## Summary
In this Juz 9 episode of Quran 30 for 30, Dr. Haifaa Younis joins the hosts to reflect on key themes from Surah Al-A'raf, Surah Al-Anfal, and the beginning of Surah At-Tawbah. The discussion opens with a personal reflection on the Turkey-Syria earthquake, emphasizing the resilience of the victims and the spiritual value of humanitarian travel. The hosts highlight several pivotal verses from this juz, including Allah's declaration that His mercy encompasses all things [Al-A'raf 7:156], the command to call upon Allah by His beautiful names [Al-A'raf 7:180], and the reminder that victory belongs solely to Allah [Al-Anfal 8:10]. Dr. Younis offers a deep reflection on the verses describing the true believer in Surah Al-Anfal [8:2-4], explaining that genuine iman begins internally — with the heart trembling at the mention of Allah, faith increasing upon hearing His verses, and complete reliance on Him — before manifesting externally through salah and charity. The conversation also explores the profound verse 'You did not throw when you threw, but it was Allah who threw' [Al-Anfal 8:17], connecting the miracle of Badr to personal struggles in everyday life. The episode concludes with a rich discussion on the final verse of the juz, 'What an excellent Protector and what an excellent Helper' [Al-Anfal 8:40], with Dr. Younis unpacking the name Al-Mawla to mean not just protector, but lover, caretaker, and the one who never lets you down. The scholars encourage viewers to incorporate Allah's names into their du'a as the most effective way to memorize and internalize them.

## Key Points
- Allah's mercy encompasses all things, but a special mercy is written for those who are mindful of Him (Al-A'raf 7:156), showing that Ramadan's blessings are amplified for those who strive in worship.
- The best way to memorize Allah's beautiful names is to actively incorporate them into your du'a, connecting each name to a specific need or situation in your life.
- The verse 'You did not throw when you threw, but it was Allah who threw' (Al-Anfal 8:17) teaches that while humans must take the means (asbab), ultimate agency and power belong to Allah alone.
- The true believer, as described in Al-Anfal 8:2-4, is defined by five internal and external qualities: heart trembling at Allah's mention, faith increasing upon hearing His verses, complete reliance on Allah, establishing salah, and spending in charity.
- Fulfilling these five qualities of true belief earns the believer levels (darajat) with their Lord, forgiveness, and generous sustenance (rizq karim) in the Hereafter.
- The name Al-Mawla encompasses far more than 'protector' — it includes being a lover, caretaker of all affairs, and one who will never let you down, making Allah the only true source of support.
- The Battle of Badr is a timeless lesson: Allah can make overwhelming obstacles appear small to the believer, and this principle applies to personal struggles, not just physical battles.
- When people or circumstances disappoint us or turn away, it is often Allah's way of redirecting us back to Him as our true Mawla and Nasir (helper).
- Visiting disaster zones and humanitarian sites is spiritually transformative — it softens the heart, builds gratitude, and provides perspective on Allah's blessings.
- Surah At-Tawbah, the last surah revealed in full, serves as a warning to hypocrites and a call to return to Allah, rounding out the themes of accountability and divine mercy in this section of the Quran.

## Transcript
**[0:05]** Imagine Allah saying about Himself, "What a Wali I am." How can you not know that there is no better one, that you seek protection, seek love, seek taking affairs from other than Allah? To Allah belong the most beautiful of names, so call upon Him by those names.

**[0:21]** And you're not going to remember any of these names unless you incorporate them in du'a. True. There's a level of disappointment that you may have had in that person because you had a certain expectation, but that can serve as a means for you to turn more to Allah سبحانه وتعالى. Allah is the one that has your back.

**[0:43]** السلام عليكم ورحمة الله وبركاته everyone. Welcome back to Quran 30 for 30. الحمد لله رب العالمين. We are in Juz 9. We are now going into the middle 10 days of Ramadan, where people tend to lose their steam, and we're here to remind you it's still Ramadan, إن شاء الله تعالى. We're still going through the Quran. We always see

**[1:00]** the drop-off in the Ramadan series, and everything kind of tapers off. So make this Ramadan different from your previous Ramadans, إن شاء الله تعالى. Keep the steam going. And one of the ways that you can discipline yourself, إن شاء الله, to keep the steam going is to use these various markers so that you're not falling off, right? These

