**[0:00]** Continuing along the category of young Ansar that were around the Prophet ﷺ, whose parents

**[0:15]** were also companions, but who really carried the lion's share of work on behalf of their families and became the legends that we know today and that we benefit from today. The companion that we're covering today is very similar to Zayd ibn al-Arqam, in two

**[0:36]** ways. Number one, in that his name is common amongst the companions of the Prophet ﷺ, to a lesser extent than Zayd. Number two, in that he is one of the frequent narrators of hadith, but his story is not

**[0:52]** as well known. And when I say frequent, if you remember with Zayd, we're talking about Zayd ibn al-Arqam, about how many ahadith? Does anyone remember? About a hundred. With the companion that we're covering today, he is actually one of the most frequent narrators

**[1:09]** of the hadith of the Prophet ﷺ, and he narrates over 300 ahadith from the Prophet ﷺ, but his biography tends to not be covered in detail, and his name is al-Bara' ibn Aazib al-Ansari,

**[1:26]** al-faqih al-kabir, the great scholar, noble scholar, as Imam al-Dhahabi, rahimahullah, introduces him. His kunya is Abu Umara, Abu Umara, or Abu Imara, it comes in both ways, Abu Umara or Abu Imara.

**[1:42]** Sometimes in the hadith it's just Abu Umara. So Abu Umara al-Bara' ibn Aazib al-Ansari, radiAllahu ta'ala anhu, and he too was actually famous. So in the life of the companions, as a generation, and in the lives of the tabi'een, he was

**[1:58]** considered one of mashahir as-sahaba, he was considered one of the most famous companions of the Prophet ﷺ. As al-Dhahabi rahimahullah says, min a'yan as-sahaba, one of the most eminent and most noble of the companions, wa lahu iddatu ahadith, and he has narrated numerous narrations from

**[2:16]** the Prophet ﷺ. Now like Zayd, as we said there are multiple Zayds, so we already covered one Bara' in the firsts. Does anyone remember which al-Bara' we covered already?

**[2:31]** Someone said it, I heard it. You're allowed to answer too, of course. Al-Bara' ibn Malik, radiAllahu ta'ala anhu, and he's the brother of Anas ibn Malik, radiAllahu ta'ala anhu.

**[2:47]** The brother of Anas ibn Malik, may Allah be pleased with them both. As we said about al-Bara' ibn Malik, al-Bara' ibn Malik did not narrate many narrations at all. That al-Bara' was a warrior, and he fought and strove and he put himself in the most

**[3:03]** precarious and difficult situations for the sake of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala, and saved his brother's life, Anas ibn Malik radiAllahu anhu, his life in battle, and was martyred in the process while Anas radiAllahu anhu went on to become one of the most frequent

**[3:19]** narrators of hadiths of the Prophet ﷺ. So there's al-Bara' ibn Malik, there are other al-Bara's, there's al-Bara' ibn Ma'rur, radiAllahu ta'ala anhu. But there's al-Bara' ibn Aazib, and so when you're reading hadith books, and you just see al-Bara', right?

**[3:36]** And this is frequent, you just see al-Bara', who is it referring to, al-Bara' ibn Malik or al-Bara' ibn Aazib? The one we're going to talk about tonight. And you'll be surprised how many hadiths that you know, right, or you've heard, that come from this man al-Bara' radiAllahu ta'ala anhu, al-Bara' ibn Malik radiAllahu ta'ala anhu,

**[3:54]** al-Bara' ibn Aazib radiAllahu ta'ala anhu. The reason why it's important to know when you're reading a book of seerah or when you're reading hadiths of the Prophet ﷺ, or one of the books of our tradition, is that sometimes they stop at one name. Like we already said, Abdullah is who?

**[4:10]** If it's just Abdullah, who's it talking about? Abdullah ibn Mas'ud. Any Abdullah ibn is someone else. But if it's just Abdullah, it is the best of them, it's Abdullah ibn Mas'ud. So if it's just al-Bara', it is talking about al-Bara' ibn Aazib al-Ansari radiAllahu ta'ala

**[4:27]** anhu wa'an abi. Now he's named after his forefather and he is from the tribe of Banu Haritha of al-Aws. His father, Aazib, is a companion as well, but he only has one narration, and it's a

**[4:44]** significant one, and it's from his son as well. So his father was very old when he embraced Islam and he kind of disappears into the background after a singular narration. So his father Aazib is also a sahabi radiAllahu ta'ala anhu. His uncles are also significant.

**[5:00]** He has one uncle, al-Qays ibn al-Harith, who is one of the companions and a martyr in the battle of Yamama, a shaheed of Yamama. He has another uncle named Abi Burda, who was one of the trusted confidants of the Prophet ﷺ. So his father is a companion. His mother also embraces Islam.

**[5:17]** We don't know her name, but she embraces Islam as well. She's a companion. And his uncles are also companions of the Prophet ﷺ. And he describes now his journey to Islam. He says that when Mus'ab ibn Umayr radiAllahu anhu came to Medina, and of course at that

**[5:35]** time it was called Yathrib, before the Prophet ﷺ arrived, he attached himself to Mus'ab radiAllahu anhu. So much so that he says by the time the Prophet ﷺ got to Medina, so he's going to meet the Prophet ﷺ after the hijrah. By the time the Prophet ﷺ got to Medina, I already memorized

**[5:53]** a significant portion of as-suwar al-mufassal, which are the short surahs of the Quran. So I memorized a lot of as-suwar al-mufassal before the Prophet ﷺ even got to Medina, and I had the chance to actually recite them to the Prophet ﷺ.

**[6:09]** So his description of the Prophet ﷺ is a beautiful one, and actually like the books of shama'il, the books of describing the Messenger of Allah ﷺ are loaded with narrations from al-Bara' radiAllahu ta'ala anhu. He describes the build up, the anticipation in Medina.

**[6:27]** He's only 10 years old, and he sees his parents excited, and he sees his tribe excited, and he's attached himself to Mus'ab, and he's become a close student of Mus'ab, and you can imagine as he's dedicated himself to Mus'ab, and Mus'ab goes back to Mecca, he can't wait to meet the Prophet ﷺ.

**[6:45]** So he is one of those kids who he and his family are going out there to Quba, and they're waiting to see when the Prophet ﷺ is going to arrive. So you can see the world through his eyes radiAllahu ta'ala anhu. So the Prophet ﷺ is this huge symbol to him for an entire year,

**[7:02]** and I can't wait to meet him ﷺ. So he says, wa kana awwala man qadima alayna min al-muhajireen Mus'ab ibn Umayr akhu bani Abd al-Dar ibn Qusayy. Says the first one that came to us was Mus'ab from the Muhajireen.

**[7:18]** And so we said to him as we were waiting in the hijrah, ma fa'ala Rasul Allah ﷺ, where is the Prophet ﷺ? And he said, huwa makanihi wa ashabuhu ala athari. That he is in his place, and his companions are right behind me.

**[7:34]** Meaning he's coming. So Mus'ab came back as the most familiar face to Medina, who introduced Islam to Medina, who set the landscape for the Prophet ﷺ. And those that know Mus'ab now can't wait. Mus'ab says, don't worry, he's coming ﷺ.

**[7:51]** His companions are coming as well. So he says, thumma ata ba'dahu Ibn Umm Maktoum. Then Ibn Umm Maktoum radiAllahu ta'ala anhu came, al-a'ma, the blind one. So another companion that we've heard about. As ﷺ was thinking about this, it's very significant.

