**[0:00]** There is a discussion that exists in our tradition where the ulama, starting from the companions

**[0:22]** of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam would discuss what is al-arja aya bi-kitab Allah, the most hopeful verse in the book of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala. And the beauty of this type of a discussion is that it's not something that is set in stone to where

**[0:38]** it has to be one verse. Meaning different people will approach this question from a different vantage point. What gives you the most hope of the verses of the Qur'an? And so for example, Abdullah ibn Abbas (رضي الله عنه) had a very interesting verse that he found to be

**[0:57]** the most hopeful. He mentioned the verse of Ibrahim alayhi salam saying to Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala, Where Ibrahim alayhi salam says to Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala, my Lord who gives life and who

**[1:15]** gives death, show me how you give life to the dead. Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala says, do you not believe? And he says, indeed, but so that my heart can be further at ease. Ibn Abbas (رضي الله عنه) of course narrated that we have more rights than Ibrahim alayhi salam

**[1:34]** to turn to our Lord with this request. Ibrahim alayhi salam was not questioning Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala, but rather he was saying so that my faith can be increased upon the faith that I already have. And so Ibn Abbas being a scholar who found that his inquiry would always

**[1:50]** increase his iman, found this to be a hopeful verse in the Quran. Most of the scholars, they said that arja aya bi kitab Allah, the most hopeful verse in the book of Allah is what? Does anybody know? When you think of a hopeful verse, what verse comes to mind?

**[2:11]** Ayatul Kursi, Surat Az-Zumar. Ayatul Kursi is the greatest verse. But the verse that most of the sahaba and most of the scholars mention is the verse in Surat Az-Zumar. Qul ya ibadiyya alladhina asrafu ala anfusihim la taqnatu min rahmatillah inna Allaha

**[2:32]** yaghfiru dhunuba jami'a innahu huwa al-ghafur ar-rahim. Say, O my servants who have transgressed against themselves, do not despair from the mercy of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Indeed, Allah is all forgiving and all merciful. And they call

**[2:51]** this the most hopeful verse in the Quran because Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala is pinning his mercy to him subhanahu wa ta'ala and not making it conditional upon your condition. Meaning

**[3:07]** Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala says that he forgives all sins because he is ghafur rahim. He is the forgiving one. He is the merciful one. Meaning if we were to depend on ourselves and our own restitution and rectification, then we would not sufficiently be able to

**[3:25]** dig ourselves out of the holes that we bury ourselves in. We would not sufficiently be able to restore ourselves to our original being. Our sins would inevitably weigh us down. But Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala says he is the one who

**[3:43]** forgives all sins because he is ghafur rahim. And this is similar to how we will spend the last 10 nights of Ramadan should Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala give us life. May Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala, Allahumma ballighna Ramadan. May Allah azawajal allow us to meet Ramadan and

**[3:59]** be forgiven. And we ask Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala to allow us to witness Laylatul Qadr. When we will be saying in the last 10 nights, Allahumma innaka afuwwun karim wa tuhibbu al-afwa fa'afu anni. Or Allahumma innaka afuwwun tuhibbu al-afwa fa'afu anni. Oh Allah, you

**[4:16]** are al-afuww. I start from that place that you are the one who loves to pardon. You are the one who loves to forgive. So forgive me. I'm not saying, Oh Allah, I fasted 20 days. So forgive me. Oh Allah, I'm going to be praying the next 10 nights. So forgive me. I am pinning

**[4:32]** my forgiveness on his names and attributes of being forgiving and being pardoning. And this is a beautiful way to start the relationship with Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala because if you really think about it, man saama Ramadan imanan wahtisaban ghufira lahu ma taqaddama

**[4:49]** min dhanbihi. The very famous hadith that whoever fasts Ramadan with faith and accountability seeking its reward, Allah will forgive him for all of his sins. The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said, man qaama laylatul qadr imanan wahtisaban. And whoever stands

**[5:05]** up on the night of laylatul qadr imanan wahtisaban. With faith and seeking the reward, Allah will forgive him for all of his sins. From a logical perspective, you tell me who you know in your life that would say just work one month out of the year and I'll forgive you for the 11

**[5:21]** months prior. In fact, just give me one good night and I will give you the reward of a lifetime. I'll pay you an entire salary for a lifetime. It doesn't exist. That type of mercy and forgiveness is incomprehensible to man and it's important for us to not speak

**[5:37]** about the mercy of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala in the capacity of limited notions of human mercy. Divine mercy is different. And so this is the most hopeful ayah in the Quran to many of the scholars. And I want to start from this place, bi'idhnillahi ta'ala, as we build

