## Description
The end of Ramadan is a time to redouble your efforts. Pray more, fast more—give more. Why do some people stay firm in faith while others crumble in hardship? Allah has given us guidance for both good days and bad—but without taqwa, our desires can blur reality. The more you know Allah through His...

**[0:05]** The more you try to do that which is pleasing to Allah, the more you figure out what the best possible version of yourself actually is. Allah is involved in your struggles. Allah cares about those who are on the Haqq. Allah has given us a framework, a system for our souls and the implementation of that system

**[0:25]** is that which rejuvenates, aligns and refines the soul and purifies it as well. As-salamu alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh everyone. Welcome back to Qur'an 30 for 30.

**[0:41]** Alhamdulillah we are in Juz 28 and as we are in these last 10 nights, a reminder bi'idhnillah, especially in these last few nights to please go strong bi'idhnillah. We hope that you've enjoyed everything that we have been putting out in Ramadan and beyond and that you invest in this work inshallah ta'ala. So even if you've given, please do give again. Make

**[0:58]** use of these last 10 nights. Every single one of them counts bi'idhnillah ta'ala and especially in these last few precious nights inshallah. We remind you to please click on the link, share the link, share the content inshallah ta'ala and get people involved. May Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala bless you all and accept from you. Allahumma ameen.

**[1:14]** Alhamdulillah as we are here with Juz 28, we are honoured to have with us Dr. Ovamir Anjum who served in multiple roles as editor, as research director at Yaqeen. How are you Dr. Ovamir? Alhamdulillah. Alhamdulillah. And Dr. Ovamir masha'Allah has been one of the foremost

**[1:32]** voices on Palestine, especially in the academic domain. He never holds back his pen alhamdulillah so we are grateful to you for always having the courage to write with that courage alhamdulillah and to push the boundaries in good ways and we ask Allah to make that all in sincerity

**[1:52]** and to keep you steadfast. Ameen. May Allah accept. Jazakumullahu khair Dr. Ovamir. So you are in Ohio. That is correct. Toledo. Alhamdulillah. Alright tell us about that place. We are making fun of Shaykh Shinawi with Allentown but you can tell us a little bit about where you live.

**[2:11]** There is plenty to make fun of in Toledo. Alhamdulillah. So you are not even going to try to defend it. Yeah no we call it the pothole capital of the US. But you know it is home and you love your home so alhamdulillah it has been home for the last 15 years for my

**[2:28]** family and it has among the best park systems in the US. Alhamdulillah it is a nice laid back place. I do not have to get stuck in traffic like you guys and I can walk to work.

**[2:44]** The fall is beautiful you know you can see all four seasons so there is a lot to say but it is flat. It is like the flattest place on earth. Well at least you were honest. You know Shaykh Shinawi was trying to talk up Allentown a little bit more than it actually was. I mean you gave a more balanced assessment of your city so we appreciate the honesty.

**[3:03]** Yeah alhamdulillah. So inshallah we are in Juz 28. The lesson that I would like to give today is it is easier to forget yourself than you think it is. It is easier to forget yourself than you think it is. Subhanallah in this

**[3:21]** Juz you have Surat Al-Hashr and you have the most beautiful ayat with the names of Allah and as we are extolling Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala as he should be extolled subhanahu wa ta'ala with each of those names and getting to know him subhanahu wa ta'ala through those

**[3:37]** names we often forget that Allah Azawajal mentions on the same page verse 19 And do not be like those who forgot Allah so He caused them to forget themselves. It

**[3:55]** is indeed they who are amongst the truly rebellious. Now subhanallah there is so much to say here about connecting your sense of purpose to the existence of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala but it is not just connecting your sense of purpose to the existence of Allah. It is also connecting every single element and dimension of your purpose to the names

**[4:15]** and the attributes of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala. The more you know Allah the more you know yourself. The more you try to do that which is pleasing to Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala the more you figure out what the best possible version of yourself actually is. And the only way to really figure out what the best possible version of yourself is to know Allah subhanahu

**[4:33]** wa ta'ala through the names and attributes that he has given of himself. We have emphasized this throughout the Ramadan series this idea of the names of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala and then what are your names? What are your names in the heavens? What are your names amongst the inhabitants of the graves? What do the angels know you as? What are the qualities

**[4:52]** that you have attained? And you have people that are truly like the walking dead that are walking around and don't know why they are here and don't know who they are. It is easier to forget yourself than you think it is. I was thinking about subhanAllah is in Juz 29 the next Juz Surat al-Insan Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala mentions