**[1:15]** are consistent things that are coming out. Your own personal reading of the Quran. Read your juz every day, or whatever it is that you have as your wird. But do not lose that steam and that momentum بإذن الله تعالى. And to help you not lose that momentum, الحمد لله we have with us today Dr. Haifa Younis, الحمد لله

**[1:33]** who, الحمد لله، obviously runs Jannah Institute, is a part of Yaqeen Institute, is — even if she doesn't claim it, يعني we claim you, so we claim you as part of Yaqeen. But more than that, الحمد لله we benefit from you, الحمد لله and that's what we mean by that, الحمد لله and we are blessed

**[1:50]** to be touched by your wisdom, الحمد لله رب العالمين to see the amount of people, especially sisters, that are growing under you, الحمد لله رب العالمين. I mean, I can't tell you how many sisters that I've personally heard from who are on the spectrum from new Muslims to people

**[2:08]** that have been Muslim their whole life that have benefited from you. May Allah bless you, and may Allah increase you, and may Allah Azza wa Jalla make you a light of the Quran to the world بإذن الله تعالى. Jazakumullah Khairan for joining us. Alhamdulillah. Jazakillah Khair for having me. It's always a pleasure to be

**[2:23]** back. I know, subhanAllah, you two actually went to Syria, Turkey together? Turkey. Turkey when the earthquake happened. You know, subhanAllah, when I think about that, the Turkey-Syria earthquake, by the way, was actually part of the inspiration for the Why Me series. Because that's

**[2:41]** pre — like the whole world pre-genocide in Gaza feels so blurry right now, you know? True. But back then it was like, why did this happen? All these people, all these things. Maybe we can actually start from there, insha'Allah ta'ala. Like, what was an experience that stayed with you? How many years ago was that now? Actually, three years,

**[2:58]** two months ago. Like March, February 2022. Am I correct? Yes. So what's a memory that stays with you, both from that trip to visit the earthquake victims? SubhanAllah, I mean, for me it's just

**[3:13]** the resilience of the people. Remember when we went to that tent with the children? Oh, man, that was the resilience of the people, that all of this has taken place and they're still smiling. They're very thankful that we've come there to see how they're doing. I think the main word is resilience for me. The same

**[3:31]** answer to a question I ask so many people: how did it feel? Now remember, the earthquake happened at the border between Syria and Turkey, and there was a lot of the Syrian refugees, so they were speaking Arabic. And I asked so many people, it's the same answer: 4:25, we were sleeping.

**[3:50]** We heard a voice and everyone said, "Ooh," and we thought it's the Day of Judgment. And then the shake, the shake, the shake. Everyone is the same. And every time they answer, it comes to my mind إذا زلزلت الأرض زلزالها when the earth will

**[4:08]** shake, it's shake. And to me, it was one of the, of course, nothing like Gaza, but it was before that. It was one of the trips that really affected me. The destruction was devastating, سبحان الله. I wish people would

**[4:24]** spend more time going on these trips. And not like in a cheap, like what they call voluntourism, like go take selfies with refugees. Not in a cheap way. Go put your phone away, meet people, soften your heart. If people can afford to take trips to go on vacation,

**[4:41]** there's nothing more beautiful than maybe if Allah Azza wa Jalla facilitates Umrah for you or something like that. Just take a detour to Jordan maybe, or to Syria now. الحمد لله you can go to Syria maybe directly now, or Turkey, work with some of the refugees that are there, work with some of the victims. But this is so good for your heart. It gives so much

**[4:58]** perspective. Take your children also. Let them see the نعمة, the blessings Allah gave them, and what other people are going through. It changes human beings. سبحان الله, I love going on these trips, actually, to be honest with you, for me. Yeah, yeah, absolutely. Actually,

**[5:15]** Shaykh Abdullah, you went to Morocco. Earthquake victims there, right? Yes. I know what they called you, the nickname. They nicknamed him أبو العضلات. Oh, you did? But we didn't go together. No, I went there too. Yeah, too. Oh, subhanAllah. So the children called him أبو العضلات, the father of the muscles. Abu Muscle, you know, masha'Allah.