**[5:55]** into what other scholars consider to be the most hopeful verses in the Quran. The idea that Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala can restore you to a baseline. You see, when you start Ramadan and you set your expectations for yourself, the very first expectation is to

**[6:14]** be brought back to a baseline, to be brought back to a bare minimum. And that minimum is to be forgiven. That if there's anything that I want to attain this Ramadan, first and foremost, it's that Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala forgive me for the sins that I have accumulated. That

**[6:31]** before I talk about the good things that I will earn and before I talk about the habits, I start from this place, Allahumma ghfir li. Oh Allah forgive me for all of my sins. And I trust in Allah's ability to forgive despite my insistence upon sins that I said I would

**[6:51]** quit last year. Yet I fell back into them once again. It's a baseline and it's an incredible baseline for Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala to get you to that. And it's not so hard to attain that level. As we know from the hadith in which Jibreel alayhi salam comes to the Prophet

**[7:09]** sallallahu alayhi wasallam. He has failed, he has lost. May he be humiliated and disgraced. The one who comes into contact with Ramadan and he's not forgiven. Like you have to do

**[7:30]** things to miss out on the baseline of forgiveness of this month. It's an incredible month of mercy from Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala. May Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala not make us of the deprived. Allahumma ameen. May Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala forgive us. And subhanAllah, there was a person

**[7:49]** who came to the worshipper, Rabia al-Adawiyya rahimahullah. And he asked her, would Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala forgive me despite all of the sins that I've committed in the past? And she said something very profound. She said, Allah calls you to him when you turn away from him.

**[8:09]** Do you really think Allah would not accept you when you turn towards him? Think about the logic there. Allah calls the sinners back to him no matter how far they have gone. So who are we to think that Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala would not accept the one who's then trying to draw near to

**[8:27]** him? And Allah's mercy is indeed incredible. Allah's forgiveness is indeed incredible and all encompassing. May Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala grant it to us all. Allahumma ameen. But there are other scholars who said no, there are other ayat that are even more hopeful than this one. Some of them

**[8:49]** said it is inna al-hasanati yudh-hibna as-sayyi'at. That verily the good deeds do away with the sins. So you not only come back to a baseline, but you actually have yourself increased at the very

**[9:06]** beginning. Today there was a sister who embraced Islam. May Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala bless her after Salatul Jumu'ah and keep her steadfast. Allahumma ameen. And I don't know if she's with us tonight, but her story was incredibly beautiful. She talked about being raised in the United States

**[9:23]** and then coming here and making these promises with Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala and just the thought that by the way, when you embrace Islam, not only are you forgiven for that which came before, but you actually get a head start because the good that you have done will now be preserved for you.

**[9:40]** Couldn't believe it, subhanAllah. And really, like you think about the narrations of the companions who came to the Prophet sallallahu alaihi wasallam. They had to know that Allah forgave a person who killed 99 people, and then went and asked if he could be forgiven and then killed that person who

**[9:58]** said no and killed 100. Why? Because there were people that came to the Prophet sallallahu alaihi wasallam, like Amr bin Al-As, who was afraid when he's taking his bay'ah to the Prophet, so he said, wait a minute, ya Rasulullah, will I be forgiven for all that I did? Because some

**[10:15]** of them didn't just kill 100 people, some of them killed 10s of sahaba. Abu Sufyan killed over 100 companions cumulatively, if you take his body of work before becoming Muslim, think about how that ayah resonated or that hadith resonated with them. So some of the scholars said, no, it's

**[10:34]** inna al-hasanati yudh-hibna as-sayyi'at. And some of the scholars said, there's something even greater than that. Where Allah subhanAllah says, yubaddilullahu sayyi'atihim hasanat. They are the ones who Allah takes their sins and

**[10:51]** turns them into good deeds. So not only are your sins forgiven, not only do your good deeds remain after tawbah and your sins get left behind, but your sins actually get turned into good deeds when you seek forgiveness

**[11:09]** from Allah subhanAllah. And there's an immediate realization of that. And then there is a habitual realization of that, which is that sometimes your sinful habits, the sinful qualities that you have, can actually turn out to be your

**[11:26]** best qualities if you convert them into means of pleasing Allah subhanAllah. Sometimes the same things that used to take you away from Allah subhanAllah, now become the things that bring you to Allah subhanAllah. And there's one last ayah that I'll share to open this discussion. And then we'll get into this discussion about how to

**[11:47]** transform yourself in Ramadan. But there are some who said that the most hopeful ayah in the Quran to them is

**[12:02]** i'lamu anna Allaha yuhyi al-arda ba'da mawtiha. Know that Allah gives life to dead earth. Know that Allah produces out of barren lands. Why? This ayah is in Surat Al-Hadid and of course, part of it also Surat Ar-Rum, where Allah says

**[12:35]** Allah subhanAllah calls the sinner back and says, isn't it time for those who believe to soften their hearts to the remembrance of Allah subhanAllah and the truth that he has revealed and do not be like the people of the book who came before you, who time

**[12:53]** passed from the initial point of reception, and their hearts became hard, and many of them became wicked and evil doers. Know that Allah can give life to dead earth. What is Allah talking about? Is he talking about land? Or is he talking about the hearts?