**[5:09]** هَلْ أَتَى عَلَى الْإِنسَانِ حِينٌ مِنَ الدَّهْرِ لَمْ يَكُن شَيْئًا مَّذْكُورًا Hasn't there come upon you a time when you were not even a thing to be mentioned? Not only did you not have a name you didn't have a definition you were literally non-existent as far as the world was concerned. Whereas Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala Allah azawajal is

**[5:27]** always and was always and will always be هُوَ اللَّهُ الَّذِي لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ عَالِمُ الْغَيْبِ وَالشَّهَادَةِ And you go on and on in the end of Surat al-Hashr. He is Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala. There is no God but Him. The knower of the seen and the unseen. And

**[5:42]** Allah azawajal goes on to extol himself through these beautiful names and these beautiful attributes. A life lesson that I will sort of leave you off with in this regard. It's easier to forget yourself than you think it is. Subhanallah when Allah tells you to remember

**[5:58]** Him every time you do dhikr you're remembering where you came from. You're remembering who brought you here. You remember where you are going. You remember what you're supposed to be doing. And so it grounds you. Dhikr actually grounds you. It doesn't just give you a fortress

**[6:15]** from the Shaytan and a connection to Ar-Rahman. It also grounds you in who you are as an insan. Who you actually are and who you're supposed to be. And a lot of the ahadith of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam where he encourages us to do certain good deeds are about taking

**[6:30]** us back to those moments of vulnerability where we remember who we were and who we've become. So when you're with an orphan and that softens your heart when you caress the head of an orphan, what does that do? It takes you back to a point where you were

**[6:47]** most vulnerable. Where you are seeing someone who doesn't have what you now have. You remember the times that you also did not have. It takes you back. Where you remember your moments in your relationships where you were vulnerable or where you needed someone else's forgiveness and someone forgave you. It takes you back. And so don't forget yourself. And if you forget

**[7:06]** Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala you will inevitably be made to forget yourself. So we ask Allah to make us amongst those who remember Him and in that process of remembering Him, remember who we're supposed to be. Allahumma Ameen. Inshallah ta'ala al-Daktoor Ovamir. I'll pass it off to you. Jazakum Allah khair. Beautiful lesson. I want to talk about Surah Al-Mumtahanah which is

**[7:29]** about one of the most intense surahs in the Quran. In Juz 28 where Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala, the lesson of, the main lesson of the surah is don't befriend the enemies of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala. And the surah begins with a warning and then I'll talk about the

**[7:52]** context of that ayah. But by the time you get to verses 8 and 9, Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala provides further instruction of whom you can befriend, whom you have to be good

**[8:09]** to and kind to. So Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala says

**[8:32]** The main lesson that one learns from this, the ayah says, do not take my enemy and your

**[8:53]** enemy as your friends, as your allies. You reach out to them in love and compassion. When they have given light to what has come to you from the truth.

**[9:13]** They have expelled you and the messenger. Why? Because you believe in Allah. Now in this part, Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala begins by saying my

**[9:30]** enemy and your enemy and subhanAllah that always makes me think that the idea of that Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala is with the believers in their struggles. So Allah doesn't say your enemy, those who are expelling you because they're not hurting Allah

**[9:47]** They cannot hurt Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala. So the people in Gaza and the people in now Lebanon and people in the Muslim world who are being oppressed and there is aggression against them, they should know and we should know that Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala is with them because Allah

**[10:06]** calls their enemy, those who are on the haq, those who are being aggressed against because even though at that time there are other reasons for why there is aggression,

**[10:23]** but the key reason that separated them is Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala affirms the ma'iyya, his ma'iyya. Ma'iyyatullah is something subhanAllah it's you know in the science of suluk the ulama talk about

**[10:39]** of ma'iyya. It's not just the presence of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala. It's in the best way to translate this literally is witness of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala. That Allah is with you. So that Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala as he is saying even though they are really, they do not deserve to be enemies of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala. They

**[10:58]** are nothing before Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala. They are created by Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala and Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala can eliminate them in no time. But Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala is involved in your struggles. Allah cares about those who are on the haq. So that's the first thing that

**[11:13]** comes to my mind that when we are betraying those people who are with Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala, who are suffering for Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala, we are making Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala our enemy. And the second thing that I want to point out is how Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam

**[11:30]** addressed this question. You know the context behind this ayah is that one sahabi who is Badri and a muhajir, that is he fought at Badr with Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam Hatib ibn Abi Balta'a had sent out a letter to the people of Mecca

**[11:53]** warning them that Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam is coming. This is just before the Fath of Mecca, before the opening of Mecca. And this was, you know this could be considered treason, high treason because Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam had clearly said do not inform them and there was clear understanding. So Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam was given

**[12:12]** wahi, he intercepted the letter, famous story. And when Umar (رضي الله عنه) at that time, basically he went with what would normally be done. The legal solution to this would be that such a traitor should be put to death. And at this point Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam

**[12:29]** stops him and he said, that Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam stops Umar and says,

**[12:47]** Oh Umar, what do you know? Maybe Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala looked upon the people who participated the very first battle of Islam and said, do what you like, do what you will, for I have forgiven you. So here he subhanahu wa ta'ala, Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam found a way to forgive

**[13:09]** Hatib because the harm had not occurred. But this, when we are dealing in our communities with people, especially from an earlier generation or people, you know, with different earlier circumstances made certain decisions, people who have served Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala and his

**[13:28]** deen, and yet they make some mistakes. Remember Hatib (رضي الله عنه) and remember that people's services, if they have shown their sincerity to Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala, they deserve a second chance. And so these are the two things. One is ma'iyya of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala with the

**[13:49]** struggle. And second, how believers within themselves deal with acts when we err, we make mistakes, we make wrong judgment, that forgiveness should always be an option. And it is sometimes

**[14:08]** the higher option. And the final thing that I, as I mentioned, Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala is very clear here that these are enemies of Allah and enemies of the believers, that one should not show softness toward them, one should not betray the believers. And yet Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala

**[14:28]** qualifies who this other is. These are people whom Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala gives three qualities qatalukum, akhrajukum min diyarikum, wadhaharu ala ikhrajikum. These are people who have fought you

**[14:45]** and expelled you from your homes, or helped you, or helped you in doing so. So those who have helped, even if they are formerly Muslim, they are part of those, part of the

**[15:00]** But other than those people, there are many people who are non-believers, but with them Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala commands al-birr and al-qist, benevolence, kindness and justice. Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala bless you and reward you for that. SubhanAllah, don't forget who you are, but also don't forget who your real friends are.

**[15:22]** And Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala, it's just beautiful, I was just thinking about the tie-in here, that Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala is saying if you forget me, you forget yourself. And also Allah azawajal is so intimately involved in our affairs that your enemy is my enemy when you are a believer. Who wants more than that?

**[15:37]** And tawallani fee man tawallait, you're asking Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala to become your guardian, to take you in, to be your wali. May Allah azawajal be that for us and may we turn back to Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala in a way that allows us to have that beautiful guardianship from Him subhanahu wa ta'ala.

**[15:53]** Talbishah. Now, speaking of the guardianship, subhanAllah, it's important to know that guardianship comes with the remembrance of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala and mindfulness of Allah. And one word that we always hear is the word taqwa.

**[16:08]** But taqwa, translation of the Arabic language is already, it's something that we can safely argue that to say translation of Arabic, one could debate that. And one could just get general meanings and understandings and derivatives from it to have a general concept of the Arabic based on the morphologic makeup and how the word is made up or the verb itself.

**[16:29]** But the word taqwa, subhanAllah, definitely has a connection with both of what you have mentioned in regards to remembering Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala, the dhikr of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala, and having that allegiance with Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala and the ones that have that allegiance with Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala, having that common fraternity.

**[16:45]** And because of that fraternity, there is a bond that is unshakeable bi-idhnillah subhanahu wa ta'ala. And the taqwa can be understood as the mindfulness of Allah, which leads to the title of what I want to capture is mindfulness. Mindfulness of Allah erases and magnifies.

**[17:00]** What's so beautiful about the sharia, you know, always contemplating over the framework and the blueprint of the sharia, how Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala has given us a framework, a system for our souls. And the implementation of that system is that which rejuvenates, aligns and refines the soul, the fitrah, and purifies it as well.

**[17:19]** So always remembering anything that is legislated in the sharia has guidelines and objectives. So whatever we do in the course of those guidelines and objectives is a means for purification. And it is a means to come closer to Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala.

**[17:34]** And that is when one is mindful of Allah, his names and his attributes, as you mentioned, Sheikh, having those names and attributes in your conscience, in your mind and in your heart, by implementing the result of understanding those names and attributes.