**[8:08]** Surah Abasa was one of those surahs that the people of Medina had memorized. So imagine the subject of ja'ahu al-a'ma, the blind man came, walks into your city. Like there's another celebrity that you cling to. So he says, then we said to him, ma fa'ala man wara'aka Rasul Allah ﷺ

**[8:27]** wa ashabuhu. Where's the Prophet ﷺ and his companions? What else is coming? When is he coming? So he said, that Ibn Umm Maktoum said, he's in his place and he's going to be right behind me. So the Prophet ﷺ is coming. Qala thumma ata ba'dahu Ammar ibn Yasir.

**[8:43]** Then Ammar ibn Yasir came. And Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas came. May Allah be pleased with them all. And then came Abdullah ibn Mas'ud. And then came Bilal. May Allah be pleased with them. So he's naming the companions as they're coming into Mecca. So you can imagine the grand entrance, right?

**[9:00]** In Quba, in Medina when they're waiting. And each one of them we went to and we said, where's the Prophet ﷺ? And they said, he's coming. Then he said, ata ba'dahum Umar ibn al-Khattab fi ishrina rakiban. Umar radiAllahu ta'ala anhu showed up and he had 20 people with him.

**[9:17]** Why do you think Umar radiAllahu anhu had 20 people with him? Because he wasn't scared of anybody. Like you're talking about who you want to travel with when you're trying to escape murder. If you're going to build around somebody and put a group together, put them around Umar ibn al-Khattab radiAllahu anhu. So Umar radiAllahu anhu came with a large group, 20 people.

**[9:34]** Got so excited. So he went to Umar radiAllahu ta'ala anhu and we said, where's the Prophet ﷺ? He's coming. Then he said, thumma atana ba'dahum Rasul Allah ﷺ wa Abu Bakr ma'ahu. And then the Prophet ﷺ and Abu Bakr arrived and he said, falam

**[9:54]** yaqdim alayna Rasul Allah ﷺ hatta qara'tu suwaran min al-mufassal. As I said that by the time the Prophet ﷺ arrived, we already memorized a significant portion of the Quran to recite to the messenger of Allah ﷺ.

**[10:11]** And so we went out to the Prophet ﷺ and here is a beautiful description that he gives as a kid. Qala wallahi ma ra'aytu ahla al-Madinati farihu bi shay'in qattu ka farihihim bi qudum Rasul Allah

**[10:27]** ﷺ. He said, I swear by Allah, I've never seen the people of Medina more happy about anything that ever happened to them than they were when the Prophet ﷺ arrived. They were so happy, the joy, the celebration. Like you know, we can capture it in like nasheeds and we can try to capture it in these reenactments.

**[10:45]** But imagine what it was like to actually be there. And he's saying, I've never seen anything like it. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to us and the people of Medina were so happy. So he's a 10 year old and he's extremely excited.

**[11:02]** Now I said there's only one narration from his father or about his father. It's actually not even from his father. It's about his father Aazib radiAllahu ta'ala anhu. It's in al-Bukhari and it's a long narration about the hijrah. So they saw the Prophet ﷺ, they saw Abu Bakr radiAllahu anhu.

**[11:20]** Everyone's trying to get their time. Everyone wants to get their moment with the Prophet ﷺ. And the Prophet ﷺ is trying to manage crowd control. With the youth that want to now allocate themselves to him, serve him, with the elders, with the

**[11:35]** chiefs. And he said that the Prophet ﷺ settled with his maternal uncles Banu Najjar. So you wanted to get to the Prophet ﷺ, you try to go around, try to penetrate through that. But it was very hard for him as a kid to try to figure it out. So he says, then Abu Bakr radiAllahu ta'ala anhu, so this is in al-Bukhari.

**[11:56]** He says, He said that Abu Bakr came to my father and he purchased a saddle from my father for 13

**[12:13]** dirhams. So this is now my first interaction with Abu Bakr, like a serious interaction with Abu Bakr radiAllahu ta'ala anhu. He saw my father was selling something, he purchased the saddle. So Abu Bakr radiAllahu ta'ala anhu purchased the saddle.

**[12:29]** And this subtext is in al-Bukhari. So he says, He said that Abu Bakr said to my father, He said, can you please have your son, al-Bara', carry the saddle and bring it to my place.

**[12:49]** So al-Bara' is like, okay, I'm going to be the one to carry the saddle to the place of Abu Bakr radiAllahu ta'ala anhu. But he said that my father answered Abu Bakr and he said to him, no, la hatta tuhadithana kayfa sana'ta heena kharaja Rasul Allah radiAllahu ta'ala anhu

**[13:07]** wa anta ma'ahu. He said, I won't tell him to take the saddle to you until you tell me what it was like when the Prophet radiAllahu ta'ala anhu came to you and told you, let's go out on this journey of the hijrah. Like, I want you to tell me what the hijrah was like.

**[13:22]** SubhanAllah, how these hadith came to us. So this long hadith that we get in Bukhari, Abu Bakr radiAllahu ta'ala anhu is going to explain all the small details of the hijrah. One piece is the single interaction where Abu Bakr meets this man in Medina, says, can you sell me the saddle for 13 dirhams?

**[13:39]** Yes. Can you have your son bring it to me? Yes. Oh, but hold on. Can you tell me what it was like when you went out with the Prophet ﷺ? SubhanAllah. So this is the subtext of the hadith that we are about to go through. So Abu Bakr radiAllahu ta'ala anhu, of course he's grateful and he is who he is radiAllahu

**[13:55]** ta'ala anhu. So he starts to share the journey and he says, we started our journey at the beginning of the night. So imagine yourself now in Medina with al-Bara' or being al-Bara' and listening to Abu Bakr tell the story. And he said, and we hastened for one day and one night until it was the time of dhuhr.

**[14:14]** Fadharabtu bi basari, hal ara dhillan na'wi ilayhi? I started to look around to see if there was a shade that we could find, some shade for the Prophet ﷺ. And he says, fa-idha ana bi sakhra.

**[14:30]** He said, suddenly I saw a rock. So I went to that rock and I found a way for us to have some shade for the Prophet ﷺ. He said that I went to the land under that stone. He said, fa-sawwaituhu li Rasul Allah ﷺ.

**[14:47]** So I basically evened the ground. Wa farashtu lahu farwa. And I spread a garment for the Prophet ﷺ to sleep on. And I said to the Prophet ﷺ. Go ahead and take a nap, ya Rasul Allah. Take a nap right here, ya Rasul Allah.

**[15:04]** So he said, so the Prophet ﷺ obliged. The Prophet ﷺ rested. So he said, I went out. Hal ara ahad? Could I go see if there was anything that I could seek some sort of milk from? So I went out looking for a shepherd. So I left the Prophet ﷺ in the shade. I went out looking for a shepherd.

**[15:21]** He says, fa-idha ana bi ra'i ghanam. And then I saw a shepherd. And I said to him, li man anta ya ghulam? I said, who do you belong to, oh young man? And he said, li rajulin min Quraysh? To a man from Quraysh. Fa sammahu fa araftuhu. So he named that man and I knew who he was.

**[15:40]** Fa qultu hal fi ghanamika min laban? I said to that man, do you have any milk that you can give to us? Qala naam. He said, yes. Qala qultu hal anta haribunni? Would you mind giving me some of that milk? He said, of course. So he said, so he brought the sheep and he started to milk the sheep.

**[15:59]** And he said, then I told him to brush the dust from it. And then I had a small vessel with me and I took that and he milked a little bit of that into the vessel. I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. And I told him, fa qultu ishrab ya Rasul Allah? I told the Prophet ﷺ, go ahead and drink from it, oh Messenger of Allah.

