## Description
When an odd night meets a Friday, is it Laylatul Qadr? Some scholars say that when the best night aligns with the best day, it holds extra weight. But does that mean tonight is the night? In this brief reminder, Dr. Omar Suleiman explores what happens when blessed times coincide, why scholars...

## Transcript
**[0:00]** Tonight is a very special night for two reasons. It is one of the last ten nights of Ramadan being an odd night, and it's also what? It's also Laylatul Jumu'ah, Friday night.

**[0:16]** Now SubhanAllah, I remember a few years ago, and every so often it happens that when an odd night coincides with a Laylatul Jumu'ah, that there is a snippet from the book of Al-Hafidh Ibn Rajab, his famous work, Lata'if Al-Ma'arif,

**[0:35]** which we read from in Ramadan in particular, by the way. Every single imam uses that book to talk about the virtues of Ramadan, where he's quoted, and he quotes that it is hoped that if an odd night coincides with Laylatul Jumu'ah,

**[0:53]** coincides with a Friday night, which is technically a Thursday night, that that has a greater possibility of being Laylatul Qadr. That is his quote, and I wanted to actually speak about that insha'Allah ta'ala, but situated in a broader context.

**[1:08]** So first and foremost, by the way, I've never seen it happen in my recent memory, at least on the first of the last ten nights, and SubhanAllah, I always think to myself, you know, imagine if Laylatul Qadr is the first of the last ten nights, and we're just getting warmed up, and it hits you in the first of the last ten nights, and it could be the first of the last ten nights,

**[1:29]** and how many people would have missed out on the khair, missed out on the good of that. So may Allah allow us to catch Laylatul Qadr, whatever night it is, Allahumma ameen. But you know, I can't remember it being Laylatul Jumu'ah and the first of the last ten nights. I remember it being the 25th night a couple of years ago, and that discussion happening.

**[1:46]** So I actually wanted to build on this a bit. Number one, there's no hadith of the Prophet (ﷺ) that says that if an odd night coincides with a Friday night, that it has a greater possibility of being Laylatul Qadr. There's no statement from a companion of the Prophet (ﷺ), or from an early member of this ummah that would have gotten that knowledge from the Prophet (ﷺ).

**[2:10]** So there is no evidence to actually solidify this. But there's a principle that I want to build upon, insha'Allah ta'ala, which is what happens when multiple blessed occasions come together. So there's either the occasion of multiple blessed times, or multiple blessings within a singular deed.

**[2:31]** And let me explain that. There are deeds that are blessed in and of themselves. The Prophet (ﷺ), for example, advised to fast three days of the month. Aisha (رضي الله عنها) was asked, any three days? She said, any three days. And I'm paraphrasing the hadith.

**[2:46]** But we know that the best three days to fast are what? The middle three days of the month. So the 13th, 14th, and 15th, which are known as ayyamul bid. The middle three days of the month are the best three days. But fasting any three days of the month, you would get the reward, bi'idhnillahi ta'ala, of fasting three days of the month.

**[3:05]** But if you want to fast the best three days of the month, then you would fast the middle three days of the month. Also we talked about 12 rak'ahs during the day, of sunnah. Any 12 rak'ahs, bi'idhnillahi ta'ala, of voluntary prayer, may Allah build you a house in paradise, a palace in paradise as a result of it.

**[3:22]** All of us, Allahumma ameen. But there are the specific rawatib of the Prophet (ﷺ), the things that he used to do, the prayers he used to pray all the time. So you would hope, bi'idhnillahi ta'ala, that that's the best 12 rak'ahs. That you could pray, if you're going to pray 12 rak'ahs extra throughout the day.

**[3:38]** So you'll get the blessing on top of the general blessing that exists there. Then you have deeds that you can combine multiple intentions for, and they're blessed. So the Prophet (ﷺ) said the best spending, the best dinar that you will spend is on who?

**[3:56]** Your family. Because it will be sadaqah and silah together. Charity and the establishing of the ties of kinship. And so if you have, for example, someone that is not directly, and there are multiple layers to this, not to go down that tangent.