**[13:17]** That even a dead heart can be resuscitated and brought back to Allah subhanAllah. I want to use this as the beginning of a discussion of how to really transform yourself in Ramadan, not just to attain forgiveness, we ask Allah for forgiveness, but to use Ramadan truly as a month of transformation to formulate a new version of you.

**[13:42]** And I'll tell you why. Many times when we talk about the new version of us, we fail to look into our various old versions. What do I mean by that?

**[13:58]** If you're thinking about how you can have the best Ramadan, the first place that you should start from is to think about the best Ramadan you've ever had in your life. Think back in all of your years. What's the best Ramadan that you ever had? Except for of course, our brothers and sisters who just embraced Islam.

**[14:14]** What's the best Ramadan that you ever had? That Ramadan exposed a potential. Now many people say, I don't know how to do this. I don't know how to do that. I can't quit this habit. I can't quit that habit. It's like the smoker who says they can't quit smoking.

**[14:31]** But then Ramadan comes along and they fast from smoking, hopefully, they fast from smoking from the morning to the evening. Allah just showed you, you can abstain from your cigarette. You don't need to smoke your two packs a day. You know how to do this. Allah exposed your potential. Someone says, I don't know how to read this much Quran. You have a Ramadan in your memory.

**[14:55]** You have a time that you can look back on, you can say that was the best Ramadan of my life. I read this much Quran that Ramadan. I don't know how to cry. You cried that Ramadan. I don't know how to worship long into the night beyond the tarawih prayer. You had at last 10 nights where you pushed yourself beyond what you thought you were capable of. Your previous Ramadan exposed so far, what you know of your potential in Ramadan.

**[15:21]** So when you think about the type of Ramadan that you want to have, establish a baseline. The first baseline I want you to have is right now. I want you to think back to the best Ramadan you ever had. If there's a Ramadan in your life. That you say, you know what, that was the one. If there's a last 10 nights in your life where you say, you know what, that was the one. Start from that place. There's your baseline.

**[15:44]** But of course, we're not just talking about having a great Ramadan, we're talking about having a great life. We're not just talking about having a transformative Ramadan for Ramadan, we're talking about having a transformative Ramadan for our entire lives. And so here's your baseline potential that you know so far.

**[16:04]** If you're looking to create a new version of you, look back at all of the old versions of you. And there are three ways to do that. That we learn from the companions of the Prophet ﷺ.

**[16:19]** Number one, there's looking back at an older version of you that didn't have all of the accumulation of blessings that you have right now. When you used to be of more humble means, when you had less, when you were in perhaps financial desperation that you're not in right now. And if you're in that right now, may Allah see you through it.

**[16:43]** Or you didn't have a title next to your name, or you were a kid, you came from a humble place. And you can look back and you can remember that place. And that allows you to think of all of the blessings that you've accumulated. Because being grateful for the blessings of Allah is of the greatest ways in which you draw close to him.

**[17:03]** And so for example, when Umar ibn al-Khattab (رضي الله عنه) wanted to humble himself, what would he do? He'd put his head down, and he would cry. And he would say, I remember when I was Umayyad. They call me Amir al-Mu'mineen, Umar ibn al-Khattab, the commander of the believers, Umar ibn al-Khattab.

**[17:19]** I remember when I was Umayyad, little Umar, walking through the streets of Mecca. And I used to raise the sheep of al-Khattab. And that's all I was, to put himself down. Don't think you're more than that, Umar. Remember who you actually were.

**[17:35]** Remember that Allah brought you to this place, because sometimes there's a direct correlation, ironically, between the accumulation of blessings and the corruption of character. What do I mean by that? You know, you got a little money in your pocket.

**[17:51]** And now bad service at a restaurant, you immediately puff your chest out and start to push people around. Your patience has waned because you're now a more respectable person. MashaAllah, you grew, Allah gave you some titles, Allah gave you a degree, Allah gave you some position.

**[18:10]** And now, when someone dares to offend you, do you know who I am? So the blessings that were supposed to make you humble and put you into sujood in terms of your worship and humble you in terms of your character, somehow caused you to puff your chest out.

