** And I bumped into Suhaib Arumi. And I bumped into Suhaib Arumi. And I encourage you to go back and to watch the full lectures of these companions as well. And I encourage you to go back and to watch the full lectures of these companions as well. So me and Suhaib bumped into each other. So me and Suhaib bumped into each other. And the conversations you can imagine are very difficult because you don't know if that person is coming to listen or that person is coming to spy or that person has no idea what's happening. And the conversations you can imagine are very difficult because you don't know if that person is coming to listen or that person is coming to spy or that person has no idea what's happening. And the conversations you can imagine are very difficult because you don't know if that person is coming to listen or that person is coming to spy or that person has no idea what's happening. And you have to figure it out on the spot.

**[13:15]** And you have to figure it out on the spot. So Ammar said I preceded him. So Ammar said I preceded him. And I said to him, what are you doing here? And I said to him, what are you doing here? So Suhaib, as smart as Ammar, said, what are you doing here? So Suhaib, as smart as Ammar, said, what are you doing here? And they both have this moment. And they both have this moment. And so Ammar says that I am not going to listen to you. And so Suhaib, as smart as Ammar, said, what are you doing here? And so Ammar, as smart as Ammar, said, what are you doing here? And so Suhaib, as smart as Ammar, said, what are you doing here? So Suhaib, as smart as Ammar, said, what are you doing here? **[13:49]** So Suhaib, as smart as Ammar, said, what are you doing here? So Suhaib, as smart as Ammar, said, what are you doing here? So Suhaib, as smart as Ammar, said, what are you doing here? So Suhaib, as smart as Ammar, said, what are you doing here? So Suhaib, as smart as Ammar, said, what are you doing here? So Suhaib, as smart as Ammar, said, what are you doing here? So Suhaib, as smart as Ammar, said, what are you doing here? So Suhaib, as smart as Ammar, said, what are you doing here? So Suhaib, as smart as Ammar, said, what are you doing here? So Suhaib, as smart as Ammar, said, what are you doing here? So Suhaib, as smart as Ammar, said, what are you doing here? So Suhaib, as smart as Ammar, said, what are you doing here?

**[14:04]** So Suhaib, as smart as Ammar, said, what are you doing here? So Suhaib, as smart as Ammar, said, what are you doing here? So Suhaib, as smart as Ammar, said, what are you doing here? So Suhaib, as smart as Ammar, said, what are you doing here? So Suhaib, as smart as Ammar, said, what are you doing here?

**[14:34]** So Suhaib, as smart as Ammar, said, what are you doing here? So Suhaib, as smart as Ammar, said, what are you doing here? So Suhaib, as smart as Ammar, said, what are you doing here? So Suhaib, as smart as Ammar, said, what are you doing here? So Suhaib, as smart as Ammar, said, what are you doing here? So Suhaib, as smart as Ammar, said, what are you doing here? So Suhaib, as smart as Ammar, said, what are you doing here? So Suhaib, as smart as Ammar, said, what are you doing here?

**[14:49]** So Suhaib, as smart as Ammar, said, what are you doing here? So Suhaib, as smart as Ammar, said, what are you doing here? ...ma ma'ahu illa khamsatu... I saw with him except that he had five slaves,

**[15:07]** ...wa mra'atan, two women, wa Abu Bakr, and Abu Bakr as Muslims. So this is how early his Islam is. He said he had five slaves with him that embraced Islam, two women that embraced Islam and Abu Bakr as-Siddiq (رضي الله عنه). So it shows you what's developing around the Prophet ﷺ.

**[15:25]** And of course, we know that one of those slave companions that he's referring to is none other than Suhaib al-Rumi (رضي الله عنه) himself. The word starts to get out about the Islam of people, one by one,

**[15:42]** people start to find out. At some point, Ammar is the one who introduces Islam to his parents, and this is significant. Why? Because you can imagine then the way Shaytan could come to a person and could inflict guilt on the heart of Ammar when

**[15:58]** he's watching his parents tortured later on that you did this to them. You brought them this affair of al-Islam. His parents initially were risk averse. They didn't want anything that's going to disrupt in society or cause any extra

**[16:14]** eyeballs on them. It was risky. But Ammar tells them about Islam and the very first time he introduces Islam to them, both of them, Sumayya (رضي الله عنها) and Yasir (رضي الله عنه) accept and they say, take us to the Prophet (ﷺ) and they embrace Islam in private. So they keep themselves quiet.

**[16:36]** They enter into the ranks of al-mustaqfoon, not saying anything in society to cause any type of, you know, ruckus in that society. Abu Jahl eventually finds out as he is going around and torturing the, or not torturing yet, but persecuting, bullying the Muslims

**[16:56]** from other tribes that by the way, you have a family that has embraced Islam that is from the weakest of those amongst you. They are from those who are loyal to you, halif to you,

**[17:12]** right? Yasir is a halif to you, to Banu Makhzum. So you're responsible for them and they're right under your nose. Abu Jahl being the Fir'aun of this ummah and the coward that he is, decides to make an example out of the most vulnerable people that he possibly can,

**[17:30]** those that are under the control of Banu Makhzum. So he takes this family out. Muhammad ibn Umar says that al-mustaqfoon refer to, the weak ones refer to, qawmun laa ashaira lahum bi makkah.

**[17:46]** They have no family in Mecca. Wa laysat lahum man'atun wa laa quwa. They don't have anything to forbid punishment from coming to them, nor do they have strength to do anything for themselves. So Quraysh decided at some point to make the greatest example out of these people,

**[18:04]** to a'adhibuhum fir ramda'i, that they would torture them in the burning heat of the midday so that they could cause them to abandon their religion. The idea was to make a display out of a group of the weakest and most vulnerable people of Mecca. And they had an actual area

**[18:24]** where they tied them up. They strung them in different ways. They beat them in different ways. They made sure that the people of Mecca heard their cries. And the idea was that they would serve two purposes. Number one, they would abandon their religion.