**[4:14]** But if there's someone, for example, that is a relative of yours, but you're not directly responsible for spending upon them, and you prioritize them with your sadaqah, it could be a means of sadaqah as well as bringing them close. Or if you're spending on someone that you are responsible for anyway, then that's a way of building what already exists as a foundation.

**[4:33]** But you could have sadaqah and silah. And then there are even zakatable members of your family that you aren't directly responsible for already. So you can't give zakah to someone that you have to spend on anyway. But there are multiple virtues that can be found within a deed to make that deed even more blessed.

**[4:50]** Two virtues to be combined in one. Also when it comes to timings, is there a basis for multiple timings meeting? And there being some virtue to that. Fasting a single day, the Prophet (ﷺ) mentioned whoever fasts one day in the path of Allah ﷻ,

**[5:07]** Allah ﷻ will put between him and the hellfire 70 ditches of distance. May Allah ﷻ make us amongst those who get multiple versions of that. Allahumma ameen. And put us a big distance between us and the hellfire. And each ditch is like the distance of the heavens and the earth, right?

**[5:25]** So it's a huge reward of fasting one day. But you fast Mondays and Thursdays. The Prophet (ﷺ) mentioned that on Mondays and Thursdays the deeds are presented to Allah ﷻ. On Mondays and Thursdays. And so he wanted to be in a state of fasting when the deeds are presented to Allah ﷻ.

**[5:43]** He also mentioned that Monday was the day that he was born (ﷺ). So he was fasting out of gratitude to Allah ﷻ. And so Mondays and Thursdays the deeds are presented to Allah. Monday there is the added gratitude of the Prophet (ﷺ) having been born that day

**[6:00]** and his gratitude to Allah ﷻ. So you can find multiple things that start to coalesce around a singular deed. So what do we do with this? A laylatul jum'ah, a Friday night, as well as an odd night.

**[6:17]** Everything that I'm about to tell you is meant to push you towards tonight. And then once the night is over and Fajr comes, I want you to forget everything that I said. So that you can pursue the other nine nights. Why? Because once you get to the next night, you push yourself, you push yourself.

**[6:33]** You say, wait a minute, it could be the night. Wait a minute, it could be the night. Wait a minute, it could be the night. But here's what I want you to keep in mind and here's what I want you to take into consideration. Laylatul jum'ah is a beautiful night, it's a blessed night. The Prophet (ﷺ) mentioned to prioritize what deed on the night of Friday.

**[6:53]** I'll give you a clue, you just did it. Salawat on the Messenger (ﷺ), to send peace and blessings upon him. He mentions that specifically for this time. Now in the virtue of salawat on a normal laylatul jum'ah, on a normal Friday night,

**[7:11]** when you send salawat on the Prophet (ﷺ), you could do it in any of the ways that we do. You could do it the way that you do in your salah. اللهم صلي على محمد وعلى آل محمد كما صليت على إبراهيم وعلى آل إبراهيم All of them, but the point is, send salawat on the Prophet (ﷺ).

**[7:29]** And what are the rewards of salawat in general? SubhanAllah, it has all of the blessings, all of the benefits that you seek on a night of Laylatul Qadr. It has in it the eraser of sins. Because the Prophet (ﷺ) mentioned the eraser of sins.

**[7:45]** It has in it the multiplication of good deeds, and you seek the multiplication of good deeds. It has in it the salam of the mala'ika upon you, because in fact, Jibreel (عليه السلام), the angel, sends salam upon the one who sends salam on the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ).

**[8:01]** And greater than all of that, Allah ﷻ sends his peace upon those that send peace upon the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ). So you have Laylatul Jum'ah, the admonition to make plentiful the salawat on the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ).