**[18:27]** It's counterintuitive. So remembering an old version of yourself means going back to the most humble version of yourself to be grateful to Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala. And you know what's the most humble version of yourself?

**[18:45]** Remember when you were not even remembered? Remember when no one even knew who you were? In fact, you didn't even exist?

**[19:04]** Remember then you became a drop of fluid. So remembering an old version of yourself is a direct way of humbling yourself so that you don't allow the accumulation of blessings that Ramadan is supposed to make you more aware of a source of arrogance.

**[19:20]** But instead, you let them be a source of humility. Go back to those old versions of yourself. Remember who you were. Remember what you were. Then there's a second version. The second version is remembering a sin that you committed in the past or a sinful past that you had.

**[19:40]** And that sinful past becomes such a horrifying image of what you know that you can descend into that you never want to go back to it again. Today I mentioned in the khutba the three signs of iman.

**[19:59]** The Prophet ﷺ mentioned that a person loves Allah and His Messenger more than anyone else. The second one that you love someone only for Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala. And so the people that you love, you love and you hate only for Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala and for nothing else.

**[20:17]** And the third one is that you would hate to return back to your days of ignorance the way that a person would hate to be thrown into a fire. Meaning what? When you catch yourself slipping, you put up a version of yourself that was the worst version of yourself.

**[20:33]** And you say, a'udhu billah. I seek refuge in Allah from being like this, from going back to that, from being that person again. This too was Umar bin Khattab (رضي الله عنه). He would remember the darkness of his jahiliyyah.

**[20:53]** And that was a direct reason for the light in his heart. His grandson Umar bin Abdul Aziz (رحمه الله), when the people would come to him and they would praise him for his adl, for his justice. He would remember one man that he felt like he wronged.

**[21:11]** And his name was Khubaib. And he would put his head down and cry and say, wayhaka ya Umar. All you people tell me, ya Umar, you did this in the whole world, but I remember when I wronged a man named Khubaib.

**[21:29]** So sometimes, going back to an old version of yourself that's not pleasant, and putting that image up and saying, I never want to be that person again. So that when you start to smell like that old person, you go, uh oh, a'udhu billah.

**[21:45]** I'm not going to be that person again. So when the Prophet ﷺ used to use that language, invoke that language, even on a community basis, don't go back to being kuffar, disbelievers, striking the necks of one another with swords.

**[22:00]** That invoked a particular ugliness. You remember who you were? Remember who you were? So that you never want to be that person again. So again, the first way to look at an old version of yourself is to look at the humble means from which you came.

**[22:17]** The second way is to look at a version of yourself that you never want to be again, and to use that as an image. To say, may Allah protect me from that, so if you start to smell like that again, you would hate to go back to being that person, like a person would hate to be thrown into a fire.

**[22:34]** And the third one is to actually go back to the times when you felt like you were a better version of yourself. Your best manifestations, for the sahaba of the Prophet ﷺ, they used to look at their time with the Prophet ﷺ.

**[22:54]** And so you look at a person like Abu Bakr as-Siddiq (رضي الله عنه), when a delegation from Yemen comes and he's the khalifa, and they ask for the Quran to be recited to them, and when the Quran is recited to them, they started to cry.

**[23:11]** And he looks at them and he says, هَكَذَا كُنَّا I remember one day when we were like that. I remember when we used to cry when the Quran was read. ثُمَّ قَسَتِ الْقُلُوبُ But then the hearts became hard.

**[23:27]** I remember those days. Abu Bakr (رضي الله عنه) was the man who used to cry so much in his prayer that there was a fear that when the Prophet ﷺ appointed him to lead the salah, that because of his soft heart and his frequent tears that his voice would not travel.

**[23:44]** And Abu Bakr looks at people that remind him of his old self and he goes, هَكَذَا كُنَّا I remember when we were like that. I remember when I used to be that person. Wallahi today the sister that took shahada,

**[24:00]** the amount of tears that she shed when she was about to say, أَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ She said, I always believed in God and one God and I was a Christian. But now I have to bring in Muhammad ﷺ.

**[24:16]** She wept and I thought to myself, I wish I could have that. So jealous for the sahaba. هَكَذَا كُنَّا I remember when we used to be like that. I remember that version of myself.

**[24:32]** I remember when I cried reading the Quran. I remember a time when I felt closer to Allah ﷻ. عَمْرُو بِنْ الْعَاصِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ At the time of his death when he famously said to his son, I divide my life into three.