**[17:49]** So when you see Allah as a Razaq, when you lose your job or you see, you realize that Allah can provide you at all times in how he wills, particularly in the concept of or the aspect of a chapter of life that some of us have faced, and some of us may never face it, in the concept of a divorce and talaq.

**[18:06]** And I want to talk about not talaq per se, but there is a general rule that Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala reminds us in regards to mindfulness of Allah in this particular context and situation. I mean, we talk about it endlessly and, you know, sometimes we don't want to talk about it,

**[18:23]** but it's a reality. How you've mentioned countless times, Sheikh Omar, about how you can see a different person come out when divorce happens. Someone that you've known for years in your community, you know, mashallah, they smile, they give salams, doesn't mean they're a good person,

**[18:39]** but this chapter of their life they've never faced before, and they feel they have to protect themselves, but the way that they're doing it, it may be devoid of taqwa. It may be devoid of mindfulness of Allah. Because as human beings, we have emotions,

**[18:54]** and if we allow those emotions to steer and to dictate our decisions, that can be something that shows displeasure with Allah's predestination, which may require someone just to stand back, to sit back, and to have mindfulness of Allah and be aware that Allah swt al-amru lahu,

**[19:10]** that the situation is ultimately for him. But to, at that moment, ask myself, what is my responsibility, even if I feel that this aspect of legislation is something that may make me look weak, or may, you know, mistaken my kindness for weakness,

**[19:26]** or my religiosity for quietism, for example. So when we look in here, Allah swt mentions, after talking about the first couple of verses in Talaq, the waiting period of if someone was to get a divorce, what is the waiting period of the woman.

**[19:41]** And what's so beautiful about Islam is that it covers every aspect of life. Allah being al-alim, the all-knowledgeable, knows what may happen, and he understands the nature of the human being, to the degree to where if a man was to pronounce divorce, that there is a waiting period for the woman to where you need to think about it.

**[19:57]** And if you are serious, there's not going to be any type of interaction. Rather, this waiting period is to determine a situation in the future that could lead to possible divorce that is final. Allah swt says in verse number five, roughly, where he says,

**[20:14]** I seek refuge in Allah from the accursed Satan, That is the commandment of Allah, which He revealed to you, and whoever fears Allah, and denies His evil, and is honoured by Him, will have a reward. Allah swt says, this is the commandment of Allah.

**[20:29]** The commandments that were revealed earlier regarding the time periods for the woman, if there was to be divorce, or in different situations, if she was pregnant, there was divorce, etc. That is the commandment of Allah, that He has revealed to you, Whoever is mindful of Allah,

**[20:45]** he will expunge his evil deeds and will richly reward him. This is so important in regards to this human interaction. Because this human interaction, someone that they've loved for years,

**[21:02]** had relation with, with their children, the relationship with their parents, you got to know their parents, we have children together, you and I have formed an individual together. Genetically, we are both genetically formed in this person.

**[21:17]** But there can be a situation to where we part. And we, subhanAllah, just as we were halal for each other, we may become haram upon each other, because this person may get married later in the future, so on and so forth. But within that period, it's important, as Allah consistently mentions in this chapter,

**[21:34]** Who is mindful of Allah, that Allah is As-Samee', when you are raising your voice at your wife, that Allah is Al-Baseer, when you sign a document that takes his rights unjustly. And that lawyer that doesn't even care about your faith,

**[21:51]** and just wants to be paid by the hour, he wants you to sign the document. Allah is Al-Baseer. In this instance, He will expunge their evil deeds.

**[22:06]** Because you may have said something that as soon as you hung up the phone, you didn't give salams, you hung up the phone, or you changed your number to where he can't find you, or she can't find you and the kids. Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala, if you make the effort,

**[22:22]** He will expunge those evil deeds for the person that mentions Allah, and is mindful of His greatness, and the reality of those names and attributes. And at the same time, which is beautiful, it could be simultaneously, it could not be,

**[22:37]** that when you do that action of taqwa, when you look inside of yourself, and you're not worried about what he will think, what she will think, what her family will think, what his family will think, I'm obeying Allah in this situation. I'm going to do what's right. Because what is right is what Allah has told me.