**[16:20]** Fa shariba ﷺ hatta radheet. He said, so the Prophet ﷺ drank until I was satisfied. The adab of Abu Bakr radiAllahu anhu, like I was thirsty, but the Prophet ﷺ was thirsty. I watched the Prophet ﷺ drink. He drank that milk.

**[16:35]** And then I was pleased when I saw the Prophet ﷺ was satisfied. Then I said, is it time to move on, ya Rasul Allah? So he said, yes. So we moved on. And he said, then no one found us except for Suraqa ibn Malik.

**[16:54]** And Suraqa ibn Malik was riding his horse and coming after us. I said, ya Rasul Allah, someone is coming after us. The Prophet ﷺ said, la tahzan inna Allaha ma'ana, don't be afraid, Allah is with us. And then when he got close to us, so close to us, that he was the length of a spear or two or three spears.

**[17:13]** I said, ya Rasul Allah, he caught up with us. And I started to cry. The Prophet ﷺ said, why are you crying? Qala wallahi ma'ana nafsi abki, walakin abki alayka, ya Rasul Allah. I said, I swear by Allah, I'm not crying for myself, O Messenger of Allah. I'm crying over you.

**[17:29]** So the Prophet ﷺ, he made du'a, O Allah, protect us from him in whatever way that you will. And then Suraqa's, the horse legs of Suraqa sunk into the ground and he fell off of it. And then he narrates the conversation.

**[17:45]** He said, Suraqa came and said, O Muhammad ﷺ, I know that this is because of your prayer. So pray to Allah to save me from my predicament. And by Allah, I shall go away from you. And I will also lead away from you all of those that are seeking you.

**[18:00]** So the Prophet ﷺ did so. And the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, afterwards, as he did so, Suraqa said, you're going to pass by some camels and some sheep of mine in such and such place.

**[18:17]** Take whatever you need from them. And the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, I have no need for any of them. So the Prophet ﷺ prayed for him. He was released and he went back to his companions. And then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ continued with me until we came to Medina, where the people met him.

**[18:37]** So Abu Bakr is not telling every detail of the hijrah, but he's giving him an overview that relates to him. And he says, when we got here, Abu Bakr is describing now the reception. When we got here, the people were on the road and they were on their rooftops. And even the servants and the children came to us and they started to crowd the Prophet ﷺ.

**[18:57]** As-subiyanu fit-tariqi yaqulun, Allahu Akbar, ja'a Rasul Allah ﷺ, ja'a Muhammad ﷺ. He said, the children started to come and they said, Allahu Akbar, the Messenger of Allah has arrived. Muhammad ﷺ has arrived.

**[19:14]** And so we were received and the people then started to say, where are you going to stay? Where are you going to stay? Where are you going to stay? And the Prophet ﷺ said, tonight I'll stay with Banu Najjar, the maternal uncles of Abdul Muttalib to honor them as such.

**[19:30]** So we stayed there and then the next morning, everything else unfolded. So we got this narration through this interaction. Al-Bara' narrated it from his father, this interaction between his father and Abu Bakr. So obviously you can imagine Aazib and al-Bara' sitting together, father and son, listening to Abu Bakr radiAllahu anhu tell this story.

**[19:50]** And they were so happy. And then al-Bara' radiAllahu ta'ala anhu, his father looked him and said, go ahead and take the saddle to the house of Abu Bakr. So in a separate narration, al-Bara' radiAllahu ta'ala anhu says, Fadakhaltu ma'a Abi Bakrin ala ahlihi.

**[20:06]** So I followed Abu Bakr radiAllahu ta'ala anhu and I entered into the house of Abu Bakr with his family. Fa-idha Aisha ibnatuhu muttaji'atun. And I saw Aisha radiAllahu ta'ala anha and she was laying down.

**[20:25]** Qad asabat ha humma, and she was struck by a fever. And then I saw Abu Bakr radiAllahu anhu go, so this is first introduction to Aisha radiAllahu anha, Umm al-Mu'mineen. He said, fa ra'aytu abaha fa qabbala khaddaha. So Abu Bakr went down to her and he kissed her on the cheek.

**[20:42]** Wa qala kayfa anti ya abunayya, how are you? Ya abunayyatuhu, how are you my dear daughter? So his first introduction to the sahaba is actually very beautiful. Because that's how he got introduced to Abu Bakr radiAllahu anhu, through this narration with his father in the saddle.

**[20:59]** And then in this narration in Bukhari as well, his introduction to Umm al-Mu'mineen Aisha radiAllahu anha, when she was still very young, was laying down with a fever as she got to Medina and was very sick. And seeing Abu Bakr radiAllahu ta'ala anhu kneeling down and kissing his daughter on the cheek and saying, how are you my dear daughter?

**[21:19]** That's the introduction to Mus'ab, to the excitement of the companions. Then to Rasul Allah ﷺ from afar. And then to Abu Bakr as-Siddiq radiAllahu ta'ala anhu from up close. And then to as-Siddiqah Aisha radiAllahu ta'ala anha from up close.

**[21:38]** Then he says, so this is now you move on. Young man that wants to know the Prophet ﷺ. Qala laqiyani Rasul Allah ﷺ fa-akhadha biyadi fasafahani. This is a really interesting narration.

**[21:54]** So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, he saw me and he put out his hand to shake my hand. So he shook my hand. Something really interesting that he says here. The Arab did not used to shake hands. Shaking hands was a foreign concept.

**[22:11]** Okay. So they were a little surprised. And you can actually read this in the sharh of many of the hadith where the Prophet ﷺ is emphasizing handshakes. Right. Men to men, women to women of course. All right. Shaking hands. And the Prophet ﷺ is emphasizing it.

**[22:26]** So al-Bara' is a young man. He wants to learn adab from the Prophet ﷺ. So he says the Prophet ﷺ saw me and he shook my hand. And I asked the Prophet ﷺ about that handshake. Like he wants to be a student from the very start. Like is this the adab, the way that Muslims are supposed to be with one another?

**[22:44]** And he said, Faqala ﷺ ma min muslimayni yaltaqiyani fayatasafahani fayahmadani Allaha wa yastaghfirani Allaha illa ghufira lahuma qabla an yaftariqa

**[23:02]** He said, ﷺ, that no two Muslims meet one another and then shake hands. And then praise Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala and seek forgiveness from Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala, except that they are forgiven before they part ways from each other. And there are multiple narrations about the sins falling when people shake hands with each other, the greeting of as-salam.

**[23:24]** So this is one of the narrations of as-salam and how we take it. So that's his introduction to the Prophet ﷺ. And then you start to see how he describes the physical being of the Prophet ﷺ.

**[23:41]** So this is one of the common hadiths in al-Bukhari and also in Shama'il obviously. That al-Bara' radiAllahu ta'ala was asked, Akana wajhu an-nabiyyi ﷺ mithla as-sayf? Was the face of the Prophet ﷺ as bright as a sword?

**[23:59]** You know a sword, like if you think of a fresh or a shiny sword, you think of brightness, right? So he's being asked, was the face of the Prophet ﷺ as bright as a sword? Qala la bal mithla al-qamar He said no, his face was as bright as the full moon ﷺ.

**[24:16]** It was even brighter than that, right? If you were to compare the sword to the moon in the desert at night, the full moon, he said the face of the Prophet ﷺ was as bright as the full moon. He says in another hadith, also authentic, by the way, I keep saying al-Bukhari because al-Bukhari has many narrations from al-Bara'.

**[24:35]** Sometimes even just singular from al-Bara' where he's the only narrator. He says kana nabiyyu ﷺ marbu'an. That the Prophet ﷺ was of a modest height, right? So the Prophet ﷺ was not too short, not too tall, but he leaned slightly tall, right?