**[24:47]** There's the time of my life when I was rejecting the Prophet ﷺ and I was fighting him and if I would have died at that time, I know I would have been from the people of the fire. And then there was a time when I believed in the Prophet ﷺ

**[25:02]** and I was with the Prophet ﷺ and I was in the front lines of the Prophet ﷺ alongside him ﷺ. And I know that if I would have died at that time, I would have been from the people of Jannah. But then there's this third phase where I just don't know.

**[25:19]** It's not the same anymore. I oscillate between states and I'm not so sure which way I'm going to go. The companions have the ability to reflect on the better versions of themselves and you set that for yourself as a baseline.

**[25:37]** So I ask you to look back at your life and to think of the times that you were closest to Allah ﷻ and you were the best version of yourself. And by the way, it doesn't have to be entirely, it could be partially as well.

**[25:54]** اعْلَمُوا أَنَّ اللَّهَ يُحْيِي الْأَرْضَ بَعْدَ مَوْتِهَا Know that Allah ﷻ gives life to dead land, to barren land. That doesn't have to mean that you were always good at ten things and now you're bad at those ten things. That could mean that perhaps now you excel in one way,

**[26:10]** but you really fall short in regards to something else. But you remember a time when you were better. And you say, هَكَذَا كُنْتُ I used to be that way before my heart became hard.

**[26:26]** And you know what, dear brothers and sisters, listen carefully. Sometimes, you need to reclaim certain dead parts of your character. You know, as we get older, they say when you get older, what happens? You lose patience.

**[26:42]** You get crankier. You don't put up with things anymore. I used to be like this. I used to be like that. And part of it is true. You know, I got older and instead of getting wiser, I got more reckless. But I call that recklessness wisdom. I flip out easier.

**[26:57]** I'm angrier. I'm harsher. That's not what this journey of life was to cause you to accumulate. It was supposed to make you a better version of yourself. And if you're thinking, well, what do I do? I'm so far removed

**[27:12]** from those better versions of myself. اَعْلَمُوا أَنَّ اللَّهَ يُحْيِي الْأَرْضَ بَعْدَ مَوْتِهَا Sometimes, you need to revive dead parts of your character. Parts of yourself that need to be reclaimed. That maybe you buried but Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala

**[27:28]** has not buried. Maybe you thought cannot be brought back but Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala can bring them back. Because Allah is the one who gives life to dead earth. And so whether your heart is entirely dead or there are elements of your character that you have buried

**[27:43]** and you put in the past and said, maybe back in the day I used to be like that. You know how much it hurts? When you meet someone later on in life and says, yeah, I remember when I was a student I used to be so active with my student association.

**[27:58]** I used to be this person with the messages. I used to be that. Why does it have to be a story of the past? Why can't that be the conclusion of your story? Bring it back to a baseline. And so before you talk about crafting a new version of yourself

**[28:14]** go back to the old versions of yourself and analyze them deeply in three ways once again. Who you were in terms of the blessings that you didn't have that you now have the worst versions

**[28:29]** of yourself so that you never slip back into that and the best versions of yourself so that you can set that as a baseline for where you know that you can get back to bi'idhnillahi ta'ala and more. Now here's the thing.

**[28:45]** What also makes Umar bin Khattab radhiAllahu ta'ala anhu so special in this regard is that Umar bin Khattab radhiAllahu ta'ala anhu could look at his old self and he could feel that sense of gratitude for where Allah

**[29:00]** brought him to. He could look at his old jahili self and he could feel a sense of gratitude that he wasn't that person anymore and he could hold that up to himself to say I never want to be that person again and he could look at his time with the Prophet

**[29:15]** sallAllahu alaihi wasallam and he could set that as a baseline for himself. But you know what? This man could look at everybody else in the ummah and say yeah I've got a leg up on them except for one man Abu Bakr al-Siddiq

**[29:30]** radhiAllahu ta'ala anhu and Umar radhiAllahu ta'ala anhu was constantly looking at Abu Bakr radhiAllahu ta'ala anhu as a better potential version of him than the place that he had already reached

**[29:45]** that was so praiseworthy in the sight of the Prophet sallAllahu alaihi wasallam. So we need to have examples to look to especially in the past as potential better versions of ourselves. One of the reasons why I teach

**[30:00]** the biography of the companions of the Prophet sallAllahu alaihi wasallam is because you'll realize their personalities were so different but they managed to crystallize those personalities into the best versions of themselves. And so when you say Sirata allatheena an'amta alayhim

**[30:15]** put me on the path of those that you are pleased with that means the lives of the Prophets that means the companions that means those people who maxed out with your personalities and reached versions of themselves find your better version

**[30:30]** in their stories and say I can get there. Not because I deserve it not because I have the mechanics to change but because Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala has given the mercy and the forgiveness to those who are