**[5:33]** But I saw the videos of you playing with the children out there too, masha'Allah. May Allah reward you both for your trips there. آمين يا رب لك الحمد. Dr. Haifa, before we get started on the Juz as well, insha'Allah, just a quick question: what's your favorite name of Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala at this moment? Oh,

**[5:48]** إِنَّ رَبِّي رَحِيمٌ وَدُودٌ I love this verse, subhanAllah. It's Rahim, okay, but Wadud — سبحان الله you know, like يتودد إلى عباده like He does things so we love Him. سبحان الله Yeah, subhanAllah.

**[6:05]** Rahim, Wadud, masha'Allah. طيب، الحمد لله، that actually fits perfectly with the way we introduce this Juz, insha'Allah ta'ala. We're in Juz 9, and some of the main verses actually that frame the Ramadan series this

**[6:20]** year and beyond come from this Juz. So, for example, when Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala says, وَرَحْمَتِي وَرَحْمَتِي وَسِعَتْ كُلَّ شَيْءٍ that "Verily, My mercy encompasses all things." فَسَأَكْتُبُهَا لِلَّذِينَ يَتَّقُونَ "but I will write it, I will ordain it for those who are mindful of Me," which

**[6:37]** shows us that there's a mercy that encompasses all things, but then there's a special mercy that Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala writes down for the believers. So Allah Azza wa Jalla introduces Himself in this Juz as the possessor of infinite mercy, but at the same time, He links His mercy to righteousness as well, right, to piety as well. And

**[6:55]** of course, كُتِبَ عَلَيْكُمُ الصِّيَامُ كَمَا كُتِبَ عَلَى الَّذِينَ مِن قَبْلِكُمْ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَتَّقُونَ the point of fasting is that you gain taqwa, piety. And this is the month of mercy, right, where rahma descends in accordance with all of those good deeds and all of that istighfar, all of that seeking forgiveness that is taking place within this month. The

**[7:13]** rahma descends upon all of us. May Allah Azza wa Jalla make us amongst its recipients. اللهم آمين. So Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala mentions the expansiveness of His mercy, but then He mentions as well the special manifestations of His mercy that belong to a select few. And sometimes

**[7:28]** giving a practical example helps people here, that in Ramadan there's no way that the person that's fasting and the person that's exerting themselves is going to receive the same amount of mercy as a person who is disobeying Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala in this month, right? But they are all operating under the mercy of

**[7:43]** Allah Azza wa Jalla. وَرَحْمَتِي وَسِعَتْ كُلَّ شَيْءٍ. Also, in this Juz, وَلِلَّهِ الْأَسْمَاءُ الْحُسْنَىٰ فَادْعُوهُ بِهَا to Allah belong the most beautiful of names, so call upon Him by those names. The point of knowing these names is to know these different dimensions of Allah Azza wa Jalla so

**[8:00]** that you can use them in your du'a. And you're not going to remember any of these names unless you incorporate them in du'a. So I remind everyone, you know, as we're going through the names of Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala this Ramadan, incorporate these names in your du'a. That'll be a means of حفظ, a means

**[8:15]** of memorizing, protecting these names, guarding these names and their understandings, insha'Allah ta'ala, in your life. And so Allah Azza wa Jalla speaks to us as the One who teaches us how to know Him, and Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala grounds us in His names so that we understand that every du'a

**[8:33]** should be made with one of His names, or more than one of His names. Every victory comes as a manifestation of one of those names, and every moment that we make of repentance is going to connect us to those names بإذن الله تعالى. Now, the part that you also see here is Allah Azza wa Jalla

**[8:48]** speaks of Himself as the protector and the helper of the believers. So in this juz, you find وَمَا النَّصْرُ إِلَّا مِنْ عِندِ اللَّهِ إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَزِيزٌ حَكِيمٌ that victory is only from Allah. Indeed, Allah is exalted in might

**[9:03]** and all-wise. So when Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala pairs off in this particular thing, in this particular verse, His might and His wisdom and the decisiveness, it's deeply powerful. And what we find as well, and this is the last verse that I'll mention

**[9:19]** sort of in the overview that I see, one of my favorite verses, and it's a portion of the verse, is where Allah Azza wa Jalla says, وَمَا رَمَيْتَ إِذْ رَمَيْتَ وَلَٰكِنَّ اللَّهَ رَمَىٰ what a powerful, powerful verse. You did not throw when you threw. Rather,

**[9:35]** it was Allah Azza wa Jalla that was throwing. You shot your arrows. You moved forward. Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala does not just overcome the enemy. Allah Azza wa Jalla enables every motion of yours. And Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala is with you in the deepest and most intimate sense. And subhanAllah,