**[24:52]** ﷺ. And he said, and he had hair that came down to his shoulder, ﷺ. Wa qad ra'aytuhu fi hullatin hamra' He said, and I saw the Prophet ﷺ once wearing a red hulla, like a red, you know, hulla would be like a suit, but obviously not a suit in the way that we think of a suit, right?

**[25:13]** But an overcoat or something that was very common to the people of Yemen. So the Prophet ﷺ was wearing a red hulla. Qala, wallahi ma ra'aytu shay'an ahsana minhu He said, I swear by Allah, I've never seen anything more beautiful or more handsome than the Prophet ﷺ that day.

**[25:29]** This was so uniquely, just awe-inspiring. So he's one of those people, and I'm only giving you a few of those narrations. It's one of those people who describes the Prophet ﷺ's physical appearance with depth and with awe.

**[25:46]** So he's clearly awe-inspired by the Prophet ﷺ. But remember, the shama'il are not just how the Prophet ﷺ looked, they're also how he behaved, alayhi salatu wasalam. And many of the books of shama'il, they focus on the introductory remarks of the Prophet ﷺ.

**[26:06]** Like what would the Prophet ﷺ say to a people when he first met them? That's part of his shama'il, not his ahadith, but like in the general sense, the things that he said ﷺ. But what were some of the things that he would say alayhi salatu wasalam when he first met you, or when he first addressed a gathering?

**[26:23]** So he gives us one of those narrations that kind of shows us how the Prophet ﷺ set up the society of al-Madinah. So he says, amarana Rasul Allah ﷺ bi sab'in. The Prophet ﷺ commanded us with seven things.

**[26:42]** And think about a cohesive society here. Pay attention. Qala awwalan bi'iyadati al-mareed, to visit the sick. How many Muslim societies maintain the visitation of the sick when they're not relatives?

**[26:58]** I'd argue it's probably the most lost communal sunnah that we have. Visiting sick people for the sake of visiting the sick, consoling. Not because they're family, not because they're friends, but visiting the sick. So he said the first thing, bi'iyadati al-mareed, to visit the sick.

**[27:16]** Then he said, wattiba'i al-jana'iz, to follow the funerals. Those that you know and those that you don't know. Right? So you visit them when they're unwell, you pray for them when they pass away. This is the right of your brother or your sister upon you. Wa tashmeet al-a'tis, to say tashmeet to someone who sneezes.

**[27:36]** What is that? It's yarhamukAllah. Right? So the Prophet ﷺ mentioned to us, and by the way, like, also something, it's not uncommon to be sitting with Muslims and someone sneezes and they don't say alhamdulillah and others don't say yarhamukAllah. The Prophet ﷺ established this as not just a sunnah, but obligatory.

**[27:54]** In fact, it's emphasized to a point of being mandatory that when someone sneezes, they should say alhamdulillah and the other should say yarhamukAllah. May Allah have mercy on you. So he said, he commanded us to say yarhamukAllah to the one who sneezes. Qala wa nusrat da'eef, and to support the one who is weak.

**[28:13]** Wa'awn al-madhlum, and to aid the one who is being oppressed. Nusrat da'eef, as the scholars mentioned, is referring to a more general sense. Someone could be weak financially, someone could be weak in their health, someone could be weak in terms of their position, but to support them when

**[28:31]** they're being wronged, oppressed, is specific. So it's a specific implication out of a broad implication. Wa'ifsha' as-salam, and to spread the salam. It's one of the first things the Prophet ﷺ brought to al-Madinah was the idea of spreading a salam.

**[28:48]** And the last one is wa'ibrar al-muqsim, to help a person fulfill their oath. Very interesting. Actually, al-Bara' has a few ahadith about this, where he sort of asked the Prophet ﷺ to explain. To help someone fulfill an oath, the Muslim is not supposed to take oaths

**[29:08]** slightly, but at the same time, if someone takes an oath, then society, out of goodness, should try to help that person fulfill their oath so that they don't disappoint the one that they owe, and they don't fall short in obligation to Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala.

**[29:24]** So that's also a ibadah in society. Let's help someone fulfill a promise. Let's help someone fulfill their oath, whatever it may be. And then he said that he forbade us to drink from silver utensils, to wear gold rings, to ride on silk saddles, or to wear silk clothes, or he forbade us

**[29:45]** from ad-dibaj, which is like a thick silk overcoat, and he mentions wa'l-qasiyy wa'l-istabraq, also two other types of silk. Right? So he forbade us from basically embellishing ourselves to a point of tahrim. ﷺ, to a point that it would be forbidden.

**[30:03]** So he gets, he captures the Prophet ﷺ's essence and aura when he enters Madinah. And then he gives us sort of how the Prophet ﷺ is setting up and structuring societies. Then we get to his now personal experiences with the Prophet ﷺ. Qala radiAllahu ta'ala anhu wa'an abi ghazawtu

**[30:22]** ma'a nabiyyi ﷺ khamsa ashara. He said, I fought 15 battles alongside the Prophet ﷺ. So I fought 15 battles with the Prophet ﷺ. In one narration he said he traveled 18 times with the Prophet ﷺ. So three journeys that were not battles or expeditions, and 15 that were

**[30:44]** battles. So he had a lot of time with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ during those battles. Now if you remember in the story of Zayd ibn al-Arqam, the narration of Urwa ibn Zubayr. Qala radda Rasul Allah ﷺ nafaran yawma

**[31:00]** Uhud istasghara hum. That the Prophet ﷺ turned some people away on the day of Uhud because he found them too young to fight. So he missed Badr because he was only a young man. He was still a kid. He wasn't able to fight in Badr. And he was amongst those that Urwa says the Prophet ﷺ turned away on the day of

**[31:17]** Uhud because he found them to be too young. Usama wa ibn Umar, wal bara wa Zayd ibn al-Arqam wa Zayd ibn Thabit. May Allah be pleased with them all. Waj'alahum harasan lith-dhurriya. The Prophet ﷺ instead made them to be guards for the women and for

**[31:35]** the children. So he's the last one in this category that we mentioned. Now it's very interesting. He mentions a particular affinity to Abdullah ibn Umar radiAllahu ta'ala anhuma. Wa jahl istasghartu ana wa ibn Umar that I and Abdullah ibn Umar were considered too

**[31:52]** young to be taking part. And he says kuntu ana wa ibn Umar lidda. He said I and ibn Umar were lidda. Lidda would mean that they were like the exact same age, contemporaries. So either likeness in terms of personality or likeness in terms of age and circumstance.