**[30:45]** not pleased with the stories and the mercy and the forgiveness and the pardon to get me there. Wa la'ika yubaddilullahu sayyi'atihim hasanat Allah azawajal changes their sins to good deeds i'lamu anna allaha yuhyi al-arda

**[31:01]** ba'da mawtiha Now when we come into Ramadan and we come into what the days of Ramadan offered to us the potential to reshape you know subhanallah I want you to think about what the components of yourself are

**[31:16]** what does your day look like outside of Ramadan or inside of Ramadan you wake up first and foremost you have to have the health in order to do something secondly

**[31:31]** you have what you have to put your health towards if you are capable of doing whether that's in an office building or as a homemaker if Allah azawajal has given you health then you have to take that health and you have to make something

**[31:46]** with that health you have to pursue something with that health in the case of a person who's employed or working you pursue wealth but whatever it is your health you wake up alhamdulillah I'm healthy now I need to do

**[32:01]** something with that health you have the component of time how much time do you have in that day to accomplish things you have the component of company who are the people around me that are going

**[32:16]** to influence me push me in one direction or the other and then lastly you have your inputs all of your inputs whether that's your social media or your messages

**[32:31]** or your conversations think about it like your soul's algorithm you have the things that you're putting into yourself the things that you're consuming physically and spiritually so again these are the components

**[32:46]** that make up your day and there's a logic to this when it comes to the hadith of the prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam when the prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam says hold on to five before five or when the prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam says

**[33:01]** ni'matan there are two blessings that people don't take advantage of as-sihha wal faragh health and time free time or when the prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam mentions that you will be asked for four things your life

**[33:16]** how you made use of those years your body how you consumed it your knowledge what you benefited with it your wealth how you earned it and how you spent it these are the components

**[33:31]** of a human being and what Ramadan gives you an opportunity to do is to actually transform all five of those components of your life all five of those components of the human being

**[33:46]** think about you wake up and you start with suhoor and your health is more focused on your spiritual health but at the same time Allah Subhanahu wa ta'ala is giving you something to think about in terms of the blessings that he's given to you in terms of

**[34:01]** your physical sustenance your physical body so you're going to be able to transform your life and you're going to be able to transform your life so your physical health

**[34:16]** is not harmed but your spiritual health is being increased so you have your health your pursuits Ramadan gives you this time span in which you're thinking throughout the day not just how to earn your dollars

**[34:31]** not just how to earn your wealth for the day but how to earn your afterlife income as well so when you're reading Quran what is one tasbih worth in Ramadan

**[34:46]** one subhanallah worth in Ramadan my adhkar throughout the day you're thinking about this as well your time becomes naturally attuned to a prophetic schedule subhanallah it's a it's a funny thing you know

**[35:01]** there's a prayer clock where you have the times of prayer most people throughout the year they have an approximate time of fajr an approximate time of maghrib but you ask someone in Ramadan what time is fajr 4:58

**[35:19]** what time is maghrib 5:36 you know it to the dot your time becomes attuned to a prophetic schedule you naturally start to pay attention and you start to allocate that time

**[35:34]** towards what the Prophet ﷺ gave to you and then you have your company and you know what's beautiful is that your social environments naturally are transformed in Ramadan

**[35:49]** there's something about coming to a place in a masjid and praying taraweeh there's something about the people around you being on the same page your company naturally shifts and I don't think that we often

**[36:04]** take that into consideration when we talk about why did I lose this after Ramadan why did I lose the reward of praying jama'ah in the masjid congregation in the masjid it's the fact that you were in the masjid surrounded by believers

**[36:19]** constantly who were doing the same thing as you and your fifth thing is your inputs what are your inputs because they say you're a summary of your closest five friends and you're a

**[36:34]** summary of all of the inputs everything that you feed yourself The one who eats and is grateful is like the one who fasts and is patient.

**[40:04]** When the Prophet ﷺ teaches us that we should have suhoor, that there's barakah in suhoor, blessing in suhoor, and that the angels send their prayers upon those who eat suhoor. It's an ibadah. You've turned eating into an ibadah, just as you've turned fasting into an ibadah.

**[40:23]** And your iftar is an ibadah, just as you're abstaining with an ibadah. You're learning to take your daily tasks and turn them into an ibadah. There's something deeply profound about that. Innama al-a'malu bin-niyyat. Actions are but by intentions.

**[40:39]** The secret of ihsan in our daily lives is to turn the insignificant and the mundane into the spiritual and the purposeful. Take these daily tasks and make them forms of ibadah.

