# A Summary of Islam by the Prophet ﷺ | Khutbah

**[0:01]** They're starving for a different way of life, for an alternative. Allah Azza wa Jal has created us naturally inclined to want to worship Him alone. It's our fitrah, that we naturally, that there's this impulse inside of us that seeks a transcendent power.

**[0:22]** And if we don't fill that void with the deen of Islam, then we're going to look for other things to fill that void, but nothing is going to quench that thirst. And so, from the people of the past, who experienced this, was a man at the time of the Prophet,

**[0:40]** alayhi salatu was salam, named Amr ibn Abasa al-Sulami, radiyaAllahu ta'ala anhu, who later became a sahabi. At the time, he was living outside of Mecca. And he said, kuntu wa ana fil jahiliya, aw adhunnu anna nasa ala dalalah, wa anhum laiso ala shay wa hum ya'buduna al-awthan.

**[1:03]** He said, in jahiliya, before the advent of the Prophet, alayhi salatu was salam, I used to think that the people were astray, and that they weren't upon anything. They lost their way because they were worshipping idols.

**[1:23]** Fasami'atu bi rajulin bimakkah yukhbiru akhbaran. I heard about this man in Mecca, and he's telling these stories. He's talking about something, saying he's a prophet. At this time, the Prophet, salallahu alayhi wa sallam, was not openly calling to Islam because of the

**[1:41]** obstinance from his people and them setting up obstacles in his way. So he went and he snuck into Mecca and he found the Prophet, alayhi salatu was salam. And when he got to the Prophet, salallahu alayhi wa sallam, and noticed this man was not a mushrik.

**[1:58]** He didn't worship idols. He thought that that was not the right way. But he also didn't know the way to Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala. So he went to the Prophet, alayhi salatu was salam, and he didn't say man anta, who are you? He said ma'ant, what are you?

**[2:15]** And the Prophet, salallahu alayhi wa sallam, said, ana nabi, I am a prophet. And he says to the Prophet, salallahu alayhi wa sallam, wa ma nabi, what is this? What does this mean that you are a prophet? And he said, arsalani Allah, Allah sent me, Allah sent me.

**[2:37]** This is the definition. I want us to keep this in mind. This is the definition of what it means to be a prophet, that he was sent by Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala. A lot of us, we pay lip service to loving the Prophet, alayhi salatu was salam,

**[2:53]** but we overstep this major aspect of his life, which is that he was sent by Allah on a mission. And if we are truly followers of the Prophet, alayhi salatu was salam, then we need to recognize that mission and emulate the Prophet, alayhi salatu was salam, in his mission.

**[3:12]** So this man says to the Prophet, alayhi salatu was salam, what did he send you with? What did Allah send you with? Since you're a prophet, you say that Allah sent you, bima arsalak, what did he send you with? And the Prophet, salallahu alayhi wasalam, mentioned three things.

**[3:30]** And this is what we need to walk away from this khutbah with, bi idni Allah ta'ala. Arsalani bisilatil arham, wabi kasril awthan, wa an yuwhad Allah la yushraku bihi shay. He said, Allah sent me with silatil arham, to keep strong family ties, strong family bonds,

**[3:56]** and to break the idols, and that Allah azza wa jalla be worshipped alone, and that nothing be associated with him in that worship. This was the message of the Prophet, salallahu alayhi wasalam. This is how he summed up his message to Amr ibn Abbas al-Sulami, radiyaAllahu ta'ala anhu.

**[4:17]** He then went on to ask the Prophet, salallahu alayhi wasalam, who's with you on this? Who else is with you? And the Prophet, salallahu alayhi wasalam, said, hurrun wa'abd, a free man and a slave. He was talking about Abu Bakr as-Siddiq and Bilal, radiyaAllahu ta'ala anhuma. And then he went on to say, fa inni muttabi'uk, I will follow you.

**[4:32]** The Prophet, salallahu alayhi wasalam, said, you might not be able to do that just yet. He sent them back and he didn't catch up with the Prophet, salallahu alayhi wasalam, until Medina. Until Medina. Let us examine here, because the Prophet, alayhi wasalam, really gave him a clear message.

**[4:50]** And for those of us who are living amongst the people who are thirsty, we need to understand this message, how simple it is, but how profound it is, and how it can make a difference in our lives personally, and how it should make a difference in the lives of the people that we can affect in society.

