In this Snapshot, Imam Tom Facchine breaks down the... ## Transcript **[0:00]** The modern Muslim leader does not suffer from a lack of information. He or she suffers from the inability to make sense of that information and act effectively. The skill that you need to do so is discernment. Because knowledge is just information about what's true. **[0:18]** Discernment tells you what's urgent, what's secondary, what's dangerous, and what's just a distraction. Some people know a lot of evidence, but cannot read a certain situation so that they can apply it or put it together. Some people can quote scholars, but can't tell when they're being emotionally manipulated. Leaders must learn when to speak, when to wait, when to escalate, when to de-escalate, and when silence is safe as well as when silence is actually cowardice. **[0:41]** Discernment involves asking, what's the actual issue beneath the surface? This has a lot of applications in fatwa. Religious leaders are asked all the time about this, that, and the third. And one of my favorite things is when people come to me and ask, what's the ruling of X, Y, or Z? Well, are you really asking about the detached, decontextualized, theoretical ruling of something? **[1:01]** Or are you really trying to apply that ruling in a specific situation? Because those are two very different questions. And in this way, a community can be harmed by a leader who's always correct, but never wise. Discernment is knowing the difference between a confused person, a malicious person, and a wounded person. **[1:18]** A leader must also know the difference between a real crisis and a manufactured controversy. This happens all the time online. Social media rewards instant reaction. Leadership requires being more measured and actually charting the course for other people. Not everything that is a controversy or is trending online needs a response, needs you to weigh in on. **[1:35]** Everybody needs to ask themselves a question. Are you a producer on social media or are you a consumer? If you're a consumer, you are the product. Don't think for a second that you're actually a user. No, you're being used. You're being programmed. You're being manipulated. Whether you're a man or a woman, it doesn't matter. They are after you. They are very smart. **[1:52]** They pay people to do this full time. They break you down psychologically. We also see this in real life when it comes to people trying to keep us on the back foot and keep us defensive. Do you condemn this? Do you condemn that? You could spend your whole life condemning lots of things that you have nothing to do with, **[2:07]** but it's really just a tactic to keep you busy and to drain your energy to stop you from doing other things. Like if people are trying to say Islam is violent. Muslims believe that Islam clearly condemns violence. World War I was not about religion, but nationalism. **[2:22]** It claimed the lives of 15 million people. World War II was about fascism, and up to 80 million people were killed. Soviet atheism was explicitly against religion, but it resulted in more violence and deaths than any religious battle in human history. **[2:38]** 62 million people were murdered under the Soviet regime. And in the past centuries, European colonialism resulted in the deaths of 50 million people. These things are not serious responses or even good faith criticisms. Occasionally, you'll get people who are simply misinformed that you need to have a back and forth with. **[2:56]** But many times, people know. The ummah needs people who can judge between noise, priority, and obligation. So as a practical framework, you can begin asking, is this true? Is this thing important? And is it my responsibility to respond to this? Is it the right time? Is it the right tone? **[3:13]** And is this the right platform to do so?