**[9:52]** like you think of the precision. Like the numbers, by the way, you know, if you were a Muslim in Badr, right, and you saw what happened in Badr, you had no doubt this was a miracle. For one, the presence of the angels, obviously, right, the obvious presence of the angels, right, where

**[10:09]** the Muslims mentioned that they would see like their enemies charging at them and then something just takes them and, you know, hearing the sounds in the sky, right, أَقْبِلْ حَيْزُومُ, right, like the sound of the angels being called upon. The Prophet (ﷺ) saying, Jibril عليه السلام just arrived with his angels. Like you felt them

**[10:25]** in every way. Even the enemies felt the angels striking them from place to place. But like I actually want people to like think about the visual here. The visual is you had a bunch of Muslims with two horses, and they were not equipped for a large battle. They had just the basic rudimentary weapons that you would take

**[10:40]** like on these journeys, right? And they're facing an army three times its size that's horsed out. You know, they have horses all across, camels all across, full armor and the best weaponry for a full-out battle. And they beat them.

**[10:56]** Like, and that's the first decisive battle in Islam. Yeah, subhanAllah. If you were coming from Badr back to Medina, you're like, there is no doubt, إِنَّ اللَّهَ مَعَنَا Allah is with us, and Allah Azza wa Jalla is the One who is making this happen. So the reassurance, and this, of course, comes in Surah Al-Anfal, this

**[11:13]** reassurance. And Surah Al-Anfal, of course, sort of summarizes this long section of surahs where you have some of the battles that are being brought back up, but also a reminder. It's almost like a summary of all of them through and through. And then you come to At-Tawbah,

**[11:28]** which is the last surah that was revealed in its full, which is a warning to the hypocrites and a call to them to come back to Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala. So this is kind of the overview. And there's a specific verse I want to get to, but I'll stop for that, insha'Allah. I'll stop now here. Shaykh Abdullah and Dr. Haifa, I would love to just hear your

**[11:45]** thoughts, insha'Allah. You know, Surah Al-Anfal, I mean, talking about war and talking about, you know, different factions against the Muslims and how the Muslims respond, it's beautiful because I'll never forget one time I was talking to a doctor a long time ago. He said, you know, I love everything about Islam, but you know, in your book, it talks about war. It talks

**[12:01]** about this. I said, well, it covers every aspect of life, and this is a reality, the war within and the war even externally, right? So this is a human reality. Throughout history, we know that it takes place. But within Islam, what's so beautiful about it is that it always comes, well, always starts initially at your connection with

**[12:17]** Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala. From that being that Allah is really in control of all things, but you still have a responsibility. وَمَا رَمَيْتَ إِذْ رَمَيْتَ. You still had to do ramy, you still had to take the asbab, you still had to take the means. But Allah is ultimately in control because, especially in this time frame, in this

**[12:34]** event where you're going to use your physical exertion, sometimes you can think that, okay, I have it under control or it's because of my strength ultimately and even initially. But with Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala in the beginning and in the end, it is totally up to Him. And that's what's so beautiful because when Allah

**[12:49]** Subhanahu wa Ta'ala speaks about this, He's also giving us the foundation throughout this aspect of life that some of you as Muslims may face and many of you may not. So when you're going through this, you realize that Allah is ultimately in control to the degree

**[13:05]** that the unseen forces, and I use this word very intentionally, will help you — them being the mala'ikah. So I think that is a very important reminder for us in regards to tawakkul, trusting in Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala that has ultimate control over all things within this

**[13:21]** as well. You still have that responsibility to do what is within your capabilities. And Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala is An-Nasir, and He's the One that assists us. SubhanAllah, I look at it completely different. There are two verses. Again, if we're talking about Surah Al-Anfal, which is part of the juz', the part nine, is

**[13:38]** when Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala starts يَسْأَلُونَكَ عَنِ الْأَنفَالِ they ask you about the booties. There's no answer, right? The answer comes later. But then He goes into إِنَّمَا الْمُؤْمِنُونَ and I want everybody, especially in Ramadan, literally

**[13:54]** expose yourself to this verse. It's two verses, actually. And then say, is it me? So what He says, إِنَّمَا الْمُؤْمِنُونَ verily the believers إِذَا ذُكِرَ اللَّهُ وَجِلَتْ قُلُوبُهُمْ when Allah is being mentioned, their hearts وَجِلَتْ tremble, not only of fear,

**[14:10]** fear of love, of overjoy, overfear — emotions. الوجل in Arabic language is way deeper than خَوْفٌ. طيب، ذُكِرَ اللَّهُ وَجِلَتْ قُلُوبُهُمْ تُلِيَتْ عَلَيْهِمْ آيَاتُهُ. We're in Ramadan. We're listening to Quran.