**[22:52]** Not what is right is what my relatives have told me to get back at this person. Rather, it's what Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala has told me. Not to kick her out of the house, for example. As Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala mentions in the earlier verses, that they should stay in their homes. So what Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala is saying, whoever is mindful of them,

**[23:07]** He will expunge his evil deeds or hers, wa yu'adham lahu ajra. And He will increase and will richly reward them. And yu'adham lahu ajra will magnify that ajra, that reward for leaving off something for Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala's sake.

**[23:23]** This is so powerful, particularly the context of this, because as I mentioned before, when everyone's talking around you, particularly in the aspect of divorce, this chapter of life of divorce, shaitan can easily creep in from many different angles.

**[23:38]** Not only from you, but from others towards you. Online and offline. So many different ways to affect you, and shaitan can come to you and whisper to where you want to get the one up on the person. But Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala consistently here is reminding us of the mindfulness of Him

**[23:54]** and the mindfulness of the allegiance to Him and those that believe in this aspect, in this regard. May Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala make us of those that understand the mindfulness of Allah erases and magnifies. Inna huwa li yudhadika. You know, SubhanAllah, that idea of magnifying your ajr,

**[24:10]** increasing your ajr. When you get a divorce, you're thinking about how to maximize your gains from the divorce, because you feel like you've already put so much into it. So much into it. And so that's where taqwa just goes out the window. It's how much can I take? How much can I break?

**[24:25]** Revenge, reward. And Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala is saying, flip that. Direct that towards me instead. SubhanAllah. This is very powerful what you said, because it's very much my own experience, and I advise whenever people come to me in this situation.

**[24:41]** This is the word that I tell them, is this ayah, wa man yattaqillaha yaj'al lahum akhraja. Just do a wird of this ayah. Like say it a hundred times, 200 times, 500 times. wa man yattaqillaha yaj'al lahum akhraja.

**[24:57]** I found in my own life that it has been a savior. SubhanAllah. Whomsoever has taqwa of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala, do the right thing and it's going to be really hard and it's going to look really, really difficult. And it's going to be like, this is unfair. How could anybody get away with this?

**[25:14]** He is taking my children or she's taking my wealth. yaj'al lahum akhraja, wa yarazukhu min haythu la yahtasib. Allah will make a way out for him and his rizq or her rizq will come

**[25:29]** from where he or she cannot imagine. I can say this is one of those things that I have tested and I have seen other people have tested and it's one of the hardest things, subhanAllah. I have had people who've gone through this who say,

**[25:44]** how could this happen? So my iman is shaken because this happened to me and I think the world is unjust. That I did everything right. And subhanAllah, I have seen that this ayah and this angle, this mindset can save people

**[26:03]** and make the most difficult things that seem like they will break you. They become your sources of strength. So subhanAllah. And one last thing I was going to say is how the two things are connected that we were talking about.

**[26:18]** It is when, in the case of Hatib, (رضي الله عنه). He wanted to save his family. He felt that they are in danger. There is a sense of crisis. There is a sense of conflict when it's easiest to break. And the Quran, subhanAllah,

**[26:35]** always calls us to do taqwa, to act in taqwa when it's the hardest. In action, in real life, as opposed to a kind of a laid back, internal quiet when you have time

**[26:50]** and when you are spiritual, not in real life. So the Quranic call to taqwa is always in the middle of a battle. Whether it's a battle of the selves, it's a battle of egos, it's a battle of swords and guns. So the taqwa of this ummah

**[27:07]** has increased like I have never seen before. Because we are in the middle of this battle. And subhanAllah, Allah chooses our battles in a way that we would never know. But, وَمَن يَتَّقِ اللَّهَ يَجْعَلْ لَهُ مَخْرَجًا وَيَرْزُقْهُ مِنْ حَيْثُ لَا يَحْتَسِبُ

**[27:24]** I say that to all the brothers and sisters who are going through a divorce, make it your wird. And I say that to those of us whose hearts are broken because of Gaza, whether they are in Gaza, facing it, or those of us who are watching helplessly.

**[27:39]** وَمَن يَتَّقِ اللَّهَ يَجْعَلْ لَهُ مَخْرَجًا وَيَرْزُقْهُ مِنْ حَيْثُ لَا يَحْتَسِبُ JazakAllah khair, sheikh. Beautiful note. May Allah reward you for that passionate plea to all of us to increase in our taqwa and to, bismillah, find the increase in that.

**[27:54]** May Allah bless you all and accept from you all. InshaAllah, we'll see you all tomorrow night. JazakAllah khair. Wassalamualaikum warahmatullahi wabarakatuh.