**[5:07]** So the Prophet, alayhi wasalam, started off by saying that Allah sent him with silat al-arham, to keep strong family ties. And this was a recurring theme in the message of the Prophet, alayhi wasalam, because family is the basic building block of any community, is the basic unit of any society.

**[5:28]** So when you see family break down, when there's rampant divorce, or there's no marriage in the first place, when you see this happening, and children who hate their parents,

**[5:43]** parents who are not dutiful to their parents, and all of these things that happen, then what begins, you see, is a breakdown in society itself, because that family unit also is what keeps morality strong.

**[5:58]** And so without that, and without strong family ties, then you start to see the decay of society as a whole, and we don't have to do much more than look around us. That's all we have to do. Just examine what the situation is, especially in different cities,

**[6:17]** in those urban environments where everybody is about work, they don't care about their families, they don't have any time when they eat with their family, during the week at all, or anything, and you start to see the decay of society as a whole. So our Prophet, alayhi wasalam, emphasized this, and this is the rights of the creation over us.

**[6:38]** Allah, azza wa jal, has rights, and there are people who have rights over us as well. And the first people we should think of, when we think of silat al-arhan, keeping those strong family ties, is our parents.

**[6:54]** And that doesn't matter if your parents are mushrikoon, even if they disbelieve in Allah, azza wa jal, beyond that, even if they try to get you to commit shirk, you still have to be kind to them, you still have to be dutiful to them.

**[7:10]** It's not what I'm saying, it's what Allah, azza wa jal, says, وَإِن جَاهَدَكَ لِتُشْرِكَ بِمَا لَيْسَ لَكَ بِهِ عِلْمٌ فَلَا تُطِعْهُمَا وَصَاحِبُهُمَا فِي الدُّنْيَا مَعْرُوفًا If your parents try to get you to associate with me, i.e. associate with me partners that you have no knowledge of,

**[7:28]** don't obey them, وَصَاحِبُهُمَا فِي الدُّنْيَا مَعْرُوفًا but still be kind to them in this dunya. We're living in an era where people actually cancel their parents. As if this is something that is not just that it's permissible because it's obviously not, but that it even makes sense.

**[7:43]** What does that mean to cancel your parents? That they're no longer a part of your life, that you want nothing to do with those who raised you, who gave birth to you. When our Prophet, a.s.w., already explained this when he said,

**[7:58]** الوالد أوسط أبواب الجنة The parent is the best gate to Jannah. فإن شدت فأضيعها وإن شدت فأحفظها If you want you can neglect that door and if you want then you can protect it. And our Prophet, a.s.w., said that the best deed that a person can do after the Salat

**[8:20]** is بِرُّ الوالدين To be dutiful to your parents. When Ibn Mas'ud went to the Prophet, a.s.w., and he said, أيُّ العَمَلِ أفضل What's the best thing I could do? The Prophet, a.s.w., said, صلَّاتُ عَلَى وَقْتِهَا Praying at its proper time, praying in its early time.

**[8:38]** He said, ثُمَّ أيْء قَالَ بِرُّ الْوَالِدَيْن Then what? Then being dutiful to your parents. قال ثمَّ أيْء Then he asked them, then what? He said, الجهاد في سبيل الله So the Prophet, a.s.w., when talking to Ibn Mas'ud, he said that being dutiful to your parents is actually better than جهاد في سبيل الله

**[9:01]** And so it is very important, brothers and sisters in Islam, that at the very least, we do what our parents tell us to do. That is, see, many of us think that بِرُّ الْوَالِدَيْن, that is the meaning, but that's just the level of بِرُّ الْوَالِدَيْن

**[9:17]** That's the minimum, that is the bare minimum that you do what your parents ask you to do, as long as it's not in disobedience to Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala. The next level is that you're proactive. That you actually think about, what would my mother like?

**[9:34]** What would my father like me to do or not to do? And then you do those things, or you stay away from those things. There's a third level, and that's to put their desires over your own. Even though they wouldn't want you to do that, or even though they may not require that of you,

**[9:50]** but it's that you look to what they want, even if it means you have to deprive yourself of some things, that you do it for them. This, brothers and sisters in Islam, and before I move on to the next point, this part is really important. We have a duty as parents to teach our children this.

**[10:07]** They're not learning this in school. They're not going to learn it. There's a counter narrative. There's a push against listening to your parents on everything they watch, from cartoons to social media to everything else. It's all about doing you, not about what your parents want you to do.