**[14:26]** We're in tarawih. We are reading. What happens to our heart? What happens to us? تُلِيَتْ عَلَيْهِمْ آيَاتُهُ when His verses are being revealed or being recited to them, زَادَتْهُمْ إِيمَانًا my iman has to be stronger in even

**[14:42]** a small fraction. طيب، زَادَتْهُمْ إِيمَانًا وَعَلَى رَبِّهِمْ يَتَوَكَّلُونَ and they rely totally on Allah. Scholars will tell you this is all internal responses. It's not an external. So the true believer is internally first, and then the external comes

**[14:59]** after in the next one. So what happens to me? I ask myself, when I hear the name of Allah, when I hear the verses of Allah, when I am tested in, as you just said beautifully, rely on Him, whether in war, whether in exam, whether in any decision, then comes يُقِيمُونَ

**[15:17]** الصَّلَاةَ وَمِمَّا رَزَقْنَاهُمْ يُنفِقُونَ it's not only internal because you hear it. Many people tell you, iman in my heart, absolutely, but not all of it. Then you have to perform salah. Then you have to spend from your money. Then the third one, أُولَٰئِكَ هُمُ الْمُؤْمِنُونَ حَقًّا you fulfill five criteria. You're the

**[15:35]** true believer. And then in this one, different than the last because at the end it's a very similar verse but a little bit shorter, أُولَٰئِكَ هُمُ الْمُؤْمِنُونَ حَقًّا those who fulfill these five things, the true believer, what am I going to get, يَا رَبِّي؟ لَهُمْ دَرَجَاتٌ

**[15:50]** عِندَ رَبِّهِمْ is one of the few ones where Allah did not mention Jannah yet. You have levels. Which level do you want to be? I always ask people, especially when they talk about Jannah, it's 100. It's 100 levels between every level is مَا بَيْنَ السَّمَاءِ وَالْأَرْضِ the distance between heavens and earth. Where do

**[16:09]** you want to be? At the door? Second or 100? أُولَٰئِكَ هُمُ الْمُؤْمِنُونَ حَقًّا لَّهُمْ دَرَجَاتٌ عِندَ رَبِّهِمْ levels. Ask yourself, where do you want to be at the end of Ramadan? وَمَغْفِرَةٌ and then you have the رِزْقٌ كَرِيمٌ and He didn't say أجر here. رِزْقٌ when

**[16:27]** the generous gives you, what is He going to give me? رِزْقٌ كَرِيمٌ generous sustenance in Akhirah, not in Dunya. And at the end, after the war, after the booties and everything, it goes back again, أُولَئِكَ هُمُ الْمُؤْمِنُونَ حَقًّا there are no درجات here.

**[16:43]** لَهُمْ مَغْفِرَةٌ وَرِزْقٌ كَرِيمٌ SubhanAllah, these two, literally the beginning and the end and in between comes وَمَا رَمَيْتَ إِذْ رَمَيْتَ comes in about the booties, comes in when you face them because He describes the numbers, right? يُرِيكَهُمُ اللَّهُ فِي مَنَامِكَ قَلِيلًا

**[17:01]** He — Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala — made the Rasul عليه الصلاة والسلام see the numbers small so they are not scared. And He made the Sahaba, in the verse after, made the Sahaba see them as small so they don't get scared and made the disbelievers see the Sahaba small so they belittle them. SubhanAllah, SubhanAllah, it's

**[17:19]** amazing. It's a beautiful way. If you're going to ask me, what do I learn? I'm not in Badr these days. You know what? Are you a true believer? A question. How do I get there? And then when I face something that normally everybody will be scared of, He can

**[17:34]** make it very easy for me. سبحانه. So SubhanAllah. الله يبارك فيكم. Those are beautiful reflections. جزاكم الله خيرا. And you know, obviously, Juz 10 is where, you know, you have At-Tawbah, and At-Tawbah gives a very different dimension. And this is kind of in the middle of Al-Anfal, right? You

