# Quenching Our Humanity | Khutbah

**[0:00]** ...the taqwa of Allah, to be conscious and dutiful and consistent with Him, subhanahu wa ta'ala. And welcome, my brothers and sisters, to the house of Allah Azza wa Jal. My brothers and sisters, we would never be able to know the greatness of our Prophet

**[0:17]** salallahu alayhi wasalam had he not lived the most difficult conditions that he in fact lived through, alayhi salatu wasalam. And we would not be able to know the reality of what it means to fulfill your potential

**[0:34]** as a human being. The reality and the pinnacle, the apex of human excellence, had our Prophet salallahu alayhi wasalam not been sent to us as a human being and been surrounded with a generation

**[0:49]** of sincere and loyal followers that were also not angels, human beings, that powered through all of the obstacles and the challenges to show us a human can become this splendid, this impressive, this amazing, by Allah's permission, and so you too can become that.

**[1:12]** And to illustrate this with just one, or perhaps two if time permits, deep dives into a moment, a night in the life of the Prophet salallahu alayhi wasalam and his companions and the

**[1:28]** difficult conditions they went through, we find in Sahih al-Bukhari and elsewhere in Sunnat Tirmidhi that Abu Huraira radhiallahu anhu, may Allah be pleased with him, it's confirmed about him that he used to swear and say, I swear by Allah, other than whom

**[1:45]** no one is worthy of worship, I used to get so hungry at times that I would have to stick my liver onto the ground. He would say my body would feel like it's on fire and so the coolness of the earth would be able to just lessen it a little bit, make it a little bit more bearable.

**[2:03]** He said and I would tie stones onto my belly from nothing but starvation and I would throw myself in the middle of the road. In some narrations he would say some people would think I'm crazy and it's nothing but

**[2:20]** the starvation I was going through. And I would find Abu Bakr as-Siddiq radhiallahu anhu passing by and he would have, you know, difficulty begging, difficulty asking. He says so I would ask him instead about an ayah from the book of Allah.

**[2:37]** Can you tell me what this ayah means? Can you tell me more about this ayah? Do you hear the messenger salallahu alayhi wasalam speak about this ayah? Elaborate it further. He says and I had no interest in starting that conversation other than, meaning more

**[2:54]** than him taking me off with him and saying come let's talk about it and feeding me. He said and I would find Umar on the road and I would ask him, I'd initiate a conversation about an ayah. Asking nothing more from Umar than to notice what I'm going through and to feed me.

**[3:12]** Until one time the Prophet salallahu alayhi wasalam passed by me and he said O Abu Huraira and I said Labbayka Ya Rasulallah, at your service O Messenger of Allah. Qala ilhaq bina. He said come with me, come along.

**[3:28]** He says the messenger salallahu alayhi wasalam apparently noticed. He noticed what was in my face, the pain of starvation and he knew what I was feeling. And so he took me along with him until we got to one of his houses.

**[3:45]** And then he entered and he sought permission for me to enter. Because no dignified man is going to let another man just walk into his home until his women are out of sight or properly covered or otherwise. He sought permission for me and I was permitted to enter so I entered.

**[4:04]** When I got inside I found qadhan min laban. I basically found a jug or a bowl of milk that some of his neighbors from the Ansar would gift him sometimes. And so he was overjoyed. He was just extremely happy.

**[4:20]** I'm going to eat finally. It's been days. I'm going to drink. And then he said to me O Abu Huraira. I said, Labbayk Ya Rasool Allah, tell me what's next? Qala idhab ila ahlus-suffa. Go to the people, ahlus-suffa, those living in the masjid.

**[4:37]** Fad'uhum ilayya and invite them to me so we can give them some of this milk. He says in ahlus-suffa, kanu adhyaafu al-islam, they were the guests of Islam. They had no money. They had no property. They had nothing at all.

**[4:54]** He says, but I said to my, I was bothered by this. He's very honest. May Allah be pleased with him. He said, I was bothered by this. And I said, what can ahlus-suffa possibly do with a small jug like this? There's way too little milk here for ahlus-suffa.

