When the Prophet’s ﷺ companion Usayd ibn Hudair (r) recited the Qur’an, the skies were flooded with angels. His witness of their presence revealed to us what happens when the angels descend to listen to the Qur’an. ## Transcript **[0:00]** Usaid ibn Hudhir radiAllahu ta'ala anhu was one of the chiefs in what was of course known at that time, Yathrib, before the Prophet SallAllahu Alaihi Wasallam came to and became Medina. And he was the chief of the tribe of Al-Aws. Remember the Ansar were divided into Al-Aws and Al-Khazraj. **[0:24]** And when Mus'ab radiAllahu ta'ala anhu was sent to Medina to teach the people, to call them to Islam from hajj to hajj, Usaid heard about Mus'ab radiAllahu ta'ala anhu and he came to him in a state of rage, wanting to stop him from corrupting his people. **[0:41]** But Mus'ab radiAllahu ta'ala anhu with his manners and with his beautiful preaching, was able to convince him to just hear him out for a moment. So Usaid sat and he listened to Mus'ab radiAllahu ta'ala anhu read the Qur'an to him. And when Mus'ab recited the Qur'an to Usaid, **[0:58]** it fell in his heart and immediately SubhanAllah, not only did he fall in love with it, but he became instrumental in getting Medina as a whole to become Muslim. He wanted everyone to hear this magnificent Qur'an that he had heard that caused him to embrace Islam **[1:14]** and to call his entire people to Islam. So the chapter that we come to is actually a chapter in Sahih Al-Bukhari, which is Bab Nuzul Al-Sakinah Wal-Malaika Ainda Qiraatil Qur'an. The chapter of the descent of Al-Sakinah, the descent of tranquility and the angels **[1:30]** when the Qur'an is recited. It's a Hadith where Usaid radiAllahu ta'ala anhu says, that I was reciting Surat Al-Baqarah at night. So imagine him standing outside in his courtyard, reciting it either in a state of prayer or just in a state of recitation. **[1:47]** But he's outside at night and his horse was tied beside him. And as he recites Surat Al-Baqarah, the horse seems startled and it starts to tremble. So he said, I stopped reciting and I went out **[2:02]** and I looked to see what the horse was seeing and the horse went quiet. So he said, I kept on reciting Surat Al-Baqarah. He said, again, the horse was startled and the horse started to tremble. So he said, I stopped reciting. I started to look around. **[2:17]** I said, what's going on here? Why is the horse so shocked by this recitation or by what's happening? So he said, I started again. And he said, SubhanAllah, the third time when he recited the Quran, the horse started to tremble and was startled **[2:32]** to the extent that it almost trampled his son Yahya. So he said, my son was out there as well and the horse was so moved that I thought the horse was actually going to trample my son Yahya. So he said, the next morning, I went to the Prophet SallAllahu Alaihi Wasallam and I told the Prophet SallAllahu Alaihi Wasallam what happened. **[2:49]** And the Prophet SallAllahu Alaihi Wasallam said, Iqraa ya ibn Hudair, Iqraa, read O ibn Hudair, read O ibn Hudair. And I said to Rasulullah SallAllahu Alaihi Wasallam, Ya Rasulullah, my son Yahya was there and I thought the horse was actually going to trample him. And he said, when I looked at the sky, **[3:05]** I saw a cloud containing what looked like masabih, these lamps or these lanterns in the sky with these clouds. So when I stopped reciting, they left. And the Prophet SallAllahu Alaihi Wasallam said, wa tadri ma thak, do you know what that is O Usaid? **[3:22]** I said, no. He said, tilkal mala'ika. He said, that was the angels, they came close because of your recitation. He said, walaw qaraat la asbahat yandhuru ilayha an-naas la tatawara minhum. And he said, had you continued to recite O Usaid, **[3:37]** the people would have come and they would have been able to stare at the angels and nothing would conceal the angels from them. So SubhanAllah, if you were to keep on reciting the Quran, the angels would have come down until the morning time and the people would have seen the effect **[3:53]** of the angels in the sky. In another narration, there was a man that was reciting Surah Al-Kahf and he had the exact same experience. And he came to the Prophet SallAllahu Alaihi Wasallam and he told the Prophet SallAllahu Alaihi Wasallam what happened and the Prophet SallAllahu Alaihi Wasallam said, that was a sakinah, that was tranquility **[4:11]** that descended because of qiraat al-Quran, because of the recitation of the Quran. Al-Hafidh bin Hajar RahimAllah Ta'ala, who of course is the main explainer of Sahih Al-Bukhari, he said that a sakinah here actually refers to the malaika, tranquility actually refers to the angels **[4:28]** because wherever the angels go, sakinah descends. Wherever the angels go, tranquility descends. And so whether that is a person reciting the Quran and so the angels come and they witness that Quran, especially the Quran at Fajr and the Quran at Asr. **[4:45]** When they witness that loud recitation of the Quran, they bring with them a tranquility, they bring with them a peace. And SubhanAllah, that sakinah comes into the household. And Abu Huraira radiAllahu ta'ala Anhu mentions that homes are expanded due to the recitation of the Quran. **[5:00]** Not only do they expel the shayateen, not only do they expel the devils, but the angels are present in that home so much that there is sakinah. There is tranquility that overtakes every single element, every single aspect of that home. And that is what is seen then in the presence of the clouds. **[5:18]** We know the Prophet SallAllahu Alaihi Wasallam describing to us from the signs of Laylatul Qadr, that there is a tranquil night to the signs that we see within our own hearts when we are in the presence of the Quran for an extended period of time. ## Other Episodes in "Angels In Their Presence | Season 2" -