**[32:11]** So he says me and ibn Umar were kind of the same. Abdullah ibn Umar radiAllahu ta'ala anhuma were kind of the same in this regard. And we were not able to fight but we both had that desire to fight alongside the Prophet ﷺ. Now the reason why there are some scholars, even though he has his own narrations where he says he didn't

**[32:29]** fight, some scholars are like maybe he did. It's because he narrates with precision some of the details of Badr and Uhud. Which means that while he was not permitted to fight himself, he certainly asked a lot of questions and he recorded what he witnessed himself radiAllahu

**[32:47]** ta'ala anhum, not being in the battles himself. Okay? So for example, when it comes to Badr, he says that I asked the sahaba that fought on the day of Badr alongside the Prophet ﷺ how many they were exactly. So he said that they said to me, kanu iddatan

**[33:10]** ashabi Talut allatheena jazau ma'ahu an-nahar. He said that they said that they were exactly the number of the companions of Saul, the companions of Talut when he crossed the river of Jordan into Palestine as we find in the Quran. And they were exactly 300, or they

**[33:31]** were 310 men or so. Okay? 310 men or so. Bid'ata ashara wa thalatha mi'a. We know it's 313 recorded in other places but bid'a can mean any odd number added on to it. So 310 plus an odd number, we know through other narrations, 313. So he narrated that about the people

**[33:51]** of Badr and he says in another narration, again explaining that he and Ibn Umar tried to come forth on the day of Badr and they were not allowed. He says that the muhajireen were over 60 men and the ansar were over 249 men. Okay? So he narrates some of the details

**[34:12]** of Badr. He himself narrates on Uhud seeing the women running, seeing the people fleeing from the battlefield. He narrates seeing the chief of the archers, Abdullah ibn Jubayr, may Allah be pleased with him, standing on the top of the mountain of archers and calling

**[34:29]** to the companions not to go down, not to relinquish their places until the Prophet ﷺ had allowed and he narrates the exact number of the casualties, the exact number of the prisoners, and he

**[34:45]** narrates some of the very specific words of Abu Sufyan as well as the words of the Prophet So I'm giving you that context to tell you that he was very interested in what was happening in these battles, though he wasn't able to participate in these battles. Now when was

**[35:02]** he able to finally participate in battle? Al-Khandaq. And he said that the Prophet ﷺ gave him permission for the first time to take part in battle. What makes this so beautiful is that just as we have from al-Bara' sort of this description of the Prophet ﷺ entering

**[35:21]** into Medina and the awe-inspiring messenger of Allah ﷺ, so perfect, and when he was given the hulla ﷺ, the special red garment from Yemen, how he looked in that garment ﷺ and the brightness of his face is the same Bara' who narrates the narrations about

**[35:40]** the Prophet ﷺ as a warrior. And he's very specific. One of the reasons why the muhaddithin appreciated the hadith of al-Bara' is that he's very specific, narrates with precision.

**[35:56]** So he says, and this is so beautiful, Qala ra'aytu an-nabiyya ﷺ yawma al-khandaq wa huwa yanqulu at-turab I saw the Prophet ﷺ on the day of Khandaq and the Prophet ﷺ was drawing and he was carrying the dirt, meaning the Prophet ﷺ was digging out of the trench. And he said

**[36:15]** that until that dirt that he was removing from the trench came on his chest, it covered his entire body. So he says that the turab covered, sha'ara sadrihi, it covered his body

**[36:31]** ﷺ wa kana rajulan kathira ash-sha'r. He said that the Prophet ﷺ had hair, quite a bit of hair, and so that hair came on the Prophet ﷺ and I want you to imagine like the scene from al-Bara' and seeing the Prophet ﷺ in a different light as a leader. Every

**[36:51]** single part of the body of the Prophet ﷺ, and he says all of the whiteness on the stomach of the Prophet ﷺ or even under his armpits ﷺ, his entire body is covered in mud ﷺ. Like what a man ﷺ, what a leader, in the trenches just like everybody else and digging

**[37:13]** the portion of ten men himself ﷺ. So he said I saw him in this way, like he was taken aback by it. I'm used to seeing the Prophet ﷺ in a certain way and I'm seeing him in this way. So he says wa huwa yartajizu bi rajazi Abdullah

**[37:31]** He said he was singing, he was chanting ﷺ some of the lines of poetry of Abdullah ibn Rawaha. Pause, quick pause. Abdullah ibn Rawaha was like the father of Zayd ibn Arqam. He's the one who raised Zayd ibn Arqam who we spoke about. The poet of the Prophet ﷺ,

**[37:49]** the warrior poet who would be alongside the Prophet ﷺ and his lyrics had to do with war. Very eloquent. So he says that the Prophet ﷺ was singing, chanting some of the lines of Abdullah ibn Rawaha and the lines were as follows.

**[38:06]** Allahumma lawla anta ma ahtadayna wa la tasaddaqna wa la sallayna Oh Allah, had it not been for you, we would not have been guided. Nor would we have given in charity, nor would we have prayed. Fa-anzilan sakinatan alayna

**[38:22]** wa thabbit al-aqdama in laqayna And so, bestow upon us a sakinah, a tranquility from you and make our feet firm when we meet our enemies. And he continued ﷺ,

**[38:39]** Inna al-a'da'a qad baghaw alayna idha aradu fitnatan abayna And he said that verily the enemies who came to fight against us, transgressed against us, but we refused to flee from them, rather we will withstand them.

**[38:56]** Qala yarfa'u biha sawtuhu. The Prophet ﷺ started to raise his voice at the last line, like he's getting the companions to sing alongside him ﷺ. That's a different side of the Prophet ﷺ. Allahumma lawla anta ma ahtadayna wa la tasaddaqna wa la sallayna fa-anzilan sakinatan alayna

**[39:18]** wa thabbit al-aqdama in laqayna inna al-a'da'a qad baghaw alayna idha aradu fitnatan abayna So he's singing this ﷺ and the last line everyone's singing alongside him ﷺ. Like he's getting them pumped up ﷺ. He's getting them ready for the moment.

**[39:38]** And that's another side of the Prophet ﷺ, his morale boosting. And as he sees them ﷺ and you can imagine the sight, everyone digging away, and what are they facing? What are they facing? A genocide. You talk about subhanAllah relevance to Gaza, they're facing genocide.

**[39:56]** Like today I saw, subhanAllah, this was an early song. One of the early videos when the genocide first started was the journalists sitting together and they were singing the song,

**[40:12]** Sawfa nabqa huna kay yazula al-alam A very beautiful song that we will stay here and we will not leave this place until the pain goes away from us. That was early on. They're sitting around the fire.

**[40:27]** That's when Wael Dahduh was still in Gaza and Anas al-Sharif before he was martyred and you had Saleh and all these famous journalists and they're sitting around the fire. Probably a few months after and they're singing the song. Today, subhanAllah, two years into this, and I saw a video that came out today

**[40:45]** where they're standing and the tents are behind them and some of them are missing legs and they're still singing Sawfa nabqa huna And I'm like, ya Allah. Two years and they're still singing it. SubhanAllah, two years and they're still singing it.

**[41:00]** That we're not going to leave. So there's something to say about that morale boost. And the Prophet ﷺ and his companions were doing that. Right? And he said, and so the Prophet ﷺ, he went on digging himself ﷺ. So after he gets them to sing, chant these nasheeds, chant these lines of poetry while they're digging away

**[41:20]** and he boosts their morale, he said, I saw the Prophet ﷺ go on and continue to dig his part and he was saying, Lawla anta ma ahtadayna Oh Allah, if it wasn't for you, we would have never been guided. Oh Allah, if it wasn't for you, we would have never been guided.

**[41:36]** So while he got them height, ﷺ, with the last line, the first line stuck with him ﷺ, ya Allah, if it was not for you, we would not have been guided. And the most precious gift is hidayah. So al-Bara' said, I saw the Prophet ﷺ in the trench, digging away and saying,

**[41:53]** Lawla anta ma ahtadayna ma ahtadayna Alhamdulillahi alladhi hadana li hadha wa ma kunna li nahtadiya lawla an hadana Allah Right, all praises be to Allah who guided us to this and surely we would not have been guided had Allah ﷻ not guided us.

**[42:11]** So he narrates this from Khandaq. And then he narrates in Hudaybiyyah. He was one of those people who took the pledge, bay'at ar-Ridwan, the pledge with the Prophet ﷺ that Allah ﷻ was pleased with those people who took that pledge under the tree.

