What’s praised, what’s mocked, and what you can’t say out loud all teach you what to love. But what happens when belonging starts costing you something you didn’t agree...

**[0:00]** Muslims don't believe in rendering to Caesar what is Caesar's, because we know full well that Caesar will get in the way of your religion if he's unchecked. Now, every society has a moral curriculum. People are trained to admire certain lifestyles and pity others.

**[0:18]** Society also teaches you what kind of person is considered successful and what is not. It teaches you what kind of religiosity or religious expression is acceptable. It also teaches you what kind of Muslim is scary. I will teach your daughter to properly respect a man. I speak only when spoken to. I do not need a bed. I prefer to sleep on the floor.

**[0:36]** The only religion that acts like the mafia, that kills you if you say the wrong thing, draw the wrong picture, or write the wrong book. Society does this not only through laws, but also through soft power, entertainment, culture, education, and incentives.

**[0:52]** Leaders have to learn to read the moral language beneath the messaging. Advertising is a moral education. Indulge yourself. You deserve one. Entertainment is a moral education. University culture is a moral education. Corporate culture is also a moral education. Of course, media framing, we already know, is a moral education.

**[1:09]** The question isn't, does this society have values? Every society has values. The question is, which values and how do they stand up to scrutiny? Muslim leaders have to learn to decode what is being rewarded and punished and compare that with what we're taught to embody in Islam.

**[1:27]** Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala, when He talked to the angels and told them what He was going to do, that He was going to create human beings, He says, إِنِّي جَاعِلٌ فِي الْأَرْضِ خَلِيفَةً He said, I'm going to put on earth a khalifa. And that's significant because Allah could have said other things.

**[1:42]** He could have said, I'm going to put insan on earth. He could have said, I'm going to put nas on earth or bashar on earth or any other word, but he chose khalifa. Because khalifa is not a description of what you and I are. It's a description of what you and I were meant to be.

**[2:00]** It's a job description. It's an aspiration. Communities become weak ultimately when they absorb the moral language of their environment without noticing or pushing back. We have a duty to speak the truth. So if we're not confronting the falsehoods of our time, we're actually abandoning our sacred duty.

**[2:17]** Now, as a practical exercise, in any space that you enter, whether it's work or it's university or something else, ask yourself, what types of behaviors or values are praised here and what is mocked? What are things that I could not even speak about in this space?

**[2:34]** And what types of behaviors and attitudes are rewarded? Maybe more importantly, what must a Muslim hide in order to belong? Because power doesn't only tell you what to do. It also teaches you what to love and who to be.