**[5:12]** Their numbers would increase and decrease, fluctuate day by day. But let's say they were roughly 80 people. As some numbers report, he says, I was more deserving of this sip of milk, ataqawwa biha so that I can find some strength in it.

**[5:27]** I was going, I'm going to faint from exhaustion. And then he said to me, go get ahlus-suffa. So I went and I got ahlus-suffa. And I was bringing them into the house saying, there is no way I'm going to be able to have

**[5:44]** any share of this milk because I am the messenger of Allah's server now and the server gets served last. And so there's no way around it. He said, and each of them would enter. I would have to hand him the jug of milk himself. He has to hand it over and he would drink until he's satisfied and hand it back to me.

**[6:06]** And then I would have to hand it again, killing the wound over and over, hand it again to another person. He says, wamaAAasa an yabqa lee minhu shayt. And I had zero hope at this point that anything would remain for me. It's impossible.

**[6:22]** He says, wa lam yakun min taAAati allahi wa taAAati rasoolihi sallallahu alayhi wasallam abuddun. But there is absolutely no way around obeying Allah and obeying his messenger sallallahu alayhi wasallam. So I continued to give them and continue to give them until every last one of them drank.

**[6:42]** This was one of the miraculous supports Allah gave to the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam, another sign of his prophethood. He says, and then they finished, they left and I placed the milk back into the two hands of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam.

**[6:59]** And so he looked up at me and he smiled. He knows what I'm thinking. He smiles and he says, ya abba huraira, oh abbu huraira, I said labbayka ya rasoolallah, at your service ya rasoolallah, what's next? So he says to him, ma baqiya illa ana wa an.

**[7:15]** There's no one left but you and me. Ishrab, drink. He says, so I drank until I was satisfied. He said to me when I gave it back to him, ishrab, drink again. So I drank until I could it and gave it back to him.

**[7:31]** He said, ishrab, drink again until I found myself saying, ya rasoolallah, oh messenger of Allah, ma ajidu lahu maslakan. I can't find any room left for it. There's no room. Qala fa arini, and so show it to me or quench me with it.

**[7:47]** It's my turn to drink. Notice he salallahu alayhi wa alihi wasallam did not drink yet. He said, allow me to drink then. He says, and so I handed him the milk and hamidallah, he praised Allah and thanked him,

**[8:06]** wasamma and he mentioned his name. He said, bismillah, wa sharibal fadlah, and he drank whatever was remaining from that milk, from that container. Aqoolu qawli hadha wa astaghfirullah alAAazim ma li walakum.

**[8:22]** Alhamdulillahi wahda wa salatu wassalamu ala man la nabiyya ba'da ashhadu an la ilaha illallah wahdahu la sharika lah wa ashhadu anna muhammadan abduhu wa nabiyyuhu wa rasooluhu. Of course, an incident like this speaks for itself.

**[8:42]** But I want to ask before I step down, why do you think the Prophet salallahu alayhi wasallam praised Allah? Said alhamdulillah. I want you to probe this question inside of yourself.

**[8:57]** Did he praise Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala for his bounty, like for the milk in and of itself, the ni'mah of the milk? That is very possible. You know Aisha radiallahu anha, when they asked her what was the situation, the lifestyle,

**[9:12]** the livelihood of the Messenger salallahu alayhi wasallam like, she said among many things, she said that one moon over another moon over another moon, three full moons would happen, meaning three months would pass, and no fire would be lit in the house of the Messenger

**[9:29]** of Allah salallahu alayhi wasallam, meaning no cooking, meaning no meat. Right? And when they said to her, then how would you possibly survive? She said, ala al-aswadayn, the two staple foods, the things that are always available, water and dates.

**[9:45]** She said, unless some of his neighbors from the Ansar gifted to him some milk, meaning the milk itself was rare. At times, even the milk, there was interruptions in it. And so the fact that he has milk in front of him alayhi salatu wasalam is certainly

**[10:04]** one of the reasons he's praising Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala. Or maybe he was praising Allah azza wa jal because Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala granted him the opportunity to remember that other people are just as, maybe even more thirsty

**[10:22]** and hungry at him. The opportunity, let me say, to remind us what it means to be alive. He taught us alayhi salatu wasalam what it means to be a human being, human excellence, human greatness, to live for things greater than yourself, to move beyond yourself, your

**[10:38]** needs, right? Your money, your family, your problems, to live for Allah and then to live for his creation, to live with itha, right? Selflessly, not just selfish, not just self-centered. Maybe he was praising Allah for the opportunity to catch that.

