## Description
Forbearance and deliberation flow from the same fountain. This episode tells a special story about the Prophet Muhammad and his companions to illustrate Allah’s love for these two qualities.

## Transcript
**[0:01]** As-salamu alaykum, welcome back to Allah Loves. So this is a very special story that I learned

**[0:19]** very early on while studying the companions of the Prophet salallahu alayhi wa sallam. Because a lot of times when you're hearing hadiths about rushing to do good and this idea of the companions being highly motivated, which they were, sometimes that could lead a person to not be very deliberate about their actions and the things that they do. So this

**[0:38]** is a hadith which takes place with a long incident in the backdrop where you had the tribes that were coming to see the Prophet salallahu alayhi wa sallam, the delegations that were coming to the Prophet salallahu alayhi wa sallam. And people were rushing to get off their camels, get off their horses, jump and run to the Prophet salallahu alayhi

**[0:53]** wa sallam so that they could kiss his hands and they could greet him. And there was one person that stayed back for some time. And you've got to think, well who's the one that's getting the camels set? Who's the one that's keeping things in order? Who's the one that's actually staying behind, making sure that no one dropped anything? Who's that guy,

**[1:11]** right? That guy was Al-Ashaj Abdul Qais. Al-Ashaj was an Ansari, he was a young man, but he was very deliberate about the things that he did. He was very calculated. So he was the one that was making sure that everything was tied properly. And so he stayed behind, he made sure that his tribe had all of their belongings with them, he tied the camels properly,

**[1:31]** he went and he changed and he made himself presentable. Then he came to the Prophet salallahu alayhi wa sallam. And some of his tribe, they kind of mocked that deliberation or they felt like he was being slow. But the Prophet salallahu alayhi wa sallam said to him that, inna feeqa khaslatain, that you have in you two qualities, you hibbuhum Allah, that Allah

**[1:50]** loves about you. And he said, what are they, O Messenger of Allah? He said, al-hilm wal-ana, you're forbearing and you are deliberate. Forbearance and deliberation. Now those words are tough words, so let me explain them. Forbearance is when you are particularly patient with

**[2:08]** people. So we talked about patience and holding yourself back, right? It's a lot easier to be patient with natural disaster, with something bad happening that's outside of anyone's control than it is when it's someone in front of you that is really messing with your patience,

**[2:23]** right? So the Prophet salallahu alayhi wa sallam, in the incident that we covered a few episodes ago with Aisha radiallahu anha and the people that shouted out to him, assalamu alaykum, the Prophet salallahu alayhi wa sallam was showing forbearance. He's holding himself back, restraining himself, right? And so when you have hilm, when you have forbearance,

**[2:41]** you are able to hold it in. That's why Ibrahim alayhi wa sallam is described as halim. One of the names of Allah is al-halim, one who is forbearing. Allah is forbearing with us. Allah tolerates our weaknesses, our sometimes wickedness, and Allah does not punish us right

**[2:59]** away, but instead Allah gives us a chance to repent. So al-hilm is that a person is forbearing, they're calculated, they're well restrained, and so their anger is only for specific contexts, and it's carried out in a way that is pleasing to Allah subhanahu

**[3:17]** wa ta'ala. Al-ana is a related quality of being calculated, of being deliberate, of making sure that you do things properly. Now al-ana is the opposite of haste. The Prophet salallahu alayhi wa sallam said al-ajalatu minash shaitaan, that haste is from the devil,

**[3:33]** and al-ana which is to be deliberate is from Allah. Al-ana is that a person takes their time to make sure that everything is done right, that nothing is out of order, and so just as they have a great sense of self-control, they also have a great control of their environment

**[3:50]** as well. They're making sure that they're always doing things properly, calculated, structured, not in a way that would hinder progress, but in a way that would sustain it. Not in a way that would make them too slow, but in a way that would make sure that their speed and going ahead with good things are done in a way that would maintain a momentum,

**[4:10]** a steady momentum towards Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala and towards those good things. So Hilm and al-ana come from the same well, the same fountain, which is to be forbearing, to be calm, to be collected, to be deliberate about what you do. And Allah subhanahu wa

**[4:27]** ta'ala who has that quality himself of being forbearing loves to see it in us and loves to see that we take our time to make sure that things are done right and that we don't rush and that we're not hasty with the things that we do. And some people might criticize that as being slow, but it's not slow. Just like some people might criticize a person

**[4:44]** who doesn't react to insult or to foulness in like manner as being too slow or being too reserved. All of those things are actually beloved to Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala because they're done from a place of intentionality and we as believers are taught to be intentional about the things that we do. So we ask Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala to put those beloved qualities

**[5:03]** in us as well and to allow them to manifest themselves in our personality and in our work and how we control our environment. Jazakum Allah khayran. See you all next time inshaAllah. As-salamu alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh.