**[18:41]** And there was something psychologically to watching people abandon their religion. And so the idea was let's make these people relinquish their religion. Abu Jahl beat some people blind. He beat the young slave girls in Nira (رضي الله عنها) until she lost her eyesight. Tortured

**[18:56]** them in every way. And the Prophet (ﷺ) could not do anything to support them. What makes their situation even more difficult is that if they were outright slaves, then Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (رضي الله عنه) purchased the freedom of Bilal (رضي الله

**[19:11]** عنه). He purchased the freedom of Khabbab (رضي الله عنه). But these people had a status that left them in this awkward position. Abu Bakr (رضي الله عنه) can't purchase their freedom. The Prophet (ﷺ) cannot defend them. And so you can imagine the

**[19:29]** psychology then of walking by this display of tortured people and having to see it every single day in front of you, tied up, bloodied up, dehydrated, starved, exhausted, and telling them

**[19:44]** where is your God? Where is your Allah? You think that Prophet can do anything for you, pointing towards the Prophet (ﷺ). None of them abandoned their deen. None of them abandoned their religion. And so that only made Abu Jahl increase in the torture.

**[20:02]** The Prophet (ﷺ) would walk by and he would cry with them and he would make du'a for them. But the Prophet (ﷺ) physically is restrained from being able to do anything for them. So the Prophet (ﷺ) says the famous words, sabran aala yasir. Be patient, O family of Yasir.

**[20:21]** fa inna mawa'idakum al-jannah. Jannah has been promised to you. You have an appointment in Jannah. You have a guarantee from Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala of Jannah. But I want to get into some of the visuals here. Uthman ibn Affan (رضي الله عنه) says that I walked with the Prophet

**[20:38]** (ﷺ) and he was holding my hand. And we walked by this group of people. And you can imagine Uthman (رضي الله عنه) belongs to the most powerful, the most privileged of society, but they're purposefully going and looking at the torture to try to comfort those who are being tortured, to try to intercede on their behalf. And the Prophet

**[20:57]** (ﷺ) is doing his best, but he's stuck (عليه الصلاة والسلام). And as they're passing by, Yasir (رضي الله عنه) calls out and he says, aah, ad-dahru haa kadha. He says, this is our fate. This is our time. And the Prophet (ﷺ) says,

**[21:18]** asbir ya Yasir. Allah maghfir li al Yasir. Allah maghfir li al Yasir. Be patient, oh Yasir. Oh Allah, forgive the family of Yasir. Oh Allah, forgive the family of Yasir. To give you an idea, Yasir (رضي الله عنه) was so old at this point that they said that his eyebrows were missing

**[21:35]** and he looked like he was already on the brink of death. Like think about the sickness of a man like Abu Jahl to torture a man who's already at the brink of death. He's already an old man. So Sumayya (رضي الله عنها) was an old slave woman, about 20 years older than the Prophet (ﷺ). So she would have been in her sixties. Yasir would have been at least in

**[21:54]** his seventies at that time in that society. And Abu Jahl is stepping on them. He's punching them. He's torturing them. So the Prophet (ﷺ) says, sabran aal Yasir. Allah maghfir li aal Yasir. Another time from Abu Zubair, the Prophet (ﷺ) passed by

**[22:10]** and he said, abashiru aal Ammar, innama wa'idakumul jannah. Glad tidings to you, oh family of Ammar. Your promised reward is paradise. I promise you jannah. And they would respond and they would say, we're going to be patient, ya Rasulullah. We're patient,

**[22:26]** ya Rasulullah. We're patient, ya Rasulullah. How bad does it get? SubhanAllah, it's not just physical torture, it's psychological torture as well. The first one they thought was going to die was going to be Yasir (رضي الله عنه). And so they tortured him and tortured him and

**[22:45]** tortured him. And Abu Jahl makes it even dirtier. He says to Sumayya (رضي الله عنها), that I bet you want him to die so that you can marry Muhammad (ﷺ). Tortures her psychologically, mocks her and Sumayya (رضي الله عنها) is responding to Abu Jahl. And

**[23:05]** what frustrates him is how dare this puny old woman respond to me, speak to me this way, right? So when he curses the Prophet (ﷺ), she curses him. When he says something

**[23:21]** about Allah (عز وجل), she curses the idols. Everything that Abu Jahl says, Sumayya (رضي الله عنها) responds. And eventually as Abu Jahl is torturing Yasir and torturing Sumayya,

**[23:36]** she spits at him and she responds to him in the way that she does. Then he takes this to another level and a Pharaoh never stops. Once he starts, he escalates. And this was one, he took his spear and he put it through the midsection of Sumayya (رضي الله عنها) and martyred her

**[23:56]** in front of her husband and in front of her son. The first martyr of Islam, this old beaten woman from Habasha, from Abyssinia at the hands of the Fir'aun of this Ummah. And if he is the Fir'aun of this Ummah, then we can say that she is the Asiya of this Ummah, similar to Asiya (رضي الله

**[24:17]** عنها) when she was killed by Fir'aun. And she saw her place in Jannah at the very first strike. Imagine Sumayya (رضي الله عنها) when she sees her place in Jannah at the very first strike with what has happened to her. Sabran ala Yasir. You can imagine Ammar's position hearing the

**[24:37]** shout of his mother. Yasir could not bear (رضي الله عنه) the sight. He died almost instantly after Sumayya (رضي الله عنها) under the torture. And that leaves us only with Ammar (رضي الله عنه) who had to witness that and see that. And so we get into

**[24:55]** the specifics of Ammar (رضي الله عنه) and his torture. Umar ibn al-Hakam, he says, Ammar would be tortured until he would not know what he is saying. He was physically stronger and so the torture would last longer for him because he was actually a physically strong man, but he

**[25:14]** would be subjected to so much torture that he would not know what he is saying. What did they also do with him? They also burned him. So they would set parts of him on fire (رضي الله عنه) and then they would put the fire out.