**[10:24]** And so we have a duty to teach our children that. It's not about being self-serving here. It's about keeping order in society and preventing societal breakdown at its very foundational root, which means that your children have to be of a level of birr that at the very least means that they obey you.

**[10:46]** The Prophet, alaihi salatu was-salaam, went on to say, وَكَسِّرِ الْأَوْثَانِ And to break the idols. The Prophet, salallahu alayhi wasalam, was sent to break idols. Many of us, when we think about idols, we're thinking about trees and stones and statues.

**[11:05]** As Ibn Qayyim, rahmatullah alayhi, said, that the intent of Allah, azza wa jal, is not just كَسْرِ الْأَوْثَانِ المُجَسَّدَةِ It's not just about breaking these 3D idols, if you will, the tangible idols.

**[11:23]** وَتَرْكِ الْأَصْنَامِ الَّتِي فِي الْقَلْبِ And leaving those idols that are in your heart. And every single human being has an idol in their heart, proportionate to his or her hawa.

**[11:39]** أَفَرَأَيْتَ مَنِتَّخَذَ إِلَّهَ هُوَهَا Have you not seen the one who has taken his own desires as his God? And what does that even mean? Because many of us think we're free from shirk, we're Muslim, alhamdulillah, I say la ilaha illallah,

**[11:54]** and I say it every time in the shahada when I'm in tashahhud, la ilaha illallah. And we think that we're done. No. Tawheed is an active thing that you do. Breaking those idols is an active thing. We live in a society that has set up idols for us. Consumerism is an idol.

**[12:12]** Many of us seek pleasure through things, and we just buy, and we buy more. And we impress this way of living upon our children because we have, alhamdulillah, Allah has blessed us. So we give, and they buy, and they buy more.

**[12:29]** Guess what? Every worshiper wants to emulate what they worship. Consumerism is starving. It needs to be fed by our dollars. And just like it starves, we are also never satisfied because we just keep buying more and more things.

**[12:46]** It's an idol. You got to break it. You have to break that. The Prophet shallallahu alaihi wa sallam was sent to break idols. Individualism is an idol. We've moved from a world that is God-centered to one that is self-centered.

**[13:02]** Everything is about me. We worship the likes. Social media, everything is about a culture of insincerity. So that we move away from doing what we do sincerely for the sake of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala.

**[13:23]** And we move to doing what we do to please ourselves. أقول قولي هذا وأستغفر الله لي ولكم فاستغفروه إنه هو الغفور الرحيم

**[13:38]** الحمد لله وكفاه وصلاة والسلام على رسول المصطفى وعلى آله وصحبه ومن ولا مباعد Brothers and sisters in Islam, the Prophet shallallahu alaihi wa sallam mentioned for the third thing when he summarized what the Da'wah of Islam is and this is the heart of it

**[13:56]** وَأَيُّ وَحَدَ اللَّهِ لَا يُشْرَقُ بِهِ شَيْءٍ That we single out Allah and worship and that we worship nothing else with Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala. We worship Allah azza wa jal through our love of Him, through hope in Him,

**[14:15]** and through a healthy fear of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala. And without those three things we cannot be true worshippers of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala. We have to love Him, we have to have hope in Him, and we have to fear Him subhanahu wa ta'ala. And ultimately this is what we gain from Allah azza wa jal revealing to us Surat al-Fatiha

**[14:35]** and introducing Himself to the creation through Surat al-Fatiha. So we love Allah rabbil alameen and we hope in Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala ar-Rahman ar-Rahim and we fear Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala maaliki yawm al-deen. And it is through that, iyaaka na'budu, it is through that that we worship Him

**[14:53]** and we seek assistance from Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala in that worship of Him. Our relationship with Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala in knowing Him and worshipping Him alone and not associating any partners with Him in that worship should not be a passive relationship.

**[15:08]** We should be actively trying to know who Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala is through reading His words, the Quran, through reading those words. And also a systematic study of the names of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala and His attributes. This will help us to draw closer to Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala

**[15:25]** and to avoid associating anything in that worship with Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala. These three things that the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said, keeping strong family ties, breaking the idols, and worshipping Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala alone is the core message of Islam.

**[15:44]** All of us have to look at ourselves and recognize that on a good survey, we make up 2% of the population, Muslims make up 2% of the population here in the United States of America. And Allah azza wa jal decreed for you to be one of those Muslims

**[16:03]** and He decreed for you to be here in America. For what? Allah azza wa jal knows best. But we're here and we have a duty as followers of the Prophet aleyhi salatu wasalam, balighu anni walaw ayin.