**[17:50]** go from Al-A'raf to Al-Anfal. And this idea of Allah عز وجل being the source of victory and also the source of all elevation, right? So you're talking about a personal level, like there's personal victories. And I think that if you see the obstacles as many, then you'll never grow, right? So

**[18:06]** you should see your obstacles as little. And sometimes Allah سبحانه وتعالى will show you that it's not that hard for you. You can get there. You can get there. Like the Sahaba had to have an, you know, an unbelievable amount of audacity to believe that they could get to where they actually got to by the grace of Allah سبحانه وتعالى. So it's not

**[18:22]** just conquering the enemy. Sometimes it's conquering the obstacle. This is a beautiful discussion, Shaykh. I don't know if you have a comment on that before I ask Dr. Haifa about the verse because it's just like you see an obstacle as small and it's like it seems so big, but with the power of Allah عز وجل, yeah, I can do that. Like even

**[18:38]** like someone who becomes Muslim first Ramadan, right? Like, yeah, "I'm going to fast all that," you know, like there's no way. But Allah عز وجل causes you to see it. So I'm not sure if you have any thoughts about that. No, it's that iman. I mean, it's that real trust in Allah سبحانه وتعالى and really understanding His beauty and His

**[18:55]** capabilities, if you will, and how He can, if He has the capabilities, He's so grand, He can easily put that within me. But it's upon me to trust Him and to know Him and to love Him and to rely on Him. And with that reliance, I mean, you can overpower anything or anyone, you know? So that's what's so beautiful about it. I

**[19:11]** think if I can add one thing for the general people because they will say, like, how do I do that? You know what? Just give in. That's what I tell to myself. Just give in. Just say, He'll take care of me. Say it and believe what you are saying. Don't say how. How is not my job. He can do it, but just

**[19:27]** give in to Allah and don't see it. Say to yourself, there's nothing impossible for Allah. Badr is the biggest example for us, but there is, we have seen so many Badrs these days, even on a personal level. Things you say, you know, I will never lose weight. I will never be able to exercise daily.

**[19:43]** But then you rely on Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala. Take the means, but He will make it happen when He sees you're doing it for His sake and sincerely. لا إله إلا هو سبحانه. That's an amazing thought. What does your personal Badr look like? Your personal khandaq, your personal Hudaybiyyah. Exactly.

**[20:00]** وَمَا رَمَيْتَ إِذْ رَمَيْتَ What did you do? So let me ask you this, Dr. Haifa, like one particular verse, and I think it might be the last verse in the Juz. فَإِن تَوَلَّوْا فَاعْلَمُوا أَنَّ اللَّهَ مَوْلَاكُمْ ۚ نِعْمَ الْمَوْلَىٰ وَنِعْمَ النَّصِيرُ If they turn away, then know that Allah Azza wa Jalla is

**[20:15]** your Mawla, your protector. نِعْمَ الْمَوْلَىٰ وَنِعْمَ النَّصِيرُ What an amazing protector and what an amazing helper He is. So this ayah, as it's reminding us that in every struggle, true protection, victory comes from Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala. What's the wisdom of these names in this context? يعني سبحان الله It's amazing. Every time

**[20:33]** you finish this, it's like you just take a breath and say, "Alhamdulillah, Allah is my Lord." This is how I say, "Alhamdulillah." Now He said نِعْمَ, and then He said الْمَوْلَىٰ, and then النَّصِيرُ. You go to the Mawla. What is الْمَوْلَىٰ? It's loosely — I mean, to translate

**[20:49]** an Arabic word to one word of English doesn't give it its due right. It's not only the protector. Definitely, it's a protector, but there's way more. You know, one of the meanings of it is the lover. One of the meanings is the one who takes care of all your affairs. One of the meanings of it is He will not let you down, right? Al-Wali, the origin

**[21:08]** of it is Al-Wali. Like the woman, when she gets married, right, you have a wali. What is Al-Wali? The person who's going to take care of her affair, and He's going to make sure this marriage contract is in the best interest of her. That's Allah. And then He said in Ash-Shuraa, أَمِ اتَّخَذُوا مِن دُونِهِ أَوْلِيَاءَ They took