**[40:57]** And Ramadan gives you an opportunity to transform those daily tasks. And the last thing that I will mention to you, dear brothers and sisters, in this regard, as far as how you transform yourself, what does the Ramadan makeover look like for you? You're going to be reading the Quran in Ramadan, possibly more so than any other time of the year.

**[41:18]** And I want you to read the Quran with an eye on the ayat that talk about character. If you were to take the first 10 verses of Surah Al-Mu'minoon, Qad aflaha al-mu'minoon.

**[41:36]** The first 10 verses of Surah Al-Mu'minoon. And you were to take the 10 verses of Ibadur-Rahman at the end of Surah Al-Furqan and the servants of the most merciful. And you were to take the verses of Luqman Al-Hakeem speaking to his son.

**[41:53]** And you were to take the verses of Surah Al-Ma'arij, fa waylun lil-musalleen. And then the section that follows on the second page of Surah Al-Ma'arij. And you were to take Surah Al-Hujurat. I gave you five sections to look at.

**[42:10]** And of course there are many more sections. Surah An-Nur which talks about modesty, ghadd al-basar and different things, right? But these verses, the first 10 of Surah Al-Mu'minoon, the last 10 of Surah Al-Furqan, the verses of Luqman Al-Hakeem talking to his son,

**[42:25]** the second page of Surah Al-Ma'arij, and Surah Al-Hujurat. Surah Al-Adab. The verse of mannerisms. And weigh yourself against those descriptions.

**[42:40]** SubhanAllah, the amount of tadabbur that could be done. The amount of contemplation that could be done by looking at those things and saying, where do I measure up to these things? Where do I measure up to these verses? I'm going to share with you something, subhanAllah, that I find beautiful about Islam.

**[42:58]** When you study other religions, one of the things that you'll appreciate about Islam is that Ramadan does not introduce anything that's out of the ordinary for the believer. What does that mean? Like most religions, when you study their festivals, when you study their holidays,

**[43:15]** they do things in those holidays that they only do in those holidays. What is Ramadan? Ramadan is an increase of the things that you already know how to do for the promise of a greater reward. You read more Quran. You pray more.

**[43:30]** You fast more. You give more charity. But there is nothing that you do in Ramadan that you only do in Ramadan. That's why, by the way, subhanAllah, one of the wisdom that the scholars mentioned, that Ramadan is only mentioned once in the Quran. Ever thought about that?

**[43:46]** SubhanAllah, it's so central to the believer and it's only mentioned once in the Quran. Because everything that Allah calls you through in the Quran is merely intensified in Ramadan. That's in regards to our ibadah, but also in regards to our character.

**[44:02]** So I want to leave you with this thought. When Allah says, وَعِبَادُ الرَّحْمَنِ اللَّهُمَّ اجْعَلْنَا مِنْهُمْ اللَّهُمَّ آمِينَ And the servants of the Most Merciful. الَّذِينَ يَمْشُونَ عَلَى الْأَرْضِ هَوْنًا وَإِذَا خَاطَبَهُمُ الْجَاهِلُونَ قَالُوا سَلَامًا

**[44:21]** Those who tread the earth lightly. And when the ignorant accost them, they say, سلام Isn't this exactly what the Prophet ﷺ said? That when one of you is fasting,

**[44:36]** and someone annoys you or aggravates you, فَلْيَقُلْ إِنِّي صَائِمٌ I'm fasting, I'm fasting. Isn't that just the Ramadan manifestation of قَالُوا سَلَامًا إِنِّي صَائِمٌ

**[44:51]** I'm not going to fight you. I'm not going to fight you. When you're driving, by the way, إِنِّي صَائِمٌ The other driver doesn't have to hear you say it. But the other driver can see the opposite of them. So,

**[45:06]** يَمْشُونَ عَلَى الْأَرْضِ هَوْنًا You should also drive on the earth lightly. Don't get into it with people.

And those who take to their chambers in prostration and in qiyam, in standing. SubhanAllah, if you look at almost all the hadith

**[45:42]** where the Prophet ﷺ talks about character during the day of Ramadan, it's distinguished by your ability to maintain your composure, your patience. So, whoever does not give up, qawl az-zur, false speech, idle speech,

**[45:58]** al-fuhsh, foul language, who responds to the ignorant with ignorance, responds to aggravations with greater aggravations. It's not a person who's truly in a state of siyam. Siyam is to hold yourself back.

**[46:15]** You hold yourself back from food and drink and intimacy, you hold yourself back when you deal with the people as well. And that's the first way that the day of Ramadan is distinguished. The night of Ramadan is distinguished by

**[46:30]** sujudan wa qiyama. It's distinguished by people that are in their qiyam. And this is the description of ibad ar-rahman throughout the year. How do they develop the reservoir of patience to deal with Allah's creation?