**[10:57]** That is certainly another reason he could be praising Allah. Maybe he was praising Allah for having guided him to be hungry himself. You see, I always, you know, reflect on the fact that people say our Prophet salallahu

**[11:12]** alayhi wasalam was the orphan that adopted the world. It's a beautiful phrase and it is, it certainly has some truth to it. But he did not choose to be an orphan. Allah chose for him to be an orphan alayhi salatu wasalam.

**[11:27]** He had him birth, live, born that way and so that of course amplified by design. Allah guided him to this, to have exceptional care for the orphans and the needy and the downtrodden. But when it came to hunger and thirst, he chose this even after Allah enriched him in

**[11:46]** the end of his life. Of the benefits of that is to never lose sight, never lose the taste, never lose the experience of what others are feeling. We can talk about those in need day and night, but unless we feel it ourselves, it's very different.

**[12:02]** The Prophet salallahu alayhi wasalam would not do away with his hunger and thirst until the poor and the needy, he tried his level best to make sure they had their hunger and their thirst satisfied. Or maybe Allah praised him, he was praising Allah for his humility that Allah guided him

**[12:20]** to. You know, think about this also, this is God's greatest messenger sitting there with the poor people, giving them priority over himself, drinking from the same cup or pot or utensil as the poorest members of society alayhi salatu wasalam.

**[12:38]** Or perhaps he was praising Allah for guiding him to be a believer, a believer that has good hopes of Allah without which selflessness, this ithar we're talking about would not be possible because many people can feel for those in need, but they are not able to figure

**[12:57]** out how to reconcile between their needs and my needs. And so they hold on to what they have too much out of fear that it's going to run out. And so they don't care about, they don't extend care to those they have care for in their hearts, but not the Prophet salallahu alayhi wasalam, not those guided to the reality of

**[13:16]** faith, reality of iman. He knew that Allah would bless the milk. He knew that Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala would make it enough. He had this husn adhan of Allah that Allah would bless that which is little so long as he does not act like it's all up to me to ration out my resources, to provide for myself

**[13:36]** and those I love. And no matter what we say up here in a khutbah, we can never fully come across the depths from which the Prophet salallahu alayhi wasalam says alhamdulillah. These are three, four, five thoughts of why he said it from the depths of his heart alhamdulillah

**[13:54]** before he said Bismillah and actually drank. But know that when he said his alhamdulillah, it was unlike any other human being. And it is at the top of the mountain that we are all trying to climb up. May Allah make a selfless like our Prophet salallahu alayhi wasalam and the sahaba.

**[14:09]** May Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala make us of those that assume the best of him in our problems and in our finances and in everything we face in life. And may Allah azza wa jal guide us to experience the brokenness of the downtrodden in a positive way that would drive us to live productive lives, altruistic lives, beneficial lives

**[14:30]** to ourselves and those around us. May Allah send his finest peace and blessings upon his greatest prophets and messengers, the master of all of the creation on the day of judgment and allow us to see his face and drink from his hand and benefit from his intercession on the day of judgment, his shafa'a.

**[14:46]** Allahumma ameen. May we be of those most overjoyed to receive it. Wa salallahu wasallamu baraka anabiyyina Muhammad. Allahumma ighfir lana warhamna. Ighfir lana warhamna ya Rabbana. Ighfir lana dhunubana kullaha. Allahumma ighfir lana dhunubana. Wa aslih dhata baynina.

**[15:01]** Wahdina subul al salam. Najjina min al dhulumati ila al nur. Qina al fitna ma zahra minha wa ma batan. Qina shuhha anfusina ya kareem. Wa salallahu wasallamu baraka anabiyyina Muhammad wa ala alihi wa sahbihi ajma'een.