**[21:24]** another wali, another protector, another one who takes care of them. فَاللَّهُ هُوَ الْوَلِيُّ right? وَهُوَ يُحْيِي الْمَوْتَىٰ وَهُوَ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ I think looking at the names of Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala, not just the name and not, you know, many of us put

**[21:40]** them in our homes, looking at them. Maybe you want to memorize them because of the hadith, مَنْ أَحْصَاهَا فَقَدْ دَخَلَ الْجَنَّةَ if they really know them, you go to Jannah. But if you look at it in detail and say, "Where is Al-Wali in my life? And where do I need Al-Wali in my life?" I will answer

**[21:58]** personally. I need Him in every breath in me. I need Him to love me. I need Him to protect me. I need Him to take care of me, right? When I am, when I feel I'm so low, I have no energy, I have no ability to fight anymore.

**[22:13]** We all go through this. On a personal level, I'm talking about, leave it. He's my wali. Turn to Him and say, "Ya Rabbi, You take care of me. I can't do this anymore." And then He said, "Ni'm." Yani, where the word نِعْمَ in the Quran came in? Whenever Allah is describing somebody, the best description,

**[22:30]** نِعْمَ الْعَبْدُ ۖ إِنَّهُ أَوَّابٌ when He describes Sayyidna Ayyub (عليه السلام), what a servant of Mine He is. So imagine Allah saying about Himself, Subhanah, beyond me, honestly, beyond me. He's saying, what a Wali I am, meaning, اعْلَمُوا

**[22:48]** by the way, and He said, "اعْلَمُوا," you better know. Or how can you not know that there is no better one? That you seek protection, seek love, seek taking affairs from other than Allah? Why are you suffering? That's what I say to myself, why are you

**[23:04]** looking for others? You look for others as a means, as just you said it beautifully, but it is not the goal. And I don't have the belief they will do it. I have the belief He will send someone to do it, but He is the one. وَنِعْمَ النَّصِيرُ by the way, one of the meanings

**[23:20]** of Al-Wali هُوَ النَّصِيرُ is the one who gives you victory. Also one of the names of it, but He doubled it. He re-emphasized it, which is the very common theme in the Quran that Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala sometimes uses the same meaning, but in a different way,

**[23:36]** even sometimes the same verses. Those who have memorized the Quran, you know, one of the biggest challenges we have is the الْمُتَشَابِهَاتُ. Very close. Sometimes very close, but there's just one letter or one word, and you wonder, يا ربي and then when you dig deep into it, you

**[23:51]** know there is وَنِعْمَ النَّصِيرُ you're looking for a victory, victory on a personal level, victory in job, victory in marriage, victory in Dunya, let alone victory in الْآخِرَةِ. Where do I go? The source. وَنِعْمَ النَّصِيرُ

**[24:07]** الْوَلِيُّ. Meaning He owns it. He's the only one who can give it. He's the only one who can take it. Why do you go somewhere else? سبحان الله It's beautiful, beautiful. And then the end of this Juz is this, and then He answers the first question, right?

**[24:24]** وَاعْلَمُوا أَنَّمَا غَنِمْتُمْ مِنْ شَيْءٍ So the Surah Al-Anfal starts by a question. There's no answer because the answer is not the issue. It's who's going to give you the bounties, right? And who's going to tell you what to do with it? And unless you know who He is, you're not going to know the answer or you're

**[24:40]** not going to follow the answer. SubhanAllah, I wish everybody in this day and age where, may Allah forgive me for saying this, but I feel it personally when I feel my wali is my job, when I feel my wali is my bank account, when I feel my nasir

**[24:55]** is the people around me, and then He shows me sometimes in the hard way that they are not the نِعْمَ الْمَوْلَىٰ وَنِعْمَ النَّصِيرُ — they are not what a great protector or the person who gives me victory. And I think if everybody learned this, especially in the day of I and me,

**[25:13]** our life will be much easier. Absolutely. One thing about this verse is beautiful. Allah سبحانه وتعالى uses the same letters for فَإِنْ تَوَلَّوْا right? تَوَلَّوْا if they turn their backs, it's important for you to know that Allah is the one that, for lack of better words, has your back initially, ultimately. So there may be