**[46:47]** They take to a beautiful relationship with Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala in the night that fills them up. And so they come out in the day nashiteen tayyib an-nafs, good spirits, with energy and iman.

**[47:03]** They come out having already generated something from their homes. wal-ladheena yabeetoona li rabbihim sujjadan wa qiyama. Ramadan is an exercise of what your life could look like with qiyam al-layl. All taraweeh is qiyam al-layl, by the way.

**[47:20]** Ramadan is an exercise of qiyam. And then what happens? What's the next verse? I know there are huffadh here. wa ibadu ar-rahman allatheena yamshoona ala al-ardi hawna wa itha khatabahum al-jahiloona qalu salama

**[47:37]** wal-ladheena yabeetoona li rabbihim sujjadan wa qiyama wal-ladheena yaqooloona rabbana asrif anna adhaba jahannama inna adhabaha kana gharama innaha sa'at mustaqarran wa muqama.

**[47:52]** That a person begs Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala to remove me from the punishment of the fire because its punishment is indeed horrendous. What a horrible dwelling

**[48:07]** and a horrible way to spend your afterlife. And what is it that you're going to be saying in the last 10 nights of Ramadan as you're pushing yourself in qiyam? Allahumma innaka afuwwun tuhibbu al-afwa fa'fu anni Allahumma innaka afuwwun tuhibbu al-afwa fa'fu anni

**[48:24]** The best thing that you're asking Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala for in the last 10 nights is forgiveness, is his mercy. And so if you're coming to your qiyam and you've got this long list, ya Allah give me this, ya Allah give me that, ya Allah give me this, ya Allah give me that,

**[48:40]** ya Allah give me this, ya Allah give me that, ya Allah give me this, ya Allah give me that, ya Allah give me this, ya Allah give me that, ya Allah give me this, ya Allah give me that, ya Allah give me this, ya Allah give me that, ya Allah give me this, ya Allah give me that, ya Allah give me this, ya Allah give me that, ya Allah give me this, ya Allah give me that,

**[48:56]** And as we learn from our messenger, sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, Allah has utaqa, people that he frees from the hellfire every single night. There are some people that will be freed from the hellfire, written from the freed from the hellfire, on the first night of Ramadan, some on the 20th of Ramadan, some on the 25th of Ramadan.

**[49:12]** Every night Allah has a group of people that he spares, that he writes down from the utaqa. What's the next verse in Ibadur Rahman? Those who when they spent, they don't spend extravagantly.

**[49:35]** So they don't do israf, they don't hold back. But they spend at a moderate pace. Ramadan is the month of sadaqah. And it's not a month in which you destroy yourself with your charity, but it's a month in which your wealth is put into such perspective that

**[49:53]** it really doesn't mean as much as I thought it did. I find more joy parting from my wealth than I find attaining it, because my priorities have changed. And so my whole conception of earning has changed. What do I really want to earn?

**[50:10]** Ramadan is a transformation of priorities. And so dear brothers and sisters, we enter into this month of Ramadan, and we think about transformation. Again, I want you to establish a baseline for yourself.

**[50:25]** Think about the best Ramadan that you ever had before. And say, I at least want to get there. Then think about the best version of yourself that you were before. And say, I at least want to get there. Then read the Quran with the lens of character.

**[50:42]** And say, I'm going to hold myself accountable to these verses. Then transform the daily components of your life by connecting them to the goals of your afterlife. Then have hope in Allah Subhanahu wa ta'ala.

**[51:01]** That Allah truly gives life to dead, barren land. And so Allah Azawajal gives life to al-qulub al-qasiyah, to hard, dead hearts. May Allah Subhanahu wa ta'ala soften our hearts with the Quran. May Allah Subhanahu wa ta'ala allow us to be written amongst those who are forgiven in Ramadan.

**[51:19]** May Allah Subhanahu wa ta'ala transform us in Ramadan. May Allah Subhanahu wa ta'ala allow us to have the best Ramadan of our lives. And may Allah Subhanahu wa ta'ala bring out of us through this Ramadan the best version of ourselves. And may Allah Subhanahu wa ta'ala allow us to salvage the gains from this Ramadan so that they extend beyond Ramadan.

**[51:38]** And may Allah Subhanahu wa ta'ala make our faith and our character pleasing to Him. And may Allah Subhanahu wa ta'ala allow this month to be a month of victory for our brothers and sisters in Palestine, for our brothers and sisters in the Sudan, for our brothers and sisters in every part of the world. Allahumma ameen.