**[8:17]** So do that, because it's Laylatul Jum'ah. And bi'idhnillahi ta'ala you would hope that because you're in the last ten nights, the blessed nights, then you have those deeds being even more multiplied. I tell everyone, subhanAllah, when it comes to how you pursue these last ten nights,

**[8:32]** the basics, pray Isha and Fajr and Jama'ah. The narration of Sa'id Musayyib that whoever prays Isha and Jama'ah has taken their haq, has taken their share of Laylatul Qadr. Because the Prophet (ﷺ) said, whoever prays Isha and Jama'ah, it's as if they've prayed the first half of the night.

**[8:50]** Whoever prays Fajr and Jama'ah, it's as if they've prayed the second half of the night. So does anything change about Friday? Well, an added blessing, an added virtue. The Prophet (ﷺ) said that the best salah of the week is what? Salatul Fajr and Jama'ah on Friday.

**[9:08]** So bi'idhnillahi ta'ala you pray Fajr and Jama'ah as we come into the morning of Friday, then you're praying the best prayer of the week. And bi'idhnillahi ta'ala after having spent a night in ibadah to Allah ﷻ.

**[9:24]** So Laylatul Jumu'ah is a blessed night. All of the last ten nights are blessed nights. Any one of them could be Laylatul Qadr. And if it's not Laylatul Qadr, then it's the second best thing. See, it's not like it's Laylatul Qadr or best.

**[9:41]** It's Laylatul Qadr and then the other best nights of the year that come second to the actual Laylatul Qadr. So you have these blessings that are being poured upon you to pursue Allah ﷻ. So Ibn Rajab (رحمه الله), he speaks from this principle.

**[9:57]** So you'll find a quote from him, for example, if the day of Arafah falls on a day of Monday or Thursday, compounded blessings because a day of fasting and a day of fasting and it's hope from Allah ﷻ, extra reward. I'm going to say there is no explicit evidence to what he's saying here.

**[10:12]** Rahimahullah ta'ala. And there is no reason why you should say, all right, so tonight's the night. So after tonight, we got it. Odd night, Friday night, that must have been it. So we can chill for the rest of the nights. Absolutely not. But what you can do is understand when Allah ﷻ

**[10:29]** gives you multiple blessings upon each other. And by the way, I only gave you a few share of the examples. Like Ibn Mas'ud (رضي الله عنه) mentioned, the last hour of the day is the best time for adhkar and the last hour of the day in Arafah is the best time for adhkar, right? I'm only giving you a few examples in this regard.

**[10:45]** The point is, dear brothers and sisters, you are right now in the best night of the week for sure. The best day of the week is Friday, the best night of the week is Friday. You're in the best night of the week, potentially also the best night of the year combined all in one.

**[11:02]** Allah knows best. But strive, strive, strive. And here's what I want you to do, by the way. Every single night, I want you to, just as you're starting to get complacent, remind yourself of why this could be Laylatul Qadr.

**[11:20]** And at the end of the day, the baseline is that it's one of the last ten nights, odd or even, because we don't necessarily know the even from the odd when it's all said and done. Odd or even, give yourself that extra push, bi'idhnillahi ta'ala. And so tonight, the first of the last ten.

**[11:37]** Here's a very important message that I want you to understand as well. You had Sha'ban to prepare for Ramadan. You had the first 20 days of Ramadan to prepare for the last ten of Ramadan. There is no like a warm-up lap in these ten.

**[11:54]** Go hard right away. Go hard right away. There is no getting into the mood and starting to adjust. There's no adjustment period now. Just go as much as you can. Push yourself. Exert yourself starting now.

**[12:09]** Don't wait until you start to get in the mood and start to absorb the sentiment of the last ten nights. Push yourself. May Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala allow us to catch Laylatul Qadr. Whatever night it is, may Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala allow the best nights of the year to be these nights of the year for us.

**[12:24]** May Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala give us the best reward. And may Allah forgive us for any shortcomings and protect us from anything that would cause us to be deprived of it. Allahumma ameen. BarakAllahu feekum. Wassalamualaikum warahmatullahi wabarakatuh.

**[12:44]** Al-Fatiha.