**[25:29]** Fakana Rasulullahi (ﷺ) ya murru bihi The Prophet (ﷺ) would walk by him. Waya da'u yadahu ala ra'sihi And the Prophet (ﷺ) would put his hand on his head. And the Prophet (ﷺ) would say, Ya naru kuni bardan wasalaman ala Ammar kama kunti ala Ibrahim O fire, be cool and peaceful on Ammar. As you were on Ibrahim.

**[25:45]** O fire, be cool and peaceful on Ammar. As you were on Ibrahim. O fire, be cool and peaceful on Ammar. As you were on Ibrahim. O fire, be cool and peaceful on Ammar. As you were on Ibrahim. Prophet (ﷺ) tried to console him with the very specific methods of his torture.

**[26:01]** So he was beaten, he was set on fire. He saw his parents killed in front of him. And of course in the middle of that where he doesn't even know what he's saying at some point he succumbs and he repeats after Abu Jahl and curses the Prophet (ﷺ)

**[26:17]** not from here but just from here. His senses jarred his senses jarred and you talk about forced confessions like what's happening to him what he was subjected to and he utters these words

**[26:34]** that hurt him more than the physical torture that he'd actually been subjected to and so he's finally let go the puny man Abu Jahl despite being physically as large as he was gets what he wants he gets his victory that I made him curse the Prophet (ﷺ)

**[26:50]** The Prophet (ﷺ) sees Ammar ibn Yasir after that he said, what is it? What's happening to you? Evil, O Messenger of Allah it's all bad and the Prophet (ﷺ)

**[27:06]** said, you know, what happened? They didn't leave me alone until I took my share of you like I said what I said about you and he's weeping

**[27:23]** and you can imagine the Prophet (ﷺ) actually says in the narration is wiping the tears off of Ammar and he says to Ammar (رضي الله عنه) fa kayfa tajidu qalbak how was your heart when you said all that? qalu mutma'innun bil iman ya Rasulullah

**[27:39]** fully like assured with faith at no point, subhanAllah he could have said I was out of it I was confused, he said no I was actually fully assured with faith I never lost faith in the midst of this torture

**[27:55]** I never actually lost sight of who you are I never lost sight of the beauty of Islam and the Prophet (ﷺ) said fa in'adu fa'ud that if they do it to you again do it again if they torture you again say what you said again

**[28:11]** it doesn't matter if you say it from here if you don't believe it in here it's okay ya Ammar in one of the narrations the Prophet (ﷺ) mentions to him that they use the tactic what appears to be like waterboarding

**[28:28]** like they drowned Ammar (رضي الله عنه) so you can imagine, they set him on fire one day they whip him one day, they dehydrate him they starve him, they put his head in water they make him think he's drowning and the Prophet (ﷺ) alludes to that and the Prophet (ﷺ) says to him fa qulta katha wa katha

**[28:44]** so you said this and this and if they do it to you again then say it again, it's okay you're not guilty of doing anything wrong can you imagine being Ammar (رضي الله عنه) coming out of that and how you feel

**[29:00]** psychologically how broken of a man you could be and this is where the companions say Allah (عز وجل) revealed illa man ukriha wa qalbuhu mutmainun bil iman except for the one who was forced and his heart was full of faith

**[29:17]** his heart was completely assured with faith nazalat fee ammar ibn yasir (رضي الله عنهما) ammar ibn yasir (رضي الله عنهما) has to live for six years walking around and seeing the man who did what he did to his parents

**[29:33]** walk free and gloat this is also part of the torture right like someone did that to your parents and did that to you and you can't touch them in society the helplessness

**[29:49]** we talk about how emasculated we feel seeing what's happening in Gaza how difficult it is to watch what's happening and the ajz that we feel the inability that we feel imagine being Ammar (رضي الله عنه) walking around and knowing that's the guy that did that to my parents and I can't do anything to him I can't touch him because if I do then I'll be killed and so he has to put his head down continue to believe and continue to suffer as a result of that and that is a fitna for the companions remember when Bilal (رضي الله عنه) was brought out of torture by Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (رضي الله عنه) he has to restrain himself from Umayyah

**[30:29]** who tortured him in the way that he tortured him he has to see him walking around in his fine clothes and robes with all of his slaves and all of his wealth and doing what he does and he can't do anything to him until Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala wrote it down for him at Badr the revenge for Bilal (رضي الله عنه) Ammar (رضي الله عنه) has to hold himself for all of these years now subhanAllah sometimes the narration then has life when you know what the person has been through many of you have heard the saying

**[30:59]** death is enough of a sermon it's enough of a reminder we say this subhanAllah when we're just talking about death as a whole the imagery of a casket being brought forward and the janaza being prayed and then the image of someone being buried and it takes away your appetite for life it

**[31:18]** completely removes any appetite that you have for life imagine the lack of appetite that Ammar had for life when he saw what happened to his parents when death was so close to him in the way that he was

**[31:33]** so it's not authentic to the prophet (ﷺ) but it's a narration that he would say and he would say three things (رضي الله عنه)

**[31:49]** that death is enough of a reminder that yaqeen certainty is enough of wealth like i have what i need and my certainty i know where my parents went i know where i'm going i know there is a god i know that this is the prophet (ﷺ) i know that this is all true and so i can lean into it

**[32:10]** and worship is enough to keep a person busy how did he live these three things well there is another ayah that ibn abbas says was revealed about

**[32:28]** where Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala mentions a person who stands up in qunut who stands up in devotion throughout the night in sujood and also in rukur and in the various positions of salah he said