**[25:31]** people that turn their backs on you. I mean, if we generalize it, but know that Allah سبحانه وتعالى is the one that enabled them to do that for حِكْمَةٍ بَالِغَةٍ for a divine wisdom. And are you going to rely on the one that said He's always there for you? Are you going to voluntarily turn to Him? Initially, the إنابة in your heart, turning to Him with

**[25:47]** your heart if you've made a mistake, not even physically, but in your way of thinking that was consistent about a particular thing, about a job, about a person, you continuously rely on it. But when it's taken away from you, that is when you have a choice. That is when the fitnah starts. That is when it gets very hot, figuratively speaking. How are you going to allow that

**[26:04]** to mold you when things cool down? How are you going to cool down in this particular situation, knowing that Allah is your Mawla? He's always been there, and He's just waiting for you to turn back to Him in this beautiful month of Ramadan. Within the system of Islam, He gives you one month to focus, to think,

**[26:21]** to ponder, and realize who is the one that really wants best for you, has the ability to do whatever He wills for you. And how are you going to turn back? Are you going to turn back to Him initially? And when you turn back, how intense is it? Because when you realize that person that I relied on,

**[26:38]** and sometimes it can be family members, especially for those that convert to Islam, or those that try to come back to the religion, and they realize the people that raised them do not want them to try to be their best, be a good Muslim, you realize there's a level of disappointment that you may have had in that person because you had a certain expectation. But that can

**[26:57]** serve as a means for you to turn more to Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala. And that is where khalwah really comes in, being alone with Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala, being alone with your thoughts, and going through that process of realizing, SubhanAllah, my faculties, everything that I have, everything that I've had and will have, Allah

**[27:14]** Subhanahu wa Ta'ala is there, was there, and will always be there, and He will always support me because I'm the one that initially has that belief in Him. And when He decides, when He, not me, not all of us, when He decides to assist, that is when He will assist in the best way possible. SubhanAllah.

**[27:32]** And the best way possible, we may not know today, but we will know years down the line. We're reading about His nasr in history. We're reading about it. And in these times now, SubhanAllah, there are people that have done tawalla, whether it's individually or

**[27:48]** collectively, but we know that Allah is the Mawla, and that's where it brings a level of sakinah for those that are facing it and for those that are watching it and seeing it, to rely on the One that Subhanahu wa Ta'ala in these particular times and in times that we've read about before and times that will happen in the future, having understanding this

**[28:05]** name and its manifestation is that which can bring a level of sakinah and tranquility in the heart. And if I want to add, which you said it beautifully, sometimes Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala makes people turn away from us. Sometimes Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala allows people to disappoint us.

**[28:21]** You know why? So we know He's نِعْمَ الْمَوْلَىٰ وَنِعْمَ النَّصِيرُ. It's sometimes we get busy with everything around us and we think, "They will help me or this material or human being," but then He decides He's taking them away or He makes me go through a test or a trial. And the lucky one,

**[28:39]** I say this to myself, the lucky one, the fortunate one is the one who figures out that everything that I felt I can rely on can disappear in a minute except Him سبحانه، الباقي، الحي، all the names, the everlasting, the ever-living. And sometimes when He loves me

**[28:57]** and He really wants me back, sometimes it's in the hard way, unfortunately. But this is how it is, SubhanAllah. SubhanAllah, the last thing that I would share here, as I'm listening to both of you reflect on this portion, you know, one of the ways that Allah Azza wa Jalla prophesied Badr: سَيُهْزَمُ الْجَمْعُ

**[29:15]** وَيُوَلُّونَ الدُّبُرَ. That they will one day turn away. They will be defeated and they will turn away. And Allah Azza wa Jalla gave the visual before the battle, and that was years before the battle, right? Years before the battle where Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala actually revealed. And that's when the Sahaba understood, "Oh, this is what

**[29:31]** Allah was talking about when they saw the visual of them turning away," right? And so here's the thing, you know, it's really interesting because people talk about like, "You manifested and bring it into reality," like manifest it, like you don't manifest anything. Like you

**[29:46]** affirm your belief in Allah Azza wa Jalla, and Allah Azza wa Jalla manifests that eventual victory. May Allah Azza wa Jalla grant that victory, full victory to our brothers and sisters in Palestine, in Sudan, all over the world. Allahumma Ameen. جزاك الله خيرا Dr. Haifa for being part of this, as always, all the wise insights.

**[30:03]** والسلام عليكم ورحمة الله وبركاته.