**[16:18]** Convey this message from me, even if it's just one ayin. Convey this message of Islam. We have a duty to do that. This is not optional. It's not something that we can just walk away from and think, no, no. Our people need this message.

**[16:37]** And I'm intentional in saying our people. Until we recognize the American people, the redneck up the street, until we recognize them as our people, then we're going to keep this message to ourselves as if it's just for the Muslims.

**[16:52]** But no prophet was sent to his people, if you read throughout the Quran, and they were already doing everything they were supposed to do. And they were already Muslim for that matter. And when Nuh aleyhi salam was sent to his people, he said, Ya qawmi yabudullah, ya qawmi yabudullah,

**[17:09]** O my people, my people, worship Allah. Malakum min ilahin ghayrun. There is no other ilah that deserves to be worshipped except for him. When Salih was sent to his people, all of the prophets, when you read them in surat al-Hudur,

**[17:27]** you read from surat al-A'raf, all of the prophets said to their people, Ya qawmi. But see, from the tricks of shaitan, is that if somebody asks you right now, who's your people? The people of Pakistan, the people of Palestine, the people of this.

**[17:44]** Nah, those are part of your people. But you're right here. Allah put you here. You're here. Whether you came here, your parents came here, you accepted Islam here, the bottom line is you are here.

**[17:59]** And we have a duty, we have a duty as Muslims in this land, to carry the message of Islam to the people who are around us. That does not mean that you have to stand on a corner with a bullhorn and you're going to go and pass out pamphlets or something like that.

**[18:15]** Not necessarily. But do you have neighbors that maybe are not Muslim? Can you talk to them? They're your neighbors. The prophet, peace be upon him, said whoever believes in Allah on the last day, then let him honor his neighbor, let him be good to his neighbor. What better message can you take to your neighbor

**[18:34]** than to invite them to the deen of Allah, subhanahu wa ta'ala. Just to be a good neighbor. Be an outstanding citizen, be an upright person. So that when the people look and they say, yeah, that's a Muslim, they recognize that you are a doer of good, you bring good to the community.

**[18:52]** In any event, there are many different ways to give dawah. The khutbah is not long enough to talk about those things. But I want us to walk away with the imperative of dawah. If we are truly followers of the prophet, peace be upon him, if we truly love the prophet, peace be upon him,

**[19:08]** فَإِنَّ الْمُحِبَّ نِمَنْ يُحِبُّ مُطِيعُ The one who loves someone obeys them. And Allah azawajal says to the prophet, peace be upon him, قُلْ إِن كُنْتُمْ تُحِبُّونَ اللَّهَ فَاتَّبِعُونِ يُحْبِبُكُمُ اللَّهَ وَيَقْفِلْ لَكُمْ ذُنُوبُكُمْ

**[19:24]** Allah azawajal told the prophet, peace be upon him, to say, to say to all of us, if you really love Allah, we love Allah, if you really love Allah, follow me. This is what the prophet, peace be upon him, said. Follow me and Allah will love you and he will forgive you of his sins.

**[19:39]** May Allah azawajal make us true followers of the prophet, peace be upon him. May he forgive us for our shortcomings and may he guide us. رَبَّنَا اغْفِرْ لَنَا وَلِيَخْوَانِنَا الَّذِينَ سَبَكُنَا بِالْإِمَانِ وَلَا يَتَجَعَلْ فِي قُلُوبِنَا غِلًّا لِلَّذِينَ آمِنُوا رَبَّنَا إِنَّكَ رَؤُوفٌ رَحِيمٌ اللهم أصلح لنا ديننا الذي هو عِسْمَةُ أَمْرِنَا

**[19:56]** وأصلح لنا دنيانا التي فيها معاشنا وأصلح لنا ديننا الذي هو عِسْمَةُ أَمْرِنَا آخِرَةَنَا الَّذِي لَيْهَا مَعَادُنَا وَجَعَلِ الْحَيَاةَ زِيَادَةً لَنَا فِي كُلِّ خَيْرٍ وَالْمَوْتَ رَاحَةً لَنَا مِنْ كُلِّ شَرٍّ رَبَّنَا آتِنَا فِي الدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةً وَفِي الْآخِرَةِ حَسَنَةً وَقِنَا عَذَابِ النَّارِ وَأَقِمِ الصَّلَاةِ