**[32:44]** that he was the one that would devote long hours in the night worshipping Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala he didn't speak much and subhanallah you didn't live with him and i didn't live with him to know why but you can imagine the trauma and the difficulty that he went through and really a

**[33:01]** feeling of brokenness and devastation with everything that he went through he kept himself busy with Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala you can imagine the way that he thought about his parents you can imagine the lack of the appetite that he had for this dunya and Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala has a plan for him one of the narrations about him by the way is he used to pray long prayers

**[33:20]** between maghrib and isha so ammar would pray maghrib and then he would stand up and he would continue to offer nawafil until salatul isha it's also narrated about him

**[33:39]** the very first person who took a masjid in his home that he dedicated for the worship of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala was ammar ibn yasir so he's the first one that had the concept of a musalla in his home where he would keep himself devout with Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala and this became a trend amongst

**[33:59]** the companions then to designate a part of their home as a musalla so you think about like a good sunnah a good a good thing to have to designate a part of your home as the place of prayer is something that we learned from ammar ibn yasir and then that spread with the rest of the

**[34:16]** companions and then what even with everything that he suffered they didn't leave him alone so he was one of those that made hijrah to al-habasha in the second hijrah so he first made his migration to abyssinia which is the homeland of his mother

**[34:36]** so we don't know of any narration of him actually going to habasha as a child but of course he is he himself is half abyssinian so he escapes the persecution of mecca he goes to abyssinia

**[34:52]** and then he makes his way to medina as soon as the prophet alludes that that is where the hijrah is going to be and so i just want you to mark all of the virtues here he's one of the mustafafeen of mecca one of the weakened oppressed ones of mecca he is the son of the first shuhada of islam

**[35:08]** he is from as-sabiqoon al-awwaloon maybe one of the first 10 people to embrace islam he is from now ashab al-hijratain the people who made hijrah twice the people made hijrah twice who migrated for the sake of Allah twice he makes his way to al-madina al-munawwara and he was very early

**[35:30]** so he stays in uh in in one house the house of mubashar ibn abdul mundir and then eventually the prophet (ﷺ) would make muakha between him and hudayfa ibn al-yaman (رضي الله عنه) hudayfa (رضي الله عنه) of course being known as the secret keeper

**[35:45]** of the prophet (ﷺ) and someone who was safe from hypocrisy you can see the way the prophet (ﷺ) pairs people off a abid a worshiper in the depths of the night who doesn't say much who doesn't do much in public but who privately

**[36:02]** devotes themselves to Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala and attains a status with Allah and has no appetite or interest to lie or to cheat in this world devotes themselves to Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala in every way so him and hudayfa have a very similar personality type they also become two of

**[36:20]** the favorite people to omar bin al-khattab (رضي الله عنه) as we'll see later on in their lives omar identifies certain people from the companions that he likes to keep close to him for his entire life omar certainly is one of those people and al-bara' (رضي الله عنه) narrates

**[36:35]** qala awwalu man qadima alayna mus'ab ibn umair wa ibn ummi maktoum thumma qadima alayna ammar this gives you an idea of how early he came to al-madinah munawwara he says the first people to come to us were mus'ab ibn umair and then abdullah ibn umma ktoum and then came to us

**[36:52]** and then came to us bilal so those that were escaping persecution in some way right and they made the early trip as we know some companions stayed in abyssinia and did not come until years later to al-madinah but omar as soon as he heard the news of the move to al-madinah munawwara he

**[37:08]** made his way to madinah i came across this narration subhanallah and i have to admit you know there's usually one narration when i'm preparing on a companion that blows my mind in the preparation for this lecture this is the narration that blew my mind it's a narration from

**[37:26]** musaddid qala lam yakun fil muhajireena ahad abawahu muslimani ghayra ammar ibn yasir there was not a single person from the muhajireen who both parents were muslim except for ammar ibn

**[37:42]** yasir and i actually started to think about and i said subhanallah you go one by one and you think about the plight of the convert right and the companions of the prophet (ﷺ) every single one of the muhajireen had one or two parents that were not

**[38:00]** muslims and almost all of them their parents were actually hostile to islam and that was one of the reasons why they had to flee mecca to al-madinah ammar (رضي الله عنه) has the distinction of being the only one who both parents are muslim and they're the first two shuhada of islam

**[38:19]** the first two martyrs of islam and that that's more about the culture of the companions themselves may Allah be pleased with them all and so they come to quba there's a narration that shows up in the biography of ammar and the sanad can't be traced to the prophet (ﷺ)

**[38:35]** but it's frequently in the books of seer al jannah to tashtaqu ila salash it's a beautiful meaning that jannah longs for three people jannah longs for three people and um and it is mentioned ammar soheib i'm sorry ammar salman al-farsi and ali ibn abu talib ammar ibn yasser salman al-farsi

**[38:58]** and ali ibn abu talib may Allah be pleased with them all the reason why i bring this narration up here first of all the concept of jannah missing people is something authentically established to the prophet so of course jannah would long for these three like if jannah calls out for its inhabitants imagine how much jannah wanted ammar and wanted salman al-farsi and wanted ali ibn abu

**[39:20]** talib but i thought about quba here because you're going to start to see some of the makings of the story of ammar where he can now shine outside of persecution in quba and i thought about these three men and how it's all coming together the story of islam ammar ibn yasser (رضي الله

**[39:35]** عنه) ammar witnessed his parents being martyred almost was killed made his way to abyssinia made his way to medina you can imagine the stress and the travel and everything he'd been through salman al-farsi (رضي الله عنه) started in persia went through syria went through iraq

**[39:52]** went through turkey went back to syria went all over the world found his way in quba as a slave coming to the prophet (ﷺ) in quba to finally embrace the man that he'd been searching for his entire life ali (رضي الله عنه) was the last person to leave mecca the last person to