**[42:29]** But he narrates a very specific miracle from the Prophet ﷺ on that day. When they were at Hudaybiyyah and they were waiting for Uthman ﷺ to come back, before the rumors came that Quraysh had abducted and killed Uthman ﷺ,

**[42:45]** they were waiting for him to come back for the negotiations to tell them what happened. They waited for some time and the well went dry, or it was coming to its end. So he said, so I saw the Prophet ﷺ

**[43:02]** and he sat next to the well ﷺ and he did wudu with the water that was left in the well ﷺ and he took some water ﷺ from that small portion and then he said that the Prophet ﷺ gargled with that water.

**[43:21]** Okay? So madmada ﷺ, he gargled with that water and then the Prophet ﷺ spit back that water into the well. He said, Wallahi, the water surged from that well and we were taken care of for the rest of the trip to the point that it sufficed not just the people

**[43:39]** but it sufficed our animals as well. So he witnessed the Prophet ﷺ in that miracle. Courage, working with the people, not being afraid ﷺ, getting his hands dirty in the most prolific and physical sense

**[43:54]** and now the miracles that come to him in the midst of battle ﷺ and his next narration is also in a shada'a. So he narrates the shada'a, as they say, the difficult moments of the Prophet ﷺ in battle.

**[44:09]** Like he saw certain things from the Prophet ﷺ which is in Hunayn. So in Hunayn, which is the battle that came after Fath Makkah where the companions were ambushed and many people fled from the Prophet ﷺ

**[44:28]** and only a few people stayed around him ﷺ in the initial ambush. Al-Bara' is one of the very few people who did not leave the side of the Prophet ﷺ even in the initial moments. So basically they got ambushed by these Bedouin tribes,

**[44:44]** many of them fled and then they came back to the Prophet ﷺ when the Prophet ﷺ called back out to them to the battlefield. Al-Bara' is one of those who did not flee from the Prophet ﷺ on the day of al-Hunayn and we know this because in the...

**[44:59]** Hadith he's asked, Ya Abu Umar, are you amongst those that left the Prophet ﷺ's side? And al-Hunayn says, I swear by Allah that I did not. Right? So he's one of those people that stayed with the Prophet ﷺ. And he says, Wallahu alladhi la ilaha illahu ma walla Rasul Allah ﷺ

**[45:19]** He said, I swear by Allah that the Prophet ﷺ at some point, I mean at no point did the Prophet ﷺ ever turn his back to the battlefield. Like the Prophet ﷺ kept on marching forward. And he said that many of the people fled because we didn't have many weapons

**[45:37]** and the archers that were shooting at us were extremely accurate. So the archers were raining down on us and we didn't have weapons. And he said, so they went towards the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and the Prophet ﷺ was on a white mule with his cousin Abu Sufyan ibn al-Harith.

**[46:01]** Abu Sufyan ibn al-Harith, not Abu Sufyan ibn Harb. We covered this in a previous episode. Abu Sufyan ibn al-Harith radiAllahu anhu, his cousin, was holding the reins. And he said, and I saw the Prophet ﷺ and he was fighting so courageously. And he was saying, Ana nabiyyu la kadhib, ana ibn Abdul Muttalib

**[46:18]** And he said that I am the Prophet in truth and I am the descendant of Abdul Muttalib. And he said, this is so powerful. He says, wallahi, wa inna ash-shuja'a minna. He said that I swear by Allah that the one who was considered courageous amongst us

**[46:35]** was the one who could keep up with the Prophet ﷺ in the battle. Because he was plunging forward ﷺ. And he said that when the battle became fiercest, and the sun became unbearable, and the people

**[46:50]** became afraid, they started to hide behind the Prophet ﷺ as he was marching forward. And he says that the Prophet ﷺ, this is so powerful. He says that, and I swear by Allah that the Prophet ﷺ that day got down from his animal

**[47:07]** and he marched forth ﷺ, he marched forth on his feet ﷺ. And basically this inspired the companions to come back to the battlefield. Like, ya Allah, this is the leader. Usually the leader stays back, and the leader dispatches the forces and stays out of the battlefield.

**[47:23]** Right? That's usually the way that this traditionally goes. But like, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and you're talking about like, what a time, right? It's right after Fath Makkah, like we just had the pinnacle of victory. And our Prophet ﷺ is going forward.

**[47:39]** You think the people that in Uhud thought that the Prophet ﷺ was dead and, you know, would have, were ready to basically lose their lives, you think they're just going to let this happen? Like people fled back to the Prophet ﷺ and started to march behind him ﷺ, inspired by his bravery ﷺ.

**[47:56]** So he narrates those moments of courage from the Prophet ﷺ as well. He narrates afterwards that the Prophet ﷺ first sent Khalid ibn al-Walid radiAllahu ta'ala anhu to Yemen, yad'uhum ila al-Islam, to call them to Islam.

**[48:15]** Qala fa kuntu mimman kharaja ma'ahu. He said, I was amongst those that went with Khalid to give the people of Yemen their first introduction to Islam. Qala falabitha sittata ashhur falam yujibu. So Khalid stayed with them for six months and we called them to Islam and at that point

**[48:33]** they still had not answered the call. Qala faba'atha Rasul Allah ﷺ Ali ibn Abi Talib. The Prophet ﷺ sent Ali ibn Abi Talib radiAllahu ta'ala anhu, wa amarahu an yarudda Khalidan wa man ma'ahu. And he told Ali to basically let Khalid and those that were with him come back.

**[48:53]** And he said, fa in ahabba ahadun an yakhruj ma'ahu fal yu'udhan lahu. And basically you had a choice. If you wanted to come back with Khalid you could or you could stay with Ali now as Ali radiAllahu anhu continued the da'wah into Yemen. So he said, so I was amongst those that went out with Ali radiAllahu ta'ala anhu.

**[49:11]** Qala fa aslamat Hamdan fi yawmin wahid. So Hamdan, which was a large tribe of the people of Yemen, accepted Islam in a single day. Fa kataba bithalika ila an-nabiyyi ﷺ. So he wrote back with that to the Prophet ﷺ.

**[49:27]** Fa lamma qara kitabahu kharra sajidan. He said when the Prophet ﷺ read the letter from Ali radiAllahu ta'ala anhu about Hamdan embracing Islam, the Prophet ﷺ went into sajda out of gratefulness, sajda to shukr.

**[49:42]** And he said, as-salamu ala Hamdan, as-salamu ala Hamdan, as-salamu ala Hamdan. The Prophet ﷺ started to pray for Hamdan and pray for Hamdan and pray for Hamdan. And of course we know after that that the Prophet ﷺ sent Mu'adh ibn Jabal radiAllahu

**[49:58]** ta'ala anhu and Abu Musa to stay with the people of Yemen ﷺ. So he was a part of that in terms of the seerah. Now as far as the narrations are concerned, what are some of the narrations that he has that are also indicative of his closeness?

**[50:15]** Number one, he narrates a lot of the fadha'il of Madinah. He's an Ansari, so he narrates some of the fadha'il of al-Ansar, the virtues of al-Ansar and the virtues of Madinah. So the hadith of the Prophet ﷺ, man samma al-Madinata Yathrib fadi astaghfirullah, whoever calls Madinah Yathrib afterwards should seek forgiveness from Allah.