**[40:08]** make hijrah he walked the entire hijrah he walked it so he arrived in quba the last person his feet were full of blisters that whatever semblance he had of sandals were completely torn to pieces

**[40:26]** al-jannah can you imagine how much jannah wanted these three men to come to them right and this idea here of struggle culminating in this place but what's so unique about these people is that they didn't simply wear their persecution as a badge of honor and then stop

**[40:45]** it was narrated that when they started to build quba the masjid ammar (رضي الله عنه) was always carrying twice the load of everybody else so he's carrying two bricks while everybody else was carrying one brick strong man and he's pushing himself and

**[41:02]** the prophet (ﷺ) is with him as he's carrying these bricks and the prophet (ﷺ) says yeah ammar why don't you just carry what everybody else is carrying and he says to the prophet (ﷺ) because i want double the reward i'm carrying twice the load because i want double the reward like these men were never satisfied

**[41:21]** that i already went through enough i can now relax and finally take a breath because i've made hijrah twice now i went through what i went through he's carrying twice the load and the prophet (ﷺ) validates that and says he calls him by the his mother's name

**[41:41]** his mother's name which is a sign of her virtue and he says everyone has a single reward but you have two rewards and the prophet (ﷺ) says something very interesting to him that will only come to make sense later on in his life

**[42:01]** the prophet (ﷺ) says and the last thing that you will drink in this life will be a sip of milk very interesting the last thing you'll drink in life will be a sip of laban before you pass away from this world another narration and you can imagine the prophet

**[42:16]** (ﷺ) and ammar ibn yasir and the men that built this place after what they had been through ammar (رضي الله عنه) was building and he was singing

**[42:33]** we are the muslims we build the masajid and the prophet (ﷺ) was repeating after him so you can imagine if there was a rhythm to it like the prophet (ﷺ) singing alongside him or chanting the poetry alongside him that we are the muslims we build the masajid we build the

**[42:50]** houses of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala and they're building what the first house that was built after the advent of the prophet (ﷺ) the first masjid that was founded in islam after the prophet (ﷺ) and so you can imagine the excitement like in mecca we couldn't

**[43:10]** even find a place to pray without being harassed and now we get to build a masjid these are things that we take for granted these are things that we don't think about right i mean we're in dallas there's a masjid being built actually i should be very careful now that islamophobes are descending upon our community we're not building any masajids right the point is is like these are things we take

**[43:31]** for granted we build masjids and you can imagine the glee and the excitement of these believers for the sake of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala with all that we've been through with all the wounds here we are building something fresh imagine being next to the prophet (ﷺ) carrying the bricks and chanting this and the prophet (ﷺ) chanting with you

**[43:50]** as a means of of showing that that uh that affirmation uh to you and the prophet (ﷺ) as he is going through the motions with ammar at some point

**[44:07]** got very sick could be the exhaustion of the journeys i mean you went through what you went through in mecca you went to abyssinia you came to medina and you're already building and putting yourself through this and some of the people said that we think ammar is going to die

**[44:23]** and the prophet (ﷺ) said no he's not going to die and he said that he will be killed by al-fi'at al-baghia a transgressing army that he still has a long life ahead of him and he will be killed by a transgressing army so he's going to survive and he's going to live

**[44:43]** another prophecy that the prophet (ﷺ) gives to him imagine subhanallah he survived abu jahl and the prophet (ﷺ) is already saying in this moment of happiness that he's going to be martyred himself in an affair that he is

**[44:59]** not yet aware of nor are the Muslims aware of. It's also narrated that as they set themselves up in Al-Madinah al-Munawwara that the prophet (ﷺ) allotted a home, a land for Ammar ibn Yasir and this was a sign of the prophet (ﷺ)'s love for him, right?

**[45:17]** And showing him the appreciation for everything that he had been through. So he had a mawdi, he had a specific place in Al-Madinah that was allotted for him to restart his life in Al-Madinah al-Munawwara and he would be someone that would be so close to the prophet (ﷺ)

**[45:32]** as you can imagine, he is from the early Muslims. He's from Ashab ul-Hijratain and he witnessed every single battle alongside the prophet (ﷺ). So he is one of Al-Badriyun, one of the people of Badr and every other battle that followed alongside

**[45:48]** the prophet (ﷺ) and he says something even greater than that. He says, qataltu ma' rasoolillahi (ﷺ) al-insa wal-jin I killed or I fought alongside the prophet (ﷺ) human beings and jinn.

**[46:05]** And they said to him, how did you fight jinn? We understand you fought human beings. You strove alongside the prophet (ﷺ) in Badr and Uhud and Khandaq and beyond but you even fought jinn. And he said that in one of the expeditions, we were camping with the prophet (ﷺ)

**[46:21]** and I went to draw water late in the night and the prophet (ﷺ) told me that something is going to come and try to stop you from drawing water. It's in the darkness of the night and Ammar (رضي الله عنه) said, I went out to draw that water

**[46:37]** and an ugly beast appeared before me and told me that you will not draw a single drop of water. And he said, I killed that beast. I went and I drew the water and I came back to the prophet (ﷺ) and the prophet (ﷺ) says, that was a shaitan.

**[46:54]** What you just killed was a shaitan that was trying to prevent you from that water. So he used to say that I fought alongside the prophet (ﷺ) al ins wal jinn. So he's someone who was extremely close to the prophet (ﷺ) sent out on some of the most sensitive expeditions.

**[47:10]** If you go back and you watch the episode about Abad ibn Bishr (رضي الله عنه), you can see Ammar and Abad on the most difficult of missions from the prophet (ﷺ) in the most vulnerable positions, watching what is transpiring before them

**[47:25]** and taking turns in qiyam and watching the back of the Muslims and being struck in the path of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala in this regard. So his closeness to the prophet (ﷺ) is very obvious. His struggling alongside the prophet (ﷺ) is also very obvious.

**[47:40]** And subhanAllah, there's something that, there's a story that's mentioned between him and Umar ibn Khattab (رضي الله عنه) that's actually pretty funny. Umar (رضي الله عنه) was out with Ammar (رضي الله عنه) on an expedition. And Ammar says that at some point this expedition,

**[48:00]** we were in Janabah, we were in a state where we need to do ghusl, but we couldn't find water. So this is how the sahabah are trying to figure out the deen on the go. So what's tayammum in this case? How do you do tayammum? If you run out of water and you need to actually do ghusl not wudu,

**[48:16]** how do you do tayammum? It's a fiqh question by the way. Same way you do it for wudu, right? Tayammum doesn't change. But Ammar doesn't know that, and Umar doesn't know that, they're still waiting. And so Ammar is, it just shows you where his mind is at, right?

**[48:33]** Ammar says, you know what? Just in case. And he goes and he starts rolling around in the dirt, his entire body. And Umar (رضي الله عنه) did tayammum as it was, and they came to the Prophet (ﷺ), and the Prophet (ﷺ) obviously confirmed that Umar (رضي الله عنه) had done the right thing,

**[48:49]** but just shows you the mindset of this young man that wants to do everything exactly the way that will give him the greatest reward with Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala and following the Prophet (ﷺ). And so he holds tight to the Prophet (ﷺ)

**[49:05]** in every way. And when the Prophet (ﷺ) passes away, he's absolutely devastated. We don't have too many spoken narrations from him because he wasn't someone that used to speak a lot, right? But he's someone who was constantly in the battlefield

**[49:20]** alongside the Prophet (ﷺ) and insisting upon the truth. And subhanAllah, when the battle of Yamama comes, Umar (رضي الله عنه) finds himself in a very precarious situation. Umar was the one who was known to not be killed alongside his parents.

**[49:36]** He wasn't martyred with his parents, but I want you to imagine the scene. In the battle of Yamama, it's narrated that Ammar ibn Yasir stood up on a mountain and his ear was hanging.

**[49:53]** You know what that means? This man who'd already been subjected to all the torture that he'd been subjected to, his ear was hanging off just by a little bit of flesh. You can imagine the pain that he was in as the blood was flowing from him.

**[50:10]** And he stood up and he shouted to the Muslims, Ya ma'shar al-muslimin, amina al-jannati tafirroon. Oh Muslims, are you running away from Jannah? Oh Muslims, are you running away from Jannah? Ana ammar ibn Yasir, halummu ilayh.

**[50:25]** I am Ammar ibn Yasir and he's calling to the enemy, come to me, come at me. I will fight until the very last moment. Now you wonder about that narration, al-jannatu tashtaqu ila thalaf. The Jannah longs for people. Imagine the strength, the sincerity it takes

**[50:43]** to stand up in that moment and to call out and to say, oh Muslims, are you running away from Jannah in this regard? But there's a human element that comes to this as well. Ammar (رضي الله عنه) pretty much lost that ear.

**[50:59]** And a man saw him later on. And if you don't know who he is, you might make assumptions about him. He's not someone that dresses in a particular way. He doesn't belong to a powerful tribe,

**[51:14]** an old beaten down man. And so a man calls out to him and says, ayyuhal ajda' later on, which basically is calling attention to his ear being cut off, like oh deformed one.

**[51:32]** And he's referring to the ear. And Ammar (رضي الله عنه), he responds. And he says, khayru uzunayya sab'at. You cursed the better of my two ears. Because this ear, I lost it in the path of Allah

**[51:47]** Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala. So you're mocking me for this deformity, but you cursed the better of my two ears. Think about the clarity that that takes. The heart, the mind, everything that you've been through, all the torture. And you say, this is a badge of honor for me.

**[52:04]** I went through this for the sake of Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala. So you can imagine why Umar (رضي الله عنه) loved this man so much. And so when Umar (رضي الله عنه) opens Iraq, he sends to Kufa two people.

**[52:22]** He sends Ammar ibn Yasir as the Amir, and he sends Ibn Mas'ud as the teacher. May Allah be pleased with them both. Like, Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala, these two men are coming to you. By the way, there's so much to just comment on this here. Ibn Mas'ud (رضي الله عنه) was not an imposing physical figure.

**[52:39]** He was, right, physically a person who they would have said had dwarf syndrome, extremely short, (رضي الله عنه). He was a black man with two braids, (رضي الله عنه), unassuming and coming from that elitist society.

**[52:55]** His name is Ibn Ummi Abt. He doesn't have any tribe that he comes from. He has no claim to any elitism. Ammar ibn Yasir is with him. And Umar (رضي الله عنه) sends a letter to the people of Iraq. I'm sending you the two most beloved people to me,

**[53:11]** the most distinguished of the companions of the Prophet (ﷺ). One of them is an Amir over you. The other one will teach you. They are from the people of Badr. You listen to them, you obey them, you follow their lead. I have preferred you over me by letting you have Ibn Mas'ud.

**[53:28]** Like I had to send you an Amir in Ammar ibn Yasir, but I sent you even more than that. I sent you Abdullah ibn Mas'ud and I love Ibn Mas'ud. So Umar is struggling to send people that he loves keeping next to him in Medina. And SubhanAllah, he loved Ammar so much

**[53:43]** that when he would send the provisions to the different companions, he gave Ammar twice the provision. He knew what Ammar went through. He knew the struggling that he went through for the sake of Allah, SubhanAllah, the sincerity of that man. And so he allotted two portions to Ammar ibn Yasir,

**[54:02]** (رضي الله عنهما). Now imagine by the way, if you were in Iraq, this is what it looked like. One narration is that Ibn Mas'ud (رضي الله عنه) would lecture or he would give his halaqa, his address on the night of Friday, meaning Thursday night. Like imagine your Thursday night halaqa

**[54:19]** is Abdullah ibn Mas'ud or Friday before Jum'ah and Ammar as the official Amir would ascend the manzar and he would give the khutbah. Ya Allah, what a people. You get to hear Ibn Mas'ud give a halaqa and then Ammar ibn Yasir give a khutbah.

**[54:35]** For years, that's your life. You talk about the golden days of Islam, right? Each one of them drawing on their deepest experiences with the Prophet (ﷺ), both of them having suffered fee sabirillah, both of them having been with the Prophet (ﷺ) when he had the Quran being revealed to him.

**[54:53]** Ammar (رضي الله عنه) had a very specific black turban that he would wear and he used to recite Surah Yasin from the minbar in one narration. You imagine the Quran being recited by these people and imagine when Ammar (رضي الله عنه) comes across

**[55:11]** the man who was killed in Surah Yasin in the very beginning. qila dkhulil janma qala ya layta qawmi ya'lamoon If only my people knew. And who symbolizes that man in Surah Yasin, that murdered man in Surah Yasin,

**[55:26]** more than his parents, right? ya layta qawmi ya'lamoon If only my people knew better. Ammar (رضي الله عنه) continued, even though Umar would send him a large portion, he lived an extremely humble life.

**[55:42]** They said that we saw him and he had only one rope to tie his garment. And he requested another rope from a seller and the man refused. So Ammar (رضي الله عنه) basically cut his one habal, one rope in half, and he turned it into two to cover himself properly

**[55:59]** with the one garment that he owned and he would walk through the streets, even though he was basically the equivalent of a governor for some time. Ammar ibn Yasir kept himself quiet, kept himself in the worship of Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala until the very last moments of his life.

**[56:17]** And he used to frequently seek refuge from Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala from anything that would possibly corrupt him. Umar (رضي الله عنه) eventually removes him, right? He removes him from his place. And this was of course, one of the ways of Umar in not keeping people

**[56:34]** for too long as amirs over certain places. So Umar asked Ammar, he said, did it bother you that I removed you? And he says, laqad sa'ani heinast a'maltani First of all, it bothered me when you appointed me

**[56:50]** and it bothered me when you took me out, but it bothered me more when you appointed me. Like I was more disturbed when you made me the governor than when you took me out, when you removed me from the position because of the aman of the position. So Umar wanted to make sure that he wasn't hurting the feelings of a man of the stature with Allah

**[57:08]** and the messenger (ﷺ). And then SubhanAllah, the fitna comes. And when the fitna breaks out and confusion arises and people start to turn on each other. Abdullah bin Umar, it's narrated that he said,

**[57:24]** (رضي الله عنهما) ma'alamu ahadan kharaja fil fitnati yureedullaha illa Ammar I don't know anyone that was more sincere for the sake of Allah Subhanahu wa ta'ala when the fitna happened than Ammar ibn Yasir. Like truly in all of this, as people are getting caught up in different things

**[57:39]** and fitna brings out the worst in people. Ammar (رضي الله عنه) was sincere for the sake of Allah Subhanahu wa ta'ala. And one of the narrations about him is that kana Ammar ibn Yasir qaleel al kalam he was very little in speech,

**[57:55]** taweer al sukoot, long periods of silence. You know when there's someone that goes a long time and they don't say anything, like you start wondering, like what's that person thinking about? And he starts even poking, say like, you know, see if he can get them involved in the conversation. So taweer al sukoot is Ammar ibn Yasir,

**[58:12]** even though everything he'd been through in all of his lofty positions, taweer al sukoot, long periods of silence. And he says about him, that the most that you would hear him speak a'idhun bil rahmani min fitna.

**[58:28]** He would be seeking refuge in a Rahman from a fitna, from the times of tribulation. And he said, fa'uridat lahu fitnatun azeena. And so as a result of that, SubhanAllah he ended up going through a deep fitna. But at the same time, he held himself (رضي الله عنه)

**[58:44]** throughout the entire process of the fitna. When groups started to split, he pledged his allegiance to Ali (رضي الله عنه). And as he pledged his allegiance

**[58:59]** to Ali (رضي الله عنه), he asked Ali (رضي الله عنه), what do you say about the children of those that are fighting against you? And Ali (رضي الله عنه) said, there's no blame on them. Ammar said, had you said otherwise,

**[59:14]** I wouldn't have pledged allegiance to you. Meaning it's like, he's a man of principle. I wanna see what Ali is going to say, how Ali (رضي الله عنه) is driven in all of these moments. And what do you say if Aisha (رضي الله عنها), Ummul Mumineen is on the other side, would you count her amongst the spoils?

**[59:31]** And Ali (رضي الله عنه) said, of course not. And Ammar (رضي الله عنه) said, had you said otherwise, I would have opposed you. Like I wanna make sure that we're standing on principle here, that we're not standing upon something that is batil,

**[59:46]** standing upon something that is falsehood. And this now goes back to the Prophet (رضي الله عنه). The amount of times that the Prophet (رضي الله عنه) would say, taqtuluhu al fi'atu al baghiya. That when fitna arises, if you want to know where the truth is, look at where Ammar is killed.

**[1:00:07]** Like he's the criterion of truth. SubhanAllah. So no one wants to kill Ammar ibn Yasir because obviously then it would fall upon them that we're the ones who are in the wrong here in this fitna if we kill Ammar ibn Yasir. And Ammar ibn Yasir (رضي الله عنه) was

**[1:00:23]** on the side of Ali (رضي الله عنه). So where are all of the different times? The Prophet (ﷺ) was prophesying this for Ammar from the day of Quba. And I just think about this and I'm like, you saw your parents killed. You made hijrah to Abyssinia.

**[1:00:38]** You just got to Medina. You're tired. You're covered in dust and you're carrying bricks and the Prophet (ﷺ) says, by the way, you're going to be murdered. SubhanAllah, all that I've been through. That's one time the Prophet (ﷺ) gives him the prophecy. Another time was in Khandaq. And Ammar (رضي الله عنه) like the

**[1:00:56]** Prophet (ﷺ) is covered in dirt as they're facing a genocide. Right? They're in the trench. And the Prophet (ﷺ) is dusting off the head of Ammar ibn Yasir and saying that you will be killed by the transgressing group. So that's

**[1:01:13]** one of the times as well. Another situation, the Prophet (ﷺ) was approached and said, we heard that Ammar died and the Prophet (ﷺ) said, Ammar has not been killed. Ammar is not dead. Like the Prophet (ﷺ) was given something of what would happen to Ammar (رضي الله عنه) later on. And on the day of Siffin,

**[1:01:34]** the battle of Siffin, Ammar (رضي الله عنه), he finds himself drinking a bowl of milk. And as he looks at that bowl of milk, SubhanAllah, it takes him back decades ago. And he says, I remember when the Prophet (ﷺ) said the last sip that you

**[1:01:51]** will have in this world is a sip of milk, a sip of Laban. So he takes that sip of milk and he goes forward and he says, Azifatil jinano wazuwijatil hurul aino al yawman alqa

**[1:02:06]** habibina muhammadin (ﷺ). He says, Jannah has come close. I have been married to the maidens of paradise. And today I will finally be reunited with my beloved Prophet (ﷺ). So he goes out in complete peace (رضي الله عنه).

**[1:02:24]** And he was killed (رضي الله عنه). And the Prophet (ﷺ) indeed made him the criterion of the truth. Right? Like think about that. The son of the first martyrs and you think of the wisdom of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala in him not being killed on the day of his parents, like he lived all that life. Decades and decades later of khair.

**[1:02:46]** The decree of Allah (عز وجل) to bring his parents from Yemen and Abyssinia to Mecca to embrace the Prophet (ﷺ). And then for him to survive somehow that torture of Abu Jahl and to find himself in that situation and to be a man who was martyred (رضي الله

**[1:03:03]** عنه) in the midst of a fitna and to be noted as a criterion of truth. And we'll talk about the implications of that, especially when we get to the life of Abdullah ibn Amr al-Asr who plays a significant role in that. And so he dies (رضي الله عنه) and

**[1:03:18]** how old was he? 93 years old. 93 years old. A shaheed, the son of shuhada. He experienced everything that we think about when we talk about the people of Gaza. Ta'deeb, tahjeer,

**[1:03:35]** torture, being forced to migrate for the sake of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala. Hideous wounds that other people would not understand when they saw him and they would ask questions about the wounds that he had, but he was beautiful (رضي الله عنه) in his own way because he manifested that light that Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala had put on him. And can you imagine

**[1:03:54]** the reception? Like you talk about people reuniting. Can you imagine the reception of Ammar then to his parents Sumayya and Yasir? May Allah be pleased with them all. I want to end with one note because we're out of time. So I was, I was trying to look into

**[1:04:12]** his family, find any information that I could. And the only one that you find any information about is his son, Muhammad. Muhammad ibn Ammar ibn Yasir. He was a tabi'i. He wasn't born in the time of the prophet (ﷺ), but he is a muhaddith. He's someone

**[1:04:27]** that narrates on behalf of his father, narrates on behalf of the companions and rises in the ranks of scholarship. And he finds himself in a very weird situation. You know, when fitna blows, people just lose their, their moral compass. Muhammad ibn Ammar ibn Yasir

**[1:04:46]** was asked to fabricate a hadith for the benefit of someone. And the man's name was al-Mukhtar ibn Abi Ubaidah al-Thaqafi. He was a complex figure in Islamic history. So al-Mukhtar asks him to fabricate a hadith in his benefit. And when he says no, he kills him. And I was

**[1:05:07]** thinking about this and I said, SubhanAllah, you notice that it's like Allah chooses families for shahada. When you're looking at the people of Gaza and you see generations of shuhada, it's like, it's like Allah appoints certain families for shahada. And every generation

**[1:05:27]** is a shaheed. And you wonder, SubhanAllah, something so trivial, but a matter of integrity. His grandparents were killed because they refused to curse Muhammad (ﷺ). His father was killed and he was the criterion of truth from the Prophet Muhammad

**[1:05:46]** (ﷺ). And he was killed because he refused to lie in the name of Muhammad (ﷺ). And Allah takes this whole family of shahada. All of this, when you read through it on our side, again, SubhanAllah, seems extremely sad. We're talking

**[1:06:05]** about a people 1,400 years ago. And imagine, imagine as you have the birds of the shahada flying around and not all of the shahada have the same distinction and not all of the believers have the same distinction. Imagine what Sumayya and Yasir and Ammar and Muhammad Ibn Ammar

**[1:06:26]** look like. And imagine their celebration with the Prophet (ﷺ) and receiving the shahada of Gaza bi-idhnillahi ta'ala and the shahada all over the world. We ask Allah Subhanahu wa ta'ala to be pleased with these companions who strove and strove

**[1:06:42]** so that we could have this message reach us so pristine. We ask Allah Subhanahu wa ta'ala to reward them for their dedication to the truth. And we ask Allah Subhanahu wa ta'ala to commit us to that truth as well. And we ask Allah Subhanahu wa ta'ala to make us amongst those that are willing to sacrifice for the truth as they sacrificed. And we ask Allah

**[1:07:00]** Subhanahu wa ta'ala to make us steadfast upon the truth as they were steadfast upon the truth. And we ask Allah (عز وجل) to allow us to die upon that truth and to meet Allah while he is pleased with us and to meet our messenger (ﷺ) while he is welcoming us along with the other shahada.

**[1:07:16]** Allahumma Ameen.