**[50:33]** It is Taybah, it's from the hypocrites that would continue to call it Yathrib, almost to undermine the Prophet ﷺ's authority in the city. So the hypocrites kept saying Yathrib to basically do inkar, to negate the Prophet ﷺ coming

**[50:49]** to Madinah and it becoming Madinat an-Nabiyy ﷺ. He narrates many of the narrations of fadha'il al-Ansar, the virtues of the Ansar themselves. Whoever loves them loves me and whoever hates them hates me ﷺ. It's a sign of iman to love them and it's a sign of hypocrisy to hate the Ansar of the

**[51:08]** Prophet ﷺ. And he narrates some of the mannerisms in travel. So when you do du'a as-safar, he's one of the foremost narrators of du'a as-safar and particularly when returning, he said the Prophet ﷺ when he would return from travel,

**[51:23]** he would add to du'a as-safar, a'ibun, ta'ibun, abidun, li rabbina hamidun ﷺ that he would say these words that we are returning in repentance and in worship and in praise to our Lord ﷻ.

**[51:40]** So this is one of his narrations. He also has a very particular narration that the Prophet ﷺ taught him when he goes to sleep. And you'll see the precision of al-Bara'. Sometimes you're like, is the du'a authentic? Is it real?

**[51:55]** Is it the way that it is? So listen to this and I hope some of you insha'Allah ta'ala went back and memorized the du'a from Zayd ibn Arqam. So this is the du'a of al-Bara', a very famous one that we have. He said that the Prophet ﷺ said to me, wa la'u'allimuka kalimatin taquluhaa idha awayta ila firashika fa in muttaa min laylatika

**[52:17]** muttaa ala al-fitra wa in asbahta asbahta wa qad asabta khayran The Prophet ﷺ said to him, shall I not teach you some words, if you die the night that you say these words, you die upon the fitra, meaning Islam. And if you wake up upon these words, then you already have a lot of khayr, a lot of

**[52:34]** good that comes to you. Or you have achieved and attained a lot of good. So I'm going to have you all repeat after me. Insha'Allah then you can go back, watch the recording and write it down or find it of course in any one of the famous books of sunnah. Allahumma inni aslamtu nafsi ilayk wa wajjahtu wajhi ilayk

**[53:00]** wa fawwadtu amri ilayk raghbatan warahbatan ilayk wa alja'tu dhahri ilayk la malja'a wala manja'a minka illa ilayk

**[53:21]** amantu bikitabika alladhi anzalta wa binabiyyika alladhi arsalta Okay, so the narration is, O Allah, verily I submit myself to you, and I turn my face

**[53:37]** to you, and I entrust my affairs to you, with hope in you and with fear in you, and I lay myself down depending upon you. There is no escape and no refuge from you except to you, I believe in your book which

**[53:53]** you have revealed, and I believe in your prophet whom you have sent. So someone says, well I can say something to the extent of it, right, and not really have it. So al-Bara' said that the Prophet ﷺ made me repeat it back to him. And when I repeated it back to the Prophet ﷺ, I said at the end of the hadith, wa bi

**[54:10]** rasulika alladhi arsalta. And in your messenger who you have sent. And he said, so the Prophet ﷺ put his hand on my chest and he said, wa binabiyyika alladhi arsalta. Say instead, and your prophet whom you have sent.

**[54:26]** What's the difference between rasul and nabi, Allahu'alam, in this context? But the point is that clearly these are things that were taught to the Prophet ﷺ, revealed to the Prophet ﷺ, with specific blessings that are attached to them. So the Prophet ﷺ wants you to say it precisely.

**[54:42]** So he said, say, wa binabiyyika, instead of saying, wa bi rasulika. So he narrates that bedtime sunnah, and I hope you all go back and memorize this du'a insha'Allah ta'ala. He also narrates the sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ, and he's narrated as being someone who

**[54:57]** would never miss the sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ, so he used to pray all of his sunnahs. And he gives us some of the adab of jama'ah as well, when we pray. So he narrates, qala kunna idha sallayna khalfa Rasul Allah ﷺ ahbabtu an akuna

**[55:13]** an yameeni. He said that when we used to come and pray with the Prophet ﷺ, I used to try to be, I loved to be on his right side. Which gives us a ruling that when the line is somewhat going in one direction, it should be centered as possible, but if it should be imbalanced, it should be imbalanced to

**[55:30]** the right. So he said we would try to be to the right of the Prophet ﷺ, and we would try to be amongst those that were in the first row. And he said that the Prophet ﷺ, after he would finish the salah, he said that he would

**[55:46]** immediately yuqbilu alayna bi wajhihi ﷺ, he would turn around and he would face us ﷺ with his back towards the Ka'bah as he made his adhkar ﷺ. So we take that sunnah from this hadith. We also take, he says that the Prophet ﷺ used to walk between us in the rows of salah.

**[56:07]** And he used to touch our chests and our shoulders. And the Prophet ﷺ would say, do not be out of line, otherwise Allah ﷻ will cause your hearts to be out of sync as well. So la takhtalifuu subhanAllah, because your hearts, your qulub will be out of place. So imagine, like here, the Prophet ﷺ walking between the rows of salah, getting people

**[56:26]** straight and think about it when you get into your ranks, that he was someone that would, you know, that narrates this of the Prophet ﷺ. He said that the Prophet ﷺ would tell people to complete the first rows and he said,

**[56:42]** inna Allaha wa mala'ikatahu yusalluna ala sufuf al-awwal, that Allah and the angels send their salawat on the people in the first rows. So he narrates this. And he was so close to the Prophet ﷺ in salah that some of his narrations are about what the Prophet ﷺ would recite in the quiet salah.

**[57:02]** So you have to be of a proximity to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to get what he would read in dhuhr or what he would read in asr ﷺ. So he narrates those ahadith. He narrates some of the hadiths about where the Prophet ﷺ's positioning was in salah,

**[57:19]** precision. All of the books about the sifat of salah of the Prophet ﷺ, the manners of prayer in any madhab will have multiple narrations from al-Bara'. So he told us exactly where the Prophet ﷺ would put his head when he would do sujud. He told us at what point the sahaba would move when the Prophet ﷺ said,

**[57:36]** sami'a Allahu li man hamida rabbana wa lakal hamd, said that we would not move from our ruku' to our sajda until the Prophet ﷺ's face touched the ground. So the patience of the companions in waiting for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to carry out the next dimension, the next element of the salah.

**[57:54]** He narrated some of the ahadith of the Prophet ﷺ's love for al-Hasan and al-Husayn. May Allah be pleased with them both and send his peace and blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ and his family. So he narrates seeing the Prophet ﷺ holding al-Hasan and al-Husayn and saying, oh Allah, I love them, so love them as well.

**[58:11]** He narrates multiple ahadith about fadha'il al-Qur'an, the virtues of the Qur'an. So he says that I remember there was a man who was reading [Surah al-Kahf 18] and his horse was tied with two ropes and a cloud overshadowed him and the horse started to shake.

**[58:29]** So he went and he said to the Prophet ﷺ what happened and the Prophet ﷺ said that was as-sakinah, the tranquility that came down with the Qur'an. Now with all that being said, his most famous ahadith, if you hear someone over the 300

**[58:48]** sheets of al-Bara', say hadith al-Bara', the hadith of al-Bara', then it's talking about a very particular hadith and that is the long hadith about the punishment and the reward of the grave. So if you watch the Barzakh series, the other side, every single episode had something from

**[59:06]** al-Bara' as hadith from the Prophet ﷺ because he described following the Prophet ﷺ in the janazah, he said, fa-ntahina ilal qabr fa-jalasa wajalasna ka-anna ala ru'usina at-tayr

**[59:22]** that we got to the grave and the Prophet ﷺ sat at the head of the grave or at the side of the grave and we sat as well and it was as if there were birds on our heads. So attentive to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and this is the hadith of the Prophet ﷺ

**[59:41]** meaning what happens when a person dies, what they see when they're dying, either the angels of reward or the angels of punishment. The Prophet ﷺ said, seek refuge in Allah from the punishment of the grave three times and then the Prophet ﷺ explained when the angels come in the grave and they say man

**[59:59]** rabbuk, man nabiyyuk, wa ma dinuk, who is your Lord, who is your Prophet and what is your religion? This is all from the hadith al-Bara' and then either the reward or the punishment opening, it comes from this narration of al-Bara' radiAllahu ta'ala anhu with the Prophet ﷺ all the way until the point where they meet their deeds and the caller calls out from the heavens

**[1:00:18]** either in good or in bad. This is all from his narration radiAllahu ta'ala anhu. Because of time I'll simply wrap up inshaAllah ta'ala in just three minutes. He would correct, he was a person who was very brave so obviously someone who witnessed

**[1:00:34]** his courage alongside the Prophet ﷺ. He's someone who also would correct the record and did not like that people would make excuses to miss out alongside the Prophet ﷺ. So he heard some people that were saying that the ayah, wa anfiquu fi sabilillahi wa la tulqu bi aydikum

**[1:00:53]** wa anfiquu fi sabilillahi wa la tulqu bi aydikum ila at-tahlukah Where Allah ﷻ says, spend in the way of Allah and do not throw yourselves into destruction. He heard some people that were saying this and making this an excuse to not give for the sake of Allah ﷻ. So al-Bara' radiAllahu ta'ala anhu stood up and he said,

**[1:01:08]** at-tahlukah Destruction here is spiritual destruction when you don't go forth in the path of Allah ﷻ. Not the physical destruction from spending like you're completely flipping this ayah to mean the opposite of what it actually means. And subhanAllah if he's correcting the record back then, imagine how easy it is for us to

**[1:01:28]** misuse and may Allah ﷻ protect us from doing so long after these companions of the Prophet ﷺ. As for his battles afterwards, he fought alongside Ali radiAllahu ta'ala anhu in the Battle of al-Jamal and the Battle of Siffin. He also fought in Nahrawan which was fighting the Khawarij, the people that the Prophet

**[1:01:47]** ﷺ called the dogs of hellfire and he gave glad tidings to those that would fight. So he's amongst those that fought alongside Ali radiAllahu ta'ala anhu in every battle. And then he fought in the famous battle of Tastur or Tustar, they're both accurate, which

**[1:02:05]** was the expeditions against the Persian Empire. And he was one of those that was a commander in the time of Umar ibn al-Khattab radiAllahu ta'ala anhu under Sayyidina Umar radiAllahu anhu and he particularly had a very active role in this battle of Tustar and subhanAllah there's something very powerful and profound

**[1:02:27]** about this battle that the sahaba had gotten to the end of the battle and the victory came right between Fajr and Dhuha, right between Fajr and the sunrise. And because of that they collectively prayed Fajr after sunrise.

**[1:02:45]** So they were in the midst of the Fath, like the moment of Fath came right after Fajr up until sunrise and because of that they prayed Fajr late that day. Alright, I'm going to share something that shows up in the Seerah of Bara' in this regard that subhanAllah puts all of us to shame and makes us think next time you miss Salat al-Fajr.

**[1:03:02]** Fajr. They would cry years later for missing Fajr that day. Not because, not because they went to sleep late, not because they were watching you know movies at night, not because they were hanging out, because they were in the middle of battle

**[1:03:21]** and in the midst of the Fath they made a judgement call that they were right at the point of victory and sunrise came in to the point that Anas radiAllahu ta'ala anhum kana yabki kullama dhakara fatha Tustar. He would cry every time he remembered the battle and he would say, wa maa Tustar laqad

**[1:03:38]** da'at minni salat as-subh. Why are you talking to me about Tustar? We missed Fajr that day. Think about that next time you think about delaying your Salat. Al-Imam Ibn Abd al-Barr says that he was the one who opened, al-Bara' was the one

**[1:03:53]** who opened a city called ar-Rayy which is around modern day Tehran in Iran in the Persian empire and Umar radiAllahu ta'ala anhu appointed him as a governor at some point and he was given the nickname Dhul-Ghurra.

**[1:04:09]** Dhul-Ghurra, and Ibn Hajar says it belonged to him but it may have belonged to someone else. Dhul-Ghurra means a person who has like a shiny, like a streak on their face, a radiance. Some of them said from the min kathrati as-sujud, from the amount of sajda that he does like

**[1:04:26]** he had a nur that came from his forehead radiAllahu anhu and some of them said the general radiance of his light. He lived radiAllahu anhu into his 80s. He taught people the sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ including his children

**[1:04:43]** and he would say, halummu wa allimukum wudu'a Rasul Allah ﷺ, come let me teach you the wudu' of the Prophet ﷺ. So he narrates as we said over 300 ahadith from the messenger of Allah ﷺ, some of the most critical, some of the most beautiful and insha'Allah ta'ala

**[1:05:02]** Dr. Abdel Razak, you're going to read [Surah at-Tin 95] to honor the hadith. He narrates, he said, sam'i'tu nabiyya ﷺ yaqra fi al-isha wa tini wa az-zaytun. He was reminiscing later on in life. He said, I remember the Prophet ﷺ led isha and he read wa tini

**[1:05:20]** wa az-zaytun, qala wa ma sam'i'tu ahadan ahsana sawtan minhu ﷺ, he said I swear by Allah I never heard anyone with a more beautiful voice than his ﷺ. ﷺ. So he narrated these hadiths with great love from the Prophet ﷺ

**[1:05:37]** and he said that salaytu ma'a Rasul Allah ﷺ al-atama, I prayed with the Prophet ﷺ, the dark prayer which is another name for isha and he would tell people and I remember the Prophet ﷺ read wa tini wa az-zaytun and he started to become emotional as he remembered the voice of the

**[1:05:54]** Prophet ﷺ even decades later. Multiple narrations about his life alongside Zayd ibn al-Arqam, so he lived in Kufa in Iraq, he taught the people in Kufa in Iraq, he lived until the time of Mus'ab ibn az-Zubayr in his governorship and he died at that time around 72 years after hijrah and I simply

**[1:06:16]** end with the last narration in this regard, Ibn al-Ala' ibn al-Musayyib, Qala laqeetu al-Bara' ibn Aazib radiAllahu ta'ala anhu, says I met al-Bara' radiAllahu anhu and I said, Tuba laka sahibta an-nabiyya ﷺ wa baya'tahu tahta ash-shajara, glad

**[1:06:34]** tidings to you, you got to accompany the Prophet ﷺ, you were a sahabi and you were amongst those that gave bay'ah, that gave the pledge under the tree of that day because he lived so long after the Prophet ﷺ so he's one of the rarest sahabi, so tuba laka, what an amazing life you had, so the big eyed tabi'een, the

**[1:06:50]** same way that he was one day from the big eyed sahabi meeting the Prophet ﷺ and Abu Bakr the first time and he started to cry and he said, Yabna akhi innaka la tadri ma ahdathna ba'dahu, oh son of my brother, oh my nephew, you do not know what we did after he passed away ﷺ, meaning it's not

**[1:07:08]** over yet, like we have to cling to righteousness and he clung to righteousness and az-zuhd radiAllahu ta'ala anhu until he passed away in Iraq, fa radiAllahu ta'ala anhu wa anas-sahabati ajma'een may Allah azawajal be pleased with them all, may Allah send his peace and blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ and his family and all of those that accompanied

**[1:07:26]** and may Allah azawajal allow us to accompany him ﷺ fi firdawsil a'la, barakAllahu feekum, wasalamu alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh
